He also ranks this year’s class of freshman Real Housewives, from forgettable newbies to instant icons. From there, he recaps this week’s episode of RHOSLC, where Bronwyn got deep while Britani just tried to get attention. Hey everyone Welcome back to the Mention It All podcast And welcome to our final episode Of the year for 2024 We have gone on such a journey this year 145 episodes This is number 145 for the year which just feels a little bit cuckoo bananas.

I mean, I know we do three times a week, and we've missed a few here or there for holidays. We're taking off next week. So mathematically, it makes sense, but 145 times I have sat down to the microphone, sometimes with a great guest, sometimes all by myself, but always I have had you guys there listening,

giving us feedback, chiming in, you know, watching along with us. And it has been such a joy this year to bring you guys so much Bravo content. And Bravo has brought us so much to talk about. And so we are going to dive in today. And what better way to finish off the year than with another super entertaining episode of Real Housewives of Salt Lake City? These ladies have been doing it like no other at the beginning of the year, at the end of the year and much of the time in between. So it only feels fitting that we are going to have a little bit of a Salt Lake City recap for our final episode of the year. But before we get to that, I did a little bit of a mailbag, not too many questions, but some kind of like end of the year

ranking business. I wanted to get some people's opinions on things from this year and take that into account. So I'm going to be doing some Bravo highs and lows for the year of 2024. And also, somebody suggested this that I really liked. I'm going to be ranking our freshman. real housewives class from this year. There's about half a dozen ladies that are in that mix, and we're going to talk about it. First, before we get into that, some unfortunate news that we must discuss. And this is Karen Huger's DUI case. She quietly went to trial a little bit earlier this month. Obviously, on the season that's airing right now, it is post the actual incident, pre the legal proceedings sorting themselves out. So she has not been able to talk about it much on the show or has chosen to really not talk about it very much at all on the show. But it has still been going on and she went to court. And it did not go super well for her. She was found guilty. A jury found her guilty on seven of eight counts that were brought against her. That includes driving under the influence. A host of other things related to the car accident that she got into.

The one thing that she was not found guilty of is reckless driving. But really, I mean, when you get to seven of eight counts, there's not much silver lining there. So she is scheduled to be sentenced on January 29th. And because of the charges that she was convicted of, she faces up to two years in prison. Now, I am not a legal expert. It feels like it's been a while since I've had to trot out my hopefully obvious disclaimer of me not being elected. licensed attorney or an unlicensed attorney of any kind. I'm not even a Craig Conover kind of attorney. I don't know exactly what's going to happen here. I suppose no one does because that's why we have,

you know, sentencing by a judge. It does seem like this is a pretty rough outcome for Karen. Her attorney put out a statement. It's not very interesting, but they're, you know, heavily implying that they're going to appeal this decision. Who knows what will happen there? Who knows if Karen will get, you know, jail time, prison time. It does seem like an interesting choice though, given this outcome that she chose to go to court to go to trial in the first place because I don't know what she might have been offered in exchange for a guilty plea, but I have to imagine that it wasn't, it obviously wasn't appealing enough to her to plead guilty and forego the trial. I don't know whether that was

a point of personal pride. I don't know whether that was a point of personal pride. I don't know whether the offer that they gave her, maybe she would have had to, you know, accept some prison time, and she didn't want to do that without fighting in court first. We might never know, but that's, that's where we are right now. January 29th is when that sentencing is set. But the ickyer part of this, because obviously, you know, Karen made some really bad mistakes and his, you know, justice is, whatever. You guys, the body cam footage was released. And it's so bad.

Oh my God. So there's three video clips, at least what I've seen, it's three video clips. And there's one that's at the scene of the accident. And it's Karen and Ray is there too. And it's, Ray is like fumbling around in Karen's purse trying to find her driver's license. And then after like a minute of the video, it goes on for like three minutes.

The guy's like, oh, I think they already have the driver's license. And then he's telling her not to talk. Ray is telling Karen not to talk and he's trying to answer questions for her. It's tough. And then there's one where Karen's in the car. And then there's one where Karen, I guess, is at the police station, the, I don't know, central lockup. I don't know how that works. But Karen is not looking good in these.

videos. I mean, I don't want to, I'm not going to narrate the whole thing. You can go find them and watch them. Very, very obviously under the influence. At one point, I believe she refers to herself as Thomas Jefferson's concubine. She also says they call her the Grand Dom and she's like, Andy Cohen came up with that. And the police officer that's there is literally like, okay, okay. Man, I mean, we've known for a while that this situation was obviously not a good one and that Karen has, has, you know, made some poor choices. But seeing those videos, it just is like, it's a, it's a fucking bummer. Because, I don't know. It's, it's tough.

If you want to go watch the videos, they're out there. I have mixed feelings about them being out there. It is what it is. I'm curious to see what happens at her sentencing. I hope that she is, you know. So doing well, getting help if she needs it. It's not a good situation. But we will see what happens there.

And I think the thing in your responses that came through loud and clear,

not that I really needed to be told this by, you know, all of you, Real Housewives of Salt Lake City was the show of 2024. far in a way when people were talking about their favorite moments from the year, the things they enjoyed the most, the shows they loved the most, the castes, the people that they were most in sync with, Salt Lake City, just doing it on a level above everybody else right now. And that's not to say other shows haven't been great. I have a list of highs and lows that I'm excited to go through, but Salt Lake City really really has solidified. I think they had before this year, I feel like they were up there with the top tier

and that their best stuff was probably up with or a cut above some of the other shows. But this year, I feel like they have really solidified and kind of codified their status as like the franchise with the juice right now. and the fact that they started off the year so strong, that finale in Bermuda was truly one of the biggest housewives cultural moments in the sort of new era of housewives. Obviously, you have moments like the table flip and like some of the classic Beverly Hills, the limo fight, scary island. You know, Atlanta has so many moments in those. early seasons that are really like the Housewives cultural touchstones. But these days, I think it's harder to break through like that, to break through all the streaming services and all of the, all of the competition shows. And there's just so much noise happening all the time. And that

Bermuda finale really cut through all of it and receipts proof, timeline screenshots, fucking everything, that was a capital M moment. And that I think is, I think it's got to be the moment of 2024, but I think Salt Lake as a whole, just the show of 2024. If I was making a list of my top five moments of the year, I think Meredith's Bat Mitzvah is really a strong contender also. That episode, I know there, there sometimes tends to be like a recency bias, I think, where it's like, oh, like this was on two weeks ago, so I really remember it. It's fresh in my mind and it was so good. But looking back over the course of the year, the number of episodes that had that much going on and that many kind of like instant classic, hilarious, dramatic, iconic moments, Meredith's Bat Mitzvah is really an achievement of cinematic excellence in the Housewives genre. I am so curious whether we will ever see a Housewives show breakthrough.

in the Emmy conversation, because it's been interesting to see the last couple years post-Skandival, Vanderpump Rules has gotten nominated two years in a row in the sort of, there's like unstructured reality Emmy categories. So obviously there's competition categories, like traders won that this year. There's more structured ones where it'll be like, you know, love it or list it or, you know, flea market flip or whatever. I don't think that's getting nominated for Emmy. but the unstructured category below deck has gotten nominated. We see, you know, selling sunset has gotten nominated. And I'm like, if we're nominating, not to be rude, if we're nominating selling sunset for an Emmy,

put some respect on Salt Lake City's name. What do we have to do? How much do these ladies have to have to give to be recognized by the Academy of Television in arts and whatever it's called. The Academy. The Emmys. Give them a fucking Emmy. Lisa Barlow should have an Emmy on her mantle. Salt Lake City, though. Show of the year

with a bullet. My other highs of the year are, I would say like, nothing groundbreaking, but I think it's worth looking back. And the most recent one, which I have really been enjoying talking about week-to-week, is

this new Derreet Kemsley that we have unlocked. There has been, something has shifted. I mean, we know what that something is. She's a separated woman. Maybe not single, but separated. She's in a new phase of her life.

She gives less fucks than she ever has. She is out for blood with Kyle. She's calling Camille, see you next Tuesday, left and right. Stupid and fucking. That has just been really wonderful to see. We still have a good chunk of the Beverly Hills season left to go. So we will be talking about that into 2025, bringing that, you know, Doreet unleashed energy into the new year.

And I'm so thankful. One thing that I think we haven't necessarily talked a lot about on like a zoomed-out perspective, but I feel like this year was really sort of a reinvigoration for Summerhouse and Southern Charm. these two franchises are in their in their you know long-term era summer house season nine is it that we just got the trailer for which by the way i think they've still got it they're they're doing it good carl and lindsay are there there's a new there's a new girl there's a new guy we're working through Paige and Craig have their stuff. There's a lot of drama. It looks great.

But I think that Summer House and Southern Charm, they've both been around now for, you know, a decade or so, and the way that they have been able to sort of keep the wheels turning and find new ground to cover and still keep some of the DNA that set up the shows for success originally, but not feel like they're just sort of treading water and playing the hits for us. Because I think with Fanderpump Rules, sort of scandival aside, that was sort of what we were encountering, that 10 seasons in,

it was like, okay, what are we really doing here? Summerhouse and Southern Charm have somehow been able to avoid that. And I'm excited to see what they both have to come. But I think this year was a good year for both of them and really sort of like charted the course for how these shows can go into their, like, you know, teenage years, really with a lot of meat left on the bone. Likewise, another show that was really reinvigorated this year, Real Housewives of Orange County, and we've talked at length about this. I loved recapping this season. There was so much going on,

so many storylines to follow, so many people just kind of firing on all cylinders. And for a show in its 18th season, it was such a return to form in a way that I'm not sure if you asked me a couple years ago, I don't know if I would have been optimistic that O.C. had a season this good still inside of it. And I think that they put in the work, you know, sort of planting the seeds a couple years ago of bringing Heather back and then bringing Tamara back a season later,

keeping Shannon, keeping Gina and Emily really becoming central pieces to the show. They tried, you know, they had some false starts of casting new people over the last, you know, four or five seasons with, you know, a couple of blonde women named Jennifer, uh, Nuela. We had some, some people kind of coming and going. Liz Vargas, remember that name. But then they found Jen Padranti last season. They found Katie this season. Uh, they, they brought Alexis back for better or for worse. I don't think we need to spend a lot of time talking about Alexis. But they really, uh, they took the time and they invested the energy

in getting that show right again, and it was just so right this year. And now, I mean, I hope that they get back to filming, you know, pretty soon in the new year, but there's meat left on the bone for OC, which they had their best ratings in five years, I think, which is good for them, as they should. And my other high of the year was the great surprise,

the very pleasant surprise of the valley. Because about a year ago, I don't remember exactly when, but about a year ago, we had heard that this show was happening. We had gotten a first little teaser, and we were like, who is this for? Who was asking for this? Why are they forcing this upon us? This is going to be so annoying. Am I even going to watch it? Well, the results are in. And yes, we watched it. Yes, we loved it. Yes, we can't wait for it to be back for a second season. And truly like the vision that they had to take these like Vanderpump Rules scraps and these randos in the Valley and really put together a show that is so compelling and so, so fresh in a way. I think it feels different than anything else we have on the network right now in a way that I really enjoyed.

And I know a lot of you guys did too. So season two of the Valley coming 2025, one of my most anticipated things for the year. And I also had people submit their 2025 Bravo predictions. I'm going to save those for an episode in January when we come back. But lots of talk about the Valley. We have new seasons of Atlanta, Miami, who knows what's happening with some of our other franchises. And that's what's going to bring me to the lows of the year. Because the lows of the year, I think are frankly very obvious.

I don't have some shocker that I'm going to say where I'm going to say, oh, actually, actually I think that Salt Lake City is bad and you're all wrong. We're not here to do that. The lows of the year, we know. New Jersey, what the fuck is happening? It's been months. Andy said in an event this week that we might not have New Jersey news for like a year. Sir, what's happening?

What are we doing? If we're doing anything, why are we waiting so long? What's the thought process behind waiting another year? Do we think that Teresa and Melissa are just going to need the paycheck so bad that they're going to start to like each other again? I don't know, but the frustration of what has happened with New Jersey is high because it feels like something that could have been avoided. And I think if you look at, say, Real House Stories of Potomac, obviously they're not the exact same situation. And they haven't 100% fixed Potomac.

But they were able to rework some things after last season, which really didn't work. They were able to, I think, get some cast members to agree that they needed to put their differences aside and play nice with each other. I'm looking at you, Giselle and Wendy. and it has made a positive difference. It hasn't magically fixed everything, but we are in a better place. And I don't know if that is something

that would ever be possible in New Jersey, but it does feel like there could have been a different version of events and we wouldn't be in this place of now having just, frankly, no show. New York, I don't want to belabor the point. Also, a debacle. I don't know what to do with it.

We'll talk about it more in like 2025, questions, predictions, whatever, but it's not good, and we all know that. The other obvious low of the year, Real House House of Dubai, which has since been put on pause. I don't think it's coming off of pause. I don't think we will ever see most of these women again on Bravo. Two solid seasons, solid adjacent, whatever, they tried. I think they really had circumstances working against them. The fact that there was that two-year break between seasons, just as that's a franchise killer, honestly. how do you come back from that? But it wasn't perfect to side from that. And, you know, we'll see what happens in the future. I'm curious to see what happens with Real Houseways of London in 2025 if we can

even watch it in the U.S. I don't know if we have more sort of new franchises in the future. But Dubai gone and not quite forgotten yet, but it's getting there. my last low of the year was just that weird scheduling slump in like April May where we had zero housewives shows on the air looking back I know we did 145 episodes this year and I'm kind of like how what what did I talk about I'm sure they were great and if they weren't don't tell me No, but it was really crazy for like four weeks to have zero shows on the air, zero Housewives shows on the air. I really hope we don't find ourselves in that place again. But if we do, damn it, we will get through it together.

Overall, though, I think more highs than lows this year, I think the lows are pretty obvious. But the highs were just a lot of fun, a lot of good times, a lot of drama, a lot of chaos in the best way. And before we get into Salt Lake City, I'm just going to do that freshman Real Houseways ranking that I mentioned on the bottom. I feel like I'm Abby Lee Miller. On the bottom, page, our Dubai new housewife Talene. And I feel a little bad about this because I think Tallinn really tried on this season. And she got in the mix. She had drama.

She, you know, she seemed like a fun girl. It's just like you were a one-season housewife on a show that got put on pause. And the season that you had wasn't amazing. Talene, I hope you're well. We probably won't ever see you again. I'm sorry. Right above that, I have Bose. This is not really a ranking of Bose. We just don't have enough material to evaluate yet, but she shows promise. I'm excited to keep getting to know her, but that's where Bose is at for right now. Right above that, I have Raquel from New York and Stacey from Potomac, sort of neck and neck. Oh, God, I forgot to rank Kiarna. I think Kiarna is above Tallene, but below Bose. I'm not.

not loving Kiarna, but we'll see, we'll see, we'll see, we'll see, we'll see, don't get mad of me. Rick Hell and Stacey, I have ranked neck to neck. Of course, their first seasons are still airing, and I think where they are right now, both of them are interesting, and that is not nothing. They are giving us personal storyline in a way that I appreciate. They are working their way into the group, I think, fairly well. but they haven't quite had standout moments in terms of like, as I say, housewifery.

Raquel, I just talked about on yesterday's episode, is not really giving us any drama yet. And Stacey, I think, is quite involved in storylines this season, but mostly because we can't stop talking about how she and her man, T.J. aren't having sex. and that's interesting in a way, but I need her to kind of branch out in terms of the topics that we're hearing about. And so I have faith, or I have hope that Stacey will give us more. Raquel, I don't really know

because I don't really know where New York is going. If we get to the end of the season, and it still feels like Raquel has not sort of dipped her toes into any dramatic waters, she might be moving down my rankings. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, my dear, but I need a little more. I need a little more than artsiness and a cool fiancé. I don't know.

Right above that, I have Katie Janella from O.C., and I think that Katie did not have a perfect first season, but I think that she had a really strong first season, mostly because she seemed determined to really get into the mix. and did she always go about that in the exact right way? No, she did not. She made some messes along the way. She handled some things maybe a little poorly, but she stuck with it. And even more than that, she held Heather DeBrow's feet to the fire in a way that very few people, even seasoned housewives, have not really shown much interest in giving Heather a run for her money. And Katie did that pretty much right off the bat. And she didn't really stop.

stop throughout the season. And so I don't know where she goes from there. I was impressed with what I saw, even if she wasn't like my personal favorite. And then at the top, I think this will come as no surprise. And it dovetails nicely into what we're going to talk about. Bronwyn. Brondwin, Newport, Salt Lake City. She's the new housewife of the year. And I think it helps that she is on the franchise of the year. So she is getting a lot of attention just because of the show she's on. But the thing is, with this strong of a cast, it would be very easy for a new person to join the group and to kind of just fade right into the background. If you're not creating those moments for yourself and creating those opportunities for conflict, for storyline, for, for personality, for us getting to know you,

all of a sudden, 12 episodes go by and you don't feel that important to the puzzle. Bronman, on the contrary, has made herself, I think, a really integral part of the show very quickly on a show where everybody else is already operating at a high level. So if you're in a room with Angie and Lisa and Heather and Mary and you're not really bringing it, you're not going to stand out. You're not going to have a great time. And I know that Brittany is not a full-time housewife, so I didn't include her in my ranking. But I think that's where Brittany is struggling a little bit this season, that it feels like she is, she's hungry for those moments, but they're not coming to her quite as naturally. And that's where we end up with three different times throughout the season. You got to do the ding, ding, ding, ding.

I have an announcement. What about me? Why isn't everybody excited that I spent time with my daughter? And I appreciate that she's trying, but it's not landing. quite as strongly as Bronwyn. Without further ado, I mean, I guess we should just, we're already talking about Salt Lake City. So I'll just keep talking about Salt Lake City.

We are still in Mexico. Mary shows up this episode after sharing that Robert Jr. is going to a treatment facility out of state, like an inpatient connoissell set up. Good for him, good for her. They are working through this. And I have the,

utmost respect for how Mary is handling this on the show. And it seems like off the show as well. But I'm also really glad that she made it to Mexico. Because you got to have everybody on the trip. And I think, you know, I can't even fathom having to juggle participating in a show like this while you have something like that going on in your real, very real life. But I really respect that Mary is trying and doing her best. And I think it's it's a little complicated too that so far she's only chosen to tell Angie the reality of what's going on. And so when she shows up in Mexico and Meredith and Lisa are like, oh my God, why weren't you here yesterday? Like, we missed you. Mary's in a little bit of a tough spot because she kind of she kind of just tells them nothing.

And I think if she doesn't feel like it's the right time to tell the other women what's going on with her son, more power to her. But also it's like, oh, God, that's tough then. Because then it's like you're, it's a weird dynamic. I don't know. But the moment when she and Angie see each other for the first time in Mexico is truly like, I like, I almost shed a tear. because it's it's so wild that like Angie and Mary are both kind of like they present as ridiculous people. The visuals, the fashion, the looks, the things that come out of their mouths sometimes, it's like, are you real? And even last season, they didn't like each other or Mary didn't like Angie.

Remember in Palm Springs? Who is Angie? And so the fact that they've come so far and forged this really. personal bond with each other. And Mary feeling like Angie is such a, really like a sister to her in this challenging time that she's going through. It just is, it's beautiful to see. I love to see it. And I'm glad that they have each other. And I hope, I hope that their friendship stays that way because that would be tough. To see people go through something like that and really rely on each other, I hope that they're able to maintain that.

and we have a boat day. And of course, anytime housewives are on a boat, things are going to go wrong. And this is when, of course, Lisa's talking about how much better Henry is doing. And Brittany brings up,

she's like, I talked about my daughter last night. Why does nobody care about that? And look, I get where Brittany is coming from. I get that it feels like she's not getting that kind of attentiveness from the group.

But to do it in the way where it's like taking away from Lisa's moment, it's not going to land. It's not going to go well for you. It's just not. And I love Bronwyn asking, this is crazy. Bronwyn asking her point blank,

if she actually cares about seeing her daughter, or if she just wants to have an announcement to make, to have a moment, oh my God. Like, you can't say that. Bronwyn, that's so bad. And then Brittany calls Bronwyn a bitch, and Bronwyn's just like, yeah,

but then all of a sudden it's about Bronwyn and Lisa again because Lisa doesn't stick up for Bronwyn when Brittany calls her a bitch. And I do feel like I'm, I'm, I think my patience is running a slight tiny bit thin with the Bronwyn needing Lisa to care about her because I just feel like at a certain point, it should be obvious to Bronwyn that Lisa just doesn't care that much about her. And I'm not saying it shouldn't hurt. I'm not saying that she shouldn't be upset about it or frustrated by it or angry. But it's like when at a certain point, when someone shows you who they are or tells you who they are, believe them. Is that like Maya Angelou? I think that's a quote that somebody said.

I don't know. It just, it feels like one of those things where it's like, I hope that by the end of this season at least, Bronwyn doesn't keep kind of like putting her hand in the, in the tiger cage that is Lisa Barlow. Because you're going to get hurt every time and she already got attacked by a dog. She doesn't need any more scrapes and scratches and bruises. Todd's not even coming to the ER. Okay, so the Todd thing. We've obviously gotten. some inklings and some questions and things like that about about their dynamic. And Bronwyn on the boat opens up and says that they had an infidelity thing. And everybody is surprised, including Lisa, who is Bronwyn's closest friend in the group allegedly. And she says that this was a few years ago

and that she found out about it because Gwen saw Todd texting another woman on the iPad, which is just like, not texting on the iPad. Who are you? Rick Hilton? Don't, okay, this is like rule number one. Don't text the mistress on the iPad. I think there was a, I think there was like a rapper that got caught cheating because he was texting the mistress on the iPad.

I'm looking this up. I don't know. Maybe not. There was somebody famous where they found out that they were cheating because they were getting the notifications on the iPod. iPad and then they saw it. This is not a good story. I don't know. I'll get back to that later. But it's interesting that nobody knows about this. And Bronwyn is really opening up now about feeling like she is alone and not feeling like she has the support that she needs and that she thought

when she joined this group when Lisa brought her in, she would be meeting women who would make her feel like she was, you know, seen and supported, and now she doesn't know if that's true. And the fact that Lisa's response to this is like, oh my God, you're so much more relatable now. Yay. Lisa. Lisa, no. It's so awkward because it's just like, I do feel like Lisa doesn't care that much about Bronwyn. She doesn't want Bronwyn to be her enemy.

And I think that's where Lisa kind of struggles is that she's so adamant that she's a good friend. She's so adamant that she's sticking up for Bronwyn, that she's been a good friend to Angie, that she's, you know, always there for Meredith. She, Lisa, I think, believes her own narrative to her core. But a lot of the time, I think the evidence doesn't really support that. that it's like if if week after week there are these situations where Bronwyn doesn't feel supported by you at a certain point you have to look in the mirror and say maybe I am not being as supportive of a friend as I'm saying I am or as maybe I even really think that I am and so I think that Lisa I mean Lisa's iconic on the show she she gives us so much but like I get why

these women feel this way about her. I'll cut to the last dinner. We got just one more, one more really great moment from Brittany, great in quotation marks. When Brittany asks Meredith fully across from the opposite end diagonal of the table, she asks Meredith if she's okay because she heard her crying last night. And this is just like textbook the worst way to bring something up.

First of all, it's Meredith Marks. If you've known Meredith Marks for five minutes, you know that she is not going to appreciate this. And then when we find out when Bronwyn is like, oh, yeah, like actually everybody was talking about this. So the game of telephone of, and I love that they have footage of every single one of these interactions, of Britney telling Heather that Meredith was crying and throwing up. And then Heather telling Angie that Meredith was crying and vomiting. And then Angie telling Bronwyn that Meredith was, quote, barfing all over the place. Oh, oh, oh, oh, God. This is bad.

And so, of course, Meredith is upset. This isn't going to win Brittany any points with the group. And that, I think, is that's sort of like, that cuts to, like, the real issue that Britney is encountering is that, like, she's not going about any of these situations in the right way. She's getting a good amount of screen time. She's involved in the group. But every way that she's handling, every given situation, just isn't the way that's going to pay off for her. It might get her more screen time in the episode, but if she actually wants to feel like she's an important part of this group that's seen and heard and valued and understood and championed and clapped for,

she's kind of handling everything wrong. And so I'm curious, I'm really wondering, they've taped their reunion now. Brittany, we know is at the reunion. I'm like, at the end of the reunion, is Brittany even going to feel like a relevant member of this group? Because I could see it going either way, but I really don't know what's going to happen now. She's having a lot of fun making TikToks, and I love that for her. If TikTok goes away next month, Brittany is going to have a lot of time on her hands. But yeah, I mean, another great episode.

Lisa ends up leaving the table because of Bronwyn and Angie, I don't know, ganging up on her, in her opinion, probably. But that's where we leave this year, this year of Bravo, this amazing, chaotic, super fun, super great year of Bravo and of mentioned it all.
