Starting point is 00:00:25 We'd love to talk. Business. You don't need AI agents, which may sound weird coming from ServiceNow, the leader in AI agents. The truth is, AI agents need you. Sure, they'll process, predict, even get work done autonomously. But they don't dream, read a room, rally a team, and they certainly don't have shower thoughts, pivotal hallway chats, or big ideas. People do. And people, when given the best AI platform, they're freed up to do the fulfilling work they want to do.
Starting point is 00:00:55 To see how ServiceNow puts AI to work for people, visit ServiceNow.com. into the Vox Media Podcast Network. We are here. We are back once again because Dana White promised some big news said he was going to announce the next nine events of the UFC calendar. And boy, he did that. But the big one, the one we were waiting for, was UFC 328. Coming up in May, what would be the main event,
Starting point is 00:01:43 especially after the UFC White House card was announced. And we found out it is for the middleweight championship of the world. It is Hamzaa Tchamayev defending against Sean Strickland, not Naserdin Imavov. Sean Strickland gets the nod after stopping Fluffy Hernandez in Houston just a few weeks ago. And many more announcements came as well. And thank you for joining us if you're still awake, still reeling from all the big news. And I got to say, definitely a. different way to announce fights it wasn't dana on a cell phone yelling and screaming reading off
Starting point is 00:02:24 an index card in a studio with brendan fitzgerald and michael bisming much better way more enjoyable way more professional way to announce fights they made it feel like a big deal they made it feel bigger than maybe it is in a lot of people's minds and i really like the way they did that but yes the prudential center in newark new jersey will have Hamzaa Chimae versus Sean Strickland for the middleweight championship of the world. They also made official the Alexander Volkov versus Waldo Cortez-A-Costa fight
Starting point is 00:03:00 that we had reported prior. Also announced Sean Brady, excuse me, Sean Brady, somebody Sean's fighting in Newark. Sean Brady versus Joachim Buckley was supposed to headline the April 25th event. That has officially been shifted to UFC 328. We also found out Janbovich versus Bogdan Gooscoff to the rematch after their majority draw.
Starting point is 00:03:22 That is taking place at this event as well. And then one, I didn't really see coming, and I probably should have thought about, King Green versus Jeremy Stevens taking place at UFC 328 as well. And boy, oh boy, there are a lot of other big fights and events announced. We also found out it is official May 16th. Arnold Allen versus Melchie Costa will be the main event at the world's most famous apex going head to head with the big Netflix card put on by MVP, their first MMA event headline by Rhonda Rousey versus Gina Carrano. So that is official.
Starting point is 00:03:59 That's a great fight. Featherweight divisions got some big main events coming up. Obviously, we were confirmed yesterday Al Jermaine Sterling versus Yusuf Salah, the new main event for April 25th. Then we also found out all these announcements are just running through my brain right now in all different ways. May 2nd, UFC Perth, we found out the co-made event. We were wondering what was going on with Benile Daryush. He is fighting Kill and Sal killed in the co-made event at RAC Arena in Perth on May 2nd. UFC Macau is now official for May 30th. Main event of that, Song Yadong taking on former UFC flyway champion Davis and Figurado. We also found out that Mingyang is back in the co-main event, excuse me, against Alonzo Menafield.
Starting point is 00:04:45 And also Sergey Pavlovich taking on Talasin de Cher on this guy. Talasin Desherr just keeps getting these big fights and big opportunities. And to cap it all off, June 6th, UFC Vegas 118, world's most famous apex, former UFC welterweight champion, Bilal Muhammad, will face surgeon contender Gabriel Bonfim. So a lot of fights announced, a lot of big ones. We got a title fight. Strickland versus Hamzaa Shamaif. Nasridaeimov.
Starting point is 00:05:19 Man, oh man. That, uh, it's got to stink for that, man. Like literally, heading into 2026, Nassadine Mavov was getting ready. We figured he was getting this fight. Imovov told me that they had offered two different dates for him to fight Hamzaat Shemayev in December and then again in February. Neither of those come to fruition. He sits back, watches Sean Strickland fight Fluffy Hernandez.
Starting point is 00:05:45 and now we have to watch Sean Strickland fight for the belts. So I wonder how Nasardini Mavov is feeling about all this. I wonder how his team is feeling about all of this. But I have to say, and I think most of you would agree with me, not surprising. Once Sean Strickland put Anthony Hernandez away and snap that long winning streak, I think everybody kind of saw the writing on the wall. We were getting Sean Strickland getting the title shot and not Nazardini Mavov. So a lot of fights, a lot of news, a lot of stuff happened.
Starting point is 00:06:15 Seems like some people are not happy about this. So let's see what you guys have to say about all this. And pretty wild. And then, of course, they talked about the White House event. I was wondering if they were going to announce that mystery seventh fight that may or may not happen. And nope, that did not happen. We didn't get anything else.
Starting point is 00:06:39 We just have the six fights. So let's see what you guys have to think. Or let's see what you guys are thinking about this. So you know, Hamzot versus Strickland press conference is going to be absolutely wild. Yeah, that is, that's an understatement. That is for sure. Joseph, how many of these fights you think were negotiated within the last 48 hours? It's a good question.
Starting point is 00:07:05 Hamzot Strickland was a thing for a little while. I actually thought they might announce that on Saturday during UFC 326. They did not announce that. But I saw a lot of people like taking. credit for this fight. This fight was a thing for quite some time, several weeks. It was not the biggest kept secret. So, yeah, this was kind of the plan.
Starting point is 00:07:28 Especially once the White House car was announced, we're like, oh yeah, we're getting Hamza v. Strickland in Newark. So JDX hums up by any way he wants. Perhaps. I actually like this fight. I like this fight. I did like the Imaba fight too. I think he presents some challenges.
Starting point is 00:07:49 to Hamzot, I would pick Hamzot pretty comfortably to win that fight, as I will be picking Hamzot pretty comfortably to win this fight as well. However, if Sean Strickland can get through the first seven and a half minutes of this fight, things could get very, very interesting. If Hamzot just goes full boars, take Sean down, tries to finish him and can't, and starts to wear a little bit, Sean doesn't get tired. He just keeps motoring and moving forward and just presenting that volume. difficult to take down he's got very underrated defensive wrestling i think of all the options at 185 pounds right now realistically for hamzaa shama if i do think sean strickland presents a very interesting challenge 20 million think they're releasing all these cards to distract you from the shitty white house card uh no because i think a lot of people are wondering if they're going to
Starting point is 00:08:50 make this announcement to try to take control of the news cycle in a more positive way, we would have gotten a Connor McGregor announcement. They would have announced July 11th, International Fight Week, Connor McGregor is back. Even if they didn't announce the opponent, they just said,
Starting point is 00:09:09 we've agreed he's going to fight on that card. That would have been a massive deal. It would have been a huge deal. That didn't happen. And I don't think anybody's really shocked by any of this. Honestly, like I said earlier, the most surprising fight of all. of these is king green versus jeremy stevens just because i just didn't think of that one not a ton
Starting point is 00:09:33 of hype for this solar serpent mohammed versus bonfeme like w tf didn't see that i didn't see that one either i still don't understand i saw belal mahomed i heard belal's name during the announcement and i was like oh he's definitely fighting kamar usman because that makes a ton of sense these guys don't like each other it's a big matchup usman wants to get a tight enough fight but hasn't fully gotten there yet. They didn't do it. But good for Bonfi, man. Just making his way up that ladder. This is advertiser content brought to you by Stonyfield Organic. Our cows, them going out to pasture, they love it. They're so excited to go out every day. They wait right at the door. And we milk them and we just open up the laneway and let them just go right
Starting point is 00:10:26 out to pasture. I'm Rhonda Miller Goodrich. And I'm a dairy farmer in Cabot, Vermont. Our farm is Molly Brook Farm. We're an organic dairy farm, and we are a supplier to Stony Field. Mollybrook Farm has been in my husband's family since 1835. We started our organic transition in 2015. We had 53 acres of corn ground, and of course we had to use herbicides and pesticides, and the soil was dead, really, for all intense purposes.
Starting point is 00:10:58 We stopped growing corn and stopped using herbicides and pesticides, and we seeded that down to perennial grasses. After that, we begin to see biodiversity in that soil again. To be organic certified, our cows need to be in pasture at least 120 days. I think the organic practices really benefit our animals. You know, having good feed, good water, a nice light area, That's what's important to us, and that's what's important to Stonyfield. Visit stonyfield.com to find Stonyfield organic yogurt near you.

Learn more at aboutamazon.ca. Solar Serpent likes the Salkild fight. Yep. I officially get not no point for that
Starting point is 00:12:18 because that was my pick for Kill and Salkild, but it took a roundabout way to get there, but we got there nonetheless. Oh, Forrest Daniels, Shemay of Strickland, fire. There you go. Newark PD is going to be busy May 9th.
Starting point is 00:12:40 That is going to be a wild event. So, luckily for our good friend Jose Youngs, he won't have to travel far. to get to this one. Follow Rob Thomas. Love the new command center. Look, Mike.
Starting point is 00:12:54 Thoughts on the overall Q1 vibe score in the UFC and MMA in general. D, it's super low. 324 wasn't bad. The main event was at least fun. But outside of that, man, there's been like little highlights here and there, but the vibe right now in regards to the UFC and because of the vibes towards the UFC overall in the sport,
Starting point is 00:13:24 it's about as low as I have seen it in a decade, probably longer than that. I don't remember a time where it was this grim when it comes to the fan base and how they view the product. And they're starting to see what we've been saying for the last couple of years. And people used to call us negative and said, oh, there's Mike and the M.A.
Starting point is 00:13:50 fighting crew just complaining about everything. No, this is, this is the effort we've been getting. And we thought with this new Paramount deal, they just blast out of the gates running, sprinting. And they haven't done that. Just lackluster events, very little efforts. Everything's about the White House. And, you know, they said our socks would be blown off once again. Greatest Card of all times, fear on steroids, all that stuff. Sox still on. The socks have not. come off this whole year with any of these announcements. So it's, it's hopefully they can turn it around because if the UFC is doing well and they are red hot, that's good for us and good for everybody else. We, we can all enjoy it together. We all have good positive vibes. And I came
Starting point is 00:14:36 into this year saying, I'm not going to be a grump. I'm going to be as positive as I can. And I am, God, I'm trying. I am trying. Will M.A. fighting be at the White House card. Of course. of course i don't know i mean i'm sure jose will be there are we sending somebody else i don't know uh joseph did bineal cut data off in traffic the guy can get no favors yeah i mean between look at the road cyril ghan has taken and look at the road benille der euse has taken it's crazy absolutely wild rate ufc 328 on a scale one to ten i mean the main event's good i like the main event i do like volkov wca i think it's a good fight brady buckley's a good fight those out of those five i'll say it's a b plus i especially in today's ufc in the year of
Starting point is 00:15:54 our lord 2026 this is this is pretty good that's a decent five pack right there those are meaningful fights i mean the the king green germy stevens fight is just so out of nowhere. But that fight's going to be a banger. That fight's going to be very, very fun. Two veterans of the sport, they're just going to go at it and chuck them. It's going to get wild,
Starting point is 00:16:16 and that'll be a really fun fight. So, yeah, I think all these fights have meaning for sure, and then you have Green Stevens, which is just really fun. So, so I see people saying Hamzaa versus Sean being another snooze fest, but I reckon Hamzaa could easily chaos Sean inside one or two rounds. Maybe. it's possible it is an interesting fight boston mike what are your thoughts on the announcements today besides hamzaa shamaia versus sean strickland price a plus product b minus talent
Starting point is 00:17:02 a plus i mean the price is a plus at least for us besides i mean i like 328 um i love the arnold allen melky cost to fight it's just a shame no one's going to watch it because everyone's going to be watching the Ronda Rousey Gina Corano card. But that fight's really good. Like that is a really good fight. The featherweight division is, I mean, outside of the title fight we got earlier this year, featherweight division is moving along over these next several weeks. Of course, next week you got Mozart versus Lorone.
Starting point is 00:17:42 That's a big one. Sterling Yusuf, Solal, and then we got Melki Costa, Arnold Allen. That fight friggin rocks. Macau is okay. I thought we might get, with the UFC should, I mean, the fact that I thought we're going to get, maybe they would sneak in a title fight. Maybe we'd get McKenzie Dern, Zhang Wei, Lee on that card. I thought we might get that as the co-main event for 328, but no, didn't get that there either. So I don't know when that fight's going to happen, but that we expect that fight to be announced at some point.
Starting point is 00:18:16 I thought we're getting probably two title fights at 328, but didn't happen. I'll say I think solid And then we get Blal at a random Fight Night at the Apex Main event Against Gabriel Bond Fem
Starting point is 00:18:32 It's a It's a B-minus Like pretty good Not spectacular But pretty good Should Imov fight someone else Or wait He should wait
Starting point is 00:18:44 He should absolutely wait Go to you in the under two Yep Yeah we I think we had already confirmed that one just kind of touch on this you're surprised it wasn't given
Starting point is 00:19:03 two title fights a little bit but you got international fight week coming up you have to have like backup plans for the White House
Starting point is 00:19:10 because knowing the UFC's luck and just kind of how things are trending right now there's you know you got to be prepared
Starting point is 00:19:20 that not all of this is going to go through I feel 329 is going to be Wilterweight Grand Prix of sorts now maybe
Starting point is 00:19:32 I'll be watching Arl versus Costa speak for yourself mister i mean if the ufc smart that is an afternoon card like that is a that is a a 1 p.m eastern prelim 4 p.m eastern main card they cannot do that cannot be like a night a nighttime card for the ufc because no one's going to watch it like that should not be a throwaway card when you have a main event that good uh what do you think about the cat is out of the bag regarding Dana White is just an employee and have no power to make any decisions about the matchmaking. I don't think that's true at all.
Starting point is 00:20:20 We've also known for quite some time that this is not Dana White's UFC in terms of the day-to-day stuff. It's been Hunter Campbell in that spot for a while. Dana is just sort of the face. But Dana also said himself that when it came to the White House card, the matchmakers presented him with a bunch of different options. And Dana said publicly multiple times, I'm the one who. chose the fights. It's me. I picked him. So he definitely has say. And I think Dana probably has
Starting point is 00:20:51 veto power as well. If he sees something he doesn't like or he likes something better, if Dana says, now do that instead, what are they going to say? No. They're going to listen to him. Of course. But Dana's been checked out of this for a while. And I think maybe giving him back that power might get him back in. I don't know. But he's so involved in the the Zufa boxing and the power slap and all these businesses he's running with the Fertitas and Nitro Circus and all this stuff like he's been checked out for for so long it's not even funny so but this is just the way that it is now you know people are starting to catch on what we've been saying for a couple of years now but take the good with the bad
Starting point is 00:21:40 I guess I mean that's just that's just the way of the land right now What do you think is going to be the biggest fight that happened at the end of 2026? Probably Ilya Islam. But if they can somehow wrangle a Connor McGregor Nate Diaz three fight, that would be pretty good. Joseph L.O.L.L. you really think, like, Dana wasn't going to do a car to counteract Ronda versus Gina after Ronda said Valentina was dumb for having an only offense? Well, I mean, they're probably contractually obligated to do so. but it's a fight night card. They're not bringing anything big with this one.
Starting point is 00:22:32 They're doing an apex card that most people aren't going to watch anyways. Like, I love Arnold Island versus Melcheseo Costa. I love that fight. And most people that are in this chat who watch MMA like I do and like most of us here in the chat do, we love that fight. But most other people, the ones who aren't hardcore fans, they ain't watching this fight. They're not watching it.
Starting point is 00:22:55 So, of course, they're going to put a card on. they're getting paid a shit ton of money to do it. Doesn't matter if six people watch it. Paramount's paying them a floppy trillion dollars to host that card in their building. So they're making a ton of money. Production costs are down. They don't have to travel anywhere. All those costs are down.
Starting point is 00:23:15 I'm sure Arnold Allen and Melchie Costa aren't making a big bag of money. So, yeah, it's a win for them financially. But in terms of eyeballs, like, they know no one's going to watch this card. Outside of, like, the diehards who watch everything. Are the rumors of Mosa are having visa issues for next week true or just social media BS? I don't know. I know that the rumors of John Silva fighting aren't true. That I can tell you.
Starting point is 00:23:55 But that's really all I can tell you. I hope it's not true. That would be such a bummer. We are alive with the sentiment of a lot of people right now. I'm so disappointed about where the UFC is right now. I've been a fan since 2012. It's a tough spot. In a world where God pulls out, do they call John?
Starting point is 00:24:22 Absolutely not. Was there a fight I wish was booked? No, because I didn't think we're going to get anything major. I knew we were going to get the Hamzat Strickland announcement. That I knew. We had a graphic made for that a week ago. We bore that car. We knew it was coming.
Starting point is 00:24:50 We knew it was coming for that event. We knew it. We knew that was going to be the main event that the headliner of all these announcements is going to be that fight. I thought we might get McKenzie during Zhang Wei Li. But again, this is kind of what I expected. But we got a lot of stuff. We got a lot of stuff.
Starting point is 00:25:15 Classic. Some were very good. Some were good. Nothing was like overly great. And it's better than shitty. So if this is Hunter's UFC, why doesn't Hunter catch more crap? Because Hunter's not out there preaching that we're the biggest sport in the world and
Starting point is 00:25:37 we care and if you don't like it, don't watch it. Hunter's not out there doing that. Hunter is behind the scenes making the deals. He's the one trying to get John Jones in. He's the one trying to get Connor McGregor back in the Octagon, trying to figure out a deal where he could stick around. Like he's the guy dealing with that stuff. And he continues to deal with that stuff.
Starting point is 00:25:59 He doesn't come out and do press conferences and say the things he's saying. He's not publicly shitting on fighters. So yeah. I mean, if you're crapping on the product and the matchups, in the events and the lineups, yeah, Hunter should take more crap. But Dane is the one out there in the public as the face of the company. As literally the face of the organization. There is not a fighter that is the face of the organization.
Starting point is 00:26:27 It is him who is the face of the organization. And he loves it. But with that, you have to, when things are going good, Dana gets the praise. When things are going bad, he takes all the crap. If God pulls out, you call Lewis. Unfortunately, I can't even, I can't even defend that right now. I can't. I'm stunned he's not on this card, though.
Starting point is 00:27:04 I don't know. Could you throw him in cable in there? Make a lot of sense. All right, take a couple more than we're going to get out of here. I got to go to bed. Joseph, appreciate the breaking news, Mike. I liked how they did it. Just wish Dana wasn't there.
Starting point is 00:27:24 I felt like the last five minutes was them justifying the White House, mainly the co-main event. Yeah. And once I saw there in a studio, I kind of figured that's what they're going to try to do. But again, actually, someone asked earlier, is there a fight that I wish was announced that wasn't? The seventh White House fight.
Starting point is 00:27:51 Who are the people focusing on developing talent? Those are the people I want to know. Does the UFC have a talent department other than Hunter and Dana? I mean, they got the matchmakers. Their talent department is the Contender Series, which is honestly why we're in the position we're in now. I don't want to go on my soapbox about back at my day, the Contender Series used to be awesome because it was.
Starting point is 00:28:12 But now, like, we know anyone that has watched the sport for a long time and has been a fan for a decade or longer, we know what the Contender Series is now. It's not the best fighters on the regional scene or fighting for a contract. It's, let's just throw them on the show and then we can sign a bunch of 12 and 12 athletes and then we can release the six figure fighters who we don't want on the roster anymore. It's why they're making all this money. It's a good business for them.
Starting point is 00:28:45 It is. And no one's going to stop them from doing it. None of the fighters are going to get together and change anything. That's just, that's just the nature of the beast right now. So, yeah, I know there, look, they've made some. good signings over the years. Like some, some fighters in Europe. Like when they brought Manel cop over, that was like such a big deal. And like, they're kind of few and far between now. But sometimes they, they see a hot prospect in KSW or something. They're like,
Starting point is 00:29:14 oh, this guy's pretty good. Like, let's bring them over. Or if they know they're going to enter a different territory, they try to bring in some fighters from that region and try to get them over a little bit before they head there. But yeah, for the most part, like, they didn't don't care about that because they can just do the freaking contender series and get a bunch of low-price talent on the roster to fill out these 8,000 fight cards that aren't great. I mean, it's pretty bad when you see a graphic on social media before every single event. Like, oh, there's 22 fighters who are contender series alum competing on the card. Like that's not a great thing honestly
Starting point is 00:29:59 It just shows like we're just All you have to do is fight All you gotta do is fight And be somewhat competitive and you're you're in Because even if you don't get a contract Like when there's a short notice opportunity Like these people are going to get the first phone call And they still are trying to make the ultimate fighter a thing
Starting point is 00:30:18 I still don't understand this infatuation With the ultimate fighter Literally nobody watches the ultimate fighter more people watch PFL than watch the Ultimate Fighter. That's tough. Even when they had Conn McGregor, the biggest star in the history of the sport on that show, they couldn't get people to watch it. But they still are trying to make this thing happen.
Starting point is 00:30:38 I don't get it. Plus, he nails it. After seeing the shape, John was in grappling Bryce, no way in hell he could replace Bobzar. He's probably in the 170s currently. There's no way he's not going to take that opportunity and cut 35 pounds to do it. No way. Oratio.
Starting point is 00:31:09 completely agree with you. I don't care about it to cut dead weight. I care about them signing every single fighter who fights on DWCS. Oh, no, I don't agree with that. But that's why they do it. While they came from contenders, Lisa May. Look, not all the contender series fighters are bad. There's some good ones.
Starting point is 00:31:37 But there's a lot of awful ones, too. There's a lot of fighters who are not UFC ready who got contracts. A lot of them. But there are some diamonds in the rough. Like, John Silva's one of them. Kevin Vaheos is another one Sean O'Malley Like there's plenty
Starting point is 00:31:54 The list goes on and on It's not like they're all duds But There was a time where First couple seasons Like you had to Deliver the goods Like there are guys getting like
Starting point is 00:32:07 First Round knockouts And not getting contracts Because they weren't ready yet But yeah I don't want to turn this into a Contender series Thing Anything else all right last thing we'll leave it at this
Starting point is 00:32:30 when do you think when people say tame your expectations on UFC cards we as consumers should demand the best like the UFC was known to do yeah you should you should but there's no stars anymore there's no stars
Starting point is 00:32:46 and on top of that like there's not a ton of options but that's just it's just a tough spot the UFC has a strangle strangle hold on the industry right now. There's nobody even giving them any kind of run for their money. And until that happens,
Starting point is 00:33:12 like as MMA fans, and I know I literally get DMs from people about like, I'll never watch this card or this stupid, we need this Netflix card to be well viewed and big. Like we needed to go over big. And I'm not saying that MVP and their new venture into mixed martial arts is Has the UFC worried or could have them worried anytime soon But if they drop a 20 million viewership number on that event
