Starting point is 00:03:06 Oh, and before we get too far in, the biggest thing, what everyone wants to know, it's now become a thing. It's where are we at on the road to 200? That's it. That's the only thing anyone cares about anymore, I think, is where are we at on the road to 200. We might have to start leaving this to the end of the episode
Starting point is 00:03:24 so people actually listen to the whole thing that's true because i i do fear that that's what happening is happening people are tuning in just to get the update on where we're at to our road to 200 five-star apple podcast reviews they get that and they get out they don't they don't hear our our mid mid-roll sponsorship line they don't hear at the end when we tell them to buy stuff from us so we're kind of at least have the respect for the sponsors to stick around for them right so um big news it has gone up oh the number is the official number being crunched right now Yep. We are up to 162 this week. Wow. Is that up one more or two more?
Starting point is 00:04:11 I think it's one. It's really tricky, weird things. You know how a couple weeks ago it went up 10 and there wasn't a single one to read. This week, I'm pretty sure it went up one and there's two new ones to read. I think it's called addition by subtraction i i guess it is i i i'm i'm pretty baffled but there are two good ones that i that are available to read here so i'm going to read them both um but that's the official update the official count is we're up to 162 so 38 off man we could hit it next week if we keep this up. There's a very good chance. Okay, so review number one is from Wardrop.
Starting point is 00:04:51 And that's a five out of five stars. And he says, y'all are like warm apple pie. Thanks for the awesome podcast, dudes. Look forward to your hot takes every Monday. Y'all keep me motivated for lifting and going when I have gym access. P.S. Why not try McD's apple pie with ice cream? Ooh. I mean, that's not quite outside the box thinking, but it kind of sort of is.
Starting point is 00:05:17 I should do both at the same time. Yeah. Two at once. I like that suggestion and that review. Yeah. Two at once. I like that suggestion and that review. Yeah. Next one is from Michael underscore Daryl. Five out of five stars. The title is hashtag road to 200. So he gets it. Yep. And he says, may the odds be ever in your favor. Did you like Hunger Games? odds be ever in your favor do you like did you like hunger games um i've seen the first one not even all of it so i'm not a good uh okay i'm not uh are you up with the whole series
Starting point is 00:05:54 i have not seen them all i've seen is there movies like are they done is there movies for all of them is that a thing or they i are done those are done I don't know actually I'm not sure I think they're done though well they're definitely not releasing any this summer that's for sure exactly but so that's where we're at 162 a couple good ones to read make sure to leave yours
Starting point is 00:06:19 before next week so we can read them on air and have something important to say about about our number going up on the road to 200 keep that number climbing yep oh one other one other really important piece of uh news that everyone wants to know about is i didn't tell you but my um we got like three inches of people have asked we've been slacking on the weather updates we have yeah yeah and people have brought that up. So someone actually suggested we should do an episode that's 100% local South Dakota weather.
Starting point is 00:06:54 It could be a fairly entertaining episode for at least a little bit because the variety could be surprising. Right. What's the old saying about the weather here in South Dakota? If you don't like the weather, just wait a week. I think it's even if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes. I think the one I heard. Oh, five minutes. Okay. There you go. Okay. But we got like almost three inches of rain the other night and my sump pump quit working in the middle of that night and our entire basement got water in it did it really yeah so it was uh uh it wasn't like standing water but the our basement is carpeted
Starting point is 00:07:34 and like the the the carpet in every room of the basement had was water was wet you know so it and this was i found out at six in the morning when i when i took a step into the basement and it went like squish and i was like which is the worst way to like find out yeah yes and i was like what's going on here and this is right and when i had woken up so it was uh it ended up being uh uh quite the hectic day it took about 10 hours of shop backing and rug doctoring and then getting like industrial fans and blowing things. But as of today, pretty happy to report that everything seems to be pretty well dried out and not smelling and still some things to do to it to keep it from going south.
Starting point is 00:08:25 Wow. I mean, that's good that it's taken care of, but never good when it goes down. I had a somewhat similar thing. It was a month ago, I think, basically when the ground started thawing out. And in my house, there's a radon mitigation system, and it's in the room over from me. And I can sometimes hear a very, if it's really quiet, a faint fan blowing because there's a fanon mitigation system and it's in the room over from me and i can sometimes hear a very if it's really quiet a faint fan blowing because there's a fan that like sucks air out and i thought i could hear like a bubbling noise and i'm like that's really weird that that's bubbling um do
Starting point is 00:08:56 some looking around go over check the sump pump and it is full to the top level like one more inch in it yeah it would be overflowing um yeah got a new sump pump in and my house actually has drain tile under it well the entire drain tile the entire house was full so it took like a good uh two three hours of running non-stop to get that all out and i was just thinking like if that got much fuller my basement would be in trouble so i i dodged the bullet on that one yeah and that's what this was like is the the sump pump still works fine but the float the switch for some reason it just happened to not engage i literally that morning went and bumped the switch like i just had a small stick and just tapped it like just ever so slightly and kick and it kicked on so something
Starting point is 00:09:45 within that switch just wasn't quite triggering it to kick on and it was overflowing out of the like that's where a lot of the water came from and the drain tile was all full just like what you said yeah so it was just coming in uh just around the house everywhere because yeah yeah uh yeah so it was pretty pretty sucky yeah yeah also three inches of rain is never good here like this time of year and we are already wet to begin with so yeah yeah so that's kind of our weather update for the for this month and then on top of that it has been really cold at night like last night it almost got to freezing i think it's supposed to be close to the same tonight so like we have had some warmer days, but then yeah, it's been getting been really windy lately a lot, which is not that
Starting point is 00:10:29 unusual here at all, but right. So that's it for this week in South Dakota weather until next week, until next week. Uh, we do have something to report on though, as far as an update of something we left hanging quite a while ago. And people have asked for some updates off and on. We didn't even get updates ourselves until pretty recently. But that issue is the Arnold. And we spent episodes, full-on episodes, talking about the fallout and the issues regarding the Arnold. A lot of that's not news to anyone. The big thing there being we had a lot of money into booth fees.
Starting point is 00:11:12 And what happens with that? Are we going to be compensated? Do they just take it? What does that mean for next year? We didn't know any of those things. But since that time, there's been several weeks of emails back and forth. And we do have some answers now, Tanner. Finally, a lot of people have asked,
Starting point is 00:11:31 so we thought we shouldn't only report the bad news when someone's doing something we don't like. We should also report if someone's... If someone does something right, yeah, we should let people know. Right, right. So in our opinion, they're they're doing a good job doing the best they can given the situation and obviously the situation ended up being way crazier than we understood at the time even you know i mean this ended up affecting
Starting point is 00:11:56 everything in the world to a scale that we would have never imagined when uh because at the time that the arnold got, this seemed pretty crazy. Yeah, it was like March 1st or 2nd. Right. Coronavirus almost wasn't a thing that, I mean, it was a thing that some people didn't even know about at that time for sure. Right, right. But basically in a nutshell, what they're agreeing to do, it hasn't been all done yet, but it sounds like it's going to be the case. They're not going to charge us anything additional to have a booth next year.
Starting point is 00:12:28 So you could say that that fee that we paid is almost rolling to next year's. So you could say already it's a wash, you know, like it's. Yeah, yeah, because it's not their fault that the Arnold had to close. You know, like we can't blame them for that, especially in hindsight knowing what we know now. Like, of course'd say well of course the arnold was canceled you know yep um so that's pretty fair a lot that in itself especially for a company like us that would plan on going back that's pretty fair and then in addition to that they're giving us a little bit of our money back uh from the fees that we paid
Starting point is 00:13:05 this year you know like probably 20 20 that we're getting back so that's almost like above and beyond as far as i'm concerned you know that's that's as much as we could ever hope for i i think yeah that's more than i thought we would get yeah we talked uh off air about this quite a bit and we would have been we would have felt that it was fair enough to get considerably less than what they did. So to essentially get a year free plus or to get our payment rolled over to the next year so that that's taken care of. And on top of that, to also get cash back. We thought that that was a pretty solid deal. So we were happy with how it all shook out.
Starting point is 00:13:41 We thought that that was a pretty solid deal. So we were happy with how it all shook out. And even in addition to that, they say the 2022 that they will give us a little bit of a discount that year. And which, if they do that, that's great. If they decided not to, I wouldn't bitch about it. I'd still be pretty, I think that's pretty fair. So, yeah, I think they did a good job. I mean, I'm sure they're eating it somehow but i would think
Starting point is 00:14:06 i still think like they definitely didn't make money like they normally do like that's without a doubt how that's working but uh all things considered i i think it is pretty fair and i think it's a win for us and hopefully it's a win for them too so they can keep this whole thing going year after year yeah and i yeah and they have to worry about hoping to keep uh vendors coming back you know they don't want people to stop coming back so i think it's probably a good solution for them to to hopefully get people to take this rolling deal so that way people uh plan on returning i think most would anyways but i'm sure it was a concern for them you know worrying about people not coming in the future yeah definitely so that's that good stuff yeah so with the arnold
Starting point is 00:14:52 taken care of now we can get back to uh all of the exciting things happening in the strength world and when i say all of the exciting things i mean the one and only thing that's taking place right now in any way and that was the much hyped thor 501 deadlift yeah and spoiler alert he did it he did it if you somehow have just missed all communications in the world over the last uh week or two here he did manage to pull it off looked surprisingly easy i mean as easy as 501 can ever look right yeah i think it really moved pretty good i uh i saw videos of him and his and eddie's compared side by side you know eddie's 500 and thor's 501 and really they weren't too much different i don't think maybe thor's was just like a little bit faster you know thor got it up to like his knees or just past his knees pretty quickly and he could tell it got harder at a certain point and he but he didn't really struggle to lock it out i don't think uh
Starting point is 00:15:54 yeah but i i we both you and i even said we both kind of expected him to get it i don't think it was a given because it's still 501 kilograms but i think it kind of went about how both of us would have and how a lot of people thought it probably would yeah i thought the the side by side comparison because yeah there was a lot of those videos going around and it was actually surprising watching both at the same time how speed wise how close they really were yeah the big difference there just being the aftermath of Eddie looking like he was dying versus Thor seeming like... Thor celebrating. Okay, yeah, I guess he did it and he's fine.
Starting point is 00:16:31 But for both of them, too, looking back, though, I think there was probably... I mean, if the bar was loaded heavier, I think they both would have done more weight. I don't know how much more, does slower have 520 probably right you would think he could have done more but also at that level who knows maybe two more kilograms maybe he wouldn't have to you know you don't it's it's so hard to say like everyone knows that feeling of when you get a pr and people are like dang you could have done way more but at the time you're like in my head i don't know i was going to die yeah right right right so who knows maybe five more kilograms would have been you know
Starting point is 00:17:15 and he's so proficient i would assume that it when he can't do it he just can't do it anymore it seems like he could have done more it does yeah i also wouldn't be surprised if it's one of those things where it's like oh that seemed like it went good and 10 more kilos is just the spot where hammies just tear like yeah that was the line i'd be like okay yeah i i'll buy that it because what makes sense at that level anyways right right for sure um and you know as far far the i would wanted to mention the live stream part of it i didn't watch it it was on regular espn i didn't watch it on there i watched on like rogues live stream and they had uh laws is uk strong man you know from from the uk he was like an announce uh was calling calling it over by a whatever video conference and then they had a uh icelandic guy live in the gym who was also
Starting point is 00:18:15 uh talking and they couldn't i mean he didn't do anything wrong but you couldn't have found someone being less excited or less animated i mean you would you know how golf announcers will whisper talks so even and that's what it was i mean it was really boring like i think if someone was just tuning into that they would have been it wasn't done all that well and i know i'm sure there were some restrictions because of the limit there were some limitations because of the coronavirus covid19 stuff probably but all in all it for as big of a stage as they got themselves to being on espn as a live broadcast i think they dropped the ball a little bit there. You know, I think that's, that's the one thing live streams can be hit and miss, but I would say for the most part, live streams are probably getting better,
Starting point is 00:19:16 especially if you were to compare them to five years ago, just the number of live streams is significantly more. But the one thing that people always struggle with and is almost always a criticism of anything that you watch is commentators can be pretty bad like more often than not commentators usually like best case scenario is a commentator can just be neutral and not bad yeah whereas to have a good commentator is so rare in strength sports you just don't see that hardly ever and i don't know if that's because it is that hard to do or there's just that few people that can do it in the straight or good at it yeah that know enough to do it and i guess that's just the way it is yeah yeah i'm not
Starting point is 00:20:01 saying i could have done a better job i'm just saying what was out there for being on ESPN did not seem very good. I bet some people turning into that were a little bit not blown away by what they saw there. Underwhelmed. Right, underwhelmed. But maybe part of it is limitations of the coronavirus it probably would have been done better had it been in a normal circumstance and that would make sense yeah um but i would just say that the that part of it kind of sucked really it wasn't you know the actual lift uh that side of it was pretty cool you know there's no 501 kilograms it's pretty damn cool to
Starting point is 00:20:46 watch but that part of it was a little bit of a letdown yeah well you can't have it all right amen but thank god he did it i was just like as he as he as i was watching part of this it's like man if he doesn't get it this is so looks so bad for all the people that don't really care about strength sports and might be tuning in for the first time it's like yeah if it's one of those things where he pulls it and it goes two inches off the ground which can totally happen with deadlift prs we've all been there and if it just goes two inches stops and that's it it was like oh that was a tough watch but and then what if that wasn't the case yeah then it's like all right he didn't get it thanks for watching we'll see you next time you know yeah yeah i wonder what the script they had in front of them said like to do
Starting point is 00:21:35 if it doesn't happen because i would yeah that could be really awkward in a hurry yeah and you know i it seems like they would have like had some uh i don't know if b-roll is the right word but just like some um or even some interviews like it seems like they would have pre-interviewed thor and been able to roll these clips like in between attempts and that sort of thing you know like what you would expect on a real production. That would have been a good add to it, but they didn't have stuff like that. And it's just like, ah, kind of. Yeah. You just kind of think if you just, the only excuse you can make is like given the times,
Starting point is 00:22:16 like maybe just the budget for that stuff and just the availability of people to do things just isn't there. And it's just, this is, this is what you got to deal with yeah yeah so then all that turns into though yeah what's next now what what now that this has been done what's next for thor yeah so then thor got on there and said uh announced the seven figure um boxing contract for him to him and eddie to to sign and what was the line Thor had this is obviously a premeditated line he said I something like I just beat your deadlift record and now I'm ready to beat you in the ring like that wasn't the exact words but it was something just like
Starting point is 00:23:01 that and it's like okay and it just it goes it looks like okay so it was just the whole beef of eddie complaining about it yeah just to drum up was the whole thing manufactured in general you know because we spent several episodes talking about it brian shaw had huge videos on it pretty much everyone that has anything that produces content around it talked about it pretty heavily which drove up a ton of hype and now that they rolled that uh it just feeds right into this next thing that they i think had planned all along yeah i think it was all premeditated like i they might not like each other that much which is possibly true i don't even know if I believe that.
Starting point is 00:23:48 I think it was all pretty much all a setup for this. A huge chunk of it was a setup just for this, and which is not a stupid decision on their part. No, yeah, it was marketing. Yep, they built a story. They were smart marketers and made a story and got people to go with it. So is there a date on that i can't even yeah the okay so that's the thing the boxing match is set for september of
Starting point is 00:24:13 2021 oh so we are okay the boxing match is a year and a half away and so what thor has said is that's all he's doing now is training for this boxing match he's not going to do world's strongest man in 2020 he's not going to do world's strongest man in 2021 because he is training for the fight with eddie for the next year and a half so I don't know that he said I've retired from strongman but he's 31 years old he's not going to do strongman for the next two years he's going to train as a boxer I assume he's going to lose a lot of weight if he wants to do well like I don't think it being 450 is yeah yeah it looks bad if they both go in and are just dying after two minutes in the ring. Right. Right. So he'll do the,
Starting point is 00:25:07 do the, get to the fight and be 33 and then be two years removed for training for strong man. And in order to get back to it, it would require, I would, I would think at least a year of, you know, it's like gets to where his timeline is 35 years old to get back to strong
Starting point is 00:25:22 man. If that's what he even is planning on doing which which i just say all that to lead to i wonder if he's not just kind of done doing strong man all together at this point it's a good question you know you can't it would for sure he could come back and absolutely unless something crazy is going to happen you would think he's going to place top five in in pretty much any competition yeah he would for sure compete i don't think thor is at a point in his life where he wants to be top five i think he just is now at the point where i am the champion i come in first and if i don't come in first that's a problem
Starting point is 00:25:55 right right i have a hard time believing thor is going to do the brian shaw thing where he's just going to like linger through injuries for like four years and like just scrape by and not plays and kind of talk about it and hope to get things. I just have a hard time seeing Thor be that way now. Yeah. What is the saying? You either like you either die early or you live or what's it's like the Batman or you you live long enough to see yourself become the uh bad guy or you know and it kind of goes with the whole burnout or fade away thing too you know right right right and it seems hard to believe that thor would take that approach though right i i so that's my my take on it is he is going to leave on top and probably not come back and also like
Starting point is 00:26:45 he's arguably the best strong man that right now i think like he would be the favorite to win world strongest man if that's what he was pursuing right now but him taking two years off of it like guys like matthias kilkowski him actively training for two more years he's going to be better than thor over that period of time the only thing stopping yeah matthias from having one or two arnold's and world's strongest man is essentially his deadlift like if his deadlift was in the top four or even the top five he would have many more titles to his name already and to think that that's not going to to think that his deadlift won't go up over the next two years it's possible it won't but it seems hard to believe that it
Starting point is 00:27:30 wouldn't and if that goes up then it seems like he has everything on lock for several more years too then yeah Thor's not so much better than the rest of the field that he could just screw off and still be able to come back and win like if he's not dedicating everything to it like he has those other guys would be better as my what i would think you know martinez matthias probably brian like there are people that i don't wouldn't even know to mention they would be better than him at strongman if he's not training you know training for strongman which isn't a weird thing to say you know i guess it makes sense but um so yeah what do you that's that's kind of what i think is that he's probably done doing strongman which isn't a weird thing to say you know i guess it makes sense but um so yeah what do you that's that's kind of what i think is that he's probably done doing strongman which is
Starting point is 00:28:08 kind of uh for anyone that likes strongman is a pretty big uh pretty big loss for the sport of strongman you know for what what what's exciting to see it's it kind of sucks that he won't be doing that anymore it is at the same time you just wonder, will he be a part of it in some way? Will he be... Right. Just with the accent. Will he be an MC at World's Strongest Man? I was going to say, with the accent, it seems like...
Starting point is 00:28:34 Would they bring him and Eddie both there? Yeah, and I think Eddie is much more of a... Especially from an English standpoint, he speaks English. And Thor does, but he's not i wouldn't say as as charismatic and fluent on the mic as someone like eddie would know so i don't know if i could ever see him in a position like that i could for sure just see him being like all right let's see what thor says for something but as far as commentating a whole
Starting point is 00:28:59 show or being an mc for a whole show i don't see him in that position i could just see him being around the sport always you know right to think that you could go to the arnold in 10 years and thor's in the corner of the stage or just there that doesn't seem unusual or the head judge something like that for for events that all seems believable but yeah i don't know i don't know it's it'll it will be interesting to see what the next few years hold for Thor, like where his career opportunities take him. Yeah. So what do you think about the boxing match? Well, that's the thing.
Starting point is 00:29:33 Let's read some ads, and then we'll go in on that boxing match a little more. Yeah. Okay, good. Today's show is brought to you by Lifting Large. Spud Inc. calls it the Cartoon Dumbbell Handle because they can hold a ridiculous amount of weight. They have loaded it up to 525 pounds. Can you one arm row that? Probably not. No. These things are jacked for a simple dumbbell. For years, 200 pound dumbbells were about the heaviest available and they were always awkward to press. With the new Spud Inc. And today's show is also brought to you by Texas Power Bars. Buddy Caps first started lifting weights in the late 60s
Starting point is 00:32:19 and began powerlifting in the mid 70s. At the time, he was working for Image Barbell building gym equipment. Around 1976, a local machine shop started making Olympic bars for them, calling it the Image Bar. In 1977, Image Barbell became Champion Barbell. It was then that Buddy started looking at the bars with an intent of changing them for the better. In 1979, Buddy bought his first lathe to begin addressing the known issues. In 1980, his passion, drive, and purpose now had a greater mission.
Starting point is 00:32:53 Buddy set out on his own to make what he believed was the greatest bar he had ever trained with, and the Texas Power Bar was born. It was strong as a house, with the best knurling, and was maintenance-free. Hundreds of state, national, international, massonomics, and world powerlifting records have been set and continue to be set and broken on the Texas Power Bar. All right, so addressing the fight, looking at this fight now, how is that going to go?
Starting point is 00:33:25 I'm curious. So there's a few things. One in general, I think people would say that MMA is, is more popular than boxing. Now I think boxing is on a little bit of an uptick from where it was, you know, the past several years, but I still think most people, if you talk to a lot of people, how many have watched a boxing fight versus an MMA fight in the last six months, I think you would get a considerably higher number for MMA fights. Maybe that's just anecdotal, but I think that that would be much higher.
Starting point is 00:33:56 So I was kind of surprised they went with boxing instead of MMA. I think an MMA fight would be more exciting with those guys, but there's also it's probably more dangerous for them to be doing mma too and then when you look at the size for 400 pound amateurs when you're getting leg kicks in and then when you look at the size difference too we don't know where they're going to come in at uh we do know that right now thor is significantly bigger than any hall right i don't think it's in either one of their advantages to be putting on weight for this i know you would think they're going to be sizing down but with boxing reach i should
Starting point is 00:34:37 actually say right away i know almost nothing about boxing so this is coming from the total layman perspective but uh reach i believe is an important part of the sport and thor has to have eddie hall beat by a lot there right you would sure think so eddie's like six two six three and thor's like six nine so yeah definitely and the yeah the weight thing is going to be interesting but i also believe that once you're over 300 pounds uh a 300 pound man throwing a proper punch i don't think it really matters if you're at that point 325 350 or 400 for that matter if it connects it's gonna connect right yeah uh yeah what i think they've got to lose weight i would i would assume they both have to but what i picture what i worry about as a boxing match is anyone that's even just like joked around and done a
Starting point is 00:35:33 little bit of something like that or like or uh i know it's not an ma but anyone that's done any like brazilian jiu-jitsu or anything like that any type of that stuff it might not look like with boxing like they're doing that much but for unconditioned athletes or very large people they are going to be so tired like so quickly like within 10 to 15 seconds they are going to be gassed of throwing punches at each other i yes. Especially in their current state, the only thing there is the fight is a year and a half out. A year and a half. And these guys are world-class athletes without a doubt.
Starting point is 00:36:14 So what type of package can they put together in a year and a half? And if they really are going all in on this fight, I think they could make some pretty drastic changes in their physique, their conditioning. And there's going make some pretty drastic changes in their physique their conditioning and i mean there's going to be some drastic changes in their strength too they're not going to hang on to the type of strength that especially that thor has at this moment it's just not a thing yeah but as far but you also don't want it yeah they do these guys have money they they know what it takes to be the best i i'm assuming they're going to have coaches and they're going to come in looking like real boxers i it's it would be like an embarrassment
Starting point is 00:36:50 if they go in just looking like guys that are just throwing haymakers and crazy punches and looking untrained that would be a total bust i think right but you wonder though a year and a half of fighting still there's a lot of guys that i think box what have you been doing the whole lifetime your life yeah they're they've been doing it because they're also they stuck with it because they're the good ones too you're right and so you still wonder like uh is it still gonna look kind of amateurish when these guys are in there doing it and is it the novelty factor is that why it's gonna be is that why it's gonna be successful and have money behind it and is it the novelty factor is that why it's going to be is that why it's going to be successful and have money behind it or is it going to be actually entertaining and i don't i
Starting point is 00:37:30 don't know what's going to happen there yeah and like so the novelty of it is that they're both huge and they're both former world's strongest men but if they do train for a year and a half of it and let's say they even get a little bit better but i believe they're going to have to lose a lot of weight and they'll lose a lot of size and muscle and all of a sudden instead of thor being 450 if he's like 69 and 360 and eddie loses 50 pounds or whatever it is but the novelty of it is that they're huge and all of a sudden i mean granted that's that's they'll still be big they'll still still going to be big guys but like the novelty of it is that they're the biggest guys in the world the
Starting point is 00:38:09 biggest and strongest guys in the world and like in order to do it decently they are going to train themselves to not be the biggest and strongest guys in the world anymore so it's kind of funny to me like like in order to even just do it decently they have to stop being what makes this uh in any way interesting to begin with of like well you know like they they are popular and known because they are the strong two two of the strongest men in the world of all time you know and it's like for the boxing not to completely suck they have to quit being that for the boxing not to completely suck, they have to quit being that and try to be boxers.
Starting point is 00:38:47 So it's kind of like a catch-22. Yeah, the whole thing of why they're in the spot they're in, they kind of have to shed that to do this next thing. But the poster is billing it as the heaviest boxing match in history, and unless you had just straight-up obese guys, I have a hard time believing that that's not the case. Right. So it's a long ways out i wouldn't be surprised if some details around the fight change or something changes in the situation a little bit but um it will be interesting to see just even what happens with thor during this time like do we does he lose 60 pounds and if that's
Starting point is 00:39:24 the case you would you do assume that strong man is either out of the picture or a long ways out at that point right and I get I would also say I get it for both of them like I would do it too I would want the money you know if you're talking a million dollars sign me up for it yeah and they both have huge audiences so right i i think a lot of times with pay-per-views it's it's totally built you know i mean not even think it is built on how many pay-per-views you can sell well these guys have enormous audiences built in so they can advertise and market and sell this thing like crazy um so yeah i would assume that they're both assuming if if it doesn't even go
Starting point is 00:40:05 well from a fight standpoint, they probably both stand to make millions and millions and millions of dollars. Yep. Yep. Yep. I, I would do it too. If I, I would definitely do it, but I guess the part that sucks is that the thing they're good at, the sport that they're both good at strong man, can't make them enough money to get them to continue to do strongman.
Starting point is 00:40:27 They have to go do this sport that neither of them even fucking do in order to make the money. That's what people will pay to watch. This thing that they're not even good at is what it'd be like. I mean, you could just pick any sport out and be like no no it's it's uh i don't know table tennis that's what we're gonna see what who's better at yeah that's what people want because it pays more and it has like this circus sideshow thing so people are interested yeah right yeah i'll never blame them for chasing the money though no me either i you know i would do that 10 times out of 10 yeah who are we to judge really
Starting point is 00:41:06 uh should we talk a little business news in the in the world of fitness culture uh yes our business segment our business segment uh this segment doesn't roll around too often so people should appreciate that that it's here uh the business news this week is Gold's Gym is filing for bankruptcy and potentially even 24-hour fitness. And these are big names in the national gym chain. Commercial gym. In that game, these guys are big players in it. And with Gold's Gym, there's not a ton of details at this moment,
Starting point is 00:41:48 but obviously it's due to the coronavirus situation. And it says, Tanner, you maybe know more about this than me, but it says they filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Is that different than Chapter 11 bankruptcy? No, I think what they're saying is Chapter 11 bankruptcy. But what's important to know about chapter like someone you if you just hear that someone's filing for bankruptcy, you have a tendency maybe to assume that they're going out of business, that they're not going to continue to exist as a business. But that's what I wondered. I didn't know what what what form of bankruptcy that they were
Starting point is 00:42:25 filing for, but Chapter 11 is a reorganization bankruptcy. So basically what they're doing is petitioning the court for them to explain that they have a way to do some restructuring to hopefully be able to continue to do business. So their creditors are forced to almost hang out and take a step back for a minute and can't force them to pay those amounts owed right away all up front. They can't call those notes due. So it gives them a chance to be able to restructure some assets or sell some things and pay some things off and and gives them a certain period of time to be able to go through the bankruptcy court and get those things paid in a way that's more advantageous for them to have
Starting point is 00:43:16 more time to be able to try to make it work so basically trying to get a blessing to say i just need to write some ious for now and I'll get back to you when I can. Well, yeah, and it's kind of the creditors get screwed a little bit. You know, the people that owe them money could get screwed a little bit. And that's kind of the shitty part for someone that borrows money. But that's also part of the risk of borrowing people money. And they could still pay off all of their debts and then it could work for them. They could come through it and be a financially successful business still.
Starting point is 00:43:55 It could just be a smaller business or they could do something different than what they're doing right now. But what I would say is it doesn't mean that they're going away. But part of that, there has to be some significant change in there like the the they're not going to be allowed to file for chapter 11 bankruptcy and just say yeah we're not doing anything different you know like we're just going to keep losing money the way we have been for the last 10 years or whatever but so they must be closing didn't you say they're closing some locations it says it says last month they uh they closed about 30 company-owned gyms. But right here it says they have 700 gyms worldwide.
Starting point is 00:44:29 So that's still a somewhat small percentage when you look at it from that standpoint. But yeah, they closed the gyms. It said to maintain the strength and growth of the potential of the brand as well as ensure the continued viability of the company for decades to come. Gold's Gym is a huge brand. And I mean, just a brand alone, it's a, whether there's a gym or not, it is a brand. So it seems hard to believe that you couldn't find a way to, for that to make money, whether that's closing down a lot of gyms or not. I don't think it's going to be disappearing permanently.
Starting point is 00:45:03 No, I don't think so. But we even talked about it in a, you know, probably a month or so back in one of our episodes is what the hell is going to happen. You know, like how, how affected are these, um, globo gyms like this going to be by this shutdown and everything like that. And obviously this is a factor in what's going on here. You know, there's no doubt that this has played a role in them having to take these steps, you know, so it is affecting at least some of them, uh, significantly. And the other name in that, on that list was 24 hour fitness. And we don't have 24,
Starting point is 00:45:37 we don't have gold's gym around us either, but we don't have you ever been to either of them before. I have not been to either one. Um, I i i don't think there's really any for sure there's none within hundreds of miles of us i'm not sure if there's many in our part of the country even really is there no none none that i know really no i don't think so but we know the type of gym yeah yeah yeah and those are those are big big fitness chains so chains. So it's getting to them. And I wouldn't be surprised to see a few weeks down the road or months if there's other big fitness chains added on to this, places like Snap and Anytime Fitness or even Lifetime Fitness.
Starting point is 00:46:17 Those are all other big names. And I could see how those could be. They probably are feeling the pinch right now. And who knows, depending on how long things go on, they could be right in this group with them and they're just like everyone else right now still nobody nobody really knows anything almost like nobody knows how long they could be affected and even like if they're not forced to be shut down if they can be open what are their customer what choices are their customers gonna make at that point you know and yeah and that's the thing yeah if just because you have a gym and you have the blessing to be open i still think a lot of people aren't going to go a lot of people are going to be hesitant
Starting point is 00:46:53 to be doing things like this right so just saying like oh it'll open it up and that'll take care of it i i don't think that's the magical answer it probably will make things easier but you're not going to be back to 100 of your of your pre-pandemic sales no no no no and this is a little off topic but it's something i do start to think more and more about is like the large crowd things oh i mean it could apply to us in the arnold next year i i think people are got like people will go i hope by that point in time people are going to things as far as we're concerned at the arnold but like how long like a concert for example where you know you go to a big concert where there's ten thousand five thousand people how long is it going to take before not before they can start having them but before there's enough people that are all like ah good
Starting point is 00:47:40 enough like i like like like good with it like where like that gross sweaty person can run by you and bump into you. And it's, and you're not immediately like, because of their grossness and sweatiness, but like thinking that there's some disease carrier too. Right, right, right.
Starting point is 00:47:55 How, like the longer this goes, it seems like that's going to take a while for those really big, uh, set, you know, those like where there's thousands of people in one place. I know. Ah, just six months ago the world was just such a simple place wasn't it that's isn't that so true I mean that's a joke but also it is like way different it's funny how much different the
Starting point is 00:48:17 world is in that short a period usually you say like ah the 90s such a simple time or the early 2000s and now it's like just a few months ago. February. A few months ago. January 2020, what a simple time that was. Yeah, yeah. To just do what we wanted. No one had a care in the world besides what they were going to spend more dumb money on. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:39 The world changed in a hurry. Like lift shorts. Exactly, like lift shorts. We are getting down there on time. Should we hop into some over-under, Tanner? Oh, yes. Assuming this wasn't the episode that we weren't going to break the streak. No, we got the streak is alive. And now this is probably after the Road to 200 podcast reviews update.
Starting point is 00:49:02 This is maybe now the second most favorite segment on the massonomics podcast uh with of course the the update on road to 200 being the most favorite okay so overrated underrated here um i'm going to call an audible on topic number one as i'm reading it just made me think of something else so that the current topic number one is going to get pushed in next week and replaced with something else. We've got a regular Peyton Manning over here. Yeah, Omaha, Omaha. So remember that I said this.
Starting point is 00:49:34 So next week you'll laugh at what the replacement here was. There'll be a funny correlation. So we'll have to remember to discuss that. So topic number one for this week is Jimmy Buffett, overrated or underrated. Jimmy Buffett. Are we talking about a Margaritaville or Jimmy Buffett? You know, as far as I'm concerned,
Starting point is 00:49:58 a Margaritaville has almost overtaken Jimmy Buffett as far as what the man is. I mean, he has his own margarita maker. You can get a Margaritaville margarita blender. That's peak performance right there. And we do like discussing home appliances on this show too, so that fits in pretty nicely. Jimmy Buffett really does fit in that middle-class fancy.
Starting point is 00:50:21 Yes. Vibe. Category of things i'm trying to mar margarita ville i spilt it wrong the first time here and i got margaretville in like new york okay margaritaville um yep okay i just had to confirm it is a restaurant did you know that tanner no no yeah he has i'm not surprised though yeah um according to google their uh google business listing it is a bar and grill inspired by the jimmy buffett song with seafood burgers drinks amid tropical decor so
Starting point is 00:50:55 margarita i think margaritaville is a little overrated uh it is it is jimmy buffett and margarita yeah yeah all right sorry sorry jimmy buffett yeah i think i think jimmy buffett is a little overrated uh outside of margaritaville i know almost nothing about him which makes i know he does a lot of like corporate uh yeah yeah like fancy corporate expensive retreat thing to me it's just like he really just panders to white old guys or white guys in their 50s plus. Which I guess maybe that's understanding your target market and just doubling down on that. But outside of, I don't know if he has a whole
Starting point is 00:51:44 lot of range and variety um i i think jimmy buffett is a i think jimmy buffett's a little overrated well there goes all of our white 50 year old plus male listeners did you know margaritaville is from 1977 no wow i i didn't know the song had been around that long that's at least 10 years older than i would have guessed i yeah i to me if you said early 90s or even late 80s i would yeah i would say like 91 yeah like when i think of 70s music margaritaville isn't really what comes to mind no huh yeah so overrated jimmy buffett jimmy buffett is overrated okay topic number two overrated or underrated the fast and the furious franchise this is one of those tough ones because financially they're huge successes you know there's no doubt
Starting point is 00:52:46 about that the rock is a part of it vin diesel universally loved vin diesel is vin diesel the late paul the late paul walker the late paul walker was a part of many of them uh growing up i could tell you absolutely i was a huge fan of the movies on and off but i think that i think the franchise is a little overrated um have you kept up with them lately no i haven't either i've maybe seen one that the rocks in honestly i think i've only i for sure have seen one maybe two it just it just, they don't pop up. It's not that I wouldn't watch it, though. I would watch probably, I bet they're all entertaining.
Starting point is 00:53:30 I bet they're all good, kind of. I'm not debating that if I sat down and watched, that it'd be a solid two hours of entertainment. I don't doubt that for a second. I think that they're probably a little overrated, though. What about Tokyo Drift? I don't think I've ever seen Tokyo Drift, actually. I think that was the first a little overrated though. What about Tokyo drift? I don't think I've ever seen Tokyo drift. I think that was the first one that I was like,
Starting point is 00:53:48 ah, this is getting, it just feels like they're beating a dead horse now. And that was already like the third or fourth one only. Wasn't it? Yeah. Yeah. But they,
Starting point is 00:53:56 they switched gears though. They're like, it was start, it was taking that trend of like, like you said, just beating a dead horse and being like, what more can we milk out of this? Like, who can we get to just be in this and milk more money out of this and then like there was some period in time where i quit watching but where they must have redid something and like got
Starting point is 00:54:14 the rock maybe it's just maybe it's just they got the rock and then they like redid it yeah and like then it was cool again almost like that it was kind of getting not cool, and they just made it cool again. Yeah, which makes it seem like, well, the most important thing seems like it should be having a story, and if your story is so dependent on who is the person, who is the actor in the story, maybe it doesn't have enough legs to just be on its own. But yeah, absolutely, they're entertaining,
Starting point is 00:54:44 but I do think that they're a little overrated yeah okay in that same vein to a certain degree actually overrated or underrated lamborghinis lamborghinis i don't know if lamborghinis are featured much on fast and furious that's not a topic because of that but uh now that I think about it, Lamborghinis is not altogether completely different there. You know, have you ever been in one in your life, Tanner? I have not. I haven't either, and I would love to be in one. Even if I couldn't drive it, just to be in one would be cool.
Starting point is 00:55:16 It would be really cool to drive one, too. Yes. But are they overrated or underrated? They kind of are at that pinnacle. You know, if people said, oh, really, really nice car, most people would, if you said name like three names, they would say Ferrari, Lamborghini. And maybe now with how much they get called out.
Starting point is 00:55:34 Yeah, maybe Tesla. I feel like with rap songs, you'd hear something about like a Rolls Royce or a Wraith or something like that. You know, those things get called out in rap songs a lot. Do people still talk about Bentleys? Yeah, I think Bentleys do too. But as far as supercars go, it's Ferrari and Lamborghini.
Starting point is 00:55:57 Bugattis get a lot of hype around too. Being overrated or underrated, though, that is tricky. They kind of are at the pinnacle. So you kind of say they're up there. It's something I personally have zero experience with. And they also cost like $400,000. They cost, I wouldn't even be surprised if they're more than that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:56:29 But Lamborghini, I'll say overrated i'll say overrated okay i don't even know what like the current models of lamborghini like what different lamborghini i think huracan is maybe one that they still make like i you know i'm not up on what their current models are either let's uh let's find out really quick here they are i'm going with her models okay okay they have i'm probably gonna say these yep huracan if that's how you say it urus which is like their suv looks pretty cool actually uh then they have the uh is it the aventador yes i think that's right yep yep yep yeah so it's really like three models god they do look really cool they do look really cool. They do look really cool.
Starting point is 00:57:06 Like there is no doubt that it looks really, really cool. I think Lamborghinis look cooler than Ferraris. Like Ferraris also look really cool, but as far as supercars go, Lamborghinis have like the supercar look to me. What even is in the Ferrari lineup right now? I'm curious just because i haven't paid attention to like high-end cars in quite a while here ferrari makes way more cars
Starting point is 00:57:30 though um yeah yeah uh seeing the ferrari names are never as cool like it's like the 812 are they numbers usually yeah yeah 812 super fast uh right what do they have here 812 super fast 812 gts sf90 f8 f8 f88 or sorry 488 um yeah none of those are as memorable as as aventador you know like it's not uh doesn't pop f8 spider sounds kind of cool i mean i'll give yeah i think spider for ferrari just means it's the convertible if i remember is that what it is yep there we go Ferrari just means it's the convertible. If I remember right. Is that what it is? Yep. There we go.
Starting point is 00:58:06 I think spider just means convertible. The hard top just flipped back. You're right. Yeah. I'm still going to say Lamborghini is a little overrated, but it's still an awesome car from look, styling, engineering. I just wish I had some experience personally with one of them, and then I could really offer some real...
Starting point is 00:58:30 Maybe we could rent one if we sell a few more pairs of lift shorts there we go yeah go to like vegas get one of those where you rent and just drive it up and down the strip at 10 miles an hour yep okay so last topic for today on Overrated Underrated. Saying dinner. Saying dinner. Dinner. Saying dinner versus supper, I think, is what you're getting at here, Tanner. Well, that's part of it, but some people might say dinner versus lunch. Oh, see, I don't. Okay, if we're going to say dinner lunch to me that's wrong that's wrong all
Starting point is 00:59:09 the time like shouldn't say dinner if you wanted to say dinner break i'd maybe cut you some slack there but dinner to me is always the last meal of the day lunch is always the middle meal if you want to say dinner break people understand that that's a break that you take usually during work, which is typically in the middle of the day. I would make that leap, but like, let's go get dinner at lunchtime. I don't, I don't like that. It just doesn't sit right with me there. But if I'm thinking like the Midwest thing is people in the Midwest, it's supper, you know, supper is at nighttime. I usually think I say, I don't even know what I say. I feel like I say dinner more, but I don't know for a fact if I do that or not. I feel like I do. But dinner, are we saying the word here or like the fact of
Starting point is 00:59:58 eating? Because eating is always underrated without a doubt. yeah no using the word and dinner in replace of the alternatives i think so this would dinner in every other part of the world is probably overrated to say it dinner in saying dinner in the midwest is probably underrated though so because we live in the midwest i think i'll say dinner is on saying dinner is underrated i think underrated i i did i cheated and did a little research on what dinner because that seems to be a we're almost like a worldwide controversy on some level of like what is dinner and what i came to learn is that dinner is not time of the day specific. The broadest definition of dinner is that it is, the reason some people say it for lunch
Starting point is 01:00:50 and some people can use it for evening time, is it is not necessarily related to the time of the day. It is your largest meal of the day. Where lunch and supper, lunch is specific to that noonish time supper is specific to evening time but those are both also broadly considered smaller meals if you say supper that is a a smaller meal lunch is a smaller meal dinner is your big meal biggest meal of the day like your big meal so if someone generally eats that over noon they could call that dinner where if they more so eat that in the evening which i think
Starting point is 01:01:34 would be more common you would call that dinner but that's what i learned is that dinner really is not time specific that logic totally makes sense but i think almost no one knows that no i don't think so i think uh it's people grew up whatever they grew up like in their household that's what they go by hear what you hear yeah that's what that's what you went with but yeah i'll still say it is underrated underrated is that what i said the first time is that what i said you kind of said overrated in general but underrated here okay yeah i said the first time is that what i said you kind of said overrated in general but underrated here okay yeah i'm still i'm sticking with underrated okay underrated all right a great set of overrated underrated topics today i think we really hammered out some important
Starting point is 01:02:17 things there we did yeah uh beyond that make sure to come stop at our store we haven't really talked about our store we've mentioned the lift shorts a few times but the newest things were the white lift shirt and the white uh blue ribbon shirt that we've got the white lift shirts probably almost sold out and we're not getting more of those at least for the time being so you might be sol if you haven't ordered one of those yet but there is some in a few sizes pbr i think is mostly in stock in most sizes our blue ribbon shirt is mostly in stock in most sizes so you could snag that the other thing that's just crazy still is the banners banners they still we said it last week we got shipments of all of them in and while we were talking today they just started disappearing so yeah who knows with those yeah we did start carrying the yeah buddy banner but we
Starting point is 01:03:07 basically sold out like the day we started carrying that on hand but we'll get more of them again and we did restock all of our shorts lift shorts lift shorts 2.0 and deadlifter shorts as of right now are still available in all sizes they are selling pretty quick but as of right now as i say this you could snag any of those in any size if you are lucky enough to be able to afford them so there you go key thing to remember there the affordability beyond all that with all that in mind we are working on something else really cool for our summerish drop i guess is what you are yep the summer season is coming along nicely behind the scenes. Yeah, we have a pretty huge drop prepared of things and a variety of things. I don't know if everything will be at the same time or how the timing works out,
Starting point is 01:03:54 but we do just have some really cool stuff that we're pretty excited about. Yeah, I know I'm excited about it. Yeah. I don't get excited about much, Tanner.
