Hey everyone. Welcome back to the Mention at All podcast. You guys, I am so excited for my guest today. He goes way back with
Bravo. And I am so glad that we have a new show to finally talk about. Reza Farahan. Welcome to the show.
Thank you, my man. So good to be back with you. It's been a minute. It's been a minute. Minutes.
I feel like the last time, I think I've seen you since then, but the last time you were on this podcast was maybe like COVID times on a Zoom.
I agree. And it's been long enough. Yes. I was so excited.
when we finally got the news about the Valley Persian style.
We had Merceda here around the premiere to talk about it.
I've been, you know, keeping up every week.
It's a, you guys are having a great season.
Great season.
I'm so impressed with my new castmates who are delivering.
They were, most of them were super open and real about their lives.
And to have Golnessa and Merceda who are like PhDs in reality TV along with me, it just.
Yeah.
And to have 32 flavors, Alex Baskin, and to be back home on Bravo, it just was like the holy Trinity.
It felt so organic.
I think people don't, if people haven't been, there's a lot of newer Bravo fans, people who have discovered Housewives and Vanderpump and all the different shows, you know, maybe in the last five years or so.
I think people don't realize how much Shaz was a core piece of that, like, Bravo identity for,
a long time.
You guys, nine seasons.
10 years, nine seasons.
And you're so right, Dylan, because I have people on my gram or in my DMs or in my
comments, like, didn't know about Shaw's, had never watched Shaw's.
And now I'm going back and I'm watching Shaw's.
And it's so good.
So to have like a whole new generation of people that are getting into Shaw's, it's
nuts.
Are there any moments that you have seen people like tagging you.
in or recirculating from shahs that you're kind of like, man, I don't know if I want that to be
on the internet again.
My fight with MJ is like recirculating like no one's business and it's so traumatizing
because it was such a difficult period of my life that I'm like, I don't want to see it.
It, I can, like, I have a visceral reaction to it and it is really hard for me to experience.
It's tough because when you're on a show like that and I mean, the Valley is the
same way where people are getting into real shit. You're talking about relationships and friendships and
marriages and all of that stuff that is is hard and not always positive. Like nine seasons of that show,
that's a lot of real life that's out there. So much. And especially with you and MJ, like, you go back
way, way, way back before TV, before anything. 30, I think almost 35 years, she and I go back.
Yeah. So yeah, it's a lot of blood, sweat and tears. A lot of laughter too. Yeah. But for some reason,
it's those really hard, awkward moments that somehow find their way back into the ecosystem. And I think
like that's the thing. Obviously people, people want you guys to be good. And I think that was part of the
reason why when those, you know, moments were happening on Shaz, it was like, everybody felt like
this isn't right for things to be so divided.
Yeah.
And I think that's been really great on your new show that, you know, you guys, we haven't
seen you in a minute together and that it's like, oh, thank God, like, we're still okay.
Yes.
I mean, the thing with Mersona and I, we really spent a good number of years when we weren't
on TV, building our relationship back brick by brick in a very authentic way because we
didn't have a show.
We weren't doing it for any reason.
than to get good with one another.
So it wasn't like I was thinking or she was thinking, well, he has an ulterior motive.
We signed up for this new show.
So none of that was going on.
We were just reestablishing our connection with one another, which I'm very grateful for.
Because once cameras were up, we were already in a much, much better place.
Yeah, I think it's, I mean, with, I think this was true of Shahs as well.
but, like, you could tell if they had picked up cameras for Valley Persian style,
and it was the first time you were seeing Golnessa and Mersede in three years,
it would have felt bizarre.
Very.
And you would have been able to tell, I think.
And, like, the way that this show just kind of,
you're picking up right where we left off,
but also there's new people we're meeting.
There's new developments.
You know, Eli and Shams are, like, little humans now.
Like, it's great to see kind of like how little time it feels like his past,
but also we're moving on in life.
100%.
You know the needle got picked up on the record and it went down further along in the song.
Right, right.
But like, you know the song.
So you still know the word.
So it feels like, yes, we know these people.
They feel very connected.
Some time has passed.
I feel more settled in my skin.
I'm more established financially.
been married for 10 years. So I'm also a lot more comfortable. So interacting with them from this
place where I am at now as opposed to when Shaw's wrapped, I'm a completely different person. And I did
this show much differently. With Shaw's, I was always so anxious. I was so worried about getting
fired, the show ending, the ratings not being good. And I made a decision that regardless of anything,
I was going to enjoy the process while it was happening.
And I wasn't going to like think about or be stuck in like a hamster wheel of like what used to bog me down before.
That's so interesting.
And I think also, you know, as somebody who is not part of the Persian community, I think when Shah's first started, part of the hook of it was there's this whole community that you might not have heard about or you might not know about.
and look at these fabulous people living these lives in L.A.
And it's this community.
Whereas with the Valley Persian style, it's like, no, you're going to see your friends again.
You're going to, you're going back home with these people that you watched for 10 years.
And so it is like people are watching because they want to see what's going on with you,
not because they're like, oh, what is, you know, what's this crazy new thing I'm going to discover?
Totally.
And now we, because people did watch.
the ones they did, we have a whole slew of other people from different cultures and backgrounds,
whether they're Dominican, whether they're Italian, whether they're Greek or Latin, you know,
Mexican, all sorts of beautiful Latin American countries who hit us up regularly.
Right.
And they're like, your mom is just like us.
You guys are just like us.
It's about the food.
It's about the family.
And so, yes, in the beginning, we were this shiny new thing.
Like, what is this Persian?
thing.
Yeah.
But now it feels like we've taken people on this journey with us and they, we, like,
they've connected with us.
Like, they feel like family.
When I go out, sometimes people will come up to me and they'll ask me about my family
or they remember like very specific details about the show.
Like they're very invested.
You're like, I didn't even remember that.
A hundred percent.
They're asking you about an outfit you wore in 2016.
Legit.
Yeah.
Legit.
It is funny.
like the Bravo fans like obviously they they are strongly opinionated and have you know specific
taste but like when those when that community is riding for you like it's it can do a lot it can do a lot
you know and when they're not writing for you like we saw with Jill Zeran very recently you know
it the pendulum swings in in both ways but I have such an appreciation for the audience because
as a gay Middle Eastern man who felt very alone and isolated in my formative years, I did not know
how the audience would receive me. And the reception was so amazing and they've been a part of my
world for so long, even when I wasn't on TV anymore, when I would go live or when I would
post pictures. The Bravo audience is so smart. They're so invested and they really, they
lifted up my spirits at a time when I was really down when the show wasn't on the air. They were
with me and I felt the love and support. Yeah. I was watching these last couple episodes when you were
celebrating Adam's birthday in Palm Springs. When you said it was about to be a 10 year anniversary,
I was like, damn, time flies. Flies. And 15, like 15 years together, 10 years married. Yes. That's a big
achievement. That's awesome. In gay years, that's like being married for 30 plus years. Uh-huh.
And in reality TV years, you're doing pretty good.
Very good, right?
Because I watched all, I'm a Bravo Lab, but I'm also a Bravo-Holic.
Like, I watch all these shows.
I've seen all of, you know, the housewives who come and whose marriages crumble and, you know, so many fail.
I feel like the ones that fail outnumber the ones that survive.
It's tough out there.
Yeah, it is for a pimp.
Well, and I think also like you, you know, 15 years, that's a long time in anybody's life, but also like that that entire time for you has been since Shaw's started.
Like people, you've had this kind of reality TV element in your life that whole time.
And I think just navigating all of the ups and downs and journey of a relationship under that, you know, microscope is, is impressive too.
Totally. And I'm very grateful that I met Adam before Shaw's.
ever aired.
Like, we were dating.
We were, I would tell him we're hanging out because he's almost 11 years younger than I am.
And I wasn't taking him seriously at the time.
He was in his 20s.
I was in my mid to late 30s.
And I was like, you know, why would he want to be in an like established relationship?
When I was in my 20s, I wanted to have fun.
So he came at the right time because I feel like had I met him season three,
In the back of my mind, I would always be thinking, like, is there a TV element that he's into?
And that's why he wants to be with me, which never came in to play with our relationship.
So it made me have a trust level and a dedication to him on a relationship level that was different, I think, than had I not.
So good. So good.

What was it like when the opportunity to do this new show came around,
was there any hesitation from you or from Adam of like,
okay, we've had these last few years of whatever our life was looking like without it.
Do we want to jump back into that pool?
What a great question.
Because Adam and I used to get into the biggest fights every year right before we were going to start filming Shaw's.
And because Shaw's didn't really include him, I always felt like he wasn't on board and he was just kind of doing it for me.
I have to tell you this time around with this production company, 32 flavors, not only does he feel included, he's like on every email.
He knows when the crew is coming to our house to set up lighting.
And he feels like much more respected and a part of the process now.
And it's been a completely different experience for him.
Yeah.
Well, I think with the first iteration of the Valley and also with your show,
I think it is sort of unique in the way that it's about, you know, there are single people on the show,
but it's also about these couples.
And I feel like it weights the.
both people in the couple very equally.
Yes.
And it's telling the story of the whole group kind of on the same level,
which obviously with something like housewives, it's like, okay, it's the ladies and then
maybe the husbands get, you know, one scene.
Yeah, and they come and sit behind you at a reunion.
But I think it's been, it's been great to see kind of even this season, like,
more of the friendship dynamic between Adam and Golnessa, like that that is such a specific
relationship that it makes sense to have that highlighted on the show or you know some of the moments with
the two of you guys like when he's speaking a little bit of farcey like i think like those kind of moments i think
it really helps build out the whole like world of of what's going on in your lives absolutely and it
really it demonstrates like what i experience at home like my husband first of all golnessa
her she has hearing issues and so adam facetimes with her because she's
She has to see your mouth when you're talking to her.
And Adam works from home from an editing base.
So in between doing real estate showings and seeing clients,
I come home and he'll be in his office and I can hear the two of them like gossiping or talking.
And it's so nice that you guys get a window into my world in a sense
and a way that wasn't coming through on Shaws of Sunsad.
So I love the fact that you get to see that Adam and Gouldness,
are incredibly close.
Like they talked two, three times a day.
They were just in Columbia together, getting stem cell therapy.
Hell yeah.
Yeah.
I was, I will say, I had no concept because Golnessa's whole marriage annulment situation
with Dennis happened in between shows.
Yes.
I had no concept of how many layers there were to that situation.
Yes.
And so when I was surprised when he showed up on that.
the show and then I was surprised as everyone else was that she invited him to Palm Springs.
You were surprised?
I feel like when you have a friend group that is as interwoven as you guys are, when he showed up
in Palm Springs and it was, it was like, it isn't only important whether or not you and
Golnessa have had a talk and are on okay terms.
Like this is a situation that has affected all of us and that we all,
have underlying issues with you now and you can't just like sweep that away.
Not only that, but the fact that he came to a dinner table at my husband's birthday and he's
talking about the 13 years when she wasn't good to him, I'm thinking like, bro, what planet are
you on? You are not my friend. Like I only care about her feelings. So you heard her and I sat there
with her when she was crying over you.
So I'm not cool with you.
Like now if I need to put you in the cool cat,
like I need to refile you out of like,
you know, not cool into the waiting period.
Yeah, like into the file cabinet of being cool.
I'll move the paperwork over here.
But she hasn't let me know that you guys are cool.
When she does, I'll refile you over here.
But I only have a relationship with you because of her.
We're not independently friends.
Like, you're her friend, her business partner, ex-husband, whatever the complicated relationship is.
And you're over there.
Like, don't have any expectations of me.
Like, I'm not going to come through for you like that.
And then suddenly he was like at the house for like 36 hours.
I'm just like, what happened?
The cameras were at the house.
That's what happened.
He's like, what time are we leaving for dinner?
Yeah.
No, no, no.
It's such an interesting.
group and that trip to Palm Springs, I feel like, you know, it's in such a short amount of time.
I was watching those episodes and I was like, wait, I am so interested in like each person's
thing that we're going through because following like the whole thing with Amir and his wife
who passed away and Natasha's really complicated feelings about that. And, you know, Tannina and Greg
are working through, you know, their stuff. And then, I mean, Sky, Sky is a character.
Is she?
Is that what we're calling her?
I mean, that meltdown in Palm Springs about not wanting to live in the valley and knowing
every person who has stepped foot in an Arawon.
Yeah.
That was kind of wild to watch.
The stick was chewy.
The house smelled.
The room was small.
It was hard to be around.
And I feel like, you know, you film.
But there's no way to show the audience everything that happens, right?
Yeah.
So we sit there for hours consuming a meal.
And it just was a lot.
I absorbed a lot of her energy.
And it was all not positive, you know?
And just the way she was talking about like,
I don't like the vibe in the valley.
I don't like the valley.
I don't like any of the restaurants in the valley.
I'm thinking to myself, girl, you're singing at a table of people.
who all live there.
Why would you want to come across offensive?
Like, I might not like your shoes or your pants or your shirt,
but I don't necessarily need to let you know.
Some things are okay to keep within, right?
Like, I don't need to walk around pointing out all the things I don't like in the world.
It's not me being honest.
It's just me being uncouth.
Like, you just...
Yeah, it's always interesting when somebody who,
who seems to have such like high standards and wants, you know, this type of treatment, like
doesn't realize that the way that they're speaking to people or the way that they're behaving
is kind of a little like lower, lower tier.
I'm like, sweetie, read the room.
When you're here and everyone else is over there.
Yeah.
And your husband is dead silent.
That was tough.
Dead silent.
Not only was your husband dead silent when you got up from the table, when you were not there,
he made excuses for your behavior.
Okay?
Like that tells me, if I watched that episode back, if I were Sky, I'd be like, hmm, maybe I'm the problem.
Maybe.
I'm not 100% sure, but maybe it's me.
Well, the way, the whole thing with her and Tanin was also, like, tough to watch because first of all,
if I have a friend and they're offering me a discount on the jewelry, I'm going to pay whatever price they told me.
Especially if you, that's what you sell it to everyone in your orbit for.
Like she has prices on her website, but anyone that's friends or family that she sells to, they don't pay those super inflated prices on the website.
Even at her trunk show, she told us everything is 30% off.
And it's still, that is high retail at 30% off.
Yeah, she sells beautiful pieces.
It's very expensive.
Like, I can go to Cartier and Van Cleef for those prices.
Or you could get, you could throw your friend Sky a bone.
I could.
The funny thing is I actually tried to buy something.
Uh-huh.
And she sold it to someone else at the trunk show, which in hindsight is, was okay with me.
It was okay with you.
Yeah, totally.
I mean, you did your piece.
You left the table and tried to go talk to her and it was not received.
I literally genuinely was like, because Tanning said my jaw was on the,
like there were parts of my jaw on the floor, right?
So I thought, you know what?
Maybe I'll grab her and tell her to come back and just like not leave it the way it was left.
Because let's blame me.
I brought up the oil, right?
Why did you throw the discount into your friend's face?
Like, come talk to your friend, right?
And it just...
Well, I think it's tough because when you have a situation like that,
it's like even if there's no realistic way that you could make things totally okay that night,
if you could come back to the table and say, I'm sorry for this one piece of it,
or I know I, that was a lot.
I wish I hadn't gone quite that far.
Like, to even start to inch toward a resolution.
Yeah, we love each other.
Let's put a pin in it.
And this was a lot of drama.
Let's put a pin in it.
We're going to wake up tomorrow and we'll have a combo.
Right.
Whereas instead she leaves and then the next time we see her is her, you know,
at home complaining to her husband.
And then it's like, so now we've actually moved backwards.
A thousand percent because it's about you were under attack.
They were all coming for you.
There was zero accountability.
And then when she sits with her husband, it's like,
you did nothing wrong.
I told the boys you did nothing wrong.
I'm like, oh.

I feel like something that you are good at as a friend is giving someone a little bit of tough love when they need it.
Because I know the situation this season with Gigi and her real estate conundrum, some of the, you know, going after Sky, after she left the table.
I feel like that is something where you are supportive of someone, but you also will tell them what they need to hear.
Absolutely.
Like I grew up with an immigrant dad who moved to this country in his 30s, didn't have a pension or a 401k and taught me like, you know, if you can't afford something, don't charge it on a credit card and pay interest for something because something that costs $10.
If you buy it, if you're paying interest on it, it could cost you 20 bucks.
Like don't rent.
Own.
So downsize your life until you can save a deposit so you could buy a place because, you know, if you're renting at the end of the.
the day you have to give that place back to someone yeah and you don't get anything for all that
rent money you paid them so i'm always trying like i have this guy who's no longer here with me who
taught me all of these golden nuggets and obviously i care about my friends i want them to benefit
from that knowledge so i try when i can i mean she didn't receive it sky didn't receive it and
you know i just go back to my corner and i feel like i did my best i try
it didn't work, but at least I gave it a go.
So when you think about like being there for your friends and trying to help them,
going into this season with Mercedes and Tommy.
Yes.
Obviously you and Tommy still had not had that kind of coming back together kind of moment.
Yeah.
Since we saw you on Shaz, it's clear watching the show that they were in a really tough place.
Yes.
How much of that were you able to sort of like figure out or intuit it?
while you were filming.
I did not figure out any of it because Maris was doing a very good job of painting a much rosier
picture than was actually going on.
She was making me believe that he was in a better place than he was.
She was painting a better picture of their marriage because I think she wanted us to look at him
in a better light.
And so I was like, hey, maybe I should reach.
out to him you know I was doing things without any knowledge had I known I would definitely
you know watching him I think I would have proceeded much more cautiously yeah well it's hard
because I feel like for for you having the relationship that you do with mercede like there's this
it's better for everyone the more that you can become comfortable having everyone together and it
seems like for Tommy he was in this place where it was just like nope not interested never going to
happen it is what it is and that's the end yes and you have to understand i've been present when
almost every single person in the group has asked her in front of me where's your husband
where's Tommy when's Tommy going to so i was thinking like is there anything i can actually do
because it's very annoying after someone asks you that question
two, three, four, five, six times at different events, it starts to wear on you.
Right.
And so I'm thinking of myself, is there anything I can do to help my friend not feel like a
single married person when she goes to events?
But it's even when you're not there, she, you know, Golness is coming over just to like
say, hey, it's like Tommy's out the back door.
Like, it's pretty watching the season.
Like, it's surprising even knowing kind of some of it that it's like,
Oh, he's fully just like not willing to be anywhere where anyone else is.
Not only that, I feel like from watching, because I didn't interact with him, but from watching the show, even when Vita June sat down with him and was trying to have a conversation and let him know, like, listen, I'm talking to my daughter and she's not happy.
Yeah.
He was not open to a combo.
He's like, then she should get divorced.
Yeah.
You know?
And so I feel like he's my humble opinion.
He didn't come across as being open to anything other than decisions that he had already made internally.
Like he knew best and that was that.
Well, and, you know, a relationship like that is built on compromise and working together and finding solutions to problems.
And yeah, you got to do that.
100%. I mean, I've been married for 10 years. You have to understand to get to that. You have to do a lot of compromising. It can't just be my way or the highway as much as I would like it to be that way. It just doesn't work that way in real life. Yeah. So what has it been like these last, you know, few months kind of with MJ? Like, you know, how are you seeing her kind of like through this process? So I said to her, regardless of, you know,
of your decision, I will be there for you.
If you want to go back, if you want to divorce, whatever you decide is right for you,
I will stand behind you a thousand percent.
And when she made the decision, I was very proud of her.
She's a wonderful person who works very hard and she deserves to be loved the way she wants
to be loved.
And the fact that she's making that choice for herself, I think, is a big deal and it
should be applauded.
And I wanted to.
her marriage to work. I wanted her to be so happy that divorce was never an option. But now that I know
what I know, I'm very supportive and I'm very happy for her and I'm very proud of her. And she already
looks and feels much different. Like she's in a better place. Her sparkle is coming back. I will say
like I've, you know, she and I have met each other many times over the years. Like when I saw her a couple
months ago, like her energy was so great and just like such a, yeah, it feels like there's almost
like a weight lifted off of her in a way. A hundred percent. I couldn't agree with you more.
And that I'm very grateful for because my friends sparkle, light, airiness, her positivity and her,
like, joy is creeping back in in a way that I had not seen in years. Yeah. It's so interesting
thinking about like, you know, if we have another season of the Valley Persian style.
I'm like, Tim, are we about to see like Merceda getting back out there?
Like, it's so crazy to think about.
I don't want to share my personal conversations, but I am living.
I don't even know if, forget the Valley Persian style season two, which I would love for that to happen.
Yeah.
And I think that's not up to me.
It's out with the powers that be.
but just to see my friend back in that space of like being excited to be with someone and have someone
in her life and giddy and make out with something like letting her be the like center of attention
like give yeah feeling good about herself yeah because i know that woman i spent my 20s and 30s
with that woman and that woman was phenomenal like to be able to be around that again is very
exciting for me. One thing I want to ask, is there anyone, you guys have such a great cast on
persons out, also some of the most gorgeous, stunning people. Yes. Whenever Tanin comes up in the
confessional outfit with like the gold chain on the dress and I'm like, that is a stunning
woman. Natasha and Tanin are stunning. Stunning. They were at an event together wearing all black
as Persians love to do.
And someone hit me up
because I posted pictures from that event.
Yeah.
One of my friends hit me up and was like,
who are the hot twins?
Like, they are stunning.
And I was like, oh my God, those are my girls.
Are they like really close, Natasha and Tanin?
In what sense?
Like friendship-wise?
Well, because I feel like on the show,
Tanin is, her dynamic with sky
is like really taking center stage a little bit.
And I'm like, I feel like she and Natasha would have fun.
together. We're all very close. The funny thing is, we all hang out so much that I'm worried for
Sky that she's putting herself on an island. Yeah. And it's translates. It resonates. The audience
picks up on it. It's like, bro, we haven't seen you. And then cameras are back up and you're going to
come around again. You don't want to live in the valley anymore. Yeah. Well, it's complicated,
I think, because when you have a show that is such a, such an ensemble,
thing where all of you guys are really working together to, you know, move the, the story forward.
If you have one person who, like, is saying she doesn't want to be there, it's like,
okay, well, like, good job.
Careful.
Yeah.
Like, if you're going to write yourself off the cast, like, what am I going to do about it?
Is there anyone from Shaz of Sunset Days that you think could pop up, that you could see
coming around organically on the valley at all?
I mean, honestly, I would.
love for the audience to see as many of the OGs yeah um of Shaw's like I would love for Lily to come
around organically because she's in my life she's in Adams life she's in Golnessa's life I would love to
see destiny come around organically just come around like they don't have to be on the show yeah
was a good time yeah you know Shervin is in and around the orbit right it would be cool for him
to come around um I don't know that
you know, there would be an opportunity for Mike. I'm not sure that that would be the best idea.
I think female fans might. There's a lot of, a lot of history. Yeah. A lot of water under that bridge.
A lot of water under that bridge. But I mean, like we said, when you have, you know, nine seasons, 15 years that you've been in this orbit, like, it's a lot of, a lot of material.
A lot of material. I'm glad that we're still getting to see you guys. Thank you so much. It's been.
so
I feel like I manifested it
I honestly didn't feel like
Golessa MJ and I were done
and I made such a huge effort
for us to maintain our bond
when we weren't filming
and I was running around
pitching shows left and right
and I knew
when Alex Baskin called me
I was tearing up
and it felt like
whatever reality gods
were out there were listening to me
and my prayers were answered and we were coming
home to Bravo. Totally. And I love
I mean, in the meantime though, you were on the
first season of Traders. Yes. Mertesne was on
the second season of Traders which
her performance, I mean, she had
a performance on that show. Iconic.
She made it to the end. And I think that that also was like
another way for people who had not
seen nine seasons of Shads of Sunset to be like,
okay, like that person has a personality that seems
like it's something I want more of.
And I feel like all of those ingredients together.
And then, you know, Alex Baskin, right place, right time.
It's like, there we go.
Let's go.
Let's do this.
I'm so glad that we got to do this.
Thank you so much for having me.
Thank you for being here.
Absolutely.
Maybe, you know, next time.
We'll see you next season.
I mean, from your mouth to God's ears.
Okay.
Well, thank you, thanks everyone for watching.
Don't forget to rate, review, and subscribe.
And until next time, be cool.
Don't be all like uncool.
