Starting point is 00:00:00 you're listening to mess let's go let's go hello let's go let's go let's go can we go can we start okay we're good to go yes it's been a lot of talking what they talk about oh i was just trying to start our show how beyonce started what they talk about yeah it's been a lot of talk What they talking about? They talking about mess. Yes, yes, we are. Yeah, so how are you feeling in a post-Fiancee Cowboy Carter world? I see you got that hat on.
Starting point is 00:00:37 It made me want to be better. That's why I was like, hey, I can't come out of here not drinking water, not being active, not working out. Because seeing her on stage for three hours, bitch, three hours. I mean, we've been waiting for this moment. And I will not use the reference Waiting for tonight I'm not going to do that
Starting point is 00:01:00 Because I wanted to You got the glasses on Now when you said Waiting for this moment I started thinking Kelly Clarkson Some people wait a lifetime For a moment like this
Starting point is 00:01:09 Oh that is a good one So we did go different places Both light Both light Now show the people This heavy ass water bottle That you got So I'm starting
Starting point is 00:01:17 75 hard Or whatever It is Intense Oh my god Yeah Oh, my God. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:01:31 And you know what? You would drag me every time because you were like, you don't drink water. Look at how dehydrated you are. And now I have to drink a gallon of water a day. But a gallon is so much. It's too much. I think I'm drowning. But, yeah, I drink this.
Starting point is 00:01:43 I have to drink a gallon of water. I have to work out twice a day, 45 minutes, one in the gym and then one outside. So it could be, you know, biking, walking, whatever, talking shit. Okay, yeah, that counts. That doesn't work out. That doesn't work out. Rub your mouth. Okay.
Starting point is 00:01:58 And I had to give up stuff, like, to have a diet. So, you know, I stopped the caffeine, the sugar, the juices, the sodas, no Red Bull, and cutting down on dairy, fried food. So it's just like— No cheese? I think I'm going to do a little bit of it, but not—you know I'm a dairy queen. I'm cutting most of it out. Dang, no more Shark Coochie boards for you.
Starting point is 00:02:23 That is wild You know I went for a rent today Because of you And my body does hurt But it looks so good Yeah but Look at these muscles
Starting point is 00:02:35 The muscles is paper mache Girl But I was on the phone With my mom Anyway I was talking to my mom About your hard 75 today and I googled it
Starting point is 00:02:54 because she was like what's that and I told her what it was I told her you have to drink a gallon of water every day and she was like she's gonna drown
Starting point is 00:03:00 and I was like see even mom said that she's gonna she said a gallon of water I said instead it gets up at 8 and she finishes by midnight
Starting point is 00:03:08 she has that many hours to drink water and my mom said okay and I told her what you have to read 10 pages
Starting point is 00:03:17 you gotta blah blah blah and she said oh I can do that so my mom is gonna do a hard 75 or whatever as well. And I'm going to do a mild 75
Starting point is 00:03:26 with you. Look at that! I got a book in my purse. I read five pages on the train. Oh my God, we're doing it! We're doing it. You see what Beyonce does? Girl. She's really getting us together. I mean, we were in the zone the whole show. And you know we have ADHD.
Starting point is 00:03:42 Yeah, didn't get up to pee, didn't get up to get no snacks. I was like, I'm going to sit here while she's here. I don't want to miss anything. I'm trying to get my money's worth won. No, let's talk about it. Okay, that's the mess, how much we pay. But I'm actually unsure how much we pay.
Starting point is 00:04:00 Because it took me so long to, like, Venmo her the money. And I think I included other things that I owed Amina money for. So it's unclear what we paid. But I don't think it was, like, we didn't spend, like, $2,000. Like, we wasn't, we weren't in the saloon with her. But I will say the people who are right up front, they, every dollar they spent is worth it. Because you get to see the contour of her face. You see her skin up close.
Starting point is 00:04:27 You probably could smell her. Yes. And if I can actually do it again, like go to her concert, I would love to be that close. Because you're just getting all of her energy, too. Okay, so you're going to be in Blue Ivy's lap? I want to be roomy. I want to be running around doing whatever the hell I want. So what's the budget then for the next time?
Starting point is 00:04:51 I think people were paying like $2,000, right? But also we were realizing that people got their tickets late and they were paying less and still getting really good seats, too. Yeah. I mean, our seats were real cute. She drove over us in her car. That was fun. You should put that in the dump. That was cute.
Starting point is 00:05:11 Because I literally have a video of the bottom of the car. Screaming. I was like, hey, Beyonce! Now, I've never been beehive. I've never been, you know, one of these people that like stands for. Really, any artist. But seeing Beyonce live has made me appreciate how good her visuals are. And now I want to watch every concert.
Starting point is 00:05:31 I want to see every video. I'm in the middle of Lemonade right now. I'm watching that. And now, did she ever come out and say Jay-Z cheated on her? Or we just watched that and we all just said she's talking about him. Yeah. He did it. Becky with the good hair.
Starting point is 00:05:45 Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But I'm just saying like. She never was. Right. I mean, there is a song where she takes her wedding ring off and she throws it at the camera so i think that maybe is what makes it feel like it's real real but um i don't know and solange whooped his ass in the elevator what else could that have been you know i'm saying like
Starting point is 00:06:03 i'm not kicking ass for a good sis unless you hurt her you know i'm saying like if somebody hurt you i can't fight but i'll learn i'll learn like oh you'll train the all the rage will come out and i will John Wick if I have to oh yes I'm putting on a record oh write that down that's the show that we've the movie that's the movie we've been trying to shoot I get hurt
Starting point is 00:06:27 enough you know Jennifer Lopez style and you train for how long do you need to train to be able to beat up the person who hurts me I have to work on my core first so I'm gonna say at least three months three months yes three months cause then I gotta learn how to hold a gun you know I'm
Starting point is 00:06:44 How long did Michael B. Jordan train for Creed? Because that's how long I feel like Sidney's going to have to train for. I think he already just knew it. Like, hey, I don't really care about him. But I will say, visually, that's what a man is supposed to look like. Bring back men. Bring back our men. Our men.
Starting point is 00:07:05 Well, y'all's men. That ain't mine, but yes. I love that you don't care about him, but that's the blueprint for what a man should be. Yes, the muscles, the mustache, the skin, you know, he smells good. But now this is mess. This is an exclusive. Yes, he's not tall. Right.
Starting point is 00:07:23 Now, how tall is he? Because I saw him in a David Uriman ad. Producer. And I can't tell how tall he is. I feel like he's 5'9". That means 5'8". I think he's 5'10". He's not 6?
Starting point is 00:07:37 It feels like he should be 6. He's 6. If it says he's 6, that means he's 5'10". He's 5'10". they're lying they're lying because I've seen him up against with another woman
Starting point is 00:07:46 and I'm like ah it's not given to all 5'10 is a really amazing height for a man to be I just want to I just want to say that on the record right right right
Starting point is 00:07:54 it's actually one of the top heights that a man can be it sounds like you're 5'10 I'm just saying what I've heard what I've read in the trades is that they're looking
Starting point is 00:08:01 for 5'10 men that's what they're saying across Hollywood and various other industries 5'10 men is that so George I keep reading that I thought all the girls
Starting point is 00:08:10 wanted 6'5 blue eyes finance 6-5 blue eyes I thought the girls wanted 6-6-6 sorry I'm not allowed
Starting point is 00:08:19 to talk technically no well you did step in it is pride month it is mess this is your time get on in
Starting point is 00:08:27 I mean it is first you're saying bring back real men and then I'm our men bring back our men and by our men it's Marie's men
Starting point is 00:08:35 do you think Michael B. Jordan's clothing is too tight oh not you calling him Dominican Not to call him gay I did not
Starting point is 00:08:44 I know You don't have a European cut As we know Tight is now straight And baggy is now gay It used to be Tight was gay Baggy was straight
Starting point is 00:08:52 And so Like to me Straight Like straight I don't want to say West Village But like you know Straight works in Midtown guy Is now skinny khaki
Starting point is 00:09:03 Skinny khaki Too tight polo I don't even look at them In Midtown I know we are working in Midtown But I don't even know What they look like Okay, wait, should we?
Starting point is 00:09:11 Yeah, we might as well bring the guest in. Bring him in. He is a delight. He's been on Unofficial Expert. One of the hosts of Stradio Lab. And didn't you just film your special too? I did. Oh my God, yes.
Starting point is 00:09:25 We're happy to have him. George Tavares is in the building. Hi. And I just want to say, I'm so empowered that I'm not even going to apologize for being 15 minutes late. Wow. And actually, that's really revolutionary that I'm not.
Starting point is 00:09:40 Sorry? I want you both to apologize for being on time oh I was late she was late how late are we talking you were 10 minutes late I was 15 minutes late I got here like 20 minutes late oh you had a different call time than me
Starting point is 00:09:55 oh well that's because we be late right right right anyway whatever it is what it is but I know you're going to text us tonight like sorry I was late I already know don't feel bad if you know us that is our brand and so yeah but can i tell you something you've
Starting point is 00:10:13 always said that's your brand both of you recently it hasn't been i've been socially with both of you recently and you've both been on time you were on time to dinner you were on time when you did the pod you were also on time recently i can't remember but there was something else i might have got a different call time that's why i was telling you you are both it's like the opposite of someone it's like you acts you're getting like a better reputation that's ruining your old reputation wait a minute wait wait what do you say i gotta turn my clock back forward marie was on time where it was definitely on time when she did radio lab you when we got dinner i think you were there before matthew and me yeah 30 minutes early 30 minutes yeah i was just sydney was
Starting point is 00:10:52 sitting there reading the sunday times and she said have you heard about trump this guy trump is crazy i said let me get here early because i will be late And I was really I don't want to say it's like because, by the way, you guys have you guys have said you like talk openly about how you're late to things. I would have never known like, oh, Marie is late if it wasn't literally in your Instagram bio. It's not like I'm noticing it. You know what I mean? You know what it is, then? That just means we don't hang out often enough because I've been late to I'd be late to all the things.
Starting point is 00:11:28 Yeah, it's like kind of built in because I hate being early. No, that's the issue. Like, I don't want to sit for 30 minutes and wait for somebody. I know. What do you do, though, if you get there early? I fume. Yeah. I steam.
Starting point is 00:11:40 You're not, like, reading. Are you on social media? I'll probably scroll, or maybe I'll call somebody who I ignored. You know how that goes. Let me tell you what happened. So we were supposed to go. We were at the bowling alley already, like, us and our, like, group chat or whatever, for Mateo Lane and Amina, her birthday, and he was celebrating.
Starting point is 00:12:02 His special just came out. They had went to the diner Marie literally is running late But they were still at the diner They said oh we're almost there Marie gets there and they're not there And she said oh my god I can't believe no one's here
Starting point is 00:12:17 And she left She literally left She said well I'm hungry I have to go I have to get something to eat Let's talk about why I was She left I left where I was Because I was like oh I'm running late
Starting point is 00:12:27 Everybody's already there I was like I could eat here But no no no I'm running too late I have to get there I get there I'm the first one there everybody else is eating right they're at their own respective restaurants and diners and places eating i was like oh and i don't want bowling alley food no you can't do bowling exactly but here's a question for you where did you ultimately eat i went back to where i started okay i went all
Starting point is 00:12:52 the way back downtown you went back to the cellar i went back to the cellar you went back to the cellar marie why are you repeating it i went back to the cellar i just couldn't believe it i went bite to the cellar. George, before we get into your mess today, can we talk about something that maybe you did that was
Starting point is 00:13:06 messy this week or recently? Ooh. Okay, this actually is going to go ahead and take us into my larger mess. Okay, the prologue.
Starting point is 00:13:17 So, basically, I had a very minor skincare thing and I was prescribed Accutane. Okay. I was not told. It's not,
Starting point is 00:13:27 you don't just get Accutane. Like that, That's heavy duty. By the way, can you tell I'm glowing? You look great. You look amazing. You don't even have pores.
Starting point is 00:13:35 You don't have pores. So I have a, I've now talked about the sunshade ellipse. I don't want to bore anyone who listens to both. No, no, no. This is a safe space. I had a thing like in my beard where basically it felt like my skin was like rejecting my facial hair. It was like painful to have a beard, but then I couldn't shave it because that would be
Starting point is 00:13:50 like putting a knife to. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That don't sound like a minor skin thing, George. Yeah, but I'm just saying I first I was misdiagnosed, whatever. Finally, they were like, we're going to put you on Accutane. Get on Accutane. Everything's going great. My skin, as you can tell, is glowing.
Starting point is 00:14:04 I went to Italy. Sorry. And I was having these amazing meals. I went to the birthplace of pesto. I had the most amazing pesto of my life. We're talking two bottles of Nebbiolo wine every night for dinner. Went in for my monthly checkup. Come to find out I'm not supposed to be drinking on Accutane.
Starting point is 00:14:23 I said, no, no, no, no, no. They hadn't told me that the first appointment. Oh, that's terrible. You said two bottles of wine? And so that is my recent mess. And I've now reformed myself. So that was month one. Now, starting month two, I'm not even having a sip of alcohol.
Starting point is 00:14:42 I think I'm going to be okay, but I am a little scared. I thought you were... Sorry, what happens if you drink... Sydney, you look shell-shocked. What happens if you drink on Accutane? Well, I'll tell you one thing. The first month, I did have a half dose, so I think it's going to be okay. And now with a full dose, I'm not going to drink.
Starting point is 00:14:56 it is processed through your liver from what i understand so you don't want to like stress out your liver more oh it's bad your liver and accutane dries you out yes not just like your your mouth your brain i bought a lip mask advertised by sydney sweeney and it's grapefruit scented lanage lanage but yes that's the one okay now let's since we're talking about sydney she's selling bars of soap with her bath water in it i did not purchase those okay so that's not go for the beer. But this is actually an independent brand that she's endorsing rather than bathwater she's making. Recession indicator.
Starting point is 00:15:31 Do you understand? That is on grounds of OF energy. I know. Yeah, but I don't think that's a recession indicator because Sydney Sweeney is booked. And she's like the spokesperson and the face of, I don't know, at least 15 brands.
Starting point is 00:15:47 She don't need to sell bathwater soap. But that's what I'm saying. Why are you selling bathwater soap? Because men will buy it. It's also like You sort of just have to keep your name out there. You know what I mean? And I also think, here's what I think about Sydney. It's not feeling good.
Starting point is 00:16:03 Here's what I think about Sydney. I think Sydney is actually making way more indie niche choices in the types of projects she does. So in order to make money, she has to sell the bathwater because she's going independent spirit mode rather than Marvel. Isn't she the face of Chanel? I know they cut in her a cute chick. Is she the face of Chanel? She's one of the, like, Lancome or one of these houses. houses. Like, she don't need
Starting point is 00:16:25 to do that. Do you think Coco Chanel would be happy to know Sidney Sweeney is carrying on her legacy? That's what I'm saying. It's a mixed mash of the brands. It's not... You do not sell your bath water unless, hey, are the lights getting cut off? Yeah. Well, wasn't she complaining a couple years ago about how hard it was
Starting point is 00:16:41 to pay for her house? She doesn't have generational wealth. Yes, she doesn't have generational wealth because, you know, her parents voted for Trump. Again, you gotta go high-low. I'm team Sidney on this one. Do you know what she's not endorsing? A meme coin, cryptocurrency She's doing something fun
Starting point is 00:16:57 She's doing something funky Is there a sense of humor there? Literally funky Also, you know, after her performance in that Glenn Powell movie She has to prove her comedic chops Because that did not do it You talk about anyone but you Selling the bathwater, I think
Starting point is 00:17:12 Is a nice way for her to dip her toes Back into the comedic waters No pun intended Do you think it's actual bath water in the soap? No. You think it's just bars of soap that they like? Yeah, it's a gimmick. It's like when people, it's like, these Cheetos smell like Brad Pitt's armpits.
Starting point is 00:17:29 It's like, okay. Somebody was selling a candle that smelled like their vagina. Who was that? Well, Gwyneth. Gwyneth. Goop. And I believe that, actually. She's so unhinged that I think that it would be very true to them.
Starting point is 00:17:40 Now, how do we get the poussoir water in the wax? Well, I mean, you would use water to make a candle, I presume, at some point. So instead of that water, you use the Poussoir water. You can say Poussoir for pride. I was going to say, before we move on, you said her performance with Glenn Powell. Yeah. First of all, Glenn Powell is running laps around a lot of people. So that was going to be a hard mashup.
Starting point is 00:18:06 Oh. I think she's an amazing performer, but I don't think she was able to do rom-com. Oh. I think she could do funny, but not rom-com. Like there was something. Yeah, Sydney. Yes, yes, yes. But I'm saying, but also Glenn on top of that.
Starting point is 00:18:19 Yes, he's too good. But also, I think. Oh, I'm going to have to rewatch the performance. He's that good to you? Wait, hold on. You think I'm thinking about Glenn Close. Never mind. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:18:30 Sydney, you thought there was a lesbian romance with Glenn Close and Sydney Sweeney? Glenn Close? Glenn Close and Sydney Sweeney? I was like, wait a minute. You're like, because Glenn Powell is amazing. I was like, is he? Did you not see Glenn Close in Deliverance? That's what I was thinking.
Starting point is 00:18:45 I didn't watch. I did actually watch the one clip of her being possessed, and I thought she gave an incredible performance. I haven't seen it. She's taking risks. She is. She's saying things I would never say on camera. She said, she said, nappy pussy. That's correct.
Starting point is 00:18:59 Yeah. Not you whispering. Why are we whispering the poussoir and pussy on the pod? Because I already said, you know, it doesn't just roll off the tongue for me. It literally rolls off your tongue. It literally rolls off your tongue. You don't know my business, and you shut up. L-O-L.
Starting point is 00:19:15 Okay. Anyway, Glenn Close, Glenn Powell, tomato, tomato. Yeah, Glenn, Glenn. They both have twisters. Now I want to watch like an age gap romance between Glenn Close and Sidney Sweeney. I actually would hear for that. Sort of maybe like a professor or like a writer or something. Sidney Sweeney looks up to her.
Starting point is 00:19:32 Maybe Sidney Sweeney is a journalist profiling her. Then Glenn Close, you know, comes out of the shower, rope comes off. I feel like Glenn Close is a woman that like when she come out the shower, that robe is tied. Oh, she's showering with a turtleneck on. Don't get it twisted. It is a cashmere turtleneck. Sydney's robe is going to slide off. Don't you do that to Glenn Close.
Starting point is 00:19:52 She has sex appeal. That's true. Because what it's sounding like is that she can't give, you know, cleavage. She can give decolletage. No, no, no. That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying there's no way her robe would slip off. Women that age, they tie it tight.
Starting point is 00:20:07 Oh, I see what you're saying. She's coming out. It's belted twice. It's belted tight. if glenn wants to give sex she can give it sydney's role i mean listen glenn is the original you know fatal attraction like yes crazy hot crazy wait cruella deville what's that movie with the with the violinist or the the orchestra tar that's kate blanchett kate blanchett i think if they did tar but with glenn glenn close yes and sydney sweeney that's good tell them put it in
Starting point is 00:20:39 lab. Work on it. Remake TAR now, four years later, with Glenn Close and Sidney Sweeney. The people are clamoring. New TAR. Remake! New TAR. TAR TAR. TAR TAR. There it is.
Starting point is 00:20:54 See, listen, we are really cooking right now. We are cooking right now. I do actually think, like, where are the new ideas? And by the way, TAR TAR counts, even though it is a franchise, it counts as a new idea. It is. It's brand new.
Starting point is 00:21:09 They're remaking a bunch of movies. I heard they're remaking The Bodyguard, and they wanted to redo it with Kim Kardashian. How dare they? I heard they wanted to redo it with Kimberly Kardashian. Hey, aliens, if you're listening, this is the time. Shut it down. What I want to see is Kim Kardashian, but she plays the bodyguard. And it's Kim Kardashian.
Starting point is 00:21:30 So can we get everyone to move? That's her as the bodyguard. And then the pop star is Glenn Close. I'm actually for that I'm crazy if we're just doing remakes and sequels then mix it up it's like
Starting point is 00:21:47 okay so they're making a Barney wait am I allowed to say that well yeah Ayo's doing it Ayo's gonna be Barney? She's writing it she's writing the Barney movie this feels like an episode of the studio
Starting point is 00:22:02 if you're gonna make a Barney movie then okay make it's like we have to make ip then make it funny yes or make it like weird make it make it different like cast one close as barney like and so i think okay if you're gonna remake the bodyguard do a gender flip do a lesbian do like set it in set it in mars i love a thriller let's bring all those movies back a messy like somebody cheated on their husband yeah yeah and Everybody's Gotta Die Now thriller. Totally. Where are those movies?
Starting point is 00:22:35 Well, no, I think people are not taking enough risks in the terms of everybody wants to be cool and have the biggest names to get the biggest draw. But there was times where people were doing things like Vampire in Brooklyn. Eddie Murphy, at his peak, was doing Vampire in Brooklyn with Angela Bassett. And that was one of the kookiest random movies.
Starting point is 00:22:55 But it was great. I loved it. People are too afraid to do stuff like that anymore. It's not people. It's the studios. It's the executives. You know, they get fired a lot. So they're like, well, let me just do what works.
Starting point is 00:23:07 And it's like, no, do something better. I see you got your A24 blouse on. Yeah, George. A24 makes fun movies. What you got going on in the mix? Well, you know, I might have had one line on the show Z-Way four years ago. And this was in the green room when I arrived, and I've been wearing it since. It looks like a good quality cotton.
Starting point is 00:23:26 It is a very good quality cotton. That's why I wear it out. You know, you don't usually see me in a t-shirt. No. Usually there's a collar. Something ironed. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Something with a fold.
Starting point is 00:23:37 Yeah. But this is a high-quality heavyweight tee, they call it. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. I know. What is A24 making? I mean. Did they do a Nora?
Starting point is 00:23:47 No. No, that was Neon, right? You know, Neon has won the last eight Palme d'Or as a can. Look at you. This mess. I don't even know what. I've never been to Cannes. You have.
Starting point is 00:23:57 Well, I haven't been to Cannes. I like the idea that I have to go there to get the news. You got that from the Daily? So wait, who won? Who won? LOL. George, what's your mess? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:26 Okay, so my mess inspired. You're talking about everything except yours. inspired by uh my experience drinking on accutane i now have had to embrace non-alcoholic beverages and my mess is generally speaking the beverage industry i and here's here's sort of like my angle on it it's like it kind of symbolizes all the excesses of capitalism you go into a bodega or into the supermarket go to the beverage section what are all those things i've never it they keep multiplying exponentially every month and you're like is this thc is this a kombucha is this some sort of like mocktail is this healthy is this you see descriptions that
Starting point is 00:25:09 are like infused with neuropathogens and you're like that's not real what's so like what is there are the is there any kind of you know even in a pre-rfk world is there any kind of like regulation that prevents someone from writing anything they want on a canned drink that is sort of like pastel purple colored and so i currently am you know when i drink alcohol i know exactly what i want i know exactly what i'm ordering now that i can't i'm exploring these other options and i'm running into a lot of walls where i'm like this none of this advert none of this correctly advertised there is way too much choice i should not have to choose between more than three choices at any given time in my life and so that and i think all this because you have
Starting point is 00:25:57 to be sober yes are you kidding what are you drink what mocktails are you drinking hey i've been doing this for almost eight years and i'm telling you they are dragging me from here to back because the thing is is that like ginger beer i'll do a ginger beer we'll muddle some stuff together and then that's still 15 so it's like i'd rather just get a like a little crayon club and call it a day because it's not for us it's for the people who have alcohol yeah and then i gotta go to dinner with these people who drink it and they're not thinking about me so i'm splitting the bill with them every single time i know and they're not like hey sydney didn't have you know three espresso martinis but she was here she was here so she's part of the table
Starting point is 00:26:35 well i actually think a reason to get an overpriced mocktail is exactly because of the bill splitting because it's like well if i'm gonna be paying for everyone else's bottle of wine And anyway, I might as well try the cucumber jalapeno like spritzer. Yes, yes. The beverage market is next. Yeah, I'm not talking about ordering really. I'm talking about like ready-made bottled and canned beverages. Do you not agree that there are too many?
Starting point is 00:26:59 Like when you enter a supermarket and you look at that entire row, you're so not impressed with this topic. No, no, no. We're trying to – I was like, oh, this is really niche. I know, I know. No, no, I love it. So you hate that there's too many options or you hate that you don't know which one to pick? I feel like the entire industry is lying. Like, I think this is like, I think all of these things are some version of like seltzer mixed with like chemicals.
Starting point is 00:27:23 Oh, absolutely. And I just think there's too much lying. My initial topic was going to be New York theater audiences. Have you been to like a play? We have. I saw Gypsy the other day. Yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 00:27:34 Well, Gypsy was obviously iconic. but every time it's like you go to a play and someone on stage is like now with fascism rising and people are like
Starting point is 00:27:44 oh finally someone someone said it finally you're like hello oh they really want people to talk about
Starting point is 00:27:51 the political it's just like landscape so it is you know how in comedy we have claptor and it's looked down upon that's all theater
Starting point is 00:27:58 yes crazy did you like Audra I did not I did not go to I went to Othello oh with um And Jake Gyllenhaal.
Starting point is 00:28:06 How was it? It was amazing. But also, we know, Othello, that language is complicated. I struggle. Boring. And so it's three hours, and you are listening to them kind of speak Shakespearean patois. Is that what you would call that? And I was piecing things together because I had already known the story.
Starting point is 00:28:35 And so because of the movements, I said, oh, I know what's happening right now. And what was crazy is that there were people sleeping. That is what's fucked up about the audience. Every time they say this in the reviews that all we do is drag white people. And so what? There was so many elderly. Well, that's Broadway. The elderly white people nodding off at Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Starting point is 00:29:02 And I said, go out and die. How dare you spend $800? Do you know what? Let's just, should my mess just be Broadway audiences? I'm not mad at that. Let's talk about Broadway. So, okay, Broadway audiences are, it is old, some of them deceased white people, and that then, like, occasionally wake up to cheer for...
Starting point is 00:29:22 Fascism. Yes, for fascism rising. and then they go back yes i can i say this i feel like when the first time i ever went to see a broadway show i thought oh people are going to be dressed up and yeah it's the theater yeah and so i always try to dress like you know nice i'm not wearing like a gown or anything like that but when i get there people got on bootcut jeans and mud splattered this that and the third and I also, I remember thinking like, yes, I remember thinking you dress up when you go to the theater. And now I know not to dress up, but I'm like, I'm not wearing shorts.
Starting point is 00:29:59 Then you get there and you see a man in cargo shorts. That's not okay. And an Old Navy performance fleece. Audra is almost like literally belting until she passes out every day. She's baring her soul up there and you got your midriff out? You got the back of your knees touching the chair? My issue with theater altogether is the prices. it's extremely
Starting point is 00:30:21 classist how is anybody supposed to go to this if it's $800 $1000 and the lowest ticket is $200 so it's the only thing I don't feel I ask for theater tickets all the time it's the only thing I email publicists about I don't
Starting point is 00:30:37 no no not mine but like people that work in theater I don't get free you know I'm not famous enough to get free like products or like sponsorships or anything like that but you start meeting people that work in theater and you know who to email they'll give you free tickets george go ahead and cc us with some of those emails let's make it a field trip or whatnot and then you know what happens is if you get a few for free then when you do pay for
Starting point is 00:31:03 one you're like okay well this is three hundred dollars that's like as though i paid 100 for each of the ones i went to yes that's that's girl math yeah that is yeah but all the money that people are paying in tickets is it going to the artists or it's going to the theater i do think from what i understand i remember at one point cole explained this to me okay early on like it is just it just does cost so much to make theater and like it would be lovely if the government funded more of it like in you know i'm sure in sweden theater tickets are like two dollars and it's like an amazing performance and everyone has a great time and then goes out and has non-alcoholic cocktails well i was told that broadway performers don't really get paid that well that's what i
Starting point is 00:31:50 heard i know but even even without getting paid well it still costs that much well i'll tell you what the theater that i was at the last time to see audra do what she do the seats were the rows were so close together like obviously like stadium seating but my knees oh my god and i'm five four so i don't know how anybody else was sitting in them and i had boots on because you know i was like yeah i'm dressed up i had to turn my knees to the side i could like my sister i had we crossed our legs over each other so we could stretch them it was crazy yeah yeah i mean it's this funny thing it's almost like a like going to disneyland because it is for tourists and it's way more expensive than it should be i remember when i found out how expensive disneyland was i was like
Starting point is 00:32:37 i'm sorry so all these gay guys i know have been paying like 300 every time they go that's crazy now i see why shonda rhimes asked for them extra tickets she said listen yeah i need i need some for my sister and they were like don't you have enough and she's like i don't and she said and now i'm on netflix yeah Disney land mess now she gets a free ticket to Netflix
Starting point is 00:33:00 to Dome Live so let's say you're a normal person you're not like super wealthy you shell out $350
Starting point is 00:33:07 to go to the theater suddenly you have to be in the presence of all these people who like are so out of touch and don't have good taste and are reacting
Starting point is 00:33:16 to the wrong things and it's their taste level that is dictating what gets put on stage too yeah that's how I felt when I was
Starting point is 00:33:24 when I went to go see slave play. There was a lot of times where, and I, at the time, I was dating this militant black woman, and I took her there for her birthday. You took her to slave play. I was like, because everybody's talking about it,
Starting point is 00:33:39 and I know Jeremy, and I was like, oh yeah, let me go. Because we were surrounded by older white people, and the stuff that they were laughing at, she's like, what the fuck? She was so pissed, and she, and we were sitting in the middle,
Starting point is 00:33:55 And she just was like, we're getting up. We're going. We're leaving. Damn. Like, towards the end. I said, hey, we probably got 10 more minutes. She's like, I've had enough. And I was like, you don't get it.
Starting point is 00:34:06 But I think she was uncomfortable with watching it with the audience, the people. Yes, exactly. Because it's like when you are writing something and, you know, God willing, it gets on Broadway. You have to literally almost write it with the mindset that it is going to be viewed by this very select group of people. which is not the case for writing, like, a movie or a TV show or an album, like, there's a very good chance it literally won't reach the people that you are trying to appeal to because tickets are, like, $400. I saw a slave play for free.
Starting point is 00:34:38 Yeah, well, there was – he did do a night where it was, like, a blackout night. I think there were multiple nights like that. Yeah, there were so many nights where if you were black, it would be cheaper or whatever. But, yeah, we went on the night. I spent really good so much money for these tickets we did not have sex
Starting point is 00:34:55 that night we did not have sex I hate that for you I think if if you buy a Broadway ticket you should be entitled to some compensation I did not get
Starting point is 00:35:02 but don't you think a lot of people are not having sex after slave play well I don't know it's I think somebody might have
Starting point is 00:35:10 went to see it and they said it was hot for them I don't know like an interracial couple okay like Shannon Sharpe yep
Starting point is 00:35:16 that's exactly Unk Unk was getting it in after Slay yes he peeled them tight joggers off and he took his
Starting point is 00:35:27 A6 off as well wait what's another play that I went to go see that I was like oh I saw Tina I saw Tina I saw the
Starting point is 00:35:35 MJ Broadway great it was amazing I mean again somebody else paid for these tickets
Starting point is 00:35:43 so I was like oh I have no notes they're always better when somebody else pays for them no not always but now
Starting point is 00:35:50 I'm trying to decide if I want to see between Sunset Boulevard which is the I've seen it Pussycat Dolls girl or Death Becomes Her okay that's a really good question
Starting point is 00:35:58 so is this amazing radio for everyone me analyzing whether you should see Sunset Boulevard or Death Becomes Her well just
Starting point is 00:36:05 give people quick synopsis of what one is I would say both are great options first of all you can't go wrong Death Becomes Her is like
Starting point is 00:36:13 so high camp like fun sight gags like crazy sequences of like a body double getting like punched in the face and then you see the other woman come in behind him and like just like really great funny physical comedy performances sunset boulevard is like first of all it's a tour de force from like it's good that she's getting all the praise like she deserves all the praise it's like an incredible performance from nicole scherzinger it is how you say that name scherzinger scherzinger nicole scherzinger it is a very bare
Starting point is 00:36:47 do you know the vibe of the it's like a bare set there's like nothing on stage oh then I'm not gonna see that and it's all people wearing like all black or whatever no no no
Starting point is 00:36:54 I'm not seeing that you don't want that no she's in a slip dress the whole time when I go to see Broadway I wanna see Broadway wardrobe so go to Death Becomes Her Broadway level
Starting point is 00:37:02 go to Death Becomes Her set design Broadway like I wanna see like people from all over the world come here to do their art yeah and Broadway is like
Starting point is 00:37:08 you know top tier theater I don't wanna see a black box you got on a negligee that you got from aliexpress well i think that's another thing i'm often shocked by and brought on broadway is like you think okay i'm paying 400 it should be like flying sets and like people it should be everything should be harry potter the musical if i'm paying 400 there should be people paying quidditch above
Starting point is 00:37:29 me at all times and then sometimes you go and it's like okay it's a couch and an armchair and it's about a family at christmas no i saw a movie uh a play jake gyllenhaal was in and it was just him monologuing in the dark for an hour or two. I was like, this is trash. No, no, no. Maybe not trash, but just not what you expected. But what you're describing should be more
Starting point is 00:37:51 affordable. Yes. I also didn't pay for that ticket, so I don't know. It wasn't off-Broadway? No, it was on-Broadway. Off-Broadway is more affordable. It's more affordable, right? I went to see Wicked. We all went to go see Wicked. Oh, yeah. They spent money on that. Yes.
Starting point is 00:38:07 We know where our money is going for Wicked. Yes, exactly. I liked the movie better than... I haven't seen the show. I will say, I didn't know anything about it going in. I saw the movie, had never seen the show. I ultimately got on board, but the assault of musical theater energy
Starting point is 00:38:27 was shocking to me. Do you like musical theater or no? I'm getting into it in my adulthood. No, that sounds like you don't like it. Why is that? Talk to us. Bright, just like so much, so many bright colors, so many crazy costumes. Everyone is at 110.
Starting point is 00:38:44 By the way, they're doing a great job. I'm not like that is what the script calls for. But it's so much like my ideal movie is a woman getting divorced. Shut up. OK, what's the name? What's the lady with the red hair? Juliana. Julianne Moore.
Starting point is 00:38:56 Yeah, literally Julianne Moore. She's getting a divorce and she's growing closer to her daughter. That's my ideal. OK, so you're also like it sounds like you're a big Nicole Kidman. Love a Nicole Kidman movie. You know, she plays the same role over and over and over again. Yeah, but the wigs are different every time. The wigs are different, but she's the same.
Starting point is 00:39:13 She's the same. I just saw Baby Girl, finally. You know, not her best. I was not. I just saw it because people were talking about it so much, and I finally got my hands on an HBO Max password. And you don't have one. I'm paying.
Starting point is 00:39:25 I actually thought she was great in it, and so is he. Hey. Yeah. What is great? Someone explain to me. So you're saying Nicole Kidman playing a rich boss bitch, risking it all for an intern. What what? Even if she's acting correct, what is so empowering about that movie?
Starting point is 00:39:52 But great doesn't equal empowering. Yeah. You're cheating on Antonio Banderas. I think that. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. There are many.
Starting point is 00:40:00 I mean, that is crazy. That is the craziest part. That was he was miscast. Although maybe it's like maybe it honestly it's about like there's so much trauma that not even Antonio Banderas can make her come. I think that's what it is. But we're supposed to believe that this 30 year old intern. He wasn't even 30.
Starting point is 00:40:16 Again. He wasn't even 30. You're thinking too literally about the men. This is about her. It's like the men could be anyone. It could be Garfield the cat. Like she is the one that has to have this journey of self-discovery. Okay.
Starting point is 00:40:26 Well, I need her to do a live, laugh, love or pray. I need her to go on that type of trip. I don't want to see her making these decisions in a cubicle or like an upscale office. Did you like when she went to the rave in Business Casual? Absolutely not. She was in the express satin, satin top. She said the pussy bow stays on when I'm on Molly. I could not believe it.
Starting point is 00:40:50 I was like, come on, Nicole. I think she had a briefcase. She had a briefcase. She was like, I got the laptop, sending an email. It's like she did. She was like, where are you? We need to get on a Microsoft Teams meeting. She did big little lies.
Starting point is 00:41:01 Everything is just an iteration of Big Little Lies. So, Sydney, I completely agree with you. But I would encourage you, have you done a deep dive into pre-Big Little Lies, Nicole? Is that Moulin Rouge? Yes, but have you seen Birth? No. All right, so get ready for this. Are you ready?
Starting point is 00:41:16 First of all, pixie cut. Picture it. But it's the same color. Pixie cut. Picture it. She is a woman, a widow. Her husband died. Right.
Starting point is 00:41:25 Young kid shows up, tells her he's the husband reincarnated. The kid? Yes. He knows all this stuff about her, and she starts believing this is my husband reincarnated as a kid. That's the premise of the movie. You're telling me you don't want to watch this? Does she bang this child? I'm not going to spoil.
Starting point is 00:41:40 Oh, no. Okay, what's most important for me is she poor. No. Okay, I don't want to see any more Nicole Kidman, rich, doing well, have a home. Watch Destroyer. I take all of that. Do you know Destroyer? Is she on the streets?
Starting point is 00:41:55 Yes. Oh. Totally on the streets. Okay, let me run it down. Let it run. So, yeah, we have to watch it. Let's mess her up. Destroy her.
Starting point is 00:42:02 And it's funny because Nicole Kidman is so naturally, first of all, beautiful, and second of all, like, you know, her face is what it is. And so in order to make her seem more down to earth, they can't do anything to her actual face. So they just, like, cover her with, like, soot. Like, that's how you're supposed to know that she's, like, going through our time. You're making me upset. But we're going to watch it.
Starting point is 00:42:20 They said, let's throw some more bronzer on her. Add to the contour. Did they make her, did they put, like, a tan on her as well? Yeah, a little bit. So they darken Nicole Kidman up? No, no, no. It's more like she's tan because you know she's out in the sun. And bags under her eyes.
Starting point is 00:42:36 Okay, destroy. So no filler. She let it dissolve. I'm trying to think, though. This is such a good prompt. Which movies is Nicole Kidman poor in? This is such a good prompt. Dogville.
Starting point is 00:42:47 I've never even heard of these movies. You guys would not like Dogville. Oh, why? You know why? Because the gimmick is that there's no sets. It's all on a soundstage. so you would hate it because you want
Starting point is 00:42:58 Death Becomes Her oh so you know what I mean it's more this is more it's a movie but it's like it might as well be a play
Starting point is 00:43:05 oh no we don't want okay so me and Marie have to watch Destroyer and go live yeah and make comments about Director of Jennifer's Body
Starting point is 00:43:13 Karen Kusama okay Jennifer's Body I like Jennifer's Body I think yeah that was for the girls Megan Fox
Starting point is 00:43:18 yes Megan Fox what other movies does Nicole Kidman pour in no she's not pouring anything because we don't believe that she could she just you know
Starting point is 00:43:27 Maybe because she can't do a poor accent. You know, she's Australian. She's trying to sound American. Yeah. She's not poor in this, but have you seen Eyes Wide Shut? Yeah. That's good. Do you not like that?
Starting point is 00:43:37 I did like that. Yeah, that's a great one. Yeah, but that felt more artistry built into that. And even with the script and the setting, the set design, it just gave me more than what she's used with. She was in another thing that was in HBO that was just another thing of like White Lotus. The one with the giant green coat that she was wearing. That one? Yes.
Starting point is 00:44:02 What about the one on Netflix where she... Yes, the couple, the perfect couple. The perfect couple, yeah, yeah, yeah. You know I watched every single episode. I did too. And then there's another one. I think I watched it at Cindy's house. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:11 Yeah, yeah, yeah. I came in and I was like, what the fuck are y'all watching? No, I'm kidding. So everything now is about rich people. Everything. I'm tired of it. But everybody is not rich. yeah but it's like they're counting on normal people wanting to gawk at rich people and also
Starting point is 00:44:27 you sort of like don't have to get it right because not enough of us are one percenters that we would like understand what the flaws are whereas if you make a show about you know a barista dating a you know candlestick candlestick you're just throwing anything out there huh marie a barista dating a candlestick that's Poor people's stuff. A rich person would be dating a chandelier. Yes. I'm sure you like this.
Starting point is 00:44:56 Get in the lab. We got to get in the library. Write this down. And is a rich person, is the poor person eating the pussy candle or a normal candle? Oh, the pussy candle was like $900. I don't know. Goop was not charging cheap H&M prices for that. It's not for the people.
Starting point is 00:45:10 It's for specific people. Make an H&M pussy candle with just like a random woman. No, I'm going to get chlamydia from that candle. No, thank you. I'm all set. Oh, that's the name of the candle. Lamedia. But it's spelled with a little umlaut.
Starting point is 00:45:26 Okay, so fully against. I don't want to see. I enjoy Nicole Kidman, but I want her to make a shift. I understand. So there's that for me. I understand that. And I actually, as a really big Nicole Kidman fan, I agree with you that it's been a bit one note in terms of rich woman with trauma over and over again.
Starting point is 00:45:48 But I think that this is what some actors do, right? They find their niche or they find their lane and they just do those types of movies until now they have to play somebody's mom or somebody's dad. Yeah. And I do think it is difficult for, you know, actresses as they age because I'm like, what are the stories about non-rich older women? Like, what was the last movie that was about a non-rich older woman? She was rich and tar. Or just stress expensive. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:21 What else? I want to be quite frank with you. I'm not a movie buff. I don't really watch movies that much. And I'm like, ugh. And if I do watch movies, they're from back in the day. Because that really gets me going and makes me feel inspired. I feel like I keep watching up-to-date movies that are just another iteration of something that's already been done.
Starting point is 00:46:43 I know. So are you more film, TV, or music? tv i'm more tv i just i watched the pit and i felt like that matthew love we need more the pit it's you want you are prestige procedural yes yeah but for some reason it feels a little low budget like yeah not the not the energy but i really do feel like i'm in philly somewhere in this you know dead-end hospital that everybody's working so hard to keep up Well, you are in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh.
Starting point is 00:47:19 Okay. There it is. There it is. Wow. I really get caught off. Now, where is Pittsburgh? What state is that? So it is going to go ahead and be in Pennsylvania.
Starting point is 00:47:28 It's going to be in Pennsylvania. Thank you, geography and location. Because sometimes I've been trying to plan a tour and you think, okay, Philly, Pittsburgh. Not the same. So far. Not the same. You can't do Philly, Pittsburgh, Boston. No, you can't.
Starting point is 00:47:43 We had to cancel our Pittsburgh date because it didn't make sense. You probably left at least 62 people very disappointed. Shut the fuck up, Marie. You know it's going to be exactly 62 people at my show. That's not true because if you're at Bottle Rocket, they have more than 62 people. They do, and I performed there last year, and I loved it, and I really wanted to return. But if you're trying to do more in less time, it just doesn't make sense. It's too far.
Starting point is 00:48:10 Pittsburgh, Marie. I don't think anybody in Pittsburgh is looking for me. That's what you think. No, no, no. They are. They are. Bottle Rocket has really good audiences. She's not interested.
Starting point is 00:48:22 She's not interested. Not at all. What is your best, the two of you, like, what is your best city other than New York, LA, and Chicago? In terms of where I like to perform? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, I think I'm excited to discover some of those cities this year, right? Like, I'll be in Toronto. That's great.
Starting point is 00:48:38 And I feel like I've only ever heard good things about that. You know, I'm doing Zany's in Chicago this year. That's going to be so fun. And I'm excited to do that. I just want to be in, like, you know, small, cute clubs with people who, you know, have taste, enough taste that they bought a ticket to see me. That's it. I love D.C. Me too.
Starting point is 00:48:59 It's just like a good mix of people. And there's cute people. There's fun people. There's educated people. There's down-to-earth people. But that's D.C. Positive people. Positive people.
Starting point is 00:49:11 D.C. is so many closeted. Very closeted. It's kind of retro and fun in a way. You know, everyone's closeted. How do you know they're closeted? Did you see them come to your shows? Because of the government. All of them are like closeted and working in the government.
Starting point is 00:49:22 House of Cards. But somehow they're at your show and you're like, how did you find out about them? Yeah, they're at my show. Skinny, khaki girlfriend. Skinny, khaki girlfriend. Yeah. New Orleans is a fun city to perform in, too. I've never performed.
Starting point is 00:49:39 New Orleans is just a fun city. um i almost got kidnapped there what mess when when i went that's sort of part of the experience though wait how did you get kidnapped i didn't say i got i almost got kidnapped well i remember the guy he wanted to eat your ass yeah i remember that not that guy okay that's a different okay what you have to tell this or you can't just say i almost got kidnapped okay so i was out in new orleans and there was this couple that was like out and the woman was like flirting with me a lot and i'm kind of i'm just like like i i will flirt back yeah but like to a point right and i went into the bathroom and she followed me into the bathroom because she also needed to pee and so
Starting point is 00:50:25 like now my spidey senses are kind of tingling but like nothing happened in the bathroom i peed i checked above the stall to make sure she wasn't watching me i checked below the stall they might have been a camera looking at my butt i don't know um i come out and i'm like damn i really wish i had some weed i want to smoke and she was like oh we have plenty of weed oh poly people are kidnapping we've poly people are kidnapping and i was like oh where like is it here and she's like no it's like it's at the house right babe right babe and he's like um yeah like you you could tell that she's kind of like the ringleader of all of this like she liked me she wanted to hook up so he had to just be down for that and uh but he also was like down for whatever she was saying
Starting point is 00:51:13 and she's like yeah no it's um it's at the house we have weed at the house just come back with us and we'll we'll smoke together and she was like i'm not that far and i said where do you live and then she said where it was and it was like it was like a 45 minute drive from where i was I wasn't going to get in the car anyway but for you to tell me it's close and then you trying to take this is trafficking this is what Diddy's on trial for
Starting point is 00:51:39 okay Marie I'm going to be honest with you this was not you did not escape kidnapping he went to bring the van around and she fully was trying to get me in the car I did escape a kidnapping believe women believe women George
Starting point is 00:51:55 I'm black Natalie Holloway George do not fight this what did this couple because you know I'm of course imagining like women with
Starting point is 00:52:04 purple or blue pixie cut man with ponytail how far or close am I it was a light skinned black woman and a white man
Starting point is 00:52:12 and I said you saw it you could see it or are you attracted to either of them no no is this when we went
Starting point is 00:52:19 for Amina no this is when I went for Miley oh god oh Miley Cyrus no another
Starting point is 00:52:26 person Does this give Molly Cyrus? Honestly, I don't know. Maybe free ticket. I will never forget when I did Unofficial Expert. You guys dragged me because I said I had seen Rihanna in concert. And you were like, why would you go see Rihanna? She can't even sing.
Starting point is 00:52:40 And I was like, wait, wait, wait, wait. Did we say that? I can't remember. We did not say that. We did not say that. That's crazy. That doesn't even sound like us. I remember having to defend myself.
Starting point is 00:52:50 We're upset. I don't know if I need to see her live. Did we say that? Listen, that's how I remember it. I don't remember that. How many times did you see Rihanna live? This was a while ago. This was like, I'm trying to think if it was pre-Anti or if it was the Antitour.
Starting point is 00:53:03 What's your favorite Rihanna song? Rihanna probably puts on a good show. I would say, well, first of all, my favorite album is, I'm just a big Anti, like, fanboy. What is my favorite Rihanna song? I will also say Anti has like 20 songs on it. I know, I know. So you're going to have at least five or six that you like. Wait, I'm going to look up, I'm going to look up like.
Starting point is 00:53:22 I can't believe you dragged us. I couldn't believe that you threw us under the Rihanna bus like that. It does feel like something we could have said, but you didn't have to repeat it. Honestly, they're going to have to pull it up if they think that we said something like that. George, what were you the expert on when you did the unofficial expert? Do you remember? I have no idea. I think Greek.
Starting point is 00:53:37 Yeah, it might have been Greece. Greece or Greek expert. Yeah, it was the Greek expert. We were like, our Greek friend. You know, I love, I do love love on the brain. I do love Desperado. I do love work. but honestly i have to say i like auntie more as an album than like if i'm picking favorite songs
Starting point is 00:53:55 i'm gonna go like esperado george you're giving me like college college fan of uh rihanna like your dissertation yes well you know i have theory that each of her albums corresponds to each of my years in college and do you want to hear it yes i'll take that and then we'll do it and then we have messages yeah we'll do one of them we'll share some mess so the albums that came out while i was in college are good girl gone bad loud talk that talk and unapologetic all right freshman year good girl gone bad i'm in college good girl gone bad that speaks for itself second year loud now we're like now we're cooking what were you doing to be loud i know how like it's like now you know who your friends are you're going out you're like having a good time you're loud you're being
Starting point is 00:54:38 yourself what's sophomore year i mean junior year talk that talk time to get serious time to declare you're a major and time to maybe start thinking about your future. Time to talk that talk. Okay. Senior year, unapologetic. Talk that talk didn't work out. And now you have to say, this is who I am and I'm not apologizing for it.
Starting point is 00:54:57 Hello, well. Damn, I would have maybe done better in college if I did it that way, didn't you? I feel like you did well in school. All I did was good girl gone bad. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, mine was, we fell in love in a hopeless place. that was my whole
Starting point is 00:55:12 college situation you were in love Sydney yes it is as the title says we found love in a hopeless place oh man
Starting point is 00:55:19 I mean you just love correcting a black queer queen when I see it what did you say we fell in love in a hopeless place we fell in love
Starting point is 00:55:26 in a hopeless place no I do I do it also kind of works you know what I meant do you know what I love actually I would say as much as I love
Starting point is 00:55:35 we found love in terms of the classics if only girl in the world comes on I'm in a better mood than if we found love comes on at this stage in my life like if i'm out i prefer only girl so we found love yes because we found
Starting point is 00:55:47 love is toxic yeah you don't want that exactly you're in a better place you're yeah you've evolved i've evolved you have an emergency contact now true a good one someone that picks up that's right listen we okay i'm not your emergency contact i don't have to pick up we talked about this we did you said i'm not your emergency contact is are you hers why she has a family see you only use your friends as an emergency contact if you're an orphan
Starting point is 00:56:15 and that is me it's a hard life All right, let's read a message from a listener. And then we'll talk about if it's messy, we'll get your take on it. It's got a long, so strap in. Get your popcorn, get your juice, put your feet up. Hey, Sid and Marie, it's your girl Yara from Toronto writing in again. Oh, a second letter.
Starting point is 00:56:59 Okay. Hey, girl. I've written into the pod back in 2020 about having my very first one night stand. okay and another time about getting ghosted for the first time oh hey sis back to back i'm happy to share that i am finally no longer for the streets and i found myself an incredible partner and i'm currently moving in with them okay the mess i'm bringing today isn't about my partner but about my best friend some context this friend and i have been close for about five years ride or die ride or die type
Starting point is 00:57:34 She's also a central figure in our friend group, which makes this even more complicated. Throughout our friendship, we've had a couple fallen outs, always centered around me not meeting some expectation she never clearly communicated. Right? It usually starts with her icing me out, and only when I ask what's wrong does she open up with a long message about how I'm not supportive enough, or I don't check in enough, or I did something three years ago that upset her, etc., etc.
Starting point is 00:58:01 I take accountability, adjust my behavior. Things would improve briefly, then repeat. Nothing I did was ever enough. I check in more. Nope. I need to check in more intentionally. I check in more intentionally. Nope.
Starting point is 00:58:14 The attention seems fake now. Okay, girl. As you can tell, I had a lot of patience for this friend. I owned up to everything, listened, and tried harder each time. But by last October, I broke. I had spread myself too thin trying to be better, But she was coming back to me weekly about how I was failing her and not being a good friend. I eventually took a step back from all my friendships, thinking I was the problem.
Starting point is 00:58:39 Like, your best friend comes to you every few months or weeks to tell you you're not good enough because of X, Y, Z. And no matter what you do, it's never enough. The psychological damage went zeeep. I ended up isolating myself for months. Okay, this is crazy. But with help from my partner and therapist, shout out to the partner and therapist. There it is. You got to do the double whammy every time.
Starting point is 00:59:00 Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm glad she's not in the streets. I realized that I was never the problem, and this friend has been projecting her issues onto me and treating me like an emotional punching bag. I finally saw that. I wasn't the villain here, and I was able to release myself from the guilt I felt about being this so-called terrible friend and began to heal. I was ready to reintegrate myself into the friend group,
Starting point is 00:59:21 but I knew I needed to have a conversation with her first. Well, I'm sure you can guess how that conversation went. I had hoped we could find common ground and move forward, but she somehow flipped the script again and took zero accountability i thought that in the time apart she would be able to reflect and see things from my side but it's clear now she'll always be the victim in her story and how she treats me is justified okay whoa this conversation lasted four hours and ended up with us agreeing to start fresh to put this all behind us however this conversation actually solidified things for me and proved that this is not someone i wanted my life
Starting point is 00:59:56 anymore although i'm scared about leaving this friendship could mean losing the whole group it's time to let this beach go so my question is this is it mess to quietly phase her out of my life aka go ghost mode and risk the fallout of losing this friend group or is it worth one final conversation to end things officially and set boundaries within the overall group as always appreciate you both watching the way you show up for each other reminds me of what a real healthy friendship looks like p.s tickets have been secured for marie's toronto show in june hey i stay supporting my favorite comedians so that's the question from a canadian is it mess to quietly phase her out or do they need to have another conversation i know that's the type
Starting point is 01:00:39 of person who keeps thinking a conversation is going to fix anything and i just think once you have the four hour one and you still don't have closure you're not going to get it with another hour and a half one and it's not going to be another hour and a half yeah and i i also think there's a point at which talking about something just becomes like talking about the talking you're just talking about previous things that have been said and previous things and and like the way things have been framed rather than any actual actions that have taken place but also if you see this person this person sees you trying to be better they see you reaching out and they're like it doesn't feel intentional and then you reach out intentionally you're like it feels fake
Starting point is 01:01:14 i'm not i'm not doing any more work here like this is mess that you are gaslighting me it also sort of i think i think you want you basically each of them probably wants the other one to admit that something is their fault and that's just never going to happen they each clearly think they're in the right for whatever they think they're experiencing well this one said she took a break from all her friendships she she found the lord she went on a mountain and pray like it's not like she did all that and the other girl is just like no it's you it's still you now Now, I'm not a devil's advocate, but I do want to know what exactly what are the specific things that she was upset about? Because if you are a person that gives a lot and you just give, give, give, and then you're not receiving the same, then you expect people are not they're not going to act like you.
Starting point is 01:02:07 So there's a lot of things that are going over people's heads that you're missing because you're like, this is not how they get down. This is not how they love. this is not their love language but you're kind of thinking that that's how you should be treated and you're not that's what you're these expectations okay so i think that you know yara you did come to my show when i was there in toronto um i she does seem like a sweet girl uh but if someone's saying you're not showing up for me i would like to know what was it that you weren't showing up for because maybe these are things that i think are not that important other People are like, this is a big deal.
Starting point is 01:02:45 And then I'm like, oh, maybe I should have made this a big deal. Or the things that are a big deal to me, people are like, girl, what? Come on now. I know. Move on, you know? You missed my birthday dinner. You missed my book launch. You missed my X, Y, Z.
Starting point is 01:03:00 If you're missing my book launch, I'm going to be mad at you because I'm not writing another one of those. George, have you ever had a quiet date? Yes. I have had, I've had one major, like from one day to the next, no more talking before. And, but it was because of like a specific event that really felt like a deep betrayal. And we both agree it was a betrayal. Like he also regrets what he did and has apologized for it. I was young enough that I wasn't willing to hear it.
Starting point is 01:03:40 And so I was like, right from now on, I'm not talking to you. And at this point, it's sort of just, like, too late to rekindle it, which is fine. And we are both indifferent. I no longer hold any negative feelings about it. Like, if somehow we ran into each other, I wouldn't, like, have a panic attack. But, like, we're not going to go back to being friends, like, over a decade later. So there was that, which I actually think is a blessing to have a specific break. You know, like, something where you can point to and be like, I am mad at you because you did this.
Starting point is 01:04:10 And everyone agrees you shouldn't have done that. What I do struggle with is friends that clearly you've grown apart from or even if it's like asymmetrical, like you think you think you've grown apart and they have not gotten the memo or maybe the other way around. I mean, I wouldn't I wouldn't know because I they would have to tell me. But that is really stressful. And I'm not good at like, quote unquote, drawing boundaries. I will basically just, like, you know, I will, like, respond to every third text or something. And then it just, like, creates this, like, toxic environment where you're, like, dragging on something for, like, 15 more years. So what's the not messy way to do that?
Starting point is 01:04:52 Handle that. Yeah, Sid. Let them go? I mean, I feel like if we have a back and forth, we keep having a back and forth. Obviously, vibes is off, right? Vibes is off. We keep going back and forth, right? And then we take a break, we come back, vibe's still weird.
Starting point is 01:05:10 I mean, do I have to spell out hate of vibes? I know. But I think you do have to spell it out for some people. Not for me because, not for me, but saying like, okay, if they're best friends, right? Like me and Marie, I think that we would have to have like a real talk where I'll be like, okay, at the end of the talk, I guess we're not like how we used to be anymore. Or I'd be like, hey, are we going to work on this? yeah because there's there's also a moment like let's work on it if you really want this person in your life that's why i don't like ghosting if somebody is important to you you wouldn't ghost
Starting point is 01:05:47 them but somebody who you're like you know i actually i probably got like two other type of people in in the boat right now i'm i'm good you know then i'll ghost bring back ghosting bring it back why marie because sometimes we've we've had enough words i've explained this to you we now have had a four hour conversation you still think it's just me cool well i don't know i do think that it's like it people generally myself including to be more comfortable with just like uncertainty like not every conversation is going to end with like this is the end conclusion end of story acknowledgments like sometimes you won't get to a point where all parties agree but i have another question because to me to me the most mess part of this is the friend group of it all
Starting point is 01:06:33 yeah like it's one thing to go through a fallout with the best friend but then to for that to bring into question your place in the friend group is what stresses me out have you ever iced someone out of the friend group or been iced out yourself yes i have and i do it again i sure will i sure will because it's like friends know what's up they know what's up like i'm not telling people to take sides but obviously people are gonna be like well i'm actually at the end of the day i'm closer with this other person and you just come in and out when you when you feel like you should so it's like and and that's gonna happen if they just let it rock it'll play out the way it's supposed to i i say that so if you're like i don't want to talk to this person anymore tell the group
Starting point is 01:07:19 hey we we not really clicking i'm not really trying to y'all can hang out if y'all want but i want to hang out with y'all well yeah because she said a couple things right she said she's the Central figure in the friend group. That's tough. And then she said, is it worth one final conversation to end things officially and set boundaries within the overall group?
Starting point is 01:07:38 So that means she's still trying to be cool with these people. Or I guess she's afraid that this, the Beyonce of the friend group is going to be like, well, I'm taking my friends back. Did she say the central or a central? She said the central.
Starting point is 01:07:52 Girl, start over. Just get new friends. That's why you got to have a couple. You got to have more than like three friends, man. You know, I have a couple in the bag. You know, someone last night was telling me she was like she said something that stuck with me. She was like, adult friend groups are creepy. And I was like, that's interesting.
Starting point is 01:08:09 Like, obviously, we all have we're all part of different friend groups. But I sort of agree that like when you see a group and they are it's just the six of them and they are always together and they're all 37. It's like, you know, like, at that point, I do actually think, like, high school dynamics are recreated because you are in this, like, clique. You actually have to be part of different communities. Oh, 100%. It has to be porous, and you have to have these friends and these friends. But I do think, to quote this person, adult friend groups are creepy. I mean, we saw White Lotus.
Starting point is 01:08:47 The three girls that were on that trip did not like each other. Yeah. And also seem to not really know each other all that well because all this time had passed. And it's just a, if your friendships is just based off, we're all meeting up and we're all like eating, drinking, da, da, da, da. That's not, that's not a friend group to me. That's like y'all are acquaintances and y'all meet up from time to time. Surface level stuff. Yeah, surface level.
Starting point is 01:09:10 Like, I feel like a friend group is, I mean, obviously there's going to be people who are closer to each other and nobody feels any type of way about that. there's an understanding and then there's things that people the day-to-day but like yeah let them start over friend you got to start i think so toronto's a great city you'll meet so many people i can introduce you to my friends in toronto yeah girl go on um bumble don't get kidnapped but you know yeah anyway george tell the people what you have coming up so that they can find you yes so instagram all that let them know i host the podcast straight alive with sam taggart and the two of us are going on a stand-up only tour.
