Hello, hello, hello, and welcome back to the More Money podcast and happy new year. Welcome
to 2025 and season 20 of the More Money podcast. This is the season that's going to lead us
to our 10 year anniversary of me starting the show, which is wild. And a lot of stuff
has happened in the past week since I last dropped that episode on New Year's
Eve. I hope you had a really nice New Year's. I certainly did because my book came out.
My book came out. I'm still pinching myself. And because my book is now officially out
and I can kind of talk more about it. I mean, I'm going on a ton of podcasts, doing a book
tour, doing a media tour, doing all that kind of stuff.
What I wanted to do, something special for you wonderful podcast listener, is for the
next three weeks, I'm going to be sharing some short little episodes in addition to
some other episodes that will be me reading an excerpt from my book.
Which I mean, if you already have the audio book,
then you already know what that sounds like.
And that sounds probably like, you know,
a million times better than what's going on here.
I'm just gonna try to read it raw
and not really edit myself.
I'm just gonna read it and just a few pages
from some chapters that I think
would be really interesting for you to hear.
And so of course, the logical place to start is the introduction for my book.
So for this little episode, I am going to read a few pages from my book's introduction.
And if you like what you hear, then you can grab a copy anywhere.
Libraries also have them.
If you don't want to pay for my book, I get it.
You're not in a situation where you can afford to, and I totally get that.
Libraries are awesome and they have copies of my book, so go to the library and check
it out.
You can also just go to jessicamorehouse.com slash book, and I'm going to be putting information
also about my upcoming book tour that I'm organizing.
And right now I can officially say that the first stop is going to be in Toronto, January
31st.
That's a Friday, January 31st. And yeah, again,
jessicamorehas.com slash book. There's more info or I will have some info on my Instagram
as well. Anyways, without further ado, let's read part of the introduction to my book,
Everything But Money. Is it just me or do you ever get low on New Year's Day? Because I do. Every. Single. Year.
For whatever reason, at the stroke of midnight on December 31st, something triggers my body
to deflate like a grounded hot air balloon. My limbs get heavy, it becomes hard to move, and the only place
that's safe is under the covers. At the same time as my body turns to stone, my
mind starts to race, bringing to the surface all my failures from the past
12 months. You sure didn't earn as much as you thought you would this year. Ouch.
That's embarrassing.
You bought a house at the peak of a seller's market
and now it's worth $100,000 less
than when you bought it a year ago?
That's just damn right dumb.
You call yourself a money expert?
Wait, you're telling me you didn't pay off six figures
in debt in only eight months
and didn't become a millionaire by 30?
So what have you done that so special
to warrant any kind of attention?
Nothing.
That's what I thought.
That's some next level unhealthy negative self-talk
going on.
I know, I'm working on it.
Nevertheless, things took a turn at the end of 2022.
The week before I was supposed to fly back to my hometown of Vancouver, British Columbia Nevertheless, things took a turn at the end of 2022.
The week before I was supposed to fly back to my hometown of Vancouver, British Columbia,
for Christmas, I got COVID.
That meant spending the holidays at home
alone with my husband with no presents to exchange,
they had all been shipped to my parents,
and a socially distanced pre-made turkey dinner
from the grocery store. Considering the previous two Christmases had been ruined by the pandemic and government-mandated
lockdowns, I'd built up this visit to look like a full-blown Hallmark movie in my mind.
So when it didn't happen as I'd imagined, a dark cloud came rushing over me.
Everything I saw on TV and social media
was triggering. Everything was a reminder of how I wasn't rich enough, successful enough,
or young enough. I wasn't enough. But it was one particular post I saw on social media
that made me snap. I rate I started venting my
frustrations to my husband as I normally would but instead of sympathizing with
me he looked at me with concern. Why do you care so much? I paused. Um I didn't
have a good answer. Why did I care so much about what was going on in someone
else's life or career? Why did I waste so
much energy comparing myself to someone else's accomplishments that have nothing to do with
me? Why was I so hard on myself? This line of questioning continued for hours until I
hit a very vulnerable point. I was faced head on with a question that I'd avoided like, well,
COVID for years. What am I running away from? Okay, I'm going to end it there
because I honestly really could just read the whole introduction to you, but I
am not going to. I think my publisher would kill me. So that's just a little
taste of the introduction and what to kind of expect from the book.
It really is a personal self-exploration, partially, of me figuring out why have I been
so obsessed with money and success and everything that it touches, you know, pretty much my
whole life.
Well, you'll find out when you read my book, let me tell you. Well, thank you
so much for listening. Again, if you want to grab a copy of my book, check out your
local library or purchase it wherever you want. You know, shop local. There's some great
local bookstores or of course there's the big ones, Indigo, Amazon, et cetera. And again,
I'll have some links that you can check out, jessicamorhouse.com slash book. And next week we're going to kick off
kind of the season I said on that December 31st episode where we're going to do a relisten. And
I'm really excited for that to happen because next week we're going back to episode one, my first
ever episode, which was a solo episode. I'm going to relisten. I'm going to give some comments.
It's going to be really exciting. And then I'm going to share another excerpt as well.
So stay tuned for that and I will see you in my next episode.
