Starting point is 00:00:45 Hey, everyone. Welcome back to the Mention at All podcast. I am Dylan Hafer, and by popular demand, here I am coming to you solo on a Friday. We are back with these bonus episodes, and we are going to be talking about Southern Charm. Ooh, you guys told me loud and clear that you wanted these episodes. So here I am, and I have to say, we are two episodes into this season of Southern Charm. And it is delivering. Every year, I feel like I'm like, I don't know, Southern Charm, are we over this?
Starting point is 00:01:18 Are these people going to be worth caring about anymore? And this season, there's drama, there's mess, there's chaos, and I'm here for it. coming into this episode, we see on our little previously on, Naomi is the new narrator this season. This was, you know, the classic Cameron job. Naomi, big shoes to fill. I'm here for it. I think. We'll see. But, you know, we're coming off of last week's 30th birthday party for Catherine, which was, how do I put this politely? A fucking mess. Really mostly because of Catherine's own behavior. But of course, the guys also got into it. We see Shep talking to Taylor. Taylor's wearing a trop hop shirt. Love the cross-promotion. And, you know, Shep thought that Craig would be a little more
Starting point is 00:02:09 apologetic, a little more, you know, open coming into that party. But instead, he was just deflecting. And everyone in this cast seems to think that Craig and Naomi aren't as over each other as they claim to be. And I don't know where I fall on that yet. I mean, I want to believe what. I want to believe what they're telling us, but also there clearly is a lot of history there. But then the very next scene we see is Paige and Craig in bed. Page is saying that she was talking to Naomi at the party, and while it's not the most comfortable interaction, there's no big problem. Craig says there's nothing unsettling in the air. Page thinks it would be more of a red flag if Craig and Naomi didn't get along. And I don't, this is a weird thing to me. I realize that we're on a TV show,
Starting point is 00:02:56 so it works out well for the TV show if exes can coexist. But like in real life, I don't think it's a red flag to not speak to your ex or to not like your ex. It's like, you know, maybe I don't want them to like burn in a fire, but like I don't have to want to chat with my ex at a birthday party. I feel like that's one of those reality TV things where it's like we have to pretend that it's super normal to be. like coexisting with your ex, when in reality, like, I don't think a very high percentage of people are really still, like, loving, running into their ex at a birthday party, you know? I mean, they've been together already. Obviously, they have their thing in Vegas, but, you know, they're seeing each other at Catherine's party, and then they're seeing each other at Naomi's own party.
Starting point is 00:03:46 It's like, it's very messy, and that's just not, that's not the way real life works. But of course, we are on TV. But honestly, Craig and Naomi seem to be getting along better than, you know, one of the actual couples in the cast, which is Caleb and Catherine. This is Caleb's second episode on the show, and somehow I am already way more Team Caleb than Team Catherine. I guess Caleb is like in the cast this season. It's a little murky here who's like a main player and who's kind of just around. But we see Caleb in the car. He's talking to his sweet, sweet mother, who apparently was like friends with Catherine way back when because they were like neighbors or she knew his cousin or I don't know. I can't keep up.
Starting point is 00:04:26 with all the like familial ties. Later in the episode, we meet Shep's cousin Marcy. And I'm like, okay, I don't want to hear about your like weird secret country club of old money people in Florida. Like that sounds like a bad news to me. But alas, back to Caleb. So Caleb and Catherine got into it and we see, weirdly we only see a flashback of this fight. I don't know, you know, maybe some of the footage got like tarnished or something so they couldn't show the whole scene. but they're arguing the day after Catherine's birthday party because Catherine says she was triggered by Caleb telling her that Vanita wanted to talk because it made her feel like Caleb was on Vanita's team instead of Catherine's and to that I just have to say get a fucking grip
Starting point is 00:05:15 Catherine please I don't understand why she has this mindset of like anybody that wants to try and help me get along with other people in this group is like my worst enemy. Like, I just, it doesn't make sense to me. And I, Catherine is one of those people where obviously we have been through many, many, many and up and then down with her. And I have found her very entertaining for a lot of the show. I've liked her. I've felt sympathy for her at multiple points. But this season, so far, she just seems to be in this weird.
Starting point is 00:05:52 bad energy place of like not wanting to get along with anyone, not wanting to sort of play along with anyone. Obviously the first episode hinged on her birthday party, but I feel like we haven't really, she's not really like participating in the way that everyone else is of just kind of like moving the story along. She just seems kind of miserable. And the fact that Caleb, who lets be real, is only on the show because he's dating Kathy. The fact that even he is like, babe, what the, what's going on? Why are you so miserable? Why do you hate everyone?
Starting point is 00:06:30 I just want to like make a friend or two. It's like, it's weird. It's bad vibes. I'm not, I'm not, I'm not feeling Catherine this season. And, you know, that's probably not a hot take, but like, woof. These people, these fucking people. I don't even know. Austin calls Leva.
Starting point is 00:06:49 They're talking about Olivia. the whole Austin and Olivia thing. I don't know about that. First of all, she looks just like Madison. The blondes on this show. There's a moment at Naomi's party where Olivia and Taylor and Marcy are all talking to each other.
Starting point is 00:07:11 And then Madison is off to the side. And I'm like, how did we wind up here? there all of these women look the exact fucking same Olivia Marcy and Taylor we all we like just met all of them I know Taylor was on last season but like she wasn't like on last season I'm like if somebody dye your hair we just kicked a chair I was so frustrated we need a redhead no fuck Catherine god damn I don't know we just need we need somebody with like a different visual happening I you know I love Leva
Starting point is 00:07:47 I love Vanita but like when the blondes are all together It's too much for my brain to process. But back to Olivia and Austin's potential blossoming relationship, I just feel like Olivia seems like a very nice lady, kind of. But like, I feel like Austin is living in this, like, fantasy land of, oh, like, I might, she's marriage material, she's wife material, and she's tall, and she gets my sense of humor. and I just don't see this happening. I see them having a lot of fun together,
Starting point is 00:08:24 maybe dating for a little bit, but I feel like Austin needs to take like a year or two and kind of like get his shit together and then like not date someone whose parents are funding Leva's restaurants. Like it's just not giving me like great energy. And I don't, I don't know. We do get a little more particular. Patricia in this episode, Dammy calls her.
Starting point is 00:08:50 She's planning a fresh start party. And I love hearing Patricia just like talk shit about Catherine. Because Patricia, she tells us, and we've seen it over the years, she really has tried with Catherine. You know, at one point, they kind of had a little thing going a couple seasons ago. Like, they were on a better track. But Patricia is like fully done now. She says that Catherine has led an inelegant life, which is like the classiest way to say that somebody's a fucking disaster. And I really appreciate that.
Starting point is 00:09:20 But, you know, she's done. Patricia is one of those people where it's like, she's not going to scream at you. She's not going to call you names. But, like, she's good on Catherine. She's done with that. And I, I, it's the right choice. Austin and Olivia have their double date with Shep and Taylor, you know. These double date scenes, they're always at some, like, brewery outside where you're, like,
Starting point is 00:09:44 sitting at a picnic table and, like, the ground is woodchips. and it's like, I guess you're like drinking a, that's like where they sell trop hop. And it just feels like it's probably humid and you would rather be sitting inside where there's like air conditioning and a fan. But probably the like sound and lighting is better for filming outside. I feel like that's where like all of the, that's where all of the like one-on-one scenes happen on Southern Charm. I'm like, how many like outdoor picnic table breweries are there in Charleston? because I feel like we have to be running out at this point. Or maybe they always film at the same one.
Starting point is 00:10:21 If you're like a Charleston frequenter, let me know if there's like one place they always go to. I always see everybody I know goes to Charleston for like bachelor at parties and they're like, oh my God, like we saw Shep out. And I'm like, yeah, because there's probably like three bars that they go to. I don't know. Why am I talking about Charleston? Basically, everyone's just saying, talking about Craig and Naomi. They don't think they're fully over each other.
Starting point is 00:10:42 Austin doesn't think Craig told Paige the whole story about what happened in Vegas and then afterward, Austin is really, like, just in the mood to talk shit about Craig. And I, I'm, like, curious to see where this goes this season because, like, it has to either erupt or at some point or Austin is just going to, like, let it go. And I don't know, I don't know what's going to happen. But anyway, the whole episode leads up to Naomi's party. Unfortunately, John Pringle is there. John Pringle, just to me, like the least, just like the least captivating person I can imagine.
Starting point is 00:11:22 He has big, like, this fucking guy energy. You know, and it's like, oh, this fucking guy. Or like, this fucking guy, really? Again, Craig is, like, recounting his relationship with Naomi in the car to John Pringle. And I'm like, why are we wasting our time on this? We all saw it. We don't need to watch you tell John Pringle. The fact that John Pringle and Madison basically have like the same amount of screen time this season is an insult.
Starting point is 00:11:48 It's an insult to me. It's an insult to Madison. It's an insult to all of you. Frankly, it's an insult to reality television because he simply does not deserve. But unfortunately, you know, he's around. As is Madison, as is Shep's cousin Marcy, as is Madison Simon, the like tan brunette Madison that we met last. year. There's a lot of, a lot of people at this party. Everyone's around except Catherine. No invite for her. Probably smart. Everybody's like mixing and mingling and Craig and Naomi are talking
Starting point is 00:12:21 and she tells him not to chew his ice and Craig thinks Naomi isn't over him and who the fuck knows. Marcy and Taylor are talking to Olivia about Austin. It's like, well, he's tall and he's funny. And it's like, oh, God. Austin and Craig are talking to Madison. I love, Madison as a friend of is kind of perfect because she like flits in and flits out and just like drops her little comments. She's being kind of messy about Naomi and you know why Craig and Naomi are talking. And Madison just sums up this entire fucking show when she says, y'all seem a little toxic. Like, yeah, that's that's the whole thing. You included Madison, babe, y'all seem a little toxic.
Starting point is 00:13:06 That's like, that's the thesis statement of Southern Charm is just, y'all see. seem a little toxic. So good, so good, so good. Starting point is 00:13:37 That's why you rack. The wildest scene of the episode happens when all the women, kind of go inside at this party. And Patricia is there. And she's kind of asking about what happened, what happened at Catherine's birthday? And weirdly, little Miss Olivia pops up and is all of a sudden, like, Catherine's, you know, like, understudy puppet replacement and is, like,
Starting point is 00:14:07 speaking up to Naomi about, like, well, you know, why did you even go to the party? if you weren't going to go with an open mind. Like, why would you even be there? Because Catherine just, like, wanted to talk to you. And you, like, weren't open at all. And Naomi's like, I mean, I just went because I was invited and it was like an olive branch. And it seemed like the good thing to do. And she's like, no, no, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:14:26 But why did you even go? Like, you weren't open. Like, what was the, like, why would you be there? It was so weird because I guess Olivia and Catherine, like, know, each other. I can't keep track of, like, who met each other in Charleston when. But I guess they know each other. But, you know, Olivia, like, just came on this.
Starting point is 00:14:44 scene and really as viewers, like, we only know her as like Austin's maybe new love interest. And so then the fact that she's like jumping in to defend Catherine when like Catherine was in rare form at that birthday party, like she did not, she does not, her behavior does not need to be defended. And the Vanita's like, I mean, I didn't need to go to that party because Catherine's a fucking racist, but like I went because it seemed like the nice thing to do. Like I don't, I don't know. Like, I don't, like, I don't, like, I don't know. Like, I just, it's, like, Olivia being Catherine's mouthpiece is, like,
Starting point is 00:15:22 such a strange vibe to me. Because I also feel like, if you asked Catherine about Olivia, Catherine would be, like, which one? Oh, yeah. Like, I guess, I guess we kind of know each other. Like, I fully don't know that Catherine would, like, be able to pick Olivia out of a lineup. Maybe they're BFFs, but, like, I don't know that. It gives me the vibe of, like,
Starting point is 00:15:44 Olivia wants to be on the show, and she knows that the Austin thing is kind of like going to be a hit or miss of whether it goes anywhere. So she's like, not only will I be Austin's kind of maybe new girlfriend, but I'll also be like the Catherine defender because frankly, nobody else is doing it. And so I guess there's like an opening for that. But I'm like, I just don't, I can't imagine that Catherine would stick up for. Olivia anywhere close to what she was doing in this episode. And then, of course, she pulls the bullshit where she's like, I'm not on, I'm not choosing a side. I'm not on anyone's team. I'm just trying, if anyone isn't there and they're getting talked about when they're not there to defend themselves like they deserves. And it's like, that's what being on somebody's side is. If you're
Starting point is 00:16:32 sticking up for them and defending them when they're not even there, you're on their side, babe. That's how that's how an argument works. It's fine. Just fucking own it. Own it, baby. You know, she calls Naomi Regina George, which I do think is pretty funny. Vanita goes out and apologizes to her. That was nice. I feel like Vanita is, I like Vanita. Like, I think she seems like a really cool person. I would like to hang out with her, like, in real life. I'm curious to see as the season progresses, like, how and when she chooses to get involved in the drama, because I'd like to see a little more of that from her. But overall, like, Vanita has very good energy to me. And so I'm, like, I'm a fan. I'm curious to see kind of like how her and
Starting point is 00:17:14 and Leva sort of like continue to blossom on the show. But yeah, then there's this, I don't know, there's just this like weird conversation with Leva and Austin and they talk to Naomi and they say that Craig was like flippant and that saying she was clingy after they fucked in Vegas and then Naomi talks to Craig and he's like, I didn't say that. And I feel like Craig and Naomi just need to like separate for a second. If they're not going to get back together and we know that Craig is like fully with page it's like we don't need this conversation to happen every episode.
Starting point is 00:17:48 And I think it would be productive for it not to happen every episode. But yeah, I mean, that's all she wrote for Southern Charm. I hope everyone has a great holiday weekend. I hope Lisa Rina stays off Instagram stories. Or if she does, I hope that she has the balls to not delete something, 10 minutes after she posts it.
