Matthew Hussey here with Love Life. I have a question for you. When you think about going
after the things you want most in life, how do you feel? Excited? Inspired? Capable of doing
anything you put your mind to? Or do you feel overwhelmed? Discouraged? Like you're facing an
insurmountable obstacle? If your answer is overwhelmed, you're not alone. Most people
feel the same way. And the reason is this.
Most people think that in order to achieve their biggest goals,
they have to take big monumental actions.
And that makes them give up before they even begin.
But the truth is, the key to achieving our goals is consistency.
Small actions done regularly.
Consistency can make all the difference between achieving your dreams
and staying stuck and unfulfilled where you are. So let's set you up for success. I'll do my part by
showing up every few days with a new episode filled with advice to help you live your best life.

And I know that if you're listening to this, then you're interested in making this a really incredible year. So I'm going to do something a little unorthodox here. I'm not
going to come out with the traditional new year, new you type advice. I want to actually help you
reverse some of the standard things that people talk about in the new year, because I really
believe that the way people talk about advice in the new year is not helpful.
When they give you certain things to do, all it leads to is you not following through on all of the things you've decided on. So let's make sure that this new year you actually stick to some of
the things you create. And I want to make this really relevant to your love life right now,
because I know that as you go into this year, you want to make this the year that either you
create that relationship with someone you're already with that's extraordinary, or you find someone extraordinary, or that person that right
now isn't paying you any attention, you're able to actually go and get that person. I want you to
know how to do that in the new year, but I want to save you from a crucial mistake right now.
One of the biggest things that people do wrong in the new year is they think, because it's a new
year, I now have to justify myself. I now have to go through all of these big changes because guess
what? It's 2014. Got to do big things, got to prove to everyone that I'm going to make it all
happen this year. And they treat it like there are 52 weeks in a year. They act like they have
to get it all done in week one. So they start making all of these crazy resolutions. They take on 20
new things that they have to do. And of course, we all know what happens. By January 5th, January 10th,
January 15th, they've already gone back on their resolutions. In fact, studies show that by the
15th of January, 90% of people will have already broken their resolutions. Isn't that amazing?
Here's my advice to you. Your life is
changed by 1% shifts. It's not changed by doing enormous things all in one go. So right now,
you may be looking at your love life with a degree of overwhelm, thinking, you know, I've got, I know
if I want to feel confident, I have to lose all this weight. I have to start going out more. I
have to start getting this new circle of friends. You might be freaking out in that way. All that does is lead to overwhelm. And the problem is as soon as you
get overwhelmed, your brain short circuits and you don't do anything. Here's what I want you to do.
I want you to pick the 1% shift in your love life that has the potential to make the biggest
difference if you stick to it every day. Your life is changed more by the one routine you stick to than the 10 new things you take on. If you're honest and the 1% shift is, I never talk to guys.
I always see men that I'm attracted to and I never walk over there. If that's your 1% shift,
then that's the thing you've got to start doing. And don't say to yourself now this year, oh,
okay, fine. New year's resolution, I'm going to talk to 10 new guys a day. Because you know, you're not going to do it. If you're not doing any of it now, you know, you're not
going to go for 10 guys a day to begin with. So start by saying, okay, here's my challenge.
I am going to say hello to one guy in line. Every time I'm in line at Starbucks, I'm going to turn
to the person next to me and say, Hey, how's it going? That's it. And I have to do it every time
I'm in Starbucks. Every time I'm lined up, every time I'm in that coffee shop, every time I'm in
that bookshop in line, wherever you are in line, you have to say hi to the person next to you.
That's a 1% shift that will give you a dramatic change in your love life. And it's very different
from saying, I need to find a man this year. So when I go up to a guy, I have to get his number
and I have to go on a date and I have to make something happen because Lord knows I don't have all that much time left. That's a really stupid way to go
about the new year. Go for a 1% shift that's going to make all the difference. Don't do what every
other person out there is doing right now, which is getting ready to make a ton of resolutions
they know they'll never stick to. And guess what? In 12 months time, they're going to make the exact
same resolutions again. Don't be one of those people. Be someone that this time next year has another problem.
And it's a quality problem because it's arisen from the successes and the progress of this year.
