Mention It All - Mercedeh 'MJ' Javid On Returning To TV & Life After Separating From Tommy Ft. Mercedeh 'MJ' Javid
Episode Date: January 13, 2026On this week’s video episode, Dylan sits down with Mercedeh “MJ” Javid to talk about her return to TV with “The Valley: Persian Style”. Dylan and Mercedeh get into the name evolution, Persia...n pride, and why “The Valley: Persian Style” feels like a fresh chapter instead of Shahs reboot. Did Rihanna have something to do with it? MJ opens up about her life now, including her “modern separation” with Tommy and how they’re still a family by design, down to living less than a minute apart. Plus, they also talk about new cast dynamics, the very real way logistics can mess up romance, and her ironic season on The Traitors. Hey everyone, welcome back to the Mentioned-All podcast.
I am so thrilled to have my guest here today.
She is an OG Bravo superstar, and she is back where she belongs on the brand new show,
The Valley Persian style.
Please welcome, Mercedes-Javid.
Welcome.
I love you.
Thank you for having you here.
I want to say, I feel like I speak for a lot of Bravo fans.
It's good to have you back on our screens.
It's good to have you back in the fold.
I think people really missed you guys, and it feels good.
It was true that when you would go out into the world and people would come up and be like,
when is the next season?
Because you know how Bravo is very stealth?
They don't really announce anything ending.
Right.
So we would say like, it's done.
And they were like, no, like even Rihanna.
She, seriously, she DMs and says, did Shaw's get canceled?
And by the time that she noticed, I was like, our new season is coming out in six months.
Amazing.
It was like that.
feel like it's crazy though because it's been like four and a half years-ish since the last season
of Shaw's ended. Yes. Which is a long time, but then it also feels like it flies by because, you know,
we were in pandemic and people were raising families and you and Reza both did have done
traitors. So we've gotten to see you a little bit there. And it just feels like sort of the timing
has to figure out and work out. And now you have this new show with all these new people.
and it feels fresh and exciting and like we have new ground to cover with all of you in a way that
I don't if it was Shaw's season 10 it would have been great in its own way but it would have been
something different.
But you see my body is saying no to that idea?
Did you see that?
My head just started swiveling no.
I am so extremely proud of where we are both the OGs and the newbies.
I love us so much.
We have such great chemistry and we're like all over the matter.
single F-boy married with 20 kids everything in between yeah and if you've seen episode one you
see how transparent the new couples are that you guys haven't met but we've known for yeah
15 years we've known tanning and gregg as long as we've known shervin remember swerven shervin
i do yeah so well it's interesting because over the years on shaz there were so many people who
came and went and popped up or would, you know, would disappear for a couple of years,
but you know that they're still kind of in the mix somewhere. And it does feel, I think
Shaw's was unique. And now on this show, it really feels like that spirit is alive of like,
this is a community. And we're picking different people to focus in on and to be inside their
lives. But like the community still feels like it is the same. Yeah, like I love Natasha and I. We
literally run into each other and like the Calabasasas sunlight. I don't know where your
protein matcha morning coffee is, but she and I were like talking on the phone and I'm like,
oh my God, you're standing in front of me like hang up, hug and then Golnessa moved closer.
Okay.
So she's closer to me and I love that. And I won't ask you to spoil how many like square feet
she's living in. A lot of square feet. Okay. I mean, she did not have to really downsize like I did.
I actually, in my new chapter, we really like, we're in a townhouse now.
Okay.
Yeah.
I think it's fascinating to see these first two episodes because it's this back-to-back
premiere.
Like, we're jumping back in and some things have really changed.
Some things feel the same.
And it's really fascinating to see, okay, we took a few years off.
Where is Golnessa?
where are where's Reza and his marriage where you and Tommy and Shams who the last time we saw Shams on TV was a
baby a newborn yeah and that's crazy like you said from pandemic was the biggest gift in the sense that
I got to stay home and be all in with my son and then I got to recalibrate my professional path
and went fully into the agency.
And then the show, I feel like came back as a natural progression of like when you're
out doing your thing and focusing on the best things, then the right thing gravitates to
you.
Right?
So like I'm very happy to like continue to show my life, but we're so different now.
I think it was it was so interesting when it was first announced that.
it was going to be the valley Persian style.
It took a set.
At first it was kind of like, okay, what does that mean?
But then thinking about what happened with the valley,
where it's these core people that were on Vanderpump rules for such a long time.
And we knew them so well from that show.
But they had moved to a new phase of their lives.
Right.
And we were seeing that evolution and meeting new people that were in their lives now.
In the comments, they're like, the fans are like,
why are we calling this the Persian Valley?
why can't we just call it the Shaw's reboot?
So it is weird to be,
it's Alex Baskin deserves whatever he wants.
And he's like, wait, the Valley was the biggest hit
that Brabba and Peacock have had in this realm.
So he wanted to piggyback on that for the title.
But it's also strange to be Shaw's.
And then, you know, but I don't,
I'm not lamenting the title choice,
even though it's, if you were to put it on its,
own like standalone analysis. It's a little weird. But I think it's I think in a way it's it's an
exciting idea because watching your new show it feels similar spiritually where it's some people that
we've known for such a long time and seen grow up and change. So true. And a bunch of new people
that are in their lives that we don't know yet. And so true. Really focusing in on those
marriages and relationships and family dynamics that I think I remember when the Valley first premiered
and there were a lot of people that were like, I don't want to see people with babies.
Like I don't want to with little kids.
Like what is this going to be?
And then watching it, it's like, oh, this is like the real shit.
This is the real shit.
And whether or not you have a kid doesn't mean that you don't have friends that have kids
and you're not the runoff of like their, you know, the friends that have to change their
lives because the parent friends don't go anywhere or they don't go out after seven or
My friend Natasha, yes, she's like, please schedule things for after eight.
She wants the late nights because her kids are asleep.
And then there's Tadine who's like, you want to do something after seven?
Like I'm in bed and we're like, you don't have a child.
What's your excuse?
You should be going out dancing on the bar.
So we all have something to relate to, right?
Like the valley, the OG Valley is exactly what you said.
It's like they're not bartenders anymore, but we still.
want to know what they're doing because we're learning and getting through life because we're
watching them, right? So, like, that's how I feel about our show. I'm curious for you what it was
like, you know, bringing the cameras and everything that comes along with that back into your life
after having that break, knowing that now your son is older, he's old enough to know what's going
on in a lot of ways.
Your mom obviously was such a great part of the fabric of Shaz for all those years.
And it's great to see her still with that exact same, you know, sharp tongue.
I was worried that.
Always with the lipstick.
She had lost it.
Nope.
I was like, mom, I'm going to serve you coffee in this class.
No, no, no.
No, no, no.
Not the whiskey glass.
No, no, no.
Don't drink coffee from whiskey glass.
No.
But what was it like kind of being, feeling ready to sort of.
sort of embrace that again in the phase of life you're in now.
I didn't feel ready. I was insecure. I thought I was going to be different, not in a good way,
and like rusty. And I was a little nervous about like being like really freaked out to watch
myself. And like again, like shout out to Alex Baskin. Thank you for crushing it. And we
placed our life in your hands and, you know, he didn't disappoint. Yeah. It does.
doesn't feel like you're watching the first episode of like a new like it doesn't have any of
those like first season kinks like it feels like a very tight package in a way that I think some first
seasons need a little bit of time to like figure out what's going on like the stew that needs to
simmer. It did feel like we kind of jumped right in in a great way. That's so true. And I like we do
need to watch the first few episodes, maybe every episode like three times in a row.
Because it's a lot.
And you know, like the transparency of talking about sleeping arrangements and the marriages
of the new cast members?
Yeah, the first episode.
I was at this dinner table and in shock.
I was sitting there with like the utmost respect for people showing their lives that are
new to TV.
And again, like a lot of people, it turns out who are married have habits that nobody
talks about. You know, so I think what we do on this show is we show more than people who are,
you know, living private lives off camera. Like, they don't share those things privately to their
friends. So if the only place that I'm going to find out that you, who is sexy and young and
beautiful and vibrant and you're sleeping in a different bed than your husband. Right. And maybe that
means there's a problem in the marriage. Maybe that means you just sleep better.
Exactly.
Figuring out that it doesn't have to be some sinister thing. It can be. Exactly. Yeah.
It's tea. It's like, okay, then maybe I can stop judging my own marriage or maybe I can
start understanding what's happening in every household. Maybe we can just relate to what happens
when you're adulting and living your life. Because like with Tommy and me in the beginning when we were
just like wild animals that just didn't really have to deal with anything.
We just got to have fun.
And then, you know, you do have to pay bills and, you know, set your alarm clock.
And, you know, like what happens when you can people like couples really do both?
Yeah.
That's kind of what I feel.
I think even, you know, in these first couple episodes, it's like we're trying to do date night.
The amount of date nights that you were aiming for in one year was like.
ridiculous.
Less than two a month, I think.
It was like, yeah, it's true.
He, and I remember when...
Was like 17 or something, was 14?
Yeah, he...
So Tommy Mets anything that's like numerology.
So he picked like Shams's birthday, you know?
And I was like, 17.
And I was like, okay, it was his thing.
And I just remember being like, love where your heart's at, honey, you know?
But my mom was funny, too.
She had clocked it, you know, in the episode.
and she was like, oh, oh, what number date is this, you're going number four?
And I was like, I don't know, honey.
But what's funny, my therapist taught our therapist, Tommy and I's therapist taught us that
date night has rules.
You can't talk about any of your stuff, no bills, no serious, like just on a date.
Right.
It's for fun.
It's not for, yeah.
You can't check in with the baby.
You're not supposed to talk about it.
You're not supposed to, like, just everything you're supposed to do is,
learn how to be just a man and a woman and romance.
So logistics can really fuck up romance.
Right, which it seems like that should be easy to do with the person that you are chosen for life.
But obviously.
Stress.
Yes.
It was just so much responsibility.
So I think that a successful marriage and relationship is one where people know how to
manage everything
and then let this be
like the beginning of a big path
where we can figure out what else people
do at home behind closed doors
on this show.
So good, so good.

I'm curious for you, obviously, over the course of this season, we're going to see a lot of
stuff develop in your marriage. And I'm, you know, I think people are, feel invested in your
journey as a couple and all of that. But I'm curious for you, do you feel at all like doing the
show and that experience helped you figure out where you needed to go and what choices you needed
to make in your family? A little bit. Because,
you know, we've been together for 10 years and things started to hurt a little bit a long time ago.
So being on TV does hold up a mirror to your life, both on and off cameras the same.
And then you have more time to be reflective, introspective.
And I think that I never, ever, ever wanted to separate from Tommy.
I think I wanted to always stay with him no matter what.
I definitely also didn't want to follow the pattern of divorce that my parents, you know,
they had gotten divorced when I was six.
Yeah.
And Champs is six.
So I was adamant that that would never happen to us.
But then I think it's not the same.
It sounds like it's the same.
But just I really think that Tommy and I are going to make it.
we're going to define a modern version of when people separate but they don't just as the title
of husband and wife but like we can still be besties and great parents and we live like less than
a minute away from each other by design yeah right so we're still going to be family forever and
honestly like I just hope that keeps going like the way it has because what you're seeing at
home on the show. I don't know. We'll have to see. I mean, I'm, I'm so glad to hear that that's
where you're at right now and that it has kind of like been in that place lately because I think
it is hard like when, you know, his like sense of humor and the way that he interacts with not
just you, but kind of with the world. It's like it isn't, you could see how it could get like
prickly like that. And I think, you know, to have that dynamic where you are.
figuring out what you need from each other and that in a different way.
I think that's kind of the ultimate goal is just to make it work the way that it's going
to work best for everyone.
Right.
It's true.
It's so true.
Let's like keep our fingers crossed.
What do you think even in this second episode, I mean, you talked kind of about the new
people being, you know, ready to go and just dive in and the conversation that Tenin and
Greg had about how she's going out all the time, whereas he's going to,
his friend's house and the difference between that and sort of feeling, working through those
feelings and is this being insecure? Is this being jealous? Is this just, you know, wanting to get
on the same page? Like, those types of conversations are so tricky. I was so proud of Tanin and
Greg for sharing that. And I really look forward to seeing more of these relationships because
this is exactly what happens. Like if you're trying to work something out and you're in
Tanin's position right there where she's like, then if you can't see it my way, then like,
let's just stop.
And then also with Sky and Bombshot, she's like, we just don't talk because it's no one's
going to win.
Everyone's going to argue and no one's going to win an argument.
I was like, yes, tracks every like relate, relate, relate.
And like I also, I want to see other people struggling, not because I want to watch people
struggle, but because I need to know.
Like I can't just be going about my business day after day.
thinking that everyone else has it perfect
because everyone does assume
that your home is perfect
and everyone's life is flawless.
Can you give me a little bit of a read on Sky?
Because I feel like in the first couple episodes
she has a little bit of a rough dynamic
with Glenessa at the beginning
and this ring that she's supposed to be fixing.
And I feel like Sky maybe needs a couple more episodes
to really like let us get to know her.
But kind of tell me about,
her and how you feel like she figures into the group?
Well, she's best friends with Tanin.
Yes.
And they are beautiful, both of them.
They dress to perfection.
And when we first were hanging out, it was like, I thought she was like really down to earth.
And then as we got to know her, then she definitely will surprise and shock you with her choices.
Okay.
So tune in.
I like a surprise.
Okay.
I think there's lots of surprises to come.
Yes.
I, yeah, I mean, the stuff with, with Reza and Golnessa and Golnasa in the first few episodes
is trying to figure out her living situation and what she can afford and being independent
and all of that.
It's, it's messy.
It's messy.
I think that's something that it feels like the three of you, obviously you've been in each
other's lives a very long time, but even just on TV, we've seen you almost 15 years now.
What is it like kind of growing in the dynamic between the three of you knowing that there's going to be like great days and maybe rough days, but really being in each other's lives like that?
Right, because your closest friends have to tell you the real stuff, whether or not you want to hear it.
And your friends have to level with you.
I think Rezo's really good at that.
He's also like less encumbered.
You know, he has a successful partner.
He's got no children to, you know, tie him down.
and he's very laser focused.
And so we can rely on him and lean on him for that kind of like big brother figure, you know,
because he's got his shit together.
And he is good and strong in a lot of areas in life that, you know,
Golnessa and I could really emotionally benefit from his support.
So it's hard, though, because he's sitting there,
going like, you can't afford that? And she's like, can we fucking stop talking about my moving and my
credit? Like, why do you have to talk about my credit? And I felt like I was like, oh, because that's what's
happening. And that's what we signed up for. Damn. Like, you know. Yeah. Well, it's tough because
it's like, obviously that's not a fun thing to have to sit there and hash out. Right. But, you know,
Reza's been trying to help her find a place to live. You also are in real estate. So like, objectively,
both of you have tools maybe to help her.
So here's the thing.
Her dad was,
this was exactly what was happening in our lives
when the cameras picked up.
We were exactly,
she had to move.
She did have,
her dad did ask Reza to help talk to her.
Yeah.
And we did all have to say,
look, I was like,
do you think that my gas, water,
electric and utilities bill
are not sky high?
I was like, it's a burden to carry
that much responsibility.
Our swimming pools in the valley are the size of the Pacific Ocean.
I'm not kidding.
They are so expensive.
Just to run, like, think about like what is...
It's California.
There's no water.
Like it's...
Right.
It's a drought.
And so if you want to keep that pool blue and keep the lights on and feed your child
and go to private school and have...
$3,000 of weed a month or whatever.
Tommy could not...
We could not believe that that was even a real statistic about...
an ounce every other day. We're like, yeah, she's exaggerating, of course. And so, you know,
I gladly brought myself into the fold and shared with her that this isn't just you. We all
have to work our butts off and worry about bills. Yeah. And talking to Alex Baskin about coming back
to TV to talk about real life issues, like living on a budget, having to work hard, having to
think about being a productive real estate agent.
Like all of those things are real and thinking about college.
Like if I don't inherit my son's college tuition from my family inheritance,
then I would be saving now for Shams's college, right?
And not to mention, you know, investments and retirement and the age of our parents.
So it's really so cool that we get to talk about these things.
with with each other on TV, really.
I think that's maybe a misconception that people might have of like any, I think for
some people, it's like anyone you see on TV is like, okay, so they're.
They must be rich.
A rich celebrity.
Trust fund.
Yeah.
To ever worry.
Everyday problems.
And obviously there are people who fall into that category.
But like you guys were, you know, fortunate and worked very hard to be on a long
running TV show that went away. And, you know, there's lots of different factors. And it's,
yeah, you have to think about all those things. Yes. And I'm like, I know it does sound like such a
dichotomy and it does really contradict what we understand to be real. But that's all the more reason
to just be happy that, you know, we, we do it in like I know, this sounds like I'm like harping on it.
but we're doing it because we need it,
and I think, like, I like to watch people going through what I'm going through.
So I'm, like, really proud of that.

Watch only on Prime
It's been a couple years now
Since you were on Traders
And you were on
I mean that season of Traders
That you were on was like
The best
I mean
The best season
Skyrocket
Massive hit
I feel like that season kind of set up
The show's winning Emmys
It's cultural relevance
I mean
Your moment where you're backing up
In the mesh body suit
That's culture
Here for a betches
Yes that's
The last time I said, literally that.
What was it like for you having that experience?
And I would imagine feeling like you were exposed to a completely new audience.
It was, it's so true because you actually, like, because certain population of the world don't watch Bravo.
And now you're like in this new like category of eyes on you.
But no, the experience of traders going to Scotland.
and leaving my four and a half year old, which I thought was a perfect time to just take a little
step outside the mom bubble and be at like a sleepaway camp where you're doing the scariest things
and going into a pine box in the middle of, you know, God knows where. It was so unique.
And Larsa and Marcus Jordan were like all over each other. And there's Fadra and me like hanging out
until four in the morning and Johnny bananas and there were so many people like
Parliament John Pete from the pilot from we just had so much fun yeah it is one of those
shows where it's like you will never I mean obviously there's other reality shows and stuff
but like you'll never have that experience never doing anything else you will never have that
experience ever again if they had me go back to traders I wouldn't feel the same because you
It's so unique when it's the first time.
I loved seeing you on that show.
And I think that it was like such a fun way, you know, while we were in this interim period between Shaz and Persian style, it was like great to just kind of almost like check in.
But in such a lighthearted like way just like to see you again.
I would be remiss if I didn't say that I think that being on traitors was put a spotlight on me that gave me the opportunity for.
where we are. And I may have gotten Alex's attention. And he may or may not have invited me to do
the Hot Mike podcast. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. If it weren't for that. And one thing leads to another to
another. Well, it's all, I mean, I mean, you look at Fadra who is on that season and she's back on
housewives. It's, it, there are, it is such a, it's a family and not everybody always is
having the same, you know, situation at the same time. But like, I think also like,
I remember seeing you guys at BravoCon in 2022, I think, the last one that was in New York.
And I remember talking to Reza at that one.
And he was like, we're here and we're happy to be here, but also like.
We don't have a show.
We don't have a show.
And then, you know, to BravoCon in 2025.
Uh-huh.
In Vegas.
Because we did every single BravoCon.
The last one in Vegas was our fourth one.
Yeah.
So it was interesting that Bravo kept inviting us to them.
They were like, we're keeping on the back burner.
We don't know what we're going to tell you about this.
And it's like the timing, the timing had to work out.
And now it feels like it really has.
Yes.
I wanted to, before we started recording, we were talking a little bit about your name.
Yes.
And you've been MJ.
You've been Mercedes.
And I, I love Mercedes.
Thank you.
Can you talk to me about kind of the evolution of and sort of really leaning into.
to now using that name?
Sure, because it's Persian pride, it's cultural,
like a nod to saying that, look,
sometimes you just make things easier for everybody else.
I can have 100 nicknames and that's great,
but it's so important to pay the proper homage
and ask you to spend an extra second pronouncing my name
instead of like, oh, whatever is fine.
It kind of comes with like having, becoming more mature and also now I see the world through
a different lens because I want Shams to acknowledge his Persian culture and how important it is.
And he's, I'm full Persian, he's half Persian.
You know, he's also half Queens, Irish Italian.
So I love Merceda.
It's, it is a beautiful name.
I've always thought that.
And I'm just, again, I'm proud of acknowledging that.
We can have our nicknames, but let's remember our given name.
I love to, like, on the show, even, like, the, like, title cards and stuff, it shows, like, in Farsi and then, like, in English, like, over it.
Like, I thought that was such a nice touch.
And, like, you guys, I mean, you always are, like, throwing in little bits of Farsi and stuff on, like, when you're having conversation.
Like, it just, that cultural element, I think really is, like, really so important to both shows that you've been on.
I think that it's nice to feel like that is still front and center after all these years.
It's so true.
I mean, it's like you said, the tapestry of our culture and how international it is.
It's really, I love how much overlap we have with so many different cultures throughout the whole world.
Yeah.
And it's really nice to connect with someone who lives in the United States, but is originally
from a different country and feels a connection in through food.
through any ritual, through any of our traditions, because it's bringing us together and feeling
less transient than being spread out all over the world. It's like it really unifies us. So no matter
where we are, we feel like we have a connection to somebody else that we didn't necessarily
know that we had. Yeah, I love seeing that. I want to finish, I've seen a lot of people with
this new show coming being like, okay, so I haven't seen all nine seasons of shots. I'm, I could go back and
catch up. I can't wait to hear what you're going to say about this. I don't know if I need to. Can
you can you tell me for people who maybe haven't seen all of Shaws or haven't seen any of Shaz
why you think they should watch the Valley Persian style as its own brand new thing? Okay. So I think
you should watch season one because it has six episodes and it will lay the groundwork for everything.
and everything after that optional.
But, you know, like, honestly, like, even though I got married,
I found out if I had any eggs to get pregnant.
We all went through so many things.
But this show is so modern,
and we just picked the needle back up from a four-plus year break.
So it's your choice.
I think everyone should watch The Valley
and go and watch at the last.
least he's in one of Shaw's.
Yeah.
And if,
I mean,
the binge guide.
Oh,
I do.
Oh, yeah,
they posted it on Bravo.
Oh,
that's a great one.
I think I re-shared that.
They invited to collab.
Thank you.
So what do I,
I think I posted it,
but I may not have read it.
What do I tell people to do?
I like,
if you take the time,
you don't have to do it this week,
but like,
if you ever take the time to go back
and watch Shaz,
oh my God.
There is a lot.
We're watching Diamond Water.
Oh, my God.
you know,
furniture get thrown.
And you're going to actually,
so when I do watch the cast members
that are no longer with us.
Yeah.
On the show.
Sorry,
thank you for clarifying.
Could you imagine?
Oh my God.
Take me all the way.
So if you go back and watch,
when I see the shaws that are not on the reboot,
I'm even more proud of the valley,
the Persian style,
because there was like a lot of,
I just, and I found it hard to like make a show with like Asa sometimes and Lily sometimes.
And I'm not saying that they wouldn't be different if they were here today.
Like my current cast, they're so,
we're like a real group of friends that I feel like we're just brave.
And so I like, I love us so much.
I guess you're, I'm getting triggered by.
Like, I'm getting triggered by like, also keeping her pregnancy a secret and, you know, whatever.
Like, I don't want to go backwards.
There's a lot of water under that bridge.
Gotta let the water flow away.
No, I think there's lots of treasures to discover for people who want to go back and watch Shaz for the first time.
Right, right.
But also from watching even just the first couple episodes of your new show, it really is like its own experience in a way that I think is.
So true.
Anybody can have a great time watching.
So true. And I can't wait to keep watching. By the way, like, I guess some people, you know, do keep big secrets from other people. So I can't be mad at it.
We'll just let that one like sink in a little bit. And we'll find out together.
Indeed.
Thank you so much for being here.
Thank you. It's such a pleasure to have you back. And I can't wait to watch the rest of the season.
Me too.
Thanks for watching. Don't forget to rate review and subscribe. And until next time, be cool. Don't be all like uncool.
