Starting point is 00:00:28 See Store Online for details. Betches Media presents. Ha ha, laugh, funny. Mention It All, a Bravo by Betches podcast. We don't say that, but now we said it. With me, Dylan Hafer. We're going to check me, boo. Hey, everyone, welcome back to the Mention It All podcast.
Starting point is 00:00:48 I am Dylan Hafer, and this is episode two of our Rony Rewind series. Today, we are talking about the Real Housewives of New York City, season one, episode two, The Hamptons. Last week, I kicked off this rewatch journey, and if you listen to that episode, if not, go back, listen to it now. But if you, if you listened, you'll recall, I was a little bit surprised at the slow start that we were getting with this group. In episode one, there was no interaction between the five housewives. And episode two, things are starting to click into place. We're getting a little bit of Luann and Jill.
Starting point is 00:01:26 We're getting a little bit of Jill and Ramona. You know, people are coming together. Connections are being made. But you know who's not making any connections thus far? Alex McCord and Simon Van Campen. They are content to spend their summer in St. Bart's. And, you know, we get a couple quick scenes this episode. But as of episode two, they could be on a completely different, you know,
Starting point is 00:01:55 multiversal plane from the rest of these women. And we would never know. they're just out there having a little bit of almost an erotic lunch in the Hamptons, not in the Hamptons, in St. Barts, obviously. But the energy between them is just so, oh, it's tough. So they've brought their au pair with them to St. Barts as you do, so they can have, you know, their private time together. And this seductive energy at this lunch that they're having together, they're like, oh, yes, you know, I love, to go shopping. Oh, yes. It's, it's so nice to be here together with you. And there's nobody else here. And because we're not in the Hamptons right now, we can do whatever we want, wherever we want, however we want. Is it right, baby? Oh my God. Their energy is just so much. And I'm really looking forward to next week, them being incorporated into the group a little bit more because I'm ready for the chaos. But meanwhile, the rest of the group, for the most part, is in the
Starting point is 00:03:04 Hamptons this week. Though Jill takes a quick detour to Martha's Vineyard on a private plane because she and Bobby are taking Allie to the holistic detox center. This is, oh, God, this storyline is so strange. I'm glad it's kind of resolved in episode two because they, you know, they show up on the private plane, off the golf cart, and we're in this detox center. Jill, of course, hates the word detox because when she tells her friends that Allie's going to a detox center, they think, God forbid, that she's, like, in rehab. So I guess it's a lot more palatable that you're just sending your daughter away to lose 11 pounds in eight days. But, so they arrive at this place. And there's this whiteboard of everything that they do at the detox center. And so I wrote down the list,
Starting point is 00:03:53 some of these things. Probiotics. Enzymes. Meta berry slash ageless. Green drink. Juicing. Reginic hair. Liver slash kidney herbs.
Starting point is 00:04:07 Antioxidants. Enzymes slash soup. Calm or S4. And aloe. And then the daily schedule is as follows. Massage. Colonic. Lymphatic RX.
Starting point is 00:04:21 Body wrap. Cellulite RX. Facial, ear coning, alpha detox. I know perhaps 60% of those words. I was about to Google what ear coning was, but then they showed us on the episode. It's when you take a long, skinny candlestick, and the candle is lit,
Starting point is 00:04:49 and you're holding the other end of the candle over the ear. Is this a thing people do? Like, I, I don't know. I mean, I guess, like, massage sounds nice. Maybe body wrap, facial, that could be relaxing, but ear conning. Colonic. The colonic is on the daily schedule. Are you doing a colonic every day for eight days?
Starting point is 00:05:19 What is in there to be expelled? all your drink all you're eating is green drink juicing some herbs and enzymes slash soup well also what is enzymes slash soup soup is a food enzymes is like a chemistry lesson i don't know i haven't taken a science class in many years but i'm not fully sold on this detox program but you know when Allie comes home, she has lost 11 pounds in eight days, and Jill is acting like she has, you know, gotten a new puppy for Christmas. She's like, come here, let me see. Oh my God. She's patting Allie down like it's a TSA check and she has something suspicious in her leggings. The whole conversation around this just is, oh, it's ripe for, you know, for picking apart.
Starting point is 00:06:21 So good, so good, so good. Everything you want for summer is at Nordstrom Rack stores now and up to 60% off. Stock up and save on the brands you love like Vince, Sam Edelman, Frame, and Free People. Join the Norty Club to unlock exclusive discounts, shop new arrivals first, and more. Plus, buy online and pick up at your favorite rack store for free. Great brands, great prices. That's why you rack. Girl, winter is so last season.
Starting point is 00:06:53 And now spring's got you looking at pictures of tank tops with hungry eyes. Your algorithm is feeding you cutoffs. You're thirsty for the sun on your shoulders. That perfect hang on the patio sundress. Those sandals you can wear all day and all night. And you've had enough of shopping from your couch. Done hoping it looks anything like the picture when you tear open that envelope? It's time for a little in-person spring treat.
Starting point is 00:07:16 It's time for a trip to Ross. Work your magic. You know, the Bobby and Allie relationship continues to be interesting. On the private plane, Jill is, you know, asking Bobby if he'll go school supply shopping with Ali when she comes back and he's like, I'll send her a driver so she can go school supply shopping. Like, Allie is like 15, 16? Is school supply shopping really like a family outing that is happening when you're 16 years old? I mean, I definitely remember when I was a kid and you would get the school supply list.
Starting point is 00:07:54 And my mom was, my mom was like one of those parents who would have the list. And she would be looking at the little like newspaper ads that would come for like Office Depot, Office Max, Target, whatever, and be like looking for when like, okay, mechanical pencils are on sale this day. Folders are on sale at this store. Like we would really like hunt the stuff down. I don't think that's what. what Jill and Bobby and Allie were doing for school supplies. I feel like she was going to the store and picking out whatever Lisa Frank folders she wanted,
Starting point is 00:08:25 not the cheap ones. But, you know, Jill wants Bobby and Allie to have a better relationship. And I guess school supply shopping is as good a place to start as any. The activities of the Hamptons, this episode are kind of funny to keep track of. There's a Masonie fashion show that Ramona and Jill are both at. there's an equestrian event, the Hampton's classic, that Ramona and Luan are at and the Jill shows up. There's this cooking party that Ramona has. Then there's the tennis day event match. It really is a tour of the Hamptons. And this is where the first real kind of housewifey drama
Starting point is 00:09:09 starts to take place. And I really enjoy this. So, you know, Luan, is definitely in a class of her own on this show. You know, she feels that she is a little bit of a higher social echelon than Ramona certainly and probably also Jill. So, you know, she's at the equestrian event, just as a supportive mother watching Victoria compete. And then Ramona shows up. And, you know, she's, she's all dolled up. She's wearing a big hat. She's wearing a dress. And she looks at, she thinks this is one of those big tent days where it's about the party. No, this is about the horses. Please, Ramona, please.
Starting point is 00:09:49 And then Ramona's having this cooking party. And it's like, you know, Ramona's blonde brigade of, you know, girlies that are always at the birthday luncheon and, you know, always at the Hamptons and the dinner. And Luanne is invited. And Luanne clearly does not really want to go. But she's like, oh, go for a drink. Because then, of course, you know, I have to get home and be with my husband because he's going to Europe tomorrow. All well and good. But Luann is, you know, she clearly, like, it stinks in there to her.
Starting point is 00:10:22 She doesn't want to be around these women. So she's like, yo, I'll go for a few minutes. But then, you know, she asks Ramona where Jill is. And Ramona says that she thinks Jill had to be in the city or something. I mean, it's immediately apparent that she didn't invite her. And then Ramona says that she didn't invite Jill because she felt like she invited. invited Jill, then she would have had to invite, you know, two or three other people to kind of make the circle good. This is nonsense. Ramona has no idea what she's saying. She didn't invite Jill because she doesn't seem to like Jill that much.
Starting point is 00:11:00 But then it's like we're still in this position where they clearly didn't have as much of a mandate in the early Housewives days to be treating this like a circle of friends, like a group of of women. because the way they are so freely just acknowledging like, yeah, we don't really know each other very well. Or like, met her a couple times. Or like, we don't really run in the same circle. I feel like on Housewives now, they've really tightened up kind of how these women are supposed to be talking about the group. Whereas back then, it was like the Wild West.
Starting point is 00:11:36 It's like, oh, yeah, I mean, like, I guess we're like sort of tennis friends, but, like, I wouldn't invite her to my house. it's kind of, it's kind of refreshing to hear how, how openly they're just kind of like not that close with each other. But of course, Jill finds out that she was not invited to this cooking party because she calls, she calls her friend Diane, who I guess the party is at her house. And Diane's like, oh, I met Ramona's cooking party. Here, I'll put her on the phone. And it's so awkward. And then Jill is like, well, I'm assuming Luanne wasn't invited, so let me call her. And then Luanne's like, oh, well, actually, I just left. So Jill is, Jill's livid. And you know what?

We also get to meet Jill's gay husband, Brad, which is just a moment in Housewives history that feels singular. You know, why would she not call him her gay husband? She does everything she does with Bobby, except, you know, 2008 was just so long ago. Bethany, similar to Alex McCourt, is kind of out on an island this episode until the very end. You know, she's trying to figure out how serious her relationship with Jason is. She's going to a charity event that she's donating a cooking class to the auction, so that's nice. We also see her at this business meeting with her friend Jake about potential opportunities for collaboration.
Starting point is 00:14:04 Her main career goal, she says, is to democratize health. I don't know how well she's doing with that, but I guess her podcast interviews with Rachel are doing fine. I decided I want to institute something for this little rewatch series. A Trump tally of how many times we are mentioning the Trump family, how many times they're referenced. And this scene brings us to two in the first two episodes because Bethany pulls out of her bag some cookies and she says, I brought the cookies to send to Melania. Sure. There's no additional context. But I'm sure that will not be the last time we are named.
Starting point is 00:14:42 dropping a Trump family member on this season. But, I mean, yeah, that brings us to this tennis day. And Jill, I mean, Jill says she wants to kill Ramona. She's really upset about this cooking party. And I think this, it's so clear that Jill has never once in her life changed because the level of upsetness that she is about this, We've seen it time and time and again. Even her recent interview with Bethany, where she's talking about, oh, I was just hurt, you know, it hurt.
Starting point is 00:15:19 I was sad. I was upset. I was angry. It's like she has the same set of feelings over and over and over and over and over and over again. And I, you know, you have to wonder, would she, would she feel this way if she just removed herself from reality TV? I have a feeling the answer is yes, because I think this is just truly who she is on or off camera. But so Jill is going to be playing, it's a doubles tennis match.
Starting point is 00:15:42 Jill's playing with Lou. Ramona is playing with her girlfriend Missy, who we see pop up over the years. Hey, Missy, how you doing? So Jill has invited Bethany to the tennis match. As far as I can tell, we haven't really learned how or if Jill and Bethany are friends other than this. She just kind of shows up along with, you know, a dozen other people that Jill has invited. But yeah, so Bethany's kind of a silent observer. It is funny, talking so much about Bethany over the last couple weeks, how much of a background player she is in these first couple episodes. Obviously, I know that changes as the seasons go on, but like after these couple episodes, like the main characters of this show are Jill and Ramona, and then Luanne, and then probably Bethany. I would say Alex is in last right now just because she has been in St. Bart's instead of the Hamptons, but I think that might start to change next week. But yeah, the tennis match, we actually, we see a lot of tennis. I was surprised how much we were following the play-by-play here. The strategy for Jill and Luann is just to keep hitting the ball
Starting point is 00:16:59 to Ramona, and she'll keep hitting it out. And it seems to be working. Missy is allegedly a better player, but she's, you know, not playing up to her level necessarily. Ramona is frustrated because Mario is kind of doing some backseat driving, telling her what to do. She tells him to shut up. One of my favorite moments is Luan going, if I ever spoke like that to the count, he would be out of town permanently. That, you know, that just tells you how healthy the relationship is, that if you're frustrated and tell them to shut up, that he would just leave and never come back. it sounds healthy. It sounds productive and like you're on an even playing field. And personally, you know, having no knowledge of what's to come in the future, I would say that marriage is going to last forever.
Starting point is 00:17:52 But anyway, Jill and Luann do end up winning the tennis match. And thank God, because otherwise, I think Jill might have, you know, burned down a building or something of that nature. But overall, you know, another good episode. I'm excited for the group to kind of be coming together a little bit more. And I mean, the thing about Ramona not inviting Jill to the cooking party, that is truly a great housewife storyline. And I'm hoping that we get more in the next few episodes. My two, my two nominees for Line of the episode were Bethany's mention of the cookies for Melania. I already mentioned that. So I think I'm going to give it to Jill when Ali returns from her detox center saying, what does it feel like? You don't have a belly anymore. Just, um, what a lovely thing to say.
