Megalithic Marvels - The New York Times on Mystery Mounds & Large Skeletons

Episode Date: January 24, 2025

What if I told you that the European colonists who made their way to the New World not only found a thriving culture previously settled by Native Americans, but also began to discover the remains of a...nother culture that seemed to predated the Native Americans by thousands of years? As their wagon-trains pushed westward, why did these settlers often find giant earthen mounds engineered with an ancient knowledge and mathematics that had withstood the ages of time? And to their amazement, when these colonists would often dig inside of these mounds, why would they find the remains of skeletons measuring anywhere from seven to ten feet in length, often buried with copper ornaments and weapons? And why did reputable newspapers like the New York Times publish these strange accounts by the thousands all the way up until the early 1900s?

Starting point is 00:00:29 If you're not subscribed, please do me the honor of subscribing. and if you're on Spotify also give me a five star rating if you can that helps me to break through the algorithms and reach more people well it is a beautiful day here in the pacific northwest where i'm recording this from in an undisclosed location in my little studio here it's a very cold day it's in the low 30s right now it's like noon right now but it is beautiful we got the blue sky out the sun is shining just a few clouds. So for those of us who live in the Pacific Northwest, that makes us so happy.
Starting point is 00:01:11 Because we get to see this thing called the sunshine that eludes us most of the year. I'm in an extra good mood because the sun's out and I'm really excited about this episode. So what if I told you that the European colonists who began to make their way to the new world not only found a thriving culture previously settled by the Native Americans, but as their wagon trains pushed westward,
Starting point is 00:01:40 they also began to discover the remains of another culture that seemed to predate even the Native Americans by thousands of years. Giant earthen mounds, constructed with an ancient knowledge and mathematics, had withstood the ages of time, and were found by these settlers unscathed by severe climate conditions and earthquakes over the millennia. Now, sadly today, most of these ancient mounds have been decimated and flattened and excavated by the Smithsonian Institute. However, there are still a few mounds that can be seen today that are scattered across North America. And if you're watching by way of video, you're going to see some of these mounds now, such as the Cahokohomans.
Starting point is 00:02:29 mounds in Illinois, serpent mounds in Ohio, the Pinsen mounds in Tennessee, you've got the Moundville, Alabama Mounds, and you get the Spiral Mounds in Oklahoma, and some others that still can be seen. But as the colonists and settlers would come across these mounds, they would often begin to dig inside of them. And to their amazement, find the remains of skeletons measuring anywhere from seven to even 10 feet long. These skeletons were often wearing copper ornaments. Some of them are said to have had double rows of teeth. Many of them had strange, robust skulls, some even large enough to slip over the average man's head. From the late 1700s, all the way up to the early 1900s newspapers like the scientific American and the New York Times documented these discoveries.
Starting point is 00:03:32 And anyone can go to the Library of Congress and search for these articles online. And again, all of these are taken from the New York Times. And again, if you're watching by way of video, you're going to see their copyright proof on the screen. Okay, this first article was published December 20, 1897 in the news. New York Times. The title is, Wisconsin Mound Opened. The subtitle is skeleton found of a man over nine feet high with an enormous skull. It reads as follows. Maple Creek, Wisconsin, December 19th. One of the three recently discovered mounds in this town has been opened. In it was found the
Starting point is 00:04:14 skeleton of a man of gigantic size. The bones measured from head to foot over nine feet and were in a fair state of preservation. The skull was as large as a half-bushal measure. Some finely tempered rods of copper and other relics were lying near the bones. The mound from which these relics were taken is 10 feet high and 30 feet long and varies from 6 to 8 feet in width. The two mounds of lesser size will be excavated soon. So my key takeaways for this article was this mound was discovered
Starting point is 00:04:52 in Wisconsin, apparently there was other mounds around it, and there was a nine foot, a long skeleton with a supposed enormous skull. And with it were found rods of copper and these relics. So it appears to have been a burial inside this mound. Okay, this next article was published by the New York Times, May 4th, 1908. The title of the article is Giant Skeleton. found. The subheading is Cave in Mexico gives up the bones of an ancient race. The article reads as follows. Boston May 3rd, Charles C. Clap, who has recently returned from Mexico, where he has been in charge of Thomas W. Lawson's mining interests, has called the attention of Professor Agassiz to a remarkable discovery made by him. He found in Mexico a cave containing some of the United States. He found in Mexico a cave containing
Starting point is 00:05:51 some 200 skeletons of men each above eight feet in height. The cave was evidently the barrier place of a race of giants who antedated the Aztecs. Mr. Klapp arranged the bones of one of these skeletons and found the total length to be eight feet 11 inches. The femur reached up to his thigh and the molars were big enough to crack a coconut. The head measured 18 inches, from front to back. So the key takeaways for me on this one are this minor discovers 200 skeletons in a Mexico cave. So this is not a mound.
Starting point is 00:06:33 This is a cave. And all of these 200 skeletons apparently measured eight feet or bigger or longer. One of the skeletons measured eight feet 11 inches long. They said its head measured 18 inches from front to back. and then its molars were big enough to crack a coconut. So the descriptions in this article are pretty amazing. And then the writer of this New York Times article mentions how the bones are believed to be from an ancient race that antedated the Aztecs. Okay, this next article was published by the New York Times on May 5, 1885.
Starting point is 00:07:17 The headline reads, Skeletons 7 feet long. The article reads as follows. Centroburg, Ohio, May 4th. Licking County has been for years a favorite field for students of Indian history. There, being here, two old forts and scores of mounds. Last week, a small mound near Homer was opened by some schoolboys, who found a skeleton.
Starting point is 00:07:45 Today, further search was made, and several feet below the surface of the earth, in a large vault, with stone floor and bark covering, were found four huge skeletons, three being each over seven feet in length, and the other eight. The skeletons lay with their feet to the east on a bed of charcoal in which were numerous partially burned bones. about the neck of the largest skeleton were a lot of stone beads, evidently a necklace in life. The grave contained about 80 stone vessels and implements, the most striking being a curiously wrought pipe. The bull having a series of carved figures upon it represented a contest between animals and birds. It is said to be the only engraved stone pipe ever found, a stone kettle holding about a gallon in which was a residue of saline matter bears evidence of much skill. Their bows, a number of arrows, stone hatchets, and a stone knife are among the implements.
Starting point is 00:08:56 The knife is of peculiar shape with a curved blade and a wooden handle. Students of Indian archaeology claim it is the most valuable find ever made in that line. So the interesting takeaways from this story is they find this, small mound in Ohio where there's a skeleton inside. But after further searching and activation, underneath it, several feet, it says, below the surface, they find a large vault. This is striking to me with a stone floor and four, quote, huge skeletons, three being each over seven feet and one eight footer. So interesting that you've got this mound with multiple chambers and below is this stone vault with these big skeletons and all of these artifacts with them. And I would love to
Starting point is 00:09:54 know what the saline residue was that was found in one of these bowls. Fascinating story. Okay, moving along, this next article was published July 14th, 1916 in the New York Times. The title of the article reads, Giants Bones in Mound. The subheading reads, Scientists on Earth Relics of Indians Who Lived 700 Years ago. And this article takes place somewhere in Pennsylvania.
Starting point is 00:10:21 The article reads, Binghampton, July 13th. Professor A.B. Skinner of the American Indian Museum, Professor W.K. Moorhead of Phillips and Dover Academy, and Dr. George Donahue, Pennsylvania State historian, who have been conducted. The restructing researches along the valley of the Susquehanna have uncovered an Indian mound at Tioga Point on the upper portion of Queen Esther's Flats on what is known as the Murray's Farm, a short distance from Sayre, Pennsylvania, which promises rich additions to Indian lore.
Starting point is 00:11:00 In the mound uncovered were found the bones of 68 men, which are believed to have been buried 700 years. years ago. The average height of these men was seven feet, while many were much taller. Further evidence of their gigantic size was found in large celtz or axes hewed from stone and buried in the grave. On some of the skulls, two inches above the perfectly formed forehead were protuberances of bone. Members of the expedition say it is the first discovery of its kind on record and a valuable contribution to the history of the early races. The skull and a few bones found in one grave were sent to the American Indian Museum. Wow. So in this 1960 New York Times report, we've got a story where 68 skeletons were discovered. in this Pennsylvania mound.
Starting point is 00:12:04 It says that all of them measured seven plus feet tall and many were larger. They were found with giant axes, but most striking is the detail it mentions that these things basically had horns on their foreheads or above their eyes. It says some of the skulls two inches above the perfectly formed forehead were these protuberances of bone. Very interesting. I would love to see one of these skulls, and I would love to get my hands on one of these giant axes. And I love how a lot of these old writers, they just write freely without fear of politics or political correctness like writers would write today. Where this guy's admitting, whoever wrote this, that this is a valuable contribution to the history of the early races. I can seriously read you articles like this just from the New York Times, from the old days, for hours, days, if not weeks.
Starting point is 00:13:07 There's so many of them. Even men of history like Abraham Lincoln, our 16th president, seems to have mentioned the giants of the old world and their connections to mounts. And he did this when he was visiting Niagara Falls one time. and he was writing in his journal recounting the beauty of Niagara Falls and he says all this stuff and then he comes to the punchline that I'm referring to here and he says quote then as now Niagara was roaring here the eyes of that species of extinct giants whose bones fill the mounds of America have gazed on Niagara as ours do now, end quote. Now, if you've followed me for any period of time,
Starting point is 00:13:57 you've probably heard me reference this infamous quote by Abraham Lincoln. But again, we're always getting new followers, new listeners, and watchers here to the program. So I don't ever want to assume everybody knows this kind of stuff. So maybe you've never heard that. That is a real quote from Abraham Lincoln that seems to be corroborating what the New York Times, what the Scientific American and all of these publications from the late 1700s to early 1900s were publishing all the time, sometimes front page news
Starting point is 00:14:33 in their publications of the discoveries of giant skeletons, often found in mounds, sometimes found in caves, sometimes found in creek beds. And so one of the million-dollar questions, is when we go back to our discussions about giants of old Genesis 6-4 that talks about the Nephilim. And of course we've got the book of Enoch, this ancient text, which goes in detail on the origins of the Nephalim, which were again like these hybrid giants, where they came from, how they descended originally on Mount Hermon and Israel. And so one of the million dollar questions is, in the old world, was there dispersion? globally where these hybrids dispersed across the sea to Easter Island, to Peru, to Egypt, and even to places like the Wild Wild West, right here in North America, in Wisconsin,
Starting point is 00:15:36 in Minnesota, in Colorado, and all these states where we just read about these strange discoveries. Well, I hope you enjoyed this episode. Hey, one last plug.
