So I came across a bizarre story while cruising through the digital archives of the Library of Congress. We have got to dive deep into this story. So this article is dated July 16, 1900. And it comes from a publication called The Guthrie Daily Leader from Guthrie, Oklahoma. The headline is simply titled, quote, Filipino in all caps. And the subheading reads, quote, Woman Brought to Kansas City by American Soldiers, end quote. Then under that subheading, it says, Scripps Macrae Press Association.

And then the article reads as follows, quote, Kansas City July 16th. A full-blooded Filipino woman, not very large for her age, But the real thing, nevertheless, is in Kansas City at number 1011 Wyandotte Street. She was brought to this country by returning soldiers and four of her countrymen accompanied her. They were captured on Negretti's Island and of this particular race there are said to be about 25,000. The woman is not quite three feet in height.

She weighs 45 pounds and she is more than 25 years old. She has a large mouth, double rows of teeth, which are not even, coarse straight black hair, and a scalp that is as hard as iron. So a very strange story here. And this article was distributed, as I said, by Scripps Macrae Press Association, which was syndicated nationally way back in the day, meaning the exact same article may have appeared in dozens of newspapers across the United States. So this wasn't some small town podunk story just being read by a few hundred people.

Now there is obviously some big things that jump out at me in this article. It states, number one, the woman is not quite three, feet tall. This alone is crazy. It also goes on to say she has a double row of teeth, that she has a scalp that is as hard as iron. It says she was captured on an island known as Negritis, if I'm pronouncing that right. And then it says, quote, of this particular race, there are said to be about 25,000. So it's as if the author is implying that this woman or humanoid is not an isolated case, but that there was possibly like 25,000 of these dwarves or humanoids living on this particular island.

First, let's talk about this mysterious island. The newspaper mentions a Negriti's island, but this appears to be a misspelling or type-setting error for a Negros island in the Philippines. Around 1900, American newspapers frequently misspelled the names of Filipino islands and indigenous groups. Now, located in the Central Philippines, in a region known as Visayas, is a Negroes Island. And it happens to be the fourth largest island in the Philippines with a population today of about 4.5 million people. This Negros Island has long been known for its sugar cane plantations, earning it the nickname the Sugar Bowl of the Philippines.

And today it's also known for a diving and marine life, beautiful waterfalls and rainforest, volcanic landscapes, and its Spanish history and Spanish colonial history. Now this island received the Spanish name Negros because early Spaniards, associated it with its dark-skinned indigenous inhabitants. In fact, a Smithsonian-era publication even notes this explicitly stating, quote, Negros received its name because it was peopled chiefly by a dark, woolly-haired race.

Now let's talk about some legends and other historical accounts I came across. There are historical accounts of short, statured indigenous peoples on and around this negros island. The Ati, or Atai, if I'm pronouncing that right, were an indigenous Negrito people who historically inhabited parts of the Fasaiian. And early Spanish chroniclers described the Atai as dark-skinned, curly-haired, small, stature and skilled hunters and foragers. Now during the Philippine-American War between 1890 and 1902, American soldiers encountered numerous indigenous Negrito groups living in the mountains and forests of Luzon and other islands. And the article's description matches many late 19th century ethnograms.

descriptions of these Negrito peoples. Again, very short and stature, dark complexion, coarse or tightly curled black hair, living hunter-gather type lifestyles, and speaking even little Spanish or English. But what's more? There are Spanish accounts from the 1500s to the 1700s that frequently mentioned small statute of forest peoples in central Philippine islands, including Negros Island. And there's this negros oral tradition that describes, guess what, tiny people who live in the forest, tiny people who are cave dwellers, mountain spirits, and small tribes living in these remote forested regions.

And guess what else I came across? The Philippines does have evidence of an ancient, small-bodied humanoid species. In 2019, scientists described a humanoid. They called homo-luzonesis from the remains found in Calo Cave on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. right in this area. These scientists say that this, quote, species lived roughly 50,000 to 67,000 years ago and was considerably smaller than modern humans.

Okay, so this is very interesting. It's like we're getting more pieces of the puzzle here. So we have this 1900 article describing this small woman under three feet from the first. Philippines. Now we have legends of this region of small humanoids that live in the forest and caves. And now we're finding a 2019 scientific report where these scientists are describing a species that lived eons ago and was considerably smaller than modern humans. Okay, back to the article. It describes the woman as quote, not quite three feet tall.

Now, this is extraordinary. A height of under three feet would represent, obviously, an extreme medical condition. Or, I would argue, if not that, something that's not entirely human. Some other humanoid species perhaps descended from the world before the Ice Age. some would say maybe this was related to the Nephilim tribes of old as described in the book of Enoch. Now, something else I came upon. Only a few years later, there was newspapers and government reports repeating almost identical numbers. For example, I found a 1903 article summarizing a U.S. government ethnological report that states that there was roughly 30, thousand negritos it's talking about the inhabitants of this negros island that were quote the greater number are under three feet end quote now what's more i found another article from only a few years later this one was in 1903 where there is an article summarizing a u.s government ethnological report talking about thousands of negretes

toes that are under three feet tall. You have got to hear this. And at the end of the episode, I'm going to read this article in its context for you. But first, let's talk about double rows of teeth because this article says the tiny woman had, quote, double rows of teeth. Again, this is another incredible statement. Now, double rows of teeth is something you hear about often associated with large skeletons that were unearthed from the ancient mounds of North America. You see the European colonists who came to the New World, not only found a thriving culture previously settled by the Native Americans, but as their wagon trains pushed westward, the colonists also began to discover what seemed to be the remains of another culture that seemed to predate the Native Americans by thousands of years, and they would often find these giant earthen mounds

constructed with this ancient knowledge and mathematics, and these mounds had withstood the ages of time. Now, sadly today, most of these ancient mounds have been decimated by groups like the Smithsonian and others, but there are still a handful you can see today, such as Miami'sburg Mound in Ohio, It rises like 65 feet tall. There is some big mounds still at the Winterville Complex. I believe that's in Mississippi. We've got the Cahokian mound in Illinois, which is massive. It might be the biggest one.

So thankfully, there's still some ancient mounds we can see today. So you might be thinking, so what's the big deal with big mounds? Well, as the colonists and settlers would often come across these mounds and the smithms, and the Smithsonian as well, they would often dig inside or excavate them and find, guess what, the remains of skeletons often measuring seven feet tall, eight feet tall. That's usually the main height. I've also found a lot of articles, though, through the Library of Congress Digital archives that reference nine-foot skeletons, 10-foot skeletons, and others. and these skeletons were often found surrounded by artifacts, weapons, wearing copper ornaments, and sometimes possessing double rows of teeth, along with large, robust skulls.

I should point out that these skeletons were often found in caves as well. In fact, I've done full episodes dedicated to the Lovelock Cave Skeletons. You can search for that here in my podcast. or YouTube channel and watch those episodes that document the 1911 discovery of thousands of artifacts found inside Lovelock Cave and reports of large skeletons that were reported by the miners who were excavating inside the cave as well as the archaeologists who came later and the legends of the Paiute Indians that live in that region of a race of very tall what they would call it giants that had red hair. But what makes the Lovelock Cave story fascinating is that there's a handful of people who claim to have seen some of these skulls

that were discovered in a back room in the Winnamuckin Museum in Nevada. They're supposedly in a back room because the state does not recognize their legitimacy because basically they don't look or appear like they were Native American. So they're kind of off limits. But one guy in particular took a photo of these in the 70s, and if you're watching this by video, you should see it on the screen now.

But this large skull, which looks like it fits on a 8 plus foot tall body, appears to have double rows of teeth. Now, today the Smithsonian asserts there were no giant skeletons in the ancient world. but again in their actual published mound excavation reports, they detailed the discovery of many skeletons, again, measuring seven and eight feet tall. In fact, I would encourage everybody to go follow Dr. Gregory Little on Facebook or Twitter. He's an author. He's put out all kinds of books on the ancient mound builder rays, and he's always posting countless photos and articles related to,

this mystery of the ancient mound builders. And then when we look into the legends of the Native Americans themselves, along with, even with the Smithsonian was writing about in the late 1800s and early 1900s, it kind of seems like the American continent was home to some kind of powerful population of large entities that the Native Americans referred to as the Thunder people. This is the forbidden history you're not going to hear about on Wikipedia. Now, author Andrew Collins has done a lot of research on the ancient mound builders, and I thought it was interesting in reading through one of his books. He talks about how, according to the oral traditions, he's tracked in the legends, that using shamanic rituals and altered states of consciousness, combined with natural earth energies under the mounds at these earthworks, that this ruling elite class, we're talking about these seven to eight foot,

plus tall overlords, he says, according to the legends, could create portals for communication with non-human intelligences and other worldly realms. Okay, back to the article. It says, quote, her owner, end quote. Now, let's talk about this. The Philippines had just come under American control following the Spanish-American War. Again, we're talking back here at the early 1900s. Unfortunately, indigenous peoples were still sometimes transported to the United States

and displayed in fairs and museums or private exhibitions. So calling someone an owner would not have been unusual language in this time. So is this possibly why she was taken? Was it to be displayed in some kind of circus like the movie The Greatest? showmen that featured what they called all the freaks, the bearded lady, and all these people who were anomalous in that time. Now only a few years removed from the writing of this article in 1900. The 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, otherwise known as the St. Louis World's Fair, became famous for exhibiting indigenous peoples from the Philippines.

including, guess what, Negrito groups from Negros Island. Many of these Negritos were presented in so-called living villages and were intended to showcase the diversity of the newly acquired U.S. territory. And so this demonstrates that there was a broader American interest at the time in bringing indigenous Filipinos to the United States for exhibition. and this newspaper predates that fair by about four years, making it plausible that this woman was one of the earliest highly publicized cases. It's interesting the article says she was living at this specific address of 1011Yen dot street Kansas City.

This is a huge clue because it suggests she wasn't just like passing through. She was staying at a specific location. However, in my research, I could not identify what occupied this address on this date. It doesn't appear in readily searchable city references, and it doesn't correspond to museums or curiosity shops or exhibits from the public records that are at least available online. Now, in just a minute, we'll get deeper into who or what this woman may have been, but first let's talk about, again, what might have happened with this woman coming to America. Maybe she was brought by returning soldiers after the Philippine-American War, then exhibited privately. Maybe later she was absorbed into some traveling ethnographic exhibitions.

Again, it's interesting that the story seems to involve three years. fangs, a private exhibitor, a returning soldier, and that this woman looks like she might have disappeared into one of the world fairs. The phrase in the article that says, quote, communication with her owner is carried on by signs, end quote, stands out, was the owner of some kind of private exhibitor. Again, by the 1900, people from overseas were sometimes exhibited by museum proprietors, lectures, carnival owners, so maybe the private exhibitor was the owner. The article states she was brought to this country by returning soldiers.

Kansas regiments had recently returned from the Philippine-American War, and Kansas newspapers devoted extensive coverage to soldiers serving in the Philippines. However, what I'm finding is that there is no longer a Google search or chat GPT, search problem here. This is a newspaper archival issue. If I had more time than one day to study for this, my next step would be to do a deep archival search across subscription newspaper databases and museum catalogs. But this would take some money and subscriptions and more time. So maybe I'll have to do a part two on this sometime. But in closing, it's very, very, very, interesting to me that I found not only legends from this region describing tiny cave

dwellers and forest people but other corroborating sources specifically this 1903 article summarizing a U.S. government ethnological report and this article is written by a David P. Burroughs it was posted by the New York Sun and it's dated February 26th 1903 and this article is titled, quote, the Philippine Aborigines. It reads as follows, quote, David P. Barrow's chief of the Bureau of Non-Christian Tribes of the Philippines. In a report received at the War Department on the Ethnology of the Philippines

concludes that while the great majority of the population is unquestionably of Malian origin, the aboriginal race is the dwarf black people known as Negritos, little negroes. He says that the people of this race are almost the smallest on the globe and are true savages. It was thought that their numbers were dwindling and that none more than 10,000 remained in the islands, but inquiry shows not less than 30,000 of these dwarfs. Some of them are four feet in height, but the greater number are under three feet. They feed upon a roots and small game and do not live in villages but roam through the mountains in small groups of a few families each. They are timid and fearful of approach and yet to a certain extent are

feared by the more civilized tribes, Mr. Barrows says. So another fascinating article, this one's in 1903 corroborating the one in 1900, basically talking about this strange tribe, thousands of them, you could say Philippine Aborigines, as this article states, that are under three feet tall. So was this first article we read describing a severely deformed Negrito woman, or was it describing one of thousands of miniature-like humanoids that once lived in remote mountains around Negros Island? And if the latter, who were these strange peoples or humanoids and where did they descend from?
