Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey Cassie, how are you? Good. I'm nice and cozy and it looks like you're cozy too today. What are you wearing? Oh my gosh. Yes. I am wearing the My Muse sweat set that they sent over. We are so thrilled that we are, I don't know if we're like on their PR list or what, or they just wanted to send this to us one off, but I'm loving it. I love a good set and I love that we're matching right now. Oh my gosh. I know it. They're so fun. And the design is, is great. Uh, they've sent us stuff before, but I feel like they've really ramped up their like design branding schemes and I'm, I'm loving it, which we're also sipping on my muse, which is great. So what flavor do you have, Erica? I have the orange you glad flavor and it's really, really good. I,
Starting point is 00:00:51 it kind of reminds me of like a mimosa or something, but like without the alcohol and it's a adaptogen focused soda. It's, you know, one of those like healthier sodas out there on the market and it's, it's actually pretty good. What flavor do you have? Yeah, I have passion, which is actually a collaboration they did with Dixie D'Amelio, the TikToker. And we talk about, I feel like kind of the influencer collaborations that brands are doing with creating their own product lines all the time. So this is kind of cool to be able to experience one of those firsthand. So shout out to them for doing a collab with Dixie. I think it's great. I love that so much. I think that's so clever and I'm excited
Starting point is 00:01:37 to see more brands do similar things this year and beyond. Yes. Cassie, well, what have we been up to? I wanted to hear a little bit from you before we dive into today's episode about career growth. What have you been up to personally, professionally, and then we'll talk a little bit about the event that we were just at. Yeah. So personally, I mean, not much, honestly, just hanging out with my dogs over here at home. But yeah, professionally, we recently attended Possible, which is awesome. We had the founder of the conference on the podcast a few weeks ago to just kind of chat about the conference as a whole benefits for professionals attending conferences. But it was great. did you have a highlight session that uh you attended erica yes i have
Starting point is 00:02:28 like a few i was trying to work through i wanted to do a little like possible recap thing so um i was just looking at this earlier today of like my takeaways from it all it was it was kind of overwhelming because there was so much and like so many amazing sessions that I even missed some of the ones that I wanted to go to, like the one with Pitbull. And I was like, Oh, this is awful. Like, I can't believe I missed it. But I really loved hearing from Gary V, which was really fun. Because while I don't keep up with him too much these days, he was like one of the major role models that I had when I first got into marketing. And I know he was that for you too. And so hearing him and being there
Starting point is 00:03:11 live was really cool for us. And then I also loved hearing from the CMOs of EOS products and chime. Their session was really, really cool. It was kind of about like disrupting the ad, um, you know, landscape these days because, um, things can get kind of stale and they both had really creative approaches to their ads, um, that they recently put out. So it was cool to see like some of the behind the scenes there. And then another really cool one that I loved was when we saw Anne, the CEO of Glamnetic. She was just talking about like her experience as a creator and, you know, the brands that she's worked with, what she kind of looks for when working with brands. And so it was kind of cool to see that.
Starting point is 00:04:00 And then they wrapped up the conference with two fireside chats that we really loved. They were from Ashanti and Janelle Monae. And both of those celebrities are just so incredible in their own right. And so hearing from them live was so cool. And just like how they think about working with brands. And Ashanti actually revealed that she was pregnant live on stage oh my gosh so she's pregnant with Nelly I didn't even know that they were together so um it was really cool to to see that all unfold in front of our eyes um but overall it was a really
Starting point is 00:04:41 good experience there was some really amazing pop-ups too like I know we really loved going to the Canva pop-up um where you could like make your own hat they did a little like embroidered hat station and they had like a happy hour with uh mojitos and that was really fun and um then there was also like a google activation and a Snapchat happy hour. And we like went to dinner with this random brand that I had never heard of before. And they're not random at all. And I was like feeling so much imposter syndrome, like sitting there with this brand because they're the ones out there buying a lot of the TV ad places that you, um, placements that you see on, um, cable TV. And they're like the ones behind
Starting point is 00:05:27 everything that get, you know, those ad placements going for brands. And so it was really interesting to meet their team and, um, get to know them a little bit. So that was really fun. And I don't know, I feel like I'm going on forever. And there were also yachts, which we did not know until we got there, which was like so fun, um, just to do a little happy hour on a yacht. It was docked. It wasn't like we went out on the ocean or anything like that. But it was cool. I don't know that I'd ever been on a yacht before that.
Starting point is 00:05:55 So it was really, really fun. No, for sure. It was a great event. And I'm personally very excited to go again. So looking forward to possible next year. And I know we'll definitely be looking out for, you know, announcements around that. So yeah, incredible event. I, I had a blast. So yes. Well, okay. So let's dive into today's topic there. This is a, I hate,
Starting point is 00:06:21 I've almost said this is a juicy one and I don't want to say that term. I'm going to say it because I already did, but it's a good one. So I'm excited to talk through this, but Erica, you and I have kind of been around the block in terms of career. We've freelanced, we've been in corporate, we've worked with large brands, small brands. And I think there's, you would agree with me that there's some like tried and true career lessons that we have taken away from those experiences and just learnings for how do you, how do you land these jobs that you want? How do you network and build
Starting point is 00:06:59 your community and ensure that you're like setting the framework in place for future goals that you have for yourself. And so I'm excited to dive into those tips and strategies we've taken away today. And we have four to share with you. So yeah, we're talking all things career tips today. I'm excited. I love it. I love it. We've definitely heard some challenges recently. You know, the job market has been so wild the past couple of years, people will apply to jobs that in like a matter of 30 minutes have like 500 people applying to these different positions because everyone's just looking for that next step in their career. And I know there's a lot of people out there right now who are currently open for hire and don't have a full-time position at the moment. So anything that we can do to help you in your career, we want to do it. That's why we're talking about this today. I know a lot of
Starting point is 00:07:57 our community members have reached out to us with concerns or like challenges. We've heard a lot of like, I'm applying, but I just can't land an interview or, you know, I'm feeling unfulfilled where I, where I am right now, but I know that the job market is crazy. So I don't want to leave quite yet. And like, is there anything that I can do to position myself where I want to be in my future career? So there's definitely a lot of different things that we could say, but we wanted to narrow it down to four so that we're not talking all day at you. So just these four, we'll dive into them. Tip one, build your network. Tip two, build your personal brand. Tip three, do things that scare you, which is such a good one. And four, build your skills.
Starting point is 00:08:46 So Cassie, could you take us through building your network and why your network is your greatest asset in your career? Yes, I am so, so passionate about this point. And this is like one of the number one things that I either ask people or tell people that come to me and they're like, what do I do? And I'm like, well, number one, who do you know at this company in your industry that you can kind of leverage that relationship? And, you know, there's two way value there. But how can you leverage those relationships to get where you're trying to go? So that's kind of the essential point here. And I think just overall, having people in your network that understand who you are, what your goals are,
Starting point is 00:09:31 what your skill sets are, allow you to be recommendable. And that could be whether you are an entrepreneur trying to get clients, customers, or that could be if you're in a corporate career looking for your next job,
Starting point is 00:09:44 just letting people enter into your story and be advocates for what you're trying to do in your career. Allow them to think of you when it comes to the next opening or the next opportunity. So that's the number one thing. Not just being recommendable, but also these people can become references when a job is asking for those references to speak to your experience and just who you are as an individual. So it's always amazing to be building. Yeah. And I think on that point too, it's so important to remember that just because you leave a position doesn't mean that the people that you've built a network with within your, your past company can't continue to be a part of your network. So on that point, making sure that when you're stepping away from a role,
Starting point is 00:10:39 not to burn bridges, to maintain that relationship, you know, check in with previous bosses, with previous team members, see how they're doing. I really create that intentional connection with them that allows you to leverage those relationships to your point, Erica, for like future recommendations and referrals for future jobs. So, so important there. Uh, but the other thing too, I think people forget sometimes is like, you can still network even if you're not looking for a job currently, or you're not looking for clients currently. So using networking as like a existing ongoing skill that you're developing and utilizing, even if you don't feel like you need something new or different in this time and place.
Starting point is 00:11:21 So I always tell people, I'm like, try to try to set a goal for yourself every week. Is there three new people you can connect with in a week? Is it just one, maybe, you know, at the end of the year, if it's just one a week, that's 52 new connections in your network. And so really being intentional about that, even if that's not a current, you know, next step or need that you have in your career or life. And I think too, is thinking about when you're, when you're trying to figure out who to network with, think about where are you trying to go in your future and connect with people in your dream roles or at your dream brand. So I think this is so important to, before you start
Starting point is 00:12:03 networking, like really have a list of what are these brands I ideally love to work with? Uh, what are the roles that I would like to have and scope out people in those spaces that you can just pick their brain, talk to them, see how they made it, see how they got there. And who knows that could even turn into some sort of mentorship as well. Uh, and I want to make a point too about intentionality. So again, it's so important not to go into these network connections thinking I only want to get something out of this relationship. And so also just being there to help and support that person as well. And the other thing too, is after that initial connection,
Starting point is 00:12:42 like let's say you have coffee virtually or in person with someone keeping that going, like, don't let that be the only time you connect with that person. How can you check in on a regular basis? Or if you see something pops up on LinkedIn, they got a job promotion or they worked on a huge project, you know, reaching out one-to-one and sharing your congratulations and asking them about that and that process and really showing that you're being very aware of what they're doing in their lives. And again, always offering to be value and of help to them as well. And last thing I want to mention is how
Starting point is 00:13:18 do you network? You know, how do you do this? It's easier said than done, but how do you get started and where do you kind of look to build your network? And number one is within your organization. So again, kind of look to people who have those aspirational roles that you want to get, connect with them, speak with them directly. Number two could be industry related groups. You know, maybe it's within the marketing happy hour community. Maybe it's within PRSA. If you're in PR, maybe it's in AMA, American Marketing Association. If you're, if you want a general marketing organization to get plugged into. And then last but not least, I think our favorite place to network Erica is LinkedIn. So just connecting with those people on there, building your personal brand, which I know you'll
Starting point is 00:14:00 talk about in a second and just reaching out to people and setting up a connection that way. So that kind of in a nutshell is my two cents on networking. Yeah. Oh my gosh. Networking on LinkedIn is the best. And I think it's funny because when we say that people are probably like, oh, I hate those people who are in my DMs, just like trying to pick my brain or whatever it may
Starting point is 00:14:24 be. Or like sell me something. We get a lot of those like, Hey, I have this product. Don't you want it? Or like business to business sales people in our DMs. But I don't mean that. Yeah, no, but on that too, that's actually a really good point. I think it's so important when you are reaching out to people on LinkedIn, you know, virtual is, it's always tough to stand out with those engagements, but being, having a personal spin on it, you know, I can't tell you how many times I get DMs on LinkedIn and it's like completely unrelated to what I do. And so taking a moment, look at the person's profile, like how can you show that you actually like are aware of who this person is?
Starting point is 00:15:06 So I think that's important. Oh, yeah, for sure. And as much as you can communicate that in your initial message out to somebody and say, why you want to connect and what kind of overlap there is between your experience or where you like want to get experience and where they are in their career. And honestly, you'll be very surprised if you send like a very personal message that, you know, communicates the reason why you're reaching out, you'll be surprised that how many people will be so willing to just grab a virtual
Starting point is 00:15:37 coffee with you, whether it's like 10 minutes here or there, because everybody has been there before, you know, the reason why we, uh, can share on our podcast and speak with authority about some things is because we've been through it and we like, wish that we had somebody doing this for us. And so that's what we try to be. And so I know there's a lot of people out there who try to do similar things. Um, and so you'll get a lot of return on that, I feel like and some of those relationships may end up developing into like a mentorship opportunity. So you never know. Speaking of LinkedIn, I wanted to talk a little bit more about building your personal brand and personal brand has been such a buzzword I feel like in 2024
Starting point is 00:16:21 so far. And I'm getting the ick a little bit when we talk about personal brand, just because I know there's a lot of people on LinkedIn who are building their personal brands in a falsified way. I've actually encountered a lot of people who are using AI to automatically be posting like five pieces of content every day, automatically be reaching out and being in people's DMs, being in people's comments. We get so many AI generated comments on really old posts, which is really interesting to me just because I'm sure the AI is searching for certain keywords and just like going from there, but
Starting point is 00:17:05 don't do that. But actually building your personal brand is actually truly important. You know, you want to be optimizing your profile so that when you are reaching out and trying to network on the platform, people can browse your profile and realize like who you are, what you do, how there might be some overlap between the two. And I think certain ways that you can optimize your profile, I would say include quantitative data wherever you can. So if there's in your header or your about section, or even in your experience where you denote what you did at individual companies that outlines how many people you have in your community or how many people you've impacted in this role or how many have come to your events or things like that and
Starting point is 00:17:59 include like your press highlights, event recaps, anything that you have that can speak to the expertise that you have and the things that you have done is gonna be really helpful there. Another example is, you know, I think I've seen teaching 40,000 marketers how to do this with my weekly email newsletter. You know, like you definitely want to have that quality quantitative data because then it really speaks to the impact that you are having and the people that you are reaching.
Starting point is 00:18:35 If you're not necessarily somebody who has like their own thing going on, like maybe you don't have a podcast or you don't have a newsletter, you don't have like a community that you can speak to. I think there are other ways that you can optimize your profile that are outside of the quantitative data. I would say take a browse and see if it really represents who you are. I think one thing that we're seeing on LinkedIn too is the emergence of showcasing like your personality versus just like the things that you have done. So I've seen some really clever headers that are like, you know, fourth grade spelling bee champ and like all of this random stuff that just like shows your personality. But then also once they dive a little deeper into your profile,
Starting point is 00:19:25 they can kind of see like all the things that you have done or all the things that you aspire to do. I think that's totally okay to put like aspiring influencer manager or aspiring social media director or whatever you want it to be. I think that's totally okay. Just to like give more context
Starting point is 00:19:42 to even why you're reaching out to people in the first place. I think you can also showcase your authority through content. So whether that's commenting on LinkedIn's like industry news updates, they'll always source like user comments on some of those things. So you can do that. You can create your own content with a newsletter or, you know, writing your thoughts on whether it's like an industry related topic or just like your thoughts on career or your thoughts
Starting point is 00:20:14 on networking or your thoughts on what podcasts you love. Just make sure that you make sure that you call out marketing happy hour if you do that. Just kidding. But then you can also engage and connect with relevant people in your industry by engaging with their content and they will in turn engage with your content and have some really impactful conversations on the platform. I think as much as you can be present on that platform,
Starting point is 00:20:41 it's gonna really help you in your career, whether that's looking for a new job or just trying to grow in your own knowledge and your own learning of the industry that you want to be in. It's always going to be helpful to be optimizing your personal brand and your profile. Other ways that you can build your brand too, you can speak on behalf of your organization at conferences or share your expertise on podcasts like marketing happy hour, or you can start a blog or share your portfolio on your website. And you can attend events like possible where you get to network and meet with a lot of people and, you know, share information and knowledge. And I think that's really impactful
Starting point is 00:21:28 to have those in real life connections too, because a lot of things these days are virtual. I know I just went on and on about LinkedIn and that's all on a computer and it could be totally different when you meet somebody in person. And so it's really good to have that like human to human connection as well. But Cassie, I'm really excited about the next topic that you're going to go over. Yes, yes, yes, yes. So good. By the way, I think personal brand is just overall so important. I think we always think about that in like an entrepreneurship space, which is, of course course very important, but being a corporate career person as well, just having a brand presence online to showcase your
Starting point is 00:22:11 skillset is so important. Uh, but tip number three is do things that scare you. So I am a firm believer that just in general, there's a lot of personality traits and attitude and whatnot that can help push you forward in your career. But specifically something I want to call out is just courage, courage to speak up for yourself, to advocate for yourself in your career, to share your goals with specific people that can help you get to where you're trying to go. And also just overall, constantly challenging yourself and pushing yourself to do literally the things that scare you, uh, can be so, so beneficial for you personally and professionally. And just flexing that muscle
Starting point is 00:22:57 always is, is so important. So a couple of things that come to mind when I, I think of this topic is number one, just speaking up in meetings. We talk about this all the time on the podcast. And this is something that I personally struggled with early on in my career is I would hold on to this idea for a campaign, for a post, you know, whatever it is. And I keep it in because I either was a too afraid to speak up. I was quiet, whatever, or B I thought the idea was stupid. And it's like, if we, if every single person did that with their ideas, imagine like how much we'd
Starting point is 00:23:34 be missing out on in terms of just brand opportunities and things like that. So encourage you to advocate for your ideas, but also advocate for your values and what you want out of your career. You know, this is something that I feel like you and I both have gone through Erica, but just knowing when things aren't right in your, whether it's your, your business and clients that you work with or in your corporate space, you know, things are happening that you feel are unethical. They're just going literally against your personal values as a human being, not being afraid to share that as a challenge you're having with your leader, with your client or whoever it is. And I think having that conversation is a really clear tell of should you move forward in that position or
Starting point is 00:24:26 in that opportunity, or is it time to potentially step away from something? Because I'm a strong believer too in, in career or the people that you work with finding value alignment. And if that's not there, it's really hard to get behind what you're doing. And so that also is so incredibly important. And then another thing too, is just sharing your goals with your leader, with your manager. I think we forget that a lot of times, unless we speak up and share what we're trying to do in our personal careers, our leaders and managers just have no idea. And so just by putting that out there and putting that on the table, the goal with that is that your manager
Starting point is 00:25:05 will keep you in mind for future opportunities that align with your goals, or at least that's the hope, right? But unless we share that openly and out loud, your manager or leader is just not going to know that that's something that you're trying to achieve and you may miss out on a future opportunity in that space. The other thing too, that's kind of simple and ongoing, but just asking to present in meetings, in lunch and learns, work on your presentation skills. Again, this is something early on that absolutely terrified me. In learning to present and to clearly communicate an idea or a concept, I feel is such a valuable asset to have in your career toolkit. And so getting practice with that as much as possible. And there's a lot of opportunities
Starting point is 00:25:52 for presenting and speaking up. And it doesn't have to be like a keynote speech on a stage. It could be something simple as taking three minutes to communicate a new campaign to your client or a new campaign to a partner that you're working with for a new launch or what have you. And I think just overall too with this, a lot of times we feel afraid to reach out to people and network. And so going back to my first point, not being afraid to reach out to even aspirational people with roles and working in different businesses that you would love to work with. I think it seems scary sometimes. And you're like, oh, they're the CMO or, oh, they're the, you know, whatever the role is, they're not going to answer my message and just not being afraid to make that ask.
Starting point is 00:26:38 And lastly, something that I have talked about personally working in my career is if you want to work with a company, even if there's not a role open that fits your skillset, not being afraid to just reach out and ask, and even just ask to get on a list for future opportunities or reach out to a recruiter and just make that connection with them and let them know what your goals and ideas and plans are and see if you can build and maintain that connection and hopefully be an option for a future role. But Erica, tip number four, what do you have for us? Well, quickly, I just wanted to say on that last point that you had, it is so helpful to have an initial relationship with a company that you already have and that's already existing before a job becomes available so I always recommend if there is a particular company
Starting point is 00:27:34 that you are like this would be the perfect company for me I would love to work here like I've personally I think maybe like Pinterest or Spotify on my side, but like, it's like getting in contact with people there and just seeing, you know, how they enjoy their job. What is their role? You know what they do or whatever. And then when a role becomes available, you already have kind of a contact at that, you know, at that company that can put you in touch with the right person to talk about the job if it is the right fit for you. So I don't agree more. Love it. Okay, well, lastly,
Starting point is 00:28:11 I know we're like wrapping this up here. Tip number four is building your skills. And we talk about this a lot. There's a lot of opportunities out there. You know, if you even Google like, how to learn how to do this thing, there will come up with a bunch of like courses and, and articles and podcasts about all of the things. And so, um, I think to narrow down your, um, your options and the things that you want to actually be learning, uh, you can look at some job descriptions for future roles that you hope to hold. I mean, my favorite thing is browsing the LinkedIn jobs page and just like looking at jobs and what's out there and what companies are looking for and the kind of skill
Starting point is 00:28:57 sets that they're looking for within those roles. So you could take a peek at that and then see where you your resume might have some gaps or some skills that are listed on those jobs that you may not currently have and then go from there there's a lot of resources I know Coursera I think is a website where you can learn a lot of things Skillshare there's LinkedIn courses and I think there's even like Google courses and meta courses and all sorts of courses. So anything that you want to learn, I am sure there's something out there that will teach you exactly how to do it. And there's some trusted resources too. I know we listed a lot of those trusted resources in our MHH starter kit, which is a resource that we have that outlines some of
Starting point is 00:29:46 our past episodes and like some like getting started tips for being a part of the marketing happy hour community. But we also included some ways to build your skills in that document that you can download for free too. And I'm sure at the end of this episode, we'll put in our little ad for that, but wanted to mention it there just so that you have a concrete place to go to when you're looking for some of those trusted resources and where to build your skills. But I think something we always recommend is that it is crucial to stay sharp on technology, platforms, soft skills, all of those things, especially as the landscape changes so rapidly. I think in marketing, it can be easy to become complacent with your role and the things that
Starting point is 00:30:31 you do on the day-to-day and you just like forget to challenge yourself and learn more and develop your skillset. But I would say challenge yourself to once a quarter or something like that. Just learn something new, whether it's something as small as how do I create like a UTM tracking link or something like that? Or what the heck is going on with SEO? That's something that I'm learning right now. I was just talking to Cassie. I was like, I understand maybe like 40% of what makes you rank on Google. Like, tell me more. And she was like, I understand like 80%. Here you go. Here's what I know. And so I just think challenging yourself to learn a little bit more and grow a little bit in your career, even if it's not something that you want to grow into in your
Starting point is 00:31:17 career, you never know. I think just expanding your horizons and your knowledge is always going to be helpful. And then, um, you know, ever know who you might, um, come into contact with through networking or whatever it may be that has questions on something that you just learned about. So you can always have that as a topic for your conversations there, but, um, you can also do, uh, things like reading newsletters, listening to podcasts again, freelancing to develop some skills. So say that you want to develop skills in like graphic design, you could freelance in the world of like creating graphics for a brand or for a podcast, like marketing happy hour kind of
Starting point is 00:31:58 needs some graphics. So if you're out there and you want to freelance, chat with us, or you can kind of volunteer for some projects that are within your department, uh, currently in a full-time role. And you know that, uh, somebody on your team is in need of this certain skillset and you maybe don't have it fully, but you're interested in learning that, uh, you can reach out and volunteer for, for opportunities like that. Um, or you can, like I said, online courses, attending conferences is a great way to learn more and just get different perspectives. I know I'm going back to possible because it's so recent and fresh in my mind, but there were a lot of sessions about ads
Starting point is 00:32:38 and like more, I have always been in my career, more focused on brand PR influencer, um, and experiential. And so I'm more of the, like, if you've seen the memes out there, it's like, you're like a little like cute marketing girly. And then like the other side is like the analytics, like, uh, you know, graphs and like computers and like things like that. So I've definitely always leaned one side, but at Possible, there were so many different opportunities to learn about the side of marketing that I feel like I'm not as strong in. And so that was really, really cool. I feel like I got some really good takeaways from that. And so I always encourage people to attend events or even watch events online. There's all sorts of virtual events
Starting point is 00:33:26 you can look up. We'll occasionally share some of those in our newsletter as well. So there's all sorts of resources online. I would just encourage you to take advantage of them because they will exponentially impact your career, even though during the moment when you're just learning a one-off thing, you might be like, oh, I'll never use this. The more little things that you can collect, the more well-rounded you will be and the more marketable you will be as an employee. So always recommend that. Yes. Yes. Always being open and eager to learn and know that you are not ever kind of at your end of learning. And I think even just having that mindset will open you up to including that as like a normal and consistent practice in your life. But I wanted to share to you very quickly as we close out a couple of resources that we have available to you as you are looking to develop in your career or look for your next job or what have you. You know, of course we have this podcast

Starting point is 00:35:31 there just looking to take the next step in their career. And just to recap those four points that we made were one, build your network to build your personal brand.
