She's like Molly. Anyway, you know you're her favorite. What were you an expert in this week? I was an expert in communicating better. I was just trying to be more vocal about how I feel at work because I care about what I do. Even though I might do shit last minute or I might drag my feet or I might be lazy. It's a lot of stuff. I do still care.

So, you know, I've been working this job for almost nine months now. Wow, a baby. Yeah, it's coming towards the end. And, you know, I just want to make sure that I put out enough content or have enough things that like when I'm not there. Yeah, we saw your death thing. Yeah, that wasn't my script, but they thought about me. Because you had the most followers? Got it.

No, bitch, you rude. Because you verified? Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, no, no, no, no. Because death is my brand. Stop it. I thought that was your thing. Okay, cool.

Yeah. No, no, no. But when we pitch stuff, we think about things for other people. And so they thought, the person who thought about me. Always be pitching. Wow. That's literally my job. I just pitch all day, all night, every day.

And just everything is a no. So it's great. I just want to make sure that I leave and I have enough. And so I've just been honest and open about like, hey, you know, I think I'm really good at this. And I think I should before whatever is over, I want to make sure that I hit these goals that I have. So hopefully this other thing that I want to tell us any what any of your goals are each in this in the job, you're supposed to have a series. and I did a series with makeup tutorials. With the cat makeup?

Yeah, it got canceled. It's fine. It happens. I had a whole thing get canceled. It's fine. I survived. You understand. I, too, relate to cancellation.

And I just want to have another series, an interview series, because that's what I'm good at. I do this podcast for a living, and I feel like I interact well with people. I am not a front-facing camera person. That's not my content. Front-facing camera? Oh, you don't take pictures? I don't take. No, no, no.

You're not behind the camera. You're in front of the camera. No, no, no. Wait. I don't do the videos where people are characters and then cut it up and edit it and post it. That's not me. I will talk to the camera to my followers

as if like it's happening in real time like a storyteller but I'm not a crafted like you're not a vine chick exactly got it

and we're better than that sis okay well let's not I'm just saying like that's not who we are as performers and creators we're better than I'm a stand up

I'm a stand up that's who I really am true to and I try to stay to that but in this program it's like oh you gotta try things that you don't do and so

I've learned I wanna do something that I'm good at that'll show me in the best light. You know? That's just what it is. I tried to do

the makeup tutorial. That's not me. I'm not a YouTuber. I don't... That's not for me. So... No, but that doesn't mean that the videos weren't good.

That just means that, you know, the people who watch those videos, it wasn't for them. That's all. Actually, a lot of people liked it.

It's just... That's what I'm saying. They just didn't have the numbers that they wanted, which I've learned. I mean, if you kept doing it... That's all that matters here. If you did them separate...

Since you could always just started youtube you know you could become one of those people that at at this age friend that girl that stole marybeth's jokes was a youtuber what girl did you see that jokes that was crazy lily sing lily sing she stole marybeth's jokes you know the joke uh about like the index finger working swipe swipe okay hold on hold on her name is lily sing and she has a show she has writers so she did not steal the joke the rotor the writers were in a room and somehow got marybeth's joke. I mean, it's probably mainly comedians in the writing room anyway.

Do we know them? Pull up the deadlines. Pull up the IMDB. Who works on that show? So she did it on the show? Yes. And performed it terribly. It was bad. It was really bad. It was like the delivery was off. Your singer does work.

Oh, you know Mary Beth Jones? No, I know. I was watching the set, but lucky for Mary Beth, the video from Clusterfest is on YouTube. Yes, and it was viral. Yeah, it's been up from over of the summer. And she's been doing that joke since I've known her. Right. She did it at the Unofficial Expert

Live that we did at the Ludlow House work. Also, she's doing Unofficial Expert Live tomorrow at Union Hall. Baby. October 12th. I love it. Okay, wow. So somebody tagged,

they tagged Mary Beth in it? Yep. Somebody sent it to her and then she posted it. It's a whole thing. Oh, wow. It's fine. What were you an expert in this week? I was an expert at getting played. Let's talk about it. So I was like, I'm going home. I was like, I need to get my hair cut, right?

I was like, I'm going to go get a cut. This guy that I went to high school with is a barber. He works at a hair salon. I was like, I'm going to have him do it. He's good. And I was like, I asked him if he was available. He's not available. So I was like, I'll just cut my hair before I go to my mother's house.

And so I walked to a barbershop. I just Googled barbershop. It's a no-no. I mean you don't do that I googled barbershop would you do that would you just google

a hair salon and just go to a hair salon if you had hair I just need somebody to hit me with a zzzz just zzzz men talk about this

all the time you can't just go to any barber well let's talk about it so I walked to this place it was like a Dominican place I was like I'm gonna go there

cause they be doing shape up tape ups fades you went to a Dominican they gonna give me they gonna give me a lightning bolt beard so I went the place was closed

I was like okay well I guess I'm gonna go to this other place like this black place the other direction I was like okay I'm going to go see the niggas. I'm going to support black businesses.

After the Dominicans were closed. After the Dominicans, it was closed. So they weren't even in there. The gate was closed. Everything was closed. So I go to this black spot. There's a man standing outside. And I'm like, oh, do you work here?

I just want to get my hair cut. And he was like, yeah, I work here. I can get you a cut. I was like, y'all take cards? And he was like, yeah, we take cards. And I was like, oh, great. So I walk in. First mistake.

He was outside. He was outside. That means he's not working. That means he didn't have no bookings. He had no clients, no bookings, no Nathan's. So I walk in, we walk in together, and there are two other barbers in the shop. One of them was working. The other one was on his phone.

I should have just went to the one that was working and been like, hey, can you squeeze me in after this, dude? Yes. But I was walking in behind this man. So he's like, well, how low do you want it? What do you want it to look like? I was like, I want the whole thing to be lower. I want like a little bit of a fade, like a tiny fade.

You didn't show him no pictures? No. I showed him no photos. Sis. Because sis, don't ever be prepared. Okay. So he's like, all right, cool. So he starts.

And it already feels different. Because when I shaved my head, the person who, when I first cut my hair off two months ago, at this point, I feel like, the guy that did it was this old black man who'd been cutting hair for like 30 plus years. He's like spraying it. He's combing it wet. He's brushing it with a hard brush. like he was doing stuff yeah this guy he just like combed it dry a little bit and then was like all right so what left and he was like and it was like it wasn't and then i'm like oh well is it too

late to tell you that i want a point in the back and he's like oh point not a problem he's too confident not a problem a diamond in the back no problem let me see bitch yo oh he gave you a point all right sis it was like and then i got home and we're gonna have to boomerang this but it's the the it's not even the length is not even anywhere it's all wrong i was in the mirror like he didn't even try Sis, you went to jail and got your shaver. Sis, literally I could have done this with my Venus. I could have nared this haircut.

You could have used your Billy. I could have used my, exactly. Your Billy Razor. I could have done better by myself. Anyway, so it was crazy. And then I left and I was like, I will never. I mean, I put a hat on and walked out. But I was like, I will never do this again.

Like, I'm going to go to other people's barbers. Like, people who, like, oh, my barber is on 3rd Avenue. Come see. I'm gonna do that since your hair journey hilarity I know but also

like I feel like I look better with it lower and I understand now why men get shape ups before they do stuff cause it

cause I used to be like it looks the same but now like I feel like it looks better so that you look fantastic it doesn't matter

you have the face for everything thank you for anything but not for this point though I don't have the girl he tried it he didn't even not try he didn't even try

Yeah, that was like the summer that sort of like started like the true like busy expert was you know doing that like it's eight shows a week can you tell us a little bit about what the show is about yeah so i i played usher not that usher not that one let it burn yeah let it burn i i played an usher at the lion king who was a composer writing the musical that you're watching so it was like metatheatrical funny heartwarming like it went off and it was a musical so i was singing i didn't leave the stage the other you were working the whole time i was working putting in the work it was a two-hour yeah yeah i would like walk up to

the stage and then be like this is the last thing i'm gonna see before i come down yes yeah and it's just gonna be like a blur so now so when you perform a two-hour play live show yeah are you nervous about remembering stuff or the order of things or you just kind of i mean the good thing about like the legit theater which that was which is like different than like like comedy i mean is it was like you they have a rehearsal process so like we were in there like making sure we had the time and space to really like make it like second scan kind of like you're breathing through it like it's just like dumb like like i'm just like at the point in my life where like i'm young enough i'm dumb enough like i like have the energy like somehow to do it so we're just cashing it in we

we've got like three weeks of rehearsal then we go into like technical rehearsals on stage yeah so like how long did it take you to remember the whole script yeah i was just doing it on my feet so like my process is to like you see this on my feet that means he wasn't doing no homework he had on house clothes outside doing no homework

as you know like when I leave the rehearsal room I'm going to the comedy club so it's like and then it's like 10 o'clock p.m. you need 8 hours of rest to sing so like you know it really like when I'm in the room I'm in the room and then I leave the room and I do what else is

in the next room you were constantly busy and you were running ripping the streets with me as well and you were prepping for this musical that i had no idea was going to be as big as it is yeah right because let's talk about who was showing up to the like oh my god oh billy porter emmy winner anna wintour editor problematic franco passed through alicia silverstone like and we i would just like walk up like towards the end of it like once like like same with cindy like i didn't know it was going to be a hit. I knew that it was the best piece of writing that you could possibly sit and

listen to in the city. You would turn down some stuff. It was so perfect. Turn down things for it. I was like, I'm not going to be on TV right now. I'm going to do my little play. My little play. I knew that the play was fire, and I'm just so happy that the white glitterati of New York received it. White glitterati. Alicia

Silverstone. When was the last time you saw her? Batman Begins? She's just out and about being a regular person. She's like, I'm here. she's just out at the play not vaccinating her kids just living her best life oh my god

okay the best was like how like after the show like how she approached each of us like normally people would be like they would walk up

and be like whatever and like say something about the show Alicia she was wearing all white as I was at the time after July 4th

my uniform like a nurse or a bride so I was in my all white she was in her all white she glides up to me glides white women

and just looks me in my face and what she does is she waits for you to recognize her and say the first words. Interesting. Yeah, she did it to everyone. Every single person?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And everyone had the same story and then I watched it happen. So what do you say? Oh, hey. Yeah, then you're like, can I help you? Well, because first you're like,

okay, you know what I mean? It's off-Broadway theater. So it's like, oh, here's another white woman. You know what I mean? Trying to give me some notes about my black ass play. No, I wouldn't assume that.

A celebrity would never. I don't think that a celebrity would have the nerve because they wouldn't want somebody to do that to them no but he's saying because she she comes up and just stands there and waits so for a second you're just like what is this late yeah this woman and woman right and then she gets like into the zone of focus where you're like oh this is alicia and then i don't know if i would recognize her right off the bat exactly which is what she loves and i think that's

part of it is that little bit of space that moment of like uh oh yeah that's just you literally just did it you literally just didn't lynn lynn manuel miranda came i think he's close to the egot yeah he yeah he loved the show and you had so many people like people were rolling tweeting and just i mean when i went there are you fucking kidding me like it was like it was it was absurd it was stupid it was absurd and how long did the show run for i think we're out there like set and done like eight weeks maybe and it was sold out every time yeah over 100 performances like that's like I paid real deal seats, you know? Oh, my God.

Listen, I bought tickets, and then there was a blackout. The Broadway blackout. The Broadway blackout. And I jumped in an $86 Uber. I didn't even know how much you paid. It was so much money, because I was like, I got to get into it. Because it was a surge, because nothing. It was apocalyptic.

None of the trains were running. Nothing was coming into the theater. It was very important to see you. I know. It was great just watching, because I don't really go to theater or anything like that. That's not my thing. But I went and as like just watching it and also being your friend, I was like, what the fuck? Like you were giving a thousand percent on stage.

And I was like, wow, this is for you. This is what you're meant to do. It's a different thing than like the comedy clubs. It's a different thing than like the personality driven stuff. Like acting like is a craft. Like it is a rigor. It's a craft that we have not mastered. We are not looking.

At all. and then on camera is like a completely different craft and like i just got fucking like beat up like i got trial by fired like coming off of the show all these cool people came connected me into sort of this like you know next slot of the of the of the you know career of hollywood yeah and so like you know then i'm on set like acting like opposite these greats and and just like trying to keep up let's talk about that

let's try to get it done yes okay so the play the play done play is done and then where are you what happens the play done

okay so the night of the blackout Ben from High Maintenance was there who plays the guy and so I'm gonna be on the next season so like I shot that

and then High Maintenance yes so like that was like and it was like an involved thing like I and DA

I can't really go into it no no no you don't have to but just in terms of like you know you have 200 people in an audience off broadway i know how to stand in a room i know how to like you know i know how to i know how to be in a room yes then that camera it's just a piece of glass it's a fucking machine right it doesn't have a soul right but like and on the other side of that

is millions of people you know what i mean like you know what i mean so it just shifts that and like so i was really like yeah i was just there's something there is something scarier about it almost because right we can get on stage in front of hundreds of people and tell jokes that we wrote in our living room butt naked you're in control of that but when it comes to like being filmed there's 12 people in the room and one camera you be like uh you stuttering my whole thing is about my whole thing is the edit what about the edit is you can do because you do a couple rounds or whatever whatever they want to put together that's what they put together that's what you're nervous about that's what i'm nervous about most times it's like whenever i'm like oh this went really

well i really enjoyed then i see the end the result of it i'm like what the how the fuck did you get what is this i'm gonna get the opposite like i like kind of like everyone on the on the hbo set like they were amazing and like you heard that the hbo they're amazing artisans like they like love what they're making there so hbo y'all hear us we know you're listening so it was just like amazing to sort of like release it being like okay I'm just gonna trust my

director give him everything I got lots of different you know takes on it and then some you know person who loves their job editing is gonna make it you know put the music behind you know it's like so yeah well yeah I can't wait to see it it's gonna be fun I can't wait to see it we're just putting shit fucking in the can

that's film speak for just you know filming it that's amazing it's truly amazing I think for me, when I do stuff on camera, I'm nervous. Like, I don't want to look bad in front of the six people who are in the room. And don't let there be a teleprompter. All of a sudden, I forget how to read and I forget how to breathe and read. And I'd be like, just it's not good. Which is crazy that Marie is saying that because, you know, we've worked together for so many years.

Yes, but something about reading a teleprompter to camera. It's hard. I mean, like legit, I forget how to breathe. Yeah. I'll be out of breath I'll be out of breath at the end of the thing and be like

it's just so disconnected but when I watched you on your show I was like Marie is really fucking doing this oh yeah that was because

I was like it's only seven people watching this I forgot after a while I would forget which is the energy that you have to give

on camera like I think that by so like Jaime that was like you know late July like early August

and I was like you know going to work scared like not you know what I mean like didn't like know how to reset

because you keep doing it and then by the time I was like I wrapped the film like a couple weeks ago I was just like you wrapped you was in a film

yeah I did I saw the play for a hundred nights in a row with Elisa Silverstone and then the HBO and then let's talk about this film that you just got back from

yeah yeah it's Todd Strauss-Shulson he directed Isn't It Romantic it's like a mindfulness comedy called Silent Retreat we're like dysfunctional friend group

and my mom and like we go up to a silent retreat and you know try to get our try to get our meditation silent retreat I feel like I read for that

I obviously didn't book you need to be in it this is me just finding out that I didn't book you I didn't realize that we were shooting that already okay so where did you shoot that we were upstate for like four weeks so I was just like on this like beautiful

like beautiful what do we even call it yeah like retreat center this is where they have weddings like these chic weddings it's like off the grid some goop things it was some goop thing so it looks very goop

and I goop and we goop and we goop yeah Lorraine Toussaint she played Tasty's like foster mother on Orange is the New Black you know her

she was like the bad guy yes you know French Haitian French you know Lorraine Toussaint we all know her yeah we all know she was my mom

Isabella Rossellini like iconic like was like the meditation leader who I had all my scenes with I'm like the I'm like addicted to my phone I'm a millennial

like and then she's like calm down but i got to like learn from her like it just like whenever we weren't rolling you know i was just like you know just talking this is amazing i know but i'm getting like little goosebumps because i feel like more of this is gonna happen for everybody in this room yes maybe even you andrew so i'm enthralled that was enticing yeah it's just like we still go to work and like the work is different and like we just like learn and grow like the same way that

you know i've like i watched you guys do last year was my first year in comedy i like watched you are rude sets like that i was able to be like no wait i like it i like how raw these girls are i like the spirit of what they do i like how they need the command and and and the content of what you're talking about and so like just learning and and shifting and growing and but you know what's cool about that is everybody had a first movie everyone had their first time on set right think about it right because meryl streep didn't just start out as meryl streep she had a first time that she was you know she was forgetting her lines and she was messing up or whatever and then like you know every and the people that we watch a lot of these actors we'd be judging them because

a lot of them can't really act and they keep getting movies i'm looking at you johnny depp but you think johnny depp can't act how dare you before saying jennifer lopez because you have this j-lo hustlers thing in your mouth that we like literally don't jennifer lopez really can't act though she can but she was great in hustlers She was not though Acting is not just crying Me and Marie watched that Acting is not crying

It's not just Meryl Streep It's not crying You don't have to cry To be a good actor You don't have to be Meryl Streep But J.Lo's acting Like I'm like Sis I don't care about you

In this movie I just want you to get caught I don't believe That you're a stripper I could not even believe That she was a stripper Like just make Cardi Be the lead

And leave me alone Yes I agree Okay that's that on that Andrew I thought Constance Wu Was honestly better Constance Wu

I still liked Jennifer Lopez Constance Wu and them thin ass eyebrows I was like what is that was that the right pick for the movie yeah well I remember that to me felt wrong when she went I don't like the casting at all no when Constance Wu went off on Twitter complaining

about that her show got renewed and everyone was like you're being a bitch Constance Wu but I finally like got it when I saw her in this I was like you are a good actress and you shouldn't be fresh off the boat you know yeah I mean at the end of the day I'm happy for Constance always there's a really fun tweet by Roxane Gate is basically like saw Hustlers

liked it a lot like Like J-Lo, what's your workout routine? Constance Wu needs to work on her craft. That's some good moments. And I believe in that as well. It's the best tweet ever. How do you go from crazy rich Asians to hustlers? Was she the main chick in Crazy Rich Asians?

somebody's like hey can you give me a tape you're like oh i already got that and then if they're like hey do you have like a script that you just like a pilot it doesn't have to be perfect just do you have it like all these things you've written yeah these things make you more ready than just like not having it absolutely have your tape have your pdf have your have your pdf have your pdf have your blur but also be ready to perform at any time right because you don't know where you're going to show up and someone's going to be like hey one of these comics uh is running late would love if you could you come up and do and it's like having both skills like it's not one or the other it's like it's like being ready to go like live and show up like and perform and

also like having that like weird like clerical business person skill of like organizing like yeah but i'm saying prioritizing you met the you met michael r jackson yes okay i was like michael r jordan michael r jackson michael r tyson i hate you but you weren't planning on meeting him you know what i mean you were somewhere doing free work and he happened to be there and y'all connected and then he made you the star of this thing yeah i read it and i was like i have to play the right to play this part so I'm just like just people

who are listening that are like waiting for the right like just go outside you're not gonna be nobody or book anything from your house no

you gotta go book shit it's a lot harder it's a lot harder and if you're someone that people like to be around then like putting

yourself in their presence is like it's the best calling card yeah it's just like be someone that people want to hang out with

some people are talented it's like who is this like cool yeah but also who do I want to sit across from for 16 hours a day or whatever many hours who's going to make this space better who's not going to make the room feel hostile and it's going to be fun like you right

I want to have fun so what are you doing to have fun Larry what are you that's actually a great question I think that like yeah I'm doing little purchases so I'm going to the theater like things that i couldn't do you know i could make theater but i couldn't watch it

okay classes of new york city obsessed it's so expensive as an artist being priced out of the medium that you work in but um i mean i think as a comic will i'll show up at shows and be like i'm a comedian and they'll like let me stand in the back in the shadows but you can't do that with theater you cannot do it with theater it's like and honestly there's a weird classism in theater that I really like want to with my like life's work eradicate because everybody like loves a song. They love talking and they love dance.

So that's all musical theater is. It's not this thing where it's like, no, you can't come in unless we have, you know, like let the bitches in, let people stand up until fire code. Pay $15 like it's the show and the rich people will pay the rest. Like the fuck?
