Starting point is 00:02:07 guess i would say it has something to do with maybe a three year mark 3.5 3.5 okay yeah that's this is the 3.5 uh 3.5 3.5 because because it's the the 3.5 year anniversary there i got you something really special here to commemorate this event. Yeah, I like that. This is a gift that I got you to celebrate our three-and-a-half-year podcast anniversary. Tell the people what it is that you've got there. You have to have been at least listening. It's not a J.D. Power & Associates trophy. It's not a J.D. Power & Associates.
Starting point is 00:02:40 It's close. You've had to have listened for at least probably eight episodes now to know what we're talking about here but this would be the vt basmati rice packet and not a packet it's more of like a bowl yeah um wow ready in two minutes delicate and aromatic rice and easy i like that yeah uh serve one as a meal or two as a side. They were on sale on Amazon for the same price that they are at Walmart, which is $1.50 a unit. And Walmart kept being out of stock constantly. So my wife ordered me a box that was about yay big that came.
Starting point is 00:03:22 I mean, it was significantly heavy. Did you have more than 50 in there? There was over 50, yes. Several packages. They come in a case of like that. Are going through like one of these a day right now yep uh two servings per container so you got about 400 calories for the rice here yep but you say this is the real deal yeah you'll have to try it and see what you're you know if i'm blowing smoke or if you uh i'm going to yeah the instructions are below there. But all it really says is poke mini holes in it and microwave for two minutes. Oh, that's it, huh? Yep. Cool.
Starting point is 00:03:52 Dang, I'm excited about this. Maybe you want to warm it up now and just sit here for the whole show and eat. Should I just bring the microwave to the microwave so we can hear it cooking? Yes, for two minutes. Dang. So you'll have to report back maybe next week and yeah i definitely will i definitely will review on vt rice and while you brought that to the party i also brought something in the party here oh well it wouldn't be a party
Starting point is 00:04:16 without something at the party oh parties you exchange gifts yeah and so especially for a three and a half year anniversary it's especially a three andand-a-half-year anniversary. Especially a three-and-a-half-year anniversary. If that's not a reason to celebrate, I don't know what is. So, Tanner, time for the third installment of What's in That Can? All right. Today we are both rocking the Deadlifter koozies. Yeah. Should we get right to it? Yeah, I suppose.
Starting point is 00:04:39 It's that time. And, of course, I sprayed myself in the face again. Got myself, too. and of course i sprayed myself in the face again got myself too um well my first first thing is what's the aromatic doing for you um just just smell i haven't haven't tasted yet i feel like it's beer but like with some citrus scent. Now I took a sip. And see, I don't know my beers very good, but that's how I describe it. It reminds me of maybe like Blue Moon or Boulevard or something like that.
Starting point is 00:05:17 Okay, okay, not a bad guess. Not on the right. You are on a somewhat... I'm talking wheat beers is what it reminds me of. Yep, yep, and where this will probably get a little confusing for you, I actually just grabbed this one out of the fridge, so I don't even completely remember what the whole thing on it. But this is, are you ready for the unveiling here?
Starting point is 00:05:31 Yeah. This is Dots and Loops IPA. So this is an IPA tanner. So we're taking you to the real IPA town, where this one is a little different. Oh, Surly. Yeah, and it is Surly. So if you're not familiar with uh your upper midwest
Starting point is 00:05:46 breweries this is uh i mean it's a pretty big name but i've toured to the surly uh it's really cool isn't it yeah yeah i guess i haven't toured i went to the beer hall and attended that whole thing but um it is a fruity hoppy and bright so it's as far as an ipa goes it doesn't have that hard bitter finish it is somewhat smooth uh but we are at 6.7 percent here tanner so there is a little bit more it's got a little bite to it does have a little bite you know taking you to flavor town a little bit and i guess now that you say that or now that i know what it is that it does taste to me more what it does have more of that bitter yeah it does but um but after what you said it is. It does have more of that bitter bit of it. Yeah, it does. But after my first sip, I really... It is still somewhat mellow, though, as far as...
Starting point is 00:06:27 I mean, you can have an IPA that has a much more strong finish. Well, for me to even suggest, you know, make my guess that I made at the beginning, that certainly says that it's not your... And it did say fruity, something like fruity. Yeah, you can notice those real, real. Those nodes. Those nodes. I love a good node.
Starting point is 00:06:49 Yeah. So that's what we'll be sipping on tonight up in here. I don't know. I really like my IBUs through the roof. Well, this isn't quite. I mean, the IBUs are getting up there. We're going up every week, Tanner. Good.
Starting point is 00:07:02 We'll pump the number up next week. Sometimes I just. Those are rookie numbers. You've got to pump those up. Sometimes I like to just have a chaw of hops in between my lip just because it's not enough. Just to let people know that you are about that hop life. Right, yes. I want people to make sure that they know.
Starting point is 00:07:19 Yeah. Yep, and that is what it's like to be a real beer lover, Tanner. So probably the most important part about what's in that can. Is the style you associate with it. Well, yeah. This is a cool can, though, actually. Yeah, it actually is. It's kind of got the old school, like, 80s circuit board thing going on with it.
Starting point is 00:07:39 Yep. But last week we determined our rating system on what's in the can. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. God, I would have forgot about that already. Okay. So do you remember what the rating system is? Yep. How many J.D. Power & Associates awards we would give it.
Starting point is 00:07:52 Yeah. Out of a five-scale, half awards being allowed. Half awards are allowed, yeah. I think last week I gave that beer a three and a half. Yep. And I gave it four J.D. Power & Associates awards. I think I would give this a, again, torn between three and a half yep and i gave it four yeah i think i would give this a i'm again torn between three and a half and four um
Starting point is 00:08:10 just because four seems like a high number to be giving something i don't just want to give those out willy-nilly you know but some things sometimes things are four i'm actually going to go with three and a half again on this i'm going to go with three and a half so you're rating it the same as uh yeah i'm i'm tough on my ratings yeah a five is going to be almost unachievable four and a half is going to be very rare and four will be uncommon yeah i gave uh last week's a four that was a that beer last week was much more up my alley. And even just after knowing this is an IPA, it makes the second sip. The first sip was pretty good. The second sip after knowing it was an IPA was a little less good for me. It just ruined your night.
Starting point is 00:08:55 So I give, but it's still, that being said, it being a real IPA, it's pretty good. I like, this is something I would like to have one or two of and that's it i would not want the thing is is if you drink like seven or eight of them your taste buds don't work anymore and so then it doesn't matter the limits of humanity don't apply to you anymore so you can just do anything then so that's always an interesting it also feels like you're drying like your body is dehydrated itself like starting in your tongue like it's your mouth is puckering all the way through yeah like it's just been any bit of moisture has been yeah dissolved i also don't want to fall into the trap of always giving something like at least a three jd powder associates award you know like
Starting point is 00:09:39 what would it have to have prestigious it is a prestigious yeah you don't just throw around jd power and associates yeah yeah like it's not just some this isn't chevy over yeah it's not Because it is a prestigious... It is a prestigious... Yeah, you don't just throw around J.D. Power and Associates Awards. Yeah, yeah. It's not just some... This isn't Chevy over here. Yeah, it's not... You just assumed you're getting three. Right. It's not how this works.
Starting point is 00:09:52 Yeah, you got to work for it. See, I'm torn between two and a half or three. Well, when in doubt, go with the lower one. I guess I'll give it to... But to me, to clarify, two and a half is not... That's not saying I don't like it. It's just... I mean, it's still getting two and a half is not that's not saying i don't like it it's just i mean it's still getting two and a half jd power and associates awards it's not best in class but it's it's in class it's probably more like a toyota right yes yes
Starting point is 00:10:15 something that they get because they're not talking about it no no they probably have actual good things to talk about is the reason why like we actually like innovative room full of trophies we have a good business model so we don't rely on our uh jd power associates two guys that don't own toyotas no but i think it is pretty wide widely accepted that toy are in through business school i'm sure we did a few uh yeah uh case studies on toyota yeah all of their 5s and yeah kaizen and yeah uh do they do sigma yeah all that stuff your black belt lean manufacturing yeah toyota did it toyota did it first now look at them what do they need jd power and associates awards for your your awards are no good here but yeah all that being said, I don't own a Toyota and probably don't intend to.
Starting point is 00:11:06 But yeah, we'll see. Anything's possible. But I do give it two and a half of the J.D., P., and A. awards. When you're tight with them, you can say that, right? Yeah. J.D., P., and A.s. Yeah. I wonder what J.D. stands for.
Starting point is 00:11:21 Someone should look into that. Yeah. It's funny. The first time we talked about jd power and associates awards i made the comment that it's funny that middle class fancy has never posted a meme about jd power and associates awards they have now haven't they did that week oh they did yeah that later that week like the week that our episode came out they posted a jd power and associates awards and we got tagged in it like 10 times like massonomics did it first tanner a few people have commented and because we probably borrowed a few
Starting point is 00:11:50 ideas from uh middle class fancy oh yeah it's just but i mean i would say they're also their ideas aren't exclusive to that no that's very true too but a couple people have made the tried to make the conspiracy theory connection that us and uh middle class fancy are somehow uh tied more closely together than what we would let on i wish yeah i think they make their living just off of the account so i think so but you can make your living just purely off of an instagram account you got something going for you that's we're working on yeah we're we're trying yeah so that's our uh what's in that can segment amazing um tanner i have something that's really really been bugging me and i i feel like maybe i'm one of the only people that ever have this happen to them
Starting point is 00:12:38 and that is and it just started happening to me in like the last year or two. Gout? No, but good guess. What is gout? Is it on your feet? It's like shingles, isn't it? Yeah, I'm not sure. I mean, my wife would 100% know, but we'll never find out, I guess. That's one of those things you don't really know because you don't really want to know. No, no, I don't.
Starting point is 00:13:01 I have done this multiple times now where I am eating, just eating, doing my thing, and I bite the inside of my mouth so hard that blood starts pouring out of my mouth. Now, I've done this twice in the last six months, and it basically shuts down your meal on the spot because, one, I have blood pouring out of my mouth. And then not only does it shut down your meal on the spot, it pretty have blood pouring out of my mouth and then not only does it shut down your meal on the spot it pretty much shuts down eating for the next week and a half because you're just praying to god every meal you don't rip that thing back open and then anything that touches the most painful thing in the world now does this ever happen to
Starting point is 00:13:38 you um not that as much i bite my tongue on occasion when i'm eating and that usually that doesn't really bleed very much but i do have this feeling where i have to feel with my fingers to make sure that i did not bite off part of my tongue and where it hurts to the point where i'm like this is the worst thing that's ever happened yeah i used to do that one a lot more now that i think about it's been a long time since i bit my tongue hard but yeah it used to be the same thing where it would just be bleeding yeah because you chomped down so hard i haven't done i can't recall doing the inside of my mouth and it's always like towards my front of my lip here and the thing is once you bite it it like bubbles up and then it just is so much more susceptible to being bit again and again and again uh but yeah
Starting point is 00:14:18 the last time it happened to me like six months ago i think that week i lost like six pounds because i basically couldn't eat for the whole week. Oh, so it lasted for that long? Oh, yeah, because I bit it. And then the day I bit it, I later that night bit it again. And I thought, oh, okay, I'm done. I'm done. This is it. And then the next day I bit it one more time.
Starting point is 00:14:36 And at that point, I didn't know if I needed stitches or what. And that last time you were probably like, no. Oh, I was like ready to just throw my food. And my, every time it happens, my wife thinks like my teeth are falling out because I'm like, oh, I instantly go like into this panic mode. And then I have to be like, no, no, it just, I bit my, my mouth again. Yeah. But yeah, it's so, it happened last night and I'm just, you know, I'm on the road to
Starting point is 00:15:03 recovery now. Yeah. I'm in that comeback. Hashtag road to recovery. Hashtag road to recovery. so that's uh that's the life i'm living yeah i'm on the hashtag kneehab hashtag kneehab rehab uh you're talking about the mouth and you mentioned that your teeth falling out have i ever told you the story about the time that almost all of my you know at least five of my teeth got knocked out no yeah uh so this was uh we could go back in our way back machine we got to go back
Starting point is 00:15:31 10 years next month 10 years 10 years next month so it was october 2009 okay yep and uh imagine you're in uh so i'm trying to think okay so lil wayne's probably playing in the background i remember you know i remember lady gaga poker face was big lady gaga was definitely playing in the background my mom she was probably behind the scenes working on um bad romance just getting ready to drop that one on everyone the black eyed peas were still doing their thing all the time what's the black eyed peas girl's name fergie fergie fergie was being all fergalicious yeah she was still fergalicious back then okay so the scene is set all right the the time is frame of the scent the location uh i'll take you to a place called kuwait naval base in southern kuwait right there on vacation yeah
Starting point is 00:16:20 it was right on the persian gulf so it Gulf. So there's always like this balmy breeze that came off the Persian Gulf. Ocean breeze. In actuality, it never rained in the year that I was there, but it would be so... And what was the name of the resort you were at here? Kuwait Naval Base. Oh, okay. Kuwait Naval Base. And I was there for a year, so it was a hell of a vacation.
Starting point is 00:16:41 But it never rained, but it would be so humid that the tin roofs would... Would sweat? Well, it would like... Water would run down them. Really? Like there'd be so much condensation. See, I didn't think it... I mean, it makes sense because there's a body of water there, but I just never assumed it
Starting point is 00:16:59 got that humid ever there. No, like if you go to like north farther into like Iraq, I think it is very dry. Well, yeah, it makes sense because they're off. But I still even thought on the ocean there, it wouldn't get that humid. No, it was, especially in the summer, it was at times very humid. Not all the time, but I remember the times really well that were really humid. But, you know, it was a wet heat, but it was only like 110, 115 degrees. So it wasn't too bad.
Starting point is 00:17:21 Well, yeah, yeah. It's not, I mean, it's just a wet heat. It's not a dry heat. But anyway, so that's where we're at and we would have these basketball tournaments there these like four on four basketball tournaments kind of these full court but not really a full is like maybe three quarters the length of a court uh and they would get pretty intense of course when you get a bunch of 20-some-year-old guys with nothing else fun to do. With nothing to look forward to besides the basketball tournaments. Yeah, but the basketball tournaments.
Starting point is 00:17:50 And it would be also like where you're at, it's not just the people that you're used to being with. There's a bunch of different units, like people from different parts of the country that you're there. And when you say country, you mean America? Our country, yeah. Like other naval units or army units from all over the country. So you're all there at the same place for like a year, and you see these people, you eat lunch with them at times and stuff. But most of the time you stick to your people that you actually are with
Starting point is 00:18:15 and work with. So there's like us versus them big time. Kind of a gang thing going on. Yeah. Yes, for sure. And so we're in a basketball game, and there there is a we get a fast break with the ball and i'm uh out in front and someone passes me the ball out out in front and it's kind it's clear from so you got the fast break yep yep and i'm going up for a layup uh right-handed layup on
Starting point is 00:18:44 the right hand side and someone from another team runs you know they're like you can picture this thing where someone's like sprinting trying to track it down and but he didn't go to block the shot he just like as i as i'm up for a layup the old undercut yeah undercut me like big time to where i teeter-tottered where my face landed directly on like my face my body all landed right behind my face which landed on the ground so your face broke your fall it did big time quite literally and uh it took and i i know that i had a concussion like i did we didn't do things for the concussion at the time, but there's, yeah, even in 2009, even are slightly different than what they,
Starting point is 00:19:29 it is like right now. It's a, it's crazy. I'm 10 years ago. Like concussions like, Oh, you got a concussion. Okay. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:33 Like, like when we played high school football, people, yeah, people get concussions. It's like, Oh, all right.
Starting point is 00:19:38 Yeah. All right. You had your time. Get back. Right. Um, but it wasn't like that then. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:42 Concussion culture has really come a long ways. But so I, I remember when I got up, I remember going to my hands and knees. And this was like underneath the hoop where it kind of got gravelly. We were on like a sport court thing. But I was kind of like had gone underneath behind the hands through the gravel because I was positive that my teeth, like my front four top teeth were no longer in my mouth because like my mouth was pouring blood and it felt like, like to my, with my tongue moving around or even feeling like my hands, yeah, it felt like there was nothing there. Uh, my teeth hadn't fallen out of my mouth but i thought that they did and they looked and said no your teeth are
Starting point is 00:20:28 there and where we're at there is not a dentist yeah so they have to uh take me to uh another base that's i can't remember maybe it's like 25 miles away but it's not as simple as just like getting in the car like yeah we're gonna head down yeah right right they have you know you have to like get these this paperwork filled out and all this crap and clearance yes yes and this is at the this is in the middle of the night too and we normally aren't driving around at night all that much uh so and i was loopy at the time i was also in like an extreme amount of pain because this was like, maybe I'm not even selling it enough,
Starting point is 00:21:09 but it hurt really bad. It wasn't like, oh, okay, my teeth are still in there. The zero to 10 pain scale, this is up there closer to a 10. One of the worst things that I've ever done. 30 times more painful than tearing my ACL or anything like that. So we get to the dentist.
Starting point is 00:21:28 It's like an army dentist or whatever. And have you ever done the dental x-rays where you stand up and they like put a thing in your, a metal thing in your mouth with a plastic thing around it and you have to bite down on it. Now I don't stand up. Now you just lay in the chair. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:41 I guess that's how the most recent one I did. You just lay in the chair. But they put that metal thing in there shoot out on it and they yeah and they want me to bite down on and that's when my teeth felt like they are literally applesauce and i like we struggled with that for probably 30 minutes where i was like no i cannot bite down on this so anyways my front four top teeth were all loose to the point where they could manipulate them around wherever they had to. They had to put braces on my top teeth to try to get them to set in place. Really?
Starting point is 00:22:13 And they weren't positive if they would stay alive or if they would all die. Oh, I think they were dead teeth. So then the week later, or maybe it was even just a few days later, I had to go get root canals in all four of those front teeth. Which, if you've never had a root canal. I haven't, but everyone says it's the worst thing. Especially in these front teeth where it feels like they're like... Drilling into your face. Yes, that is what it feels like, honestly.
Starting point is 00:22:39 And I had to do that in the middle of Kuwait City by not someone that's in the military. It was by a Kuwait dentist. So it was a really nice office, probably nicer than most dentists I've been to here. And it wasn't like, he was probably better than most, you know, in all honesty,
Starting point is 00:22:55 but it was awful. And I, that they left that brace on for those braces on for, I don't remember how long, but to this day, my, most of those teeth are not in the same position. Really? To this day, I still feel those teeth with my tongue and always notice how they're crooked in comparison to what they were like before.
Starting point is 00:23:15 Wow. Yeah. That's worse than biting inside your teeth. I figured that's a good story, and I just thought about that. I remember you saying something about getting undercut playing basketball in the Army, and I didn't know what went with that story, but wow. Yeah, and my teeth did all survive, but just a little more crooked than they were before. Yeah, that's nuts.
Starting point is 00:23:33 Luckily, I don't care about that anymore. And also, the Army just doesn't allow basketball anymore because of that, right? Well, I don't think I played any more basketball for the rest of that year after that. I was like, well, that is no longer fun for me. Jeez, yeah. It was also in the championship game of the tournament yeah well there's a lot on the line then i think we lost then and you know they finished without me but i well yeah i mean they're because they had dirty also it was like uh i forgot to mention this it was like a bench
Starting point is 00:23:59 clearing oh is it yeah yeah it was yeah it, uh, not just the player's bench, but like the people watching the game, we're all like jumping up and nobody did anything, of course. Cause that's probably the way that goes. Like 95% of the time people know you're there. Yeah. Yeah. Everyone's trying to be tough. And I was like, I'm not trying to be tough. I'm trying to like not swallow my teeth. Trying to keep this together man yeah wow that's a good story for the day yeah i guess i'm all out of scar stories i was gonna say um do you ever burn your mouth really bad on pizza pizza does that more than any other food doesn't it that is the only other mouth injury ever yet is pizza and it was i also went through a stretch where it's like i
Starting point is 00:24:45 don't know what you like the pizza comes out of the oven it's like it needs to be in my mouth now yeah and instantly you're like instantly like that was the wrong decision and you can just feel it just wrecking you yeah and then you know it's bad when shortly after eating the skin is already peeling off of your you can feel it hanging down because you've burned it that bad yeah i think i have wise stuff it's been a while since i've done that so i think i've matured to the point where that's not an issue anymore right so you know we all grow live and learn some of us bite our cheeks and burn our mouths others lose our teeth and basketball injuries it's all learning experience it is it is. Do we want to talk about anything? Anything in particular today?
Starting point is 00:25:29 I thought this was a story where we relive old sports. Our old sports history. Yep. Like high school sports, especially. We need to probably get into that. That's what people want to know the most about. This is our high school sports. I think they say when you first meet someone, the best icebreakers high school sports stories telling them how good you were
Starting point is 00:25:49 and how good your team and they say the longer ago it was the more relevant it actually is so just keep that in mind when you're meeting meeting new people out there in the world it is a good advice to probably know that if you bring up high school sports and the other person brings up college they're just a dick because they're trying to rub their college elitism on you. Oh, you played college? Yeah, no, no. High school sports were the only sport that ever mattered. No.
Starting point is 00:26:11 We were going to talk about the Arnold Strongman that went on this last weekend, right? The one that was... Yeah. They call it Arnold Europe, but it was in Spain, right? Barcelona? Barcelona, I believe. So that went on this last Saturday. When you're listening to this, it'll be about a week ago.
Starting point is 00:26:27 And it was actually, competitor-wise, it was a huge competition in both number of competitors and quality of competitors. It was deep. The Arnold Classic in Ohio does not have this deep of a field. World's Strongest Man doesn't have this deep of a no does not have this deep of a field world's strongest man doesn't have this deep of a field i don't think that's this is you know quality of talent here is on the same level of world's strongest man finals or the arnold columbus ohio like there
Starting point is 00:26:55 there's some differences you know thor wasn't here yeah yeah and there's some names missing but um just they're made up by other big names that you know like yeah just looking to the list uh you know if you follow the sport at all there's probably only a couple names where you're like hmm i'm not sure if i know that one where on any given day a strongman you know competition can have half the names like you might not be familiar with them but this was a pretty deep field for sure and there was 17 lifters i think there there was 18 and one guy didn't compete maybe, but there were 17 competitors in there. And that's a big field too.
Starting point is 00:27:31 And it was a particularly interesting one for us because Massonomics lifter, Big Brad, Night Moves, Night Soul. Big Brad, Night Moves, kind of fat, kind of strong, Night Soul. Night Soul. Got to get the name right there. Yes. And who he's been on the podcast three times was competing in this. This was his first professional show, I think.
Starting point is 00:27:54 Because, like everyone knows, after you do three Masonomics appearances, you qualify for Arnold Spain. That's when you get to go for your professional Arnold. There's multiple roads to get there. So there's a few people that have done two Masonomics podcasts that are really trying to get in that third one so they can compete at the arnold spain yep and brad was brad was the one to step up to get the three in so congratulations but this this was his first pro show i think right i think it was his first, what you consider his first show. He won USS Nationals super heavyweight this year. So because of winning that, he was automatically invited to this,
Starting point is 00:28:32 and I think that kind of paid his entryway and helped him get there and stuff. So pretty sweet experience because, you know, just some of the people competing in this, Brian Shaw, Mateus Kielkowski, Mikhail Shivlikov, JF Caron, Belshak, Jerry Pritchett.
Starting point is 00:28:51 Jerry Pritchett. You said Brian Shaw, right? Martins couldn't compete. He was going to, but he was injured, so he wasn't competing in this one. Novikov. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:01 Heinle. Yep. Yeah, so some big names. Right. Some big names. So he got to compete on the same. It wasn't actually on a stage because actually by the looks of it, they do not do a great job. It looks like it's in a gym.
Starting point is 00:29:14 Yeah. It looks like the most low key. It was kind of in a shitty little corner of a concrete floor with no space. Yeah. Like it looks like around here what would be referred to as just an armory. Yeah. Like that's what that is. Yes. That is exactly what it looks like around here what we refer to as just an armory. Yeah. Like that's what that is. Yes, that is exactly what it looked like.
Starting point is 00:29:26 Yeah. Which that's kind of disappointing, I think, a little bit for these people. Yeah. Is that really, you know, if Brian Shaw comes, that's where you're going to put them? Yeah, it's weird. It's just an odd setup when you see it, but maybe that's just how things are in Europe. I don't know. Right, right.
Starting point is 00:29:44 But anyways, though. So, all right. You're looking at the competitors. It's a stacked field. No doubt about that. And then when we look at the events, we have the log lift, the super yoke,
Starting point is 00:29:56 farmer's carry, deadlift, arm over arm pull. So kind of you're, you know, you're nothing unusual. Yeah. There's a deadlift from the floor.
Starting point is 00:30:04 There's a log lift. There's no Atlas stones. Yeah. No Atlas stones. But besides that, I mean, pretty arm over arm isn't super common. No, that's probably the one wildish card. Otherwise, it's pretty straightforward. So we probably don't need to run through every one of these.
Starting point is 00:30:20 But log lift, what was it? Was it like three? 400 pounds. Oh, it was 400 like three 400 pounds oh that's 400 kilos okay so yeah big big log big log and of course matthias whips out five yeah he won that event yeah brian got three i remember which is a little surprising that he only got three i think a note on the whole day is that brian shaw yeah and i think we'll probably discuss that more at the end here of you know kind of where he fits on this whole puzzle but yeah so he had three um trying to see the other big ones uh next close would be four with shimla kov had
Starting point is 00:30:57 four but um when you have a log at 400 pounds there there's going to be some zeros. And there was a decent number of guys that had no lift on that. I know Brad had told me he was not even planning on attempting the log. Oh, really? Yeah, because he knew 400 pounds wasn't going to go up there and try to pull a bicep. Yeah, and if it's, I don't even know what his PR was, but if it's 20, 30 pounds, okay. Yeah. And if you're not even within, if you're not even within 20 pounds of that, what's the point of even like,
Starting point is 00:31:33 yeah, that's just a tough one. And so, yeah, there was a lot of guys there where, uh, you know, the, the log lift wasn't happening, but go to the next one, the super yolk. I think, what was it like? A thousand pounds it was a thousand pounds okay or something like that yeah so um by arnold standards you know when you look at the ohio arnold what's that crazy that one's like 13 or 14 oh is it 15 yeah something like that i know it's over i know it's at bare minimum it's extremely heavy yeah uh so a thousand pounds which uh still a really heavy yolk yeah uh butoke. To put it in reference to that, the Massanomic Strongman Showdown last year, we did 1,100, I think. And that was a comparable distance, actually.
Starting point is 00:32:13 Without dropping. Yeah, and that's a comparable distance because I think they were going like, this was probably a little farther than that, but not completely different. The one is an amateur strongman. The other one is making his way up through the amateur ranks. So it's by no means an undoable yoke for someone at that level. But there was, again, there's some varying in performance where you have guys finishing it in as quick as like 11 seconds.
Starting point is 00:32:42 And then, you know, some non-finishes, whichishes which is again to be expected when you're just talking with a thousand pound yoke guys like alexei uh novikov and uh matthias they look like they are running with the yoke like matthias stumbled a little bit it's like they put a backpack on yeah it's like all right let's go yeah and that's what they do they just and it's not even like they're taking these little tiny it's like they're just striding out yeah it's crazy it doesn't make any sense how they that's when you just see like how insane like we say it all the time but how insane these guys are right it's another level it is it's like another eight levels it's so nuts so super yolk okay move on from there farmers walking out was that 440 per
Starting point is 00:33:27 hand i can't remember i it was four something per hand for sure anyways it's a great i mean just the fact that you have to do essentially an 800 pound deadlift to start your event that's that's what gets your event started uh that's that's pretty nuts and these guys were booking again same way where it's just like how are they so fat like how are you running sprinting with when you look at matthias so between the you know he obviously put the most work in on the log lift having five five reps and when you look at his next two events though the super yolk he was going for 14 seconds and the farmer's walk he went for eight seconds so between the next two events, he had 20, 22 seconds of work.
Starting point is 00:34:07 Yeah. Uh, yeah, it's just, it's just hard to comprehend how fast he's going. Uh, the other, and there was a lot of competitors,
Starting point is 00:34:16 you know, looking through there that were in that, uh, they're all so fast that the, the time just like a few seconds is such a huge difference when you have 17 competitors. Yeah. Like a three-second difference in time can cost you like six spots. Just looking between 8.43 and 10, 10.5, you have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
Starting point is 00:34:39 You have like six guys within like a second and a half of each other. Right. Some of that, you wonder how much it comes down to stopwatch error. There would be that in there for sure, yes. I don't think they're using exactly like the Olympic level stop record keeping on these things. So, yeah, anyways, close event there. But going into, so we wrap that up. Deadlift next?
Starting point is 00:35:02 Deadlift was the next event. 805 pounds on a pretty stiff bar and this is you don't see this very often it was it looked like about as close to a with the exception of straps about as close to a power lifting setup as you get it was calibrated plates no suits no suits no figure eight straps yeah that one still is so weird to me i still don't completely get that i mean i know you've kind of tried to explain it to me, but I still just don't see. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:35:27 That's always an Arnold rule. That's an Arnold rule. To me, it's also like the no thumb loop on your wrist straps. There is a difference, though, in the way that people can utilize figure eight straps in a different way that they can utilize. Like you can get more because you don't have to like with figure eight straps you almost do not have to wrap your fingers around yeah you're kind of almost as gripping the straps right right so you can get a different range of motion out of
Starting point is 00:35:54 it yeah but for a lot of those guys it probably wouldn't make a difference because it's just like some people like eddie hall is a good example i think he is really good with figure eight straps so like when he'd have to come to the arnold and not be able to use them that would make a difference for him yeah but like brian shaw i think he usually just uses regular i think so i don't know that rule probably doesn't matter for no right yeah um well but thor uses figure eight straps all the time but maybe the elephant bar i don't know i don't know yeah i don't know. Yeah. I don't know. But anyway, so deadlift, we're talking, what did we say, 805? Yeah, 805 solid. 805, four reps on what basically seemed like a stiff bar.
Starting point is 00:36:33 Yep. You got calibrated plates so you don't got weights out to the very end. No touch and go reps. No touch and go reps. This is one, too, where check out because there's about, from what I can tell, the only place where footage exists is Martin's channel on YouTube. He did pretty much a full recap video of it. He actually ended up being a judge for the event, which is kind of cool, too, that they just let him be the judge. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:55 But when you see these guys doing their deadlift setups on an actual just regular barbell, you see, brian shah jerry pritchett they are out so wide past the rings like or or at the they're so wide yeah they are and that that is just their setup and it seems so not advantageous but i guess when your frame when your frame is that big you have the right to do that right but i'm looking at i'm like they're the insides of their legs are where my hands go like like my hands are well inside where their legs are especially those two brian and jerry jerry really has a wide stance yeah big time wide i think jf crone won though did yeah yeah seven reps yeah jf crone won that was seven reps i think brian only got one rep is that right he only got one rep and we will again come back to him but uh yeah he had yes he had one rep on that one um
Starting point is 00:38:00 brad neitzel though did have five or no sorry sorry four four i think he tied mateus actually for with four reps for like seventh eighth place somewhere yeah so i mean that was a and you know brad definitely i think you could ask him he would say deadlift is his best event yep um and yeah he showed up there he put up a put up a really good performance but uh seven reps is jf groan like that's that's a real deal yeah seven is putting in some work there yes it is seven reps at 805 pounds yeah pretty crazy oh it's just like so again so hard like does anyone in power is there ever a a recorded instance of someone in powerlifting do 805 conventional not touch and go reps like i know george lehman had some crazy yeah he did but those were always touch and go he would
Starting point is 00:38:54 actually do um i don't know what you call them but where you like reset on the well well yeah where he would even like pull it out of the rack yeah yeah like yeah start it up yeah it's like almost the reverse deadlift or whatever. Right, right. Eddie Hall kind of would do that same thing sometimes. I bet Lehman did about that number with that much weight, but it's of that doing it that way. Yeah, I'm thinking Forsaken Warrior done a few reps with over 800 pounds you know but nothing like seven you know
Starting point is 00:39:27 he's one of the big conventional guys that comes to mind but yeah it just it is a crazy performance for sure uh and then finally we go into the arm over arm pull which this one was uh they had basically like a weighted sled yep and you let the rope onto it and then you are all the way on one end whatever whether it's 30 yards or however far the distance was and you have kind of the the platform in front of your feet you're basically sitting on your butt your feet are up against a wood platform and that's what gives you your leverage to push and pull this rope towards you yep and some of these guys once they got that sled moving like once they broke it from the friction of the ground,
Starting point is 00:40:07 it's like it was on skates. They were just pulling, Mateus especially, was just pulling this thing like there was nothing to it. Same thing, Novikov was really ripping it too. But yeah, that's your five events. So looking at the placings then, we got Mateus in first with 80.5 points. Novakov in second with 78, so pretty close.
Starting point is 00:40:32 Then we see kind of the first drop with J.F. Caron at 71. Shimlakov then 64, and Jerry Pritchett at 57. So that's where we have the standings. Tanner, we should read some ads quick before we go on to the next one here. Before we finish out that one. Yeah, do you want me to take this away from you? Yeah, you can let those people know.
Starting point is 00:40:56 The Massanomics Podcast is brought to you by Spud Inc. Straps. Check out their adjustable belt squat belt. Starting point is 00:41:30 and other great products at spud-ink-straps.com and be sure to follow them on instagram at spud ink straps we have the regular belt yeah that's what i was gonna ask about i actually had to look this up because we have the regular one and once get, if you've ever tried a belt squat without it, you realize that squatting without it is a complete joke. Yes. You need at the bare minimum the sputting belt squat belt if you have a belt, like the belt squat. That is absolutely essential.
Starting point is 00:41:57 But the adjustable one now, you can adjust kind of the amount of. The loops. There's additional loops in it. So there's choices. There's additional loops in it. There's choices. There's choices, basically. Now, if you have a belt squat that maybe doesn't have adjustable heights with it, you can stop yourself from, depending on your setup, bottoming out because you can pull a little more.
Starting point is 00:42:19 There's probably, by the choices, there's probably, I think, nine different variations that you could set it up with. Leave it up to them to come up with another yeah another option for um like we said we haven't used that but just speaking about the regular belt squat belt exactly what you said is that is what you yeah not even just want but that is what you need it is it is it is the industry standard i we tried even using like a uh what would you call it? Like a dip belt before. Yeah. And it works. It works, but it sucks.
Starting point is 00:42:47 Yeah. There's no comparison. It is not even the same product. You need the spud ink belt squat belt. Yeah. You need that a hundred percent. And we're not even just saying that because they're a sponsor of the mess. Now podcast.

Hybrid has 15 different strength and fitness programs covering everything from powerlifting and strongman to gymnastics and general fitness, all included in one training membership. That's not all. Hybrid also offers one-on-one personalized nutrition coaching that uses lifestyle habits and a flexible approach to shape your nutrition plan around your current lifestyle instead of turning your lifestyle upside down in order to support unsustainable habits that only work in the short run the way most programs do if you're ready to
Starting point is 00:45:10 take your training nutrition or both to the next level use code mass in all caps m-a-s-s for five percent off memberships to all programs for the life of your membership and tommy i don't even really have to ask you this but because i know we've talked about it on the podcast but i'll ask you we've talked about the you know what we personally think the value of good coaching is like of of reputable coaching or something that's worth it and we've both agreed even prior to hybrid being a sponsor that there is real value in coaching that's good oh absolutely there's probably like more than we even know yeah oh a hundred yeah yes yes definitely more than we know and um you know we'll probably talk about this at some point where we're just going to
Starting point is 00:45:59 complain about things that annoy us with the fitness industry but uh that is one of the things that really is so like the more you pay attention to stuff that just the fact that someone is strong or just the fact that someone is lean all of a sudden qualifies them to be a coach and it's like it just couldn't be farther from the truth and and i do believe that hybrid performance when it comes to that they uh not only do they talk to talk the talk they walk the walk and they live the life right so and they and they have the team behind it like if you look on your website uh and like the team that they staff it's like oh well this is a like yeah oh this is a real business this isn't just interns this isn't just something that i have to pay you know to uh uh
Starting point is 00:46:39 monkey around to even get the money and then it's like uh they're just sending me something that they got sent from someone that they paid and this and that it like it's a legitimate business and i just think that there's actual real value there so like if you're if you're thinking about paying money for that service like if you're thinking about paying money for nutrition service why not go to someone like that exactly so now you know now you know how we and you can save five percent by using our discount code that's right so what could be better than that nothing saving money literally nothing could be better than that absolutely nothing so don't even think about it no so thank you to our sponsors uh tanner we got to finish up this conversation
Starting point is 00:47:20 about the straw man oh i was just hoping we'd do more sponsor stuff well we can soon enough but uh probably the biggest shock to most people looking at this will be brian shaw's performance and i just right before the ad break read the top five brian shaw was not in the top five where does brian shaw fit into this seventh at seventh. Now... About mid-pack out of 16, 17 guys he got seventh. And then when you look at the way it happened to the first one, Log Lift, which traditionally he's been one of the best in the world. Yeah. He now has three, which on any given day,
Starting point is 00:47:58 three is not a bad number with this. But we're also talking about a guy that not that many years ago, you should assume is going to place in the top three if not win it assuming like big z's probably not there right right so that's where brian chop probably was not that long ago next one super yolk 18 seconds like i think two years ago you would pick in in the past you would say brian shaw's yeah i mean we watched him was it three years ago two years ago at the arnold with the 1500 pound yoke just get up and walk with it yeah uh so and he probably difference of he probably did that one faster than 18 seconds
Starting point is 00:48:37 so it's like does he just does it doesn't matter what it weighs he's gonna do it in the same amount of time no matter what i don't know if that's the case. But you can't do that. His legs just only go one speed. So whether it's 1,000 or 1,500, that's how it's going to work. Watching him in comparison to the top competitors, he looks like he is in slow motion. Yeah, especially when you're judging about what he was doing not that long ago.
Starting point is 00:49:01 Yeah. So then there's that. We go to the farmer's walk. 13 seconds. You know, again again kind of middle of the pack nothing you know he's never been known for his speed so okay maybe that's just where he's at but probably this next one is the biggest shock the deadlift one lift now this is a guy that a few months ago was going for the all-time world record on the elephant bar at 1,050 pounds or something he called out. Didn't get it, but before that, he did, what did he do, 1,000 something? He did get 1,000 before that.
Starting point is 00:49:38 And now you'd say, well, I mean, this guy's deadlifted over, or he's deadlifted 1,000 several times. Multiple times. Why should 800 be something he can't just rep out at least four times? Right. You got to think that. It's just injuries at this point just piling up, you would assume. Yeah. Right?
Starting point is 00:49:56 I'm sure it was. I haven't heard him say it yet at this point. Did he just get that much weaker in the last few months that his deadlift has dropped 200 pounds? I know he struggled with a hamstring injury at the arnold and sense that world's strongest man even maybe and it's just like i don't know if that stuff's ever going away well i don't think yeah to me at this point i do not think that that is ever going away i know and when you look at the last event that arm over arm pulled 19 seconds that was about middle of the pack again too so when you look at we've been
Starting point is 00:50:24 talking about this for a couple years of them now is every performance we're like hmm like and this is his like oh the worst one he's ever had yeah and as it's been now it's at the point where i do think he is still one of the strongest men in the world but it now it's coming to the point where you just want to think like this is i don't even think this performance this performance gives any clue as to how strong he actually is. Right. Like I don't think this is a true test of what his performance is capable of because I think that these.
Starting point is 00:50:54 He's injured. I want to think it's injured. Like I don't want to think that he's gotten this much weaker over the course of the past year. And I know he said he lost about 20 some pounds. And that was another big one. Purposely. Yeah. But he wasn't faster well he lost that much weight to get faster he was not faster he was just as slow as yeah you want to think if you're losing weight you're getting leaner and meaner and just a better version of yourself but if you lost weight and
Starting point is 00:51:18 you got worse at the sport you did it's like well that also wasn't a good move either like right and i would assume for him losing 20 pounds means like I quit eating a little bit for like a week. Yeah, right. I would assume the weight just falls off of him, you know, with the type of stuff they're doing. But I don't know. Like you just really think where is like, does he need to take a year off? And if he takes a year off, are we going to be like, we're back at stopwatches already ticking? You know, that yes.
Starting point is 00:51:44 Again, that is the thing is if he takes a year off and just gets all healed up, are we back at his stopwatch is already ticking you know that because yes again that is the thing is if he takes a year off and just gets all healed up are we back at brian shaw of like 2015 16 or is it like that that that ship has sailed and that's gone forever yeah i think i think that that is gone forever and he's so he's not qualified for the arnold now and that as of now he will not be at the Arnold. They did announce that the Santa Monica Arnold today, that there is going to be a Santa Monica Arnold. So a few more of these guys can sneak in.
Starting point is 00:52:12 But Martins is also not qualified. Martins is not in. I don't think Jerry Pritchett's in yet. Jerry Pritchett is, because they take, so the Santa Monica Arnold will qualify the the eighth automatic qualifier and then they take two wild cards based on points for the arnold series okay and jerry pritchett is in like first or second for points so jerry will probably still make it like if he goes and does the santa monica one and just places middle of the pack or something he'll probably still he'll make one of those two
Starting point is 00:52:42 wild cards but brian or martinez neither of them are in they haven't been doing most of these shows yeah so you have to do most of the shows needs a win to get yeah but you don't also need a win they need the best placing out of someone that is not already qualified well but so like this to win automatically get them in though like a win would but they don't need a win to get in. They need to place the best out of someone that's not already qualified. Oh, okay. So Mateus and Novikov were both already. This is a good example. Mateus and Novikov were both already.
Starting point is 00:53:16 So J.F. Caron qualified. Okay. So let's say in Santa Monica, Martins, J.F. Caron, and Novakov all go. Martins goes and gets fourth. He would still get in then? Yeah. Since all three of those. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:53:31 Yes. So Martins and Shaw could both. The qualifying rules are not the most publicly made things, and they're not super obvious. Right. And then Jerry Pritchett and one other guy, who I think is probably either like Belshack or Heinle, one of those guys, also has like the most points for the circuit.
Starting point is 00:53:51 Yeah, Heinle's got to be right up there too. Yeah, because neither of them have got an automatic qualifier, but they both placed decent on a lot of them. So they'll probably still get qualified. But Martins and Shaw are not in the running for that. So for sure, one of those two won't be at the arnold this year marty out of martinez and shaw for sure and also is shaw gonna even do it like after this performance like is there something that's gonna be different at that point in time
Starting point is 00:54:16 or does he want to go get embarrassed like because i guarantee this is embarrassing for him like you don't be like the four-time world's strongest man yeah and then just like and then go get seventh like watching your star just very quickly fade away i guarantee he left there feeling not good not happy thinking like god get history channel on the line we gotta get the second season up but that's that's a i mean that's a joke but that's true where that is where his his future is right when i don't i mean that yeah that's awesome that that is where his future is most people would be like most most strong men in this situation be like well i guess i'll just be a person now right that's their other option but that when is he is he and or when is he going to make that call and say okay i have over 1 million youtube subscribers. I'm on a history channel television show.
Starting point is 00:55:06 I'm just going to do that stuff. I'm going to try to make it in a few movies because I'm 6'8", 440 pounds. Yeah, do movies, do seminars, do everything you can to not have to do a normal job and work for someone else. Right, or is he going to continue to go to these competitions and get seventh place and not qualify for Arnold?
Starting point is 00:55:23 There's going to come a point with that where it's more expensive to go to these competitions and get in that place not qualify for the Arnold one. There's going to come a point with that where it's more expensive to go to these competitions and get in that place than the money you're getting back for that place. Because in order to continue his YouTube channel and such, I don't think he needs to be competing in World's Strongest Man. No, I don't think so. He can go hang out with Eddie Hall.
Starting point is 00:55:38 He can just book appearances. I think for the most part, for a few years, people will still be very excited about right going there and meeting him but he is relative to his past kind of stinky poo-poo right now like yeah it's almost like sad to watch not even like distant past but even yeah recent past but i'm a fan of his you know so it kind of is uh but that's also just the name of the game like it's it is especially with strength sports there's a window i mean sports in general and then sports that have strength related to them uh especially strong man that can change in our well and now it just
Starting point is 00:56:16 you really are we really are like witnessing this whole change of the guard thing with that's a good point you know the guys that were like getting in first podium finishes four years ago almost don't exist now no you know but matthias and novikov are really good that novikov is really good didn't did you hear on martin's video he said he's competing 30 times this year okay like every Like every week. He said like every weekend for like five in a row. I had to like play that back like three times. I'm like, I can't be hearing that right. And then.
Starting point is 00:56:51 Martins is like, when do you train? Yeah. It sounds like he said that. I'm like, well, there must be something I'm not understanding here. So that was he actually being serious with it? And he said, when do you train? And he kind of laughed and said, I guess I don't. I guess when you're doing
Starting point is 00:57:05 that many competitions though like that's throwing yourself in the fire like you're gonna get the technique down i think that guy is good i mean i'm not saying anything obviously he's freaking good but like i like if i had to pick who's gonna win world's strongest man this year not counting out half thor and not counting out martinez i think matthias is going to win the world's strongest man this next year i don't know about the arnold that's a little bit different show it's heavier of course i still would it'd be hard for not for me to not pick thor to to win that yeah um but i think matthias is going to win the world's strongest man this year because this deadlift is getting to the point where it's going to be good enough it's not just a glaring weak spot for him anymore but that
Starting point is 00:57:48 novikov like i'll be surprised if he doesn't win world's strongest man in the next few years if he continues if he stays healthy yeah yeah how do you not just be broken at that point i mean that's crazy that's more than every other week that is not sustained but the thing is 52 weeks a year that's more than every other week yeah that is not sustainable like talking about getting injured most of these guys days doing a competition yeah the best of the guys usually only compete like three times a year well thor outside of world's strongest man in the arnold that's it europe's strongest man oh yeah yeah maybe giant slide maybe so three or four yeah matthias seems to do quite a few still but like at some point in time they'll get
Starting point is 00:58:31 old enough that that'll drop down too and they'll get uh established enough that they won't feel like they need to do that either but i i really think those two guys specifically i know martinez won this year and he's also young and coming up but like matthias and novikov both looks so fast with everything that you know it's just it's just i i you know what would get me really really excited this year at the arnold if this year at the arnold when matthias walks by if he took a picture with us you know remember when he walked by last year we're like oh we never it it never dawned on us how big he actually is. Do you know how bad of a job,
Starting point is 00:59:10 even people that came up to our booth to come in that wanted to talk to us, like that we like and all that. Like the day when Meg Squats is like, Masonomics, we're like, oh, it's Meg Squats. You know how to say our name. I think she goes like, hey, can I take a picture with you guys took a picture with us yeah yeah she went away and like oh we didn't take a picture yeah yeah it was like totally like the dumb and dumber thing we're like sorry for my friend the town of the guys is the other way like that's totally like
Starting point is 00:59:39 what we were that's exactly it actually it wasn't even like she was gone five minutes we were we took apart our booth we were i think like 20 miles down the road we're like oh we forgot to take a picture like yeah and that's just and there's so many people like oh and i like i'm a big fan of travis ortmeyer he came by was hanging out talking forever like uh you know like loved our stuff and he was really cool and stuff didn't take a picture with him yep but like at the time it's just oh we were just like brain dead and also a zombie right and it's just and you get desensitized to the whole thing yeah you do definitely get desensitized to it and at the i also like just appreciating the uh getting to talk to oh yeah you know like actually talking to them that you kind of forget there was that one point when in the booth like
Starting point is 01:00:21 we're just sitting there and like perseus is is chilling and Pete Rubish is sitting there. Pete Rubish is hanging out in the booth. And I don't even know who else is in there. We did get a picture with Pete Rubish and Perseus and stuff. But yeah, but they're all just sitting there. I'm like, oh, me four years ago watching YouTube would have just lost my shit if I was like, Pete Rubish is in our booth just hanging out for 30 minutes.
Starting point is 01:00:41 And like we're not even, we're like, we're just busy doing other things. We're here working asking pete to step out of the way so he can grab a shirt oh sorry sorry guys yeah like yeah so that was it's just weird how that can change like so fast as pete is having you know this is something he talks about his youtube channel so i don't feel bad about calling it out but as pete is talking openly about uh different steroid decisions. And we're just sitting there like, huh. Just caught in the crossfire.
Starting point is 01:01:09 Sorry, man. Trying to sell this parody-inspired shirt. Don't mind me. That is true, though. But yeah, this next year, that should be a goal, is to actually get pictures with... Yeah. Or TD Smash and Julius Maddox are both they're hanging out for
Starting point is 01:01:26 a long time taking up the what are 10 foot wide table taking up the entire thing the whole thing we did get a picture with james of you know but of course of course i think that some of those other guys if we didn't i think definitely more people took pictures in our booth than we did right we took like no pictures in our booth other years did. We took no pictures in our booth. Other years, we were great about that because that's what we were there for. This year, we got your brain. It's all that damn work. Yeah, you can really only focus on one thing
Starting point is 01:01:51 after a certain amount of time, and that is just getting the shit sold. Making all that lift shorts cash. We even had this grand idea that we're going to get people to sign a belt and all this stuff or a shirt. That's still a good idea. And that fell apart within seconds of being there and it never even thought about again we should do we should get a custom pioneer belt a massonomics one and get them all
Starting point is 01:02:13 all these people to sign this next year yeah maybe if we're smart uh or someone reminds us we'll do that and then we could raffle raffle it off yeah give it away except i would just want to keep it i know that'd be a really cool item. Yeah. Speaking of all, well, and one other note, Brad did finish, I think, 16th or something like that first first ever pro show. And, you know, I don't know if he is happy or disappointed with that, but I would think no matter what, it's an impressive day to get to compete on the same platform as all of those guys. You actually are competing against the best in the world. to get to compete on the same platform as all of those guys. You actually are competing against the best in the world. So how many people can ever say that they went head-to-head with the best in the world at anything?
Starting point is 01:02:50 So that alone is just a super awesome accomplishment. And I'm sure Brad is already scheming for his next move here. Yeah, no doubt. Well, Tanner. How about this, Tommyy are you familiar with our segment of who weighs more oh i am familiar with it it's back by popular demand okay okay we're just going to jump right into it you remember how to play i do remember how to play more it's pretty it's pretty self-explanatory pick the first one or the second one yes uh try
Starting point is 01:03:23 to decide who weighs more give a a little, give a little story, a little thought as to what you think their weights are, and then pick a final answer. Who weighs more? Hafthor, Julius Bjornsson, or Harambe? Hmm.
Starting point is 01:03:41 The late Harambe. RIP baby. Yeah. So Hafthor, we know is right in that 420 to 440 area the fact that harambe is a gorilla makes me want to say he weighs more i could be wrong because i have no idea how much a gorilla weighs but i really do want to think harambe weighs more harambe weighs more half thor i put down at 430 435 you know it does depend on the day is that right that same long same thinking of you harambe they had listed at 440 445 really so not very very close i thought if you had told me to guess i would have said 550 no bear within
Starting point is 01:04:22 give or take 10 pounds okay so harambe has definitely at one point in his life weighed less than it is very close wow did not know i just assumed gorillas were over 500 and maybe harambe was not a very large i would assume he was a very large gorilla he was harambe after all yeah that's true okay so you're right one for one scoreboard who weighs more taylor atwood you're familiar or tom cruise taylor atwood i think is around like 160 ish whatever that weight class is i think it's like 163 i think so i would assume he's right at the top of that weight class about 163 I think so I would assume he's rated stop that weight class about 163 Tom Cruise a little man Mmm outside of Tom Cruise being a little man. I don't have much much to his
Starting point is 01:05:17 His weight is a mystery and I believe his height is a bit of a mystery. Yeah He's always running he's always so he can't be too. He's always running. He is always running. So he can't be too heavy. He's always sprinting. I think the last Tom Cruise movie I saw and I actually really enjoyed it was The Edge of Tomorrow. Have you seen that? I don't think I have.
Starting point is 01:05:32 It's really, really good actually. It's several years. It's probably five years old at this point. Is it Mission Impossible? No, no, no, no, no. I haven't seen any of the new Mission Impossibles, but this one is like a sci-fi one where he's like somehow this thing happens
Starting point is 01:05:46 and he's in this military base in this sci-fi setting and he dies, but every time he dies, the day just starts over. So he keeps trying to get farther and farther and farther and farther along. Almost like a groundhog. It is like a groundhog alien invasion military thing. It's pretty cool.
Starting point is 01:06:03 I've not seen that. If you're into military, I mean more sci-fi, but even kind of military type things, I think you'll find this enjoyable and I liked it a lot. But that doesn't answer the question of how much does he weigh.
Starting point is 01:06:16 I'm going to say Tom Cruise weighs more because I don't think he's as lean. Just seeing how long it was. People might think the podcast just died there. Taylor Atwood actually weighs more. Really? They've got Tom Cruise listed at about 150. You were right on the nose on Taylor Atwood, 163.
Starting point is 01:06:39 160, okay. They've got Tom Cruise at about 150. I think he's pretty short. He must be pretty short. I think he's like 5'4 or 5'5. I don't know. I can't remember. Yeah, that's the thing.
Starting point is 01:06:49 I just don't know how tall he actually is. We've got Taylor by about 10 pounds. Taylor's going to be by about 10 pounds. To me, 150 is such a small man. Yeah, it is. Such a tiny little man. Yes, it is. So you're one for one.
Starting point is 01:07:01 This last one is for all the marbles. Nothing matters up to this point. This one is a boomer bust. We want the marbles nothing matters up to this point this one is a boomer we want the marbles this one's not gonna be easy because we get into this weird thing where there's huge discretion discrepancies and heights and widths and like it's like uh last week the the one that busted people was Uri Belkin versus Kevin Durant. You knew it. You said Kevin Durant you think has got to be heavier because you're like, he's 6'11". I don't think most people realize how tall NBA players actually are.
Starting point is 01:07:32 That's probably what got people. Maybe a lot of people that are into the NBA don't realize that Durant is nearly seven feet tall. Because there was like 60-some percent that voted on Uri on that one. So that's where people got tripped up. So I tried to find another tricky-ish one here. So we're going to go Joe Sullivan or Blake Shelton, who weighs more. Blake Shelton. What do you know of Blake Shelton?
Starting point is 01:08:02 Is it the voice or is it The Voice? It is The Voice? It's The Voice. Okay, it is The Voice. I get all those talent shows mixed together. As you should. Yeah, as I should. His wife is Gwen Stefani, correct? Is that his wife?
Starting point is 01:08:14 I don't know if that's his wife. He used to be married to some blonde country singer, and they got divorced. Yeah. I don't know country, but I feel like I can picture her face. And now his at least girlfriend is Gwen. Maybe wife is Gwen Stefani.
Starting point is 01:08:29 Yeah, I don't keep up my Hollywood tabloids. I don't care. Okay. So if Gwen Stefani's his wife, I'm just trying to calculate how much. Yeah. And she was the lead singer of No Doubt.
Starting point is 01:08:41 No Doubt. And she knows just what your... Spiderwebs. Don't speak. Don't speak don't speak yep that too okay who's who am i comparing him to again joe sullivan joe sullivan wearer of many a massonomics t-shirt it does that matter i think it never seen like shelton in a mass i haven't i have not i this i don't know joe sullivan's weight class for sure i think it's like 220 but it also could be 242 that's where i'm a little mixed up and he's probably done both but i think joel sullivan's kind of short and i think blake shelton's kind of tall and also like for just an
Starting point is 01:09:18 average dude i don't think blake shelton probably works out so he's probably not trim or fit and he's probably tall he weighs at least 220 just because i don't for sure know joe sullivan's weight class i want to say blake shelton weighs more that is incorrect really but it's a little bit of a trick question because blake shelton just recently lost quite a bit of weight we've got joe sullivan and also you are exactly right on joe sullivan competes in both 220 and 242 last meet last couple meets maybe he's competed it in Okay. We've got Joe Sullivan, and also you were exactly right on Joe Sullivan, competes in both 220 and 242. Last meet, last couple meets maybe, he's competed in the 242 and has been right towards the top of that.
Starting point is 01:09:52 So we've got him right now as about 240. Blake Shelton reported now at 212. Oh. Because he has gotten much more svelte. I guess the divorce and the new Gwen Stefani thing. Gwen just whooped his and gwen said don't don't speak just lose weight just lose the weight yeah so we've got blake at 212 but i think blake shelton is like 6'3 yeah i was yeah you were right for some reason in my mind i thought he was kind
Starting point is 01:10:18 of a tall guy he's pretty tall maybe if because you ever seem standing next to all the little people on the voice yeah but i bet at one time you know joe sullivan was competing in 220 and blake shelton probably made weighed more like 240 so six months ago a little bit of a tricky question yeah right wow well that's just the way it goes you didn't get the marbles today i need to be more timely with my thought process here you need to keep up on blake shelton uh i'm just going based off of historical data this whole time so that's our who weighs more segment for the week. Wow. Always a great segment.
Starting point is 01:10:47 Real brain buster there. Yeah. I was kind of 50-50 on a couple of those, and it didn't do me right. That's the thing about Who Weighs More. There's tricks involved here. We involved animals this week for the first time, too. Harambe.
Starting point is 01:11:02 Yeah, got to open up the field, too. Harambe got to be the first animal. No surprise there, really. I think anyone could have saw that coming. There's only so many people that I could have pit Harambe against to even neck it out. To where it would be evens.
Starting point is 01:11:18 Harambe versus Joe Sullivan. Was Harambe a gorilla or a chimp? I can't remember. Joe Sullivan's kind of in that same same boat um did we want to oh we have a podcast review i would like to go over that before we there was a five out of five star podcast review and as always we want to encourage you to leave podcast reviews on apple podcasts everyone always asks me if there's other places they can leave reviews i think it's usually android users that say is i don't have apple podcast can i leave a review somewhere else to my knowledge
Starting point is 01:11:55 my answer is maybe i think i don't know where and i don't know how to can yeah i think on stitcher you can but um to be honest yeah to be honest i'm not gonna know it or be able to read it you can you could do this you could write a message and just screenshot it and send it to us and we'll read that yeah we don't really care what platform it's on we'll just read it right as long as it's five stars yeah you just have to figure out how to put five stars in the description and we'll read it okay so this is from emyrs8 em-R-S-8, Emmer's 8. The title cuts off, but it says, Old Greg Gives Two Out of Two Spuh.
Starting point is 01:12:34 So I don't know what that goes to, but I'll just get to the nuts and bolts of it here. Do you know Old Greg? Did you ever know the YouTube video? No. Oh. What is that? I can't even remember.
Starting point is 01:12:44 Okay, so I really didn't know what this meant, but now I guess you have some contact. Yeah, it's like a YouTube thing. It's probably been. What would he rate things as? Because he says two out of two spa. I don't remember it old enough. I just remember old Greg.
Starting point is 01:12:56 I just remember the YouTube thing of whatever the hell, if he's like a monster or whatever he is. I can't even remember what he is now. Okay. So they do say five out of five stars. Massics colon the segment podcast about lifting that's an interesting yeah that's an interesting twist on the whole thing the segment podcast about lifting although the host would state they covered no ground in almost 200 episodes they have pro-generated a new genre of podcasts that only cover minimal useful
Starting point is 01:13:26 information each installment at an hour long each the enjoyment given by listening is worth more than a pair of lift shorts wow bold claim yeah good review so thank you for that five-star review yep very good you too could be read if you uh give us a five-star review. Now, are we to the underrated, overrated segment of the podcast? I think so. We're actually, Tanner, we're actually an hour and 14 minutes in right now. What? We are booking over here. What?
Starting point is 01:13:56 And that camera is still running. Yeah, that's what I had to look up. What the hell is going on right now? That's going to be redlining very soon here, so we better get to this. We'll review last week's quickly. We did MLB Major League Baseball. People said 65% overrated. Almost surprised it wasn't higher.
Starting point is 01:14:11 Cardio training, 69% overrated. That still shocks me. I guess people don't like it. I feel like people are answering, do you like it or not? I think if you looked at all those people and said, is cardio really overrated? I don't think it is overrated by definition. Massages, you said is cardio really overrated i don't think it is overrated by definition uh massages you said very very underrated that's the people voted 77 underrated not surprised there now the wild card this is the one i want to know yeah limp biz kit i really didn't know the what way this was gonna go when i voted when i voted this morning
Starting point is 01:14:42 it was at 50 50 yeah we're 52 percent overrated as we speak but that could fluctuate and that's about as close as it ever gets isn't it yep that is i guess that's why we didn't had a hard time knowing because it is it really is close i don't know i kind of think they're underrated but i don't know what did you say do you i said underrated okay it took me a while but i're underrated, but I don't know. What did you say? I said underrated. Okay. It took me a while, but I said underrated. Okay. Are you ready to hop into this?
Starting point is 01:15:10 We could skip underrated, overrated, but can we really? No, we can't break that streak. No, we can't really do that. We cannot do that. But we will just jump into it, maybe bypass the rules in sake of trying to outrun our video camera battery right here. So topic number one, overrated or underrated on episode 182 of the massonomics podcast best buy the store so where you would say best buys overrated is well you just buy everything online that's what amazon's for that's what amazon's for. That's what. Amazon's for. Where they're underrated is that how often do you get to see any of that shit in person now?
Starting point is 01:15:52 Like, never. Like, I went to a Best Buy for the first time in a really long time a few months ago. And I was actually shocked. Like, God, like, this is the stuff you see on the internet, but never in person. Like, it was kind of weird because you just don't get to actually, oh, that TV that I wanted to buy that you just click because you read a review and saw the picture. Online, you can actually see the real picture in person. I kind of think that that's underrated.
Starting point is 01:16:23 I mean, I know as a company they're not doing the best, but I think they're underrated. One, just for the fact that they have a physical presence so you can see some shit. Then two, once they're gone, I guess that means Amazon can charge whatever they want now because no one's left. Are they our last electronics defense against Amazon?
Starting point is 01:16:40 Yeah, that's kind of true, I suppose. I think they're the last retail defense. But Amazon, the way Amazon works, I think they, you know, are they not competition within them within amazon itself like they're being able to be different sellers of the same product or not really there's not not that the way it works i don't think they're a seller okay no i don't think best but like you're saying as a seller on amazon or no of just amazon being made up of more than just because cannot um oh you know there's competition within amazon itself so that's like one distributor couldn't just jack up the
Starting point is 01:17:12 price yeah but it just goes from someone else but it just goes right back to it's still buying through amazon right so the second the market the second amazon decides like well we this seller violated our terms right yeah on amazon anymore you're gone you're still in their ecosystem so you do have a point there but i still don't completely buy it uh yeah i'm gonna say uh i'm gonna say best buy is underrated all right i think everyone else uh abandoned them long ago so yeah they're not quite blockbuster yet they're not quite blockbuster but they're doing everything they can get underrated or overrated cooking shows cooking shows could be food network this is tough because i we're lumping them all into one basket
Starting point is 01:17:53 personally cannot stand cooking game shows like let's take something that's good and fun and like should be fun and it's like a time for family to get together and discuss and talk about things and catch up on your day and make food and partake in this communal experience and let's just make it stressful and put artificial constraints and guidelines and fake drama and make things yeah and just make it as intense as possible and like I that just doesn't appeal to me is like why people look to figure out how to make every event stressful Yeah, like things just can't be what they are. Like it just can't be like hey, we're just doing this thing and Growing up
Starting point is 01:18:35 Before like the Food Network really took off like when I was a kid Iron Chef would be on the food network the Japanese ones, right? I thought it was translation this thing because you're watching these people with like these just insane like skill levels doing the i mean just doing wild stuff you know making the making the fish ice cream or whatever the hell they would make you know with these constraints because they have all these dishes they have to do but cooking shows that are not competitive like anthony bourdain like no reservations i love that show like watched it so hard for multiple years i probably missed a few but i want to think that i've seen almost every one of them love that um you know just and like netflix
Starting point is 01:19:19 has a pretty good like chef's table you know pretty damn good like cinematography and like getting to like the story behind this and how people are doing it like really focusing back on this creative aspect of making food but when you say cooking shows i'm thinking of it most people i believe when they think of cooking shows they think of the competition part and i am not on board with that so i think i'm gonna say for sure competitive cooking shows are overrated and because i'm just gonna say that that is cooking shows i'm gonna say i'm gonna say cooking shows are overrated okay overrated next topic overrated or underrated skittles the candy taste the rainbow
Starting point is 01:19:57 okay it's a it's a sugary sugary little pellets yeah like it doesn't don't need to make it out to be anything more than what it is. You probably enjoyed them from the age of like five to 16. Oh, there goes the camera. Yeah. Five to 16. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:20:16 Did that really define your youth? Like was that, was where Skittles the soundtrack to your youth? There seems to be a little hoopla around Skittles at times. Doesn't that? Yeah. I just think, I just think it's goes back to the fact that powerlifting does just not have enough exciting stuff going on,
Starting point is 01:20:29 so people have to identify with sugary snacks. As lame as that sounds. It really does sound lame when you say it out loud. Yeah, people have to tie their identity to their unique... I'm using air quotes here because the video's dead, their unique, I'm using air quotes here because the video's dead, so I have to tie a certain sugary snack to their unique identity
Starting point is 01:20:51 to stand out from the millions of other people that also go to the gym and lift weights and don't have to talk about it in ways that make them special. But yeah, Skittles, Skittles overrated. Overrated. Last topic for the day overrated or underrated dad hats i think dad hats are underrated uh and how would you describe a dad dad hats uh that's what most people would consider uh more of like an unstructured cap unstructured structured and usually shallow yep unstructured usually shallow and then typically we're not
Starting point is 01:21:25 talking about a flex yeah like not a flex fit or uh um uh usually not fitted or not a flex but usually yeah they have kind of like a clasp closure on the back uh like kind of almost like a cinch closure kind of i mean that's probably not the right word but yeah clasp was probably the way um i think it's underrated because you know what there need to be all styles of everything it's definitely trendy right now but for a while there was only there was only fitted new era caps that was the only style then for a while we got trucker caps again like extreme like mesh like mesh snapback or mesh trucker caps and then we also had snapback snapback kind of like new era caps. Like we had that.
Starting point is 01:22:07 And then it kind of came full circle. And now we're getting dad caps. And when I say now we're getting them, I mean, they've been around. Yeah. It's not brand new. They've been back for several years again now. But yeah, let there be a hat for every head type. Every head type needs a hat.
Starting point is 01:22:22 Yeah. I'm all on board. You didn't say fedora's there tanner so that's a whole conversation it's funny though where where i the culture i grew up in and the dads that i grew up around that is not what dads were in the agriculture trucker style yeah not not a truck not a high front but uh mesh back because they're working outside in the summer and snap. Mesh back and snap. That's what dads wore where I came.
Starting point is 01:22:51 You know, I don't remember really any dads wearing what is called a dad hat. They wore like, we really don't sell a hat quite like it. We sell our lift hat, but that has like too high of a front. That's not probably quite right. I believe crown is the technical term. Okay has too high of a front. That's not probably quite right. I believe crown is the technical term. Okay, too high of a crown, yeah. Got to get the words right so people know what we're saying here. But I don't get to invent the names of these hats.
Starting point is 01:23:15 I just have to follow the rules. Just got to partake in it. So that was the last topic, the end of overrated. Underrated always brings us to the end of the show, especially when we're this far into it.
