Today, we're going to dive deep into the details of what you should consider before purchasing a custom suit.
You're listening to MoreStyle, a podcast to help you transform your image and transform your influence.
I have worked with a lot of clients and helped them design the perfect look for them.
So today, I'm going to give you the five secrets on tips and advice that I would give my clients
who spend anywhere from $2,500 to $4,500 on a custom suit.
If you don't know who I am, my name is Celeste Moore.
I'm a certified image consultant
and I help men and women entrepreneurs
master and craft their own unique style.
The first secret is that you need to make sure
that you are getting a core color for your suit.
What's a core color?
Core colors are usually those dark neutral colors
that are best for a business setting.
It also helps with creating your wardrobe.
So after every four by four color analysis that I do on a client, whether it's virtually
or in person, they will receive this 60 best colors for them.
And on the back of these colors, you'll see how to use it in your wardrobe.
So some of this is core pieces.
Some of this is basic.
some of this is pizzazz or accent pieces and some of this is just everyday wardrobe pieces so
a lot of core colors are usually these darker colors like I don't have real dark colors this
rust chocolate is probably one of the darker colors I have even for me it's a lighter navy
not a darker navy and these core pieces are what you want to create your business custom suiting
around. Each one of these core colors has a meaning behind it. So you need to understand too
that the effect of the color is very important. So again, core colors are usually like browns,
navies, grays, and they all have a business meaning like credibility, trustworthiness,
stability, professional, and even creative. So make sure that you are choosing the best color
when you're making your suit you can create a suit in the pizzazz colors or the accent colors
the brighter colors but honestly it's probably too bright for a business setting also we have
these beautiful light neutrals but that's too light for you you're going to disappear when you
need to stand out and be credible make sure to choose those core colors core colors are best
to use with jackets pants skirts dresses and even shirts and know that this is the best way also to
create a capsule wardrobe a capsule wardrobe if you don't know what it is is taking say two full
suits two jackets and two pants add an additional two pants five shirts some accessories different
shoes different belts and I can custom create multiple outfits with these couple pieces so say
you have 10 to 15 pieces we can create 50 to 100 looks this is amazing because you're saving time
you're saving money and you're getting your money's worth out of this custom suit you'll also
be saving the environment because these suits should last you 10 to 15 years they could last
you longer but I wouldn't recommend it I want you want to make sure to update that look every
five years the second secret is to understanding your primary and secondary style houses
now everybody has preferences on their style it's part of your personality DNA it's called
your style DNA. Now, you might like certain types of clothing, which is your preference in style.
Now, there are about five to six different style houses that I'm going to go over today.
To really understand your style, I send every client a custom questionnaire that they are able
to fill out for me, and I get the results back, and I let you know which of those six style houses
you are. You'll have a predominant style house, your dominant one, and you also have a secondary
one. And so this is important when you're creating the style of your suit. The majority of the
answers is the dominant house and the other one is a secondary. So let's go over those style houses
so that you understand a little bit more what I'm talking about. The first one is sporty and casual.
Think of sporty and casual as comfort comes first before anything else.
The second one is classic and traditional.
It's timeless.
It is refined.
Elegant is chic, classic, sophisticated, creative, and original.
These people do not follow trends.
They like change and are spirited.
Sexy and alluring.
You're sexy.
You're extroverted.
You like to show skin.
this however is an inappropriate style for any business setting the last one is dramatic and
striking you're bold you're an attention seeker you like dramatic pieces this information will
allow the designer and I to create that perfect look for you so for example if you have a dominant
classic house and your secondary is romantic then you're going to want to create a classic silhouette
with maybe a rounded collar and softer lapels.
This, you're incorporating both of your styles
into your suit.
So a softer collar and very shawl-like lapels
are more of a romantic look.
Think of a Chanel jacket, for example.
They've got no collar, right?
It's that round collar.
They've got really beautiful pearl
and it's elegant, but it's also classic and romantic.
versus a peak lapel like I have here, which is very elegant.
Also, knowing your style houses is very important when choosing the right buttons,
when choosing the fabrics, when choosing prints or solids,
and even choosing the inside of your jacket.
Although you could be very daring and have fun in the inside and no one know it.
Kind of a fun little tip.
All these details matter so that you are creating that perfect suit for you.
The third secret is to make sure that you're picking the perfect fabric not only for your
lifestyle but your style. Do you live in a four season climate or do you live in nine months of
summer? Knowing these things you're going to want to pick the right fabrics. If you live in nine
months of summer you're going to want to have breathable fabrics. If you live in let's say the
four seasons or colder climates you want to make sure that that fabric will actually breathe in
the summer and keep you insulated in the colder months also do you travel for work a lot of my
clients do and so we need to make sure that some of the fabrics don't wrinkle as much like linen
is a great breathable fabric but it wrinkles so bad you can have it perfectly pressed and you sit
one time in the fabric and it's wrinkled so keep those things in mind your lifestyle is very
important also make sure when you're choosing the fabric who your audience is because if you want to
have more of an elegant look then you want to make sure you have a little bit of a sheen to your
suiting material if you're a little bit more sporty or classic maybe you have a plaid maybe
you have a pinstripe if you want to add a little bit more demand and command attention. But keep in
mind if you are speaking on stage or in high-end media where there's a lot of cameras and lighting
you want to stay away from anything that's shiny or has a sheen to it when you are speaking on
stage or in photo shoots. Also stay away from pinstripes, plaids, any kind of print. When this
is an issue for you, believe me, your best friend is a solid fabric. You really cannot go wrong with
a solid fabric, especially if this is your first suit. The fourth secret is to knowing your
horizontal and your vertical body types. What does that mean? Well, I think we're all a little
familiar with your horizontal body types. There's about five to six, sometimes people say seven,
but I'm going to talk about the five main horizontal body types. Those are typically
a inverted triangle, a triangle, a rectangle, hourglass, a diamond shape, sometimes it's a
round shape. And knowing this is really important because we want our bodies to look proportioned.
The ideal look here is the hourglass figure for a woman and an inverted T for a man.
so obviously we all have different shapes and sizes but this is the beautiful thing about
creating a suit you can create the illusion of proportion also you have a vertical body type
that is from your head to your feet and this means either one of three outcomes you can have
a balanced body which is the preference you can have long legs short body like myself or you can
have a long torso and short legs. And ideally, like I said, we all want a balanced body. So
another portion of creating the perfect suit for you is going to be knowing these measurements.
Because if you have long legs and short torso, you want to allude that your torso is longer by
creating a jacket that's a little bit longer. So then you have this perfect proportion of two
thirds this also matters where to place buttons on the jacket how long to have the jacket what
type of pants if you can wear a straighter pant you need a wider pant it is so many things involved
in these measurements so make sure that you know those everybody has different body types and
creating and flattering your ideal body type and shape can happen if you know the right measurements
The fifth secret is to making sure that you get properly fitted for this suit.
Any great designer knows that you're going to be taking about 20 to 30 different measurements
to create the suit, sometimes more.
You should be wearing tight clothes that have thin material so that your designer can get
the proper measurements for the suit.
Like I said, everybody has different body types.
were all proportioned differently, but you can create the illusion of the perfect bodysuit
when you have all of these measurements. Also, make sure that you are getting a second fitting
and sometimes a third. This is normal and standard, but just to keep aware that you need to be going
through multiple fittings. You want to look great in a suit. You want to feel good in a suit. You
want to command attention in any room you walk in. This is not only an investment, but this is
a suit you will have for a long time. It's good quality. It's your style. It's your color. So
make sure that it represents you and your professional goals. This should be the perfect
suit for your personality, DNA, your style, and your body. If this was valuable to you and you
