Starting point is 00:00:01 Betches Media presents Ha ha laugh funny Mention It All A Bravo by Betches podcast We don't say that but now we said it With me, Dylan Hafer Who's going to check me both Hey everyone, welcome back to the
Starting point is 00:00:18 Mention at All podcast Our first Thursday episode Living in a post Real Housewives of Salt Lake City Season 5 world I feel a little lost I don't know what's going on But you know what we do have to talk about
Starting point is 00:00:33 a season premiere of Summerhouse. Thank you so much to whoever is, you know, behind the levers of Bravo scheduling. Because truly, like, the one thing or one of the only things that I feel like would feel adequate in the wake of Salt Lake City Season 5 is the Summer House season premiere. I got to talk to Kyle and Amanda in advance of the season premiere. That episode came out earlier this week. So if you haven't heard that one, go check. it out on the feed wherever you're listening. But we're going to get all into this premiere today.
Starting point is 00:01:08 I'm going to talk about Beverly Hills a little bit. Now, full disclosure, I am recording this a couple of days early. I'm jetting off on a little vacacion. I need to be not in the country right now. We've got Valentine's Day coming up. We've got President's Day coming up. And quite frankly, none of that feels like the vibe right now. So I'm getting out of Dodge. But luckily, I was able to watch the Summer House season premiere. I've actually watched it twice by now. So I feel like I've really absorbed it into my bones. And I did get to watch this week's Beverly Hills a little bit early. And let me tell you, I did shed a tear.
Starting point is 00:01:45 Beverly Hills has been such an interesting experience this season for me because I feel like week to week I have not been overly positive about it. But now I'm kind of sitting back in my seat a little bit. And I'm like, well, I think I'm having a good time. I've had a couple of great guests in the last couple weeks who have expressed their positive feelings about Beverly Hills this season, Evan Ross Katz, Sarah Galley, Friends of the Pod, one and all. And I feel like the last couple weeks of this show, I've just been like settling into this vibe of letting it be enjoyable. And I have really enjoyed the last couple weeks, Sutton's little mini triplet, trip dash lit, not like, triplets, but there's three of them. Sutton and Garcell and Kyle headed to Augusta, Georgia, to meet Sutton's mother, Reba. She is stressful to me. She makes a lot of sense, knowing what we
Starting point is 00:02:49 know about Sutton and seeing what we've seen of Sutton, these last handful of years on the show, seeing Reba and seeing Sutton and Reba and seeing kind of the world she grew up in, I'm like, oh, yes, some things are clicking into place. But the moment that Sutton and Reba were able to have with each other on this week's episode was really, I thought, quite moving. And it's moving in a way where Reba is obviously not somebody who wears her heart on her sleeve, shows a whole lot of emotion, shows a whole lot of affection. She's not nurturing, as she tells Kyle in the kitchen. When Kyle comes back from a run, And then she's like, you ran too late in the day.
Starting point is 00:03:31 You gotta do that at 5 a.m. Why are you wearing those things? Like, she's just, she's this like sourpuss old Southern lady who I don't think has ever said like a nice word about anything in her life. I mean, last week, I didn't get a chance to talk about this. Watching her open the scarf that Garcel had brought her as a present. And she literally looks like, one, she's never. seen a scarf before. Two, she's never opened a gift before. And three, like, she doesn't know any norms of human interaction. She's like, what's this? Oh. Okay. It's just funny because you would
Starting point is 00:04:17 expect, or you, I mean, maybe this is a stereotype, but like, you would expect an old southern woman from Augusta, Georgia, to have more of a, of an ethical, not ethical, not ethical etiquette standard of like, well, I thank you so much for that kindest gift. Bless your heart. Thank you so much for getting me that beautiful scoff. Like even if you don't like it, you would be like overly polite and, you know, etiquetteful. Yeah, Riba doesn't have that. But then watching this week, oh my God, I have always, ever since Sutton first shared how her father died, that has always kind of sat in the back of my mind as sort of this nagging thing that I have to imagine just impacts so much of how she moves through the
Starting point is 00:05:11 world. And, you know, we've seen some confusing behavior from her in the last few years. We've seen some strange choices. And I don't know, watching this episode. where she goes to the house that she lived in where her father took his own life. And they're standing in the room and she's looking at the couch and she's saying that she wishes the last time she had seen him, that she wasn't so selfish and she sat down and talked to him. It's just, it's heartbreaking. And I don't care if you like Sutton.
Starting point is 00:05:46 I don't care if you think that she is the most distasteful person who's ever been on this show. if you're commenting mean things about her on Instagram posts, whatever. If you watch that scene and you are not struck by the emotional weight and the emotional weight of something, this happened in 2002, 22 years they're filming this, things that she has not been able to deal with, not been able to unpack, and especially with her mother, things that have just never been on the table. This is the thing about this show. You can be as, you know, lukewarm on the season as you want, but a scene like that, I love
Starting point is 00:06:31 these little mini trips. We don't get enough of them on Housewives. I understand they're probably kind of like obnoxious for production. Like it's a lot of logistics for sometimes not that much reward. But in a situation like this, seeing Sutton kind of in her natural habitat, I think has been such a great addition to this season. and a great addition to Sutton's kind of career on Housewives because we've never gotten the curtain pulled back on her like this. It was nice.
Starting point is 00:07:01 I do think it was a little weird that Erica wasn't invited. She's a Georgia girl, too. I don't know. Okay, I'm not going to let myself slip into that Georgia accent again. I can't do it. I can't. I'm so sorry. Sometimes I can't help myself.

Starting point is 00:08:14 That's why you rack. Meanwhile in L.A., Doreen's fighting for her fucking life. She and P.K. finally had a good conversation. The fact that now two weeks in a row, Erica and Bose have been in the position of like coaching Doreet into understanding and realizing that P.K. can and will make her life a living hell in this separation impending divorce situation. I think Bose and Erica are really trying their best. I think that, I mean, I think that Dorete is trying her best too. And it's a tough situation to wrap your mind around the fact that your husband. of nine and a half years, notably not ten yet, is like most likely putting pieces into motion to screw you over. It's not a fun thing, but I respect how Bose and Erica are kind of giving Dorit the tough love she probably needs right now. I'm curious the way that this has developed because I don't think we've gotten a ton of updates in this department, and obviously
Starting point is 00:09:25 they were filming this more than six months ago. So I'm, I'm hopeful that Doreet hasn't had her, I'm hopeful that Doreet hasn't had her, like, you know, allowance or whatever ripped away from her. But I don't know, it does seem like when she said that 10-year thing and that their 10-year anniversary is six months away, girl, Molly, you in danger, girl. I really wish her the best. I wish Jaggy and Phoenix the best. Tough call. I'm, I next week does look very spicy. I feel like the last couple weeks of Beverly Hills because there's been this group separation. It's been a little bit of a palette cleanser from the Doreet and Kyle of it all and Texas Gate and just sort of like the temperature has come down a little bit and it's been nice to see a little bit of a different flavor.
Starting point is 00:10:22 Next week looks like it's going heat right back up. So I'm excited to see that. I'm a little nervous. but I'm excited to talk about it. Let's be real. Shall we get into Summerhouse? Now, like I said, I'm recording this episode a couple days before you're hearing it. So my deepest apologies, if something has happened in the last couple days, I don't know what something could happen, but I've heard tell, I've seen tell. Apparently Lindsay's no longer. following baby daddy Turner on Instagram, I don't know anything. But all I'm saying is that if there's an Instagram post or a statement to us weekly or a real or a TikTok or any kind of, you know, just indication in the next couple days that perhaps the hub cub is being, um,
Starting point is 00:11:28 mothered by a by a lone wolf. If that happens, it happened. I don't know if you guys have seen those rumors. Ready to soundtrack your summer? Off campus, L, every year after, The Love Hypothesis, Sterling Point, and more. Slow burns, second chances, chemistry you can. feel through the screen. Your next obsession is waiting. Watch only on Prime. Okay, the thing is like, I guess I don't want it to be true, but at the same time,
Starting point is 00:12:49 I feel like Lindsay is essentially acting like a single mother already. She comes into this house. We are not seeing Turner this season. We are finally allowed to say his name after Sierra literally goes, who's we? What a great moment. When she's like, oh, do you have a name picked on? She's like, we have some names we like. And she's literally who's we. I don't know who the fuck this guy is.
Starting point is 00:13:16 Lindsay has talked openly about how she and Turner have not started living together, how they are, you know, essentially keeping their relationship on a normal timeline, a normal track, just with a baby added in the mix. I don't know how realistic that really truly is. I think it's something that is probably worth trying. And I think especially given the, we'll just say condensed nature of the timeline of their relationship, I think it probably is cleaner to keep things a little bit separate. And then if something happens and perhaps hub cubs parents,
Starting point is 00:14:05 are no longer together, then it's just, we get to the house. West and Jesse are the first to the house. And this is, I think, important because we're really setting up West and Jesse as, like, main characters of this show, like true central cast members. Last season, they were brand new. This season, they are, like, kind of the main guys in the house. because you think about it, it's like, okay, there's a new guy who we don't meet in the premiere. We have Carl showing up in the last five minutes hyperventilating in the parking lot.
Starting point is 00:14:42 It doesn't seem like he's necessarily in the best place. And we have Kyle who is making a valiant effort this season to be a respectful husband, you know, just a few years into the marriage game. He's finally coming home at 201 a.m. instead of 223 a.m. and you know what, good for him. But it makes sense to position West and Jesse as kind of like the main guys in the group, the number one and the numbers one and two guy in the group. And of course they are single, and this is important because Jesse has his sights set,
Starting point is 00:15:21 really before she even enters the house, but pretty singularly he has a sight set on one Ms. Lexi Wood. Lexi makes a strong entrance in this first episode. She brings a friend Bailey with her, who is officially a friend of this season. At first, I think when I watched this episode a couple weeks ago before I spoke to Kyle and Amanda, and I think they hadn't like added her to the cast or something. So I was like, did she just get a plus one for the first weekend? Like, who is this girl? Bailey's on the show.
Starting point is 00:15:57 cool, but Lexi is really, she's the one that we're being positioned to care about. And she tells us that she started modeling when she was like 12 years old and then she moved to Paris and she did school online and now she's 26 and she's from Toronto and she's living in New York and yada, yada, yada. And none of that really matters because what matters is that Jesse sees her and basically does the like cartoon googly eyes like boi-yo-yo-yo-yo-yoing. thing. Like, he is locked in. And this, the way that this like unfolds throughout the episode is amusing, but also like a little bit alarming. Because he is just like so outwardly obsessed with her right off the bat that immediately you know, like nothing good can come from this.
Starting point is 00:16:53 From a, a straight dude on Summerhouse, minutes into the season, like, I think I love that girl. Kind of feels like what we saw last season with West and Sierra, where he was like, fucking obsessed with her just enough to not want to be exclusively dating her. Right? Like, that's kind of the M.O. here. And, you know, the first episode, Jesse is, you know, saying he misses her and saying she's the love of his life and all of this.
Starting point is 00:17:22 And of course, he's being like, he's being silly. He's being a little cheeky about it. But also it's like feelings are running high. You're stuck in this house together. There's no such thing as something casual when you're stuck there every week living in the house together. And so this first episode, I mean, it's fun to have a little flirtatious dynamic in the house. And seeing them sit at this first dinner where they literally look like they're on a date while everybody else is like talking amongst themselves. It's a funny visual, but I'm like, if this entire season is going to be on and off of them being so in love with each other and then him screwing around or not being able to give her what she wants, I just don't want to do it again.
Starting point is 00:18:14 So, Jesse, I would say cool it just a little bit. Maybe like take a cold shower. We can all see like the boner in your gym shorts. When he says, you guys, when she says her last name is Wood, and he asks what her middle name is, and she's like, Diane, he goes, oh, I thought it might be gives me. Oh, my God. Gives me? Lexi gives me wood.
Starting point is 00:18:48 Grow the fuck up. You're like, what, 31, 32. row the fuck up. Ugh. I really don't have anything against Jesse. This is not like an anti-Jessie sentiment. It's an anti-whatever the fuck this is, because it's gross. And then he decides that she's ditsy.
Starting point is 00:19:13 And look, they've had about 10 minutes of quality time with one another. He's like, yeah, I get like a ditsy vibe from her. And then at dinner. to her face. Would you describe yourself as ditsy? And then she does, it hurts my heart. Because she's like, no. And then she like says that she's offended,
Starting point is 00:19:41 but then she says that she like basically gets turned on by proving people wrong. And so she's going to prove to him that she's not just a pretty face. And it's like, okay, but like you're still going to get. with him. Like, if a guy calls you dumb and then you're like, I'm going to prove you wrong, but then you prove him wrong and then make out with him. Like, he doesn't really probably learn the lesson that it was a bad thing to call you stupid, to underestimate you. I don't want to tell Lexie Wood how to live her life. She seems like she's doing fine. She's on Summerhouse.
Starting point is 00:20:21 She has like a million Instagram followers. Where do these people come from? I don't know. But, man, the Lexi and Jesse stuff, it's the first episode, and it's a lot. It's a lot. But I've been talked about, we have like 55 other things to get to. I mean, West and Sierra, I forget sometimes watching Summerhouse because it takes them a while to turn this show around. Like, they're filming in July right now.
Starting point is 00:20:52 They were filming traitors in June. and the Summerhouse Reunion of last season didn't finish airing until the first half of June. So the actual timeline on this, they probably filmed the Summer House reunion April, April, May, and then this is like the first weekend of July. So things are on a pretty tight turnaround, watching the way that Sierra was obviously really upset with the whole West situation at the reunion, and then knowing that this is happening, let's say generously three months later,
Starting point is 00:21:32 but probably less than that. And that in the meantime, Sierra has gone to Scotland for a few weeks to film Traders and then come home to an article in the New York Times of West talking about their relationship. And she feels saying things to the New York Times about their relationship that he never even said to her, her about how they couldn't give each other what they wanted and all of this. And that if you can give
Starting point is 00:21:58 the New York Times more clarity on the breakdown of your relationship than you can give to the person that you're in the relationship with, that doesn't feel great. And I think that West, and I feel like I said this after last season's reunion, I think that the way he handled their situation was unfortunate. I don't think that this situation itself, was so intense and problematic that he needs to be like public enemy number one on this show. But I don't mind his balls getting raked over the colds a little bit. And Sierra giving him the cold shoulder when she walks into the kitchen, as she should. He, I think, and this is something, this feels like a tendency.
Starting point is 00:22:47 Like he thinks that this is going to be like a chill thing. They're going to kind of laugh it off and be fine. and for Sierra you can tell that there is still a hurt there. It's not necessarily like she, you know, never wants to speak to him again or she thinks he's evil. The wounds haven't fully scabbed over yet. And in the confessional moment when the producer asks her after the reunion, was there any part of her that felt like there might be another shot for her and West.
Starting point is 00:23:24 And she says that she doesn't want to answer the question. And she's like, I, and they're like, so that means yes. And she's like, I just am not going to like open myself up to get flamed like that. Which I respect. I mean, we all got it there. We all picked up what she was putting down. But yeah, I mean, I think West left the reunion being like, yeah, I got to patch things up with the girl. But like, you know, I'm single.
Starting point is 00:23:52 It's all good. And for Sierra, she's not quite in that place yet. And then we have Lindsay and Carl. And, you know, I think I was a little skeptical of how this was going to go. And it makes so much sense to me when Paige and Sierra are talking about this. And Paige is like, I think that Lindsay is kind of going to act like nothing happened with Carl and feel like they can just go back to the friendship dynamic that they had two years ago, three years ago. And I don't know that that's fully true because at the end of the day, like, Lindsay was the one who got broken up with.
Starting point is 00:24:37 So I don't think that she's going to just be like, oh, we're all good. Nothing happened. What I do think is more likely to happen is that Lindsay will act like she's all good. what could possibly be weird about this? I'm happy. I'm pregnant. I'm living my life. And I'm just trying to have a good summer. And any weirdness or, you know, tough emotions that Carl is feeling, I have a feeling that's going to be treated. Like, why are you making this weird? Why are you being so emotional? Just act normal. This is fine. You broke up with me. Why do you get to have feelings about this? And I think that we're seeing already in the premiere, in those few minutes of Carl arriving at the house, he is not quite sure how this is going to go. And I think that Lindsay, because she's sort of in her, to borrow a phrase from Real Houseways of New Jersey, may it rest in peace or come back or whatever is happening there, Lindsay's in the love bubble. And I don't know that she's in the love bubble with Turner. She's in the love bubble with where she is in life.
Starting point is 00:25:53 She's in the love bubble with becoming a mom, with having a baby, with being pregnant. And she might be in there alone, but the bubble is still there. Carl is in a bubble of mess. A bubble of not knowing what to do with himself. A bundle of nerves, if you will. Because before he even comes in the house, this is the, you know, the netherly. next morning, people are hanging out at the pool. Lindsay has unveiled her baby bump in a bikini and it's bumping and I don't know how, you know, she looks good, whatever. Carl shows up to the house
Starting point is 00:26:30 and he's, before he even walks in, he's not laid eyes on Lindsay. And he's spiraling to the producers in the parking lot, being coached into going into the house. And then he walks in, he sees Lexi and Jesse in the kitchen. He's saying hi. And then he's like, yeah, I need another minute. he goes into the bathroom. Meanwhile, he's in the bathroom, and we get a close-up shot of Lindsay's blown-up framed sonogram sitting on the mantle in the living room. The juxtaposition of these things could not be more stark. Like, Lindsay's pregnancy is drenching the house in this motherly love and this, like,
Starting point is 00:27:15 sunshiny new phase of life, and Carl is hiding in the bathroom. He is like physically not ready to handle to face this situation. And it's a, that's a tough place to be in. I know, I mean, it's dramatic. They cut it off at the end. But I'm a little apprehensive watching those last few minutes of this episode. What is the dynamic going to be? for the majority of the season. Because I think it's totally fine and, you know, kind of necessary to have this first kind of confrontation makes it sound so bad. But like the first moment of them being stuck together for the summer.
Starting point is 00:28:05 But I don't want to watch Carl spiraling for 12 episodes about not being married and Lindsay having a baby and moving on. because we can talk all we want about Lindsay's timeline. And Sierra, you know, she's breaking it down. So they broke up in September. The wedding was supposed to be in November. She, um, Turner reached out to her in December.
Starting point is 00:28:33 Uh, she like got back to him in January. Now it's July and she's four and a half months pregnant, she says. That's a lot. And obviously I think Carl has kind of taken the opposite approach to this new phase of life and he seems to have sort of slowed it down and really taken his time. We see him say that he hasn't been, let's say, intimate with anyone in several months. That's fine.
Starting point is 00:29:04 But it's different. Lindsay's, we know Lindsay's been intimate with somebody. She's having a baby. So I just am hoping, I'm hopeful for this season that we will have like, the necessary number of awkward, uncomfortable Lindsay and Carl moments, but I don't want that to be the elephant in the room the whole season. Because when it comes down to reality TV, we all know that there are certain situations and, you know, arrangements and things that would not be happening if this weren't for a show. Point blank, Lindsay and
Starting point is 00:29:45 Carl would not be living in the same house for the summer if they were not both cast members on this show who want to keep their jobs. But at the same time, like, we have to be able to suspend our disbelief up until a point. And so I don't want to watch them be miserable together. I want to watch them live their lives. So we'll see. I don't want to jump to conclusions because we, again, literally have not even seen Carl interact with Lindsay yet. Also, the way Lizzie is, also the way Lindsay announces her pregnancy to the house. Only Lindsay Hubbard. The pregnancy announcement starting with
Starting point is 00:30:23 eight years ago, I had a boyfriend who slept in a bed with four girls and gaslighted me into thinking he wasn't cheating. Seven years ago. It's like, oh my God. The lynziest thing to ever Lindsay. I was looking up the photo of her timeline from a few years ago when she was dating Stephen. Stephen?
Starting point is 00:30:43 Is that his name? Stephen. Like, yeah. The boyfriends all blend together. You know the timeline. Lindsay turns 36. Pregnant. Lindsay is always going to be Lindsay. And if you don't love her, I'm sorry. It's nine seasons into this show. She is who she is. And I respect that. Oh, God, it's funny. I also, it's so interesting to know that we're going to see, like, another version of Page and Craig's relationship this season. because it's been very interesting to watch on Southern Charm this year, kind of them together and also Craig's way of moving through life. And Paige is talking about it in this premiere.
Starting point is 00:31:27 She says, you know, when I was, you know, younger in my 20s, I had these rose-colored glasses on. I thought I was going to, you know, want a kid, a marriage, or whatever. We see the flashback of her telling Lindsay that she wants to have a baby by the time she's 30. And she's like, yeah, you know, I used to go into tanning bed too. We learn, we grow up and we learn things. And, you know, Paige is saying that at a time when she and Craig were still together. And now they're not.
Starting point is 00:31:57 And so it feels like already just in this first episode and watching Southern Charmed this season too, like the writing has been on the wall for a bit. So I'm, I'm kind of, I don't want to say this in a mean way. I'm ready to be at the chapter of these shows where we don't have to watch this relationship anymore. Because it's like, it's kind of like when you're reading a book and there's like a mystery going on or, you know, whatever. And the climax or like the reveal happens and there's still like a hundred pages left.
Starting point is 00:32:36 And you're like, okay, like, I'm not going to say that I don't care at all, you know, like what's what these characters are eating for breakfast tomorrow. But I did care more when I still didn't know if they were going to live or die. So now that the, now that the twist has been revealed, it kind of feels like we're just watching this play out in slow motion a little bit. But such is the nature of a cross, a cross show relationship. This is what made it so impactful in the first place and this is how it's going to go out and we are going to follow it to the bitter end, knowing that cameras did in fact pick up for both of them. Yehaw, we're going to be riding this train until, I would say,
Starting point is 00:33:21 at least May. So strap in and enjoy the ride and thanks for listening. And make sure you rate, review and subscribe, follow, whatever, follow the show wherever you listen. I hope everyone has a great holiday weekend, whether the holiday you're celebrating is Valentine's Day or President's Day or both or neither. Enjoy yourselves. We'll be back Wednesday of next week.
