A Bravo by Betches podcast
We don't say that
But now we said it
With me, Dylan Hafer
We're going to check me both
Hey everyone

I'm Dylan Hafer
And as we continue this season
Of Salt Lake City
I have been more and more excited
To talk to our brand new
Housewife this season
And now she is in the studio
Please welcome Monica Garcia
Hello
Hi, hi, how are you?
I am so good. How are you?
I am honestly tripping that I'm sitting here with you right now.
Quite honestly.
I told you you're in the hot seat.
We've had quite a few of your fellow housewives into the studio this year.
And it's really heating up.
It's, we're seven episodes into the season and things have not let up.
Not gotten chill.
No.
So how?
So you're, you know, almost two months-ish into this housewives.
experience? Yeah. How is it going for you? It's surreal. Like honestly, it's completely surreal. I keep saying
if I had to describe it in one word, I would say a whirlwind. It's kind of like being shot out of a
cannon and you're just kind of boom immediately into this completely different dimension of life.
And you're, I mean, on the show this season, you're brand new. We haven't, you know, met you in the context of
the show in the past. But obviously you have some.
experience with various cast members.
How was your kind of experience of the show prior to this season, obviously working
with Jen, knowing Angie and Lisa a little bit at least, what was it kind of like in your mind
before you knew that you were going to be on it?
Like how was the show before I was in my mind?
Were you like around when production was happening ever?
Like what was, how did you kind of experience the show just existing?
Yeah.
That's a good question.
So I was never around Jen when she filmed.
I actually, when I first met her, I didn't even know about the show.
It hadn't been even launched yet.
And so I was never around her with filming.
But I was around when she did press and watch what happens lives and things like that.
And I did see her relationships with the other women.
And do you feel like, so obviously over the course of a few years, a lot was happening both on camera and off.
Do you feel like you kind of watched those relationships change and things like that?
And then like how did that work for you once you came onto the show?
It definitely, it was very interesting, honestly, to see the behind the scenes of Jen's relationship with some of the other women versus now I'm experiencing it for myself.
but I definitely went into it with some previous knowledge of things.
I feel like that can be a little bit of a double-edged sword because it's, I mean, it's great to have
context and to kind of know who you're going to be dealing with.
But also, it's like it's your job to get to know these women and to form your own relationships
with them.
Were there any people that really surprised you as you got to know them more this season?
Yeah.
And I totally agree with you, by the way.
It was a complete double-edged sword.
made sure, and I think I stated this, to go in like, I need to make my own assumptions,
not based off of Jen's experience. But Meredith completely blew me away. She was the most
incredible surprise. She was amazing to me the entire time. She is truly a very, very kind
soul. And Whitney, I had the most fun with. I feel like she was also very welcoming to me.
Yeah, I mean, based on what you said in the premiere, I think it's like you hadn't necessarily
heard, you know, glowing reviews of any of these women.
So you kind of have to just like shake that off a little bit.
Yep.
A hundred percent.
I definitely went into it like, you know, kind of how you do with any friendship circle.
You know, not everybody's relationship is always jiving all the time, but it shouldn't
affect your relationship with them.
You know, you kind of have your own relationships outside of that.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And I mean, coming into this season, definitely.
as a viewer, there were a lot of questions about, like, you know, a lot has gone down in the last
couple seasons. Like, what is the energy going to be? How do we sort of reset? And I feel like this
season so far, your presence is a big part of that kind of vibe shift. And it does feel like
we're watching you kind of uncover, you know, the different layers of the group that maybe
we've already seen them from one way. And now we're seeing it a different way. Yeah. It's actually been
really cool to see kind of everyone kind of come out of their own this season. I feel like so many
people were like, no, Jen, no show. You know, and there was like this big worry. You know, how are the
fans going to, you know, perceive the new season without Jen? Because she was a ginormous personality
on the show. And I think it's been amazing to see everyone kind of evolve and kind of step up and make
the season what it is. So you, it seems like you had the most existing, really,
with Angie coming into this season.
Would you say that's fair?
Sure.
And how, like, did you foresee that there were going to be bumps in the road with that?
Because, you know, looking back at what we've seen so far, you know, Palm Springs is only three, four episodes into the season.
And it seems like you picked up on some red flags pretty quickly.
Yeah.
I think, I think it's no secret what Angie, you know, has been publicly saying about.
you know, our relationship and friendship.
We were not super, super close.
We definitely met each other more than once, I will say that.
Yeah, there's some creative storytelling about who knows how much.
Yep, it's so funny.
But, you know, photos don't lie.
So there's that.
But, yeah, I think she is just, she kind of threw me for a loop.
I'll be honest.
Yeah.
When I came on, I did not foresee a.
having any issues at all. I think we genuinely came from a place of like, yeah, let's build this
friendship. You know, we obviously have very common situations with Jen and our past. And, you know,
we met through that and we bonded over that. And it was this kind of clean slate for let's see
where this goes. And, you know, it didn't go very well. When you talk about feeling like shot out
of a canon. I feel like that Palm Springs trip is, couldn't describe it any other way.
Like, I have to imagine that it was just kind of wild to be amidst all that chaos.
It was so intense. I just remember there was a scene that we filmed at the hotel where I had
my discussion with Angie about, you know, she felt like I didn't have her back. I had Meredithus
after the dinner. Yeah. The infamous, the Moira Rose dinner. And. And,
And I literally almost got up in the middle of us filming to like go throw up.
Like I was so nauseous.
I was so tired.
I was away from my kids really for the first time consecutively like that.
Yeah.
And it was so overwhelming.
It is.
It really is like being shot out of a canon.
Well, and I think, I mean, any housewives trip, I feel like you could have a degree of that where it's like, okay, this is, you know, a lot of close quarters and time together.
and there's stuff going on.
But like that trip especially,
it just felt like there was so much,
you know,
just weird energy among various people.
And the whole thing with Angie not being invited by Meredith
and then showing up on the trip.
Like it got really serious really quickly.
It felt like and,
you know,
like the second we got off the plane.
Yeah.
It was like,
wow,
here we go.
It's like you're on,
somebody puts you on a surfboard for the first time and you're like,
okay,
how do I not like end up in the water?
Every single one of us ended up in the water.
Yeah, at some point.
I mean, it was like a complete cluster.
Yeah.
It was insane.
But it was also so much fun.
Like, honestly, meeting Trixie, I can't even, I, I legit cried.
Like, I cried because it felt so, like, out of body.
Like, what is life right now?
Like, I'm at the Trixie Motel freaking meeting Trixie, doing
a drag competition.
Like it was just like, am I dreaming?
Like pinch me.
It was so chaotic and crazy, but it was so beautiful all at the same time.
It was just insane.
Yeah.
And I think it seemed like you also were learning, you know, these people that you're
getting to know, you're learning a lot about them in those few days.
And it sounds like, based on what you said about Meredith, that you learned a lot
about her in a positive way.
A hundred percent.
Yeah.
I mean, they say, you know, you really get to know someone when you travel with them.
that's what happened.
Every relationship got tested when we traveled with each other.
But Meredith, I really did feel like she caught a lot on that trip.
She genuinely did not want Angie there.
I know a lot of people have assumptions about filming.
That was real.
That was a real feeling.
She did not want her there.
She did not know she was going to be there.
So, you know, Meredith, I felt like handled it very well.
Angie kept coming for her, in my opinion.
And it was just like, girl, you're on a trip that you're not.
not supposed to be on coming for the host.
You know, what's happening.
We'll talk more about Angie, but it does feel like there's, there is kind of this
persistent energy of like, I'm going to, I need to say what I want to say to you,
even if you don't want to hear it.
So like, I mean, Meredith physically, physically leaving the room or leaving the table.
And it's like, what are you realistically hoping to accomplish by then, you know, chasing after
someone?
Yeah.
And still saying it to them.
Nothing.
I don't think.
I don't think you're going to accomplish it.
anything at that point. You know what I mean? I think Meredith made it very clear she was not receptive.
You know. Yeah. And I mean, Meredith, like, say what you will about lots of things about Meredith,
but like she, you know how she feels about things. Like she and she is going to stick with her convictions.
And it's like, she doesn't want to talk about it. Yeah. She's not going to talk about it.
But at the same time, I do feel like Meredith is very logical and very even kill that if I feel like if
it was a different situation, she would have been more receptive.
You know, but it was just like, hi, I'm here and you're going to listen to the shit I have
to say about you.
And the word of the day is fake.
Yeah.
Yeah.
You know, and all tricks, no trust.
You know, it was just like little things that I think Meredith was like, come on, you don't
really want to make up.
It's not like a, it didn't feel like a good faith effort.
Right.
To actually make progress.
Right.
Yes.
To actually be like, I'm here to fix this.
So good.
So good.

It's time for a little in-person spring treat.
It's time for a trip to Ross.
Work your magic.
It was so refreshing to see how honest you were leading up to that trip
about your position within the group and how you feel kind of entering into this world with money and
logos and brands and all that stuff.
What was the response for you like after that conversation?
Because I personally saw so many people relating to you and really reacting positively to you speaking about that.
Thank you for that.
Thank you for saying that because I feel like it has been a complete split.
like 50% are like get her off the show. She's too poor. She's too broke, which is funny because
I'm not broke. Like literally no broke person could actually do the show genuinely. But I am
broke compared to these women. Like I know where I'm at and I'm standing in that. My life is
completely starting over. And I feel like the bag kind of got a little bit twisted. Like it wasn't
about having to buy the bag. It was about feeling accepted. Yeah. And I think it got twisted into
this whole, she's too poor to buy a bag when really it's like every single one of us has felt
unwelcome or not good enough or we don't fit in or, you know, the struggle of feeling like
we want to fit in. And I think that was mainly my struggle. I'm going on this trip with these
women I'm getting to know. And I do. I felt out of place.
I don't have a husband.
I'm going through a divorce.
You know, I am completely starting from the ground up all over.
And it was just about that emotional journey, which I think every single person has felt.
I think that's the thing.
One thing that I love about housewives and how many different situations and types of people we see on these shows is that so many of these situations, even if you can't say that like, oh, I've been on a reality show and been on this insane group trip.
It's like you can relate to that feeling in some way.
And I felt like the way that you were talking about it was very simple in that it's like, you know, X, Y, Z, I don't have all of the same things that some of these women do.
And it's not the same as like, you know, it's not like we're looking at a bank account and it's like zero zero zero.
It's like it's a, it's relative.
Yes, exactly.
And I feel like, you know, people feel that sometimes in junior high.
They feel that in high school.
Right.
Like you want the the sneakers that.
Other kids have, it's like, it's the same.
I think that is so relatable.
And it's, it's funny.
Because I mean, I see this too where people are like, I don't want to watch like, you know,
broke housewives.
And it's like, I know.
I'm like.
But that's a part of life.
Like feeling that way, even if it's not like, you know, I'm going to be on the street.
It's like that's how life works.
And I feel like that's kind of where housewives started.
I feel like it has evolved over time.
But I'm like, let's not pretend like we didn't see nini leaks, the queen of house.
wives, right, in tunics and leggings.
Yeah.
Like at a reunion.
I think that's something that's really interesting too is like the line has moved so much in the last 15 years that it's like the, you know, flying the glam to the group trip.
Yeah.
Didn't wasn't always a thing.
Like, you know, we saw the reunions.
They were wearing, you know, cocktail dresses and, you know, maybe got a blow out.
Like it's.
No, for real.
And I'm like, do we not remember like, you know, where this all started?
And, you know, that's interesting.
I will have to say just a little bit of tea for you.
So we all had glam in palm space.
Okay.
But only one of us to cry about it and talked about it.
Like I flew glam out, Whitney flew glam out,
Angie flew glam out.
But no one knows that.
Yeah.
Right.
That was my prickly.
That was my point.
Right.
That it's like it's obviously everybody's feelings are their own feelings,
but it's like the actual.
the like type line of events is
Yes and I'm so excited for reunion
I think is going to be an absolute
I love that you're
excited for reunion because I will tell you
I talk to a lot of people on a lot of Bravo shows
and some people fucking hate the reunion
and some people dread it every year
Yeah I cannot wait
I'm like every week I'm like
Is it time yet?
You're like taking the notes
Yeah, I just am so ready to just, I think people get this too from the show. I wear my heart on my sleeve. My emotions are on my face. It's so hard for me to have no resolve. So I'm just so excited to be able to have some of that. Yeah. Yeah. Speaking of, you know, I guess emotions. It's all about emotions. Your relationship with your mom is a really tricky thing, clearly. And we've seen quite a bit of it on the show so far. And I personally have found it.
it really fascinating and, you know, emotional and clearly it's something that is like actively
complicated for, for you. I'm curious, going into filming this season, you know, for the first time
putting everything out there, did you know that this was going to be such a big part of your
story on the show? Or was it something that kind of happened on accident a little bit?
You know, when I initially spoke to them about my mother, I made it very clear what our relationship was.
This is 100% real.
This has been our relationship pattern from the beginning.
It's high highs, low lows.
And I figured they would see some of that.
I did not expect it to be.
as bad as it is, as quickly as it happened, if that makes sense.
Yeah.
Like it went really bad, really fast.
Well, I think, I mean, on last week's episode, I guess, when you were with your
grandmother and, you know, I love seeing the three of you together.
Like, I thought that was a really fun dynamic because, you know, we don't always get to
see four generations of the same family.
I certainly did not foresee that, you know, going to the senior center and, you know,
out playing bingo or whatever it was was going to go to that point. Yeah. And so I imagine for you,
you know, obviously, you didn't get up coming next week on Monica's life. Like it's been, it's honestly,
it's really sad. Like it really is sad because if you're if and everyone knows this, people that are
actually like in my life, close friends, family, whatever. I mean, that is 100% real. Like my mother and I
truly have such a shit relationship.
It really is really sad.
It's honestly very sad.
And it's my mother's sister won't even talk to her.
You know, this is just, we have a very screwed up family dynamic, unfortunately.
But I think a lot of people can relate to that.
Have you ever talked to Whitney about her dad?
Because your relationship with your mom reminds me a little bit of that.
Yeah.
So Whitney actually was amazing with me on that. And you'll see that later on in
this season. Yeah. I think, I mean, so many people in their lives have complicated relationships
with a parent or a family member. And I think, you know, you can tell that it's real because
it is unfortunately something that I think a lot of people can relate to. Yeah. It's crazy
because you always kind of wonder how your life would look like like on camera. Right. And then
to actually see it.
Right.
Shit, that was worse than I thought.
Well, and it's like, you know, when you, when you picture it, like, maybe you're like,
oh, like, I would go shopping and I would like be with my friends.
And it's like, oh, no, it's going to be like the real shit.
Yeah.
Yeah.
My mom was like, we'll just be like cooking and like having family dinner.
And then we get on there and it's like, beep, beep, beep, beep, you know.
It was a mess.
We'll go on Easter brunch.
What could go wrong?
Yeah.
Yeah.

So backing up a little bit before we get to the brunch,
this rumor that's happening with Angie.
Yes.
So the timeline on the show that we have seen is a little bit convoluted because the whole thing is that theoretically Meredith was talking about this.
But the way that it comes to us is that Whitney is talking about Meredith talking about it.
And then she tells you and then you, you know, bring it back to Angie.
Walk me through kind of, I guess at Lisa's Opresky event.
Like, how was that for you?
Okay.
So I love that I get to clear this up.
Yes.
Truly, because this has been such a crazy situation that, like, I haven't really had the
opportunity to speak on yet.
Yeah.
Speak on it.
Speak on it.
Yeah.
I, Meredith did not tell me the rumor.
Right.
I feel like I need, let me say it again.
Meredith did not tell me the rumor.
I did not.
I did not hear it from Meredith.
I had heard this from several other.
people, friends included.
And Meredith and I did discuss it, as did Whitney and I, as did several.
I mean, that's the thing.
That's what I was trying to say to Angie.
Like, people are talking about it.
Right.
Everybody knows about this.
Like, it's not a secret.
I mean, when Angie and Sean had their conversation on last week's episode, it was clear
that this was not breaking news to either of them that it existed in the world.
It was like, now we have to talk about it here.
Mm-hmm.
I feel like,
Meredith. This is what genuinely, as someone on the inside, maybe this wasn't, the difference is
that apparently Meredith was threatening to use it, right? That is apparently what Lisa had said,
what Whitney had said, like Meredith said she has stuff on you that she, you know, it made it look
like they were saying Meredith was going, like threatening her. So then do you feel like you sort of got
stuck holding the bag a little bit with Angie because now she feels like Monica's the one who,
you know, made me talk about this.
Yeah.
I have so many thoughts.
I mean, we saw more of it at the Easter brunch that clearly Angie has strong feelings.
Yeah.
This is how I feel.
Okay.
Genuinely, how I am in life, if I heard something about you and you're my friend,
I really am going to tell you.
Right.
Like, did you hear what they're saying about you?
You know what I mean?
And I would expect you to tell me, like, girl, this is what I heard.
Right.
This is what people are saying about your kids or your marriage or whatever.
That's normal.
That's something I would genuinely do as a friend, especially when it's like in our friend group.
Right.
Like, this is happening in front of your face under your nose.
Like, I'm just telling you.
Yeah, it was strange at the brunch to see Angie be like, I wish you would have taken me aside and told me.
And you were like, I took you aside and told you.
I literally took you aside and told you.
Yeah, no, it was so, it's hard for me because I know that Angie and I are building this friendship
and maybe she doesn't know that's really how I am.
So maybe she felt like it was malicious.
But that is something I would, I would 100% tell my friend, especially we're all talking about it.
You should know what everyone's talking about.
Right.
If you're a group of six or seven people and five people are talking about something, let's just, let's close the loop.
Yeah, exactly.
I just kind of feel like maybe she just, I kind of feel like maybe she and Lisa just want to have a problem with me at that point.
Because it just felt like I was just sitting there enjoying my food in the moment.
And she's like, let's go have this talk.
It's like, why?
You know, like I don't want to keep having this talk.
I told you what's being said.
It's that simple.
It is what it looks like.
I'm just telling you what's being said.
Well, and I think it's interesting to put it in the context of, in theory, Lisa and Anne,
were the ones that you would have had the best chance of being friends with in the group,
but then maybe the way things have worked out,
Meredith is seeming like more your cup of tea or like somebody that you want to be closer with.
So then it's like, yeah, maybe then we don't want Monica to be like.
Yeah.
I don't know.
Just a thought.
Just a good thought.
Yeah, a pretty good thought.
No, Meredith and Whitney were amazing.
Like, honestly, I have nothing bad to say about them.
I really don't.
They can hate me or love me.
That's fine.
You know, I can't speak on anyone else's behalf.
But for me, from start to finish, you know, they were great.
They really were.
Whitney, low-key, have a girl crush on her.
Like, you'll see later in the season.
I feel like you guys have similar energies a little bit.
Yeah.
I think that we're, you know, she had her own past and I had mine and our paths are kind of similar.
And we're very close in age.
We have similar crazy stories with the church.
You know, we do.
We have a lot of similarities together.
Yeah.
I think that's cool, though, that you can come on to the show and not necessarily already have chosen out.
Like, okay, like, I think these two people are going to be my friends.
It's like, no, you found the people that it seems like you vibe with.
Like, 100% organically, too.
Like, I went into it completely different thoughts.
I will say Whitney was.
the first to reach out to me in the beginning. And she, yeah, she was awesome. Yeah. I got to say,
it seems like maybe you're not vibing so much with Mary Cosby. What? Or maybe Mary Cosby is,
the vibe is there and she just is, uh, I think in my head, we are good. She's hanging up the phone
off. We are vibing. No, she's actually great. She honestly, I, I know so many people have such
strong feelings about her, but she's, she never was mean to me or anything.
I know that people are like, well, she shamed you for eating.
I think it's more that people feel like she's not giving you anything and that it feels
like you want to, it feels like you, you want to be friends with her and that she maybe just
doesn't want to be friends with much of anybody.
I don't know.
Yeah.
You know what it is is I think I kind of relate to her as feeling like,
an outsider in the group.
Okay.
I think that's what it is, that I just kind of feel like, it's hard.
It's hard to be the new girl.
Yeah.
It is hard to be the new girl.
Well, and I think especially, I mean, Mary obviously has a different history with the group.
So that's its own thing.
But like Meredith, Lisa, Heather Whitney are, they've been there since the beginning,
since before the beginning, you know, like there is a sense that you and even Angie,
who was on a little bit last season, like it's, you know.
You got to find your way to something with the four of them.
And it's not always easy.
I also think that Mary kind of reminds me of like my family members.
Okay.
Like Portuguese women are kind of very similar to like her bluntness.
Like if you go to the house, it'll be like, you're not eating enough or you're too skinny or stop eating or whatever.
You know what I mean?
It's just kind of like, you know, they're very much in your business.
And they're very out with it and open with it.
and Mary's kind of like that.
So for me, it doesn't catch me off guard as much.
Yeah.
I do.
I have enjoyed seeing the dynamic.
I mean,
not enjoyed all of it with your mom,
but like the family dynamic in the culture that it feels like we're really seeing like a sort of a unique side of things there.
Very unique.
Yeah.
That's a very nice way of putting it.
So as we go forward to the rest of this season,
we saw the mid-season trailer this week, which looks like a doozy.
You said you're excited for reunion.
How are you feeling from now until then about the rest of the season for you?
It's a loaded question, I guess.
I know.
The sigh says it all, right?
It's going to be intense.
Like, honestly, it really is.
It doesn't, it's like what I watched this last episode, right?
And I bawled my ads out.
Every time I watch it, I ball my eyes out.
It's very painful for me.
and that continues.
Is your mom watching the show?
I was curious if you've talked to her at all about it.
Okay.
Yeah.
It's not good.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's tough.
Well, I hope that at some point maybe if it's not right now,
that this experience could help in some way or maybe, you know, break down something.
I don't, I mean, it's not easy to tie in a buck.
But like, it's crazy because the senior center scene, she was so mad at me for.
Like she was like, I was set up.
And I'm like, set up.
You were there.
Right.
What do you mean set up?
Like you said what you said.
I said what I said.
We knew, you know, she just, it's still all my fault.
Yeah.
It's crazy.
So, yeah.
I do think it's, it's cool to see you as a mom and as a single mom.
with all these kids that you feel like you have an opportunity to really get it right.
I think that's...
It's so important to me, honestly, and I'm far from perfect, right?
But it is important to me that I don't ever have the kind of relationship that I had with my mom,
which truthfully, if I'm being completely honest, I think the biggest issue, what is wrong
in our relationship is it's not like a mother and daughter.
It's like sisters.
Yeah.
And I genuinely feel like that is the problem.
I think just the fact that you can be aware of that and can point that out probably means that you're already on the right track.
Yeah.
Thank you.
I mean, self-awareness is good.
Self-awareness is good.
We're putting that out there for everybody.
Yeah, yeah.
Everyone be self-aware.
But also, like, I really wish I could just stay in my delusions.
Like, I wish there's room for that too.
Yeah, I just, it's sad.
It's really sad.
It's heartbreaking to watch.
I'll be honest.
It was hard-breaking.
Well, it's been a pleasure getting to know you on the show, and I'm so glad that we got to meet,
and I can't wait to see what's next.
This is so crazy.
This is so crazy.
I'm so honored.
Thank you for having me.
Of course.
You're welcome back anytime.
Thank you.
