Megalithic Marvels - Lion-Men of the Ancient World: Myth… or Something More?
Episode Date: September 4, 2026For tens of thousands of years, mysterious beings combining the features of humans and lions have appeared throughout the ancient world. From the remarkable prehistoric Lion Man figurine of Europe to ...the sphinxes and lion-human hybrids of Egypt, Mesopotamia, and beyond, why did ancient cultures repeatedly depict these strange beings? In this episode, we investigate the origins of the Lion Men, their symbolism, and an enduring question: were they simply creatures of mythology—or echoes of something much older?

So ancient history is chock full of legends and writings regarding mysterious lion-like hybrids.
Here are two strange Old Testament Bible scriptures that seem to refer to lion-like men.
First Chronicles 128 states,
And of the Gadites, they're separated themselves unto David and to the hold, to the wilderness, men of might, and men of war fit for battle,
that could handle shield and buckler whose faces were like the faces of lions and were as swift as
the rose upon the mountains. And then you have 2nd Samuel 2320 which says in Benaya the son of Jehuita
the son of a valiant man of Cosbel who had done many acts he slew two lion like men of moab.
Now in just a bit we'll get into breaking down kind of the Hebrew behind these
scriptures and what it might mean but first let me give a quick overview of what the
Bible and the book of Enoch calls the Nephilim as I believe it'll help us set up
who these lion-like hybrids might have possibly been so in many places in the Bible
in the Old Testament portion it speaks of giants and usually when you see the word
giants it's translated as Nephilim so Nephilim is translated
translated as giants. It's interchangeable. And again, there's so many Bible scriptures I could read.
I'm going to read you probably the two most famous ones. So Genesis chapter 6 verse 4 states,
there were giants on the earth in those days and also afterward when the sons of God
came into the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who
were of old men of renown.
Next we have the book of Numbers, chapter 13, verse 33.
It says, quote, there we saw the giants.
The descendants of Anak came from the giants.
And we were like grasshoppers in our own site.
And so we were in their sight.
Now, what the Bible mentions about giants, specifically like Genesis 6'4,
it's kind of real generic.
It's like a sweeping overview.
but the book of Enoch breaks it down in much more detail.
Now the book of Enoch is not part of the canon of scripture.
It's not a part of the official Bible, basically.
Yet it is a very ancient book that talks about Bible characters like Enoch
and actually the Bible in the book of Jude,
which is the second to the last book in the Bible, right before Revelation.
This book actually quotes the book.
Book of Enoch. Okay, so giving it quite a bit of credibility. Okay, so now I'm going to read for you
two portions out of the Book of Enoch. Again, the book of Enoch is going much further in depth
in what Genesis 6-4 says in a sweeping overview. So the book of Enoch chapter 6 verse 1 says this,
and it came to pass when the children of men had multiplied that in those days were born unto them
beautifully and comely daughters.
And the angels, the children of the heaven,
saw and lusted after them,
and said to one another, come,
let us choose us wives from among the children of men
and beget us children.
So going back real quick,
Genesis 6.4 mentioned the sons of God
came into the daughters of men and bore giants.
Many skeptics will say that the sons of God mentioned in Genesis 6.4,
do not mean angels. They mean the sons of Kane, an evil lion. Yet that wouldn't account for all of the
genetic anomalies that are always mentioned with the Nephilim, giant stature, six digits. So you might say,
well, okay, even if they were angels, angels can't breed. They don't have sexual organs. Now,
one thing I would say to counter that argument is what Genesis chapter 18 states in the story where
it clearly says angels, the angels came and visited Abraham, and they obviously manifested in a sense
where they took on flesh, because Abraham washes their feet and he feeds them a meal. And then the next
thing we see these angels doing is they're going to the city of Sodom and Gomorrah, and they're going
to pronounce judgment on it and rain fire down on it. But before they do, it states that all the men of
Sodom gathered around the house where these angels were staying with Lot,
and the men basically wanted to defile them, if you know what I mean.
So clearly, these beings, angelic beings, took on some kind of form, some kind of flesh,
to the point where the degenerates of Sodom and Gomorrah wanted to abuse them.
Back to Enoch chapter 6, like I said, it's getting way more specific than Genesis'
says six four. It doesn't say the sons of God. It flat out says angels married daughters of men and had
children. Okay, so let's read one more portion out of Enoch chapter seven now. Verse one, it says,
and all the others, together with them, took unto themselves wives, and each chose for himself one.
And they began to go in unto them and to defile themselves with them. And they taught them charms and
enchantments and the cutting of roots and made them acquainted with plants. And they became pregnant,
and they bore great giants, who consumed all the acquisitions of men. And when men could no longer
sustain them, the giants turned against them and devoured mankind. And they began to sin against
birds and beasts and reptiles and fish and to devour one another's flesh and drink the blood
then all the earth laid acquisition against the lawless ones wow so much to unpack here in enoch
chapter seven but to boil it all down it's basically saying that angels took on form bred with human
women their progeny were these giants what the bible calls the nephalim
And these giants begin to ravish the earth and ravish mankind.
It's like they literally were eating everything, even to the point where they were consuming humans.
They were cannibals drinking blood.
And this portion in Enoch also seems to hint that they were also defiling the animal kingdom.
Or it says they sinned against the birds and the beasts and the reptiles and the fish.
and so forth. Now there's another ancient manuscript, an ancient text that was found amongst the
Dead Sea Scrolls. It's known as the Book of Giants. And again, this is another ancient text.
It seems to confirm what the book of Enoch just hinted at even more specifically. And it says
this in the book of giants, quote, 200 donkeys, 200 asses, 200 rams, 200 goats, 200 beasts of the field
were selected for miscegenation.
They defiled, they begot giants and monsters,
and behold, all the earth was corrupt, end quote.
So again, this is saying they seem to have defiled the animal kingdom
and not only begot giants, but this says monsters.
So are these, quote, monsters that the book of giants references here,
are these like chimeric animal hybrose?
of the old world. Now there is a decorated historian from the first century known as Titus Flavius
Josephus, a first century Roman and Jewish scholar. One of his most important works was called
the Antiquities of the Jews, where he's writing about the history of the Jews in their wars with
Rome. Now in this book and in others Josephus, again, a secular historian writes about the
giants of the old world. And here's probably one of his most famous mentions of ancient giants.
He says, quote, there were till then left the race of giants who had bodies so large and countenances
so entirely different from other men that they were surprising to the sight and terrible to the
hearing. The bones of these men are still shown to this very day, unlike to any credible relations,
of other men, end quote. So what I find so fascinating about this Josephus quote is he writes from the
first century is he says there was a race of giants, they had large bodies, they had countenances
entirely different from other men. Is he hinting at hybrids, lion-like hybrids? Is he hinting at
elongated skulls? I definitely think so. Now Josephus also mentions that they were terrible to the
hearing, and I've outlined in other episodes I've done or other podcasts I've been on,
where I wonder if this doesn't hint at the elongated skulls they had that might have enabled
them to communicate at high-level frequencies that maybe were horrible for humans to hear,
terrible for the eardrum. Maybe they could speak telepathically. But the key thing that Josephus
mentions, he says, the bones of these men are still shown.
to this very day. So to me that means that in Josephus' day of the first century,
AD, in their museums, they had on display the bones of the giants, the men of renown, the Nephalim.
Many others would refer to these giants of old as the Onanaki of Mesopotamia.
That's the non-biblical kind of version of the story or name.
Now, Gary Wayne, who I will reference several times throughout the remainder of this episode, he is the author of the Genesis 6 conspiracy.
And he's actually got two books out on it now, must-reads.
He goes so in depth into this topic of the Nephilim, of the giants of the old world.
But he writes how the Nephilim were prideful beasts filled with hubris.
And hubris derives from a Greek word meaning pride.
or excessive behavior, dangerous overconfidence, and the refusal to stay within due bounds.
Gary goes on to say that it's odd how a group of lions forming a social unit is also called a pride.
So one might wonder as to the relationship between a pride of lions and the Nephalim.
Gary goes on to say that certainly lion imagery surrounds royalty just as serpent and dragon imagery
does. So one might ponder over the Lion King fairy tales and the cryptic Lion Man and the Lion God
mythologies. So is there a hidden connection between lions Nephilim and kingship? Okay, so check this out.
The Loan Minch figurine, also called the Lion Man of Holenstein Stodl, is a prehistoric ivory
sculpture discovered in Holenstein-Staddle, a German cave in 1939. Why is this important? The German name
Lowensmensch means lion person or lion human. And it's used most frequently because it was discovered
and exhibited in Germany in this cave. And it's an anthropomorphic figurine combining a human-like body
with the head of a cave lion.
Now, by carbon dating the layer in which it was found,
it is estimated, get this,
to be between 35,000 and 41,000 years old.
It is one of the oldest known examples of an artistic representation
and the oldest confirmed statue ever discovered on planet Earth.
An example of zoomorphic art,
it was carved out of a mammoth ivory using a flint stone knife.
And after several reconstructions that have incorporated newly found fragments,
the figurine now stands in total at 12.2 inches tall, 2.2 inches wide, and 2.3 inches thick.
And it's currently on display in the Museum of Oom, I believe it's pronounced in Ome, Germany.
All right, well, that was Germany.
Now let's go to ancient Persia.
Mithra of the Zoroastrian cult of Persia in India
was often depicted as a lion-headed god
with a snake wrapped around him.
Then in ancient Greece, we have the Greek chimera,
which had a body and head of a lion,
a goat's head coming out of the back of its neck,
and a serpent tail, and it breathed fire.
Now, according to Greek mythology,
this chimera was a monstrous fire-breathing,
creature from Lycia in Asia Minor, and it was composed of different animal parts.
Usually it's depicted as a lion with a lion's body, and it has this weird goathead
protruding from the back of its neck or the back of its head, and it's got a tail that
ends with a snake's head.
Some representations also include it having dragon's wings.
But this word chimera basically means a hybrid creature.
Now, in the Iliad, Homer described the chimera saying, quote,
She was of divine stock, not of men.
In the fore, part a lion, in the hinder a serpent, and in the midst a goat, breathing forth in terrible, wise, the might of blazing fire, end quote.
So it's almost like Homer when he says she was of divine stock, not of men.
it seems like he's hinting at the gods.
Again, this takes us back to the book of Enoch,
the Genesis, or the gods, little G,
or these fallen watcher angels are breeding with earthwomen creating these hybrids.
All right, we can't talk about ancient lion hybrids
without going to Egypt.
So the ancient Egyptians deified,
and depicted lion-human hybrids everywhere, such as the great Egyptian warrior goddess Sechmet,
who was depicted as this lioness god, known as the fiercest of warriors, a terrifying goddess,
worshipped as the destroyer. And then in the Egyptian Book of the Dead,
we have lion god guardians protecting the gateway to the underworld or the heavenly domains.
Now we can't leave Egypt without talking about the great sphinx of the world.
Giza and all over ancient Egypt are these ancient sphinx-like statues. The great sphinx of Giza
by the great pyramids is obviously the granddaddy of them all. Now it seems like more and more
historians and researchers like Dr. Robert Schock are believing that the great sphinx is much
older than we've been told that it was likely built in the age of Leo, circa 10,000
BC. Now, according to Dr. Robert Schock, geologist, on the body of the sphinx and on the walls
of the sphinx enclosure are heavy erosional features that he concluded could only have been
caused by massive rainfall and water runoff, which he believes coincides with the end of the last
ice age. And when you look at the sphinx, it clearly has a lion body, yet it's got this
Egyptian pharaoh-looking head. But if you look closely, especially if you look at a drone
eye view of the sphinx or a view of it from the sky, you can see that its head is way smaller
than the body. And the head is much more defined than the eroded body. So it's likely that the head
was recarved by the dynastic Egyptians sometime between 3,030 BC, but that the head was originally different.
Now, I don't have time to go into it now, but there is evidence that suggests the original carved head of the sphinx was not an Egyptian pharaoh, but it was a head of a lion, or more specifically, a lioness.
Either way you spin it, the Great Sphinx is a hybrid. It's a lion-human hybrid. So the question is, were the pre-Diluvian ancient Egyptians, and even the dynastic Egyptians later, were they carving and depicting and deaferencing and deaferring?
lion hybrids that they actually saw or heard about in their legends.
Now let's go to Mesopotamia.
The Irma Hulow of Sumerian legend were a ruthless lion-man race, warriors showing no mercy.
Lion-men warriors of ancient Babylon and Akkad possessed lion heads, men's bodies,
birds' feet, and identified with Nergal, God of the underworld.
Then we have the Lamassu, human-headed, eagle-winged bulls or lions that once protected cities in Mesopotamia.
They were believed to be very powerful creatures and served both as a clear reminder of the king's ultimate authority and as symbols of protection for all people.
The Mesopotamians believed the Lamassu frightened away the forces of chaos and brought peace to their homes.
The Lamassu in Akkadian language means protective spirits or celestial beings.
And Lamassu frequently appear in Mesopotamian art and mythology.
The first recorded Lamassu comes from circa 3000 BC.
In the ancient writing, the epic of Gilgamesh, the Lamassu are symbols of the starry heavens, constellations, and the zodiac.
And what's so incredible is these ancient Mesopotamians depicted these Lamassu in their statues.
I was just at the British Museum this past summer, and there I got to see the incredible ancient Mesopotamian Lamassu statues.
These things were larger than life, simply colossal.
And to get to stand up next to them was really a major bucket list item.
And it really gives you a feel for what they thought these Lamassu were.
These were hybrids.
These were part man.
These were part lion.
They had wings.
And these were hybrids.
They were chimeric.
And they appear to have been absolutely massive.
Now back to the epic of Gilgamesh real quick.
King Humbada of the Cedar Forest,
who's mentioned in the epic of Gilgamesh,
he has the face and the paws of a lion, bullhorns,
vulture claws, serpent's tail,
and was covered in snake-like scales.
So again, another chimeric depiction here in the epic of Gilgamesh.
Something else interesting are these creatures mentioned in the book of Revelation
that stand around of the heavenly throne.
Now Gary Wayne breaks down how biblical cherubim or sphinx
like they possess the face of a lion, man, ox, and eagle. So interesting. It gets my head spinning
with things of as above, so below. So let's end this with some theories on what these lion-like hybrids
of the old world might have been. Let's go back to these two scriptures that I read at the beginning
in the Old Testament. Now, Gary Wayne, he states that the lion-like men mentioned were likely
warrior king offspring of powerful gods, fallen angels, just like the Nephilim. He writes,
These lion-like men surface at the time of David when he and his mighty men are killing
the giants, the Refayim, who are the descendants of the Nephilim. So let's read again,
First Chronicles 128, it says, and of the Gadites, they're separated themselves unto David
and to the hold to the wilderness men of might and men of war fit for battle that could handle shield and buckler
whose faces were like the faces of lions and who were as swift as the rose upon the mountains.
Now these Gadites mentioned here were quote wilderness men.
That phrase derives from the word gibberim, which can mean giant as Nephilim were described as mighty,
ones or gibberim in genesis chapter six four so according to gary wayne these gaddites were men of might mighty warriors who were as
fleet of foot as gazelles and as titans were renowned for and they certainly seem to be lion-like nephalim heroes of old he says
gary continues that angel names tend to end in l as in gabriel or azazel in the book of enoch if one adds the suffix
L to Ari one arrives at Ariel as it possible connect the dots as to who spawned these lion-men beasts.
Now Lion men surfaced again in the book of 2nd Samuel, where Bena slays two lion-men of Moab.
So let's read this again, 2nd Samuel 2320.
It says, quote,
In Benaya son of Jehuita, the son of a valiant man of Cobziel, who had done many acts,
He slew two lion-like men of Moab.
According to Gary Wayne, this phrase lion-like men in 2 Samuel derives from the root word Ariel, A-R-I-E-L, meaning heroic,
which translates as Nephilim or Mighty Ones.
Also, this word lion-like or lion-of-God comes from the root word for lion.
And Hebrew mysticism also notes an angel named Ariel, A-R-I-E-L, meaning Lion of God.
So to this same conclusion, the Hebrew word, Strong's concordance number 740, Ariel, A-R-I-E-L, is noted as the same as 739.
Ariel, A-R-I-E-L for Lion, with Ariel meaning lion or lionness of God.
Therefore, one has to wonder whether a powerful angel named Ariel created a second race of prideful beasts with lion characteristics that dwelt alongside the serpent-like Nephilim created by seraphim watchers.
Now, last but not least, in 2017, Forbes magazine published an article titled What Causes Lion Face?
syndrome of the skull. And they posted a shocking photo of a real actual skull on display in Italy at the
University of Balona. Now if you're watching the video version of this episode, you're going to actually
see photographs of this skull. And I'll read just a couple quick portions of this article.
It says, quote, the medical term for Leon Tiasis Osea was first used by ancient Greek physician
Rufus of Ephesus to describe bone changes caused by disease that made the sufferer appear to have a lion-like face.
Although Rufus thought that lion-face syndrome was caused by leprosy, today doctors know that it can be the result of a number of different diseases.
Lionface syndrome is quite rare and involves extra growth of bones of the face.
The term Leontyasis is not used much anymore since historically it was attributed to a number.
of different diseases. So again, you read this article, and they say that this skull is the result of
this disease known as Leontyis Ocea, if I'm even saying that right. And it's given that name because
this skull was excavated at the turn of the 20th century by Nicholas Leon, the founder of Mexican
physical anthropology. So you read this article, they point out how Rufus of ancient Greece called it
Lion Face Syndrome. Today they call it this other term based off the doctor who,
studied the skull, but then they admit they don't really know why this is caused.
They say it can be caused from a number of different diseases.
What's crazy is that in 2005, a medical doctor named Hutan Ashrafian argued that the sphinx's face
was similar to this lion-like face skull.
He wrote that since the sphinx is part lion and since this disease, they call Leontyisus,
has been known for millennium, it is possible.
that the model for the Sphinx was someone suffering from a condition that led to Lontiasis.
Okay, so where am I going with all this?
Is this lion-face skull that we're looking at?
Is it actually just the skull of a lion-like hybrid?
As crazy as that might sound.
And what gives me the courage to ask this is seeing the Pyrrarchus skulls of Peru up close.
Nobody can convince me that those are just human-sumns.
skulls that were cradle headboarded. Some of the skulls have 40 or 50% more cranial mass
than human conventional skulls. So cradle headboarding, it can change the shape. It cannot add
more cranial mass to a skull. What's more, they have way bigger eye sockets. They have bigger jaws.
All to say, these paracus elongated skulls were on
entities or beings that were likely four foot tall.
What's more is the parochus skulls are also missing sagittal sutures that we have in the back of our heads,
and the form in magnum, the hole where the neck attaches in the center bottom of our skull.
On the paracus elongated skulls, it's in the very back.
That is genetic.
Now, yes, many of the ancient humans living two and three thousand years ago in paracus area of Peru,
they were emulating these hybrids by cradle headboarding their skulls.
And that's why you see many skulls that look like they have a weird shape,
but there's no added cranial mass.
All that to say, I believe the parochus skulls are hybrids,
and I didn't even get into the DNA and genetics that others have traced.
So I bring that up to say, is this something similar?
Is this skull on display in Italy that supposedly shows you a feeling?
of this disease known as Leontyis is it actually evidence of a Nephilim lion-like hybrid
of the old world or a descendant of one that lived as late as the 18th or 19th century?
Well, I hope you enjoyed this episode.
