Master of Memory: Accelerated learning, education, memorization - MMem 0463: Memorize 1 Peter using a memory palace
Episode Date: December 16, 2015Gene wants to memorize the book of 1 Peter. I present mnemonic examples that I myself would use to memorize 1 Peter, emphasizing the storage of key verses in a memory palace. What do you want to learn...? Leave your question at http://MasterOfMemory.com/. Music credit: Maurice Ravel’s String Quartet, 2nd movement, performed by the US Army Band.

Master of Memory 463.
Welcome to Master of Memory.
I'm Timothy, and I'm here to answer your accelerated learning questions every day
and to inspire and empower you to learn anything you want to learn faster than ever.
Jean asked about memorizing 1 Peter.
Now, for those of you who think that this episode is going to be predictable,
I'm actually going to introduce a new mnemonic concept
that I haven't really talked much about in these episodes before. And so I will talk about memorizing 1st
Peter in particular, but I'm going to recommend a little bit of a tactic that I haven't really
talked about before for distinguishing different areas in your memory palace from each other.
So as we did with Colossians a few episodes ago, we have four chapters in 1st Peter,
and each of those chapters has about two
or three key verses. But to distinguish the four chapters, I would recommend not just putting them
in different rooms, but if you're willing to do it, putting each of those rooms in a sort of
environment or filling them with a kind of mood that distinguishes them as different from each other.
So we talk a lot on this episode about having different numbers represented by different objects,
so that whenever you see, let's say, a dish of acid,
you know that that's the number one.
If there's a snowball, you know that that's the number two.
If there's a semi-truck, you know that that's the number three, and so on.
But what if there was another category that,
well, you might just
have a few of these categories, but they actually represent the sort of environment that you're in,
regardless of where it is. And what I mean by that is you could say that it's snowing,
or that it's raining, so those are types of weather, or that it's hot and sunny,
or that the whole place is flooded, so that everything is underwater, or maybe it's hot and sunny, or that the whole place is flooded so that everything is underwater,
or maybe it's very dark and it's hard to see.
The thing is, you can take any room in your house and apply that to it by having the sun shining in the window
or having bright lights on the ceiling, I don't know, having rain falling down from the ceiling,
filling the whole room with water so that everything is floating around,
or setting everything on fire so that everything's burning up. And you can still use the same mnemonics that we talk about
in these episodes. We've just added yet another dimension to what we're doing so that you can
actually kind of distinguish your different areas and always know which chapter you're in.
What issue does this address? Well, specifically, if we're thinking about, let's say, a few episodes
ago where I talked about memorizing the verses, the key verses of Colossians, you have the verses,
but you have to remember the chapter numbers by which room you're in. And unless you find some
way to associate the number of the room with the room itself, it may be hard to remember. You might
have to count. Let's see, the bathroom is the third of those.
No, it's actually the fourth of those rooms.
And so you have to count a little bit.
But with this method, if you set one room on fire,
put another room underwater,
and make another room really dark,
then you can immediately remember,
if you associate those environments with their numbers,
for any book that you memorize
or any memory palace that you create
for something involving this type of number, that the dark room is always the one that ends with the
digit one. To apply this to First Peter, we'll imagine that our first room is pitch black. It's
very dark. So basically, although, I mean, you could imagine things visually and you probably
should, but imagine them as dark as you can, and imagine that with every event that happens,
the characters are having to grope their ways around
because they don't really see anything.
And then in the second room, it's actually very bright,
and it's hot with bright light.
If possible, the sun is shining horizontally in the window
as if the sun just came up after the last episode,
or the last room that we were in.
And then in the third room, it's very windy,
and it's kind of cold. There may be some sun, but the primary factor here is that there's
wind blowing through the room. And then for the fourth room, it's raining, or the fourth major
station in your palace for the fourth chapter. Now for this episode, Gene, I'm going to let you
create your own mnemonics instead of giving you the mnemonics that I come up with as I did a few episodes ago for Colossians.
But I'll still give you the key verses so that you can create those mnemonics and do them in these environments that I'm recommending that you use.
Chapter 1 is the dark chapter or the chapter in a dark environment in the first room of your memory palace.
So make that room very dark. And the first key verse is
verse one, where he's talking about the elect exiles of the dispersion. And then the third
verse is the next key verse, where he talks about being born again to a living hope. And then in the
last section, the key verse is verse 15, where he says, as he is holy, you also be holy.
So there we have 15, and whatever your object mnemonic is for that.
So obviously, as I mentioned a few episodes, you'll spread these throughout your room, but now make that room very dark, and always remember that the number 1 is for something that's dark.
And one way you can remember that, maybe, is that the reason I chose 1 to be dark
is that the number 1, or the be dark is that the number one or the
digit one represents T or D in the major system, and I wanted one of my environments to be dark,
so I chose it to be one for D. Okay, the second room is the one with a bright light, and it's
really hot, and the first of our two key verses is verse nine, where he talks about a royal priesthood
and proclaiming the excellencies
of the one who called them to the royal priesthood, the holy people. And so that's verse 9, and this
is in the bright room. And then verse 17 talks about honoring the emperor or the governing
authorities, and so that also is in the room with the bright light. And so see if you can find a way
to tie that to the number 17 and store it in the location the room with the bright light. And so see if you can find a way to tie that to the number 17
and store it in the location where there's the bright light.
Next, we have it cold and windy.
So there's a very dry wind, but it's blowing really hard in your third room.
And we have two key verses here.
The first one is verse 7, which talks about, you know,
honor between spouses as fellow heirs. So husbands honor
their wives as fellow heirs. And so that's verse 7, which for me is a sock. So I can kind of think
of what I would do with the wind and maybe the husband protecting his wife using a sock. So
husbands honor your wives as fellow heirs. And then verse 14, still in the cold wind, we have suffering for righteousness
sake. And so you'll use your object for 14. For me, that's a tire, but whatever it is for you.
In the room where there's a wind blowing and thinking about suffering for righteousness sake.
Next, our final room is full of rain. And so once again, I use the major system for this one. I
wanted rain in one of the rooms. And for me, the number four is er.
That's the major system.
So that's rain.
And we have two key verses here.
First, we're talking about being stewards of God's gifts of grace.
And that's verse 10.
And then verse 13, we have rejoicing in suffering.
And so once again, it has to do with suffering.
But in this case, rejoicing in suffering.
And the number is 13.
So verse 13 for me would be a dime.
Maybe somebody finds the rain is washing off a dime.
So even though he's suffering in the rain, he's happy that it's cleaning his coin.
So yeah, there we have it.
Once again, some key verses from a book of the New Testament where I present some of
the mnemonics that I would use and primarily in this case, presenting a new mnemonic idea that you might use to help you remember the different
chapters. Thanks for the question, Gene, and for all of you listeners, please check out
masterofmemory.com slash mandarin, because we have two days left for our Kickstarter project.
This project, our Mandarin course, is not just to create a free course for learning Mandarin,
which is something that's fairly lacking online, but it's also a way to get the ball rolling for further projects at Master
of Memory so that we can create more and more free courses for history, geography, our poetry
memorization course, and our biblical Greek course. Getting the word out about the Mandarin project
and getting it funded by Friday, December 18 is the best way that we can
get the ball rolling quickly on these other projects. And so just go to masterofmemory.com
slash Mandarin to find out about that. Meanwhile, what do you want to learn? The world's knowledge
