Welcome, everyone, to episode 150 of the mass dynamics podcast, the world's strongest podcast. Any thoughts on that one?
Starting point is 00:00:33 Tommy speechless. I don't even have anything to say. We, we made it thus far. Uh, is this where we say this is the end? That's the surprise of one 50. Thanks guys.
Starting point is 00:00:47 We did it all right got you for 150 hours and uh jokes on you that's it there was no ending it's like a twist ending there is no just kidding we got at least another 150 oh yeah there's no quit here it is pretty crazy though when you think back 150 episodes. That's true. That is a lot. It literally is crazy if you think about the hours involved in 150 podcast episodes. Yes. I will put the bet out there that chances are the fitness podcasts that you are listening to or have listened to probably aren't going to get to 150. Most of them not.
Starting point is 00:01:21 We've got to be in the top 1%, 2%, gotta be in the very the the top one two three percent of in the and keep it unmonetized for your guys's listening pleasure as long as we did that's why we do that just just so that you guys don't have to listen to those stupid ads we could be raking in the sponsorship dollars right now if we wanted to but we could literally be recording this in a pool of money but we refuse to we refuse to sell out no one will own us no we're not sellouts unless the price is right yeah cbd get that out of here supplements no way apparel we got our own beard oil doesn't do anything no no man can buy us unless uh herb strong or unless i mean they have the right price well then yeah we're open to ideas No man can buy us. Unless Herbstrong or...
Starting point is 00:02:05 Unless, I mean, they have the right price. Well, then, yeah, we're open to ideas. But as of right now, no. We did do something special for $150. We wore the same sweatshirt. We did. Matching. I think I did see someone comment that they were upset that we didn't have
Starting point is 00:02:17 Masonomics apparel on last week. We've righted the ship on that. We did. And also, last week, just like every week it's absolutely freezing and so i just had to wear a different sweatshirt for one day i guess yeah yeah um we did we do did have some really special stuff planned for 150 but what we decided to do is it's too early so we're gonna save it for 200 yeah yeah you know what you gotta save something right we have to leave something in the tank all of our gimmicks like in a, so we're going to save it for $200. Yeah. Yeah. You know what? You've got to save something. Right.
Starting point is 00:02:45 We have to leave something in the tank. We can't do all of our gimmicks like in a few episodes. We're going to keep that in the back pocket. Speaking of apparel, we do have something here. This is actually your shirt, Tommy. I'm wearing mine underneath this, but you can unfold that and see what we've got here. This is a – Very nice.
Starting point is 00:03:03 We got the Mitchell South Dakota Powerell south dakota powerlifting club hooking us up yeah if you're watching the video you can see me waving it in all of its glory here so i actually thought they're red yeah i actually thought it was i thought you had the massonomics had their red shirt underneath your shirt but they had their red massonomics shirt we used to have now very cool they are uh um andrew prereeb specifically, very, very involved in the powerlifting community and has done a lot. Andrew has competed at IPF Worlds in single ply, and I think maybe he has a silver medal either in full power or bench, one of those two. Correct me if I'm wrong, Andrew, but you've done something like that, I'm sure of it.
Starting point is 00:03:46 Yeah, and you've done probably more meets than any of us, than the two of us will ever do combined. Yes. I'm pretty comfortable saying that, I think. Yeah, and he coaches a lot of kids. For those of you that listen and don't know, we are from South Dakota, so not too far down the road from us is Mitchell, South Dakota. Yeah, coaches a lot of high school kids, a lot of adults.
Starting point is 00:04:06 I mean, kind of the whole team down there. He's got. Yeah. There are quite a few USAPL lifters that. And I do. You know what? I actually, my first memory of him. I do remember our first meet ever.
Starting point is 00:04:16 Uh, I think like my second attempt bench was like 265 pounds and I got it. Felt pretty good. And he came over. He's like, that was a really good second attempt and I was like oh awesome I still remember that he's a really like a passionate lifter like that he gets super excited and uh you know you can tell he gets excited for the people that he's there lifting with too so that's pretty fun that's always good and also he's in it for his own crew but also just like just like that what you described, just like seeing everyone do well.
Starting point is 00:04:47 Oh, yeah. Yeah. Positivity goes a long way with this stuff. Yeah. The first thing I remember about them is the first meet we did, I had gangsta raps. And I think gangsta raps were relatively new at the time. And one of the people checking in equipment wasn't going to want to let them pass. I do remember that.
Starting point is 00:05:06 I do remember that they had been approved or at least thought that that was the case. I didn't even know as much about that whole process and all the approval shit at the time. And this was four or five years ago, so it was a little different then. And he might have been behind me in line. He wasn't one of the equipment checker inners, but he is like a USAPL judge, and he's tied in, and they all knew him, of course, and he kind of came to the rescue and said, no, those did just make the approved list, or they are approved now.
Starting point is 00:05:37 So he saved the day to prevent me from having to bench without – actually prevent me from having to borrow someone else's. Someone had to bench over 400 pounds that day. That's right. I think I might have been the only one at least raw well thank you for the shirt though yes and i i do have mine underneath but as tommy mentioned it's cold here in south dakota so but uh fun fact about mitchell south dakota it is the home of the world's only corn palace yeah google that right now. Have you been to the Corn Palace?
Starting point is 00:06:07 I've been there, I think, when I was like a junior or senior. I think state basketball was there. I think that's the only time I've been there. Really, really strange gym for basketball. Yes, yeah. Home of Mike Miller as well. Yeah, Mike Miller, the former NBA player for Miami Heat, of course. Won a championship with the Heat.
Starting point is 00:06:28 Yeah. I think he got drafted by the Grizzlies. Yeah, I think that's right. I think he was Rookie of the Year, wasn't he? I think he probably was. Pretty sure he played for the Magic for a period of time. Yeah, I think so. Several teams probably.
Starting point is 00:06:40 Yeah, I want to say, well, and then he ended up at the Timberwolves. I think his last year or two was with the Timberwolves. He was a good three-point shooter good good uh spot up three-point shooter i think he went through a lot of injuries later in his career and uh like hobbled around even when he was playing with lebron and duane wade uh for miami it was like he could sometimes it looked like he could barely run down the court but he could still make it rain from downtown that's all you got to do yeah throw them up. So that's Mitchell, South Dakota. Thanks again, guys.
Starting point is 00:07:07 Yeah, very cool. Have you been seeing, we've talked about the events for the Arnold Strongman Classic for the professional strongman. We talked about maybe the most interesting one this year was going to be the Wheel of Pain. Have you been seeing the pictures or the video? I saw a couple pictures because I'm trying to remember. I saw your comment about the shipping for free. Yeah, it was on Rogue's post, and I said, is this going to qualify for the – they run a deal where five ships free,
Starting point is 00:07:35 where if you buy five certain items, you get free shipping. And depending on what those items are, you can save a lot of money. Yeah, yeah. Sometimes they've had – I remember Brandon Campbell put it out there before where the calibrated plate set. Which is an enormous deal. Right. Because, you know, we have that set that we had bought for the gym at one point in time and didn't get free shipping.
Starting point is 00:07:52 It probably cost like $500. Yeah. But I asked if that would qualify for the five-ships free. And this thing just, like, I didn't realize how big it is. Like, in the picture, it probably has to be like 15 feet tall, right? Yeah. Yeah, I think it is. And then, like, the spokes of it probably has to be like 15 feet tall right yeah yeah i think it is like the spokes of this wheel it's like 40 feet long yeah but the owner of roga bill yeah responded and said uh what was he said he said if you buy five yeah yeah yeah yes and uh which probably has to be a hundred thousand dollars yes like they have a stupid amount
Starting point is 00:08:24 of money into the actual cost of this device. Our response back to him was that we'll just wait until Titan makes one out of toothpicks. He didn't respond to that. We got the last one. But this thing is ridiculous. It is. I'm not sure exactly how they make it harder than what it is right now because it looks like there's just a few average people pushing it around,
Starting point is 00:08:48 so they must weigh it down or create more friction or something. Yeah, it's got to be something like that. I'm really curious to see that event. It is going to be one hell of a spectacle, that's for sure. Yeah, it'll definitely look like it's something out of a movie. If someone does some video and stylizes it and puts some music to it, you're like, oh, yeah, it was some crazy scene where people were building shit in the Stone Age.
Starting point is 00:09:10 Yeah. What I'm worried about is they make it so heavy and so hard that these guys just can't even do it. That would suck. Or the alternative, that it's not hard enough and they just are spinning it like a merry-go-round. I don't know how you find the right level of resistance for that to make it like
Starting point is 00:09:29 really hard for these guys but still so they can do it that that is how do you even test it to find like okay that's the right amount of making this thing strong man that kind of is the the fine line yeah you can't ever have something at this level you can't ever have something that looks like they're just flying through it because it doesn't look hard yeah and then you can't ever have something at this level. You can't ever have something that looks like they're just flying through it because it doesn't look hard. Yeah. And then you can't have something that just people start. Like last year was the borderline, the natural stone. Right.
Starting point is 00:09:53 Because for a while, our outside of. Mateus. Mateus, yeah. Outside of Mateus. I was going to say Martins, yes. Outside of Mateus, who luckily, you know, he was one of the first couple guys to go. It would have been a brutal event. If he wasn't there, that would have been like, God, that event was a bust.
Starting point is 00:10:12 That was way too freaking hard. Yeah, he saved the day for the rogue broadcast. But because he was there and did what he did, it turned it into one of the coolest things that we got to see. So if everyone's going to go and get a half rotation and someone comes out and gets a full one and then some like yeah people will go nuts that'll be and that's probably about ideals i don't think you want anyone going like two times around no no like that right so that that probably one rotation is the line of where you're starting to get into like winner's territory on that event yeah yeah that's what i
Starting point is 00:10:44 would think because who is testing these events out well that's the thing like these are the 10 10 of the i'll say 10 of the 20 strongest men in the world because maybe there's some people not there that could be it's yada yada but it's like there's maybe 20 people in the world that could compete in this yeah so who who tries out the wheel of pain to find that level of resistance unless they're looking at past events and basing it on like other you know like yeah but something like the wheel of pain just like you don't know bigger like it's different yeah it is i don't know how they do that yeah that's that's kind of the same thing i'm wondering because you would assume
Starting point is 00:11:20 if they had some guy out there testing it you would see it on his instagram yeah okay out at out at rogue trying out some new right you know guy out there testing it, you would see it on his Instagram. Yeah. Out at Rogue, trying out some new events. Unless they really keep it under – They could. I guess that's a possibility too. Yeah. If you want to see inside shots of more of like the experimental stuff that they do, don't follow Rogue. Follow Bill because that's what he always – his posts are almost always like these things that they're working on,
Starting point is 00:11:47 like they were doing a completely stainless steel power rack or something like that that a lot of people were excited about. I mean, I don't care about that personally. Can you lift more weight when you use it, though? I hope so. It's shiny. That's all you need to say. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:03 But he does a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff that they're working on. Like when they're coming out with the combo rack, he's kind of had some posts of that. And it's always, he leaves it, they're like cryptic. You can just see half of it, or it's blurred. Never like a really good. That teaser is. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:22 Yeah, so that's good stuff. Well, what do you think about talking about our featured topic here today there's some big news in the world of of strongman i mean do we want to hit the people with this yeah there's some big controversial news in the world of strongman and the news is that larry wheels has been invited to the giants live world log lift challenge so tanner explain to us why this is controversial okay the reason this is controversial controversial first of all the log lift uh championship what that is is the first event of europe's strongest man so everyone that's in here so it is like a and this is a pro
Starting point is 00:13:04 strongman event correct yes yes it is a pro strongman event correct yes yes it's a pro strongman half thor is the reigning europe's strongest man a lot of people would consider it to be the third biggest strongman competition of the year world's strongest man in the arnold and then and i feel like probably as much as far as the crowd goes it's probably the best one you could go to yes that's just what it looks like yes i think so too the arnold is really fun and really cool but i don't think it really compares to the yeah i don't think it compares to one of the first few rows it's like good luck scene and we know how garbage world's strongest
Starting point is 00:13:33 man looks from a you know they're in if you're one of the 20 people that are there it's probably fun but yeah yeah you're not in a rowdy crowd of people like ready to see some stuff right so it is the first event of europe's strongest man so everyone that's in europe's strongest man will be competing in it but then they also invite uh other you know features strong man log pressers yes exactly and they just come and just compete in that event but like uh half thor he'll be competing in europe's strongest man so he'll be in the event, obviously. But for someone like him, that may make him, the way he attacks that one event,
Starting point is 00:14:12 might be different than someone that's just a... Okay, before, because I understood that part of it now, but let's say there's, I don't know, is there like eight guys doing the entirety of Europe's Strongest Man? Yeah, I don't know. I would guess like ten, maybe, something like that. So let's say there's six more guys that are doing the log only part yeah do the do the strongman guys or do the do the log only guys do their points count against how they rank the strongman guys in their positioning do you know what i'm saying yeah i don't know but my my guess is that it would be like they just took those guys like they don't count the scoring for the
Starting point is 00:14:46 strongman right they like that would make the most sense so if uh brian shaw is invited so if he gets first place and half thor gets second i think maybe for the strongman competition that that half thor would get first place points for that event right that's my guess but i don't know it's logical but the only other way i guess you could do it is that if that was the case half thor would just get second place points and no one in the actual event would get the first place points um still that kind of screws over your strongman competitors right because you can get you can get bigger gaps in there that's i i would see that they would just pull them out of there like they didn't exist. You would think. Like if there was two or three in between, that they would pull those out
Starting point is 00:15:28 and you would go first, second, third down the list. Yep. But some of the others that have been invited, who's on the list there? So the lineup here, we have Brian Shaw, Rob Kearney. Yeah. He's American, and he is, I think, the 2017 champ of that event. And he does a split jerk, I'm pretty sure. Oh, he does.
Starting point is 00:15:47 So he's quite a bit. Most of these guys are going to be push pressers. Brian Shaw, Half Thor is borderline a strict press. But Rob Hede does a split jerk, I'm pretty sure. Is he a strongman competitor? Yeah, he is. He is. And he's very strong.
Starting point is 00:16:03 Overhead press. Yeah, you're not going to get to this point not being very strong. Overhead press, I think, is his best event by far, though. Okay. And then you have Robert Oberst, Iron Baby, Half Thor. Yeah. And Iron Baby and Robert Oberst. Robert Oberst is obviously just in the competition.
Starting point is 00:16:23 Iron Baby, I don't know if he could potentially compete where's he from again i forget but i don't know if he is just doing the log lift or not last year he did just the log lift yeah yeah but we obviously know he's an insanely strong overhead presser you know presses over 500 pounds on just most implements that there are um but then the big surprise uh entry the the surprise invite to this is larry wheels and the reason i would say surprise is because the other people on this list brian shaw rob kearney uh robert over robert over and iron bibby are all, you know, not arguably. Pro strongmen. Yeah, pro strongmen and, like, certainly some of the best overhead pressers in the world. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:12 I mean, some of the best of all time. Yes, yes, of all time, yes. Larry Wheels has done one 180-kilogram log press on Instagram. That's his resume. Brian Shaw is four-time world's strongest man. Do you know, like, where, like, okay, like, last year, Iron Baby won last year, correct? I think, yes.
Starting point is 00:17:35 I think that's what it was. Do you know, like, what he won it with? Ah, that would be good to look up. I wonder if it was, I don't know. I don't know. I'm thinking, know if it was i'm thinking like it was i wonder if it was like 475 pounds ish is my best guess i think z has the record at slightly over 500 and and i'm pretty sure nobody beat the record did you find it there well i'm just looking well this result is all the way from 2016 okay and. And in 2016, it looks like Robert Oberst and Dimitar tied with 445.
Starting point is 00:18:12 Okay. I'm pretty sure. I want to say it's like 474. But they use a big wooden log. And that is harder than, you know, z's world record is on a steel log so that does make a difference yep i'm just trying to find this but i think i'm pretty sure it's in that 4 4 60 4 70 range yeah which in kilos i don't know if that comes out to 220 what would that be that yeah maybe 220 or 215 yeah 220 would put you like 480 yeah and maybe that's gotten pushed that high i want to say it's 215 to 220 but so larry
Starting point is 00:18:56 did 180 which is i think 396 pounds and he did that for one rep in training at half Thor's gym, but all these other guys have some very exceptional strong man backgrounds. Yes. The bigger thing, there is a lot of competitors out there. Some American, uh, some elsewhere throughout the, the world that have a strong man background have competed a lot and say world's strongest man and
Starting point is 00:19:26 other competitions and have log pressed much more than larry wheels is 396 and they've done it in competitions and they're not invited and they did not get invited and it's kind of i wouldn't say want to say career because it's not uh for most of them, it's probably still not even their primary source of income. But it is like the thing they've been putting, you know, I'd almost say like their heart and soul into for. It kind of is their life. Yeah, it is their life and has been. You don't casually do strongman into like that level. Right. It is basically their life.
Starting point is 00:20:06 They're at the top level of it, or right around that top level, and they do more. They've lifted more weight than that on many occasions, and they didn't get invited. But the flip side of it, what's your initial thought on that? Well, they're probably doing it because of the media attention. Right. Yes, exactly, and that's the other side i think that's what they're doing is because they can write off of his like personality and just the audience that he brings with him yeah um it just
Starting point is 00:20:34 kind of sucks that like that's what it comes to for some of these things now like when the competition really is to find the best log presser, like someone that, you know, is at least at this time, not in that contention. It's like, well, why are they there?
Starting point is 00:20:51 We're, we're all these guys probably could, you know, have a legit shot at it. Yup. And I'm not saying Larry's not capable. I just like this year, probably not going to happen.
Starting point is 00:21:00 Yeah. Like, unless there's some freak accidents and he has a, you know 20 increase on his total on his one rep max like probably not in the contention right a theory out there is that uh giants live this isn't the theory part but giants live is like a feeder for world's strongest man a theory is that this is the way that they're going to get larry in this and then have some sort of rationale to invite him to world's strongest man yeah so yeah i could yeah
Starting point is 00:21:35 i could so that he could compete in the 2019 world's strongest man yep there's a conspiracy that is um but so one of the top american log pressers, I would say, that didn't get invited is Brian Benzel from Omaha. And he's been pretty vocal that he is not extremely excited about Larry getting this invite and guys like himself and other career strong men that have, I would say, significantly higher log presses than him. He has three World's Strongest Man competitions to his name. He's competed at World's Strongest Man in the last three years,
Starting point is 00:22:14 2016, 2017, 2018. And this week he's posted a few log press videos. This one is 390 for a set of three okay keep in mind larry did his pr that he that he squeaked out there was 396 which is still very impressive it's just that we're comparing larry against the best log pressers in the world and then i think it was just uh today as we talk, or today or yesterday, Brian did a beltless 200-kilogram log press, 440 pounds. Someone should tell him he should go to Giants Live. I think he would have liked to. He even commented in his post just trying to get on Larry Wheel's level
Starting point is 00:23:02 and maybe one day be strong enough to get invited to the giants live world's strongest man log lift uh finals like he did i want to see him post up like a 480 like log lift oh one fell through the cracks i guess um so i did reach out to to brian to get see if he had a comment for us when we're talking today and i uh he did he had a okay he had a comment so we have his official press release yeah yeah so i'll read this it'll be kind of long but it's definitely worth hearing because other than just getting our you and i perspective on this as complete outsiders and just you know just our thoughts it's fun to see the guy's thoughts that this is actually affecting affecting like it's a whole different perspective than us thinking yeah it'll be kind of cool to
Starting point is 00:23:45 see larry wheels do that which it is cool i'm still gonna i'm still being excited yeah right but it's good to get this other perspective he said my thoughts on it are essentially i totally understand what they're trying to do by inviting larry uh that creates more exposure and buzz and try and get more people watching the contest everyone knows that and i don't think uh anyone is unaware that it's a pr stunt and he doesn't really have a shot at placing well i think it's just another step in the direction of making strongman a show and less than an actual athletic event there are a few guys myself included capable of hitting 210 plus kilogram log uh that won't get consideration to be there 210 plus would be 462 something like that i'd love a shot to and 462 which would be about 65 pounds more than what larry's hit i'd love a
Starting point is 00:24:35 shot to compete uh at the event and even more to take a shot at the american record i just wish i didn't have to have some kind of backstory and a huge following to get it. This is also nothing new, though. There have always been guys who promoters and those that influence latch onto and give preferential treatment and almost force success on them. I have absolutely nothing against Larry, and if I was him, I'd be doing the same thing he is. I think he has potential, but I don't think he'll ever be a real force in the sport. However, no matter what he does, I think he's one of those guys that will have success pushed on him, and he won't be able to help but have a successful strongman career as
Starting point is 00:25:17 he wants to have. Collectively, I think the professional strongman community is pissed off about how things are unfolding with Larry. Personally personally i think that they're going to use this giants live invite to give him a spot at world's strongest man and if that happens i really hope more people are vocal about it being bullshit like i have been about his invite to the log lift world championships and that's from brian benzel three-time world's strongest man competitor like i don't think you can disagree with anything you say in there yeah i don't think he's anything outrageous right it's just yeah it's kind of a shitty system right and you can tell he's a little pissed because it's negatively affecting him yeah but that is what it is i'm sure you know it's a pr thing to but if it does get more eyes well that and watching it and that
Starting point is 00:26:01 if his million followers are all like oh giants live like i'm interested in giants live now yep and that's the thing that sucks about all this is because like especially in powerlifting and strongman just because you're the best doesn't mean people care to watch like that's what is that's what it's coming to with the sport yeah and uh people that are trying to like get eyes on things and get money and sponsorships need people that attract the attention. Yes. And the sad part of it is a lot of times being one of the best doesn't mean you get attention. It's like he says, your backstory and your persona and your online presence, like that is almost as big of it as your strength now.
Starting point is 00:26:44 Yeah, that is almost as big of it as your strength now. Yeah, it is. And the people running these events want people there that are going to make them more popular. Like, that's not stupid. Like, it definitely adversely affects us, too. Like, we make excellent clothing. And I know for a fact there's clothing companies that suck out there.
Starting point is 00:27:01 And the only reason they have anything is because of the names attached to them. Yeah. Yeah, that's true. I don't think that's unreasonable no that is true i think people like well i think people see stuff and know like there's certain companies like yeah yeah how is that a thing just because they have those people there's certain people attached to these things and yeah and you know it's all subjective with that but it's just it's a lot of things whoever you can attach to it yeah there there's that marketing component to it. Well, and Brian does wear a Lyft shirt,
Starting point is 00:27:29 so I would have liked to have seen him there for that reason specifically. Because he definitely would have worn it. There's no question about it. He would have worn that while he was there. He did say the 4X Lyft shirt is one of the few shirts that actually fits him properly. And you said we made that with you in mind? Yeah, that's why we did it, Brian. Okay, so I also got a comment from Kale Beck.
Starting point is 00:27:50 Kale is the man that runs Starting Strongman and is probably as entrenched in the Strongman community and latest news as anyone. Yes, he knows a thing or two about a thing or two. And here's what he had to say. Basically, it's just strong man being strong man. It didn't take a spot away from anyone, but there are others that should have also been invited.
Starting point is 00:28:11 I think that's an interesting point. It didn't take a spot away from anyone because there's not a set number of spots to be had. He also said it's interesting because we don't know what he's capable of and the rest that weren't invited we basically know somewhere around the 430 to 430 430 to 450 pounds nothing record-breaking so it doesn't really add anything from a promoter standpoint so their point is or his point there is that anyone that didn't get invited wasn't gonna break the right they might have been could have been even placing high but
Starting point is 00:28:43 they wouldn't be record-breaking. Giants Live has always said, if anyone can hit these numbers, we will invite them as a guest lifter. I mean, George effing Lehman was supposed to do the deadlift champs a few years back. Basically, anyone who thinks this is new, it's social media's fault, hasn't followed Strongman very well or has short-term memory yes it could be improved on in the future years but it's the current state of the sport
Starting point is 00:29:09 I think that I hadn't read that fully yet and I think that George Lehman comment is pretty funny I didn't know that was a thing yeah and he's kind of disappeared yeah yeah he lives in like not even really kind of he has disappeared literally george liebman could be dead we don't like i think he was in thailand for a while do you think he lives there now or i don't even know because he had i want to say he had a youtube six months ago he was back in florida for a little bit okay and then he was like gone again you know what's funny ryan i talked about it before not that long ago at the gym not that long ago what i don't know maybe it was 2015 when he was pumping out videos quite a bit and he was he was pushing for a uh his 900 pound deadlift or whatever it was
Starting point is 00:29:54 years ago i think at the time i just felt like he was like the only man in the world that uh could deadlift that much like borderline 900 pounds And now in 2019, it's not even a thing. No. Well, because he had, I think he, did he tie or break like the 308 American record or the super heavyweight? Who was the, Vince Urbank's record, right? Yeah. 902.
Starting point is 00:30:19 Yeah, it was like 903.8 or 902 something like, and that was just like, oh, this is kind of where peak performance is right right now like and it was also like his like lifting as far as competition standards go are you know slightly questionable i would say yeah oh if you want to see like some of the greatest gym lifts of all time i would say yeah he has some of the greatest deadlift gym lifts ever like yeah i think he has a youtube. I think it's the one with Nick Wright where in the gym he does, like, 900 for a set of five or something. He is great at the – he is the master of the touch and go rep. Like, get the first one and then from there it's five.
Starting point is 00:30:54 And I'm not saying that makes it easier. No. That was just his style. But, oh, those videos are insane to watch. And I remember at the time thinking, like, this is – there are absolute freaks out there. No one will ever touch this. And then, yeah, now people are are like that's just a thing uh steve johnson would be you know it's probably a better i think
Starting point is 00:31:12 he's deadlifted above that 903 if i remember right i think so chris weiss certainly has you know he's passed that up yep and now you have your kaylor right and then you get into the lighter guys yeah kaylor will you know they're doing it right you know guys. Kaler, you know, they're doing it every meet they go to. You know that they're going to deadlift like 900-plus pounds. And I think by the time 2019 is over, there's going to be several more 900-pounders in there. Yeah, mix in some of those other Russian guys in those weight classes that sumo deadlift.
Starting point is 00:31:37 I mean, George Lehman was a conventional deadlifter, but that doesn't make any difference in the world record. Right, right, right. It doesn't matter. right right yeah it's just funny how how much he disappeared from and how much it's changed just in those four years i'd say of what like you think of as a 900 pound deadlift yeah yeah it really has and also how crazy is is or was george lehman like and i'm not saying and i'm saying like oh that dude's crazy. He's so strong and stuff. There were some mental issues, for sure, at play there, without a doubt.
Starting point is 00:32:10 I think he'll be the first one to read that, too. He'll watch any of his YouTube videos. He'll go way in-depth on that. But, yeah, how times have changed. I miss him, hashtag bring back George Lehman. That would be cool. Muscle masochist or something. Yeah, that's what it was.
Starting point is 00:32:25 That was, you know, one of the few YouTube channels I watched at the time. Yeah, any of that like intro music. Yeah, yeah. The guitar's on play every time. There's like a video of him in like a 10 foot by 10 foot library
Starting point is 00:32:36 with tape holding the weights on. And he went through like the stages of being like really jacked. He had like a time where he was really enormous and like cut yes and then uh like just to where he blew up to get the deadlift record and do you think he was using anabolic uh steroids probably not he probably had extra scoops of creatine going into it i bet well herb strong wasn't a thing so how the hell did he do it he must have been so inflamed. I bet that's why he quit.
Starting point is 00:33:08 All the inflammation. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense now, actually. Had only Herbstrong been around in 2015, George Lehman could have been to that 1,000-pound deadlift by now. It was just too soon. Yeah. That inflammation over that many years really does take a toll. It can, for sure.
Starting point is 00:33:26 So that's kind of that event. Piggybacking off of that, and we could even call this our Big Lift segment, did you see what Mr. Julius Bjornsson did? I did. Was it 10.42? 10.42. For the Elephant Bar Deadlift. I think he did 10.41 for the record last year. Is that what it was? I couldn't remember if it was 10.39, 10.40,42. For the Elephant Bar deadlift. I think he did 1041 for the record last year.
Starting point is 00:33:45 Is that what it was? I couldn't remember if it was 1039, 1040, 1041. I thought it was like 1036 or 1039. Okay, so it was just not much more than what he did. Yeah, it's within a few pounds. What did you think of the – what's your cliff notes from the video of the lift? Cliff notes from the video. Okay, there's a lot of guys yelling at him, a lot of guys.
Starting point is 00:34:03 Different levels of enthusiasm to pay attention. That's actually probably the more interesting thing to look at because you know he's going to get the lift if he's posting the video. You don't have to worry about anything there. But if you check out some of the guys and see what they're all doing, there's a whole different level of interest and excitement going on there. But the lift off the floor looked really easy. It slowed down a little bit past the knee.
Starting point is 00:34:27 But I definitely didn't see that. And then he gets it, and I didn't think like, oh, that is the max for sure. He's got more there. Do you think it was easier or harder than when we saw him do his final attempt last year? I'd have to go back and actually watch the video for sure. Similar, I would say. Yeah, it did seem pretty similar. Maybe just off the top of my head.
Starting point is 00:34:43 Yeah. But so this was just a training lift, i think you know he understands peaking pretty well so it would tell me if he's uh what how far are we out a few weeks well a good peak gives you 20 or more right yeah so he should be at 1300 yeah yeah but you would think like is that going to be worth 50 pounds you know because the goal is 500 kilograms yeah um i think i'm assuming that i don't i don't know if that's his personal goal but that's the number in the air right right so is the peak going to get him i don't know if he's gonna go for that though if he's not because he wants to win the yeah he wants yeah but there also are anyone that breaks
Starting point is 00:35:19 the 500 kilograms they're giving them like 40 grand or something oh it is yeah just for that just for the debt they they put a big price tag because they want and that's also why they like that that's also why they brought in the round system to give them more rest so those guys i didn't realize there was that much money on the line i don't know if 40 is right or maybe it's 20 but it's more than like it's not a thousand that they are the one no it's like it's either uh 10 20 or 40 oh a b or c okay either way i think it kind of has the same so if you win if you get that 500 I don't think that they are the 1,000 that they did for. It's either 10, 20, or 40, A, B, or C. Either way, I think it kind of has the same. So if you get that 500 and don't win the whole thing, you're financially almost not even hurting at all.
Starting point is 00:35:55 Well, I do think the winner of the Arnold gets like 80. Yeah, it is like 80. But he could get that. Why wouldn't he say, I want this 20 and the 80? You know, if you're Thor. Because then he can go home and just wouldn't he say, I want this 20 and the 80? You know, if you're Thor. Because then he can go home and just do nothing for you, right? Yeah, I think that's kind of how he plans his schedule.
Starting point is 00:36:14 But so what's your thought? Do you think he'll get – do you think him or anyone else will get 500 kilograms? I mean, he would be the one that really – Jerry Pritchett did a 950 regular deadlift bar deadlift this week that looked pretty easy just as we're still 150 pounds off there yeah right i mean we're still yeah over 10 in thor's case we're only talking about 50 pounds so it's a lot closer i'm i'm just really torn on this because these guys all like to be so calculated yeah and be like oh nope just longevity and i want to win and I want to win the series, not the... Because I think Thor wants the titles to his name. He wants so many time Arnold's Strongest Man.
Starting point is 00:36:52 Part of me says, no, it's just a letdown. It's a hype thing right now, and it's not going to happen. It almost has to be like the Eddie Hall giant dive thing, because that was just a single lift thing when he did that, right? I think so, yes. I think it was actually similar to what this log where it was uh and he didn't do that yeah so the scenario i could see is thor is maybe last to go and maybe jerry or shaw finished with a 1040 or maybe they finished with a 1045. It's enough to break a new record.
Starting point is 00:37:25 Yep. What does Thor want to do? 500 kilograms. Or does he just want to get you 1050? Yeah. Just chip. Yeah. When the event still set the new world record.
Starting point is 00:37:35 Cause that's actually probably what it will come down to is Brian Shaw and Jerry will both be right in that area of, you know, maybe assuming they're healthy going into it, they both realistically could hit 1,000. Yeah. So then it's like, okay. J.F. Crone could be around 1,000 and a few of them, yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:55 So then unless Shaw is, unless Shaw, the way that that would be prevented is if Shaw or Jerry Pritchett, probably one of those two, comes in so strong that they're not ending at a 1040, that they're ending at a close to 1102. But I just don't know. They've got to be opening when they're doing that, though. They've got to be opening at like 975, don't they?
Starting point is 00:38:18 Yeah, I mean, the second has to be over 1,000 for sure. But Thor and Shaw, I think last year both did two over a thousand you know i think thor's second second was over a thousand yeah it'll be interesting to see it's it'd really be a question as if the if that's the scenario if the money is motivating enough for him to because then it is it's not just the money, though, because it still is – people are going to say, even though it's a different bar, if Thor does 501 kilograms, I think that's actually the number, 501 kilograms. He's got to actually break the record. Because then people – and that is going to cause such a stinky uproar
Starting point is 00:38:58 with all the Eddie Hall fans out there. Oh, yes, because, well, Eddie's was on calibrated plates. Yes, on a regular bar. but it wasn't a suit and these guys can't wear a suit so that's the difference too yep but that will cause because eddie hall fans are pretty like any strongman fans out where someone decides that's my guy yeah are very whether the person's alive or dead, they are very passionate. Much more than powerlifting fans of specific people, don't you think?
Starting point is 00:39:29 Yeah, I don't see the diehard loyalty to a single power. Where Paul Anderson is like, or Bill Kaz, where these people just would live and die for this person and challenge anyone to a fist fight over arguing. I don't know, is it like a thing where you were a kid watching these people on TV, so that's just been burned in your mind as that is the pinnacle, and so you have that your whole life, and that doesn't exist in powerlifting? It has to be something like that.
Starting point is 00:39:56 Yeah, I don't know. That is true, though. I would agree with you. I don't know why that is. But that lift of Thor's, it does leave us open here to see something cool here coming up yeah i'm excited for it yep i agree should we just abandon our booth and go watch it that is uh you know a real that actually is a real moral dilemma right that especially that
Starting point is 00:40:20 specific event because the last two years one of you know it's really fun to go to the cage it's really fun to do the interviews we do and everything but there is something about the feeling of the arnold strongman especially when you're sitting really close and it's one of those and it's the elephant bar deadlift event yep it is it'll it's like a rare you know it's like it's a really there's not many things you do in life where it'll make the hair stand up on the back of your neck and you're like oh my god like i'm seeing something like really cool right here yes like this is something that only happens like to this caliber like once a year yeah yes right and maybe and to a certain extent maybe you're watching once
Starting point is 00:41:02 in a lifetime you know there's no guarantee Well, and that's the thing, too. Like, okay, maybe a couple guys get hurt or they retire. Yeah. Like, I don't know. There could be a couple years where people aren't pushing 1,000 pounds anymore. Yeah. Like, that territory isn't getting touched. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:16 So, yeah, you don't know. Me not seeing the sandbag toss over a bar, not that big of a deal. But, like, that elephant elephant bar especially this year the way it's set up it's it is poised to be like really cool yeah but it's also not something you can just walk up like oh they're about halfway through the elephant bar deadlift let me just catch the good part because there's thousands of people mobbed around like yes if you if you try and do that you will see nothing and you'll be so far away you don't get that feeling. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:46 So we've got to figure something out. Yeah, we do have to. TBD. We do have an open powerlifting stat of the week. Did you want to run down that here? I like those. For those of you that don't know, oftentimes on the podcast here we do a weekly stat of the week that the open powerlifting guys put together for us. They use the power of their enormous database did they pass uh one million one million entries one million entries that seems hard to believe that is a lot yeah if you looked
Starting point is 00:42:15 at if that was in a list that's a i mean it is it is in a list somewhere yeah i mean that in layman terms it's an excel file with a million rows that's nuts yeah it's hard to comprehend so they and that's all volunteer work that has yeah i made that happen i think sometimes the computer does some of the work but i think a surprising amount of it requires people to be entering this yeah and so they use that massively powerful database that they've created to provide us a pretty entertaining stat each week um and here is this week's stat it's similar but different than last week's stat last week's stat we looked at uh the people that have competed in the most meets if you remember it was like the one guy was like almost 200 wasn't it something stupid like that yeah
Starting point is 00:43:03 okay so this week it's these are the longest powerlifting careers in our database. As in times from first meet to last meet. Yep, that means that if someone's first meet was in 1990 and their most recent meet was in 2010, they would have a 20-year career. So men, do you want to guess? Here again, let me check quick. You won't know any of these names. They listed the top five men.
Starting point is 00:43:27 First, what do you think the longest is? It's got to be somewhere around 45 years. I'll tell you this. The fifth longest is 47 years and one month. Okay. 58 years? 53 years and four months for Mike Cross. And he lifts in the 56 to 60 kilogram weight class.
Starting point is 00:43:48 So Mike Cross is not a large. Wow. And I think what they're saying there is all his meets have been between 56 and 60 kilogram weight class. It's consistent. Yeah. 53 years, then it goes John Welch, 49. Like, is he still competing? I don't have that. I don't have start and end dates. Damn, 53 years, that it goes John Welch, 49. Like, is he still competing? I don't have that.
Starting point is 00:44:06 I don't have start and end dates. Damn, 53 years, that's a long time. Yeah. That would mean, so how many years do we have in it? Four? Is that right? So we have about 50 to go, so that would put us at when I'm 82, and that would be in the year 2069.
Starting point is 00:44:26 And we'll have flying cars. I'll be dead by then. I would just about, if I had to bet money on that. Unless you get that CBD oil. That's true. I mean, if I got the inflammation down. Yeah, you don't know what science could do with CBD oil between now and then. You could live forever at that point. Science could take CBDd oil to a whole nother level places that aren't
Starting point is 00:44:48 it's not that something else will be created that will be it's that cbd will the cbd technology will be even herbstrong will be it'll just be the nfl presented by herbstrong okay women's that was men's, I guess. That was all men's. Women's, it's not as long. I'll give you that. 40. 38 years, nine months for Susan Elwine.
Starting point is 00:45:14 That's still crazy impressive. Yeah. The number five would be Jenny Hunter with 35 years, so they're 35 to 38. Man. Those are long. Those people are dedicated. Yeah. They love power. Yeah. that's no doubt about that i guess i suppose they could have done a meet she could have done a meet 38 years ago
Starting point is 00:45:32 and done a meet this should get back into that yeah yeah maybe they're not that dedicated when i was 14 yeah let me get back into that right that's that is a possibility too i guess we don't know the number of meets there yeah uh interesting yeah so that's the open power lifting stat of the week as presented on the massonomics podcast thank you open power lifting team for another sensational stat of the week got my brain juices flowing keep them coming um what do we got next on the old docket the proverbial docket? We have a few things on here. I don't know if we have anything for them, though. We do have a best Instagram slash YouTube comment of the week.
Starting point is 00:46:13 We do. Are you ready for this one? I'm ready. Hit me with it. Okay. Are you familiar with our Masonomics rookie card series? I think I've seen a couple of them. If you haven't, check out hashtag Massonomics rookie card.
Starting point is 00:46:25 Yep. This is on Chris Weiss' rookie card. It came out maybe about a week ago. Fun fact on that, I didn't even realize that at the time he was in high school. At the time. And he had a 700-pound deadlift. Okay, I didn't understand. I didn't know if I was understanding that correctly when I saw that.
Starting point is 00:46:42 But he was in high school when that happened? Yes. didn't know if i was understanding that correctly when i saw that but that he was in high school when that happened yes his because uh there was a that was a direct response of chris's on there to someone else that uh someone said well someone from the open power lifting team was wanting to make they didn't have the meat in their database and and he responded uh it was a meet i did in high school i'm not even sure what the fed was something like pscpa he's from pennsylvania so it's some pennsylvania thing so he said i was in high school his numbers were this is raw with i think not even knee sleeves 565 squat 370 bench and 700 deadlift for 1635 like the 700 deadlift is really crazy in high school yeah i mean a 565 squat and 370 bench are pretty crazy.
Starting point is 00:47:26 Those are both very impressive, too, but the deadlift is the real outlier. Yeah, right. It makes sense why he's deadlifted 950 pounds. I mean, still, actually, though, the fact that he still put 200 and some on that since then is also. He deadlifted 700 pounds in high school. 700 pounds is, like, at the pinnacle of my strength for working on this for years, and I'm in my 30s, and I've hit that once. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:47:52 Like he did that in high school. That just, again, points back to the fact that some people are going to be so much better at powerlifting than you no matter what you do like there's just literally nothing you can do to be as good as some people are destined to be at it yep a 565 squat is you know that's like that's doesn't you don't see everyone very many people do that no especially high school that's what doesn't make sense about it no i mean i could just go talk in circles and go on about that forever how it doesn't make any sense to me but i gotta get to the to the point the best uh comment of the week i don't normally
Starting point is 00:48:36 call out the names on best comment of the week but this one just has to be called out because he's he's had so many comments that are worthy of making best instagram slash youtube comment of the week that it's time that people know at the power turtle for those of you that aren't familiar with best instagram slash youtube comment of the week it's normally a that title is sarcastic we reserve this for the most idiotic comment of the week most times his comment on the post was i better say one other part at the bottom of the rookie cards i we usually write what they're what the lifters best total is to date so you can see where they've gotten from their first meet and r says uh chris we
Starting point is 00:49:15 best total to date is 2100 pounds so at the at the power turtle comment is 100% not facetious. He's making a serious comment. It says, open powerlifting says his best total is 2,099.9, not over 2,100. So two things there. No one claimed it was over 2,100. We claimed it was 2,100. And to get there, we rounded up 0.1 pounds. One-tenth of a pound. Open power lifting, and I indeed, trust me, believe me on these,
Starting point is 00:49:49 I check open power lifting. I talk to the lifter and have them tell me what their best is, and I also check open power lifting because I certainly know that as soon as we put something out wrong, someone catches it immediately. So this is not a situation where we didn't do our homework and we put something that was wrong. This is a situation where we saw it was 2,099.9 pounds and called it 2,100 because. Because who would be that concerned about 0.1?
Starting point is 00:50:20 We're not even talking about a world record or anything. Right. Yeah. I mean, as a percentage basis, what's 0.1 of 2,000 pounds? And when you're talking about the amount of plates required to add up to 2,100 pounds, even calibrated, I would bet 99 times out of 100, there is going to be at least a difference of one-tenth of a pound. That's probably pretty fair to assume. I could do the math, but the percentage that a tenth of a pound is of 2,100 pounds would be a very small-ass percentage.
Starting point is 00:50:56 And I bet it's outside the tolerance of even calibrated plates. Probably, yes. Yeah. So I guess. And it's just like what leads someone to think they need to go on and make that comment and not be joking. To let the world know they're upset about someone rounding up someone else's total by 0.1 pounds. It's just people get butt hurt in powerlifting. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:51:21 And it's a jealousy thing. Well, and this person has a very comparable total in a comparable weight class so that's where it comes from someone that's not you know doesn't isn't it's going to come from someone that's kind of threatened by uh personally threatened by it's a jealousy thing yeah right definitely and at the open power Turtle has a history of making ridiculously stupid comments on our posts. And he doesn't even follow us, but he searches out our posts. He lurks, that's for sure.
Starting point is 00:51:53 And we're at a crossroads of if we block him or not, but it also provides good stuff for our best comment of the week. And I could see him being a repeat guy on here, so it might be fun to revisit that he made the best comment of the week. So will we see a turn around here, or will it keep going? So we're not asking you to go out and seek this guy out and ridicule him.
Starting point is 00:52:22 He probably doesn't deserve that. But I would say keep your eye on the comments for his comments. That's the takeaway here. We don't ever want anyone to go harassing. Right, right. Because then you're part of the problem too. Right. Now you're going to end up in this for the wrong reason.
Starting point is 00:52:37 But just keep your eye out and laugh. And then you can join us in laughing when you see it. Yeah. Because you will see it again. I promise you will see it again. Yep. Probably something that involves heavy lifting or there will be a call out on. I wish I could remember some of the other examples from him, but there's been some good ones.
Starting point is 00:52:55 Yeah. We don't need to get more into it. No, no. So do we – I guess moral of the story is never, ever, ever, for any reason, do anything that would ever involve ever raising someone's total by 0.1 pounds. That's where people get you. Yes, that's where people will get you. We do have a good slate of underrated, overrated, but we also have a few reviews.
Starting point is 00:53:19 Do you think we should hit that? People do like it if we save underrated, overrated for last. Do you think we should hit the podcast reviews first yep let's do it okay i think i've got uh three good reviews to read read off here today um okay first review title of strength is never a weakness five out of five stars and this is from shane gray however limited their knowledge on pop culture is uh i still like listening to this podcast because they talk about Instagram powerlifting, which is a very rare subject that I find fascinating. That's a lifter and a fan of IG.
Starting point is 00:53:51 Thank you. Someone gets it. Also, I'm biased because being born and raised in Southern California, we have our fingers on film, music, and TV. So Midwesterners and such can seem to lack hard knowledge of pop culture. I don't think I'm that far out. He's criticizing our knowledge on pop culture. Man.
Starting point is 00:54:09 And that's from Shane Gray. He even signed the bottom of it. Well, Mr. SoCal. Okay. All your hipness and in the know. I don't know. This isn't tooting our own horn, but in other reviews, we've been called the TMZ of powerlifting.
Starting point is 00:54:25 So I don't know. You take that to the bank, I guess. We have the pulse on something. I don't know what it is. You don't want to know what that is. Great podcast. Five out of five stars from Sarister M.
Starting point is 00:54:38 This is an awesome podcast. If you're interested in powerlifting or strongman, it's funny and really informative. However, after hearing how much they like LaCroix, I decided to try it and was hugely disappointed to find that it tasted like someone ate a bunch of fruit and then burped in my water bottle. Hey, we didn't say it was good.
Starting point is 00:54:58 We just like to talk about it. Five stars for podcasting, zero stars for choice of beverage. All right. I like that analogy of someone stars for choice of beverage. All right. I like that analogy of someone ate a bunch of fruit and burped in my water bottle. I'm excited to have a LaCroix after this. God, they described it so perfectly. My mouth is watering.
Starting point is 00:55:17 Okay. Last one. Short one, but a very good one as well. Five out of five stars. Title is, A.K.A aka last week in the life of larry and this is from this week was no exception no no we stayed true to this review uh this is from guaca floca flame good name yeah he said one word to describe this podcast pamplemousse pamplemousse yeah pamplemuse. Yeah. Pamplemuse. I like it.
Starting point is 00:55:45 So that's our podcast reviews. One other quick note as I'm just looking at as my phone flipping through things, Massanomics is one of the sponsors of the very first ever USPA meet in South Dakota. It'll be called the Black Hills Classic. That's on June 1, 2019 in Rapid City, South Dakota. That's on June 1st, 2019 in Rapid City, South Dakota. Squat to Depth is behind that meet, and we're also getting to be a little bit of a part of that.
Starting point is 00:56:11 Yeah, yeah. So that's pretty cool. Yeah, very cool. Pretty cool. Pretty cool. Okay. Where are we at on time? We got time for under?
Starting point is 00:56:21 56 minutes. All right, perfect. I couldn't have pictured a better number for you to say right there. 56 is the right number. We have an hour left in the program. That's the secret of episode 150 is they're all going to be two hours from now on. It's a double feature. Yeah. We haven't been doing this enough.
Starting point is 00:56:37 We're going to go to two hours each week. Here we go. Okay. Underrated and overrated. Tommy, let me ask you this. Are you familiar with underrated, overrated? Well, again, I was thinking about it this week, and I was like, I don't know if I actually do have a handle on it.
Starting point is 00:56:51 Well, it's been a little while since we've done it now. Because you always say the rules. I'm like, yeah, I got it. But I'm probably kind of not listening, to be honest, most of the time when you say them. Well, for your benefit and everyone else's, and even my own, because it gets confusing, I know. This is lightning round questions. Some of them are pop culture, and then we also mix in some lifting-related topics at times.
Starting point is 00:57:10 Sometimes it gets lighter on the lifting-related and heavier on the pop culture, but that's okay. There's no rule in underrated or overrated that it has to be lifting-related or that a certain percentage of them have to be lifting-related. It's just that they get mixed in there from time to time. See, that's the mixture thing that kind of throws me off sometimes the mixing of it yeah i get used to being in one category and then i get stuck right that's rule a i would say rule 1a or you know that's rule that's rule one rule 1a is that um the questions are lightning round The answers do not have to be.
Starting point is 00:57:46 You, as the responder, have your choice of answering as briefly as you'd like or as long as an answer is you want. And I did remember that rule this week, but sometimes I get that one next time too. Well, we'll keep at it. Okay, underrated or overrated? Old school pencils that require a pencil sharpener. Ooh, I think those are underrated. There's something about sharpening the old pencil and getting to work.
Starting point is 00:58:09 I mean, personally, I don't do it just because I don't have time to waste on that. Do you use pencils? I don't, no. I should use more, but I would prefer, like if I'm going to be drawing out plans and things, I would prefer to be using a wood pencil than the clicky pencil, but I don't want to sharpen the wood pencil. Do you have a pencil sharpener? No. So I use pens.
Starting point is 00:58:30 But you're still saying underrated. I think they're underrated too, just something as a – Like a good old-fashioned number two pencil? Like going up in grade school and you've got to go up on the wall. You're just like, oh, I've got to waste some time. Let's see how long I can stand at the pencil sharpener. The kids you had in your class that would go up there and like, they're just killing time just making it go or the or the little handheld one that you could see how long you get the pencil shaving to go down yeah like you get the longest pencil
Starting point is 00:58:53 shaving and also yeah the game where you get the shortest pencil possible because there was always that one that one asshole kid that was writing with a pencil that was one inch long like also do you ever remember you actually using one of those pencils so much that it got that i never did no they always are like gone before you get yeah basically past like sharpening them a few times yeah also a pen how often in your life have you used a pen to i i have done this multiple times i buy i make it a habit i buy the pilot g2 pens oh yeah the uh i think i get the black not yeah the black i don't get the super fine i get I have done this multiple times. I buy, I make it a habit, I buy the Pilot G2 pens. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:59:26 I think I get the black. Yeah, the black. I don't get the super fine. I get the fine. And I'll buy like a three-pack. And in my home office, even at my last job I would do this, I would bring them because I like having a nice, I hate the shitty pens that feel like you're writing on paper by engraving it.
Starting point is 00:59:42 Like it's just ink on the pen. I just want to write on it and i want to be smooth and look fine so i would buy them and i would be like oh i'm gonna see how i'm gonna do this and at my last job i had several pens that i used in their entirety and actually just like a month ago i finished up a pilot g2 in its entirety what's that what how would you describe that feeling when you're kind of like at first it's kind of like oh but it's kind of like i did that yeah like man the idea is something the idea is that this pen produced kind of like, ah. It's kind of like, I did that. It's kind of a sense of adoption. Like, man, the idea is that this pen produced kind of feels cool, actually. It's like, I didn't, like, this pen, I did not lose it the entire time.
Starting point is 01:00:12 And I wasn't just, like, sitting coloring in pages. Like, it was just, nope, just drawing lines somehow took out a whole pen. Pilot G2 is a good pen, though. It is. It's pretty popular. A lot of people might say this is a pen. A nice sweet spot of price and performance yeah that's true uh kind of like a masonomic shirt it i mean you could almost say it's hit the sweet spot of uh i mean really yeah it's almost a giveaway on the price part though that's the performance it really blows away most things
Starting point is 01:00:41 but the it's not really even yeah it's not really a sweet price it's like way in the consumers it's in their favor for sure that's true so the old school pencil that requires sharpness the wooden pencil you say underrated okay for sure underrated or overrated game of thrones um i don't watch it um have you watched it i have seen like the first i have seen the first season um so i have i have an idea of what it's about. I do think it's probably underrated. People love to freak out about it. Well, that's why I asked. That is the worst thing about Game of Thrones, Game of Thrones fans. It's like almost with anything.
Starting point is 01:01:15 When something's good, the worst thing about anything that's good is the people that like it because they make you not like it because it's like whenever a group of people like something, it's usually annoying to be one of those people and uh i just think people love to be like oh i love i love fiction stuff yeah it doesn't seem like i'm not the type of person that you would think would like that well it's like it's a really well the best produced show in the world of course everyone would like it you like a like a multi or any a show with an enormous scope that has millions of dollars of production value and pumped into it and all types. Okay, wow, you're such a weird person for liking a well-crafted story.
Starting point is 01:01:55 My thing is I think I'm up to date on Game of Thrones. I've seen them all. And I think it's – here's my answer on the underrated overrated. I think it's really good, and I would say overrated. Would you? And I think it's like one of my – I think it's like as good of a show as it is on TV, and I would say it's overrated because it's just ridiculous. The hype. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:02:16 Oh, my God. It's six months away. Yeah. Yes, that's what makes me say overrated. But at the same time, I really like it. But you do have to realize, though, for how many millions of people that watch it, that is the same time i i really like it but you do have to realize though for how many millions of people that watch it there's that is the minority of people that act like that they just they just ruin it for everyone right right like i was like i think tanner watches it
Starting point is 01:02:34 but i don't even know for sure because he doesn't make a big deal about it no right that's like i wouldn't i'm not gonna show up to the gym and be like oh my god did you see the last last episode i can't believe denarius Stormborn unleashed her dragons. Something like that. I think that makes sense. Real fans can. If you're a real one. You'll know.
Starting point is 01:02:54 Okay, so what was your official answer? I said as someone that doesn't watch it, it's probably underrated because I probably should be watching it. It's just at this point, it's really hard to know that I have to strap into 80 hours of my life. Like, God damn. It can go by pretty quick, though. Well, I have no doubt about it.
Starting point is 01:03:11 And I've said that how many times? And I've devoted 80 hours to other shows now at this point. Okay. Underrated or overrated? Steam rooms at gyms. We don't have one at Math and Amish gym. We don't. That's probably good because it would smell probably really bad somehow.
Starting point is 01:03:31 Man, the last gym we went to that had one, I never went, so I would probably have to say it's overrated. I can see how it would be nice, though. I thought as writing that, I was like, I guess I would be interested in seeing if that makes you feel better. It probably would feel good. It's probably overrated, though. You probably don't need it.
Starting point is 01:03:48 It's the fact of, like, the old sweaty men. Steamroom or sauna, though? I was saying steamroom because sauna might be too much for me. I'm not sure. Which one is more intense? Well, isn't it i always forget the difference between them because one is like a more of a dry heat i thought that's a sauna but i might be wrong maybe i'm wrong and maybe i'm getting mixed
Starting point is 01:04:14 around because it makes sense that a steam room right steam is by nature wet yeah um because and like all my life i feel like i was going like when i was younger and went in a sauna, I always thought people were pouring water on the rocks, but I also clearly do remember every time doing that, there was a sign that says don't pour water on the rocks. So I've just been doing it wrong. It was just one of those funny things. Do you like a sauna? I don't really like that. I don't, I don't really care for it. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:04:40 But yeah, I do remember now, actually I was my whole life. I was wrong. We just kids. It's like, Oh, don't pour water on the rocks. Better pour water on the rocks. Yeah. So yeah,, I do remember now. Actually, my whole life I was wrong. We just, kids, it's like, oh, don't pour water on the rocks. Better pour water on the rocks. Yeah. So, yeah, I had that mixed around. Okay.
Starting point is 01:04:50 I'm so overrated. Oh, that's why I agree. Underrated or overrated? Flip-flops. This is two parts. Flip-flops, underrated or overrated? Slides, underrated or overrated? So, oh, there's a distinction.
Starting point is 01:05:03 As someone that just for the first time this past summer made the switch from flip-flops to slides, I think slides are underrated because if I am chilling at home and I need to run outside quick and I don't want to put shoes on but I have socks on, I can get the slides on and go. Whereas slides and flip-flops. But it's still a faux pas. Not even really as much anymore. That. But it's still a faux pas.
Starting point is 01:05:26 Not even really as much anymore. That's not as much of a thing anymore. But whereas with socks and flip-flops, it ain't happening. It's not a thing. I think slides are – well, slides are a thing now, though. I didn't even know that. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Slides are back in now. I mean, a couple of years ago, I was like, slides are underrated. But though. I didn't even know that. Oh, yeah, yeah. Slides are back in now. Okay.
Starting point is 01:05:48 I mean, a couple years ago I was like, oh, slides are underrated. But now it's like it is popular, so maybe you could say slides are overrated. And you know what? Sandals. Sandals are overrated. Screw sandals. I wore flip flops for the first time, I think, when I was in the Army at like 19. And up until then I had never worn one. And it actually took me a little bit for them to stay on my feet
Starting point is 01:06:05 and not feel like they were falling off. I almost had to learn to walk a little bit differently with flip-flops. Yeah, I was definitely the I'm either a shoe guy or nothing. And then I recently switched over to sandals. I like sandals, but I'm just saying they're overrated because people like to freak out. This is the overrate. This should be the real question.
Starting point is 01:06:23 If you live in the midwest women will wear sandals until it is like 10 degrees outside yeah they will also while they're wearing sandals complain about how cold it is which makes no sense at all i would agree it makes no sense and i've worked in offices where people wear wear sandals into work and then complain about how cold the office is while they're wearing sandals and it blows your mind that that is a thing yep but it but it's a thing it is a thing it is a thing so you're saying overrated sandals are overrated wear them but just wear them don't make a thing out of it just rate them appropriately just a game of thrones watch the show don't make a thing about it watch Watch the show. Okay. Underrated or overrated?
Starting point is 01:07:13 Those motivational posters in offices with bold words like team and then a picture of a group skydiving or perseverance and a picture of a needle in a haystack. I mean, you could extend this to those Instagram posts online that say one word and then someone has a 50-paragraph description about how you should feel about their interpretation of that word. They're all incredibly overrated but very needed for society yeah what about those in an office setting like literally where they're trying to like motivate you like you're actually still do that is that still a thing i think so i don't know if i have i don't i don't know if they're present day are any of those at the office place that i work at but i know i have seen them there before i think everyone would look at those and be like oh so overrated but like when people post the inspirational stuff at instagram that is just like the 2010s version of those things from the 90s and the whenever they were it's the same thing yeah and people will like it'll be a time pretty soon to be like oh someone with their motivational quote here we go it hasn't got there yet but it'll come sometime i think yeah it all comes full circle it does
Starting point is 01:08:10 that's underrated overrated thank you for listening for another amazing session of underrated or overrated i think we'll bring it back again next week i think so it's a seems to be a fan favorite i don't really know that i just say that every week if you say it i just say it will become one i just like doing it and i've seen a couple comments about it so i'm going to keep saying that yep it's a fan favorite you just say it enough to prove me wrong prove me wrong um i think that wraps us up for today puts a bow on 150 150 do you think do you think uh we'll make it 150 more? That's a long timeline. That's actually the bigger question because, man, that's a long time. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:08:52 I'd say to make 150 more, it would probably have to become, at some point in time, some bad things would have had to happen in our lives. Right, right. Well, maybe we would have to make some money from it at some point in time. Like direct money straight into the bank account. Not just using it to tell you to go to our website and purchase our apparel that we have for sale. The Lyft hats, the Masanomics hats, the sticker packs. We have two different sticker packs.
