Hey there, welcome to the Marketing Happy Hour podcast, where each week we're learning
career-defining advice, powerful social media strategies, unique creative tips, groundbreaking
influencer marketing tactics, and more from marketing experts that represent some of the
world's leading brands.
Let's dive in. Grab a drink and join your hosts hosts, Cassie and Erica, for this week's episode.
Hey, Cassie. We made it to the end of season four. How are you feeling?
I am feeling good. This is so crazy that we're already four seasons in, but here we are. We've
made it. I know. it's wild to me.
I don't even know where the whole season went.
I'm like, what just happened?
What were the past two months?
But whatever.
Well, before we get into it today, I just wanted to ask what you have in your glass
tonight since this is marketing happy hour.
After all, we always have to share.
Yes, I have a few things on my desk today. Um, I have water
Gatorade and hot broth. Um, and there is a reason for this. I have not been feeling the best today,
so got to stay hydrated and all different forms, but what are you drinking today?
Absolutely. That reminds me of earlier this season when I had
some like dental work done and I was like scared to eat solid food for a week I was like living off
of soup and smoothies so I totally feel that yep at least right now I have an Aperol spritz so
I read jealous I read or not read every time I say, every time I see something on Tik TOK,
I always, it always comes out as I read this somewhere, but it's not what I thought on
Tik TOK.
I saw on Tik TOK that there's like a shortage of Aperol right now, but then I looked it
up and I couldn't find anything about it.
So I don't know if it was a hoax, but if there is a shortage of Aperol and you're listening
to this and you love Aperol, come over.
We'll have Aperol together.
Oh my goodness.
I currently don't have any on my bar cart, so I should probably go get some before the shortage becomes real.
That's a little scary.
Yeah, you can find it.
Who knows?
So Cassie, what were some of your favorite moments from this season?
I have so many. So first one off the top of my head is
definitely Ashley heads episode. Ashley works on the team for Loncomb and she's an amazing
copywriter and content creator for their team. And she was actually one of the guests that we
heavily talked about meta with and kind of
the future of the marketing world.
And so hearing all about her side of things and some of the education that she's been
doing on that topic has been really great to hear.
And it definitely encouraged me to also start to look into those things because as we discussed
in the episode, that is a world that is going to catapult into the current
insights of our industry very quickly here soon. And so I definitely need to take some time to
learn more about it, but Ashley is a friend of mine and I've known her for a very long time.
So just overall was awesome getting to check in with her and see what she's been up to in her
career. And I'm so proud of her, but yes, that was a fun one. What about you, Erica?
Oh, I loved that one. That conversation was so good. And it was so timely too. I remember I was
like sitting in a training about the metaverse like earlier that week. And then we had that
recording and I was like, yes, I'm so ready to talk about this. But one of the standout moments for me was having
the Tampa duo of best friends, Carson Murray and Jess Massey on our podcast. Carson is a ethical
copywriter. And it was so cool to hear from her, just her perspective around coffee that converts
and maybe why she doesn't love that term so much because it's more about
creating community instead of creating just sales. In the end, you'll get more sales when you
generate some really good community. And then Jess, her good friend, talked to us a lot about
productivity, which was incredible and so timely because I feel like this season I've been
struggling with that in my own life and my
own job.
And it was just so cool to hear her perspective on hustling sanely, remaining calm in times
of craziness at work.
So I really, really enjoyed both of those.
And then also, I really liked talking with you, Cassie, in our Ask Marketing Happy Hour
segment that we did,
episode that we did. I want to do more of that. How do you feel about that?
I know we totally should. I think that's just a lot more opportunity for you and I to share our
voices on different topics and talk about some other things outside of what we discuss with our
guests. So if you're listening and there is a topic that you'd love to hear us discuss,
please, please let us know on Instagram or LinkedIn.
We'd love to share those things with all of you.
But yeah, I loved Jess and Carson were amazing.
And they're two of my favorite people, I'd say in the Tampa Bay area to follow
just because they both share so much
insightful knowledge in their industries. And Carson's amazing with her ethical copywriting
background. That's kind of a concept that I've never really heard about before, but it's so true.
We talk about building community on social media so much, but we don't really talk about how that translates in different areas of
marketing. And so email and just copywriting in general is such a huge space for that.
And then Jess, of course, I had a whole page of notes of productivity tips from her. So loved
hearing from that, but a couple of my other ones that I really enjoyed too. It's so funny. All of
these people that were my favorite moments, I have personal connections too. So Macy is another one I've worked with her on a couple of client projects
and she talked all about web design and SEO optimizations to make no matter how big or small
your website is. So this was an episode that is certainly useful for any marketer in any industry
of any size. And so especially for entrepreneurs
building their own websites, there's a lot of just entry-level tips that she shared that anyone can
utilize and apply to their website. So definitely love that. And then Liz as well, Liz Doan. So we
had her on the show and her and I were roommates in New York city. And we just talked a lot about career,
about the benefits of moving to a big city, what that can do for your career and, uh, all of your
professional areas that you're working in. And then a lot of PR tips as well. She has amazing
agency experience. And so the benefits of working for agencies, but also just PR in general and how
to approach those media relationships.
I really enjoyed that conversation with her.
Yeah, absolutely.
I loved her point about the agency world and how that can be like the best path in order
to gain the most skills.
I loved that point that she made because you do really come out of agency world with a
very well-rounded skill set. And that's something also that Haley Tracker
also touched on a little bit is like career advances and how to navigate that. And then
she also talked a lot about your brand's persona and identity. And I thought that was really cool
too. She previously worked at WeddingWire and Under Armour and Beakman 1802. And she's now
at Tracker and just, you know, it's really awesome to see her journey and really enjoyed her episode
as well. Yeah, absolutely. She was great. And one thing that stands out to me about her,
and it's so funny because she ended up doing a webinar with Alice Hampton, who we also had on the show, uh, actually not too long after we recorded with Haley.
And you can tell just by the way that other brand partners talk about Haley, she goes
above and beyond with building relationships.
So just doing these little things that make a lasting impression to these brands that
she's collaborating with.
I mean, that's something that we could probably take into our life in a number of ways, but I love how just taking one step
further with those relationships, surprising and delighting her client partners, but also just
people within her company as well. She makes a big, huge impact among, um, among the people in
her industry, because within the industry of influencer
marketing relationships are such a big deal. And so, uh, she just brought some really great
insights to the table about how to enhance relationships and build them further.
Definitely. I think the theme of our season, if we had to sum it up, was probably like
community connections and just being really real about career
you know changes and things like that or tough situations in your career industry so I think
that was kind of the running thread throughout all the episodes this season which was really
really cool to see that you know everyone was kind of on the same page with some stuff so
definitely if you haven't listened to the episodes that we were just chatting about,
go through, catch up before season five comes along. Okay, Cassie, it's time for our favorite
segment of all of our season wrap ups. And that is rapid fire questions for the host. So I'm going to
be asking you a bunch of questions that I found literally by Googling, you know,
get to know your questions. I love it. I'm ready. Amazing. Okay. What is something new
that's happening in your life right now? Oh, something new that's happening in my life.
I, well, this isn't really super new, but we bought a house in
December. So doing a lot of DIY projects around the house. What about you? Yeah. It's fun to see
all the things coming to life in your house too. It's like every time I come over, there's something
new. Like last time I came up, I had all those photos up in the hallway and it looks so good.
We're so excited. Thank you. Yeah, we're trying. It's been,
it's been fun. Lots of work, but very fun. Yes. I love that. Um, me something new that's
happening in my life. Um, the biggest thing is I'm just gearing up for the summer. I'll be
in Michigan for the majority of the summer. So that'll be really fun. Um, it's just like
the place that I relax the most. So I'm like very, uh, but that's really it right now.
Okay.
Next question.
What is your favorite number?
Nine.
Don't ask why.
Yes.
So there's a quick backstory to this.
So Carson Palmer was a football player for the Cincinnati Bengals and his last name's
Palmer.
My maiden name is Palmer. So we grew up loving the number nine. All of us use that number for
all of our sports. So it's always been a favorite of mine. Oh, that's so fun. Uh, mine is 27. And
for literally no reason other than the fact that I liked the number seven and I just thought 27
was a cool number and now I am 27. So it's kind of weird,
but apparently too, there's this like 27 curse or something. And it's like,
there's a Buzzfeed article. And I think it's like 27 is an amazing age. If you make it through,
which is, I'm like, what the heck did a lot of people like, Oh my gosh, 27, hopefully not. So send prayers,
uh, 27 is a tough age, but I haven't really experienced that yet. And I'm almost,
yeah, hopefully, hopefully nothing bad happens. Um, okay. Next thing, it kind of relates back to
what we were talking about this season with Jess, with her productivity tips. And this question is,
how do you start your day? So I have adopted ever since actually our conversation with Jess,
I've adopted a little bit of a morning routine myself, just because she reminded me of the
importance of doing that and how it just sets your day off on the right foot. So I wake up around
seven and I read my Bible. I exercise. Um, I now ice roll again, thanks to Jess, a little reminder
from her. And then I do some cleaning around the house. So I'll do like a 10 minute, super clean,
just tidy up the home and get my day off on the right foot.
What about you? Oh, I love that. I don't have a solid morning routine at the moment, but a lot
of times I wake up, I usually wake up around, at least at this point, I wake up at like six 45
and I do my devotion. I read my Bible a little bit and then I make coffee and that's my favorite start
to the day. So I'm either usually doing some cleaning or some reading or some like personal
work stuff before I jump in my work day. So that's what it is, but yeah. Okay. Two very rapid fire.
You're not allowed to explain what subject were you best at in school?
English. Yeah. Same. And math actually. What subject were you the worst at in school?
Science. Mine was PE. I'm just like, oh gosh.
Okay. Next one. Uh, what is success to you?
Oh, I think just being happy and having proper balance in my life and yeah, just being happy
overall. I know that's a general answer. What about you? No, I would say the exact same thing. I think I don't care like what I'm making money wise or what my output is productivity wise.
Like as long as I am happy and healthy and the people around me are happy and healthy,
that's success to me. So, yeah. Yeah. That's it. And that's one thing for everyone that is in their early twenties, listening to this,
that is something, you know, the, the money success and the career success, something
that will be important to you up until a certain point.
And you'll just realize being happy and having balance in your life is just so much more
important.
And I'm learning that and I'm trying to work towards that now in my life, which is so freeing.
Oh yeah. I love that. Okay. A couple more that are just one word. You're not allowed to explain.
Ready? Okay. What's your favorite flower?
Peony. Oh, same. Oh, I didn't know that about each other. Okay. What is your favorite board game?
Life. I was going to say life, but also clue. I love clue. Oh yes. What
is the best concert you ever attended? Oh my goodness. You don't say John Mayer. I'm going
to be upset. I know I was going to say John Mayer, Justin Bieber, and don't make fun of me,
but Justin Bieber is very entertaining and very good live. So John Mayer, Justin Bieber and don't make fun of me, but Justin Bieber is very entertaining and very good live. So John Mayer, Justin Bieber. Yeah, I'm sure it looked really good. The Justin
Bieber concert. So I love so good. I went to two of the, uh, John Mayer sob rock tour shows and
he played different songs at each one and it was really good. And they felt like different shows.
So both of them were really good. So those are my favorite. Love him so much. Two more
questions. Okay. What did you want to be when you grew up? A dolphin trainer. Oh, I love that. I
always wanted to be like a singer or like a, I actually wrote a song about wanting to be a
supermodel. It's really, Oh my goodness. I need to hear that. Oh no, you do not need to hear that.
That's locked away in a vault.
But I actually did recently, I have a couple of friends who are musicians, and I recently like sang the songs of them, and they made up a whole new verse for it. So you're looking out for that.
I'm sure it's going to debut on their album somewhere. So yeah. And then my last question
is, did you take a career test in high school? And if so,
what did it say you should be? I did. And to be honest, I do not remember what it said. It
probably said photographer or something like that. Yeah. My, I just, I remember we had like a
personal, I don't know what it was called, like personal finance or like career class that we had
to take our senior year. We had to put it together like a portfolio and like a senior
project around whatever we wanted to be. And I remember taking this career test and literally
told me that I should, my first one was like standup comedian. My second one was a motivational
speaker. And my third one was like lawyer or something crazy. So my goodness,
I am none of those things. However, I feel like a podcast host is somewhere in between comedian
and motivational speaker. So like that works, right? Absolutely. I love that. Okay. Actually,
I do have one more question. I had a couple more on this list, but I feel like we've,
we've been in this segment for a little long, but I do want to ask because we both love
branding and we both love beverages. And that's kind of why we did the little tie-in with marketing
happy hour. What's your best tonight, all that stuff. So is there any brands that you have
recently tried that you like? Yes. So I have Laneige sitting on my desk right now,
their sleep mask, which I use during the day, even though it is for night. Um, and I love it.
So I would say that brand and rare beauty, I also officially started tapping into, and I
absolutely love the products. How about you? I love that. I, um, recently went, there was a pop-up grocer pop-up in Miami
earlier this year. And I went there and got a bunch of things to try. I specifically went to
Miami to go to this pop-up, like how lame I am and how like much I love branding. And they just
had their additional pop-up in like DC or something. And I was looking at flights to go
just for it, which is so lame. But anyway, I tried these, um, I think they were, they're either
backed by Sarah Highland or they are for brands and I'm not entirely sure. So don't come for me,
Sarah Highland, but, um, the source chocolate vitamins, it's like, it's basically like an M and M and it has like
either collagen or I don't know what inside they have a bunch of different kinds. Those are so,
first of all, delicious. Second of all, they actually work as far as like, I noticed the
difference. I think I got the collagen or glow ones. And I noticed the difference in my like
skin and hair and actually work excited about it. And then also, um, or I would say, what is the difference in my like skin and hair and actually work excited about it. And then also,
um, or I would say, what is it called? Ora Bora. I may be butchering that name,
that sparkling water brand. It is so subtle on the flavors, but so good. It's so like herbal
and delicious and not sweet, which is what I run into with a lot of sparkling waters is that like the,
either the fake sweetener or actual too much, but that brand is amazing. So
yum. I love that. I'll have to try those. I love anything collagen or skin, hair, nails, vitamins,
and some that I've tried have been okay. So I'll have to check those out. That's very enticing.
Yeah, absolutely.
Well, this is the end of rapid fire.
I hope that you guys all enjoyed it
because we love to answer these questions.
And we think it's just so fun to connect
with our audience a little bit more
through these questions.
So if you guys have a unique answer
to anything that we shared
or just want to like riff off of anything that we shared,
please reach out to us in our DMS. We love chatting with you. Um, it's so fun to like
hear from people who listen to the podcast that we might not know personally. It's just fun to
like develop those relationships. So please never hesitate to reach out. We love hearing from you.
And then also we wanted to kind of plug that it's almost been a year since we started a marketing happy
hour. So crazy. I know. I can't believe it's almost been a year, but we started clubhouse
in April and then launched the podcast in June. And so when we launch off season five, we will be
past a year mark, which is insane. I do know there's a stat that most podcasts do not make it to a year.
So I would say we're pretty successful with this one. Wow. Look at us go. We're trying,
we're out here doing the thing. We're interviewing millennial marketing professionals and learning
from each other. And it's actually such a great community. There's a lot that's going to be coming
in the future. If you're wondering what's next for marketing happy hour, we've got a lot
of plans in the works.
We are bringing on a team member to kind of help us with some stuff.
And, um, we're just very excited overall of what's in the future for us.
And we have some very exciting guests for next season, Cassie.
I don't know if you wanted to tease it a little bit.
Yeah. Yeah. We have,
so Angela Trotty, she works for minute media. She's an awesome copywriter. And one of my close
friends, we'll have her on, uh, Annie Atwell from June shine, hard kombucha. Her conversation was
really awesome. We'll have her on and I'm trying to think who else we have a lot of already recorded conversations that I
cannot wait for all of you to get your hands on because there's so much value packed in those
discussions. Yeah, absolutely. And there's one with Elise from Wine Enthusiast, which I was
really excited about because I had been subscribed to Wine Enthusiast for the longest time. I love learning about wine and she was such a great
conversation that I had like a week ago. So excited for you guys to hear that episode. And
then also one of my very good friends, Amy, she's a photographer. She will be on next season as well.
It'll be amazing to hear from her and to learn all about the world of photography and how marketers can
work with photographers to get the best content and how all of that comes together. So very excited.
We've got some more exciting guests as well that we can't wait to share with you.
Yes. So make sure you stay tuned on Instagram at marketing happy hour. That is at marketing happy HR.
If there's any content you want to see for season five and beyond, please let us know.
We're trying to shake it up for you guys and bring some extra value on a range of topics.
So let us know what you want to hear and keep up with us in the meantime.
And then we will be following up with you about season five and everything to expect
for the next round
of interviews. Yes. Thank you guys so much. We really, really value you listening in. And
if you are so inclined and you love marketing happy hour, please remember to rate and leave
a review. That means the world to us. If you do rate and leave a review, please feel free to send
a screenshot of that to us as well. We would love to see it. So thank you so much for listening and we'll catch you next season. Thanks guys.
