Mayday Plays - Chapter 2: "Atonement, Then Crime" | The Happy Eater | Tales From The Wildsea

Episode Date: July 3, 2026

In Redcrown, opportunity and danger go hand in hand. The crew of The Godsinger meet Lemo Saeve of The Timberflow Mercantile, who offers them a job with high stakes: pirates are strangling trade across... the Mesoreia, and he needs a daring crew to put an end to it. Before they can take on the contract, the crew seeks atonement from the Kingsman of Redcrown. As creepy as the Kingsman are, if Bebo, Kezza and Zin want to survive what’s coming, they’ll need every edge they can muster. Their plan to catch the pirates? An alluring brain pearl. But in Redcrown, that’s a dangerous mistake, and one that forces them to set sail sooner than planned. Disclaimer: This episode contains profanity, descriptions of disease, and drug use. You gotta figure though, they're starting to test the walls. I mean that close to something like that, you're so close to the edge of the city that you're taking out tourists on the way in.
Starting point is 00:01:39 And the festival's got a lot of people in one place at one time, a lot of people looking away while there's things to steal. Maybe we should check out that job for it. And Zinn just walks over to those jobs on the job board. It's easy enough to find every job board and every spit and settlement has the same green flag, a circular design with two currents moving in opposite directions, but parallel to one another. At the bottom of this flagpole is a large wooden platform where every kind of imaginable. job is listed. Members of crews
Starting point is 00:02:25 looking for additional crewmates, individuals living in the Mesirai, looking for help on their orchards and on their farms. But one piece of finely made pre-verdent paper catches
Starting point is 00:02:41 your eyes in the center of the job board. It is two pieces of paper, one stapled or pinned over the other. The first one is a wanted poster. It says wanted, Captain Oreck. Wild sailors needed to deal with mutinous pirates, generous reward. And if you just lift the paper underneath it, it says, Wild Sailors wanted for Decoy Mission to Stop Pirates, Standard, Reward. Both of them say, See Limo Save of the Timber Flow Mercantile. This is real. Part of
Starting point is 00:03:19 And Keza is like running his thumbs in between the paper just to feel it. He almost half considers taking it down from the job board, despite knowing what an egregious take that would be to remove. But sort of like weaving in the stock exchange like crowd that they're all combined in, he tries to get Bebo even closer to it. This is what they used to draw everything on. every single time you had to write a message, it was on one of these thin little pieces of urgency. Bebo takes a look at it closely, like intense close-up, where you can see just the thinness of a paper and, like, three of his eyes stacked up. And he takes a moment with it, almost meditative. And then one of his limbs reaches into his satchel and his hands close around this paper mache figure that he carries with him and has done.
Starting point is 00:04:17 And so since you've known him, you've seen it many times he's taking it out and like turn it around and treats it with a lot of reverence that he does on other items. And he just kind of like rumps his thumb over the face of the figure and says, wow. So it's old and precious. Oh, yeah. Hard to come by too. I mean, look how white it is. It hasn't even been touched by Cressor. Which of these do you believe our rivals have taken on?
Starting point is 00:04:45 Knowing them, they're probably ditching the decoy for the... Well, it's hard to read Slow Beard sometimes. I mean, he acts like he's big talk, and then he waits right behind you to steal victory at the last second. Bebo whirls around to look in case they're standing there, quite literally. There is a pair of children who are kind of about to touch your back legs, Bebo, but then they see you... He's the same expression, Frozen.
Starting point is 00:05:15 Ah! They run off. He skitters behind his... Why are we screaming? What happened? Are you okay? I'm okay. It's not the captain. His spies? I think so. I don't fucking trust any of them, he says, echoing you from before.
Starting point is 00:05:35 What do you think, Zinn? Is this the one? I mean, it's not the fuckers who came in on us in the beginning, but if they're printing it on parchment, the word here is... Good. I will take stock of both jobs, and then we can see how much the ship parts cost, and depending on that, we will take the appropriate job. All right. Let's hunt this guy down, then, and see what's what? Agreed.
Starting point is 00:05:59 Keza is going to take any of the available information from those two pieces on where best to meet with this individual, and then try and search around this, like, massive, crowd. area and weave through the bodies to try and find. Usually around job boards, there are for such often travelers, a nap of the city you're in, the community you're in. And I'm going to try and find that and triangulate just how to find this individual. It's clear that the timber flow mercantile is a trading outfit you will likely find near the shipyard.
Starting point is 00:06:39 Okay, this works out great. Two birds, one stone. Kess is going to start moving out in that direction if there's nothing else. Capable, you'd be drawing us the entire way. You're after you... Well, where'd he go? Zenko steps out from behind your massive frames
Starting point is 00:06:56 and his head seemingly just a plank of wood with pieces of nautical accoutrement kind of glued to it and a big tricorn hat hiding the fact that there's things hidden underneath him. But it looks at you with a similar blank. expression to what you have Zinn and says, I'm here to help however you need. I'm happy to follow along or if you need me back at the ship.
Starting point is 00:07:19 You'd let me know. Well, of course, you're welcome to come along, Captain. I can't remember the last time you went ground with us. It's been a while. I would like to stretch my sea legs if I could. And he stretches these kind of rotting blue feet with long toenails on them. I am gonna need to replace these limbs at some point.
Starting point is 00:07:39 We'll put that on the to-do. I'm sure there's a... Zellicray somewhere selling them. Yeah, it's a great place to find spare limbs here, I would think. People tend to lose them here. That's fair. That they do. At that moment, the three of you notice,
Starting point is 00:07:55 most of the individuals over the age of 10, in fact, are missing limbs or eyes or ears. Many individuals have replaced limbs with mechanical parts. It seems like losing limb is common here. in Red Cromb. I do not think I like it here. That's because you didn't have the fruit. It's really good. Again, I do not eat, Bieber.
Starting point is 00:08:23 You're in the right camp here with me, Zinn. You and I, we didn't know what this place is really like. Let's just go to the shipyard. In case their spies come back, he says, scanning the crowd for sights of more children looking at him. The four of you begin making your way, the shipyard being a particular section of Midway. that is both on the top of the canopy and well below.
Starting point is 00:08:47 And as you move below, you can see you're now under many of the ships with individuals, sometimes one-armed, sometimes multi-armed, working on the holes, repairing, replacing, and fixing them. Eventually, you come to a door of a building that is both above and below the canopy, and using recovered pieces of Billboard reads Timberflow
Starting point is 00:09:18 Mercantile Zenko speaks up and says the mercantile, Timberfell Merchantile's been around well as long as I can remember but one of the oldest shipping companies around it'd be good to get in their good graces. Do you know anything
Starting point is 00:09:33 about that guy on the parchment? Limo? I can't say I know too much. I've heard the name though. The recent, he's the most recent kind of head of shipping logistics. Again, a good person to know. Okay.
Starting point is 00:09:50 Ectus, I know that, they're Ectus. Oh, all right, so we should be on our best behavior. This could be a good person to know. I think Keza's going to knock on the door, use an old hand knock, just on the outside, like shave and a haircut. and see if anyone comes to the door. The door swings open, revealing a ardent man, his mechanical arm being the one that opens it up,
Starting point is 00:10:24 and he welcomes you in without much of a word. Hi. Who are you here to see? Lima? Lima, yeah, follow me. And he leads you deeper into the building. Old nautical charts and accoutical charts and accoutre. from previous adventures, lying the walls, the skull of some kind of strange Leviathan hangs over the head.
Starting point is 00:10:49 It's musty and dusty in here, but clearly a lot of experience has come through these halls. See, Bebo, when we retire, this is what we're going to look like. This is what happens when you live long enough to rest. I can see it, although I don't know if I ever want to rest. I want to keep going. Maybe take all this stuff with me. He begins to run his tendrils over the wall, kind of touching all of the things.
Starting point is 00:11:18 And when his little mushroom hand lands on something particularly interesting, he's going to try to pocket it. There is a casing of firefly bulbs dangling there, and you are able to pick it off without issue. There's a twist, though. The twist is that they react. to the psychoactive properties of my spores, taking them in, absorbing them in the jar, and they become carriers of these psychoactive materials.
Starting point is 00:11:56 Now it held within this jar. You step into a new room. This one also lined with a Kuthramon, but there's a desk in the center. And on the other side is a ectus. would be extremely tall if not for the fact that they were sitting and they move their seat in a way that it reveals itself to be a wheelchair
Starting point is 00:12:17 turning around to the noise, they seem to be watering their legs. The water hitting two stumps at the end of where their legs should be but the individual notices you all stops watering their legs and says, oh, hello, guests, please,
Starting point is 00:12:35 come in. Johnny, you're fine, you're fine. What are your names? And he seems wholly interested in the four of you. I'm Keza, and he directs to Bebo. Bebo salutes with a selection of his hands. Bebo, nice to make your acquaintance. Tipping the hat again, Zen.
Starting point is 00:13:01 I'm referred to as Zen. Zenko steps forward and says, Zanko, Captain of the Godsinger. This is the crew of the God Singer. We saw that you have some jobs that you might need some help with. And this individual says, well, my name is Limo. I don't know if I need Leviathaniers. And Zanko says, oh, we're not Leviathaners.
Starting point is 00:13:30 That's just the name of our ship. Limo, of course, a natural mistake. It would be a good name for a Leviathanier ship, though. Well, anyway. Yeah, yeah, we get that a lot. No, we haul. We deliver. Hallers, hallers, yes.
Starting point is 00:13:47 Well, there's always room for haulers. I do have a job. I'm sure you said you saw it on the job board. It's a little intense, but he looks you all up and down. You seem like capable wild sailors. You understand the basics. There are pirates that have been harassing. the Mezariah, and we need someone to deal with them.
Starting point is 00:14:10 We met them on the way in. The pirates? First hand. Oh, you mean the air pirates. As far as I understand, they aren't working necessarily with the pirates I'm talking about, but maybe there's a connection I haven't thought about yet. You've got two flavors of pirates? Oh, well, of course.
Starting point is 00:14:28 There's regular pirates that travel along the vergency, and then there's air pirates. But air pirates typically tend to spend their time in the ragged. We don't see them very often. Them showing up here in Red Crown is a bit of a new occurrence. Oh, okay. Well, anyway, the tall and short of it, he adjusts himself in his wheelchair and kind of wheels himself over to you all individuals. Is that a couple of weeks ago, our flagship, the Happy Eater, one of the best trading vessels
Starting point is 00:15:02 we have was seemingly captured. It never made itself into port. We thought it was just destroyed, but then about a week after its disappearance, it reappeared. We know this because the ship that it captured was intelligent enough to send a pigeon courier to us. That pigeon explained in hastily written Lowsower that the crew, the original crew of the Happy Eater, were taking the ship aboard, the second ship being the little rascal. and that was the last we heard of them. Once we understood that it was pirates of some kind, maybe mutineers,
Starting point is 00:15:45 we decided to make some adjustments and stop sailing along the green stream, where the Happy Eater was originally taken. We decided to just sail through the Mesoraya. It's a little longer, but a little safer, a lot safer. Well, that was until the third ship was taken. When the third ship was taken, it became very difficult to convince merchants to go out onto the sea without some kind of mercenary help. And you understand, mercenaries are rather expensive.
Starting point is 00:16:18 So we've opted to instead just find a way to get rid of the pirates once and for all. So you believe you're being targeted by this captain? There's no doubt. Captain Oric was seen by the crew of the Little Rascal. he is still alive along with much of the crew. We suspect they had some kind of mutiny against us. We don't know why. We treat them very well. Right.
Starting point is 00:16:46 They hit you in three different spots, essentially, right? Three different ships, three different spots, one of them being far from the other. Do you have any idea where this captain's hiding out? Well, we suspect he's maybe spending his time on the other side of the green stream, which would be Ragged Wood. But at this point, attacking ships in the middle of the Mesirio, they could be anywhere. We suspect the snarl is a reef in between Splitspeer and Red Crown
Starting point is 00:17:14 that maybe they're hiding around there. Lots of crevices and places for those sneaky bastards to hide. Is this related to the Decoy Mission as well? Oh, we still have that up. Hmm, yes, we'll have to tell Johnny to take it down. That was the original plan. send out some kind of decoy with ships and get them to, uh, uh, get the pirates to be lured in by the decoy. But, uh, never really got off the ground.
Starting point is 00:17:43 By the time the third ship was taken, nobody was willing to go out. It's been that way for over a month now. So we can be sneaky. We don't have to pretend to be bait. Oh, you can do whatever you think is the best way of catching these pirates. Uh, we're not against you doing anything that, uh, as long as it's, guarantees clearing the Maseraya of these pariah. I didn't see whether it was claimed on the job board.
Starting point is 00:18:10 Do you have any teams out already? Well, he opens up a big dusty logbook and starts kind of piercing through it. And he says, well, there is one other team that has agreed to this job. The crew of the mass romantic. They're the only ones that are currently active. We've had a few other crews, a swearing that they could get the job done, but never hear from them. Mass Romantic, did they...
Starting point is 00:18:37 I don't want that to deter you, though. Of course. No, no determinants here. Did they put down a wager? They did. Let's see. They said that they could patrol the Mesiria without a compass. Is that something you think you could do? Oh, my God. Yeah, with our eyes closed, but going as fast as we do,
Starting point is 00:19:00 It's very, sorry. Do you mind if we have a quick little discussion? We're interested as far as I can gather. He looks between the other three. The wager we want to be specific about. Do you mind if I talk to my team? Oh, you want to put your own wager. Of course.
Starting point is 00:19:20 Please take your time and he wheels back to the other side of his desk. I'll just be watering my legs over here. Of course. Get that right knee. It looks dry. Oh, good catch. Listen. Compass, we've done it before.
Starting point is 00:19:37 We have a bad habit of running right into walls. We go too fast not to have a navigation system. It's true. We could take a lot of damage if we don't really know where we're going. I bet they did it on purpose. Zenko with his arms folded is his blank stare of a plank, kind of looking in one direction before turning to you and saying, the snarl
Starting point is 00:20:02 that's about four days sailing northeast of here I think I could probably do without a compass it would be risky though I had another idea and Zinn being the one that usually brings me down if I'm in the clouds tell me
Starting point is 00:20:20 that other piece of paper was exciting to me the decoy I'm wondering if that could be our wager if we could be our wager If we could wager that we could trick them into thinking we're a company ship and get them that way, if we could pull it off, it would be interesting. And I'm thinking maybe we get from a limo here the company file on the old captain.
Starting point is 00:20:46 If I know Slow Beard, he's not thinking about the human element of this. There's a personality that goes into someone who commits a mutiny. We've got to find out why this guy's so pissed. That was incredibly crowded. Oh, oh, sin. Oh, that actually, I feel like I have a heart somewhere. Oh, it's in your knee. You're inevitably going to do something chaotic.
Starting point is 00:21:10 I know this, because I know you. Gathering information beforehand would put things definitely in our favor. I think it'd be flashy enough that we could definitely shove it in their faces if we get it over on them. Something slowbeard's not thinking about. Yeah. Captain, what are you thinking? It's a good as plan as any. Now, the question is,
Starting point is 00:21:32 can we convince him to pay for the repairs and the adjustments to our ship that we want? I'm wondering if maybe we could leverage the chart itself if it seems like he's back on the plan. Maybe we could give him a partial stake in whatever we find. I don't love the idea of giving up treasures, but if we have to, Yeah, if we want to climb that amber, we're going to need his help, and it's a big bargain.
Starting point is 00:22:02 But I'm also thinking, we're the ones that decide what we find out there once we go. We can always come back and say we didn't find much. Zanko says, try the first method first. Just agree to the job. Let's see what he says. And Keza, your word is everything. You've never lied to me before. Never.
Starting point is 00:22:25 have I lied to you, Bebo. Well, have you made up your minds then? We have. We think we have a negotiation here, and we have a wager to put on top of it. Oh, exciting. He gets the book open. Yes, yes, I'm ready for you. So as representatives of the crew of the godsinger,
Starting point is 00:22:48 we would like to put forward that we accept your job. We wager on top of it. that the crew of the God Singer can convinceably act as decoy to the captain in securing his capture. And we are going to do so in exchange for a list of ship parts necessary for the God Singer to complete its next mission.
Starting point is 00:23:16 Excellent. All right. Yes. So you will be a decoy or you'll act as a decoy. I like this. You're combining both plans. I like that. And you said payment is you'd like changes to your ship. What sort of changes? Oh, nothing major. Currently, we do not possess the systems in order to climb Amber. So if you could just put forward anything that would assist us in maybe a full trust system with associated hooks and prowls.
Starting point is 00:23:51 Amber. You're trying to go to shortfall. Yes, we are trying to go to Shartfall, and we need the necessary components. That can be done. It's a little difficult because what you need is a peaton system to make sure you get a good hold of the amber. But there are ships that can do that. Unfortunately, no one here has the accoutrement, but a good shipwright in Splitspeer owes me a favor. Have you ever heard of the shipwright at Zaki? No. He looks to Zanko. his usual movements of like,
Starting point is 00:24:29 you know everybody, do you know him? Zanko kind of turns his, his plank of a face to you and says, that's only the shipwright that created the cock of the walk, four-time regatta champion, probably the most famous shipwright in all of Rivenwick. You're kidding. And they owe you a favor?
Starting point is 00:24:47 Oh, yes. Me and Nizaki go way back, Limo says, kind of bouncing in his chair, and he says, we won't be able to make those repairs here in Red Crown. But if you complete the job, I'll know it's complete because that Zaki will send me the bill. You simply mention my name to him. Tell him that he owes me a favor, and you can consider it done.
Starting point is 00:25:11 Okay. That is, of course, if you complete the mission. After all, there is another crew trying to do the job as well. Right, yeah, slow beard. I mean, yes, we're aware of them. Well, I'll be sure to have one of my... my lackeys inform them that there's a new wager on the board. Good.
Starting point is 00:25:32 Oh, we do need some information, though. From you, would you be willing to share a little bit more about the captain? The Captain Oric. Yes. Yeah. Personnel files, personal history. I'm happy to share some things with you, and he starts kind of rifling through his pages again. What I have is here is the ship.
Starting point is 00:25:57 ships manifest before it left a month and a half ago. As for Captain Oric, he was a rather surly individual, ripe for being a captain. He wasn't known as a particularly friendly person to his crew, but he always got the job done, and so the Timberflow mercantile trusted him on their biggest, most powerful ship, the Happy Eater. Kesa is looking over this manifest as Limo is talking about this. He's trying to discern if any of this, these things in the cargo listing strike him as strange or something he doesn't familiarize with
Starting point is 00:26:37 or anything that might have had. It made this a more special trip than he had intended. Everything in the manifest seems like standard cargo. Limo speaks up and says, there is one other thing. There was a report last week of a orchard. out in the Mesoraya that seemed to have survived an interaction with the pirates.
Starting point is 00:27:02 Everyone still seems alive, and they reported speaking with a member of the third ship. Screwloose is the name of the third ship. Perhaps you could speak to these orchard owners, and maybe they know something. That's perfect. Okay. That's a good lead for us.
Starting point is 00:27:24 You find them on the way to the snarl. on the way to the snarl. Oh, perfect. Perfect. We were wondering as well, could we, in our partnership together, see about
Starting point is 00:27:37 borrowing some of your company's colors, anything that your ships typically fly with so that we could affix to the godsinger to make it seem as though we're working on contract. Well, naturally, if you'd like to paint your ship blue, those are the colors of the timber flow mercantile. Additionally, when we had the plan of the decoy ship, we did have a small sloop that you could drag along
Starting point is 00:28:02 if you wanted to use it for some reason. Yes, yes, we want to drag the ship and paint our ship blue. This is the best day ever! I'm glad you're all so excited about this. It's been a real thorn in our size for the last month and a half, so glad to see you're happy for it. You mentioned, too, that the pigeon system sent word when that first mutiny happened, yes?
Starting point is 00:28:24 Yes. You don't happen to have that same pigeon system in service, or at least retired, maybe? Well, the pigeon that you're talking about is out on service, but we do have a pigeon service if you'd like to take some with you. We'll take a set as well. We're wondering if maybe we can use that system to send communication that maybe the captain will somehow intercept. He wheels himself over to an old wooden cabinet, opens it up. and sure enough, a bunch of birds are kind of flapping around inside. He stuffs two or three into a cage, an old rusted cage and hands it to you.
Starting point is 00:29:04 Perfect. I'm going to immediately give it to Bebo because I just know that that's the natural course. It's going to end up there anyways. Bebo's shoulder, flesh, just kind of parts and makes a little nest-like area to plop the cage, Sean. Zinn, do you think I'm missing anything, Biba? There's perhaps more to this than we know, but that is for another day because that is not the jump. Limo shrugs his shoulders and says
Starting point is 00:29:37 there's a lot of crazy stuff out there on the wild. See, we've had our fair share of captains just go cuckoo and we have to reel them back in. But Captain Orrick, as mean as he was, he was solid, dependable. It's quite unusual. He sailed the Green Stream many times. Is there anywhere in port where he would stay when he was between jobs? He was often found at the Salt and Soot, a local smokehouse.
Starting point is 00:30:05 He loved his fair share of a pinwolf meat at the final cut, which is a chop house. You could maybe get some individuals to retell stories of him. Okay. I feel ready, gang. I do as well. I'm excited about the blue paint. Where do we find it? Johnny will have some out in the front.
Starting point is 00:30:31 Oh, wow. Okay. This is still the best day ever. Well, enjoy the Sacred Ground Festival. Like I said, I'll be here if you need anything. Do you want me to bring you some fruit? Oh, actually, if you could, that'd be wonderful. I've been in the mood for some worm apples.
Starting point is 00:30:49 Oh, okay. I'll keep an eye out. I haven't tried those yet. So you eat the fruit, too? Well, of course. It's one of our traditions here. Kaza, do not start. Just doing some investigative work.
Starting point is 00:31:03 Let us go question others. Thank you for your time and your patronage. Be safe out there. On the way out in the hallway, Bebo will again run his mushroom fingers along the walls, just like saying goodbye to all of the trinkets. And he'll look up at Keza and Zinn and say, I've decided that I want to say,
Starting point is 00:31:22 stay on a ship forever. I don't want a hallway like this. I want to keep having fun with you guys. I think that's fantastic, Biba. And I think if that's what you want, that's what you're going to have. With all sorts of us guys, it doesn't have to just be me and then,
Starting point is 00:31:42 as in, and it could be all sorts of other people, you know? Bibo stopped listening. At the part he wanted to hear, he takes off skipping down the hallway. Forever and never, never, never. He says as he hits his hands along the walls, just skipping his way out.
Starting point is 00:31:59 I think Keza reaches over and gently pats Zinn's chest in a way that doesn't get him shot with a revolver. You understand that that's your business when we leave port. Yes, you, whatever this is, does not include me. I am not in the business of forever, and I think we've agreed this. When it is my responsibility, I will make sure that he has the medication he so sorely needs. Oh, thank God. Okay, yeah, medicate him. Sedate him.
Starting point is 00:32:30 Whatever you need. As long as the boy's happy and forgets me when this is all over, it'll be fine. I'm pretty sure he will forget the next two minutes till the next two minutes. My problem is he keeps remembering. Johnny the bald, ardent Waits for you all by the front door Holding a pail of blue paint And a thick brush stuck inside of it And he holds it out
Starting point is 00:32:57 Zinn will take it How hard is it to get this off? It's paint Okay, well thank you Johnny It's really helpful He grabs your hand as you reach out towards the paint And he says Those Firefly bulbs
Starting point is 00:33:13 That's for free Don't let that little gal steal another thing, okay? Bebo has already exited, not part of this conversation. He's outside investigating where he can find the worm apples, and you can hear him yelling, where's the fruit? Fruit!
Starting point is 00:33:31 He has a sickness, and we promise it will not happen again. Until it does. Good luck out there with the pirates, and he, let's go. I didn't raise my hand up, but just fully like the pistol was pointed directly. at his stomach that entire time and as soon as he lets go I make a show of putting my weapon back into its holster and then I walk away like I didn't wasn't about to fully murder this guy
Starting point is 00:34:00 you were gonna take out that guy's kidneys he touched me I don't know him he does not have permission let's go paint the ship tra la la la la la la la la I do it in the way that bebo does Kesa just holding the paint bucket and the brush, ready to go. Bebo, the festival still in full swing. Something catches your eye. Off to the left, there appears to be the smoldering remains of an airship that perhaps crashed into the side of the mountain. There is a woman, an ardent woman with two children,
Starting point is 00:34:40 speaking to a guard, that same guard with the ram's head skull for a mask. And at the feet is a ardent man severely burned on one side. And you can overhear her conversation explaining that he saved them from the crash. And as they, as she is explaining it, a strangely dressed, a deep red robe dressed man along with two other guards, emerges, them holding a cot. And the individual in the red robe almost seems to say a prayer over the person. Before the two guards grab him and put him onto the cot and lift him up.
Starting point is 00:35:23 And as he's lifted, the man who's badly burned on one side begins to call out, Yes, I have been atoned. This is my atonement. And all of the red crown individuals standing and milling about begin to clap politely in kind of congratulations. And the group begins leading him in his cot towards a very obvious cave mouth, not more than 100 feet away. And then everyone kind of goes back to what they were doing, enjoying the festival. Let's take a break to thank some people.

And now, back to the show.
Starting point is 00:41:14 Vivo takes this in with interest, and he waits for his companions outside the front door of the shipyard, making note of the cave in particular. Well, we have got to get this ship painted. We've got to fly some colors. I think we need to send a message with some information, maybe a fake manifest of what we're taking out there, that we were contracted by the ship.
Starting point is 00:41:42 company. Bebo, you with us? Oh, hello, I'm here. I'm down here. He says as he's on his all-forous form, kind of like, almost like melted into the floor. I was just keeping a low profile because some really weird things just happened out here
Starting point is 00:42:02 while you guys were inside. What happened out of here? Oh, an atonement? I don't know what it was, but some of the same. Someone went into the cave on a stretcher, and they all seemed very happy about it. The same woman and her two children are now walking past you. It's them!
Starting point is 00:42:26 Bibo kind of slithers up to standing, making a slurping noise as all of the mushroom parts reassemble, and just puffs of spores are emitting everywhere. Excuse me! Can you explain to my friends what just happened? They didn't see, and I'm a notoriously unreliable. reliable narrator. The woman looks at the four of you kind of confused, and one of the children tugs at her shirt and says,
Starting point is 00:42:52 they're wild sailors, and they kind of look in awe at you. And the mother takes that in and says, oh, well, that was simply atonement. The man saved our life. That pirate airship nearly crushed us, but he pushed us out of the way. Unfortunately, he was badly burned in the accident,
Starting point is 00:43:09 but they'll make up for it. They'll atone for it. The Red Crown leaders, always do. So he'll be rewarded for his help? In whatever way they can, he seemed pretty badly hurt in his arms and legs. They'll probably replace those, and maybe they'll even give him a home and inside Red Crown, although that's usually left for the most heroic.
Starting point is 00:43:33 Is there anything else I can help you with? Do you know where to get worm apples? There should be a stall just down this way, lots of fruits to pick from. to pick from. We can show you if you like. It'd be great, he says standing up to full height. Once again, I just kind of lean towards Keza and I whisper.
Starting point is 00:43:53 I really do not like it here. I know. I know. I know it sounds all humanitarian, but I know that this is fucked. There's no way this isn't fucked. This is a cult. This is definitely a cult. Exactly, right?
Starting point is 00:44:08 And they're eating a fucking fruit. That's why they're okay with this shit. It's not the fruit. It is. It's not the fruit. As this conversation's happening, Bebo skips ahead with the folks that he was interacting with and kind of like doing the thing where he's measuring his height against the child's height casually as they're walking.
Starting point is 00:44:28 I think I might be taller than you. With any luck in a couple years, I'll be taller than you. Oh, I guess I am done growing. They'd lead you over to a fruit stand where, sure enough, there are some worm apples, these cylindrical shaped fruits that seem to be made of individual, well, worms. Amazing. Bibo takes as many as he can carry, which more appendages just kind of like splurt out of him.
Starting point is 00:45:00 They're not fully formed because he doesn't usually have that many, but he just needs more to carry these apples. So just like, kind of just like shelves of flesh appear on different parts of his body and he places the apples on them to like carefully. hold them. And he gives some to the child and the mother as well. Would you mind giving some of these to this man in the ship area? He's at the end of a hallway full of very precious treasures. I don't recommend taking any. He wants an apple. A man in a ship area. His name is Limo. Oh, Limo of the Timberflow mercantile. Sure, sure. We could do that. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:45:42 Thank you so much. Yeah, I don't know if I want to go back in there because it's a very tempting area for me. May the court protect you, and she bows politely to you. Yeah, court. Thanks. Have a good day. They smile and kind of scuttle off the direction of the mercantile.
Starting point is 00:46:01 What the fuck is with these people, man? Oh, my God. The court protect you? Oh, God. Are we continuing the... Listen now. Yeah, we got a ship to paint blue. We got to send some messages.
Starting point is 00:46:17 We're going to come up with a good decoy. We got to talk to some people who knew this guy. Beville, did you want to be the one that painted the ship, or were you just happy about a new color? I would love to paint the ship. In all the ships I've been on, I've never painted one. And it's going straight back. We worked really hard to find that shade of gray,
Starting point is 00:46:38 and it's going to go straight back. That's fine. That means I get to paint it again. We're just a very happy individual, aren't you, Bibo? I just hand over the paint. He exchanges the paint for the apples that he's carrying, kind of offloads the extras to Zinn in particular. Here, you can hang on to these in case we get hungry out there.
Starting point is 00:47:00 Yes, we get hungry. Zanko standing amongst all of you has his back turned to you all, staring out at the cave watching individuals go in and out and he turns and he says you know that that Buckley the dockmaster he did recommend that we get our atonement
Starting point is 00:47:21 might be able to get some supplies or maybe something special for the ship might be worth a try never worth saying no to a free thing I am in the business of preparations and perhaps I will get something for this worm apple oh they're moving
Starting point is 00:47:38 I put it back where we got it from. Yeah, you don't want those inside your gears. Well, it's just this way. I saw where they took the man to the cave. The group migrates over to the entrance of the cave. You can feel immediately the cool air
Starting point is 00:47:57 rushing out as you make your way in. The two guards in their faceless skull masks kind of watch you as you pass and enter. Immediately you realize why a 70-year war was fought over this mountain. Inside is a network of caves lit by chemical light and flare caps lighting the ceiling. Inside, you can hear the faint echo of chanting or music going on. Everyone in here seems to be dressed more formally.
Starting point is 00:48:38 There is an air of holiness in this place, and you are led along with other individuals from outside to a great hall held up by stalagmite spires that curl up into the ceiling and hold it in place. Here, there is a great gathering of individuals and at the far end are six individuals standing on a kind of stone platform. The room in here is warm. Against the wall behind these individuals are pre-verdent relics.
Starting point is 00:49:19 Some of them look like weapons, some look like devices of some kind. In front of these six individuals is a kind of pyramid-like obelisk, gold in its design, something you have never seen before. Gems fastened along the four edges of the triangle, glowing, the device itself humming in some kind of odd way that seems to fill the space. And as you approach, waiting in line, you can see that there are individuals that walk up to these six individuals, kind of bow respectfully, have some kind of conversation with these individuals, and then leave. I guess that's what the court, the tribunal, whatever the fuck they call it in here.
Starting point is 00:50:07 I believe we are meant to bow. And it's like Keza has never bowed before as they, you know, come forward to their turn, and they like flounce their arms out and then sort of fall at a diagonal. And the plasmid nature of their body rotates some so that the Grecian-like statue, shows for a moment that the marble comes out and then goops back together into his usual mantral tentacles. Now closer to the obelisk, it being just in front of you and the court being behind it, you can feel heat emanating from this device. It's buzzing. Maybe perhaps what's even more striking is the court itself, dressed in these deep red robes. Ardent, all of them, but
Starting point is 00:51:01 twisted, mutated. Their bodies hidden underneath these robes, some of them with humps, all of them wearing masks that hide, bloated, strange faces. One individual stands kind of apart from the rest and speaks in a kind of snake-like voice. Speak your atonement to the court. and he gestures.
Starting point is 00:51:32 We were waylaid and attacked by pirates entering your community. And as such, did you defend Red Crown? Yes. Have you lost any limbs? Bibo's arm falls off. Yes. He looks to the others. the one on the far end whispers to the other,
Starting point is 00:52:08 another whispers down the telephone line until they return to him. You will receive your penance. What feels appropriate to you? Just a refill of all of our supplies. We were running on the bare minimum. Anyway, now you would have access to us. When you said supplies,
Starting point is 00:52:34 then it reminded me that we could actually get some shiny stuff To bring with us on the ship. That's a great idea. Like they had a lot of shiny stuff. Maybe we could ask for the same manifest. I bow myself before your humble forms. We have a specific request to replenish the goods lost. A manifest of the goods lost.
Starting point is 00:53:06 And I'm just going to list out the things that we're on. on that first trip for the hungry eater. That's quite a cargo. We believe we can replace some of these things. Will that satisfy you? Yes. He puts out a long hand with these long nails, pimples and boils growing on it.
Starting point is 00:53:32 Shake on it. You could just hear the slow wearing of my neck as I turn towards Keza. Oh, okay, okay, okay, okay, shake on it, shake on it, shake on it. And I finally put it out with Zin's pressure. Atonement has been reached and he pulls his hand back. The guards at either set end, kind of gesture for you to leave. We'll follow through to the escort and see how it goes about getting her.
Starting point is 00:54:11 our loot. The escort, a red-robed individual, this one only with a few pock marks on his face, but clearly something wrong with him as well, says, yes, we believe we can give you some of these things, certainly some cracked chrome windplates and some gilded hull rivets, so would you be okay with that? Yeah, yeah. Could you really throw in that pearl egg, too, if you have one? That'd be incredible. are you? Yes, the brain pearl. Yeah, excuse me. Can't read.
Starting point is 00:54:45 The, uh, the assistant kind of looks awkward. Brain pearls are restricted here at Red Crown, so we won't be able to supply that. Oh. Oh. That's a shame. I was told with atonement that could give anything. Take it easy now, because, uh, the man laughs awkwardly, assuming it's a joke and says, well, we try to do our best, uh, with it. Red Crown rules, of course.
Starting point is 00:55:11 Anything that alters the mind is generally not seen as holy. Bebo lets out a spore fart of nervousness, just his whole body just omits all of these hallucinogenic spores. Yeah, we didn't know when we were transporting. How exactly does the brain pearl alter the mind, you said? Well, a brain pearl, as far as I understand it, I've never had one my own. It has memories stored in it. scavers and un-surly folk from Rem Reef use a special kind of thing over there that captures memories and dreams and, well, others consume them.
Starting point is 00:55:53 I wouldn't know, though. And as he's talking, these hallucinogenic spores, kind of start to cover his face and his eyes kind of go wide and his irises begin to dilate. Uh-huh. Oh no, he's got a bad trip, a bad trip. Yes, I think I'll get you your supplies as quickly as possible. Perfect. Thank you. Thank you, Bibo says, a little nervously picking up his arm from the floor and waving.
Starting point is 00:56:26 He looks at that and looks at his own hand and begins kind of waving it in front of his face. Wow. Listen, we didn't get everything on that list, but did you hear him? I mean, there's a good chance that captain took the brain pearl, right? Very much. It was the one thing that stood out to me on the manifest, but again, as I said before, it does not really affect the mission, but now we may know why he acts the way he acts. But we have a hinge for our wage. We know the humanity of it. What Slow Beard doesn't know. He's not himself. Walking out of this cavern, of this big room where you found the court,
Starting point is 00:57:13 immediately the cold air of the cave returns to you. What do you think this all is? This thing in the middle. A obelisk. Maybe it generates things. Anything you want. It could make your wildest dreams come true. It just makes you a little pussy afterwards.
Starting point is 00:57:34 As Zanko walks with you, he mutters to himself. You know, I've heard rumors that somebody managed to get into drowning Ma not too long ago. Red Crown crew, no less. Wonder. Do you think this came from the Ma? Could be. They say there's all kinds of preverting treasures at the mall. I've never seen that thing before, and I've been to Red Crown a couple of times.
Starting point is 00:57:59 Oh, so it wasn't part of the war then. I mean, to get into the Ma, that's insane. I mean, I tried it once and it's impossible. The storm, you can't even imagine how big it is. Way bigger than the cloud. Do you think this thing could bring that cloud around? Reaching out into from one machine to another, I am sensing any type of, if there's a type of consciousness,
Starting point is 00:58:25 or if this is simply a machine designed to do one thing, such as creating material. It doesn't communicate back. It isn't intelligent. But it clearly has a purpose, creating some kind of generational field. In fact, that's when you notice there's radioactivity emitting from this thing. And it doesn't appear to be completely functional. There's something that it's not doing in total.
Starting point is 00:58:54 It's on. It's working. But it's not doing exactly what its job is. They don't understand it. This could possibly claim the skin. There is a slight amount of radioactivity emanating from the obelisk. And while they have it working, I believe there is a malfunction. It is not working correctly.
Starting point is 00:59:19 Zengo's shoulders kind of shudder. He says, well, whatever it is, it's given me the hebi-jeebies. Perhaps we continue on our way. So, where are we going now? Are we questioning farmers? Are we painting ships? Here's the thing. I don't think we need to talk to anybody who knew the captain before.
Starting point is 00:59:39 Because if this brain pearl really took him over, it's not having anything to do with who he was when he left. It has to do with who he became on the first trip. Do you think he was just tempted by it then? I think he might have been beboed, yeah. I think maybe they went on a big journey and halfway through, he maybe had too much to drink, got down in the cargo hold,
Starting point is 01:00:05 and fire-fied his way into a whole new existence. So maybe that's the real thing we need to put on our ship. They are illegal here, so we won't be able to procure one in a legal matter. If you all think it's worth it and something that he'd be drawn to, another brain pearl, then maybe we could go buy some drugs. Before we do that, do you think it's worth checking with someone who knew him to see if he would even ever do it in the beginning? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:00:39 Yeah, I, yeah, we can. Absolutely. Some people just can't eat, for example. He says pointing it's in. I believe we can figure this out after we prepare for our journey. And we do have competition. We'll go. We'll paint the ship.
Starting point is 01:00:57 Unload the manifest, get the cargo bay ready, get the sloop tight in, and then before we leave, we'll buy some drugs. Like I said, best day ever! Little spores shoot off in celebration. The team, the crew, steps out from the caverns of Red Crown to come upon the middle of a relay race. Individuals racing past you all, handing off batons for another group to then be. continue the relay race down the other side of this district that you're in. You return to the ship, the sun is beginning to set as you begin the job of painting the ship. It's going to take a little while, and as you go through the process, the familiar face of
Starting point is 01:01:45 Slowbeard and his crew come sauntering up the deck. And he says, so looks like somebody decided to butt in to our glory. Hey, watch where you're stepping. I'm painting here. Oh, he lifts a foot trying not to step into a bucket. Thank you. Bibo says he's, he's like rigged on this apparatus, so he's like on the side of the ship,
Starting point is 01:02:07 just painting the slab of wood that he's nearest, and he's yelling up onto the deck where he's at. You guys think you can stop some pirates in this thing? Yes, absolutely. It was made for it. And make our job even harder with a new wager, huh? Well, we have outwriters of ourselves. Oh, that's good. That's good. Well, when you eventually arrive about a week late because you're flying without a compass
Starting point is 01:02:31 and half the navigator you think you are, well, you'll find us with our decoy dinghy and the captain in tow. And maybe then, and he looks to the Ketra at a slow beard side, maybe then we'll know who wins. Slow beard steps closer and you realize that he doesn't have a beard at all. there's a sloth hanging from one ear over to the other over his face and it kind of slowly unfurls and opens its eyes at you blinks once and then kind of goes back to sleep and Slowbeard says yeah well you can search the mesari all you want
Starting point is 01:03:14 but I know where it's going to be I know where those pirates are going to be you're hold on you're saying you know where they are Hmm, I have a pretty good guess. I mean, they attacked by the green stream, and then they attacked in the center of the mesariah by the snarl. He looks at his teammates, we suspect they're going to be somewhere on the timber flow, so we're just going to follow the timber flow and hunt that area.
Starting point is 01:03:39 We also know a bad bet. It's a safe one. You're not going to make any money, honey. It's the same one you make on every job you take. We'll do it without a compass, and we'll plan the route for about two days before we, we leave and then hope we're right when we get there. But it pays out less. It always does. You have to take a bigger gamble if you're ever going to win. A bigger gamble, uh? Well, a bigger
Starting point is 01:04:04 gamble didn't get us this nice ship. Uh, we don't like to take big gambles. We take the safe gamble because it guarantees success. Right guys? And the, you know, the crew behind him. Yeah, that's right. Wasn't your ship provided for you? Well, that's Yes, after a lot of hard work and dedication, yes. It's pretty safe. We earned this ship piece by piece. And through a little chaos,
Starting point is 01:04:32 Bebo adds kind of again hanging off the side of the ship and like swinging back and forth on the rigging that he's harnessed into to paint. And that is worth something too. The Ketra on Slow Beard side. I do like Ketra. Chaos. Slow beard kind of hits him. All right, enough, enough already. All right, well, we'll hope not to see you, and we'll see you back in port when we catch them first.
Starting point is 01:04:59 Sure. When we catch them first, we'll buy you guys around. Yeah, we'll see it. We'll believe it when we see it. You'll probably be seeing it sooner than you think. Our ship's so fast, we're going to lap you twice. There you go, Bipo. Slow beard spits on the ground. and says, all right, team, let's roll out. And he turns around and starts making his way off the dog. Oh, Captain, make sure you get that compass ready.
Starting point is 01:05:29 We won't need it. The team disappears. Do you think they believe that wearing matching uniforms makes them look cool? I mean, it kind of is. I could paint this all blue. Just stand stills in. This outfit was carefully procured. Do not interrupt the drip.
Starting point is 01:05:47 Bebo puts down the paintbrush and goes back to painting the side of the ship. Never give up your individuality, Bebo. It's all we got. If you look like just about anybody else, you wouldn't be Bebo. I guess that's true. Although I am an accumulation of a million identical spores
Starting point is 01:06:06 all part of the same ecosystem. Individuality, Bebo. It can happen a million times. A million times, Bebo repeat. and all the spores just go up off the side of the ship, and you just see this little spore cloud, just this small cloud just puffing up over the side as he hums while he paints.
Starting point is 01:06:29 The sun sets a nice warm tone, splashing itself over the multitude of canopy all around Red Crown. And the festivities begin to die down. You see individuals taking down banners and little lights begin to pop up in all the different buildings. and hobbles around.
Starting point is 01:06:52 And night comes. The painting of the ship is done. The supplies are brought to your ship, trying their best to match what it was that was on the cargo manifest. Not exactly, but close enough. Zanko steps out, well, are we staying the night or are we leaving first thing in morning?
Starting point is 01:07:15 I say we set four at dawn, try and get ahead out. Faster is speed. We're going to be faster than them anyways. If we can outrun them, all the better. Well, I'm going to get a smoke at the salt and soot if any of you want to join me. Otherwise, you're free to do what you like. I think maybe that could be a good place to find a drug dealer.
Starting point is 01:07:38 And the captain's old friends. Who are, coincidentally, probably drug dealers. I'm interested to see what kinds of friends the captain has. I've known many captains in my day. Some of them are nice, some of them are mean, and some of them aren't what you think they'll be. I wonder if our captain isn't as mean as they say he was. Well, how about off to the Salton Soot?
Starting point is 01:08:03 Here we go. You head your way back into port, back into the heart of Midway, and you begin to notice paper lanterns rising and floating into the air. It seems as if everyone in town, lit their own lantern and the sky is full of them as they drift off into the sky, the night sky. You find yourself in front of the salt and soot, a large, preverdent concrete structure of some kind,
Starting point is 01:08:33 now mangled and changed into just this massive square building with light and smoke emitting from it. It's rowdy inside. You can hear laughter and music playing. So are we going to ask random individuals about? the captain, or are we going to look for anyone that may be dressed as shipfaring folk? I think maybe we could split our efforts. One of us goes for the drugs, and the others go for the captain, and whoever the third wants to split the others, then by all means. Drugs, please!
Starting point is 01:09:13 Okay. Zinn, do you want to hunt down the captain then? I will look for the captain. Yes. And Captain Zanko? Drugs, Captain. I'm just going to grab first hookah I can find. Yeah. Again, every opportunity you have to sit down, you take.
Starting point is 01:09:32 I work hard. I'm your captain. Oh, you work so hard. Zanko. So hard. If you find somebody interesting, I'd be happy to sit alongside and play the part. Okay. Well, I'll let you know.
Starting point is 01:09:47 And I think Kesa starts strolling. off towards the bartender. The door swing open and inside is a well-lit room at the center of it, and the hearth is an actual fire, something you have very rarely seen. Your eyes immediately drawn to the lure of the flames in the middle of the room. One of the few places that you can actually light a fire without concern of it catching in the wild sea. There are individuals sitting kind of in a circular pattern.
Starting point is 01:10:18 some of them smoking, some of them drinking. There's a bar off to the side and a bunch of little alcoes for individuals to have a little bit of privacy. As I scan the room, do I feel like any individual is giving us undue attention? For the most part, everyone's ignoring you. There are the occasional faces that kind of come out of a shadow to look you up and down and then return to the shadows.
Starting point is 01:10:47 I think, uh, Keza reaches down and picks up Bebo with their permission and sort of heaves them over the fire. Like above Keza, but closest to the fire and goes, this is real flame, Bebo. Do you know how rare this is? Bebo kicks their feet delightedly, even though parts of the bottoms of their feet starts to have that like roasted mushroom smell of like a really nice sauteed mushroom. and just like basks in it. I can feel it. It's real.
Starting point is 01:11:22 You know, the first hackers, this is what they used. Before they realized the saws were the only thing that worked, fire was the first thing we went for against the vergency. It was a fucking nightmare. Everybody died. A barrel-chested ardent with the silhouette of red crown kind of tattooed across his chest, missing both arms replaced with mechanical ones.
Starting point is 01:11:46 Says, you're going to share that roasted mushroom or you're just going to roast it for yourself? Hey, it's my friend you're talking about. And I positioned Bebo in front of him so that the many stalks of eyes are towards the gentleman. Bebo looks at the newcomer, but it takes just a beat when Keza says friend. And all of the little tendrils kind of like perk up, like a dog whose ears go,
Starting point is 01:12:18 and so all of his mushrooms are like at attention as he faces him. Oh, hello. Hey there. How you doing? Good. Do you like drugs? Well, I like my fair share of bottom leaf. Sure.
Starting point is 01:12:39 Smoking some now. You want some? Sure. Bebo says immediately. We'd love to join. Do you have seats for us? He gestures towards some pillows nearby. Yeah, I'm going to set people down and sit down and, you know, join the smoke circle.
Starting point is 01:12:54 He kind of lean towards you guys. You two wild sailors? Oh, yeah. I look to Zinn and I give him a big thumbs up. Like, we're good over here, buddy. Hope you're doing well. Zen has just been going to individuals saying, Hello, do you know anything about the captain of the Happy Eater?
Starting point is 01:13:14 Hello, do you know anything about the captain of the Happy Eater? There's one or two folks that just kind of look at you inquisitively, but eventually there is a gow sitting in the corner who says, yeah, I know Captain Oric, what about him? Given what information you know about him, would you say that he is the type to do the actions that led to piracy? Piracy? I can't imagine Captain Orrick becoming a pirate.
Starting point is 01:13:46 He loves scalping pirates. So, out of the ordinary. Very good. I'm sure glad I'm not part of his ship, that's for sure. Was he close particularly to anyone? I've heard that he was quite intense as an individual. Intense is the right word. Yeah, intense is the right word for sure.
Starting point is 01:14:07 Close. I don't know if Captain Oric had anyone close to. him, but he did have a second mate who eventually left his service. He's over there, and he gestures towards an individual in the corner. Ah, thank you. This has been very helpful. Enjoy the rest of your evening. Bebo, because this individual has been talking to you for a minute and picks up what you are and what you're about.
Starting point is 01:14:35 And he says, you mention drugs. You want something a little harder than Bob. bottom leaf? Yeah. Yeah. What do you got on offer? I got a couple options. I got some long tobacco.
Starting point is 01:14:52 I got some tarmouth bush. I gave up tarmouth. Well, then what is it you need? You know, I've been trying to stay off the hard stuff, anything that goes, you know, in the body. And he gestures to his big amorphous oozing body. But you know what really works for both of us? I mean, it really gets us on a tear
Starting point is 01:15:14 and I like swoop around Bivo and act like we're having wild drug parties every night. We're really into like the psychic stuff. We want to go on a trip, man. How about you? An experience, huh?
Starting point is 01:15:29 Oh, an experience. The experience is what we're after. Kind of looks around. He's like, well, you know, I got a buddy of mine. He's over there in that corner. Kachio Berra, the shark folk.
Starting point is 01:15:44 He can get a hold of some brain pearls if you're into it. Oh, shit. They do brain pearls over here? Wow, what are the odds? Would you like me to make an introduction? Yeah, yeah. We're on vacation. You know, we're not going out to port for a while.
Starting point is 01:16:04 What do you think, Bivo? Should we? I don't know. Should we be bad? Oh, I'm being normal today, but I can be the normal amount of bad. Good. Then yes.
Starting point is 01:16:18 Let's do it. Follow me. He gets up out of his seat and begins walking over. Zinn, you make your way over to a separate corner. And there is a mothran with a big, colorful bandanas tied around the top of his head. His antenna kind of pushed back. He has this kind of darker blue. fur to him.
Starting point is 01:16:43 He kind of looks you up and down. What do you want? Hello. I heard that you were once the second in command of the Happy Eater. I am looking for information on the former captain,
Starting point is 01:16:54 or rather, the current captain. The four, cat, yeah, well, if you're talking about Captain Oric, yeah, I know Captain Oric
Starting point is 01:17:02 was happy to quit his services. What brought about your leaving his services? He's cruel. mean, Trees' crew like dirt. Better than dirt, I suppose, since that actually has value. He and I disagreed a lot on how to run the ship, and, well, I just had enough of his antics, so I left a while ago.
Starting point is 01:17:29 I'm sure whoever he's with now is a lot more compliant. Why do you ask? It has to do with some work that I am undergoing. Having more information about the captain will, sure. help us in our efforts. I don't know really what I can add, other than to avoid him if you can. He notices a revolver, and he says,
Starting point is 01:17:50 if you see him, make sure to put two in him for me. I don't need two. One will suffice. He won't have a head afterwards, though. I get it. Yes, I will shoot him in the head. Yeah, I said I get it. I was also joking.
Starting point is 01:18:06 Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. Yeah, yeah. Suppose you don't want to sit down and enjoy a hookah with me. I can sit down next to you, but I, unfortunately, am not able to enjoy it. Little conversation's always welcome. So, what do you do for fun around here? As you strike up the conversation across the way, Bebo and Keza, you approach a kind of dim section of the smokehouse, and there waiting for you is a red-skin Cachua bearer, a shark-person.
Starting point is 01:18:43 person. Their gleaming teeth shining in the dark. And he says, Carter, what do you bring in these people here for?
Starting point is 01:18:53 Carter says, oh, these are my new friends and they're looking for a good time. I told them that you could bring one. You could supply them with a good time. And he kind of looks you up and down
Starting point is 01:19:03 and says, what kind of a good time you're looking for? Oh, we're looking for the experience. We heard about brain furrows. I didn't even know that they carried them around here. I haven't done the trip in a long time, so.
Starting point is 01:19:18 They're hard to find around here. They keep a tight lock in Red Crown, but I can get them for you. How many do you need? Before you answer that, Kaza, I just want to say that the rules of the Wild Sea indicate that if you're a Red Crown enforcer, you have to tell us.
Starting point is 01:19:40 So are you? He looks at you with these kind of black doll's eyes and I'm not an enforcer. All right. We're in the clear. Thanks, Bivo. He spurts off a few celebratory spores. So now that we all know that no one in here is working for the Red Crown, we can proceed with the purchase. Yes. How many do you need?
Starting point is 01:20:12 Just one, but we're looking for whatever you think your most valuable memory is. I think I got something in mind. He stands up and he says, give me a couple minutes, meet me outside. Yeah, sure, sure. We'll talk out there. Exactly. And so he leaves the smokehouse. Bibo jumps up and down excitedly.
Starting point is 01:20:37 Oh, it's working. It's working. Okay, Bibo, we got to meet him outside. We got to be really cool. I'm a little worried he didn't want to talk. payment yet. He just agreed to sell, but I think we're in good. I'm still, I hope that Captain is the type that would be interested in this. I mean, he could just be having a mango, right? Yeah. We gotta hope Zinn's got the other side of this covered. He looks over and like kind of f shed over in Zinn in the corner.
Starting point is 01:21:08 So it's actually a gun metal gray underneath. The clothing is something I picked out myself. You must be one of those Koren that are security guards, good at killing things. Perhaps that is what I was. I have terrible memory issues. I was discovered, frozen in amber. You smoke enough of this stuff and you have memory issues, that's for sure. Ha, ha, ha, ha. So, Bebo, what do you think?
Starting point is 01:21:40 We go outside, we purchase, and then we come back in for Zen. Or should we take Zinn with us in case things get hairy? Well, usually when Zinn is in trouble socially, he'll begin frantically waving his arms. If he needs help, I assume he would let us know. Yeah, let's go buy the drugs. All right, little buddy. This way. And Bibo will give a solidarity wave over to Zinn, like, with only a couple of his appendages. Not frantic. He's okay.
Starting point is 01:22:13 I'm proud of him. I've never seen him say so many things to a stranger without putting two bullets of him. Bebel kind of runs through their crowd, weaves through everyone just from the heat of the fire and kind of he smells his own mushroom smell in a different way after the light roasting he got on his feet. He just has this energy of this place. And so he's just kind of like walking by people, giving high fives,
Starting point is 01:22:37 like tracing people's coat pockets lightly to see if anything falls out. but not really doing anything too overt and makes his way towards the exit. I look over at the second in command. If you've excuse me, my friends have exited. I wish to check in with them to make sure that they do not get into too much trouble. Yeah, yeah, pleasure. See you later, Corrin. Zinn.
Starting point is 01:23:06 Zin. No. Outside, the moon is full, illuminating the can't. be when you hear, pss, hey, around the corner of the building, you see the Kachua Bara signaling towards you. I'm not run over there. In between a couple of buildings. He's standing.
Starting point is 01:23:27 He's got a satchel in one hand. And he says, uh, so what are you willing to trade for it? I've got a juicy one here. And he kind of jangles the purse. Uh, how do you deal with prevergency? I deal just fine. what you got? I've got an old explosive.
Starting point is 01:23:48 An actual functioning explosive? No clue never tried to blow it up yet, but could be. Hmm. And you, what do you got? He gestures towards Bebo. Today I have four main limbs, 17 smaller limbs, and a lot of olfactory holes.
Starting point is 01:24:10 Uh, I got a gal-girlfriend. I don't need whatever. it is, you got, uh, all right. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, pre-verting explosive. I think I can make that work. We gotta see the goods first, though. Yeah, yeah, yeah, here's the goods and he holds up the, the, the, the satchel, and as he's opening it, you hear behind you, hey, what's going on there? There are three red crown guards, all of them noticing the three of you. That better not be a, a drug trade going on. Very quickly, an old hand. I'm going to
Starting point is 01:24:44 Sign down to Bebo, quick grab it. Okay. So Bebo sees this, signs back. Already done kind of a thing. And he's going to, that same cloud that obscured him back on the ship during the first excursion, he creates this dense cloud of these spores
Starting point is 01:25:09 that are thicker and less, or more opaque than the other ones, that just kind of randomly spurt out of his body. But it almost looks like he's disappeared because it's dark and there's just not a lot of way to see where he went. And with this invisibility almost, he's going to weave,
Starting point is 01:25:28 kind of changing where his position actually is and then come at the bag from the opposite way, kind of snatching it out of this person's hand. Roll with a cut of one. The Kachua Bora drug salesman is kind of distracted by the guards that have appeared, quick enough that the satchel is immediately pulled from his hands. But instinctively, he says, hey, wait a minute.
Starting point is 01:25:55 He reaches into the cloud kind of scratching it whatever he can. Bebo, take a point of aspect damage as he rakes across your back as you turn. What's the twist? Oh, the twist is the cloak that Bebo is wearing because he was so inspired by the matching uniforms of their rivals earlier. he painted his uniform to look like theirs. So for all intents and purposes, it looks like it's their rival's uniform
Starting point is 01:26:23 that tears off into the hands of this individual. Kesa immediately is going to put his hands up, but just as quickly as his hands go up, his left sneaks into his backpack, his little side satchel, and pulls out the ceremonial dynamite that he was going to make the deal with anyways. And on that, he's like,
Starting point is 01:26:44 Fine, fine, I'll fucking give it back here. And he hands the dynamite back to the shark individual and looks to the guards. Listen, I don't want any trouble. I'm not from here. And he puts his hands up. Sure enough, you hand over the explosive device to the Katowbara who seems happy with it, but then realizes he's been caught in an illicit trade and beelines it in the opposite direction of the guards Two of the guards begin running, but one of the guards stays as, hey, you, stay where you're at. He gestures to you, Keza, whistling, blowing on his whistle to call for reinforcements.
Starting point is 01:27:28 Exiting the building. I go right back inside and grab the captain. I yell for the cap. Captain, we need to make a hard exit. Yeah, yep, yep, I'm right behind you. And he comes scuttling behind. Bebo looks around for a quick exit in a small area. So like an area that he can kind of mash his way through that others might not be able to follow.
Starting point is 01:27:56 He's looking to make an escape. It is so crowded and congestion here in Midway platforms and rope bridges all over the place. And you are able to dodge them for now. They're spotlights not able to allow. illuminate your body as you escape into the dark. Kesa, there's one guard that is trying to approach you. As he's approaching, he looks him square in the eyes. He says, how often do you run the Krez?
Starting point is 01:28:30 What are you talking about? More often than me. And then he's going to take a running jump off of the nearest wall, scale to the next, and then scramble for the roof of this place, and then just start making a part. cord exit back towards the area of the dock to the best of his ability, hoping to outrun this fool. Wait. Easy enough, it's impressive the way you're able to leap across and pass this individual.
Starting point is 01:29:02 He yells out to his allies, they're headed towards the docks, but you're able to avert them for now. All four of you are able to make it to the docks, your ship within sight, but you can hear and see the sounds of these guards trying to chase after you. They're just moments behind. I immediately get upon the ship and begin prepping it for disembarkment.
Starting point is 01:29:27 But hold until I can see the rest of the crew. Zenko runs immediately to the helm and in a moment the engine comes roaring to life. It's so fucking loud. It is the loudest whistling
Starting point is 01:29:42 noise echoing throughout this entire. section of the sitting. Veebo clambers up the side. He's in the same rigging he used to paint the ship earlier, kind of pulling up the last of the bucket and getting prepared in the hold. I think Keza is like last two arrive, but he's waving his arms big and wide as he's coming. Start the fucking shit, please get it moving, go! From the opposite side, two guards are running to meet you.
Starting point is 01:30:12 They're about to tackle you. about to tackle you, make a reaction roll to avoid them. They both leap towards you, but you recall the side step that Zinn taught you. Step off to the side and they both crash into each other. Their heads lolling as they try to recover from the dizziness. It worked. Zinn, it worked. It fucking worked.
Starting point is 01:30:37 I'm never talking bad about the side step again. Get on the ship. The ship is already in motion as Keza makes his final leap. Oh, yeah. Oh, and I scramble up onto the top and roll onto my back and I'm staring up just straight up at the canopy in the sky. And just as I'm breathing in the last final breaths of freedom, I'm realizing that the paint is still wet.
Starting point is 01:31:04 In the back of my body is all covered in blue now on my coat. As this happens, Bebo having gone to the hold, it kind of drags your camera. equipment out across the ground. And without any of the finesse or care that you used to set it up earlier, he just has like a bunch of appendages holding onto everything kind of unsteadily. He's like, smile! As he takes a picture of you laying on the back of the deck.
Starting point is 01:31:32 The docks have become alive with activity. Spotlights popping on. The ship illuminated as it very quickly at its Zanko's hands begins turning and making its way out, Just as the two galleons that were guarding the entrance try to do something, you're already past it and clearing the bay, the shallows behind you as you sail into the dead of night away from Red Crown. Well, it's a good thing that our payment will be accepted outside of Red Crown. Because I don't think we can go back, and I'm okay with that.
Starting point is 01:32:14 Well, it's just a tone. It'll be fine. they'll take four limbs, it'll be fine. Lebo shoves the camera equipment away without any of the care, so it just kind of drops it in the corner, like releases all of his limbs. Everything sags, just completely deflated. Ah, well, at least we got the drugs. Yeah, at least we got the drugs. And he moves over to Bebo's pouch there and opens it up
Starting point is 01:32:45 It gets a little MacGuffin look at the moonlight cascading over the pearl inside. It's not bad. And staring at it, you can see the glimmer of some kind of memory inside, the silhouette of something that happened a long time ago in a perlessent round ball. And over the sound of the engine, you can hear the cackling and laughing of a thousand voices from your captain saying, This is why I hired you all. And he sails on into the night. And that is I think where we will bring our session to a close.
