Starting point is 00:03:48 I would also add, Tommy, that I don't feel like a phony imposter anymore because I am officially now a resident of Aberdeen again. Well, I was going to say. This has been eating away at me. We actually do have a ton to talk about, Tanner. We do. Every episode we always have. Even putting up almost no commentary on the 10 things that i can think of yeah we're gonna run out of time so um we're gonna run out of a lot of things and i did just remember we
Starting point is 00:04:13 didn't even talk about the thing we said we're gonna talk about last week and i don't even think i don't know where it's gonna that's not even our schedule so that's gonna be pushed off another week here still it's gonna be old news by the time we get to that that's true yeah so tanner you are no longer homeless there's two things actually that this podcast is noteworthy for this week actually like five i keep jumping ahead of myself here but tanner's no longer homeless first podcast in our history where my hair is down and your hair is up tanner my hair there's a role reversal going on here oh yeah yeah because yours is usually do you usually have your hair up for the podcast mine's usually up for the podcast god it's looking long in that monitor right now
Starting point is 00:04:49 and did you put yours down because mine was up well it was actually um mine i so i went to the gym all right most wednesdays we're part of the noon crew you know and um uh noon crew yeah and uh this so i get home from the gym shower gotta leave my hair down so it dries out and then by the time it was like you know you just start working and it's like five o'clock and it's like oh my hair is down and i never even crossed my mind really until we started podcasting here but um so i didn't put it up today uh and mine is just now for some of the first time ever which comes in handy because i get extremely annoyed with going like tucking it all the time tucking it behind my ear constantly that's the that's the biggest hurdle to get past once you're past that one on my forehead is getting worn out for me yeah
Starting point is 00:05:40 once you're past that though it's basically like okay the sky's the limit now now we just let it ride i'm at 11 months now no haircut so that's pretty good closing in on that one year mark but yeah hair hair down for you hair up for me and i back to be an aberdeen resident like official resident a little bit of a phony on the whole pot with the whole mass dynamics podcast and at a time when people were almost like calling you out on it for like the first time ever like you know now i'm back though if someone mails us something it is coming to an aberdeen address that's going to make everyone feel a lot more comfortable i think going forward i think so yeah and i don't don't have as much of a commute for the podcast that's the big one yeah you were driving like a half hour

Actually, by the time this comes out,'s probably it's actually gonna be really interesting by the time this is playing in people's ears on monday the game stop stock could be doing some crazy stuff for people that aren't in the loop on it game stock is doing some crazy things in their stock right now and actually game stop isn't doing it people buying and selling are doing some crazy things where it's like if you had i think what was it a week ago gamestop was under ten dollars and now as of today i think that it closed at like three something 50 ish yeah yeah oh there's some money being made there and not because of
Starting point is 00:07:18 gamestop doing anything as the business like not gamestop no no factor purely uh yeah just buyers and sellers that's basically the lift short story they didn't do anything no it was just the external factors that did it all um yeah but it will be curious once this comes out in just like half of a week if it's like oh yeah game stop still on this crazy rise it's like yes we should have it's like, oh yeah, GameStop's still on this crazy rise. It's like, yes, we should have. It's now worth $5,000 a share. We really should have liquidated the Lipshort stock. We should have liquidated this company. Yeah, right, right.
Starting point is 00:07:54 Yeah, and then it would just be a GameStop holdings. Or would we have gone broke? Yeah, yeah. We'll know about that. Only time will tell. I can't wait to find out. No, me either. What was the other thing I started to talk about?
Starting point is 00:08:06 Oh, JD Power Associates. Yeah. Most importantly, probably. I've got a lot of interesting things to say about this. Okay. Okay. First of all, did you know that Power is the family? Power is their last name.
Starting point is 00:08:21 Did you know that? I will actually tell you,anner um about two weeks ago i had a creative idea and i did actually do a fairly decent amount okay jd power and associates company so i did learn some things okay um but yes go ahead tell people yes that so dave power which is i mean what a last name yeah right right day uh i think dave aka j JD Power passed away here earlier this week so as you're listening this maybe about a week ago and I don't think it was a
Starting point is 00:08:52 probably a tragic passing I don't know how old he was for exactly but I think he was in his 80s I assume he was an old right and he passed away and it was a revelation for me to realize that JD Power was a person I just thought power was power. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:07 Like that was like a creative name, naming, uh, branding for a company that gives away awards. I'm like, yeah, that's great. So when I understood that for the first time,
Starting point is 00:09:18 I'm like, Whoa, mind blown. But that's a person. Yeah. And it's his associates. Apparently I don't really know too much about the associates, but he, so he passed away uh crazy this fact is going to blow your mind and i know you don't know this
Starting point is 00:09:31 just try me this you will say that's not possible there's a member of massonomics gym that formerly i found this out formerly worked for jd power well he was an employee she was an employee screenshot yeah yeah yeah okay so i did actually tell you that then yeah but yeah that's everyone else it's cool that still is insane though yeah and she is a member of massonomics gym and she worked for jd power and her husband also a member was telling me about it he listened to the podcast listens to the podcast and he tipped me off on Dave passing away actually because he's like oh I know you guys like to talk about JD Power and Associates Awards and I never mentioned to you before but my wife actually worked there and he said great company great family they loved it and
Starting point is 00:10:23 he said they treated their employees amazing and it was just an awesome uh that's so awesome company to work for yeah he said there were some great holiday parties and that dave i think jd dave was a great guy wow yeah that that's really cool yeah and he also mentioned too how meaningful those awards were in you know some of those professional industries like how coveted those that's what actually started my research process because i saw something on tv the other day and they said jd power winner of this and i'm like wait wait wait you're allowed to have one of those things like so then i went on their website but they must have a different because a little bit
Starting point is 00:11:05 of research i did their website only talked about cars there there was no other talking of anything else right so i don't know if they have like another division or a different website somewhere that covers the other stuff but i didn't i didn't find that part but um it is surprising how many things that they actually do rate and review right and i think it said like their first time that i think it was like subaru or toyota like in the 80s like on their super bowl halftime show like said winner of like jd and that was like the first time that anyone ever used it someone ever i know yeah and then after that it was like okay like that was like everyone was like gunning to have that uh and then ford and chevy were like ha ha and che Chevy's like, we are J.D. Power and Associates.
Starting point is 00:11:46 Right. So I guess rest in power, J.D. Power. Rest in power. Very good. That's not, and we are going to continue to give things J.D. Power and Associates awards. I feel like it's what he would probably need to give out some extra. It's what he would have wanted. In memoriam this week.
Starting point is 00:12:04 Tanner, we have something very important we do need to give out some extra it's what he would have wanted in memoriam this week yes tanner we have something very important we do need to talk about and that is the hottest new website to hit the interwebs ah yes and that website is massonomicsreviews.com yes and so this is something that totally shocked and surprised us uh we knew nothing about we knew nothing about it we had a i'm gonna'm for sure going to miss someone's name. So do you know all of them? Yeah, it was, Big Nate was the ringleader. He led the charge, and then we would have Scantz, which would be Tim Scantleberry, I think is his last name.
Starting point is 00:12:38 President of Ontario. President of Ontario. One of our most faithful Canadian followers. GetFit Jen from Iowa. Then we had MostlySquatVideos, Matt, former winner of the $500 medium-sized check. And he is Massachusetts, I'm pretty sure. And then, who am I forgetting?
Starting point is 00:13:05 Swimhack. Swimhack was in there at the end too. So they made a video. And not only did they make a video, they also made a website. But we knew nothing about this. And they made a video in honor of the Masonomics Road to 300. Yes. So we're going to have a quick conversation here yeah i felt very inspired by tanner and i
Starting point is 00:13:27 already had some plans we had some rough plans in the works for the road to 300 so we knew something big was gonna happen yeah yeah and believe it or not uh on the road to 200 that was right in the heat of the middle of corona happening for the first time yeah So the billboard market was wide open. Right. Now there's a little more competition. So our plans for the road to 300 are still in place. It's just we're working against a different timeline this time. Yeah, we're logistics are, we're working out logistics right now. It's going to happen. We hate to say this, but we kind of do have to wait our turn a little bit.
Starting point is 00:14:01 Right, right, right. So it probably not going to be. We hammered out some fine finer points we had a we had a pretty good brainstorming session um and i think we have all of the uh the direction and the ideas knocked out so it yeah it shouldn't disappoint here oh no it's gonna be big but we do want to get the inside scoop on what this massonomics massonomicsreviews.com is a website that shows the current number of reviews we have, along with every time you go to the website or hit refresh, it loads up a new review. And it's very funny to see that that exists.

Starting point is 00:15:49 I can't imagine two. I'm still trying to imagine. It feels like a dream still. Nate, the reason we're calling, of course, is because of massonomicsreviews.com and the video that you put out. Could you give us the quick down and dirty version of the video that you put out could you give us the quick uh down and dirty version of the video that you guys made how that came together oh so the down and dirty on the video so i had created massonomicsreviews.com and i thought to myself i'll send this to the guys and it won't get very far because it's not that great on its own so like i have to create a trailer and uh matt and
Starting point is 00:16:25 i had been going back uh matt and known as the mostly squats matt about how we could do a video together and so that's the dream team getting together right there the two last two the last two winners it's like uh steven spielberg and uh george lucas george lucas teaming up yeah yeah so we've been going back and forth about doing a video together and uh i got this idea i was like well i could get like just a bunch of people together um we could all shoot like small little clips um and so i messaged all of them i wrote i wrote a quote-unquote script send it out and uh and i was like hey guys we're gonna we're gonna do this big and they're all like, this is amazing.
Starting point is 00:17:05 We're so excited. So we all got the clips together, edited it together. I put the trailer out on Sunday. And Swimhack messaged me and was like, hey, what the heck? Why am I not a part of this? So we got him in there last minute, which was pretty great. Yeah, I love the bit at the end where I think it's maybe one of his kids. Yes.
Starting point is 00:17:29 Nobody gives a shit. Yeah, it's so great. Yeah, that was fantastic. Well, as you can imagine, Tanner and I were both very excited. I got a message from Tanner. I think it was like five o'clock yesterday, two days ago. He's like, I just tagged you in something on Instagram. You have to look at it right now.
Starting point is 00:17:48 And when I get a message like that, I know either someone's copying something we did, something crazy. I made a, I made a curl in me. That's where I went right away. I'm like, oh, this isn't a good thing. This is something crazy is going on. But it was crazy just for a different reason than what I expected. Yeah. Yeah. Hey, a little bit of positivity. We loved it. And I thought it was very cohesive. Like, I really thought, like, I was really, really shocked at how good it was getting everyone on the same page all across North America, I guess. I know. Well, we even went to Canada.
Starting point is 00:18:24 Right. I mean, this was an international know. Well, we even went to Canada. Right. I mean, this was an international production. Yeah, to get Big Tim involved. And so like his, for example, did you write the part? Like tell him to do the thing where you're standing in front of the garage door like you usually do and then turn around? Or did he come up with that? I'm trying to remember if it was either me or Matt.
Starting point is 00:18:43 Okay. But we were just like, because we were trying to figure if it was either me or mac okay uh we were just like because we were trying to figure out like what to have everyone say right and uh he was like well jen could jen could be working on her home gym even though it's already done like yeah and the website itself is great like i i tracked it today and then the review number has gone up one or two today. I bet the website knows more than we do. I bet in large part because of the website itself.
Starting point is 00:19:12 Well, the funny part is it's not easy to get that information from iTunes. It's very tricky to pull that. They don't have an API or anything, so you have to do some fancy web scraping stuff. Okay. We can get really into some deep nitty gritty iTunes APIs. But I think we'll, we'll save that for the next podcast. We'll save that for ATP.
Starting point is 00:19:31 So, so do you, uh, work on that stuff as, uh, in a professional capacity or is that just a hobby of yours? Uh, I work as somewhat of a programmer of sorts, I guess you could say. Okay. I'm bored with those details. He wants to talk about that. Okay well that's good though you put it in it a link to the shop so people can buy shorts while they're there well i mean naturally that's required right yeah right yeah i mean if people can't buy stuff what's the point of this right right exactly i mean it's all to make money guys i mean my when i told my wife i was starting to work on this and she said, Nathan, you need to stop doing free stuff for that. I was like, I want a barbell. Oh, okay. Great point. So that does. Okay. So yeah, we are, we are, we're incredibly grateful and we're very excited to see that. So
Starting point is 00:20:18 thank you guys for doing that video, but we do have a couple, a couple of quick follow-up questions now. Yeah. How was the barbell? Oh, it's fantastic. I mean, it was great to hold. Would you say strong as a house? Oh, best. Best knurling? Yes, absolutely. I mean... Has it been maintenance-free so far?
Starting point is 00:20:39 Oh, I've done zero maintenance. There's chalk all over it that I need to clean up. No, I'm sorry you can't. It has to stay 100% maintenance free. I can do that, absolutely. No maintenance allowed on the Texas Power Bar. I feel like I've also broken a few of the Nathan Eckberg gym of really small muscles records as well. Yes, awesome.

It'll be a great time. I don't believe that you're joking when you say you're considering taking the barbell with you. So, you know, that would not surprise me. Originally when I did the lift hard, live easy video, I, my original plan was to deadlift inside the Applebee's. But I, but I was afraid to ask anyone if I could carry plates into the store. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:30 Was that the actual waiter that you got on board in the video in that, in your video too? Like, okay. So I, I apparently I knew the guy I did was looking all over trying to get connections. And I found out I knew a guy that worked at Applebee's.
Starting point is 00:22:44 So I was like, sweet. This is way better than just asking some random Applebee's server to be in my video. Well, you do a great job. Actually, everyone that you included does a great job in all the videos that they put out. We love those. It's awesome to see those. How did you first come across Mastonomics? I think it was a Garage Gym Reviews
Starting point is 00:23:05 video. I think it was the one where he was walking through your gym and I was like, oh, I love podcasts. I should check out their podcast. And I found it and I was like, this is the best podcast. So I've kept with it ever since. Amazing. We really appreciate

Starting point is 00:25:30 wife saw these in the fridge and was very curious why there was a white piece of paper that had two on it i told her she could not look because it's a secret i couldn't know she doesn't like surprises or secrets so she had to look and see what it was and she said oh okay and then put the tape back on so she knows what it is i do not sweet and this is from the former president of ontario i believe mr hendrix not jimmy do you think kyle and jimmy related i would assume well i'm not gonna that's not a fruity scent that's a i'm almost getting like a caramel smell or like vanilla. I'm getting a caramel vanilla flavor. Maybe it's because you said that, but it's not fruit.
Starting point is 00:26:12 No vanilla. I think vanilla has to be one of the flavors. But the last one was cherry vanilla, wasn't it? Maybe that's what it was. It was good. Or is it butterscotch? Yeah, I think that's in the right ballpark i think it's butterscotchy but is there raspberry in there is there a fruit hiding in there um is there a cucumber in there
Starting point is 00:26:36 tanner and this is certainly a uh zero calorie sparkling water i think right you know this is a no sugar this is a pretty traditional sparkling water, I think, right? You know, this is a no sugar. This is a pretty traditional sparkling water, I believe. I can't quite put my finger on that. I want to say one of those flavors we named has to be right. I'm going to say it's... Doesn't it? Yeah, I'm going to go... If I got to just pick one, I'm going to say vanilla has to be in there.
Starting point is 00:27:01 And the moment of truth. Who does number two really work for? Who does number two? Oh,? Who does number two work? Oh, duh. I've only seen the French one. I can't see the English one. Now that I see it, I'm like... Cream soda.
Starting point is 00:27:11 God, yeah. Okay, that's true. Now that I see that, that's definitely what it is. It's just I wasn't... I haven't had a cream soda in so long. That's exactly what it tastes like, though. Yep, it 100% does.
Starting point is 00:27:23 Yeah. To me, that is cream soda. It's like, is it vanilla? Is it butterscotch? Is it something else? And this is the President's Choice again. Good flavor, though, too. Yeah, it is good.
Starting point is 00:27:33 I like the President's Choice beverages. Really weird color. Pink for cream soda? Shouldn't it be tan? I usually think that the color of the can should match the flavor inside it. I think this is the same color as the last can, isn't it? I think it might be, or either the other one was more red. Maybe this is exactly the same.

Starting point is 00:29:01 bowl picks in too ah that's true this week we do have because the super bowl is not this saturday but the next one so it'll be we do have the week this comes out is the week of super bowl and sunday do you i'm a buccaneers fan i was actually gonna say i mean i'm not an avid nfl follower these days i was gonna i was going to tell you you know tanner i remember you saying you're a buccaneers, and I haven't heard you say a single thing yet. And I actually started watching the games over the playoff run here. I was like, the Bucs are in the playoffs. Like, they got Tom Brady. You could probably go back to a podcast, and I probably said something.
Starting point is 00:29:37 I never thought I would cheer for Tom Brady. And I'm kind of cheering for Tom Brady now, just because it's becoming such an anomaly. And this certainly isn't a sports show that we do here, but I just had, you know, these things float around these infographics with all these facts and stuff. And some of these on Tom Brady now have just gotten ridiculous. Honestly, they're ridiculous.
Starting point is 00:29:56 Like you read it and you can't help but think that doesn't make sense. That can't be right. If that was in a movie, you'd be like, well, they were just really lazy when they wrote that character. Right, right. Yes. Okay. So let me just go lazy when they were at that character. Right. Right. Yes. Okay. So let me just go through this particular graphic one that I came across the, at least
Starting point is 00:30:09 the interesting ones has appeared in more Super Bowl Super Bowls now 10 than every team in the NFL besides the Patriots, which is 11 essentially. Right. Yeah. Yeah. But if he could go to one more with not the Patriots, he would tie them, you know? Yep. First quarterback to play in a Superbowl in three different decades,
Starting point is 00:30:30 2000s, 2010s, 2020s. Three decades. Yeah. Crazy. Four Superbowl in five seasons, including his third since turning 40.
Starting point is 00:30:40 No other QB has started a Superbowl in his forties. And he's now on his third um as many super bowl starts in his 40s as rogers merino and breeze combined in their entire careers wow um this super bowl will be brady's 45th postseason game which which is more than 21 NFL franchises. Yeah, I saw that one. 45th postseason game. That's nuts. These are all wild. This one really stuck out as wild to me.
Starting point is 00:31:12 In 19 seasons as a starting QB, Brady has now made the Super Bowl 10 times. He's missed it nine and made it 10. Two of the Super Bowl. You're shooting over 50%. These amazing players out there that go their whole career and don't make it to the super bowl you're you're shooting over 50 these amazing players out there that go their whole career and don't make it don't even make it to a conference yeah right right just just uh just shocking stuff and like i said this is by no means a um sports you
Starting point is 00:31:39 know we don't we don't talk sports a lot on here but just what i saw the other day was like tom brady now has the same number of NFC championships as Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers. And it's like, yeah, that is also really stupid, too. Right, right. Yeah. And granted, there is, especially in the NFL, there's a lot more to a team than one player or even the quarterback.
Starting point is 00:32:00 Oh, yeah. But at this point in time, you say, but is there? Like, how many time can the odds like be right right and and and to be a road also to be a road team through three games in the playoffs and then get to be a home team for the Super Bowl first ever home team yeah yeah okay that's that is cool that's crazy yeah first ever and like I said I'm a Bucs fan but I don't think this this isn't coming from a place of bias because I'm not a super Tom Brady fan prior to this
Starting point is 00:32:27 but like it's not arguable anymore right like who the best quarterback of all time I don't know how you could can you say those things and like like is it arguable anymore like I know this was a debate like five years ago but at this point like I don't know how you could
Starting point is 00:32:42 in the modern age of NFL even if they go even if they go and just get destroyed in the super bowl i still don't i still don't think you can say it was a fluke thing no i mean you can't it doesn't matter if they lost i don't think it matters if they lose by 40 you're like he made it to 10 in the modern era of the nfl where parity should be extremely like not possible right for sustained periods of time. Yes. So, I mean, yeah, I think, like, I don't see how someone argues that anymore, but there's probably people out there that follow it closely.
Starting point is 00:33:15 Oh, yeah, there are just people that are very, yeah. So, then it comes down to, you know, what everyone waits for all year is the Masonomics Super Bowl picks. I got to go Buccaneers. This is, of course, my, I think the buccaneers are gonna win um i think it's gonna be a close game i think brady's gonna do a game winning drive i that's what i'll go with i want i want i want the buccaneers doing i was actually hoping actually hoping for a Bucs-Buffalo Super Bowl. I was hoping for the Bills, too. I thought that would have been pretty cool.
Starting point is 00:33:47 I want the Bucs to win, but I have a feeling the Chiefs are going to win. So that's the best spot to be in, Tanner. That's a win-win right there. That's true. You cannot lose. That's a fun Super Bowl to watch. As long as no one gets blown out. I mean, if they get blown out, whatever.
Starting point is 00:34:02 I'm going to go Chiefs, but I hope the Bucs win. I'm still curious to see if that Masonomic Super Bowl commercial is going to be on like we've been hoping. Starting point is 00:39:56 I put on some really well-scented sandalwood and vanilla beard oil before I got on. Oh. Just because I wanted you to feel my warmth through my scent, you know? I thought I could. You know what they say about you, don't they? Or don't you, JP? Yeah, yeah. I mean, I'm the best smelling heavyweight in the world, and I'm never going to get rid of that title.
Starting point is 00:40:12 That's right. No matter what, nobody can take that away from you. I'm going to get down to 300 pounds here shortly. Oh, no. I'm going to stay at 308. And once a year, I'll go to 309 so I can keep that title. Yeah, that would be the risk. Because really, the best smelling 308 in the world, no.
Starting point is 00:40:35 And it's also just not as prestigious. It's like, well, yeah, you're getting skinny. It's easy to smell good when you're thin. That's the challenge, I think. smell good when you're like when you're thin you know that's kind of the that's the challenge i think that's my move because people don't realize uh the competition and the weight classes uh is different from class to class based on the average size of the average human right right and uh so there's not very many big guys now there's a lot of heavyweights overall and the usapl has heavyweights etc but not everybody has a 308 class so there's a lot of heavyweights overall, and the USAPL has heavyweights, etc.
Starting point is 00:41:10 But not everybody has a 308 class, so there's really not that many 308 pounders. And that's been my strategy that nobody knows about is I'm going to come back and I'm going to be a 308 where it's not nearly as competitive. There you go. Clean up. I like that strategy. But don't forget, though. But 308 is master now. There are no weight classes in the jungle jungle though. That is something you got to remember. We live in the prairie guys.
Starting point is 00:41:32 True. There are weight classes in western northeast South Dakota. Yeah, exactly. I think the last time we got to talk to you face to face or that we caught up in a manner like this was that the arnold and what year of the arnold would that have been to tommy do you remember what it been like
Starting point is 00:41:50 2018 2018 yeah because 2020 didn't happen 2019 we had a booth so yeah 2018 okay so a lot's changed for you in that amount of time correct yeah yeah a ton has changed for me like at the time that we talked to you you had just squatted in the cage with uh you and rob quads like rob rob philippus had squatted together and i i think i don't know if it was you had just recently done the u.s open or that was shortly after that i know it was around that time frame where you put that was to the US Open so Rob Rob and I were both in meat prep for the US Open and that was just what we were going to do that week in training you know and uh so we were squatting 925 for doubles right that's okay now I yes that's right that and then how many how many pounds less do you weigh now than what you did what would have weighed at
Starting point is 00:42:50 that point in time because you've gone through a pretty drastic transformation so at one point in time during that meat prep i stepped on my scale and it said error and that scale goes up to 400 pounds and it's calibrated okay okay um so i think i was probably like 405 or 403 because i weighed in like the next week or two weeks later at 396 okay and i wasn't i wasn't healthy i was in bad shape and uh i was already deep, deep into back pain at that point and hip pain. And, uh, and, uh, I just really was getting bigger, but not better. And my bench was going great because that happens when my deadlift was, you know, shitting the bed at that weight. My squat was strong, but as my back started to deteriorate,
Starting point is 00:43:40 I started to lose my ability to grind and the, you know, second third of the, of the motion. And, uh, so I just got to a point where, you know, I was, I was way too big and, and I had to, I had to lose some weight. My best was when I was probably 365 to 370. That's when I had my best meets. And so what are you actually weighing about right now? and so what are you actually weighing about right now i've been down as low as 303 but uh i'm at 320 right now like 319 okay and i would assume you're just feeling significantly better then oh yeah yeah in may i got my first like really positive uh blood work without you know i had taken like a little lisinopril for blood pressure as I,
Starting point is 00:44:26 you know, you get to 400 pounds, it's not good for your body. And so I had a good blood pressure reading and that really, really felt good because I've worked really hard at this and, and I've been injured the whole time and I haven't really been able to move much. I've had to control my weight with my diet only., which is how it should be. You shouldn't really count on exercise to lose weight. That's not a very good strategy as far as mathematics are concerned. And so I feel really good. I do want to get down to 300 pounds. I still have some unwanted body fat and I still will at that point too, but I'll feel pretty damn good. And the challenge I have right now for the past two and a half years,
Starting point is 00:45:08 I've been hurt pretty bad and I've been not able to do anything hardly, or it's been a version of it. It's not that much fun or I've been seriously, you know, limited in what I could do. Right. Ever since that us open. And I deteriorated pretty quickly. And within three months after the meet, I couldn't squat at all hardly. Like I was down to like five plates and then, you know, just started, everything started to hurt where I was down to three plates and the safety squat bar for less hip flexion. And it just got worse and worse. And then I entered into doctor's care for
Starting point is 00:45:42 a year and had surgery that I didn't need. And that really spiraled. I had injections I didn't need. I had nerve ablations where they cut your nerves with the laser that I didn't need. And then I got really desperate. And Aaron from Squat University, who was a local physical therapist here in Kansas City, now he lives in St. Louis. And so he was actually my physical therapist after surgery that was prescribed to me. You know, I picked him out, but still. And so then he got me in touch with Stuart McGill. And then I went and stayed with Stuart McGill for a few days and he had diagnosed my back. And that was in October to November of 2019. And he made me rest for a long time.
Starting point is 00:46:26 And that's when I really started kicking into high gear on the weight loss. And, you know, I used to drink way more than I should. And now I can just enjoy it really, really casually. And I kicked that and, you know, stopped drinking so much and just started paying more attention. And I've yo-yoed a bit, but I've been pretty consistently getting better at controlling my food and being good at monitoring that, working with people that really helped me do that well in a healthy way, mentally and physically. And so I was with Stuart McGill and really not doing much. And then we went into COVID in 2020, in April and March, and I started getting really, really stir crazy as most of the world probably did.
Starting point is 00:47:09 And just going through a lot with the gym and that and developing our business and being a young business that's being shut down and going through all that stuff was really stressful. And during that time, my really good friend, John Heck, came out here because his dad is the offensive line coach for the Chiefs. Oh, I didn't know that. I didn really good friend, John Heck, um, came out here cause his dad is the offensive line coach for the chiefs. Oh, I didn't know that. No. Yeah. He's the offensive line coach for the super bowl champion chiefs. Right. And, uh, his brother, um, actually got drafted and he
Starting point is 00:47:39 plays as the backup left tackle for the Houston Texans as a rookie now. So how big is his brother is? So John Heck, if you're familiar with John, who's going to be a really elite level, a backup left tackle for the Houston Texans as a rookie now. So how big is his brother? So John Heck, if you're familiar with John, who's going to be a really elite level strong man one day, he already is. So John is a mutant. I mean, John's six foot seven or eight and has abs and he's 310 pounds, you know? And John's trajectory and his genetic potential he's still young he's still in his mid-20s you know wait wait a second you said john is six seven three ten yeah and has abs wait so not john hack the power lifter no no john heck oh i thought you were saying john
Starting point is 00:48:21 i did too okay whoa i did not know this. Okay, John Hack. Now this is making a lot more sense. You were just blowing my mind there for a while, and I was like, what is going on? Okay. So John Hack. Okay. Yeah, so John Hack is the strength coach at North Carolina, University of North Carolina. Okay.
Starting point is 00:48:40 And a really just mutant-sized strongman. And then his dad's the line coach for the Chiefs. And then his brother plays for the Houston Texans now as a rookie. That all makes a lot of sense, yeah. And they're just giants. So anyway, they came to town because the world shut down and his brother's trying to get drafted into the NFL. And so I met with John and I started losing weight again with john and he did a really great
Starting point is 00:49:06 job with me and and i started really getting a great idea of how i need to and want to do this and what i feel good with and and uh and so i've been hovering around uh 305 to 320 to 30 pounds for quite a while and as my i got hooked up with and Andrew Locke out of Australia, who's a physiotherapist there. And Dr. Andrew Locke, he, I just, he's brilliant. Uh, Ryan Silva, one of my training partners and trainers at my gym, uh, reached out to him and I knew Andrew did really phenomenal stuff with people's shoulders, but I just didn't know how good at this he was. And, uh, you're going to hear his name a million times in the coming years. Um, he, uh, his philosophy on things is do everything that you possibly can and the things that you can't do, figure out how you can do those too. And then during that process, get better and, uh,
Starting point is 00:49:58 and get your body healed and, uh, figure out how to work. And that was a lot more what i needed when i was going stir crazy and so i wasn't even allowed to do floor press but i did it anyway because i was really really going nuts you know yeah and so i would want to like incline bench but it would hurt my back because i was sitting in extension with my lumbar spine, right? And I'm very extension intolerant with my back. And so Dr. Locke was like, hey, just put a hip circle on and flex your glutes. And all of a sudden I could incline press without pain day one. So after a few weeks of that, he was like, yeah, you can bench with your feet on the floor. And I said, okay. And I entered a meet and it got canceled anyway, but I entered a meet and I weighed 30 308 i was going to bench press in a meet
Starting point is 00:50:48 right away and uh so uh he just gave me really really good new hope and we went from july till now squatting and deadlifting zero pounds to 628 on both. And, uh, and as I've kind of learned more about me and how much I have to do my physical therapy that he prescribes and all that jazz. And I've realized that it's for life for me. I don't ever get to take a break, you know, like if you hurt your shoulder, the physical therapist gets you back to a hundred percent range of motion. And then they set you free and you just have to go get your strength back. Right right and you never do physical therapy again like you may have some drills that you like to do to make you feel good but you never have to do that anymore the injury heals and you move on and the injury i have you just don't ever heal from and move on you have to keep at it
Starting point is 00:51:38 forever the spondy and the and the stenosis and the herniated discs and the, uh, and the, the, uh, arthritis, that stuff never goes away. You just have to learn how to control it better and how to support it and how to support your spine. And that's what he taught me. And, uh, and that's why I've seen some progress. But as I made that progress and my strength went up and I stopped paying so much attention to my diet, I just get overwhelmed with everything we go through with work and, you know, the injuries and the diet and everything and, you know, and being a dad and stuff and, and coaching people and running the gym. And, and so, uh, sometimes, you know, my diet falls back off because it's something I'm not naturally good at. So I don't gravitate towards being good at it, you know, and put all the effort that I can into it when I need to. And so my weight started to fluctuate back up and I had to get it back under control.
Starting point is 00:52:34 Because now my thought is going forward to wrap up this really long explanation to give you guys a good timeline since the last time we were together. to give you guys a good timeline since the last time we were together. Um, me and, uh, some of the old guys at the gym, I've got a gym full of cool young people and old guys that have been great, you know, and you know,
Starting point is 00:52:53 they're good at single plan, multi-plan raw and wraps. And it's a really fun group to be a part of. And, uh, we're all kind of looking at maybe doing a meet at the end of the year in November. And, uh, so the way I look at it is I've got about a month to get down to weight and then learn how to maintain that and be an athlete for the first time in my life.
Starting point is 00:53:13 And I've also had to relearn how to do all the lifts in a different style than I did them before. And now I've got, you know, one month to get down to weight and then I've got 10 months, you know, or nine months to get my strength to whatever level i can get it to safely you know so that's where i'm at so you have done a couple things since last time we talked yeah a little bit and uh i've had a gym where when i was talking to you guys last time i didn't own the gym i just worked for somebody and i didn't really want to own it at the time. I just wanted to, you know, have the ability to kind of think out my dream a little bit. And I ended up just getting to kind of have a test drive, you know,
Starting point is 00:53:55 and I couldn't really work for somebody else to do the things that I wanted to do and to execute the dreams that I had, you know? to do the things that I wanted to do and to execute the dreams that I had, you know? And, uh, so I met somebody at that gym who's a really amazing weightlifter named Ethan Herrick. He's a American champion weightlifter.
Starting point is 00:54:13 And, uh, he's just great at everything that I'm not great at. And he's really great at the back end of the business and the money and, and keeping organized and making sure that we're going to do this for a long time, you know. And I'm really good at the outreach and the bringing people in and running events and things like that. And so I run the gym day to day. And so we had that dream and we broke off the other gym and started our own a year and a half ago.
Starting point is 00:54:40 And so now we fully own the Name Strong Barbell Club and it's ours. And, you know, it's been really, really incredible. We have about 200 gym members and a 6,000 square foot gym in Kansas City. And it's just been quite a trip, man, especially right now. Yeah, that's got to be really rewarding seeing that. I mean, taking ownership of that and seeing it grow and become your own. Yeah, it's a wild time to try to grow a gym, but we've been a little bit stagnant since maybe June or so. I mean, people have just had such interesting situations and things aren't normal and people don't feel normal and money is not normal. And so the fact that we were able to grow the business and be profitable through all this is kind of incredible. But, you know, we don't really take a profit on the gym right now.
Starting point is 00:55:33 We'd love to be able to and we're going to be able to. But we've just used this time as a time to grow. And we've renovated two or three times since we opened. And we did an office and lounge and full bathroom renovation while we were closed for COVID. And we were only closed a month or so. And, you know, we've just used it as a time to expand. Like, at the end of the year, we bought seven new pieces of equipment, plus they get delivered next week and the week after. And we also bought new dumbbells
Starting point is 00:56:05 up to 150s because we've got a lot of old stuff you know we're a gym that we had to piece together at the last minute and we bought another gym's equipment and they had some really amazing stuff and some stuff that's 20 or 30 years old you know and it gave us the opportunity to start a gym fast and give people what they needed and now we're trying to take that and then make it as incredible as possible. We want to be the best type of gym. We want to be the best of our type of gym, you know, and there's some great examples out there like Indy City Barbell and Seabus Lifting Company. And that's just to name a couple. I mean, there's some really phenomenal gyms here in the Midwest and on the coast and in all the big cities.
Starting point is 00:56:45 And, and it's just cool to be a part of that. And it's cool to try to be the best at it. You know, that's what we really want to be. And this year, do you, am I right that you guys hosted the showdown meet kind of on short notice too? Yeah, it was a little wild and I kind of, I kind of stay in the back of that a little bit. I'm involved in a handful of federations and, you know, I, I don't really get into the federation politics.
Starting point is 00:57:11 Like, I think that if that starts to be an issue with me, then, uh, you know, I'll kind of go rogue, but, uh, I, uh, I think that if I want to be the best gym, then I have to be able to facilitate, you know, every variation of what we do at the best level, you know? And so it's really important for me to be involved in the USPA. It's really important for me to be involved in the USAPL. And it's really important for me to be involved in the WRPF because those represent the biggest populations of lifters in the community, right? because those represent the biggest populations of lifters in the community, right? And, you know, there's other federations out there. And honestly, what would be best for the sport if there were far less federations, you know?
Starting point is 00:58:04 There's no reason that me and Josh Morris and Brandon Allen and all those people shouldn't have been on the same platform at the same time because we were all in one federation you know yeah and that's the most frustrating thing about the sport is there's no one place where we all go to do the same thing together and that makes it so that it's really hard to uh to unify the sport and to feel good about the records and to feel good about the competition you see every year um because the rules aren't enforced the same for everybody because of so many different variations. And so when we got an opportunity to be involved in the showdown, this is kind of how it happened. When the showdown was first established and Luke Bright from Eat Right Foods got involved to put it together, he's an incredible promoter and he really loves the sport and he's giving more to the sport than than very few people you know um russ kern is the next example you know and uh so he gives
Starting point is 00:58:54 so much time and effort and money and resources to power lifting and power lifters and he's worked so hard to get people involved to sponsor which which is pulling teeth in this sport, you know. And for some people, you know, there's some really incredible companies. And then it's just hard to get a lot of people involved sometimes because there's so many, so many chiefs, you know. And so what had happened was it's supposed to be in Buffalo, New York. And Hunter Henderson and Kay Proctor from our gym are going to be in the meet and they were, you know, looking to do a great job. And, uh, Hunter especially was looking at setting, you know, some world records and the U S open had gotten canceled. They got moved and then canceled. And, uh, they were both prepping for that too, you know, and, uh, we were just hoping that something would go right. You know,
Starting point is 00:59:46 it's been a tough year. And, uh, in July we had heard about a, uh, two week quarantine for anybody that went to, uh, um, New York. And the thing about COVID is it's super dangerous, you know, I know, and, and it's all over the place. And I had it last month and, you know, I was not too affected at all. You know, I felt sick for a day. And the thing is, New York is a really, really tough place to host an event right now. You know, the population is far more dense than it is in the Midwest. And I was just really confident that we could bring that event to Kansas City and do a good job. And I think we have some of the best meets in the that event to Kansas City and do a good job. And I think we
Starting point is 01:00:25 have some of the best meets in the world here in Kansas City. And we've worked really hard at it for seven or eight years and hosted 40 meets or so as a crew. And so we're really, really confident in our ability to judge meets, to host meets, and to have great equipment and great spotters and loaders and a great community to support it, you know. And so I was really confident that we could bring it here and do a good job helping them. And I was very careful to, you know, stay in my role and not, you know, cross federation lines and just do my job as a gym owner to promote the sport and to build the meetup and to provide equipment and volunteers. equipment and, uh, and volunteers. And so, uh, the space that we use to host our meets that our gym hosts is 24,000 square feet. So the rules in Kansas city, Missouri is that you could, uh,
Starting point is 01:01:16 do that at a gym, but you had to have half capacity and half capacity in that space is 177 people. And so we set the number of competitors and the number of spectators and the number of helpers to match 10% less than that number. And we created a plan with the city because somebody called and arced on us. And we made sure that we could host the event and make sure the lifters could have that meet this year and that, you know, the year wasn't wasted on their training cycles and all the work they put in. And the experience that people had and the experience that the meet had and only our first attempt to ever host a big meet like that. What the energy of it was so positive and felt so good that that that we had to do it again in a bigger better fashion this year hopefully oh so is that the plan 2021 we'll be back there in kansas yeah it's back here and uh it's uh it's looking really really salty man we sent out the first 100 invites
Starting point is 01:02:19 to the top 100 lifters and dot scores and weight classes and and uh we got 40 right off the bat of the top 100 yeah that'll be a good roster so do you think the showdown meet is the premier is the premier meet going forward then well i think that uh the u.s open has proved to be the premier meeting reps and uh and i hope that we can be the premier meat and sleeves. And, uh, and so the judging I thought was really, really good and fair. I don't think anybody took any records that anybody is going to argue about whatsoever. Um, the way that I lifted in my career was in a way where I didn't want to have anybody ever second guessed my ability to know the rules and execute them on the platform.
Starting point is 01:03:15 And I always told people, I said, your haters are three white lights away from shutting up if you do the lift right, you know, under good judging. And it's really, really easy, I think, in my opinion, to show people your mastery of the lifts if you just hit depths. And so that was the first most important thing to me was to have good consistent judging. And a couple lifters bombed, either on squats or deadlifts. And every single one of them was so cool about it because they were happy that we had good enforcement. Some people got red lights and then had to sync their lifts and they showed themselves that they can do things to standard. You know, there were people, we had a group chat and we talked about that every single week and we would grill each other on, on their training videos. And, and, um, you know, we just, we let the expectation be known that like, Hey, we're just going to call it by the
Starting point is 01:03:58 rules and it's not going to be too strict and it's not going to be too lax. And I'm going to try to get judges that have no pulse and could give a shit who you are, you know? And, uh, cause I don't know how many times, and I don't mean to say this in any kind of cocky way, but I'd be squatting 900 some pounds and the judge would be off their seat on their feet getting excited. And I'm like, no, no, no, no, I won't sit down and shut up, you know? Yeah. You want an official, not a fan. Exactly. And I'm, I'm a judge too. You want an official, not a fan. Exactly. And I'm, I'm a judge too. I'm a, I'm a national level judge for the USPA.
Starting point is 01:04:28 And, uh, that's something I take really, really seriously. And in this sport, I've said this over and over that if you're willing to bitch about something, you also should be willing to get your skin in the game and fix whatever you don't like. And if you don't, then you can keep quiet. Yep. I think that's fair. That's a very fair point.
Starting point is 01:04:46 So after what we've talked about in the last 25 minutes, I mean, I've gotten involved because I want to have the ability to affect the sport in a positive way. And the people that we have here in Kansas City have just done that for seven years. And they mentored me, and then I get to mentor other people now. Well, that's cool for sure i think you're it sounds like you're probably doing a really good thing for the sport do you think it'll ever get to a point where there are less federations where it is more
Starting point is 01:05:16 unified or will it kind of be on this track for uh at least a certain amount of time buddy i have very little faith in us right now and uh the only buddy i have very little faith in us right now and uh the only reason i have that little faith in us is because man we've got federations that you know support pedophilia you know uh you know we've got federations that have have never called a squat bad you know and people keep on giving them their money and they keep on supporting them you know we have a great state here in missouri, and man, there's a USPC meet here coming up and, uh, and there's a state chair and, uh, and I've called them out and told them that I don't think it's welcome here. You know, that we already have good feds and good meats and good people
Starting point is 01:05:59 running them. And, uh, we don't need somebody trying to come in here and undercut and steal people's business because they can't get along with everybody else. And I think that's a problem here. You know, I think it's a big, big problem. There's plenty of football players that don't like some things about the NFL, but they're still playing it. They still are part of the machine and the best show on turf and the only true championship in football, you know. And we need that in this sport. and that's why it's a joke. Yeah, I pretty much agree.
Starting point is 01:06:30 I think we were coming from a place where we pretty much agree with that, where it would be something to see if there ever is a way to get it to a point where it is. And I think most sensible people would agree with that. It's just all of these people that have their particular way of doing things and want their trophy that we get this situation we have yeah i mean and look at strongman all it took to divide that sport was one relationship not working out right right you know and and that's and that's tough because you know in that sport gosh i would really love it if it was a little bit more simple. In this region, there's a lot of USS.
Starting point is 01:07:09 In that region, there's a lot of Strongman Corp. Man, that just makes things difficult, doesn't it? Yeah. At least they're coming from the standpoint of there's just two. It's like, oh, this is just either this one or that one. And that's the crazy thing is there's no regulations in that sport, and there's only two feds. Right they have no rules yeah yeah uh jp we play this game every week with every guest that's called overrated underrated i don't know if you're familiar with it at all but we've got a special set of overrated underrated topics for you that we'd like to go through and uh you can answer, take as long as you want to answer
Starting point is 01:07:47 or answer as quickly as you want to, but you do have to come up with an answer of either overrated or underrated. You can't ride the line in between. Okay. Should all make sense. So to get to our special JP Price topics. Okay, so we know you're a man that likes music. Um,
Starting point is 01:08:08 you're also own a gym. So you've experienced a lot of music, a lot of fine music around the gym, of course. Uh, and when I say like you, you like music, I myself am not a music expert,
Starting point is 01:08:20 probably particularly not in your genre, but I just know from a you listen to a lot of like shine down then well so just wait so so topic number one overrated or underrated disturbed overrated and what would you say about disturbed i would say that if a bird can that's probably not that good yes no I uh here's my thing is whenever bands are cool and then they make a
Starting point is 01:08:53 ballad they suck for example stained if anybody would like to go back and listen to stains first album it was great everything Everything since then sucks. So what was their ballad that they went to that brought the downfall? Gosh, I don't know the name of it right now. I'm only upset.
Starting point is 01:09:18 Oh, okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I can see. Yeah, yeah. I can't think of what that song's called. No, okay. that's cool that makes sense so disturbed definitely overrated i thought you might go that way on that one you know yeah they're overrated i'm not into a whole lot of stadium rock but um sure there's a couple songs when you turn them on it's like the fifth element the movie you just don't turn it off yeah the novelties there yeah yeah okay overrated or underrated reddit uh underrated are you are you active on
Starting point is 01:09:56 the reddit i think i'm the world's strongest redditor um oh i used to be more involved in reddit i'm just too busy to read that much now. And, uh, every once in a while I'll go on there and like flame a couple of people or say something nice. Um, the best Reddit experience I ever had was one night I was like, uh, having some drinks at home by myself and it was like Friday and some kid hopped on Reddit and he was, I think it was like 19 or 20. I don't even know his name.
Starting point is 01:10:24 I don't remember who it was. And he was like, hey, my coach bailed on me, and I got a meet tomorrow. And I was like, hey, give me a call. And I had him call me. And this was a couple years ago. I had him call me, and I coached him through his meet. That's a good meet hookup the night before. Pretty clutch.
Starting point is 01:10:44 Yeah, he fucking went like nine for nine it was great um i had him like send me videos and shit you know i was like really into it um but uh dave osborne i met through reddit and that alone makes reddit um underrated are you heavy on the power lifting subreddit then is that where you would spend a lot of your time or i never went anywhere besides there because there's two other places yeah yep it's a big world yeah overrated or underrated the kansas city chiefs oh uh well i mean they're getting a lot of run right now so i don't think that you can really say they're underrated at the moment but um you know i think that they get a whole lot of love and they deserve it all um yeah i think that uh i mean i guess you could say maybe they're underrated but yeah you can't i don't think you can say they're overrated they're pretty damn good right now
Starting point is 01:11:39 right how about if the question was mahomes would you kind of have the similar answer yeah i mean i think he is the Chiefs right now, and they have some really great cast alongside him, of course, but he's the one that you can't plug and play, kind of like you feel with Tom Brady. He seems to be a really, really excellent human. I've always said this as a Chiefs and Royals fan. Those two teams, unless you're like a divisional rival, like I don't think anybody in the world really hates you very much.
Starting point is 01:12:09 And it feels kind of good. Yeah. It's just fun to see small market teams, like to see not Boston and LA, like championships for once, you know, like it's like cool to like think that a kid at a school in New York might wear a Kansas city Jersey now,
Starting point is 01:12:24 you know? Yeah. Right. Right. That's true. to like think that a kid at a school in new york might wear a kansas city jersey now you know yeah right right that's true i just hope we get some d linemen because we kind of the royals like wheel and deal pitchers and the chiefs wheel and deal dns that go somewhere and make 30 sacks um but like we draft all these amazing dns and then they're all gone tom bahaly and jared allen and yeah uh neil smithy you know like um and like all these guys they come here and then they're gone and and uh we need to keep some healthy dns for a really long time yeah well we'll see if that we'll see if they make it the second back the repeat then here coming up soon probably well like what did we say so this comes
Starting point is 01:13:03 out before the game then yeah this is about a monday so yeah right yeah okay and the access to the players in kansas city is great like if you really want to like i have some friends who are friends with some players and you know like known from being at the nightclub or this or that and it's like just great experiences overall typically like you know you might know like the guy that works at the dentist office where pat mahomes and his girlfriend go or fiance or whatever and uh like there's the access to them feels super good and they feel super um a part of our community in a lot of ways and and i think that they like that too and so uh you know that that's why it kind of breaks your heart the culture of modern uh professional sports where people don't stay very long.
Starting point is 01:13:47 Because this is the kind of place where people really grow to love their athletes. And like George Brett, that's what we grew up with. It's one of those things where we really want to love our hometown heroes. So you just hope they stay around a long time. Yeah. Do you ever see Andy Reed around? I wish I did. Like, I think everybody be like, Andy is like pretty Kansas city, right? You know, like when you think of like a coach that would be here, like he makes a lot of sense. That does seem really true. Yeah. And he like that jockstrap face mask. looks lovely okay so last topic then we
Starting point is 01:14:28 know you're from kansas city now we know barbecue is big in kansas city we talked about brisket with who did we talk about brisket with matt pioneer uh yeah matt uh in for pioneer down in texas so for you today overrated underrated buffalo, Buffalo wings, probably overrated overall. The, the, the wing itself. I mean, there's not a lot of places where you're like that wing was solid, you know? And I think that I want to get a subcategory here of overrated or underrated from you guys.
Starting point is 01:15:04 Dry rub wings. I Dry rubbed wings. I like dry rubbed wings. I like dry rubbed ribs a lot, and I also kind of like dry rubbed wings. But I know that's not that common. I don't mind them, but I think they're overrated. I want flavor, and I want that moisture on my wings. That's what I want. What do you fall?
Starting point is 01:15:22 I recently was with Matt Vincent, and we ordered like 20 wings a piece and uh i got 10 dry 10 wet so that's where i fall i'm kind of down the middle okay i actually like what you said though because what i like when i'm eating my wings is a little variety i like to go back and forth i don't want 20 of the identical wing i'm 100 on that 20 the to go back and forth i don't want 20 of the identical wing i'm 100 on that 20 the same wing no way like i want if i can't if 20 if i can split 24 ways that that's perfect i agree i went four ways i went like cajun lemon pepper asian zing and like caribbean jerk yeah and yeah so so here's the thing though so i was telling somebody this
Starting point is 01:16:06 the other day when they ask about kansas city barbecue like that's our food and when you go to a lot of places like i have a few clients from indianapolis and i was just in indianapolis a couple weeks ago and i was like hey what's your guys' state food there, or your city food? And they were like, pork tenderloin sandwich. And I'm like, you guys up in SD, what's yours? Chicken fried steak or something? Ours would probably be steak. They would even say chislik here is what they would say,
Starting point is 01:16:38 which chislik is like deep fried steak cubes pretty much. Okay, see, that would be cool. But here's the thing. When you think of a pork tenderloin that's just like some shit on the menu you might get you know like something my grandpa would get and everybody'd be like huh interesting yeah and so uh and also like there's not a lot of great value variety in pork tenderloin it's either like handmade or it's frozen and made and those are the two varieties and they're kind of obvious but it doesn't go much beyond that where when we tell you that we have barbecue here i mean you have 60 options right oh yeah yeah that's the better
Starting point is 01:17:16 choice hands down like where my gym is next door we're attached to smoking guns barbecue you know at one block away there's hog jaw barbecue um you know there's breweries all around us and then like a couple blocks away there's another you know uh shipping container you know center those restaurants and there's barbecue there um slaps barbecue is three miles away um jack stack is four miles away i mean there's so much barbecue in kansas city i've only been to maybe a quarter of them maybe maybe a sixth of them yeah god that sounds good yeah yeah no and and and also like the cool thing about kc barbecue is i'm always i watch a lot of shows, and of course it looks delicious everywhere. Like, none of it's shitty.
Starting point is 01:18:08 But when I see, like, Carolina BBQ and I'm like, oh, you guys only eat whole hog barbecue? Yeah, right. That's kind of fucking boring. Yeah. And here in Kansas City, like, I judge the places I go to based on what I can get there. And I try to get stuff that I can't make myself because I make some good barbecue myself, damn it. And so like, I know that if I want burnt ends, I go to Slaps, Jack Stack or Q39. And then I know if I want ribs, I might want to go to Arthur Bryant's or Gates. And then I know that if I want like something like far out that I know where I
Starting point is 01:18:42 want to go for that, you know, and you know, if I want to go to a vinegar based place that I'm going to go to like uh you know this one over here um I think lc's um and then like so there's all these different variety of options because Kansas City barbecue isn't dry rub barbecue or whole hog barbecue it's whatever you want to do barbecue just make it like really really good and you can like play around with sauce too guys yeah that's good stuff gotta get the kansas city barbecue tour going i've been i have been to kansas city once and had some pretty good i have too i have too you guys should do a little a little gym tour or you should come down for a meet um you know we uh once we can uh knock off these uh spectator rules we do a couple 120 lifter meets a year and uh the clothing companies do okay so you guys should
Starting point is 01:19:32 come down absolutely that's not crazy far out of our you know compared to most meets that's pretty close right yeah exactly compared to most cities that exist it's pretty close that is the honest truth that is very true ain't cheap to fly out of fargo no no no that's right uh no that kind of wraps up most of what we had what if what if you know obviously i think if people are local in kansas city they know how to find you for the gym and stuff but you also said uh you do coaching out of there and stuff too what if what if i mean can are can people actively become a client of yours now if they if they want to i mean do you have openings for that sort of thing yeah so i coach about 60 lifters at a time i program about 15 a week but i communicate with all of them all week long and uh so like after i get off the phone like
Starting point is 01:20:24 i try not to ever you know go to sleep without responding, uh, so like after I get off the phone, like I try not to ever, you know, go to sleep without responding to anybody. And, uh, so when we get off the phone, I'll respond to, you know, 10 or 15 people and then go to bed. But, uh, so I try to keep my weeks kind of even. And so if somebody sends me an inquiry, um, you know, if it's somebody I really want to work with, then, uh, then I'll figure it out. But, uh, I'm looking for long-term athletes that I can affect over a long period. And, uh, you know, I like working with people that have some long-term goals and that, uh, understand the process takes a while. Um, I don't have a ton of time for beginners right now, but I have coaches that I can refer them to that I think would be fantastic. And so same thing with nutrition
Starting point is 01:21:05 coaches. I don't do that, but I know some really fantastic ones that can help you. You know, depending on what sports you play or what you want to get ready for, then, you know, I can either help you or point you in the right direction. But at our gym, we offer, you know, online coaching, personal training kind of stuff where we coach you in person you know, uh, online coaching, personal training kind of stuff where we coach you in person weekly. Um,
Starting point is 01:21:26 we offer a strong man power lifting and, we have Olympic weightlifting specialists too. And, uh, so yeah, we also do just general gym memberships too. We're 60 bucks a month or 24 seven. We don't do any contracts or any dumb shit.
Starting point is 01:21:40 Um, you know, we don't have any extra fees and crap like that. I worked at a gym that did all that stuff. So I based everything that I do based off of what I didn't like, you know, we don't have any extra fees and crap like that. I worked at a gym that did all that stuff. So I based everything that I do based off of what I didn't like, you know? Yeah. And, uh, and so, uh, yeah, reach out to me if you need a coach. Starting point is 01:21:56 you because I'm really, really passionate about getting people in touch with the right people. I think that, uh, the biggest gift that you get when you get to the top of a sport like powerlifting is the ability to connect to the people that can make the most difference in people's lives and then being able to give that to other people. And so being able to share messages from people like Mark Bell or Stuart McGill or Andrew Locke and people like that and John Heck, who I work with, and all the great coaches and trainers that I've been around, you know, Aaron Horschik from Squat U. Like, being able to share what those people have
Starting point is 01:22:32 and give it to people that might not know where to look is the biggest gift that I've got, you know? And so I love to help people and get those opportunities. And it's hard to sometimes find, you know, places to be helpful and places to be useful and places to serve your purpose. Um, so it's really cool when people reach out for that because, uh, it's an opportunity and a gift. That's awesome. I think you can tell by listening to you that you are really passionate about it. And it's not just, uh, it comes across pretty clear. Yeah. Pretty authentically.ically yeah i was in the gym last night
Starting point is 01:23:05 and there's a guy that just joined the gym that uh that is a local lifter that's a strong guy and i really wanted to be at our place for a long time and he's finally the place in his life where he can be and uh i was bench pressing and i was looking over and i was noticing he like touched his leg uh once and i said i called him over and i said hey what's going on with your leg and he said i've got a thing with my hip and I don't know what's up and I've been wondering if it was ever gonna go away and I said well you know let's let's play around a little bit and I said I bet you didn't think you were gonna get into yoga and your first night at strong barbell club hanging out with me you
Starting point is 01:23:41 know and I put him in Warrior One pose, which is something Andrew Locke showed me to be effective for treating the psoas. And I put him in Warrior One, and it just lit him up and just sent lightning through his psoas. And I was like, damn, buddy, you got a mad psoas. And so just being able to, like like see somebody for five seconds and being able to help them with something they've been toiling with for weeks um is uh is something that's a gift
Starting point is 01:24:11 that i've been given um from all these people that i get to work with and to be able to give it to somebody like him and in that moment uh just feels really really good to be useful and to be doing what you're meant to do that's's cool. Yeah, that's really cool. That's cool beans. Yeah. I want that to be something I get more and more and more and more and more and more good at, you know, I want to, I want to be able to travel and talk to people. I want to, I want to serve whatever purpose that I've gotten this at the highest level.
Starting point is 01:24:38 I've got it. I've got to, I've got to find time to get smarter while I do this. And, and luckily I've been hurt enough to be able to get smarter from people smarter than me. You know, that's a good silver lining there then. Well, if I,
Starting point is 01:24:51 if I wouldn't have gotten hurt, I probably wouldn't have had the time to learn that. Right. Right. Uh, I wouldn't, I wouldn't have pointed the gun in that direction. It's not my natural inclination.
Starting point is 01:25:00 Uh, a lot of this stuff came easy to me. You know, most people that are really strong power lifters don't they didn't have to work that hard to get strong to begin with um you know they had a gift and then they exploited it you know and uh and so uh you know that's that's just kind of how it works that's how genetics work and uh so you know this has gotten me to be better at stuff that i'm not genetically gifted at that that I'm not usually inclined to do.
Starting point is 01:25:29 It's forced me to learn. And it's been really, really incredible for me. It's been frustrating, too. No. Yeah, that is cool. That's great. And I was going to add this too. Unfortunately, our microphones are not scratch and sniff, so we couldn't re-authenticate the best smelling super heavyweight power lifter in the world. But at this point, we don't have any additional or differing evidence to dispute it.
Starting point is 01:25:56 So I guess you still do hold the title. I've been around some heavyweights in the last year, you know, D- and, uh, and, uh, and a few guys. And, uh, yeah, it's still true. Yeah. Dan. So you're saying Dan definitely is not taking the title from you at this point then Dan may have smelled better than I know, but all I smelled was Coors light. Not the worst, but it doesn't qualify you to the to the level of best yeah right yeah so uh definitely the mountains were blue and uh all great so if somebody's around and you know they get a hug if you just want to lean in for a little beard sniff and you'll just know what's up yep the proof's in the pudding more more guys than girls do that for me naturally that's right
Starting point is 01:26:46 definitely all right jp we do we do appreciate it and we'll uh continue to follow along on what you got going on and we'll have to catch up with you again someday thank you guys though we're doing a little uh expansion at the gym with some new equipment and uh and we took down these really really big wild shelves that were up high and and it exposed the space where we painted the wall where our massonomics flags are going.
