Okay, let's talk about the giants of Lovelock Cave. Now this is part two of a three-part series, so I would suggest if you haven't already done,
Starting point is 00:02:21 so go back and listen to the last episode, which was part one, before listening to this one, so that you can get the full picture. For review, in part one, we talked about the oral tradition of the piutes of northern Nevada there regarding this red-haired race of giants
Starting point is 00:02:42 that they called the Sitika. So we talked about the oral traditions. And then we talked about the written account from one of the Paiutes themselves. Her name was Sarah Winnamaka. She was the daughter of the chief of the Paiutes back in her day, Lady 1800s. And she wrote the first known autobiography by a Native American woman. In this book, she details this ancient race of giants. And she goes on to say how she even had a dream.
Starting point is 00:03:14 dress that was passed down generation to generation that was trimmed with the hair of this savage enemy that are people once defeated. Okay, so that's how this legend went from oral tradition to the written account, but then it took on a whole new life around the early 1900s when it comes to the cave. So about 93 miles northeast of Reno and situated instead an outcrop of limestone that forms part of the Humboldt Mountains is Lovelock Cave. And it sits like an ancient fortress. I've been to this cave twice now. Once you get to the small town of Lovelock Cave,
Starting point is 00:03:57 you have to drive about another hour south, probably out into the remote wilderness, the desert wilderness. It feels like an alien landscape to find this cave. It's really hard to find. The signs are obscure. It's almost kind of like they don't. want you finding this if you know what I mean.
Starting point is 00:04:15 But once you get there, it is an impressive sight. And again, you've got to remember, like I talked about in part one, how thousands upon thousands of years ago, this landscape didn't look like it does now. It wasn't this dry desert wasteland. Thousands of years ago, that ancient prehistoric lake, Lahontan, I believe it's called, It covered much of northwestern Nevada, so it probably came right up to this cave, and it might have been more of a lush situation. And so you can see if there was giants living in this cave, it was a natural defensive position where they could hide out, seek refuge, likely from the ancient Native Americans that were wanting to,
Starting point is 00:05:08 destroy them and wipe them off the map. Okay, so here is this cave. And again, I've been there twice. As you make the approach up into the cave, it really does feel otherworldly. And as I entered, the first thing I noticed was, again, man, this would be an incredible defensive position if you're seeking refuge like these giants might have been.
Starting point is 00:05:37 And then once you get in the cave, the first thing you notice is that the ceiling inside of this cave is charred black, okay? Which takes us back to the legend. It was crazy. When I was inside the cave, you can go, I mean, they've built this staircase, kind of a deck inside, a platform. You really need a flashlight or kind of headlamp to see. It's a vast cave, I believe it's about 150 feet by 35 at its widest and longest points. And you can go really deep to the left and right side, so it's kind of long like a football field. And man, when I was in there, I was all by myself, so it's totally quiet.
Starting point is 00:06:28 I was scared to death when these owls came flying out about gaming. me a heart attack. There's people that have claimed to have found a, what they say is a giant handprint on one area. I don't know about that. I could never find that. But again, when you're in there, you get the sense that there is layers and layers of history that's been in this cave. And that's what we're going to get into now. So let's talk about the artifact and the specimens. So in the autumn of 1911, a group of miners led by a guy named David Pugh and James Hart began digging out 250 tons of bat guano to be used as fertilizer in this cave when they began to discover countless, well-preserved prehistoric artifacts.
Starting point is 00:07:23 So much so that the University of California was notified and they eventually sent out an archaeologist by the name of L. L. L. Loud. in the spring of 1912 to conduct archeological excavations. Again, at what is now known today as Lovelock Cave. Back in 1911, I don't believe it was even given a name because there are caves all over these outcroppings. This is just probably the largest one. So this archaeologist, his last name is loud.
Starting point is 00:07:55 He obtained over 10,000 artifacts and specimens from this cave. The collection was divided up between, the Nevada Historical Society and the University of California. A further excavation was conducted in 1924 by what's known as the Hay Foundation. They employed another archaeologist named M.R. Harrington, and he collaborated with Loud. Together, these guys in 1929 wrote a field guide
Starting point is 00:08:23 or a book entitled Lovelock Cave and where they mention several dates regarding when ancient inhabitants, might have first visited Lovelock Cave. The oldest date they give in their book is 4,000 BC for when they think the first inhabitants were inside this cave. Okay, let's just stop and think about that for a minute. We're talking 6,000 years old that they say this cave,
Starting point is 00:08:54 that's when inhabitants were first making homes or dwelling inside this. 6,000 years. Now, I think it might even be earlier than that. However, a mummy found nearby in Spirit Cave has been carbon-dated. Check this out at 10,000 BC. And I've got another article somewhere on that to find. The Smithsonian archaeologist actually are the ones that discovered these mummies inside Spirit Cave, carbon dating them at 10,000 BC.
Starting point is 00:09:32 Unfortunately, the archaeologist, Loud, did not maintain a comprehensive report of all the excavations, so all of the detailed information is not available. Now, these archaeologists, they found artifacts, specimens, and remnants of like advanced basketry, weaving, pipes, ice picks, nets, balls, dots, I mean, knots, darts, horns, weapons, skin, human body parts. zoomorphic stone effigies and more. Again, in their book, Lovelock Cave, Loudoun, Harrington, make the following statement that I thought was significant. They say, quote, the preservation conditions in Lovelock Cave are unusually favorable, recalling those of Egypt and Peru,
Starting point is 00:10:23 and being equaled at only a very few sites discovered in North America, end quote. So for various reasons due to the climate, just stuff getting buried, the condition that they found this stuff in was incredible. Now the Phoebe A. Hurst Museum of Anthropology at the University of California, they say, quote, Lovelock Cave, despite years of destruction, is one of the most important sites in the history of North American archaeology, end quote. And like I said in part one of this series, I would argue when it comes to giant lore in North America, what we are studying here at Lovelock Cave is one of the top three sites, accounts, stories we have of giants because of all these factors and pieces of what I call evidence come into play. So it gets better. The following are some of the most fascinating artifacts and specimens that were on.
Starting point is 00:11:30 covered. First, there is the calendar. This is a donut-shaped stone with 365 notches carved along the outside and 52 corresponding notches along the inside, which again, many believe is some kind of ancient calendar. Then there's the decoys. Eleven duck decoys made of rush and tool were found painted and feathered and are considered to be some of the world's oldest yet most elaborate duck decoys ever discovered. The original decoys are now preserved at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. And I'm going to link the article that this series is based off of in the show notes. You can click that link and see the photos of all of these pictures that I'm mentioning, or at least most of them. The duck decoys here are amazing. Okay, next they found Sandus.
Starting point is 00:12:29 The sandals found inside Lovelock Cave are not like others from the region. These tool sandals are known as V-twined bag type sandals as they are made in the same way as woven bags. There are many reports that a pair of these sandals measured 15 inches long. I couldn't quite corroborate that the way I would like to to say it's a gospel truth. But again, those rumors are out there of a 15-inch-long pair of sandals that were discovered. It gets better. Now let's talk about the burnt arrow shafts. Again, archaeologist Loudon and Harrington in their book Lovelock Cave.
Starting point is 00:13:14 They make this crazy quote here, which I think is pretty explosive. Quote, Tending to confirm the northern Paiute legend of the assault on the... the cave are the fire arrow foreshafs. A very large number of arrow fragments were found in the crevices of their rockfall blocking the mouth of the cave, as if they had been shot into it, as if fired by the flaming arrows mentioned in the legend, end quote. Okay, this isn't me making this up. this is the original archaeologist who were excavating in Lovelock Cave just made that statement about burnt aero shafts and burnt weapons found all over inside this cave and in the cave entrance giving a credence to the legend talking about the legend to me that's explosive okay now let's talk
Starting point is 00:14:20 about the giant weapon shafts. I found several statements by Loudoun Harrington that seem to indicate they're surprised at finding extremely large aeroshafts. It's almost as if it's hard for them to believe that they surmise if the arrow shafts were made for a different purpose. Check out these quotes. Quote, of weapons we found only a large, heavy, pointed foreshaft of grease, wood larger than those commonly used for arrows, end quote. Now check out this next statement. Quote, the arrow fragments and foreshafs typical of the upper levels were not found in this one, but instead a single pointed foreshaft so large that it probably belonged to an atlattel dart,
Starting point is 00:15:14 I think as I say atlattle dart, rather than to an arrow, end quote. So it's kind of like you're struggling with the size of these weapon shafts. So this brings me to the next question, where these abnormally large shafts made and used by the sitika to battle the piuse. I think so. And what I'm about to share next, I think kind of corroborates that. Let's talk about the giant pestle. Again, you've got to click the link in the show notes to go to the article version to see the picture of what I'm about to describe. but a giant pestle.
Starting point is 00:15:53 A pestle is like a, it's what the Native Americans would use to, you know, grind their food on stone. It's kind of a long, not a circle ball, but like a long stone piece. So this giant pestle was not discovered during the Loud and Heron excavations, but was found sometime after by Dr. Jean Hittor.
Starting point is 00:16:20 who is the curator of anthropology at the Nevada State Museum. And he makes the following shocking statement about this giant pestle. Check this out. Quote, we recently received a donation of a pestle that was found below the mouth of Lovelot Cave. And it is extraordinary large and very heavy. It is much larger than we usually find. It was found below Lovelauk Cave and well within the city. It's Ticca territory.
Starting point is 00:16:52 So this could have been one of the pestles used by the red-headed giants and might account for its large size because of the large people that were using it, end quote. Again, this is explosive. This is not me making this up. This is not some blogger writing this. This is Dr. Jean Hattori, curator of anthropology at the Nevada State Museum. who is saying this gigantic pestle. And when you see the picture,
Starting point is 00:17:26 no normal human could use this to pick up and start grinding their wheat or something. This is massive. It was made for a massive creature. And it was found below Lovelock Cave. And he says this again might corroborate the ancient legend of these giants. So that brings me to the next.
Starting point is 00:17:50 question. Why is this giant pestle only able to be seen in a private back room at the Nevada State Museum and not on display for public viewing? I've been to the Nevada State Museum. I saw
Starting point is 00:18:06 their Lovelock Cave display and nowhere is this pestle nowhere is this pestle to be seen in public in a normal display and again in doing for research you have to get permission to go in a back room and see it. Okay, I should stop and say that
Starting point is 00:18:27 when you go to Lovelock Cave and read the public display about it, when you go to the Humboldt Museum, which we'll talk about in part three, when you go to this museum in Reno, the Nevada State Museum, nowhere, anywhere, when it comes to the Lovelock Cave artifacts, does it say anything at all about giants, red-headed giants. And again, I think that's why this pestle is not on public display is because it doesn't fit the narrative. People would start
Starting point is 00:19:00 asking, why is this so big? So it's pretty amazing to me that we now have both the original archaeologist who first excavated Lovelock Cave as well as the curator of anthropology at the Nevada State Museum on record validating the oral tradition of the Paiutes and the written
Starting point is 00:19:16 record by Sarah Winnom Mucka regarding a race of red-haired cannibalistic giants called the Sitika. Now again in their 1929 book Lovelock Cave, archaeologists Loud in Harrington, they state the following, quote, The Northern Paiute have accounts of an extinct people living in various localities in Nevada, which recall the beliefs in northwestern California regarding an ancient, now extinct race of supernatural beings, end quote. Again, I hope you're enjoying this episode because to me this is fire. These are explosive quotes I have found for you coming straight from the original archaeologist themselves.
Starting point is 00:20:06 I mean, these guys really knew about this ancient legend. They talk about it all over in their book. It's like they're full on believers. Now, Richard J. Dewhurst, he's a researcher and an Emmy Award-winning writer. He authored the book, The Ancient Giants Who Ruled America. I own this book, a great book. He has a lot to say about Lovelock Cave and some of what I am sharing with you came from his book. So get that book.
Starting point is 00:20:37 He makes the following, quote, quote, the artifacts themselves prove that an end up An advanced culture did indeed predate the Paiute Indians, end quote. Again, that's coming from Emmy Award winning writer and author Richard J. Dewhurst. Okay, now let's talk about a humanoid that was discovered inside this cave. Again, there's a lot of talk about the giants that were supposedly discovered inside this cave, and we're going to get to those in the next episode, Part 3. But most people don't know or skip over this crazy discovery inside Lovelock Cave of what I just basically call it the humanoid. Again, click the link in the show notes to see the photograph that I found in the book by the original archaeologist, Loud and Harrington, called Lovelock Cave.
Starting point is 00:21:39 This is their photograph. So as I scoured through the photos in Loudoun Harrington's Field Report, I was shocked to see this photograph of what appears to be a childlike humanoid that had been mummified and wrapped in a woven fur robe. When they discovered it, it was wrapped in a woven fur robe. Crazy. Now, when you consider the size of the skull, in comparison to, the size of the body.
Starting point is 00:22:13 It's got this huge kind of bulbous head elongated. Really, I mean, it looks like your classic alien picture. It's got this huge head, small scrawny body.
Starting point is 00:22:31 It's got large eye sockets. It's got this smallish face and jaw. And it's got I don't know if it's a piece of hair coming off the back or if it's part of the robe, but it's very strange. Very humanoid-like does not look human at all.
Starting point is 00:22:58 And again, this is yet another strange genetic anomaly, such as the red hair and the gigantic size of the citica that we're going to talk about. the final and third part of this three-part series. So I hope you guys enjoyed this episode of Unlocking Lovelock Attack of the Red Hair Giants. We've now now hit the oral tradition of this story or the legend. We talked about the written account from Seruana Makka. We talked about the cave, the artifacts, and the specimens and found inside the cave, and this crazy and intriguing humanoid that was found in the cave. So coming up next in the grand finale of this three-part series, we are going to talk about what the archaeologist discovered regarding larger than normal skeletons with red hair. You guessed it.
Starting point is 00:24:05 as well as what some of these miners claimed to have uncovered, which were seven to ten foot giants. I've even found old newspaper articles from the Lovelock area documenting these giant finds. We're going to talk about that. I'm going to talk about some eyewitness accounts and photographs of these giant skulls that some people claim to have seen.
Starting point is 00:24:36 and even taking photographs of and I'm going to link to the photograph in part three. You are not going to want to miss it. And it does seem like there's an apparent cover-up to erase this story and these skulls from history. Well, again, I hope you enjoy this episode. Please make sure to subscribe to this podcast from wherever you'd like to listen.
Starting point is 00:25:00 And until next time in part three, keep exploring.
