Mention It All.
A Bravo by Betches podcast.
We don't say that, but now we said it.
With me, Dylan Hafer.
We're going to check me, though.
Hey, everyone.
Welcome back to the Mention at All podcast.
I'm Dylan Hafer, and I am so excited to be joined in studio.
We have a new season of Southern Charm coming out,
and we have here, Ms. Vanita Aspen.
Hi, Vanita.
Hi.
Thank you so much for having me.
I feel like the last time we did this, it was virtual,
so it's so nice to be in person.
In person is always.
better and you're here in New York for Fashion Week. I am. It's scorching hotouts. Yeah, I got off the
plane this morning and I was like, I thought the weather was going to be a little cooler. It's
literally 91 degrees. Well, I'm... Did I bring the heat? Did I bring the heat? What
what makes you more heated and flustered running around at Fashion Week or filming a season
of Southern Charm? Oh, Jesus. I think filming a season is Southern Char. So you're you're back for
Is this your third?
This is my third season, third season, second season as a full-time cast member.
So you've been around a little bit now.
Yeah. You're not a newbie anymore.
No.
How has your trajectory on the show kind of gone for you?
Like, do you feel more comfortable doing it now?
Or is it kind of every day is something different?
I think this is the year that I feel the most comfortable, which I'm excited about.
And I'm also excited for the viewers to see because, like, I'm really 100% myself this season,
where I feel like the last couple of seasons I was like just trying to tread lightly and not step on anyone's toes.
But I'm, yeah, this season's definitely been easier.
Yeah, I mean, I always think the first season that you came on the show was like the hardest.
Not even personally for you, but just one of the strangest seasons of any Bravo show with the pandemic and all the, you know, racial injustice stuff that was happening in Charleston especially.
Like that was a season to do anything, let alone like for you to come into this.
group as like the new person. It's wild. It was wild. And like we were, I think we were the only
show filming during the pandemic at that time. So like, it's all eyes on us. I was just thinking about
some of the scenes where it would be like Craig out on somebody's porch and they're like on talking
through AirPods through the door. It's like, wow, we've come a long way. We have come a long way.
We're back in person. We don't have to sit behind screen doors anymore. It's, it's good. It's good.
So for you this season, on the premiere, we get our first glimpse of your relationship on the show.
Yes.
Tell us about that and your decision to show that side of your personal life this year.
You know, I feel like last year I tried to show my personal life with my family, which I went over well.
But I also wanted to show another side of myself this season.
So I decided to bring my love interest on with me this season, my man, man.
My manny man, L.O.L. He's going to kill me for saying that. But I decided to bring him on. And, like, I was a little nervous at first because a lot of people like to say, you know, don't bring your relationship on TV. It's going to ruin your relationship. But we really went in like headstrong first, sat down and had the talk. I was like, if anyone tries to get in between us, we need to have a powwow, have a secret word that you come in and say. And then I know, okay, and now it's time for me to step in and, like, clean this up. But yeah, he's great. I'm excited to have him on this season.
feel like it probably helps that it's not your first season coming in with this relationship.
And it's like you've been, you've had a couple years to kind of get your sea legs.
And now it's like, okay, like we can now you can see the rest of my life.
Incorporate a little bit more.
Yeah.
It's interesting this season also, Madison is bringing her relationship onto the show.
Which I never thought she would do.
I was going to ask because last, it was a whole thing last year that it was like basically like,
you're not going to see my man.
We're going to go get married to Mexico.
Yeah.
Nobody's going to be there.
Nobody's going to be there.
Yeah.
You know, very like, protect your piece.
Go do your thing in private.
But I mean, right away this season, it's a, it's a 180 in that regard.
So you were surprised that that changed for her.
She's always been pretty private.
I mean, after anyone she dated after Austin, she was kind of private about.
So it was just like I was really surprised to see that she did it.
But I was also happy to see that she did it because it's showing that like she's just trying
to open up more and grow more and show more of her life and share more of it.
and she's not afraid to do it.
So I'm excited for her.
I mean, it's been such a trajectory where, like, her relationship with Austin was so
steeped in this reality TV, like chaos.
And, you know, still we see it reverberating seasons later that, you know, when they see
each other at this wedding, you know, celebration, it's like, God, this is so awkward.
But it really does.
It feels like, you know, from what little we've seen of her relationship with Brett,
that it is like a much different.
Oh, my God.
It's completely.
Like Brett is like a dream man for any girl, you know?
He's tall.
He's beautiful.
He has a great smile.
He's nice.
He can work a room.
So like I almost thought I was describing money for a second.
Pause.
But he is just good and he's great for Madison.
You know, he brings out another side of her that we haven't gotten to see.
So it's great.
It's a little painful in the premiere watching Austin be like unimpressed with Brett.
And he's like, man, I'm like, I don't know what he has that I don't have.
It's like, oh.
Austin's the jealous type.
I don't think you quite are, it's not quite clicking for you.
No, it's like, you're like done now.
You're gone.
You're not here anymore.
But, you know, Austin's a jealous type.
So I'm not surprised that that was his reaction.
We'll get to the other, the guys in the group in a second.
But I want to talk about you and Madison's relationship because obviously last season was tricky for you two.
And in the premiere, you talk about how you've kind of talked and come to this new understanding.
When you started filming for the season, like maybe scale of one to,
10. Like, where do you feel like you really were with Madison?
I mean, what, one being the lowest, 10 being the highest?
One being like, you know, not on speaking terms, 10 being like, we forgot everything that
ever happened. We were like at a four, I think. So it was just like we were on speaking terms,
but nothing more than like, you know, casual like Instagram, casual like conversation,
hey, buy, whatever. If we saw each other in passing. But it was tough in the beginning. But now we've
gotten to a point where it's just like, okay, we're slowly getting back to that 10.
where it's just like, I don't even have to think about it anymore, you know.
I feel like that's, it's like, it feels very refreshing to hear you say four because that sounds
like a low number.
Yeah.
But it's like, but it's realistic.
That's how real life works.
That if you have this big rift with someone, you don't have one one face time and then all
of a sudden it's like nothing ever happened.
It's a work in progress.
And like that kind of speaks true to the season because the girls as a whole, you know, we really
try to make sure this season that like if we have an argument instead of letting that
argument run the entire relationship. We fix it. Like within the moment, within a couple of days,
so we're not doing this whole bickering back and forth. Like we really were a unit this season,
which is great. Yeah. There have been a lot of cast shifts over, you know,
over like a decade into Southern Charmed now. Which is so crazy to think about it. Like I said,
you've been here, you know, you're not the new girl anymore. Yeah. You know, Olivia and Taylor really
like joined the fray last year. But the major change to the season is that Catherine's not there
anymore.
How did you find out that Catherine wasn't coming back to the show?
I'm trying to think.
I think it was just everyone just talking about it because we didn't know what was going
to happen after last season.
I was personally sad about it because her and I were able to work on our relationship
off camera last year.
So then I was like, oh, now we don't get to show people that we work through this.
And like now we're cool.
But yeah, word of mouth, buzzing around.
Everyone was talking about it.
So did you feel like that changed the dynamic a lot when you were filming not having her.
I mean, as a viewer, obviously, she's been on, you know, eight seasons.
Since the beginning.
Yeah.
But for you, just the first couple of years, she obviously was there.
Yeah, it was weird.
She definitely brings like an energy into, into the room that you can feel the moment she's
around.
And like, that was really lacking the season.
It was weird.
I don't know.
They're spicy.
I like her, you know?
You guys also have a big cast.
Like, I was thinking about this because they, so there are three new guys this season,
which we'll talk about in a second.
But like even just the girls,
it's like when when everyone was showing up to Madison's part in the premiere,
it's like,
all right,
like,
Leva's got to be there.
We need a Benita.
Olivia.
Taylor.
Obviously Madison's already there.
So we're like five,
what do we have?
Five girls,
five boys now,
I think.
Is it even?
It's a little more even this season,
I think.
Yeah.
This is wild to think about.
Yeah,
but there's a big group of us.
Do you feel like that makes it easier or,
like,
do you feel like there's less pressure to kind of be like on all the
time because there's so much going on.
Yeah.
And like you can kind of get out of a situation a little easier.
And like once you're out, now the cameras are focused on someone else.
So it's kind of nice having such a big group to film with.
Yeah.
And also it makes it feel like there's always just a lot going on.
Always.
There was never a dull moment this season, ever.
Like, please put on two seatbelts.
So good.
So good.

That's why you rack.
Girl, winter is so last season.
And now Springs got you looking at pictures of tank tops with hungry eyes.
Your algorithm is feeding you cutoffs.
You're thirsty for the sun on your shoulders.
that perfect hang on the patio sundress,
those sandals you can wear all day and all night.
And you've had enough of shopping from your couch.
Done hoping it looks anything like the picture
when you tear open that envelope.
It's time for a little in-person spring treat.
It's time for a trip to Ross.
Work your magic.
I feel like you've done a good job
over the last couple of seasons
of being sort of like an objective observer
in some situations where it's like
you don't have these like messy X relations.
that are lurking around every corner that we've seen.
It's like when you have like Austin running into Olivia and Madison at the same time and then Shep being a total basket case around Taylor, like I feel like you're in a position where you can kind of really just like call it like you see it.
Yeah, I'm just definitely sitting in the back on the sidelines.
Like, okay, guys, like when is this awkward moment going to be over?
It's kind of nice though.
Yeah.
Yeah.
What did you think about how Taylor and Shep handled their stuff coming into this year?
I think they handle it pretty poorly, to say the least.
That's a hard one, dude.
I have no idea.
I wish that they had done, like, I wish they, like, I don't know, kept it tight niche and tried to figure it out as a group.
And then it just became this whole, like, situation and, like, no one can see anything else the entire season.
Yeah.
It's tough because I think when you're in your, you know, life if you're not on a TV show, it's like they probably would.
would be able to just stay apart a little more.
Yeah,
but it's like this,
this kind of like magnetic group energy.
It's like there's literally just no way out unless you decide to leave and never come back.
And that's not going to happen.
Yeah.
Well,
I think like Taylor did a great job last season of like,
she really felt like part of the group.
She did.
Yeah.
She did.
Yeah.
So when I was,
when I came on as a friend of,
that's when Taylor was also on the show just as Shep's girlfriend.
So it was just like,
And we've kind of started at the same time.
She was able to grow with the group and, like, everyone loved her.
Yeah.
So it's just, the season's been interesting.
I think that's part of what makes Southern Charm feel different from some other shows
is that most of the cast has kind of come on, like, gradually.
Like, Madison was first on when she was dating Austin.
You know, having, like, you know, even Catherine, the first season was, like, you know,
maybe not supposed to be as much of a main character as she was.
Listen, Catherine said here, hi, guys, I'm here.
This is my show now.
For somebody like Taylor, it's like, yes, she was in the group because she was around the group.
Yeah.
Because she like, you know, submitted a video or something.
Yeah.
She didn't audition, you know.
She was just like, hi, I'm here.
Yeah.
I know.
I think it's, it's tough, though, when you have a group that is built of like real friendships that makes it harder to kind of untangle things.
Yeah, but it also makes the art show, I feel like so much more relatable.
You know, it's not like we're just sitting around having dinner and like cackling.
We're literally going through and figuring out our relationships as they come and as they, like, separate.
And it's nice to be able to show that on reality TV, because I feel like you also don't see that a lot anymore.
It's just a lot of fighting and no one ever resolved anything.
What did you think of Olivia's second season on the show?
Because last year, a lot of her time was kind of with Catherine, their issues.
And then her situation ship with Austin took up a lot of space.
So she's really in a different spot this year, too.
Yeah.
And I really think Olivia comes out in, like, shut up.
shines the season in the sense of like she just kind of own has her own and she holds her own
throughout the entire season um she's doing great like her and i we bonded a lot this past summer
which has been great so i'm excited too for the audience to see our relationship this season it sounds
like you're pretty much on good terms with everybody yeah with everybody levin and i aren't fighting
Madison and i aren't fighting olivian and i are tight like i literally texted olivia a photo of myself
yesterday and I was like if you put this on the internet and use it as black most,
so help me God.
You're like, we're good right now.
But like, try it.
But like try it.
Like, we're going to have a reunion in a few months and like things could change.
No, I think Olivia and I are going to be refined.
Okay.
Literally thick as thieves, which is so crazy because comparison to last season to this season,
it's like, no.
I mean, I feel like Olivia came in pretty hot for her first season.
Yeah.
And maybe now she's like, she's like riding the wave a little bit more.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
just good. You know, that allowed us to be able to build our relationship. So I really appreciate
that. Yeah. Well, I think that's, I was just talking about this about Salt Lake City, which is like a whole
other canon forums, but that it's like when you come on a show as a new person, it's like you want to
obviously bring the energy and, you know, kind of establish yourself. But also like, on a show like
this, like this, like this, like this, like this. Like, you have to be friends with people if you want to
really make sense to stay in the group. Because if this group doesn't like you, like you, you saw what
happened to me last year. They didn't like me and I wasn't invited to oysters. I wasn't invited to
Friendsgiving. I mean, I was barely told about the things that were happening. So it's like,
you really have to make sure you fix the friendships in this group. Because if you don't,
you'd just be an outcast. Did you, were you surprised that Naomi didn't come back for this season?
Like, yes and no. I know that she stepped away because she wanted to be able to like grow her business
and focus on that. But I feel like she had fun filming last year. So it was a little bit like,
oh, you're not coming back. Yeah. Yeah. I was a little, like, we also fixed.
start things off camera. So like I was again,
I'm like, okay, here we go again. Fixing
relationships and say, where are my friends?
I did all this work and no one's coming back.
It is, I mean, like when you're filming a show like this,
you're spending a lot of time with these people.
And it's like a very heightened environment.
So if there are people that you're close with and on good terms with,
it's like, I want them here.
Yeah, it's like, no, I want them back.
I want to be able to show that, you know, you can be mad at somebody for six
months and then turn around and not your best friends again, you know?
Like I wanted to be able to show that.
But yeah, I was surprised.
that I was surprised that she didn't come back.
I feel like the door's never completely closed.
It's never going to be closed for her.
No, no, no, no, no.
I'm sure if she says tomorrow, hey, can I come back next season?
They're going to be like, yeah, come on.
Like, it'll be fine.
I think also, like, Southern Charm has such devoted fans.
And, like, somebody like Naomi is like, people are rooting for her, like, literally,
constantly.
So it's like, if she wanted to come back, people would love it.
Yeah.
And everyone would eat it up.
And I think the network would also eat it up, too, if she decided to come back.
I always, like, at Broadway.
Like the Southern Charm cast, it's like, it's wild.
We took over.
I mean, I don't get me wrong.
I love my housewife girls.
Yeah.
But like we are top dog.
Like, in my eyes.
So BravoCon in Vegas this year.
I'm excited.
When you're at fashion week, are you like, okay, like I need that for Bravo con?
No, literally, absolutely.
I'm like, hi.
What looks can I pull?
Do you think I can get this in this size in three weeks?
Can I need to try it on and make sure it works?
It's crazy.
Like, I know, I think Paige and I were talking the other day at the U.S.
Open.
She was like, I'm already planning my outfits.
And I'm like, oh, I should do that.
It's a lot.
It's a lot.
I mean, you need like multiple days worth of looks.
You need like the panel, the watch what happens live.
You need the prom, whatever prom thing.
We need a prom outfit.
You need everything.
You need walking around clothes.
It's just like, it's a lot.
But it's fun.
It's fun.
I had a lot of fun last year.
And like the fan interaction really makes every fight and every battle worth being at
BravoCon.
You know, it's like, okay, it's worth it because like, you know, we're fulfilling
all these people's lives.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I think it's, it is wild.
Like, there was the whole thing last season of, like, Craig saying that he was, like, the most popular.
I mean, personal bravo.
And it's like, when you're a bravo con, it's like, it kind of feels like it.
Yeah.
I mean, he is pretty popular.
I'm not going to take that from him.
Whether or not you understand it, you can.
Yeah.
Craig is, Craig is Pillow King, for sure.

See you this summer. Like we said, you have three new guys on the show this season. It's Rod Rodriguez.
Yes. And don't mess them up because I did that. I don't know if you see it or not, but I did that the first episode.
And babes.
It did not go over well.
And JT.
Also, give us the rundown.
Like, who's who, you know, what do we, how do we feel about these guys?
Rod is great.
Rod is a sweet southern gentleman, quiet.
He, him and Olivia, try and date.
Okay.
Which is going to be fun.
Sounds like it's going well.
You know, that's going all right.
And then Rodrigo is great.
He's like, he's been around the group for such a long time.
So I'm a little surprised that he's just now being asked to come on.
But I'm very excited for him because he's fun and like spunky and like he likes to stir up some drama, you know, F warranted.
So he's great.
And then J.T. is like, so help me go when I first met J.T.
I was like, who is this man and why is he here?
But like now we're thick as thieves.
He is going to be the person that the audience is not going to understand.
They're either going to absolutely adore him or hate him, unfortunately.
me. I feel like, yeah. I mean, when you have a show, like we were talking about with a passionate
audience. Yes. That it's like some, you can be obsessed with someone or also it can be like,
I absolutely hate this man, get him off my TV. It's definitely going to be an even split with him
for sure. That's intriguing. Yeah, yeah. I mean, he came in hot, you know. He came in really hot this
season and like he shook the guys up, which they weren't expecting. So that causes a lot of drama too. So
Well, I think with, you know, with this show, like, there's been a lot more turnover, I guess, among the women in the last few seasons.
Whereas, like, Craig and Austin and Shep kind of feel like they're just, like, living their lives, doing whatever they want and kind of, like, leaving chaos in their wake a little bit.
Yeah.
And it's maybe a good thing that the guys have a little bit of.
Yeah, they have a little bit of spice this season.
Yeah, a lot of spice a season.
Do you ever feel like kind of just like how did I end up in this?
Every day.
Weird.
Every day.
I'm like, I always knew that like, and I'm patting myself on the back here.
I always knew I'd be like a general household name or household name, but I didn't know how I was going to do it.
And like, I definitely didn't think.
I used to watch Southern Charms.
I definitely didn't think that I was going to end up on the show and like be here.
I was like, is this a joke?
Like when I first got the call, I think it was love invited me to be.
be her friend the season that I first came on.
So it was three seasons ago.
And I was like, oh, this is like so much fun, but I'm sure I'm not going to be asked
to come back.
And then I got a call for a full-time cast member position.
And I was like, are you?
I mean, I know Vinita's like not a common name, but you sure you call the right one?
It's like, you want to be like in my closet?
I was like, wait, okay.
But yeah, it's wild.
I never thought.
I never thought I'd be here.
Obviously, you were, you had your like platform with being a creator and stuff.
before you were on the show,
but I'm sure doing this the last few years
has really, like, increased your opportunities
and things like that.
How do you feel about that kind of,
you know, two sides of doing the show,
but then also having all your own stuff.
Like I said, you're here for,
you're here for, like, 10 days for fashion week.
Like, but that's not, that's not Bravo.
That's not Bravo.
Yeah.
It's an interesting balance for sure.
I think that my goal,
obviously, is to make sure that I stay true
to who I am and, like,
the platform that I had prior.
so it doesn't like get mixed,
which is why I always still make the effort
to come to fashion me for 10 days
and meet with the brands that I worked with beforehand
and start new relationships with the new ones
because now I'm on Bravo.
So, you know, just trying to keep the playing field even.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Do you feel like, like, do you,
how do you see the future kind of like in your career?
Like, is reality TV something where you're like,
okay, I'll do this for like a few years and then kind of like...
I'm going to do reality TV as long as reality TV wants me.
Okay.
You know, like, I'm not going to stop it before it needs to stop.
So I mean, I feel like you are somebody who like, now that you've been on the show for a few years, you kind of know how to like keep yourself out of mess.
Oh, absolutely.
To a level where it's like you're not out here making a fool of yourself on TV every week.
Like you're you're really like showing off your whole thing.
My regular life.
Like what it looks like.
I feel like mess scares me.
And I'm a Libra.
So I typically don't like to fight.
So I'm like, I'm just going to stay away from the mess.
I don't like arguing and going back and forth.
So I really try to stay out of mess as much as I can.
Which I don't know if I did a good job with that this season or not.
But we'll see.
I was going to say, what letter grade are we giving ourselves on staying out of mess?
I gave myself a C minus.
Okay.
It's not bad.
Okay.
But the thing is, if you gave yourself an A plus on staying out of mass, I think Bravo would not give you an A plus on coming back to the show.
I would have a job.
I would be like, actually, your reality TV career ends now.
No, no, no.
So tomorrow.
Yeah, so your last day is tomorrow.
No.
But yeah, no, C minus.
It's a balance.
I do feel like the people who are kind of like the most successful at like making reality TV work for them are the ones who find the balance.
Like you have to deliver on the show.
But like also you have to know kind of like where the line is.
Yeah.
And like how to draw it.
You know, someone that I like look up to in the reality TV world would be Sutton.
She does a great job at that.
You know, like she's on the ring.
but she's never in the mess, but she stays enough in the know and kind of like in mess that
doesn't involve her to stay relevant, you know what I mean?
So it's just like trying to take some notes from her book to do the same.
Another fashion girl.
I love Sutton.
She's also another person who started as a friend, her first season, and then really kind of like
played herself into the game.
She really stole the show.
Sutton is so sweet.
She's so nice.
She was really uplifting because after last season, I didn't know if I was actually going
to come back.
if I was asked to come back
because it was just like very stressful on my mental.
It was just too much for me.
And I'll never forget coming home from New York,
I run into Sutton at the Charleston Airport.
And she's like, oh my God, you better come back next season
and tell the people who you are
and show them who you really are.
And I was like, okay.
Because like, you know, she had to do the same thing.
I mean, she basically went through the same thing I went through
where everyone was against her.
And now she basically like, you know, she holds her own.
Right.
She and Garcela are like the...
Thickest thieves.
I love them.
There, yeah, no, that's a, it's a fun duo.
Yeah.
I feel like you and Madison kind of give like Garcel and Sutton a little bit.
Yeah, because, well, I'm trying to think who's spicier.
I think Sutton's spicy.
So that could be Madison.
And then Garcel's kind of like, she's spicy when she has to be, but she chooses not to be all the time.
That's me.
Right.
Okay.
Okay.
Yeah.
I think, I mean, Madison, I think, you know, lets it fly a little bit more.
Yeah, yeah.
And I'm like, I'm just standing back like, okay, like, I'm here, but like not spicy,
not that spicy.
Yeah.
So this season, obviously, there's, yeah.
a lot to come. We're just, we're just getting started. Are there any moments this season that
you're really like kind of like bracing yourself to relive on TV? Or do you feel like it's kind of like,
yeah, like, you know, it'll be fine. I think, you know, this year for me, it'll be fine. I'm not really
bracing myself for anything because this season I really did a decent job of staying out. One, the drama
wasn't around me and I did a good job of staying out of it. I did pick aside, but I did stay out of
the drama. So I think I'm okay. Yeah. I'm excited.
to watch it with people this year.
Last year I didn't really watch it that much.
So it's hard.
Okay.
So did you watch it all like before the reunion or were you kind of just like, I don't?
I think I stopped watching last season by whatever my birthday party episode was after
that.
I stopped watching after that.
It was just like, yeah, I was real hard.
So I was just like, you know what?
Somebody can watch it for me and give me cliff notes so I'm prepared.
Yeah.
I mean, yeah, it's tough because you really like.
you don't always even know exactly what's coming in the episodes.
I mean, there's so much, you know, people have scenes that you're not there for.
There's all the interview clips.
Like, it's scary because then it's like you have a person that you see every day.
And then if you turn on the show and then you see them saying something, it's like, oh, is that how you really feel?
Or like, what's the action here?
So I just try to keep it out of sight, out of mind.
Everyone likes me right now.
That's how I'm keeping it.
I feel like you're like manifesting like a smooth.
I'm trying to manifest the smoothest season I think I've ever had.
So help me God.
Well, I'm so excited to keep watching it.
And I'm so excited to see everything else that you have going on too.
Yeah, I'm excited.
Thank you.
It's going to be good.
I'm excited for the viewers to see one, another side of the girls in just a good
season.
It's going to be a good season.
Buckle up.
Buckle up.
Yeah.
