Mayday Plays - Chapter 9: "There and Back Again" | The Happy Eater | Tales From The Wildsea
Episode Date: August 19, 2026The Godsinger crew has crossed the Greenstream, survived Ragged Wood, and secured the parasite cure. Now comes the part nobody planned for: getting Happy laid. To save him from his own self-destructi...ve heartbreak, Kezza, Bebo, and Zin have to help Happy win over the only thing he's ever truly wanted: the love of his misses, The Kraken. That means surviving its mating ritual, either impress the leviathan or be crushed and pulled into the undereaves. Between dodging tentacles, managing three enthralled captains, and trying not to become collateral damage in a kaiju romance, the crew will need every trick they've got just to get everyone out alive. It's messy. It's absurd. It might actually work. This is the final chapter of the Happy Eater tale, but we're hoping to bring you more stories from Rivenwake. If you enjoyed the journey, please spread the word, it helps more than you know, and consider supporting us on Patreon to help make the next arc happen. begins its offload of the crew split evenly amongst the three other ships. Now the godsinger
with about a dozen individuals from the Happy Eater mostly. And the screw loose,
And little rascal, helmed by the other captains, push forward as the Happy Eater begins to move forward.
Okay.
We got to pursue.
We got to stay close by.
The captains are going to hit in, I don't know, 40 minutes.
And the second that they do, the Happy's going to know.
We just have to hope that he likes us enough to let us go and cares way more about her to even register.
that this is all happening.
I had a really great moment with him yesterday.
I think the creature is
sensible,
certainly bigger than us in many ways.
At the very least,
we will be leaving post-haste.
Are we not?
We are leaving as fast as humanly possible
with everybody in tow.
We got to hope the captains snap into it and follow.
I just do want to.
to tell you, I went into the hold and I did see some pretty cool things down there.
So we let the ship go, but we also lose that, just so everyone knows.
How cool are we talking?
Like a lot of gunpowder, big metal machinery, big engine, pretty valuable stuff.
I mean, it's no sand, but pretty good.
Zenko steps forward to the helm, says, all right, I'll try to keep up at least.
and he revs the engine.
And as the godsinger catches up with the other ships,
Bebo, you're the first to notice at the masthead of the Happy Eater
is an ardent-shaped woman holding their hand out.
And that's when you notice a little glimmer.
Right in the tip of her hands is a little pearl.
There you are, he says,
His eyes getting glassy.
Zengo turns to you and says, I could try to get closer.
Oh, God, he's got another hostage.
What? I'm just saying. It could be a value.
I think it's worth it.
I'm going to leave it up to Zinn. I'm going to leave it up to Zinn.
Why would you do this to me?
I don't care about the Pearl.
I conflicted this time. I don't know about this one, guys.
I kind of like them.
He's just like the rest of us.
He's trying to figure it out.
He's scared of what the fuck's going on.
I feel like there is no need for us to get the pearl at all.
Zanko begrudgingly says,
we technically have one of our own.
You're right.
Let's just help happy out.
And he kind of straightens the ship out.
Bevo's glassy eyes,
watch the pearl and track it the entire time.
And for the second time, he says,
Goodbye, my love.
As he stretches his hand out towards
his lost treasure.
Bebo, we need to have a serious talk.
We make it out of this alive.
We make our way to the amber.
On the way over, you can have a little brain pearl.
I'm just curious.
I know, buddy.
I know.
It's a 10-minute trek as the ships climb up this ever-increasing slope of the
makeshift mangrove ramp.
And once Happy reaches the very zenith of it, he comes to a stop as the other ships also come to a stop.
And before you, you realize you are hundreds of feet above a massive chasm that stares down into the inky blackness of the under-eaves.
There is something shimmering, though, down in the deep dark.
It takes a moment for your eyes to adjust.
but Captain Zanko is the first to speak up.
Is that?
Water?
It can't be.
As you admire it for a moment, taking in this massive chasm,
that's when you hear Captain Oric calling out.
He has walked away from you and walked onto the deck of the godsinger.
All right, men, let's rattle our sabers and really impress her.
Little by little, the other sailors look around.
They pull out their swords from their scabbards and they walk up to the hall of the ship and begin kind of patting it or banging their swords and
little by little across the three or four ships a ruckus begins to rise. Many of them screaming
and just making noise until it almost sounds like a stadium of wildlings getting ready for the Rivenwake regatta.
Oh, I got this, I got this.
He runs up to the observation deck.
He runs to an emergency latch, pulls the latch back,
and hits the big red button for the whistle.
Bebo's already fitting all of the plugs into his various ear holes.
A incredibly loud horn rings out and echoes across this massive chasm,
so loud that everyone else on every other ship stops making noise.
and when the bell, when the siren stops, it echoes across and then it's just silence,
almost as if the entire wild sea has quieted.
And that's when the rumble begins.
The entire canopy begins to shake and vibrate,
and it appears that something is beginning to emerge from the inky darkness.
Captain Orick says,
She's here!
One enormous mile-long tentacle bursts from the darkness and rises up into the air.
A second emerges, rises up, and then both of them crash down hard on the opposing sides of this chasm.
You and your ramp being in the center see all of this, and it just causes so many of the iron roots to buckle under the enormous weight.
and then rising slowly, methodically out of the darkness,
this single appendage
with these glowing orbs attached to it at the top
emitting this eerie yellow light,
a slit opens up in this thing and an eyeball
entirely red and split in the middle
by this glowing yellow light
comes out of the appendage
and looks down, taking in all of you.
She's beautiful, Captain.
Captain Oric turns you and says,
isn't she?
And then his eyes roll in the back of his head
and he collapses onto the ground.
Oh shit, oh shit, okay, okay.
We got to move.
Time to go.
And we're gonna like ship signal
with our flax on either side
and then old hand out to everybody.
fuck shit, fuck shit, um, to, to pull back the line and give them some, uh, marital space.
Build a pool to let everyone know in time.
Uh, he is also going to take out that shiny wing from that bug he had surfaced before.
And he's going to use it to flag down those ships and communicate almost in, uh, I don't, what is that?
Semaphore.
What?
Yes.
Yeah.
Uh, just to assist with everything.
You send out the message, the code that you've agreed to warn everyone about.
And immediately, Zanko puts the ship into reverse and begins backing down this slope.
It's around that time that a third enormous tentacle emerges from the dark and sweeps and wraps around the happy eater,
lifting it up into the air and turning it in its shape.
The wooden facade of the ship begins to break away under the power of this tentacle and finally revealed to you is happy in all of his glory.
These massive impeller engines and enormous crates full of gunpowder falling into the darkness.
But one thing that is clear is there is a big smile on Happy's face as he's curled in the air and then sucked down into the darkness.
The God-Singer swerves and begins moving.
The little rascal does the same, turning and doing its best move.
Screw loose, missing an arm, is slowly moving, and the three of you begin to descend.
But screw loose, something emerges, explodes from beneath it, another tentacle wrapping around it,
and then pulling it down into the darkness.
The entire canopy is now shaking as the three remaining...
No, the two remaining ships are racing towards the bottom.
I need one of you to make a ship rating roll to see how you fare with a cut of one.
With the whistle safety button already off,
Bebo hits it again just for good measure as the scream of the godsinger matches the speed with which it moves through this.
obstacle, trying to get ahead of the tentacles that are reaching out of the darkness and avoiding
that same fate that they saw the other ship befall just moments before.
The godsinger and the little rascal make it to the end of the ramp using the momentum,
push through and forward. Your engine screaming as it tries, tries its best. The Leviathan
harp, you can feel in the bottom of your feet pumping as hard as it can. What's the twist?
The twist is that whatever is happening down there in the darkness with Happy's ship seems to have distracted it enough that the other limbs feel a little bit slower than the first two that moved.
The canopy moves behind the ships rising and lowering and shifting from side to side as if something Titanic is below it and giving chase.
Because of that five results, you are going to take one point of rating damage.
to the godsinger.
A wave of trees is coming behind you
as whatever Happy's misses is
is still giving chase seemingly hungry.
But the godsinger, with its incredible speed,
is able to outmaneuver it,
moving ahead of even the little rascal.
A tentacle explodes from beneath the canopy
almost hits the little rascal,
but misses disappears into the dark.
Over the calms, you hear Quentin say,
I'm taking control.
I need one more role to get out of this mess.
The godsinger, being just on the cusp of escaping this massive beast,
we start to come to the portion where the wind comes back into play,
and those pockets of air begin as the hungry bark returns.
And Keza moves up to Zanko and points out a portion through the wind that he believes,
We took correctly, we could trap the tentacles behind the bowing trees and make our escape that way, keeping it at bay.
And so points him through into there and directs our way out through the route.
He veers starboard, heads in the direction of a massive rift common throughout the raggedwood that you've seen and takes
it in faith, and sure enough, just like on the green stream, this huge gust of wind blows up
and the ship begins to rise up into the air.
Below you is nothing but chasm, and that's when you see this massive shape in the darkness
move and a single tentacle pulling along happy in his body dwarfed in size by the tentacle.
But you could swear that it's waving one of its tentacles goodbye as it dismal.
disappears under the canopy for good.
The god singer lands hard onto the thrash, and you are back on the verdancy.
But the rumbling sound of this menace goes away, and both you and the little rascal have survived the mating ritual of happy and the Krakken.
Let's take a break to thank some people.

Good luck.
And now, back to the show.
That was way more than what it was supposed to be.
He says that to Keza.
Yeah, no kidding.
The sound of the men on the deck of the ship are all slowly getting up, realizing that they survived.
Yeah, calling out.
We fucking did it!
Oh, Bibo runs around doing high fives to everyone with all of his limbs, including some of them that look like feet.
He's just like slapping every single thing on everyone's hands.
Yay! Wonderful!
Everyone stops celebrating, takes their hats off, bows their heads, and in that moment of silence here,
what the hell?
You see Captain Oric standing, rubbing the back of his neck,
as at his feet is some kind of wriggling parasite that kind of cries out and stops moving.
He looks around and says,
What are you all standing around for? Get back to work!
Zinn kneels down beside him.
You'll come to find that we are no longer aboard your ship.
As such, you don't give the orders here.
What? What? And he looks around and he's like,
Who are you? Where's my ship?
We're the choir of the godsinger.
And we just saved your life.
And your ship's busy fucking a cracking.
Welcome, Captain Oreck.
He just kind of looks out trying to take in what the hell is happening to him and his ship and where he is.
And he's sort of lost and thought wandering around the deck.
Please, scrub the poop deck if you'd like.
I'm not swabby.
any deck? Get out of my way.
He starts kind of marching away.
Bebo steps in his path,
sidles in front of him with his arms crossed.
Um, I believe on our ship, you do take orders.
You'll be reporting to Lee revenge captain.
And he gestures behind him with a flourish to point to Lee.
Lee, that traitor, I'm not doing any such.
And you, he takes the broom and Lee steps up and says,
Sorry, Oric, but they're the leaders on this ship.
You got to do as they told.
He goes to swabbing the deck, grunting the whole way.
You watch him, Lee.
Keep him honest.
Sphirna appears around the side of the ship, clapping.
Gotta give it to you, God Singers.
That was quite a show.
Pretty good, right?
Pretty good.
I, you know, I almost considered staying aboard the Happy Eater, considering no one knows what's down there.
And maybe the Cracken could use a little bit of advice, but I decided that you guys just seemed a little bit more interesting.
Well, if you want to, we could swing back around and drop you off if you're having second thoughts.
No, no, no, that's okay. I think I made the right choice.
We are kind of in the middle of Ragged Wood, and we want to get the hell out of here.
It'd be nice if there was a little miracle I could perform, and she looks at Bebo.
Bebo for a second, doesn't catch it.
And he's staring kind of open mouth there, and he's like, a miracle.
Oh, you mean loving Keza?
Yes.
I think that's a great idea.
If you fall in love with Keza, then Keza will stay.
And he begins to stomp his feet.
I don't know that anybody said anything about love.
I mean, we're just getting started here, but she walks over to.
to Kesa and puts her hand on his shoulder and says,
we're working on that part.
But if we're going to want to get out of here safely,
I think we're going to need a little bit of help.
Seeing this closeness, he just claps and smiles.
And then he's like, oh, oh, oh.
And then he reaches into his bag and pulls out at first
the gift that Kesa gave him.
And he gives it a little shake and smiles
and places it reverently back in the pouch,
pulling then out the paper mache figurine
and with much more confidence
kind of hands it with both hands presenting it
to Sphirna and says,
I think that I finally reach my destination
and hands it to her.
She takes it gingerly in her arms,
puts one hand, one webbed hand
over the head of it and says,
here's to hoping.
She twists it, twisting the head off.
I would like the three of you to tell me what is the Arcanotic miracle that occurs.
Outside of immediately being teleported to where we need to go, I got nothing.
Hey, that's not so bad.
My thought is that our ship grows arms and legs like a person.
We could just walk home.
It's faster that way.
I also thought of paper mache with it is constructed of, like,
like layers and layers.
And so I thought that maybe
the layers that were separated from us,
namely like the people on the rascal, right,
the ship that was down.
The screw loose.
The screw loose, sorry.
The screw loose crew,
like these pieces that are missing from our adventure
could be returned to us whole.
So like as though like there's layers being,
appearing onto the scene.
whatever you're keeping in mind as a loss when it's activated is like returned to you.
Ooh, we all get, yeah, we get the ship back and all of our ships kind of return to their original stock settings.
With that, like, or is that too miracle?
Is that too much to say, oh, yeah, we also, our ships get healed?
Yeah, I was picturing it more.
I mean, maybe the pieces come back, but just like not assembled, right?
So if that's something that you miss, like the shrapnel like appears on the deck or like, you know, just kind of phasing in these layers of loss.
Okay. Yeah, I'm down with it.
Sphirna splits the head and tears it off.
The fragile paper machet doll that you've been carrying for years at this point, Bebo just crumbles and falls apart and turns into so much dust.
And nothing happens.
And then there's a rumble.
And from below the thrash, one mechanical arm explodes out and then lifts up a badly torn up, screw loose,
missing now two of its arms.
But still, you can see members of the crew from that ship lift itself up and land hard onto the canopy.
Along with it, the Wild Sea pushes up random.
bits and bobs of your ship
and the screw loose
and the little rascal
enough for repairs
and makeshift to
repair your ships and put yourselves
back together. Not a total
loss. Yeah,
Kesa runs to the side
and fires the boarding winches
to help bring up
screw loose from the bottom and
bring into tow that we're now moving
again like a big fleet
and he's looking up
out as it rains nuts and bolts from the sky, and he's trying not to get pelted and die,
but he is like collecting it in a big sacks and starting to take it into the cargo hold,
where people are already scrapping in together repairs.
Bebo stands underneath a little rainstorm of sand as it falls all around him.
He's looking up, kind of like catching some and putting it into his pockets, now that he knows
the value.
And then he sees a glint from above, and he extends.
all of his limbs up in receiving of this.
And he's like, come to me!
As the brain pearl just descends in this sandstorm directly down above him.
On a pile of soft sand, the single pearl drops and then slowly rolls down its hill,
shining there.
I get my mango back.
Spherena turns to all of you with a big, toothy, sharp-toothed grin and says,
not what I was expecting, but a miracle nonetheless.
Good work, all of you.
Yeah, thanks. That was impressive.
The ships put themselves back together,
the crews swapping for the right sides.
You meet Captain Entente and Captain Legion
correctly for the first time.
Both of them much more meek and mild tempered
than their alter egos.
But they show their respects
and their appreciation for all of your hard work
and making sure that they come through this whole ordeal.
They happily trade with you any and all materials they have aboard their ships,
cargo of any kind, anything that looked appealing to you in that moment.
And they say, we're going to need a couple days to repair the screw loose,
but we're happy to follow you wherever you head.
but ultimately, once we get back
on the other side of the green stream,
we're going to need to head back to Red Crowe.
That's where we belong.
That's where we're...
Oh, that's not where we're headed.
Hmm.
Well, I think we'll make our way
through the Green Stream,
and then we can have one last night together,
have a good drink,
and find new lives,
talk about each other wherever we go.
A good word.
they call out all in unison to new lives.
To new lives.
And I do go to Sphyrna in that moment, I say,
and maybe if during that night you want to make like happy in the crack
and you just let me know.
It walks away.
Her eyes widened the brazenness of it and she calls back,
are you going to read me poetry?
That wasn't me.
I don't do poetry.
Bibo has a sit down with the Gao captain now restored and it shares that in halting Gao,
like as little as he knows, he'll try to speak it with a fellow Gao and share the story of
their adventures and tell him all about the wild scene, the things he's seen and in exchange
for stories of the captain's experience.
and he'll also let them know that there might be a rivalship looking for them
that set out on the same job and to keep an eye out on their journey home.
Hmm, I will.
You're a word bearer, aren't you?
I am.
I have a lot of letters.
Hmm.
I'm originally from Splitspeer, and I overheard you saying that you're head in there.
Do you think you can give this letter to my love?
Sure, as long as she's not a crackin.
No, she's about my height, but certainly has the fierceness of a crackin.
Sure, I can do that.
How can I find her, or what's her name?
He gives you her name and where in Split Spear you can find her.
And though one letter has been handed off, your journey as a word bearer continues as another one needs to be passed on.
I go to speak to our captain.
Well, that was certainly more of an adventure than I was bargaining for.
It always is with you three.
Good job.
I'm not exactly sure what we're meant to do from here.
If this is possibly our last mission, I...
Well, I don't believe I wanted to be my last mission.
I enjoy the action.
I don't believe retirement is for me.
especially since I don't exactly age.
I appreciate you, Salem, saying all that,
because to be honest with you, I'd hate to see any of you go.
I was hoping maybe we could do something to convince Keza to stick around.
After all, we do still have plans to head back to Shardfall.
Yes, he keeps saying one last job, but there never really is one last job,
because from this job, it leads to another job.
You know, speaking of, Zinn, how do you feel about the fact that we survived all this,
And now we're heading back to Sharfell, the place where I originally found you.
No trepidations?
I haven't looked back since you found me.
Perhaps going back where it started, I will find answers.
That's an adventure and of itself.
But at the very least, maybe I'll find another mango.
That was a joke.
He laughs with a thousand voices in recognition.
The new day comes and the ships bravely cross the green stream.
No easier, but now with the experience of it, a little less insane.
Making it to the other side, it's time to part.
The little rascal and the crew of the screw loose say their goodbyes, and they thank you.
You may add to your cargo a crate of scaffolding ships.
an ancient engine, and a chest of ichterine tobacco that they had been saving.
And during this time, each of you, a whisper comes to your mind.
Keza, the whisper of a chance meeting.
Bebo, the whisper of enthusiastic stowaway.
Zin, the whisper inside the belly.
The screw loose and the little rascal say their goodbyes,
board their ships
and then leave the godsinger alone
as they head in the northwestern direction
towards Red Crowe.
The ship, the godsinger now alone
faces in the north-eastern direction
in the direction of Splitspeer.
With you, remains Sphirna
on the deck of the ship,
staring out eagerly,
awaiting what comes next.
I think Keza is standing
by the bow or the ship
at the very top of it near Sphirna
where they've just been
like he has been taking in the night
more than anything and smoking a lot
of that new tobacco
and just letting the
survivors know that the second
we get to split spear whatever they need
to get they can get
they can have anything they need from the cargo
if it helps them on their way and
if they need to make contacts there
we can help them with that but they can't go anywhere
further than that because we're not going
any further than that.
And just trying to make sure that they feel set up.
The ectus aboard the Happy Eater approaches you and says,
I realize I've never introduced myself.
The name's Sagave.
Nice to meet you, finally, Keza.
Sugave.
Good to meet you.
I was going to ask if it was okay that we head to split spear
as we'll find some other type of vessel to board.
We won't stay with you longer unless you want us to.
Of course.
You guys are more than welcome to stay.
But after Split Spir, it's probably best we go are on way since God's anger is too.
We're sort of entering retirement in early one.
Really?
This is a fine ship.
It feels like you guys should go on forever.
It does.
And that's usually when it should end.
Well...
End on a high note, you know?
Doesn't get much higher than what we just experienced, but we'll stick with
with you as long as you need, and we're happy to help wherever we can.
And he steps away respectfully from you and Sphirna.
And I think that, you know, he just sort of waits until Bebo and Zinn collect around that space
as that, like, familiar light in his belly begins of that feeling that comes after a job
and is maybe only second to things like what he felt in that preverdent ruin.
It's the closest he gets to feeling alive.
And he's just waiting to share in it with his two closest friends.
Bebo comes up from below deck, covered in engine oil and a little bit of Leviathan heartblood
and kind of stretches out and takes in the night air, walks up to join Svirna and Kesa at the front.
and just kind of breathes out in peace for the first time in a while.
I just counted all of the loot in the cargo hold, and it's a lot, he says, smiling widely.
Good, buddy. I'm really happy for you. I mean, you're going to have so much to take care of once this whole thing's over.
You're going to be set for life. Come here, though. You got gunk, and he does take out that little hanky from his coat.
Almost a mirror to the start of the journey. He helps him.
clean up a little.
Bebo allows it and takes a look at the gunk that comes off and he's like, oh, no, not that
part. Leave that one. Thank you.
Sorry.
Kesa, I'm sure you figured out.
Some of us have no plans to retire.
Yes. Yeah. I know full well. I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get to split
spear. Last leg. Last job.
We should enjoy it right now.
We can decide all this eventually, but we did a good thing.
Out there somewhere, somebody's real happy.
Sphyrna speaks up and says, well, if he's so dumb,
he's not going to stick around one of the most exciting ships I've ever been on,
well, then he's welcome to leave, and I'm happy to take his place.
After all, I've never been to Shardfall, and I'd love to see it.
So I'm with you all, and she puts her hand.
Well, Svirna, you've proven for the hundredth time that you're too good for Kesa, he says, pointedly scrunching up his face and making a face at Kesa as he puts his hand on top of hers.
You're all too good for me.
Yeah, he still lingers on your face, like, kind of softly, like, mm-hmm.
Sick burn.
Ha, ha, ha, ha.
Captain Zanko calls out from the helm, well, we may be.
might as well give Chase now, help get to a Splitsphere in a couple of days.
Here we go.
Frrh, and that loud horn honks filling the air.
And when it stops, the engine revs, the long jaw gives purchase to the bird and sea.
And the godsinger begins sailing towards its next adventure.
And that is where we will leave our story for now.
