Episode Date: November 27, 2015

Dave wants to memorize the topics of the book of Romans. I present the methods and some sample mnemonics for memorizing all the topics covered in each chapter of Romans, including how to memorize the ...references of all the key verses. Starting point is 00:00:00 Master of Memory 450 Welcome to Master of Memory. I'm Timothy, and I'm here to answer your accelerated learning questions every day, and to inspire and empower you to learn anything you want to learn faster than ever. Dave expressed interest in memorizing the key verses of the Book of Romans. Dave is working on memorizing all the topics of the chapters of the New Testament, sort of like described in the previous episode about Titus, and he asked to start with Romans. Now, I've always been interested in using Central Park as a memory palace
Starting point is 00:00:34 to memorize the Book of Romans, Central Park, New York City. And so what I'm going to describe here is basically how you can divide Central Park up into 16 different areas and then associate the key verses with each of those areas. Each chapter has two, three, or four key verses I would say because it covers about three topics each. And I'm gonna list my key verses that I've selected along with the general locations that you can store them in, but the mnemonics will be mostly up to you. I will use chapter 8 first as an example of sort of how you can do these mnemonics in order to
Starting point is 00:01:09 associate these verses with these locations, but if you want to get more specific and create more mnemonics for the rest of the book, just shoot me an email at timothy at masterofmemory.com, and Dave and I are already collaborating on this, so I may have more ideas by the time you've emailed me. First of all, let's start with chapter 8 and talk about some of the example mnemonics that you might use. Location 8 for me, going from north to south in Central Park, is going to be Belvedere Castle. And for me, there are four topics in chapter 8, and so there are four key verses. The first one is verse 2, which is about life in the Spirit, the fact that the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, gives us life as believers.
Starting point is 00:01:49 And so we have chapter 8, verse 2, and the location is the steps of the castle. So my object for the verse 2 is a snowball, and I would imagine that the snowball is giving life to someone on the steps of Belvedere Castle. The next verse is 8.14, which is about the fact that we're sons of God and heirs with Christ. And my location for this is the courtyard going up into the castle. So we're on the big courtyard now. And verse 14 for me is a tire. And so I would imagine that the tire is rolling away from the castle and it has a bunch of little people inside it. So we are sons of God or children or heirs that are kind of proceeding from the castle. So now I can immediately think of verse two for the snow and remember the fact of the spirit of life. And then I have verse 14 because of the tire, because I've associated
Starting point is 00:02:45 the tire with the number 14, and I associate the tire with being heirs of God when it's here on the courtyard. Next we'll go inside the castle. The topic is the glory that's to be revealed. We're waiting for the revelation of the glory of God and of the heirs of God. This is inside the castle, so that's a little bit shadowy. And the object for the number 18 is toffee. So imagine toffee, melted toffee dripping down the windows as we're inside the castle waiting for the glory from the outside. That's how I'm going to represent it. Next, we have a passage that's just talking about God's love. And the verse is, if God is for us, who can be against us? That's verse 31. For me, the object for 31 is mud. And so we're up on the upper balcony of the castle and we're standing
Starting point is 00:03:33 actually in a puddle of mud. And the idea is that we're stuck there. We're in God's love and nobody else can get there because the mud is running down the sides and preventing anyone else from getting up there. So we're stuck in God's love and we're protected. If God is for us, who can be against us? So you can see now that I have the whole chapter of, you know, Romans 8 laid out in my mind. I have the snowball on the steps that represents, in verse 2 for the snowball, the spirit of life. And then on the courtyard, we have the tire rolling away from the castle. That's verse 14. And it represents that we're sons and heirs with Christ of life. And then on the courtyard, we have the tire rolling away from the castle. That's verse
Starting point is 00:04:05 14, and it represents that we're sons and heirs with Christ of God. And then inside the castle, we have the toffee, verse 18, and that represents the glory that's to be revealed. And then proceeding up to go to the balcony at the top of the castle, we have the mud that we're stuck in for verse 31, representing God's love. You can apply this to the whole rest of the book of Romans. Now, there are 16 chapters, and I'm just going to list the key verses along with the locations that I'd like to use with them. And Dave and I will be collaborating to create mnemonics for these just so we can memorize this on our own
Starting point is 00:04:39 and eventually, hopefully, release some materials for the rest of you as well. But if you're interested in it, shoot me an email. But here are the locations that I would use in Central Park, and here are the verses. So in chapter 1, I would use Lasker Rink, the skating rink, and we have chapter 1, verse 7, chapter 1, verse 13, chapter 1, verse 17, and then verse 18. Then we have the Harlem Mirror going a little further east. We have chapter 2 verses 3 and 12 in two different locations at the mirror. Then at the Conservatory Garden for chapter 3, we have verses 5, 9, and 28. Then in the whole area north of 97th Street, which cuts across the park, we have verses 3 and 13 of chapter 4 about Abraham. Then for chapter 5, we have the reservoir,
Starting point is 00:05:27 and the key verses are verse 1 and verse 18. Then sixth, we have the great lawn, where we'll store verses 14 and 22 of chapter 6. For chapter 7, we have the turtle pond, and we have verses 4 and 8 as our key verses. Then of course for chapter 8, we have Belvedere Castle, and we have verses 4 and 8 as our key verses. Then, of course, for chapter 8, we have Belvedere Castle, which we've already gone over. Then at number 9, we have The Ramble, and my key verses there are 16 and 32. Then we have Central Park Lake, one of my favorite places in the world, and we have verses 2 and 12 of chapter 10. And then we have chapter 11, the Alice in Wonderland display statue thing, and we have verses 5, 24, and 32. Then is Conservatory Pond, where we have verses 1, 5, and 21 of chapter 12. Then chapter 13 will be at Bethesda Terrace, where verse 1 will probably
Starting point is 00:06:20 be at the fountain, and then the other key verse, verse 10, will be at the terrace itself. For chapter 14, we have the mall, which is the avenue that is a pedestrian avenue, runs down the middle of Central Park, south of Bethesda Fountain and Terrace. And we have verses 4 and 13. Then we have the Central Park pond for chapter 15, where we'll store verses 5, 8, 20, and 24. And then finally, we have the enormous playground area and the things around that at the southwest area of the park for verses 16, 20, and 27 of chapter 16. The beauty of this is that with just a little bit of mnemonic work, we can just think through Central Park and think of all of the topics covered by Romans along with key verses and their references to support those topics. Plus, if we want, we can memorize the rest of
Starting point is 00:07:12 Romans between those key verses simply by storing more mnemonic objects and verses in between.
