Starting point is 00:00:00 What if I told you that business casual is the secret sauce to commanding respect and turning heads in any room that you walk in without overthinking your wardrobe? Whether you're pitching to investors, presenting on stage, or running a c-suite meeting, business casual isn't just a dress code, it's a power move. Today we're breaking it down with some celebrity style inspiration to help you visualize what a modern day business casual can look like. By the end of this episode, you'll not only understand what business casual means, you'll know how to use it to elevate your brand and your presence. So let's dive right in. You're listening to MoreStyle, a podcast to help you transform your image and transform your influence.
Starting point is 00:00:50 If you don't know me, my name is Celeste Moore and I'm a certified image consultant and I help entrepreneurs and C-suites discover and master their own unique style so that they can truly command any room that they walk in. So I know how to break the myth of business casual. Business casual isn't just a sport coat and jeans. It's a formula that's not a one-size-fits-all. It's about striking a balance between professionalism and approachability. We all have our own unique style, like a one and only Mona Lisa. Remember, there are never two people exactly alike. Even if you have the same undertone, even if you're in the 1 of 16 categories,
Starting point is 00:01:34 you all each have a unique set of personality DNA. Your style, your color, your energy all plays into factor. So just know, just like a snowflake, you are all unique. The problem is that everybody defines business casual differently. So it can truly be confusing. What does business casual in essence mean? For instance, Ryan Reynolds. He considers business casual sharp and tailored and elegant and classic.
Starting point is 00:02:07 He wears tailored chinos and blazers. Yet what Jennifer Aniston wears is completely different. Not just because she's a woman, but her style and her colors play a massive role in this decision-making. Jennifer Aniston has a polished, yet laid-back appeal with soft blouses and tailored pants. Ryan and Jennifer have tapped into the meaning of what business casual means, not only to themselves, but to their audience. For entrepreneurs and C-suite leaders, business casual is truly your branding tool. It is your branding power. It is your personal brand.
Starting point is 00:02:46 Like these celebrities, your outfit should say, I'm approachable, I'm confident, and I'm in command. Keep in mind that your job, your meeting, or presentation should really fit the brand of yourself and your audience. Make sure that you're not dressing too formal or too casual and to dress accordingly. Here's the key. You must understand company culture when it comes to business casual.
Starting point is 00:03:09 Business casual in a creative space such as tech may allow white sneakers with a sport coat or white sneakers with a button down. But in fields such as finance or law, a polished shoe as a driver or a small pump is a non-negotiable. Just like celebrities adapt their look to their red carpet events, you need to address your business casual wardrobe to your environment. Here's the core pieces, blazers. Take inspiration from Ryan Reynolds. He rocks a slim fit tailored blazer in neutral colors like gray or navy. For a softer, more approachable vibe, Jennifer Aniston, she often pairs neutral blazers with softer blouses. These are only examples and these may not relate to your own style. When you wear any of your dark neutrals or soft neutral colors
Starting point is 00:04:02 and add it with a touch of your style, it'll be a slam dunk every time. Let's talk shirts and blouses. Ryan's casual button-ups and Jennifer's soft, silky blouses both strike the right balance between professionalism and approachability. Pants and skirts. Channel Ryan slim-fit chinos and trousers that are a classic fit for men if that's the right style for your body type. and take a page from Jennifer's playbook with high-waisted trousers or a pencil skirt that's
Starting point is 00:04:34 two inches below the knee or two inches above the knee. For men, a polished boot is a little bit edgy. Driving shoes are less formal, and even a clean white sneaker can work for some events. Women can wear pointed flats or low heels to keep a polished and professional look. Like Ryan and Jennifer, keep accessories simple. A leather watch, minimalist jewelry, or even a clean belt can really elevate any look without overpowering it. Notice how these celebrities add neutral or earthy tone colors with a pop of color when needed. My 4x4 color analysis can really help you discover your own perfect palette. Your business casual look should reflect you as a leader in your community.
Starting point is 00:05:20 Let your personality shine through the small details, whether it's a patterned shirt, a bold print, or even a soft scarf. When you know your style houses, then implementing these pieces can help you define yourself and make you stand out from all of the rest. Aligning your style with your brand is so important. Brian's approachable yet tailored look matches his personal brand perfectly. While Jennifer's soft, feminine style reinforces her relatable personality. Your business casual look should align with your personal brand. Whether it's bold and innovative or classic and trustworthy, make sure that your personal brand aligns with your style.
Starting point is 00:06:03 Make sure you respect your company's culture. That is really important when it comes to business casual. Both Ryan and Jennifer adapt their style to the occasion as should you. Research the environment and audience and expectations so you can strike the perfect balance. Here are business casual mistakes to avoid. You'll never see Ryan in joggers on a red carpet event. Save that athleisure for the weekends. Business casuals still require some structure.
Starting point is 00:06:34 The thing you'll need to know to determine your dress code will be the time of day, who your audience is, and the message you want to send. Here's an example if you don't know what I'm talking about. Would you wear a ball gown to a lunch date? No, typically not. Only if it's required and it's a private event or a red tie. Then you would wear a ball gown in the middle of the day. but typically look at the time of day. Where are you going? Who is your audience? And what's the
Starting point is 00:07:07 message? Remember, you can be too casual and you can be too formal. Overdressing can make you seem out of touch. It also sends the message that you're too good or untouchable or not relatable. I always tell my clients to dress one level up from their audience, but sometimes this doesn't work. So another way to do this is to mirror your audience. For example, Grant Cardone was interviewing Kevin Hart and Grant Cardone wears suits and Kevin Hart wears hoodies. So Grant Cardone couldn't interview Kevin Hart wearing a three-piece suit when Kevin clearly wears a hoodie. So Grant Cardone ended up wearing a mock turtleneck so that he could mirror Kevin Hart as close as possible. Another mistake is to ignore the fit. Fit is everything. Even a simple outfit can look
Starting point is 00:08:00 elegant if it fits well. Please do not over accessorize. Keep it minimal. Statement pieces are great, but they can overwhelm the look. Less is more. Keep in mind the occasion and the message you're sending. Also, wear pieces that are in alignment with your personality DNA. Let's talk about commanding authority. When you're dressed appropriately, people listen. Business casual positions you as the leader. Just like Ryan and Jennifer, the command attention on the screens and those interviews. Business casual builds confidence. When you look good in what you're wearing, it shows. Confidence is magnetic and your wardrobe can help you channel it. When you look good, you feel good. The ROI of image. Your appearance is an investment in business. Your
Starting point is 00:08:47 look will reinforce your personal brand. So you want to make sure that you're really landing your personal brand, just like any other investment in your business. It's marketing, it's advertising, and it's advertising you. So make sure you always get quality over quantity. You get the right colors, the right style, and the right fit. And you will be commanding any room that you walk in. How to get started with business casual today. The capsule wardrobe, my favorite. Start with 10 essentials. Two blazers, three shirts, two trousers, one skirt if you're a woman, and two pairs of shoes. This way you can create that capsule wardrobe by mixing and matching those pieces without overthinking what goes with what. Because everything goes together. Create a new outfit
