For most people in the marketing space, you're probably aware that Instagram and Facebook are
big fans of accounts using video. And video comes in a number
of forms. It comes in standard, Reels, IGTV, Instagram Live, and so on and so forth. So one
of the biggest updates recently that we are super excited about is that Instagram has added live
stream scheduling to drive more awareness and viewers. Social media today released that Instagram has
added a new option to schedule upcoming IG live broadcasts in the app, with users then able to
tap through to get a reminder notification on the day of the broadcast. So you can schedule these
lives up to 90 days in advance, and it allows those notifications to push through to your
followers and those who have asked to be reminded about those lives.
So this is just another way that Instagram is trying to push users to use lives, to use video,
and to really get the biggest benefit out of these features.
So we will certainly be using those.
Make sure to follow us and the Instagram Creators account to get more updates like these on social
media. This week, Cassie and I have the amazing opportunity to chat with our good friends,
Carly and Kirsten, founders of Millennial Social Media Marketing based in Tampa, Florida.
Carly and Kirsten are social media powerhouses and have seen an incredible amount of success in just over a year of owning and leading their agency. Recently, they've seen
an uptick in inquiries about their services and have signed many new clients that they attribute
to a viral Instagram reel. Listen in as we learn from Carly and Kirsten their secret to success
with reels and how to build your own social media marketing agency.
Hi, Carly and Kirsten. How are you guys? We're good. How are you? Doing well. Well,
we're so excited that we get to interview our friends today. But first, I have a very important
question for you. We ask this to all of our Marketing Happy Hour guests, as it is happy hour after all.
So what is in your glass tonight?
So for me, it's Carly speaking.
I'm drinking water because I'm multitasking and I'm working out and doing a podcast with
you guys at the same time.
Love it.
And I'm drinking a coffee that I got on my way home from work. So amazing. Business owner life. Love that. Love that for you guys.
Cassie, what do you got? I'm double fisting as always. I have water. I actually have a venti
water I've been sipping on all day from Starbucks and I have a
hard cider from Strongbow that is quite good so both of those yep that sounds good I literally
am just sipping on water tonight but I may after this episode go over across the street there's a
coffee shop and cocktail bar across from me that has a coffee Negroni and I am dying to try it.
So I'll probably head over there after we wrap up this interview.
For now, that is awesome.
I need to go over there and try that next time I'm in town.
But anyways, guys, we are so excited to dive in.
But first, we would love to hear a little bit of background on your agency.
Obviously, Erica and I know it very well.
But for those of you out there who are listening and who are not familiar, we would love for
you guys to kind of share a little bit of background on both of your careers and also
how Millennial came to be.
And kind of a bonus question as well is we personally love the story
of how you guys chose the name millennial but if you would love to share that with the audience we
would love to hear that also yeah um so it's kind of a long story so we'll try our best to really
sum it up um for me personally I was working at corporate this is Carly speaking by the way for
those of you who are listening um I was working for corporate at Blumen Brands, which is the headquarters for Outback
Steakhouse, Bonefish Grill, Fleming's, and Carrabba's. And I was working on the Bonefish
Grill concept. And I was let go probably mid-February about what is that four weeks before lockdown or kind of COVID really hit hard
and I found myself jobless Kirsten's dad is actually my sister's boss he is a doctor over
in Newport Ritchie and he literally texted me like the day after I lost my job saying
does this mean you can come work for me now and do my marketing? And I said, okay, I guess so.
So I came over there and I started off just doing their like social media and stuff.
And then that's how I met Kirsten.
And yeah, actually not Kirsten.
I'll let you tell your side and then we can kind of sum it all up.
Yeah.
So I was a senior in college at the time.
I went home for spring break.
And before I could go back, they had, like, shut my school down.
And I was never going back.
So I was kind of, like, freaking out about what I was going to do after college.
I didn't know if I'd get to go to my internship.
And that was about the time that I met Carly.
I think two days after we met, my dad was like like I really think you guys should start a social media
agency um and that was kind of it we thought crazy yeah I thought he was crazy at first I told him no
at first actually until he called me the next day saying that his daughter was interested so because
she was interested then I was interested um and the she was interested, then I was interested.
And the rest was history. We literally started it in the back office of a med spa. And for those of you don't know what that is, it's just like aesthetics, it's injections, lasers, Botox,
all that beautiful stuff. And we were in the back office, started our company literally back there,
this tiny little room when everybody else was locked down. Like the only things that were open were doctor's offices and grocery stores and
things like that. And we, you know, we just did it. And surprisingly enough, we were able to kick
off our business very quickly during that time. You'd be surprised how many people needed social
media during lockdown. And we were able to provide a need for those companies and here we are today
a year and a half later. That's awesome. Can you tell us a little bit about the clients that you
serve kind of like what industries they're in and that kind of thing? Yeah so we have like a pretty
wide array of clients. When we initially, we thought we were going to only be
working with med spas, because that's kind of what we started with. And then we realized that
we wanted to like expand our portfolio and try to find other businesses that we thought that like
our business would mesh well with. So we currently have med spas, hair salons, an attorney. We've been signing a lot of small businesses and just brands themselves, which has been really exciting to be a part of. cash lounges, we have CBD companies, we have now an athleisure brand who does like workout clothes.
Literally, when I say we have like one type of client in every industry, I would say we about
touch all of it. We also do very large influencers to like on a very large scale, we manage their
content, post their content and manage their collaborations as well, which we don't name those influencers out loud. But that is something that
we offer as well. So yeah, we, we grew from probably like three clients to surpassing the
double digits. And within like, I don't know, maybe five to six months of having our company.
And we expanded very quickly. And we're very, very grateful.
And we only continue to expand. That's amazing. And are you guys only in the Tampa Bay area? Or
do you have clients all over? We are pretty much anywhere and everywhere.
Currently, primarily Florida, but we like today, we were talking to potential clients that could be in Nevada. Like
it really, we don't have a limit, but currently it's DC, Miami, Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville.
That is awesome. Well, the next question that we have for you kind of leans into that growth a
little bit. Recently, we've noticed that you've been honing in on your real strategy and it's
really been paying off for you. One of your reels actually just went viral and has over 1 million views. So can you tell us
a little bit about your strategy behind that and what started happening when that reel went viral?
Kirsten, I'm going to let you talk about that. So we, this is like the craziest thing we made this reel in maybe 10 minutes um we have
our assistant come in one day a week and she filmed it like in the middle of the day we had a small
break we posted the reel and kind of weren't expecting it to like do anything after that um
our strategy up to that point was just making sure we were including just
as many reels as grid posts because we were seeing that it was driving our engagement more.
So we posted this reel and about a week later, it hit 10,000 views. And at that point, we were like,
oh, this is great. Like this is the best. We thought we were so cool. Yeah. And then it hit
100,000 and then it hit 500,000. then it hit five hundred thousand and we were just
in shock we would wake up every morning we get like 50 um dms a day about inquiries for
us to work with people it wow it's been crazy yeah we i would have to say we didn't know at
first like we weren't we made a lot of other reels that we thought were a lot better that we put a lot of thought into that we thought would blow up. And
then when this one did, we were like, okay, what was it about this reel that like blew up? And to
be honest, like, I would say it's a mixture of so many different small things, but it was such an
incredible learning point from it. But we low key feel a little bit like starstruck and a sense of
like, wow, like 1 million people have like seen our video, know who we are, like know who Millennial is.
And obviously, it's an absolute dream.
We have a small agency in Tampa.
So getting that exposure is like an absolute dream.
And then obviously, having all these brands reaching out to us, like Kirsten and I's schedules have been insane the past two weeks trying to meet with different brands talk with different you know companies that have been reaching out to us um but it's
it's been amazing awesome and for people that don't know um what was the reel about like what
did you put out there content wise oh my gosh it was a Drake song. Um, Kirsten, I think, what did it say? It said, um, go ahead.
I don't know if you remember better than me. I'm going to be honest. I don't think I do.
It was a voiceover of a Drake song and it was asking people, why should you hire social media
managers? And the video was four seconds long, literally four seconds. It said, where do I even really start is all we said.
It was so quick.
To note, I also messed up the words when I mouthed them.
So I'm like shocked it still went viral,
even though I screwed it up and we still posted it.
That is so funny.
Well, I think it like, you know, even though it's so simple,
I think it kind of spoke volumes in a way. So maybe that's why it was so compelling. And that kind of goes to the point where, you know, for us, we tell our clients, test things, you know, test content types, test, humor, test, like pretty much everything, because you really never know, especially with reels, what is going to blow up and what isn't going to blow up so you never know until you actually try it like I personally
had a reel the other day where it was me and like you guys I filmed it in 30 seconds it's literally
me like talking about my nicknames that my siblings call me and it has like it has like 300,000 views
it's ridiculous but like again that takes to the point
that you just have to try things out and you never know what could really come from that I think
reels is a great place to be creative and different and stand out and that's the way to kind of make
it you know go crazy so quick I love that question that we didn't write down how do you guys feel about tiktok versus reels that's such a hard one okay so i personally have a like a love relationship with tiktok
kirsten i i don't have a personal tiktok i don't even have tiktok downloaded on my personal phone
like if i have to do anything on tiktok it's on our work phone. My mom actually has one I found out last night.
She doesn't make videos. She just watches them. But TikTok really is like an incredible platform.
It just doesn't have all of the features that Instagram does. So when you're working with a business and you're trying to get people to shop directly, like Instagram is incredible for
clicking a link and being able to shop
through the app.
And I think that that's one thing TikTok is missing.
I totally agree with Kirsten.
I feel like that's,
I do love TikTok.
I don't really know which one I love more per se.
I love both.
The reason why I love TikTok more is because like,
for example,
we just had a new client who who we literally made their tiktok
five days ago and she already has like over hundreds of thousands of views thousands of
likes she has i think now a thousand or if not over a thousand followers within like days whereas
reels her reels have 10k views or 15k views and she's only gained like 10 followers so
i definitely think both
platforms are you know very beneficial but what Kirsten said about reels for our businesses for
for millennial clients we tend to lean more on reels because their business is an Instagram
there's an ability for them to click their link to their website shop their products and things
like that yeah that so that goes directly into my next question for you guys. So when client and their reels is extremely different.
We do try to make sure that we're doing enough reels versus grid posts to make sure that Instagram is serving them well, because I think what we've noticed the most recently
is that the more you're posting reels, the better your reels are doing.
So that's like something that's been really important.
Yeah, I agree with that. I feel
like we have actually shifted our strategy with the majority of our clients to be more reel focused.
However, it definitely does increase the engagement with reels. But the grid post,
unfortunately, the engagement does kind of decline. So, you know, it's just like an ongoing
kind of trying to figure out what works
best. It comes for the viral real ideas. We try to make sure that on a day to day, we're staying
up to date with all of the trending reels and their industry that they're in. We save them like
daily all day or send them to our client. We make sure that the next time we meet up, we either
completely content batch them themselves and send it to us, depending on, you know, our client schedules and things like that.
But we want to make sure that we're always capturing the most on trend stuff before they go too viral, where it's a little bit too oversaturated with all of our clients.
Awesome. And then, so I know there's a lot of, there's different kind of trend
categories within reels, right? There's audio that's trending, but there's also, you know,
dances or certain things that people do within the videos that are trending as well. So do you
guys find, I don't know if you've seen this as kind of a trend within your clients businesses but
do you find that completely copying kind of a visual trend performs well or is it mostly just
utilizing that trending audio that you found to be beneficial I would say our biggest key thing
that Kirsten and I have noticed is having like the font the first of all like the text on the
screen very large and easy to see and like especially when it's on like the font the first of all like the text on the screen very large and easy to see
and like especially when it's on like the grid post plus even the reels or the explorer and then
the thing about the text as well is the text has to be very clear and it can't be too niched
so like if it you know a reel about picking out your outfit you don't want it to say like follow
me around picking up my outfit today it needs to be like um my top three fall ootds or like it has to like fit a specific niche and be
very simple it clicks in someone's you know head very easily because about people who are like just
swiping on the explore page constantly um that's one trend that we we make sure that we are consistent with all of our time
here so i don't know if you have something to add to that that and i would definitely say that
audios are really important when you want a reel to perform well because if you they're
spalling you they're looking at audios which means they'll stop on your page and they will
view your video they'll save your and they will view your video,
they'll save your video, they'll share your video. So that's really important for helping them grow.
And that's why we do try to like the audios and the voiceovers in any of our clients accounts that we can, because it really does help exposure. Yeah. Yeah, that's such great insight. And I actually have another
question that we didn't write on your sheet. I'm thinking about all of the women business owners
that I work with every day with Entreprenista Media, and they're really just starting out with
their businesses. What's a tip that you have for social or real
strategy for somebody that's just starting out their account? Oh, that's a good one. When we
I don't think the way we started it is probably the best example to go off of. I'm laughing at
us because I remember when Kirsten and I literally posted probably like eight posts in one day to fill up our grid. Yeah. But honestly, so I'll give a little insight. I won't say what or actually Kirsten and I are
kind of working on something new. And on that new project, we had to create Instagram page for it.
And the first thing we did was a reel because we know reels are powerful. They reach more people.
And right off the bat, the reel got
thousands of views. We gained like probably 10, maybe 15 wanderer followers who wouldn't have
known us before then. So I think having like a new account, a brand new account, first of all,
the Instagram algorithm is going to favor you now over anybody else. So utilizing reels is going to
be key. Awesome. Yeah. And that's actually funny. It takes us
into our next question here. I wrote down on our document, we could talk about reels all day,
but we also want to talk a little bit about owning your own agency. I imagine it's a 24 seven
commitment, you know, that requires a lot of discipline and organization. So what are some
of the best tools that you guys utilize to
stay organized and on top of things for your clients? So the biggest thing for us is probably
a Google Calendar and Trello. So Trello is a platform that we use to plan the majority of our
clients content with. And it gives us a way that we can keep everyone in the loop. Everyone can see what's
going on. Anyone can make changes to it. And I feel like it really keeps us on track to physically
be able to go in and like move over a post once it's been done or like talk about the edits that
have been made. And with a Google calendar, we put everything on it. If we have birthday announcements that need,
if it's like a national holiday that we're posting about for clients, like everything
goes on this Google Calendar. So we know what's going on at all times. Even our personal appointments.
Yeah, you know, everything that we're doing all the time. Nail appointment, hair appointment,
date night. Well, not all day day but if the date night is during the
week I for sure put it on the calendar definitely yeah I'll I'll second that for sure I think
Trello is such a huge feature and I I was so big into using like handwritten to-do lists for the
longest time and then I finally kind of broke out of that and got into Trello and I've been loving it so I will
second that for sure yeah we used to do the handwriting thing and then we realized if you
don't have that notebook with you you know nothing that is true there were countless times that we
were like shoot I forgot my notebook at home great I don't know yeah yeah absolutely and for me I
learned this method a long time ago actually probably when I worked at Social Fly in New York, but it's this handwritten to do method called Kanban method. I don't know if you guys have ever heard of that. But it's like to do doing and done. So you have like kind of three flowing lists. And for me, for some reason, that helps my brain kind of process everything because it's moving and I know what's going on what I'm working on what I'm not working on so yeah so definitely like check it out
it changed my life and I will not do anything else now but anyways Trello is is key I love Trello
um taught me that because probably my biggest struggle as like being like a startup business
like you know small agency is like not knowing prioritizing
like what have I finished what needs to be completed what needs to go everything and then
that's when like you actually can't get anything done and the place I think yeah I'm saving that
for later yes absolutely so for both of you all being business owners, I know it means you are preoccupied.
You're constantly, you have things going on in your head a million times. There's always ideas
that you come up with. I know I sit in bed and I think of a content idea to write it down on my
phone, like at 1am in the morning. It's like, it's ridiculous. So how do you guys kind of,
whether it's balance or how do you, how do you guys kind of calibrate
your days or your schedules to prioritize things at different times?
Make sure you're prioritizing, you know, family, your husband, your boyfriend, your,
you know, your friends and stuff like that.
What does that kind of balance look like for you guys?
Let me start off by telling you guys that voice
chatting on in on your i'm on your i messages is a lifesaver for business we do it all day every day
it could be saturday and i see a little voice message thing from
on the weekends that we can save it for whenever it's not like an emergency
so if we we think of these ideas all day every, I think that's just like an entrepreneur thing,
not just a social media agency thing, but like, there's an entrepreneur. The problem that we have
is we get ideas in the middle of the night in the morning all day. And that voice memo thing on our
messages is like literally the way we get it all out and talk about it and not forget about it.
But work-life balance is definitely a struggle. I've gotten better at it. I think the hardest
thing is when you come out of college and you know, Kirsten's more recently out of college.
I've been out of college for like four years. So it's kind of sad that I'm saying this, but like
I still struggle like balancing personal life and work and those things and going to bed on time,
waking up early because I,
I'm, I have that schedule of staying up all night, studying, getting no sleep and then,
you know, napping throughout the day. So I still struggle with it. Like even right now I was
working out, um, literally while posting and editing posts and answering emails, like not
even focusing on my workout. And sometimes I have to make those sacrifices and do that. But it's I'm still working on it. Yeah, and I would definitely say that, like, we try to set times when we are
and are not reachable. One of us always has our work phone next to them. So even if we're, you
know, not looking at it, like if we get a text and something is urgent, or there's like an emergency,
then we can always be there for that.
But I feel like us separating from technology for a little bit every day is like really important.
Yeah, that's that's actually I'm really glad you just said that, because tomorrow morning I literally am purposely scheduling something for myself to put my phone away, like in my car for two two hours whether it's paddle boarding or doing yeah I think
that's super super super important to make sure you have time for yourself and the things that
you enjoy outside of work because you can definitely get into a pattern where it's like
all work and no play and you feel just exhausted you can do that even if you're just working in like any job, not necessarily
owning your own business. So super, super, super important. Also, one more question that we didn't
prepare for, but what is it like owning your own business and looking for team members? Do you guys
have team members that help you out with your clients work
right now? Do you have interns? What's that like for you? Great question. Yeah. So finding team
members, it's hard because, well, first off, a lot of people don't want to work right now. So
that makes things super difficult. I do have to say, we, the people that we currently have working for us are pretty freaking awesome.
Yeah. And we've had people in the past that have worked for us that are also like pretty freaking
awesome. So if you take the time, I think to find the right person and to like truly make sure that
they're a fit, like you can usually tell within the first 10 minutes of meeting someone if they click with you.
And I think looking for that is really important.
You know, it's not always, okay, someone might be more qualified and have more experience, but there also might be someone who's super teachable and really seems like they're going to be a long term asset to your business.
And I feel like if you make that decision, it's going to be a long-term asset to your business. And I
feel like if you make that decision, it's going to help you out in the long run.
A hundred percent. We've definitely had some growth. I would say one of, I would like prepare
or warn any business owner who's just starting out. Finding the right team is definitely going
to be a growing pain. It is for all new businesses, trying to find the right people who want to grow
with you and go through those, you know, hurdles with you.
That's probably been one of our biggest struggles.
Like you would think obtaining clients or retaining clients is a hard thing or like, you know, or producing content, delivering.
No, no, no.
The biggest struggle really is like building that base of employees that will just help propel your business forward.
But I believe we're on the right track
and I'm really excited with the people that we have.
That's awesome.
Yeah, and that's so true.
It's really about who's gonna be the best fit for your team
and whether or not they're the most seasoned employee,
if they're willing and excited to learn,
they're like the best people
that you can have on your team for sure.
So our last question for you both
is there's something you know now
that you wish you knew
when you were just starting your career?
This is a question that we love to ask all of our guests.
So what do you think?
Oh, Kirsten, go first.
I gotta think about this.
Okay.
I think it would probably be that you really have to like for yourselves and you really do have to make sure that you know we have gotten
in this pattern of we don't talk about anything we don't act like anything is said and done until
like the ink is dried and the money is in our
account like not always literally but you really do have to be cautious with like what you're doing
and make sure that you're taking all the right steps because you could think that you have
something like completely made and it seems like everything's going to be smooth sailing. And then all of a sudden, like, you're drowning.
So definitely like being cautious with the people you surround yourself with.
I think we've gotten really lucky with people that we have come in contact with and clients that we have in the relationships that we've built with our job.
Because we truly do have like some amazing people where, you know, they work in a different industry and we had a question or like needed to lean on them for something, they would always be there.
Yeah, that's a really good one. Wow. I would definitely second that. And my other thing is
maybe don't, I guess, like, you're okay, I'm so I'm so sorry. I'm trying to put this into words
like, okay, you can't please everyone, I guess is what I'm saying I'm so sorry I'm trying to put this into words like okay you can't please
everyone I guess is what I'm saying um that's something I wish I would have told myself in
the beginning is you can't please every single client that's going to come your way you're going
to have some some losing moments you're going to have people who just want to see eye to eye with
you you're going to have people who they don't even understand social media the way you do so
they just automatically think that you like you know oh, oh, it's terrible, or this isn't right. But it's like, they're just very uneducated in that area.
And it's just like, you can't think that if you get 100 clients, all 100 clients are going to be
extremely pleased. And I think you're going to exhaust yourself, burn yourself out. And I think
Kirsten and I learned that very quickly. And like the first year of our business. And I'm grateful
that we did learn that very quickly. Because honestly, I think if we didn't learn that we wouldn't be where we are today
and we wouldn't be as successful and established, I would say. And cause I think that builds very
strong, um, business owners too. And you are not working to please your clients. You're working
because you love what you do and you're passionate.
Awesome. Yeah, I agree wholeheartedly with what you guys said. I think a lot of clients do think they know better about social media and marketing most of the time. And it's,
it's like in reality, they wouldn't hire you if they knew more than you did. So I think at the
end of the day, yeah, if they offer ideas or they're like, why aren't you doing it this way? Just being able to, you know, be strong and bold and stand up and say, you know, this is why we recommend this. And, you know, we're the experts. So I think that can be tough sometimes to have that balance of, you know, I'm here to kind of, you know, make them happy in a way, but I also have to push my opinion across because that's why they hired me. So I totally
agree with that. So as we close out, guys, I would love to hear a couple things. One, how can we
find you guys millennial on social? And then how can we find you all and connect with you all
individually on social as well? Oh, I'm because of I'm already thinking of Kirsten's
social media page Kirsten should go first because she needs to tell the little backstory behind it
so I actually like don't use my social media page personally at all anymore like I think if I'm like tagged in a story I'll repost it but I haven't posted on
Instagram since like 2018 so but when you know when Kirsten and I are famous we're gonna revamp
it for her right there you go maybe one day I will let Carly run an Instagram for me I've been
since like the day I met her like just let me do it for you so you can find millennial at
it's millennial m-i-l-l-e-n-n-i-a-l not many people know how to spell it
sm marketing so there are two m's in that so smm marketing
people never get it right so I'm gonna make sure they understand
yes we'll also put it in the show notes so people can can click on it too I know some Instagram. People never get it right. So I'm going to make sure they understand.
Yes.
We'll also put it in the show notes so people can click on it too.
They can just laugh at me for trying to pronounce it.
And then you can find me.
I am actually a style blogger, travel blogger, pretty much everything.
Carly Ann Thompson on Instagram.
And we do have a TikTok for Millennial. We have like three videos,
but you know, please go ahead and follow us because we promise we'll go ahead and post some
more stuff. I love that. Wait, we never heard how you chose the name Millennial. How did that come
to be? Oh my gosh. Yeah, we didn't. Oh my gosh. Actually, Kirsten and I were struggling finding
a name for quite a few days
her dad was actually urging us like you have to find a name because we have to get this started
like you got to get an loc because we were getting ready to sign an loc and um which is actually kind
of a good thing i guess we're signing clients and we're not even a business yet but um kirsten and
i were texting back and forth these like i think that they were pretty decent names nothing really was like they're basic like any other marketing company you see out there like
yeah we didn't stand out at all and um my dad i was at lunch with my dad and um i was telling him
about a show i was watching on hulu i think yeah called younger yes yeah where she works for like
a publishing company and then hillary Duff is like the one of
the main actresses, she starts her own publishing company called millennial publishing or something
like that. And my dad literally goes, Why don't you name your business millennial? And I'm like,
you know what, dad? That's why not. And so I texted Kirsten and like, immediately, she was like,
yes, that's it. Like, that's the name. And it so happened to be so perfect because
I'm a millennial. I'm actually like the year right before I'm a Gen Z, Kirsten's a Gen Z.
So sad. So, but it's like, that's the market we are targeting on social media. That's what brands
are struggling with to get. And it's just, it literally works perfectly. We hire millennials
to work for us and millennials are the generation of social media. It was kind of born with us.
We kind of started the whole content creation thing and life that everyone's doing now.
All the Gen Zers are now TikTokers, but we are the OGs of content creators. That is awesome.
