MORNING KOMBAT WITH LUKE THOMAS AND BRIAN CAMPBELL - UFC Vegas Recap, Ngannou vs. Ferreira, Tom Aspinall vs. Jon Jones | Full Episode | Morning Kombat
Episode Date: August 27, 2024Another Monday, another HUGE MK as the boys are back to FULL STRENGTH with BC and Luke both in studio for the first time all month. It wasn't a huge weekend of combat sports but the guys have a lot to... get to, nonetheless. At UFC Vegas 96, should Caio Borralho been awarded a stoppage victory over Jared Cannonier? What else stood out from the card? Now that PFL has officially started promoting Francis Ngannou vs. Renan Ferreira, what do the guys think about this fight? Tom Aspinall is going as close to scorched earth as he can when it comes to Jon Jones. Will this work in getting Jones to fight him (assuming he beats Stipe Miocic)? Why is Dana White so curiously in the tank for a fighter he’s routinely been at odds with? Shakur Stevenson has signed a two-fight deal with Matchroom Boxing and has his first fight on the card in Saudi Arabia in October. Was this a wise decision and, realistically, what is a likely second fight? Luke and BC also look ahead to Let’s to September 14th which sees #caneloberlanga going up against UFC 306. And we're back at full strength, baby.
The batteries have been recharged.
Give them motherfuckers a blast from the past.
Day is back up on that ass.
What's up, everybody?
How are you doing on this Monday morning?
A lot to get to.
We will talk UFC Vegas 96.
We're going to talk about some Jon Jones. We're willing to put our hands in the fuel hole of our listeners today.
Willing to have a good time. Yes. Willing to have a good time. Yes. Consensual
or not, Luke. But we're back
in studio right here in New York City. So thank you so
much for joining us. We greatly appreciate
BC back from his
European vacation. Did it go similar
to the Chevy Chase European vacation?
Remember he knocked on the door and he's like, my family and I are looking
for sex. But he thought he was saying number
seven. You know, it's a great moment in my history.
Yeah, London and Paris, as you said to me over text, turns out they are world-class cities.
They are great.
I don't want to dirty dancing you, but I did have the time of my life.
Yeah, I've never felt that way before.
Dude, Paris, I mean, London already ruled and I knew this.
It was a hit with my wife and kids, but Paris rules.
It also sucks, but the part that rules in Paris rules.
What was the favorite part for you?
Montmartre and the artist's village atop the mountain with the old churches there and just that old European vibes and everyone smoking cigarettes and eating gelato.
Yeah, it's just, you know.
It's pretty great, right?
It's a lot of Pepe Le Pews around there.
It's really nice.
It is.
It's a lot of sexual assaulters. I don't know about nice. It is. Those are my people. Sexual assaulters.
I don't know about that.
They retired that character.
Yeah.
It's also overly commercial, and the Olympic infrastructure still takes over a lot of the city and gets in your way.
And also, it looks like they put lipstick on the pig aggressively is really what I'm trying to say.
Okay.
And you were right.
A lot of the food sucks.
It's hit or miss in Paris, and when it hits, it hits.
The thing is, food in Paris is obviously tremendous,
but it is uneven if you're just walking down the street
and you don't know where to go.
The places that look the nicest
are inevitably the most tourist trappy in terms of the-
How many times did you go to a place
where they had pictures of the food on the menu?
I didn't.
Okay, good.
All right, yeah.
They do that a lot. When I went to Turkey, there's a lot of places in Turkey that menu? I didn't. Okay, good. All right. Yeah. They do that a lot.
When I went to Turkey, there's a lot of places in Turkey that have that shit on there.
And I'm like, I'm not going to eat at your establishment.
No, I will not eat.
Oh, I met a donk, too, in Paris.
Yes.
Shout out to David from Toronto who stopped me with his Colombian wife, and I made a really
weird BBL joke, but it was great.
It was good humor.
One of my favorite things that you do on these trips, you're like these uh well london's great or uh luke paris is
great they don't like my humor here and i'm like and i'm like dude that's several cities now where
you're telling me they don't like your shit so i would come across in paris vendors who were
certainly much more happy to be doing their job than the service workers in your great city yes
that's true but once i realized that
they knew a bit of english i would go into schtick mode and i was like oh for 44 yeah they don't get
there was a combination of no selling and just i don't have time for this bullshit could you move
on yeah i mean i'm not i'm not super experienced in france but my understanding is the parisians
are a little bit more they don't suffer fools gladly than the rest
of France, which apparently is quite nice.
Yes, yes. I did touch base with
Appy, but we didn't cross swords while I was there.
It was probably good for my... Well, if you did that with your family
there, I would question your judgment. Yeah, yeah.
I don't know if you can wash that off. But you know
the Eiffel Tower? It turns out to be awesome, Luke.
A lot of these... Did you go to the top? I did not.
What? But I spent a lot of time around it
in the Arc de Triomphe, which I remember fondly from my French days.
You have to go under.
You can't walk across.
You have to go underneath.
Absolutely.
On the Champs-Élysées, Luke.
And I really felt like I was in my element.
There's just a lot of artsy weirdos there.
And those are my people.
Last thing on this is, did you notice how many European cafes where everyone sits outside and they just face the road?
Like, no one faces each other like they do in the States.
They all kind of face to the outside.
Yeah, I'm with you on that.
You know what?
It looks kind of weird the first time you go, and then you're like,
they just sit here.
They smoke cigs.
They judge Americans.
They drink excellent coffee.
That's their life.
That's their passion.
It's a simple life, but it's a good one.
It is a good one.
Yeah, I will give you that.
I next want to tackle Ireland and Scotland.
I want to complete that area.
Because they speak English there?
No.
You know what?
You know me.
I'm a donk traveler.
I'm very much an idiot.
I very much rely on my wife's organization.
I handle the directions.
I'm good on that.
But everything else, I'm like an idiot.
This gave me the confidence in Paris.
Even though I'm navigating a language barrier that wasn't that much of a barrier.
There is a lot of English being spoken around there.
I felt the confidence that I can rent a car, drive across the country and just go for it.
You probably could.
Last thing on this.
Did you see Craig Jones went to Cartagena?
Yeah.
And then him and Luke Rockhold had a room full of women of the night.
I think they bought like 50,000 whores.
I'm not kidding.
I think that they really, but Apocos is what they call them, prepaid.
They could have been friends.
I don't know, but I'm guessing.
Yeah, we should have Coach Craig back here to just recap that evening.
I mean, when you're hanging out with the shirtless Luke Rockhold
with that many women of the night, things are going to happen.
Yeah, he and I have very different experiences in Cartagena.
I can put it that way.
All right, we have a lot to get to here.
Thumbs up if you're watching on YouTube.
Hit subscribe if you haven't.
Thank you guys so much for joining us.
BC, did you get a chance to watch the fights oh the 305 fights well
no uh the ones over the weekend i'm completely caught up on ufc fight night apex which actually
pretty damn good card not a bad card let's let's start the show don't ask me anything about 305 i'm
not there yet okay i'm not there well let's start with did izzy win did i was showing you i'm kidding
i saw the results uh he fought decently but no but it was that meme true that they posted on mk reddit that i saw on
my vacation of the toy story and dropping the toy and luke is done with is he like i don't know if
i don't know if it's quite that dramatic but um you have moved on your all of your loin filled
emotions toward toporia for falls. Shavkat's waiting.
You've got a bonus for Shavkat.
Shavkat is also waiting in the wings, but he's just been a little bit inactive.
It's probably fair to say
that's probably fair to say.
I can identify your lust.
You'll watch the fight, and I'll be curious to get your
impression afterwards. My sense was afterwards,
like a couple days afterwards,
you really get the sense that, like, we said this on
Monday's show, he seemed
at peace with the loss in a way
that only kind of tells you
that he's already climbed the mountain.
Yeah, that's right.
It's less that I'm rejecting it
more than I'm like, I think this thing is kind of naturally
coming to a close. He'll take another big money
fight, another big challenge. If he can get
Poetan again, I'm sure he'll do it.
He might get another big win, but his time as an elite guy,
I think that's kind of come to a close.
Maybe for Jared Kananir, too.
We'll find out right now.
All right, let's talk about that.
All right, topic number one, here we go.
UFC Vegas 96 took place where else?
At the Apex.
We're not going to get into all of that,
but we do want to talk about the fight.
BC, Kyle Behalio wins via unanimous decision.
Really not much of an argument.
I think all three judges, at least certainly two of them, gave him a 10-8 in that fifth.
Right.
To be fair, it was a 2-2 fight on one of the three scorecards entering round five.
The other two judges had it 3-1.
Yeah, which is, I think, fine.
Yeah, I had it 3-1.
You could argue 2-2.
You could argue that.
All right, first things first.
I'm going to ask you about the stoppage in just a second.
But more than that, I want you to answer this question.
How impressive to you was this victory by the resident middleweight contender of the Fighting Nerds?
Huge.
Really huge.
And let's be honest about where he's at.
Unbeaten in this run in the UFC.
Nice stoppage win over Paul Craig.
But he came in in a posture that thanked Jared Cannoneer during the pre-fight
handshake. Why? Because there's a number 12
guy who gets an opportunity to fight
number 5 guy with title
level experience in the main event
and a chance to go 5 rounds. So why was
I impressed? The 5 round stamina
that he showed. That's a big hurdle that he had to clear.
He cleared it. The technical
application. Luke, he won the fight
with his jab for the most part.
There are things that he exposed in Cannoneer that I can get into,
but I love how he came out there with that power jab to set the stage,
really worked those leg kicks in round one,
showed you he can adapt as Cannoneer inevitably got himself back into the fight.
But I saw stamina and I saw toughness,
because even though I didn't think this was anywhere close to,
you know,
the best performance of cannon there,
or even the best possible performance of where he's at in his career,
there were some parts of his game.
I was frustrated with,
but he did eventually get his shots off.
He did test Kyle's chin to find out whether he belongs here or not.
And Luke,
we can make arguments about who we ultimately called out the champion DDP
and whether that was the right time.
It seems a little premature,
but this to me was a big splash that I'm ready for the deep end of this who we ultimately called out, the champion DDP, and whether that was the right time, it seems a little premature.
But this, to me, was a big splash that I'm ready for the deep end of this pool in this division.
He's got aggressive tattoos.
He's got aggressive victories over lesser-named guys.
But he had to go in there against a real veteran,
a guy that you're not going to just out-hustle and all of that.
And, Luke, he took his best shit.
He had himself cut open, and it didn't even matter.
He scored takedowns.
He did.
I mean,
there were very little ground play here,
but he did everything I could have asked of him short of stopping
cannon Aaron boy.
Did he come close?
And there's an argument there.
I was extremely impressed because you're not going to look good against
cannon here.
I know he's 40.
I know this is the second straight stoppage loss,
but you have to earn it.
If you're going to go in there and win it that way.
And, Luca, he stood in front of him and earned it.
You've got to give him that respect.
I echo your sentiments completely.
I thought he stood in front of Kananir, as you indicated.
He got that big cut under his right eye,
which was still bleeding during the post-fight press conference.
He showed great defense for the most part
in terms of what Kananer was throwing at him.
You could see him.
He brought the hand up, and he would kind of shoulder roll a little bit either side
depending on what was being thrown.
And I was waiting for Cannoneer to adjust.
I'm like, Cannoneer, he keeps blocking your hook.
You got to go straight.
You got to go straight.
He never did.
It was frustrating.
That was frustrating.
It was a little bit hard to watch.
Nevertheless, nevertheless, the point I wanted to make was if you look at his fights bc and i was like how many times has he gone for the
takedown in fights so in his contender series debut which he won via decision they made him
fight another one another time this was back in 2021 when they were still like trying with the
series he had three takedowns they made him have a follow-up like a month later and he won that in
like a minute and so he didn't have any takedowns there. But after that, Omar Gadziev, he had a takedown.
Armin Petrosian, four takedowns.
Against Mahmoud Muradov, takedown.
Against Michael Oleshashik, three takedowns.
But in his last three, Abus Megamedov, Paul Craig, and Jared Kananier,
I think he attempted one against Kananier,
and he attempted one against Megamedov, but didn't get it.
But he had no takedowns in his last three,
and he's won two of those via striking stoppage.
This is, to me, evidence.
This is what I want to see.
You've got to bring the game that you have with you to the UFC,
and you've got to make sure that that's something you can win with.
You're ace in the hole, right, or ace up to sleep,
whatever the proper metaphor is.
But you have to be able to grow.
You have to be able to grow, unless that one skill is like lights out dominant, and his ground game is very,
very good, but it's not like Habib over the lightweight kind of good. He can win fights
with it. He can win exchanges with it. He can win rounds with it. He can win championships with it
potentially, but it's not like that kind of dominant game. So what he's done is begun to
round out the other thing.
And we talk about it all the time.
Like Mackenzie Dern is not afraid to mix it up in the pocket, right?
Mackenzie Dern will take a shot to get to a better position, but is not necessarily delivering back on the development,
on the striking that you would hope for.
Well, this guy is.
Of course, he's not in jujitsu what Mackenzie Dern was,
but I'm pointing out somebody who had a bit of an A game,
now look at their B game.
We talk about this all the time.
You can win championships with a dominant A game,
depending on how dominant it is.
A Habib at lightweight, an Izzy at middleweight.
Ronda Rousey.
Ronda Rousey.
You can do that, but that eventually will come to a close.
What is your B game?
And now you can begin to see this.
Now, I don't know if he's going to ever fight for a title.
He was ranked 12th, by the way.
Now moving in, Kananir was sitting in the fifth spot.
It is likely he'll get fifth or approximate to that.
So now he's in a different place in the division.
But the courage he showed, the development he showed.
Confidence.
The confidence.
Just a different aura and demeanor to how he acted.
Even in the post-fight interview, there were a lot of things I was very impressed with.
It was mature.
Jared is 40, and you're right.
Coming off that Imavov stoppage loss, not great.
But he's still heavy-handed.
Oh, yeah.
Don't forget, this is why I like what—let me say it right, because I used to butcher it,
and then I heard Bisping butcher it about 4,000 times on the broadcast, so I can say Boraglio.
I don't have to say Boraglio every time.
Boraglio. I don't have to say Boraglio every time. Boraglio.
Boraglio ultimately showed me not just the cut, but he got rocked
in the second round by Cannoneer. Big shot.
On some big shots, but not overly
crazy shots. Shots in the flow of it.
And his way of centering
it and getting back on task, it was very
mature. There was a lot that I loved
intangible-wise in here. And dude, it all
went back to the basics. That heavy jab was such a difference maker.
And I'm so glad you brought up the second round because he did lose the second round, no doubt about it.
Even if he had a 2-2, if he had a 3-1, the 1 would be a round 2 for Kananir.
Yes, all three judges gave it to him.
But this is what I mean.
Kananir had a good second round.
So here comes the veteran pushing back on Behalio, and he withstood it,
then reapplied his game in the third, was cruising in the
fourth.
And then, of course, it takes us to the fifth round where he hits him with the, I think
it was the hook and then the one-two.
And the one-two was absolutely vicious.
And it rocks Kennedy real badly.
So my question back to you on this one would be, was Big Dan referee, Big Dan Murgliata
was the referee?
Who probably has taken out.
I mean, you know, we're talking about Japanese restrooms, Luke.
Yeah.
At a hotel.
Godzilla.
Just.
Godzilla.
Wow.
He's just Godzilla Tokyo.
I'm sure he's done it.
Big John would only tell the truth on this thing.
You ever seen Big Dan in person?
No.
Dude, he's like much bigger than me.
Okay.
Like he's huge.
He's a huge guy.
Did Bojalio get robbed of a stoppage victory over Kananir?
Yes, I think so.
I think overall, watching the replay multiple times,
if what you're looking for specifically is did Kananir go out, then yes.
I don't hate on Big Dan in this case for not being able to identify that
in the moment because things move so quick,
and quickly Kananir did sort of pop back to life.
He got hit with a ground strike,
and suddenly he was defending himself responsibly. And I think, Luke, the only sort of popped back to life. He got hit with a ground strike, and suddenly he was defending himself responsibly.
And I think, Luke, the only sort of,
if I want to criticize Bojalio and what he did after that,
was him going for the choke when he had Kananir very badly hurt.
Now, he gave Kananir, in my opinion, a chance to survive.
So that was the only sort of bad takeaway.
Did he get robbed of a stoppage?
Most likely, I think he did.
But I think it's happened so quick in the moment.
Bang, bang, referee's not going to get a chance to see that replay.
It's the final round.
I don't look at it as a big referee smearing that he blew it,
but yeah, when you slow that down and you watch it,
it looked like he knocked him out.
And Luke, outside of the fact that he came in here,
canineer, fresh off a stoppage loss to Imhovov,
guys don't do that.
And the guys that can put their hands on him
and hurt him like this are usually top-level guys.
So I'm not saying that Bojai becomes that with this victory.
But you said it in the idea that he's going to now be in a different tax bracket.
Now being now courting top five competition.
Dude, he answered a lot of potential questions that I would have had.
And that's exactly what I think you would want out of this performance, out of this main event.
And Luke, I've been very critical for a while of the matchmaking of particularly the Fight Nights
and the Apexes.
Really enjoyed this one.
This one was good.
This one was really good.
So I think ultimately it's a thin line
where it goes from acceptable to unacceptable.
I think as long as UFC figures out that thin line
and figures out how to stay on the good side,
you need a main event worth staying up for.
I thought this main event was worth staying up for.
Now, technically, I fell asleep.
Co-main, not so much.
I fell asleep before the co-main, technically, Luke,
to be honest with you, from the travel fatigue and all that.
But this was worth trying to stay up for.
When you get Spivak and Tebera, it's a joke, right?
On that level, that should be the fourth fight from the top or whatever.
But as long as they have a main event worth staying up for
and a consistent mix on the undercard,
which they did have, of risers who we're staying up for and a consistent mix on the undercard which they did have of risers who
were about to talk about who made big leaps friendly tv fighters fighters think slava
claws think meerschaar these guys are probably more often than not not going to get to the top
of the heap in their division but you put them in matchups that create the type of fun we saw
i always thought sometimes on these low level fight night cards that you need one of two things
or maybe both to have a great time a propensity to abuse marijuana or a gambling addiction a lot of people you know long island
look you would say you combine you combine both of those right also as he rules luke that's your
entire life that's literally every night of my life and you know i may have had one of those
two going on as well but i'll say this luke it's not that hard to actually get it right obviously
you need the fights to perform but i really enjoyed this card i really enjoyed a lot of the fights and the fact that it ends with us really learning something,
in this case, about Kyle Bohagio and the way that he promoted the fight nerds
and that this seems to be a new camp on the way up that is really making some noise.
This was a great night out at the fights.
And I think even in this era of watered-down UFC matchmaking and the stretching out of the schedule to fill it
I think if they just make a little couple tweaks like this we can
have this consistently right even if it's at the apex which
we don't prefer and love it still was a good
night out at the fights watching it from home I still
feel like they have to trim some fat from the roster
to really get this because as long as
those guys are on the roster the ones that shouldn't be
there they're gonna have to get fights
so you're gonna have to kind of muddle through that so
yes and no what I will say is getting back to the bahagia thing if i may i wanted to like
run this by you see what you thought should that fight have been stopped um you definitely can make
a case for it but you need the replay don't you to really see it so here's where i'm going to come
down on this some of you think this is an accurate way to look at or a reasonable way to look at it, perhaps. In Major League Baseball, when they have umpires, what
they don't expect is that every Major League umpire sitting behind home plate will have the
exact same strike zone. They do not expect that. What they expect is that if you have your own
kind of strike zone, that you as an umpire stay consistent to that but they don't expect one guy on monday to
have the exact same strike zone as a guy on tuesday it's not realistic in a similar vein what i would
say is do i expect for example mark smith to have the same kind of strike zone in terms of stoppages
as big dan mergliata no i don't i think they have their own kind of sense about it within the
universe of dan mergliata like stoppages or non-stoppages this actually kind of makes sense that like he lets things go
typically typically typically more and i'm going to say this has not always been the case but in
the last few years i think he's going to be the kind of one who errs on the side of letting it
go a little bit longer and cannonier's got a history dude by the way cannonier ended the
fight on his feet i mean that guy is a fucking beast.
And I believe Whitaker almost had him out, and you could have stopped it too.
Exactly.
But Kananir bounced right back.
So you have that history.
So what I mean to say is I think it should have been stopped.
But as long – I push back against the idea like, oh, we don't have consistent standards.
Well, right.
From Yamasaki to Murgliata to Smith to whoever, Chris Taione,
you're not going to get consistent stoppages.
Within the universe of themselves, the question is,
do you get consistent stoppages?
And this is fairly consistent with what Big Dan has done in the last few years.
Does that make sense?
I'm more than fine with it.
All right.
Very good.
Now, with that being said, BC, he called out Drikus Duplicy.
That's a little aggressive.
It is.
Not that he doesn't deserve a big fight.
I think he does.
I mean, there's an argument to be made that if you're coming on and he announced that
he's coming on with this performance, right?
Yes.
That you do want to shoot for the stars.
And if you get anything less, which he has to expect to, he doesn't expect, he can't
expect to be the next person in line.
But I think the argument, so I'm not against the aggressiveness.
I'm not against the ambition of that call out. i am against into some level the realistic nature it's not
gonna happen realistically will this mean though that he'll automatically get a top five matchup
next does he deserve it can you make the leap from 12 to 5 with one performance and then suddenly
expect to be getting former champions you know what i mean where where should the net what is
the perfect next fight so let me read to you the top five. Sure. Now, obviously, Drikus is unranked because he is the champ.
So number one would be Sean Strickland.
They probably have a future deal.
He's getting the next title, yeah.
Two is Izzy, but who knows when he's coming back.
Three would be Robert Whitaker.
He's got a date with Hamzat.
Four is kind of interesting.
Four is Nasruddin Imavov.
That might be one you see because both guys are coming off of wins over
Cannoneer.
In fact, I think that's probably the likeliest one and five was cannonier.
But then after that is Marvin Vittorio and Brendan Allen.
I got to tell you.
Oh,
they just fought in the PFL casino lobby.
Did you see that?
I was like,
dude,
nothing is more Florida than the PFL holding a fight.
And you can't remember who fought on the card,
but you can remember two UFC fighters slugging it out in the casino floor
afterwards.
I'll have to tell you, to me, they probably will do the Imalval fight, but the Brendan
Allen equation to me is so much more interesting.
Okay, so you could have easily said the loser of Whitaker, Chimaev.
If it's Chimaev, do you really?
I don't know about that.
Okay.
I just don't.
Chimaev's in a weird place.
I feel like if Chemaev beats Whitaker,
then the UFC's going to really prioritize their schedule in a way to keep him active.
Let's say Whitaker goes in there and weathers a storm
and then beats the bags off this guy.
What's his future after that?
I don't know how to answer that.
I hear you.
I'm not saying that he doesn't have one.
I'm saying what is it? I have no clue. You could say the same thing if Robert Whitaker loses to answer that. I hear you. I mean, you can say the same thing. I'm not saying that he doesn't have one. I'm saying, what is it?
I have no clue.
I mean, you could say the same thing if Robert Whitaker loses.
That's what I'm saying.
If Hamza goes in there and looks good, I think they're going to make a real push for him.
Sure.
But if he loses, it's like, I don't know what he is at that point.
If I can salt and peppa you in 92, let's talk about sex, Luke, right?
Okay, well, this took a turn.
The sex matchup, if you're willing let's hear it
holocausta against behalio yes are you willing that's a uh i don't hate it i don't hate so
wait so wait you want to do vittori versus brendan allen too in the cage this time yeah
they might have just signed they might have just built the i feel like the ufc is gonna be like
fuck it we'll just you think they should they should right they should what about paulo costa and him and you
maybe even put it in brazil on a main event so costa is sitting at eight right right underneath
alan you could do it you could do it it would give him meaning uh bojalio especially if he
could win it and it's certainly a matchup he could that would give him a celebrity splash
right wouldn't that wouldn't that i feel like if homzat loses to Whitaker, you do Hamzat-Paulo Costa.
Like the guys who were the big scary guys next thing coming,
and now you're like, what's left of them?
I don't really know.
It is.
It's a no-lose situation.
Why?
Because even though it's not the best division right now,
and even though it's not the deepest right now,
and I think Bantamweight still holds that mantle,
there's still a lot of people like Jed Meshew II, Luke,
who believe that lightweight never left as the best division out there middleweight's the most
interesting it really is so with the new contenders coming up it certainly is no even at the title
picture it's incredibly interesting with ddp strickland dizzy okay whitaker like i don't okay
but like as a fight strickland versus duplicy two is not like oh my god i can't wait like no no take that back
the first fight what was that a split majority or maybe it was split in five rounds thriller they
both made adjustments okay okay not not fight of the year thriller but a technical thriller in a
sense um okay no you do that in south africa that's a different story put in south africa i'm
okay with it but my point is this.
Sean Strickland has a way of making fights trench warfare
where we're just lobbing these shots at one another
and some get through and some don't and it's a hard slog.
I really don't think you can call those thrillers.
You can call those tough technical battles.
Thriller is a very strong word.
But technical thriller, combining the two words,
that gives you the indication that it was a chess-ish match
that got exciting and had ebbs and flows.
Yeah, I'm okay with that.
But even that, that's about as generous as I would give it.
Okay, you didn't enjoy it?
Were you not entertained in that first fight?
Come on.
Not a lot.
Entertained?
Really seeing two high-level guys?
Can we bring in a third party here?
No, no, Luke.
How entertaining was Strickland versus Duplicy 1?
I think it was pretty entertaining.
It was a back-and-forth war.
I had DDP pulled it out.
He said war.
He said war, Luke.
War is also a strong word.
I mean, what is it good for?
But wait, I wanted to say that Allen is fighting Imavov next month in France.
Oh, how did we forget?
Yes, you're right.
But I love the Brendan Allen matchup,
regardless, win or lose against Bo Halle.
Good correction, by the way.
I completely had forgotten about that.
We've got to move along, because, by the way,
Danny Segura's going to join us here.
Hey, I love Danny Segura.
He's one of my...
I don't know if he deserves hip-hop horns.
There he is!
He's here!
He's here!
He's here right here!
He's giving BC the finger.
I didn't even know he slipped in,
like in the middle of the night. Like a ninja.
You know the thing that we always say about Danny
is say what you will about
Danny's on
screen bravado. Off screen
the guy gets it done, right?
Like your brother-in-law Pepe?
Pipe.
Pipe is like short
for Felipe. Yeah, okay.
I'll call him Pugnani if I need to, Luke.
BC, let's talk about some of the other winners from this car that deserve to be.
Are you going to no-sell Segura's Mojo right now?
No, we're going to have him on here in studio.
I gave you a chance to just dunk that, you know, and you're like, yeah, we'll wait.
Yeah, we'll see you later.
Okay, it's 11.27, and we've got to move the show on.
Hey, I've been on vacation.
I've been itchy, okay?
All right, so then let's talk about this.
Other people from the card who were great.
How about in the women's flyweight division?
What a breath of fresh air.
BC, she dressed up like the Joker.
She's scary.
She's scary.
She had a sick knockout.
BC, you pronounce it Tong?
The broadcast, it looks like Wang Kong, it looks like, right?
It looks like it's Wang Kong, yes.
It's pronounced Tong.
She goes by the Joker.
She has a win over Valentina Shevchenko in kickboxing.
And she bulldozed her opponent here.
She got her coming out of a reset with a single shot.
It was unbelievable.
Dude, she's got personality.
She's got pop, obviously.
Total self-confidence.
I have been saying that the women's game needs somebody
to take it by the scruff of the neck,
and I feel like Tong is exactly what I've been looking for.
Dude, she has arrived on the scene as a finished product,
and I know she's like 32,
and she's certainly experienced in all of combat.
I mean, that Shevchenko kickboxing win came during a stretch
where Shevchenko just wasn't losing in that sport,
and that was back in 2015,
and so she's got that hook, right?
The same hook Poiton had when he arrived in the UFC,
knowing it may not take too many wins
if you can get him to make an Adesanya fight happen.
Well, Luke, what did Tong do?
Took on a fighter who, yes, had been stopped
every time she had stepped up
against higher level opponents.
You know, the Miranda Mavericks of the world,
that level in this division.
But, Luke, you don't see first round finishes this nasty and dominant and defiant in the way that Tong did.
And then Tong gets the microphone afterwards through the translator.
And what does she do?
Calls out the UFC for putting her in the curtain jerker fight to kick it off.
Luke basically says, I want a main event next or I want a main card fight next.
And then on top of that, when they bring up the champion's name is all about it is ready to go.
Of course she would be Luke.
She has,
I know she had to go through the Dana White contender series turn style.
Hope that didn't lead her to a 12 and 12 reality Luke,
but either way,
she does not look like she's going to need that many wins to get into a
title situation in this division.
And it may not even be obviously Shevchenko at the end of this video game,
depending on what happens in the sphere.
Obviously one 25 is populated quickly with fighters.
We want to see at the title level,
no one more deserving at the moment than Manon Farrow.
So we're still a few fights off, but how,
how often do you see somebody come in and look this ready to dominate and
have that feather in the cap of the Shevchenko history,
whether they meet for the title or not, Luke,
this is excitement into the women's game.
And you were saying off camera, you know, my beloved women's game.
I love it.
It's such a competitive when the divisions are filled and it's right.
135 sucked for a while.
145 was never a thing.
115 even going through some hardships.
But 125 continues to deliver.
And now we've got another player who, tell me if I'm wrong,
does she look title ready?
Not that she's going to get it next,
but she kind of looks like a finished, to go product put her in next against an
elite fighter let's do it hard to say without the her rest of her game being audited at this level
for the grappling component but the striking component she's championship ready like striking
component wise what would you want to see her against a chukagian type no dude you gotta do
the alex perera uh fast track fast track she's 32 what you don't have time okay so in that division A Chukagian type against a... No, dude, you got to do the Alex Pereira... Fast track.
Fast track.
She's 32.
You don't have time.
Okay, so in that division,
we acknowledge Farrow has next, right?
Mm-hmm.
Well, there's no scenario
where the Shevchenko rivalry with Grasso continues
unless there's another draw.
Is that correct?
Even with a draw, I don't know if it continues.
You know what I mean?
I think they might just move on after that.
Then you have Rose versus Aaron Blanchfield,
which will be a big fight in title contention yes but it's not even even with the
upkick in names that we care about at 125 it's not as if there's a long line of title ready people
at the moment she could fill that gap quickly did she also call out king casey o'neill she did i
believe that was that's a good call out in terms of the escalation process great call up fast track
it let's do it all right i'm all in favor by the way thereout in terms of the escalation process here. It's a great call-out. Fast-track it. Let's do it. All right. I'm all in favor.
By the way, there were two winners of the Ultimate Fighter.
They just buried the Ultimate Fighter on a nub.
It never felt so meaningless.
Utterly meaningless.
Even though I like the fights.
I was going to say Ryan Loader gets a win over Robert Valentin.
That was gutsy.
That guy has a McKenzie team vibe where he comes in strong ground game,
wrestling background. Division I All-American out of Northern Iowa.
He can wrestle.
Obviously, he can grapple a little bit as well. Myronos getting a a vicious ko we'll see some shit with him later
over a con hopefully that was ridiculous but the one i wanted to highlight was michael morales out
of ecuador he remains undefeated 17 and 0 defeating neil magny miss bisping on the broadcast was
saying he was giving up his back that was strategic on purpose it was not a mistake it was i mean i
think bisping had his worst night ever as an announcer.
I don't know about that.
I didn't listen to the whole card, but in that particular moment,
that was actually not correct.
This is what, for example, it's the same thing that against Islam Makhachev
that Volkanovsky did where you plant your forehead in the cage.
It's actually hard to take your back.
No one's really going to invert underneath.
And so it actually ends up being a situation where you can show your back, but it's actually hard to take your back. No one's really going to invert underneath. And so it actually ends up being a situation
where you can show your back,
but it's actually a safe position.
He did that, spins to the back,
crushes Magnet with it,
and then basically just follows up
and then demolishes him.
What a win for him, dude.
This was perfect matchmaking,
super exciting, major, major delivery.
The guy is a tank at 170. Unbeaten, unbeaten, has a judo background.
They were calling him like a bit of a striker, which he can be.
He is heavy-handed, but he's got a judo background.
I'm liking what I'm seeing out of Miles Morales.
But he has badass energy, too.
You know what I'm saying?
Do you remember when he had that really ballooned ear a year ago?
It was almost James Colossus Thompson-esque,
and now he's got really gnarly cauliflower air in his right ear, I believe.
I don't think I've ever seen it.
The Spider-Man thing?
I don't think I've ever seen it that gross,
but he's got the tat combo.
He's in sick shape.
He is a finisher that goes after it.
He carries himself in that swagger
that says he's arrived,
he's ready to do some business,
and to take care of somebody like Magnum
that quickly sends a huge message.
Then you go back and you're like,
oh shit, he's unbeaten to this run,
and he's absolutely blown through some people.
I want to see more. I love the Spider-Man bit. I bit i can't wait rising banger alert that's what i'm saying this card had those under under storyline storylines but like
second and third tier storylines that were really interesting and then last but not least for me
there was other good fights on this card as you mentioned slava claws got a nice win but uh how
about gerald mearshart and edmund shabazzian? Gerald Mearshart, taking a bit of a beating, gets dropped, I think, in the first round.
Was it the first or second round he got dropped?
I think it was the second.
Second round.
He gets dropped with a body shot.
And Shabazian, who it was in the first round.
I'm watching this fight.
I'm like, how did Shabazian, because I watched it after the fact.
How did Shabazian lose this?
Like, he's fighting at just the right pace.
He's the best first round fighter we have.
He's like Americana.
But more than that, he wasn't going bananas.
He was just fighting at the right pace, drops Mearshart in the second,
and then goes bananas trying to finish him, gases, and then loses.
I'm like, dude, that is such a devastating loss for him.
I mean, he's had a few of these now.
It is.
But this is like you're at this point now where I don't know if he has a cardio issue,
if he has an injury issue, a training issue,
but he's got a performance issue, and it's a problem.
Now, he said on Instagram afterwards that it was almost an apologetic post
saying, like, I gassed myself out going for the finish.
I thought I had the opening there.
But, Luke, here's the deal with him.
Against average or below average guys, he can look spectacular
because offensively he has flashier skills than his entire game can back up.
Would you agree with that?
There's times where he exits and lands sneaky hooks.
I mean, he has beautiful combinations.
He can hurt and really at times
spectacularly finish lower level guys.
It's when he fights guys with a backbone.
Think of veteran like Mearshowd who's tough,
who has this sort of reputation that he can hang in
and fights on this level.
If he doesn't get the person out of there in the first round.
And what I felt the biggest thing holding back was,
I don't know if Shabazzian for his flashies,
he can be offensively.
I don't know if he's actually a threat to finish good fighters or guys
that,
that are very recuperative or elite level,
tough guys.
And if he doesn't Luke,
it's becoming an inevitability that he will implode,
that he will find a way.
So when you say like,
what is the problem?
It's kind of hard.
You could,
you could blame it on cardio. I just think
I don't know if there's a lack of self-confidence
or there's something in there that if you can get him
into the second half of the second round
and suddenly his chances
of winning start to drop
dramatically. If he can't
fix that, if that's something deep and internal
that he can't identify and fix,
then he's gone his way out, Luke.
Because what is this? four losses in five fights?
Or is it even worse than that?
I'll pull up his record.
He had that death stretch of three in a row where it looked like he was really going to be on his way out.
He did right the ship.
He got a stoppage win in the fight before this.
Pop quiz, how old is Shabazzu?
26.
26.
So he lost three in a row to Brunson, Hermansen, and Imavov.
Okay, ranked guys.
Seriously.
He gets a rebound against Dalkaca lungi and bula who has the
biggest traps i've ever seen in my life then loses again to anthony hernandez fluffy hernandez
who's very good fight in between rebounds against aj dobson but then loses to gerald
meerschaul it's like every time they try and get him to escalate back up it flops because he can't
finish these guys early and i don't think he knows how to win fights outside of that luke you don't
see decision wins against good names on his record he's going to get the lower tier guys out of there,
or he's going to find a way to lose it.
And that's a harsh thing to say into a microphone,
but the track record backs it up.
It does back it up.
Aussie rules, Luke, what were you going to say?
I was going to say,
Edmund does not have a win over someone currently in the UFC
since Brad Tavares in 2019.
Jesus.
That was a nice win, too.
In 2019, when he finished, Brad Tavares was a first-round shot.
I was like, this guy is going to be—
He was still with Coach Edmund back then.
Yeah, 21 years old.
I was like, this guy is going to be an absolute dynamo.
Nope, didn't happen.
Wasn't he managed by Rousey for a bit?
I think that's true.
I don't know what the current state of it is.
No, I think that's true.
And he also left there.
Now he trains in Vegas.
Do you think she should post an apology to him as well 11 years later?
That didn't go well, did it?
Well, actually, you know what?
I thought her apology was actually pretty good.
Her apology was great, but Reddit brought it out of her.
Like that AMA she signed up for seemed sketchy at best, and they brought it.
I mean, they've tried to take down people before.
I don't know if you've, I mean.
The power is significant.
I can say that.
Anything else you want to shout out before we move on to topic two?
I mean, you had just seriously mere sharts ability to take a beat and keep on
ticking and, and you know,
what ties Anderson Silva for the most finishes in middleweight history.
It's one of those kind of rare stats, but we need fighters like this.
We need fights like this.
He's got really clean, very MMA friendly jujitsu.
Absolutely. He's got a good attitude very MMA-friendly jiu-jitsu. Absolutely.
He's got a good attitude.
They even asked him what was his take about being there for that PFL fight
between Allen and Vittori, and he totally was like,
oh, those guys weren't there.
I didn't see anything.
He totally got their back like that.
No, he's a cool dude, but you look at that run of being able to submit guys,
now the question becomes can he do this on a higher level?
He hasn't proven that.
He's a guy that will juggle three wins and three losses and be like that.
But this really was a nice sort of chance to give him his flowers
for the toughness to stay through it.
And then his ground game is absolutely elite.
Very good.
So it was fun to see.
Just another storyline in this division that this card helped propensate.
Luke Middleweight, so much fun this year.
I wish you would just admit it.
I mean, be like Joe Pfeiffer's in here.
I mean, there's a lot of fighters that are coming on.
I think this, the UFC is certainly working on breaking ground
for additional infrastructure for the Apex.
They want to be able to do what that, I guess it was an NXT show that was there.
Sure.
I think if they do that, and first of all, that would be a huge difference maker.
And then I don't think every card that is at the A apex can be quite as nimble and fun as this one.
But to your point, when they are, they're pretty great.
I don't think we're going to talk about this in a year.
And when I say this, I mean, our hatred for the apex, because obviously the arena is going to grow.
Like you're saying, it's going to change the atmosphere.
They're going to be.
No, I'm talking to you.
They're going to be on the road more.
But I think our problems with matchmaking, I think as long as they don't put out main events
that are just obvious flat tires,
they're going to be fine because the crowd noise at these places.
And if we can go, what's the Apex population?
What is it, 1,000 that can fill in there?
Maybe a little bit more with NXT configuration.
Right, and sometimes as it's set up right now,
you're getting a lot of people that are buying
a couple thousand dollar purchases to sit there
and maybe they're not huge fight fans.
We get back in front of 3 000 aggressive huge fight fans there it's
going to be we're not going to talk about this in a year the fight nights will be fine um real
quickly there was a suggestion during the broadcast of contender series that they might take or mick
maynard wanted to take contender series on the road and i was thinking to myself that's exactly
what i don't want like that well okay two reasons one that's just regional mma like i don't need ufc to do regional mma and more to the point i would mind i don't mind it if the contender series is
at the apex it's the ufc shows that i want to see on the road yeah i actually feel like the
contender series works really well at the apex it really does yes so that for those two reasons i'm
like no just stay there and make it nicer doesn't remind you of the old tough arena it does so all
you need to pull out the palm.
All you need to know the other one.
Yeah, the other one.
But all you need to make that even better is to just triple the crowd size, which it
seems that they're going to do it.
So good move by the UFC.
And guess what?
While they're fixing that, they're going to be on the road.
So it'll be even better.
You see, may I call an audible?
May I pitch to you the questions today?
Because I feel like I want to get some fresh takes from you and you're piping hot.
This is like like when you walk 15 miles like I did a couple days ago in paris and you get back to the hotel room you're
like i gotta get fresh straws on because that was just you know that was just a ball sack next to
the thigh all right swamp ass topic number two so last week in washington dc the pfl held a press
conference it was hosted nominally by jake paul but in the end it was to promote francis and ganu
taking on henna fajita this will be i think, October 19th in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
It'll be on pay-per-view.
We don't have a price point yet, I don't think, for that.
There was some, you see, I'm sure, I don't know if you saw it, there was a little bit
of a contentious moment where it sounded like Hena Fajeda was using both the loss to Anthony
Joshua as well as the death of his son to promote the fight. He later went out of his way to clarify,
yes, I was talking about the Joshua fight,
but in no way was I talking about it.
And he apologized to Francis.
He reached out to media members.
And Francis, by the way, accepted it.
It's no big deal in the end.
It's what you do about nothing in the end.
That's right.
And by the way, I will say this.
Obviously, the Joshua loss is completely fair game.
You can bring that up to the end of the world.
Okay, so putting that aside though,
you saw him face off,
you saw the presser and some of the stuff that came out of it.
Let me ask this.
Give me your temperature as it stands today,
August 26th on this fight.
As a fight fan,
from an entertainment standpoint,
everything that has happened has become sort of de facto best case scenario
and getting me super hyped for this.
And what I mean by that is it's not the best case scenario for PFL.
In my opinion,
Francis not fighting after they make the big announcement was that two years
ago,
it feels like now and him not fighting in MMA and going not only to boxing
multiple times,
but getting devastatingly knocked out,
which suddenly puts questions onto where is Francis actually at?
Will he recover from that?
God,
it'll be 33 months that he'll be removed from active MMA time
when he steps back into that cage.
So I don't think it's a best-case scenario for PFL at all,
particularly, Luke, because Francis not fighting
played a lot into why this has been a disastrous year for PFL.
From a PR standpoint, it's just been like, who cares?
Is it even on? I don't even know.
I mean, it's been a rough year.
But from the potential, does this fight excite me entertainment-wise now
because of what happened?
It doubles or triples it.
Originally, it was always going to be sort of,
okay, Fajita doesn't have the same ability or experience as Francis,
but he's 6'8", let's see what can happen.
Now I think you legitimately have questions about Ngannou.
Not just the Joshua loss, the long layoff, the age now,
although heavyweights do age later, there's a lot of questions about exactly where he's at.
And I think Fajita did the right thing by not taking interim fights after beating Bader in that
cross-paper view to kick off the year that could have exposed him anymore. Yeah, he's got a couple
losses early on, but when you look at the recent run ever since he was stopped there by uh ante delicia was
it until delia yeah um chris delia oh god you know wow wow yeah um i'll say this luke he has
looked good and he has looked like a monster wow is this an r kelly joke in there somewhere uh
luke here's what i'm saying though fajita played the part of treacherous villain, in my opinion, perfectly.
So take out the comment, he didn't mean it.
We're not even including that in there.
Came in there with the sunglasses, came in there and showed you the size difference.
I think I have a good picture.
And have you seen the shit of that size difference, Luke?
And it's like, oh, shit.
I think suddenly from a matchup, it's a great fight now that really matters for their side of the street.
Obviously, the PFL heavyweight championship is somehow on the line here.
We haven't really figured out how Fahad is not in a tournament, but he is the champion.
Now we're going to fight for it.
But if you're PFL, you've got to get past, in my opinion, this regular season tournament BS.
Combine the rosters and do it.
This hopefully is their first step in doing that.
I don't assume that their cage will be smart enough to tell them that. But I really
care about who's going to win this. I mean, we can make
the argument about what's better for the PFL
based on which guy wins, but
I think there's a potential here for this to be a two-fight series
and I think it's going to answer a lot.
Will we know for sure whether
Francis is still on the level of Jon Jones
or Aspinall in this great debate of who's still
the lineal MMA heavyweight championship?
Can we get the Yama belt out?
What was the name of those belts that they tried to bridge the gap and have?
Wama.
Wama, not Yama.
World Association of Mixed Martial Arts.
Yeah, it didn't stay around for a while.
Which they held up upside down.
But, Luke, would you agree the questions surrounding Ngannou make this fight suddenly so freaking interesting?
And, obviously, if Fajita does the shit, if he goes out there and knocks out Francis,
will we be mentioning the Joshua
fight? Of course, but I don't think that will be the
lingering cloud over it. I think you
may have built a star if that happens, Luke. You know what I mean?
You're not going to get a crossover fight with Jones or
Aspinall or Stipe. Francis is the
only one that could potentially keep that hope
alive of some MMA fan dream
of bringing everyone together. But
I think suddenly the matchup is interesting
where if it would happen right after Francis signed,
we would have thought that Fajita was second tier.
No different than if they scrounged up some ex-UFC heavyweight
that was still around like a JDS and tried to make that happen.
Well, we didn't get JDS.
We didn't get Derek Lewis.
He re-signed.
I actually like it that we've got a young guy
who we actually don't know how good he can be.
And if you show his recent highlights,
you can be nothing but impressed.
Six foot eight, athletic, can backflip. I know. What does that mean for MMA? But it shows you
that there's a plus level ability and he came in confident. I thought he had the right answer
showing Francis a certain level of respect mixed with trying to put out there. I'm coming for it.
I'm a menace. You guys are going to find out. I thought all in all, when they finally did the
face off there with Jake Paul in the middle that you go, well, shit, there's going to be a fight.
It's not going to last long and it's going to be exciting.
Win for PFL during a stretch where I feel like, unfortunately,
they have failed constantly, and they have slowly made us care even less.
They've got a lot of things to still figure out.
One of them, in my opinion, is this Bellator boondoggle that means nothing,
and all these fighters are just fighting each other.
But this main event and this co-main event, Pacheco,
shout out to her in the press conference saying this is the biggest fight in women's mma history this is the most intriguing
one whether it is or not that's how you got to sell it they have one night that we're going to
really care some things are going to have to happen for it to continue but at least they have
it this year luke if they didn't have this what is pfl in 2024 i don't know i will say this um
well i don't know about the i don't know about the women's side of the thing.
I don't know how it's going to perform on pay-per-view,
which is a relevant concern.
Maybe the first time they actually sell anything, right?
It won't sell much because just like Gary Shaw was always right.
He's like, you can't just sell with Kimbo Slice.
You have to have Kimbo Slice and somebody else.
So no one really knows who Henifah Head is.
But I'll tell you this much.
I don't think the U of the,
there's some good folks who work at the PFL.
I don't think they're great at promoting big attractions.
But what I will say is I actually love this fight.
And I don't care so much about like,
oh, is the lineal UFC heavyweight champion
versus the PFL champion?
It's a relevant-ish kind of storyline,
but it's not the one I care about.
20 months ago, it's a relevant storyline. Yeah, exactly. it's not the one i care about 20 months ago it's a relevant yeah exactly now now who gives a damn but right now i love this
fight because to your point again i don't want to use it as fight material but i will say that
obviously a profound family tragedy is going to have some kind of effect on your life now it could
boost him it could drain him it could dramatically go in either direction.
That's exactly right.
And, of course, go back and watch the loss to Anthony Joshua.
It was vicious, a vicious, vicious stoppage.
Getting over both of those things is ridiculous.
Plus, as you mentioned, you can age gracefully at heavyweight,
but he is a little bit older now, Francis Ngannou,
and Henne Fahada is limited.
He is limited.
But in terms of getting Ngannou at a point in time with the specific
skill set that he has, he's fast, he is hugely powerful,
he's much bigger than Ngannou.
I'm intrigued.
I'm super intrigued.
I'm intrigued, actually.
I kind of like this fight.
Dude, I don't think people are going to shit on it to the level you think
if he knocks Francis out.
And when I say shit on it, I mean go the, oh, well,
AJ already took his fighting soul.
This was just cleanup.
No, I think it's a big win for the PFL and Fajita if he wins.
Let me pitch that back to you.
Because people ask me, like, oh, what's better for PFL
if Francis or Hennon wins?
And they can spin it either way
because they have both guys under contract.
It's not like it's not matchroom versus, you know,
top rank or something.
But I think the answer is Francis.
And here's why.
If Hennon Fajita wins, you can claim, hey, our guy ultimately beat Francis,
the lineal UFC guy.
You get a second fight if Henne wins, in my opinion, too.
You probably get a second one, but the problem is after that, where do you go?
You haven't pulled anybody over.
You can't really maximize it.
By contrast, if Francis goes out there and just fucking dummies this guy,
which is, oh, by the way, very possible, because Hena Fajeda is reckless.
If he does, holy shit, you can be like, he's back.
He's the star of our show.
He went into MMA.
He beat Tyson Fury.
He just finished, because I'm assuming if he beats Fajeda,
it's going to be by finish.
He just finished Hena Fajeda.
The predator is back.
You can sell that either way,
but I think the answer's got to be Ngannou.
I got to ask you a question here.
Let's say Ngannou blows him away. Let's say he
looks like the Francis of 33 months ago in
an MMA cage, although 33 months ago he was on
one leg wrestling gone, and I give him a lot of credit
for that win, but that wasn't even the Francis that we
know. Let's say he looks like the Francis from the Stipe
rematch, Luke. That was the
one that got Dana to say John should go down to
185, if we recall, right? That was a big
moment.
Is there an organized play
from Francis and PFL
brass? You'd have to be aggressive.
It's no different from what we're going to talk about with
Aspinall and John Jones, right? Aspinall coming out
and being so aggressive and saying, hey, I heard
the steep is hurt in this fucking hit. Like he's
I think he's making moves here. We can talk about that.
Is there a move if that happens that in Ghana
can pick up the mic and go, Jon Jones, I'm back.
I'm the real heavyweight champion.
I'm the lineal.
I never lost it in the cage.
Whatever happens between you and Stipe or you and Aspinall, whatever,
let's do this fight.
Is there pressure publicly that Don Davis, PFL, and Ngannou could put on Disney
knowing that they own both, they have the rights, contracts to promote both PFL
and UFC under their banner?
Is there a public angle there that can actually put a certain level of pressure both on ESPN to create the idea of a of a thing we never see a cross promotion and going the Disney route?
Is there anything there?
Because Disney has a certain amount of what is Disney control?
The price point on the UFC pay-per-views, right?
And we found out with the California situation during COVID
that they can put their foot down in some...
There is a line, right?
There's a line.
It's pretty minimal, but yes.
It's not a complete free-for-all.
I mean, is that played on sports?
Is that soundbite played on SportsCenter the next day?
Can you do this angle?
So, no.
But there's two things to consider.
One, I don't think those pressures mean jack shit.
However, what I will say is if the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia decides that this is something that they really want, but there's two things to consider one i don't think those pressures mean jack shit however what
i will say is if the kingdom of saudi arabia decides that this is something that they really
want that's a different thing because they got the purse strings and they are but remember we're
going to talk about it here with danny segura about september 14th it's ufc no j reod season
right so that's that's in play the thing you have to really i don't know if you how much you read
about this during the your time away it wasn't that long, but I don't know if the UFC has a future on ESPN.
I'm very –
Yeah, they want to be –
They want Netflix.
They're in the same bracket with WWE with TKO right now.
Yes.
And it's a lot of the same smart minds being put together.
I think they are trying to get as many big-name homes as they can.
I think that's right.
And so the question is, yeah, you're both under.
Dude, they've been both on ESPN.
They haven't had any meaningful crossover whatsoever.
Yeah, but you haven't had a want or a need to at all if you're a UFC up to this point.
Outside of Kayla, but they got her anyway.
Okay, but you think Francis beating Fajita is now a want and need?
No, I'm saying if there was a best-case scenario where he just looks so great again.
I think if he looks great and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia really wants it,
I think that's a slightly different conversation.
Even then, I think they're walking the trail.
But Aspinall, it's true or false, Aspinall's growth and the quick ascension of him
going from potential future champion to, oh my God, I think he might beat Jones.
Does that kind of make any need for this conversation, push it away from a UFC standpoint?
Sort of, but that's our next topic.
So let's get into it.
Topic number three.
Again, this is something that happened when BC was away.
Tom Aspinall is going as close as I've ever seen him to scorched earth to, I don't know,
get a fight with Jon Jones or promote himself or make Jon Jones look bad.
So BC, let me ask the question this way.
He said, I'm going to retire him without ever.
What was the exact quote?
Without ever fighting him?
What was the exact quote he had about Jon Jones?
I'll get the exact, but it was something like, I'll retire him without even having to fight him.
Yeah.
I mean, ice cold.
Like, wouldn't he show me the respect as he walks out of MSG with at least putting the title?
And he said, he's calling Steve Bamiyotchi Joe Biden.
All kinds of stuff.
Sleepy Joe?
I know.
Joe Biden taking strays here all of a sudden.
But the reality is it's a new posture.
That much we can be certain.
It's a new posture.
So, BC, my question to you is to what extent will this actually work in changing his material fortune?
I think it'll work more than you think because this is why it's really smart.
I think it answers all of the above.
You put out a couple scenarios.
Well, would it do this? Would it really smart. I think it answers all of the above. You put out a couple of scenarios. Well, what to do this, what to do that.
I think it raises his profile.
I think it shows him to the UFC that he's super serious about getting this fight and
he's willing to campaign for it.
Something that guys don't do enough of my opinion publicly when they want to fight that
might not be in the best plans short term for the UFC or maybe not be part of their
interest in the moment.
And I think what he has succeeded on Luke, and you can tell me if I'm wrong on this,
is A, putting a lot of pressure on Jon Jones by doing this,
but B, making Dana White have to talk about it.
The last few press conferences,
I have seen the clips floating around social media
of Dana being asked, and you know what he's had to do?
We've heard Dana do nothing but puff up Jon Jones lately, right?
Almost to hysterical levels, right?
To the idea that-
The kids call it glazing.
Right, and you can just argue
it's to make Jones versus Stipe still matter
by arguing that he's the GOAT,
which I don't think we're arguing against,
but obviously the whole pound for pound debate
and the whole who's leaving the room thing on that.
Luke, I think this is making Dana do,
have you heard his recent responses?
Every time he's been asked lately,
whether it's 305,
whether it's the Dana White Contender Series presser,
he says, guys, I don't believe John Jones is here to duck Tom Aspinall I'm telling you I
know this guy and Luke the things that he says are true John Jones has always been about it about it
for the most part until when all kind of until in Ghanou's rise when Jones sat out three years
and was trying to sort of find ways to get more leverage contract wise remember he brought in
Richard Schaefer and all that Luke I kind of agree overall on a few things.
Like I think Dana is telling the truth from that regard.
He believes John's going to take it no matter what,
but even if he doesn't believe it,
this puts more pressure on John.
I think at the end of the day,
whether this fight actually happens has always come down to UFC's ability
to overpay for it.
Because if you're John, you should make them overpay for it.
You can argue that as much as we've been bashing John on the show on the same level, we're
kind of been bashing Canelo for being like, no, I don't want Benavidez or Crawford.
I don't want any of those fights you guys want.
Or Morel.
Right.
We've been saying that.
But yet, if you're John, if your whole goal is to get paid for it, and if reality deep
inside, and what does John's track record in reality?
When he does show up, boy, does he show up against anyone in line?
Let's do it.
Maybe this is the way for him to get paid.
So whether UFC is willing to actually give into that and give John Jones for the first time, quote unquote, Deontay Wilder money, as he said back in 2019, 2020.
Or whether it Turkey Al-Sheikh is the intervener in the way that we probably wouldn't have gotten B-Vol better, B-Fury versus Usyk and a couple other fights if it wasn't for Turkey Al-Ashiq's presence.
That's why love him or hate him and the impact that Saudi Arabia is having on boxing, at
the very least, we've gotten those significant fights that this era would be incomplete without.
This fight in MMA is so rare because we rarely ever have UFC in a position of not giving
us something.
So when Dana takes the offensive, which he did in the last press conference, says, folks,
when was the last time we didn't give you what you wanted? Tell us,
right? It was Ngannou Jones, but Ngannou left. And we can always argue why he left. And I think Ngannou's answer at the PFL press conference was perfect in that regard. But Luke, they do tend to
get it done. It's going to come down to money at the end of the day. It's going to, whether it's
Turkey or not, it's going to come down to money. If UFC is willing to overpay for it, they're going
to get this fight. But I think it's perfect by Aspinall to put that public pressure on John,
not just from a social media standpoint and a fan standpoint,
but internally because look,
if Dana has to keep going to bat to the microphone,
defending John's track record of accepting big fights,
there's going to be some internal pressure on John afterwards.
You could argue, Hey, that doesn't matter.
If John has plans to get out, didn't matter for GSP, right?
He did promise Dana. He'd fight Luke Rockhold.
Was that the next fight for him?
After winning the middleweight title, and he instead retired on that regard.
Wasn't it Whitaker he was supposed to fight?
Was it Whitaker or Rockhold?
Whitaker was the interim champ.
Oh, yes, that's right.
Then it was Whitaker.
Okay, good call, Long Island Luke.
Did you get that quote, by the way?
Yeah, I had it almost exactly right.
It was, I will retire Jon Jones without even fighting him.
Yeah, that's cold as...
Dude, the only thing I would say
is I don't know if Espinel's taking it further enough.
I would just go the Scorched Earth level of Jon.
Okay, but I feel like...
Hold on.
Let me push back
because I do feel like this is great.
Great.
I think it is unlikely to change his material fortunes,
but if anything will, it is this approach.
I don't know if everyone's... However, you if anything will, it is this approach. However,
you go further, and it starts looking like
Shannon Briggs chasing down Klitschko
when he's paddleboarding,
and now you look desperate.
Let's go, champ.
But did people see the video where it seemed like
Aspinall started the Stipe is hurt
rumor? Which I think, whether he's lying or it seems
like he's lying, right? It seemed like he was lying through his teeth.
People came back and reported that it wasn't true.
That's brilliant because now we're starting to say,
wait, what's John going to do if that does happen, right?
This is perfect.
I do think there is more he can go,
and I think it's questioning John's manhood more directly.
Yes.
And I think if he stays down that road,
it's his best chance of getting it done.
But it comes down to UFC, true or false,
it comes down to UFC being willing to pay to pay that extra extra sum you were right and if they do pay it and if
turkey's involved or not put it in a freaking stadium because that would be the fight that
would demand you're so right it was whittaker because remember gsp chokes out michael bisping
and then retires like a week later or re-retires or whatever it was a week later and we all we
talked about at the time i think it was 2017 if memory serves where what they were discussing was the best way for someone to get a profile in the sport through the
championship is you have to beat the champ yes and you get this transfer of legitimacy but without it
you can't get it so will will these actions by tom aspinall actually get him a john jones fight i
still remain skeptical however however to the extent that he can undermine
any legitimacy of that fight such that it still has any,
I know that technically the UFC title is on the line for it,
but to the extent that he can undermine that
and so that people both before and then after especially go,
what was the point of that?
Tom Aspinall's the guy.
He can raise his profile by being like,
I'm already the future.
This is just a vestigial organ.
We have to cut out and remove.
He gets some of that transfer of legitimacy without actually ever having
the fight.
I don't think he can get the transfer of legitimacy without getting the
fight.
I don't think a portion.
I don't think that portion is going to be worth it.
So if,
if I'm right and I might be wrong, but if I'm
right, that you're only going to get that if you go through
John, because how many people will care if John and Stipe
walk away? Francis isn't here.
How many people will actually care if Aspinall starts
putting together two, three title defenses? I'm not sure
they will at that level. So Luke, if you do
have one chance under my scenario,
what should be Aspinall's posture
in MSG? Obviously, he's going
to be front row. I mean, I don't know if he should put up a sign that says, I'm the real champ.
But if he has one window to walk in the cage if they let him afterwards, or even if they don't,
I personally think that's when you go to break glass in case of emergency.
That's when you go and put hands on John.
That's when you throw something at him.
You have to do something, in my opinion.
BFL casino style?
You have to do something, in my opinion, to challenge John's manhood so aggressively
that the internet would basically be like, look at this footage.
Tom just went up and got in his face and pushed him or punched him or did something.
Threw something on him.
Did something, Luke.
Poured a drink on him.
Something where you're like, ah, shit, I can't walk away from that.
You know what I mean?
Like the egg on your face.
Like the idea of people saying.
I don't think he's got that in him, but I don't disagree with the strategy.
I think you get the fight if you do that.
You think so?
I do.
And it can't be WWE style like when Brock Lesnar pushed DC and you're like.
I'll say this.
I'll say this.
Hostility and antipathy both towards John and Stipe and their fight is working.
It is working for Tom Aspinall.
People like seeing him show this new wrinkle.
They like him kind of showing. Dude, do you see the video where he's like looking for
John Jones?
Oh yeah.
He's underscoring the absurdity of this fight that is working for him.
So again, ultimately what end does it get to?
We shall see, but just laying back and being like, John, it'd be, it'd be an honor to fight
you.
Get the fuck out of here with that.
It's the same thing I say about David Benavidez. I know he has ultimately made the decision to go to light heavyweight and just say, look, Canelo, I'm not going to, I be an honor to fight you. Get the fuck out of here with that. It's the same thing I say about David Benavidez.
I know he has ultimately made the decision to go to light heavyweight
and just say, look, Canelo, I'm not going to chase you down.
That's a little more complicated.
That's a little more complicated.
But there was a certain point where I wanted him to be like, hey, Canelo,
I thought you were a Mexican.
I thought you were a man.
You know what I mean?
At some point, you've got to go there, Luke.
I can't go there because I can't back it up.
Did you see De La Hoya?
You know that?
I can't back it up.
Did you see De La Hoya in the thong?
I wouldn't see me either. G you see De La Hoya? Do you know that? I can't back it up. Did you see De La Hoya in the thong? I wouldn't see me either.
Gyrating and cavorting?
Yeah, I mean, you know, what do you expect at this point?
Did you see it, Danny?
What are we expecting from Oscar?
I mean, look, seriously, what do you want from Oscar right now?
What do you think is going to happen?
Dude, don't.
What the fuck are you doing posting that?
He got fake abs.
He's that guy.
No, he talked about it.
He said he doesn't have fake abs.
Did you hear the explanation?
No.
He said he got, I forget, there's a certain kind of name for the procedure.
I forget it.
It's something with the word sculpting in it where they don't put new abs in, but they
cut fat around it so that it accentuates it.
You can't not, you have to work out, which he does work out.
I'll give him that, but I don't want to see that.
I don't want to see his.
I was like, Oscar, I needed bleach in my eyes afterwards.
Okay, I will say his clapback Thursdays.
I laugh out loud. I laugh out loud at them. So I don't, Danny and I were actually talking about this. He was like, Oscar, I needed bleach in my eyes afterwards. Okay, I will say his clapback Thursdays, I laugh out loud.
I laugh out loud at them.
So I don't, Danny and I were actually talking about this.
He was like, Canelo, fuck you.
No, no, no, Danny and I were talking about this because on one of his clapback Thursdays,
he went after Edgar Berlanga for being a fake Puerto Rican.
And I don't like that shit.
I mean, it's not my fight.
I can't fight it.
But like, I don't like that shit.
And the second thing I would say is, dude,
that's what they went after Oscar for.
They went after Oscar for being a fake Mexican because he was both Mexican by
heritage and then American by nationality.
And so he was both in neither.
It's like if anybody who understands that that's like a loaded unfair charge,
it's fucking Oscar De La Hoya.
Once again, you're asking Oscar to play it fair. When
he offered Conor McGregor a
Canelo fight, and then a day later when the Floyd
fight got made, he wrote a letter to the
boxing media saying that we need to boycott that
Floyd-Conor fight. So he'll change
his tune every other day. Also, the last
thing I'd say is Clapback Thursdays is like...
It's a roast. It's hilarious.
Well, okay, but you only do it if
you're really, really sensitive.
Only people who are, it looks like a show of strength.
It's actually a show of weakness.
Right.
I mean, that's Oscar's run as a promoter.
He's had big moments and big fights,
but he's always undermining Canelo or Ryan Garcia because the ego is so
strong.
Okay.
Do you think Tom Aspinall is there in attendance in November for Jones-Depay?
He would be an absolute idiot if he wasn't there in the front row.
It's a guarantee he's there.
But he'd be an absolute idiot if he isn't cooking up what I just said.
Something, a moment.
You got to create a moment.
Last question.
Do they pull him into the cage afterwards?
I don't think that they do.
I think they do because of the pressure.
No!
Listen, because of the pressure that he has put on Dana now,
where Dana is constantly fielding questions about it, where Dana has to stand by John and say, do because of the pressure listen because of the pressure that he has put on dana now where dana
is constantly fielding questions about it where dana has to stand by john and say no john they're
gonna say they're gonna say these guys dude they're gonna do they're gonna put the pressure
on john no no dana will do that dana look we know yes he will yeah dude he's been soft peddling this
whole shit the entire time because he doesn't want people to hate and not not buy this fight
this is a big fight fine fine i fine, fine. I agree with that.
But what I'm saying is
he's going to be like,
these two guys are legends.
We don't want to ruin their moment.
He's going to use it as a way
to put up a barrier to the whole thing.
Well, now, Luke,
is he going to bring Jon Jones
in the cage afterwards or not?
No, I don't see it happening.
Yeah.
Well, Jon Jones will already be in the cage.
I'm sorry, sorry.
If Jon Jones even hints at retirement
during the post-fight interview if he beats Stipe, that's when Tom has to, you have to jump the cage. I'm sorry. Sorry. John Jones even hints at retirement during the post-fight
interview. If he beats Stipe, that's when Tom has to, you have to jump the fence. I'm sorry. You
have to pick off your shoe and throw it at him. You've got to do something. I agree with that.
I like that. I think the constant pressure he's been putting on is going to make it where they
let him in there. Ooh, they let him in there. We should do it. We should do a bet. UFC brass is
going to put the pressure on John. Do you, did you see that video recently where Dana was like,
he was talking about,
he was like,
look,
I don't really,
I don't dislike Francis.
Everybody thinks I dislike Francis.
He was pointing down the hall.
I think he was pointing at Hunter and he mentioned the matchmakers.
He's like,
those guys dislike Francis.
Cause those guys were their ass off to try to make Francis versus John
happen.
And I know it's a big,
you know,
Dana,
he said in Francis says the truth on the other end,
but they want to make
the big fights luke it would be they they would have no reason to they're only overly protecting
john and when they mean dana because they want to sell this msg fight a year later that's the
only reason luke that's the only reason let's talk we got one boxing topic and then we're going to
bring in danny cigar here to talk about september 14th let's talk about it so over Let's talk about it. Let's talk about September 11th, too.
Can't wait for September 11th.
Hi, everybody.
My name's Brian Campbell.
Can't wait for 9-11.
But that was a great fight, right? It was Fulton versus Figueroa.
Is that who it was?
Yeah.
And then you thought, oh, Fulton might have a chance against Inouye,
and then he got fucking the doors broken off of him.
All right.
Let's talk about the one sort of interesting piece of boxing news from the weekend.
It is actually quite relevant.
So Shakur Stevenson has signed with Matchroom.
He has signed with Eddie Hearn.
Now, it's a two-fight deal, and he's already got a fight.
I think it's October 12th inside of Ray Bay.
Joe Cordina, right?
Joe Cordina was stopped in his last fight,
but some thought it was due to the hard weight cut,
so he's moving up in weight for this.
Okay.
To 135.
So really, he's only got one fight beyond this with Eddie Hearn.
Of course, he could re-up, but he's doing the Canelo bit,
doing these really short deals.
So my question to you is this.
Okay.
Was this a wise decision by Shakur Stevenson?
And realistically, what would be a likely second fight?
The second fight would be William Zepeda.
It seems to almost be automatic,
mostly because Turk El-Ashik loves it.
And obviously it's a very easy fight to make.
Zepeda, one of the rare, you know,
big bright spots in the Golden Boy roster right now
with Ryan Garcia sidelined.
You've got Virgil Ortiz Jr.
and you've got William Zepeda,
who kind of somewhat out of nowhere
has become an absolute big thing in this division.
So Luke, I like what Shakur has done with this decision,
but I don't love it.
I like it because Cordinio's a good fight,
and it's probably a fight Shakur's going to win,
and even though Zepeda has got power,
he's got a great record, and he's on a great run,
that's also a fight Shakur would win,
and he'll probably get paid very well for both.
This first fight with Cordinio, I think it's the co-main
to Betterview versus B-Vol.
It's a big deal. But the reason why
I only like this is because
he was a free agent at a very pivotal time
in his career. Yes, he was coming off a fight
where he got booed out of the
building in his own hometown. And I know
he had a fight recently before that against De Los Santos
where he also kind of shit the bed
from the idea of what
people were expecting from him.
He shit the bed,
but the reality is he didn't do anything to hurt,
in my opinion,
what he really is,
which is a pure boxer,
right?
Defense first that can,
that can,
uh,
is hit and not get hit in a lot of ways.
I think the fight he should have gone after because the Loma fight fell
apart.
And Luke,
let's be honest.
Why did the Loma fight fell apart?
We don't actually know because Loma pulled out of the talks,
but I think if he were to resign with top rank, he'd be fighting Loma this fall, but he don't actually know because Loma pulled out of the talks, but I think if he would have re-signed with top rank,
he'd be fighting Loma this fall.
But he didn't,
and that's his right.
So what's the other big fight
that fills in the holes
of what he really needs right now?
Lucas Gervonta, Tank Davis.
And I don't pretend
to be on the insides
of whatever talks were had
or whether, you know,
Shakur needed to sign
a long-term deal with PBC
to get that fight.
I'm not privy to all that.
No one is, right?
But we do know that Gervonta Tank Davis
doesn't seem to want to be aligned with Turkey right now,
so that kind of hurts that possibility.
But if he was able to sign a one- or two-fight deal with PBC
that led to that fight,
I think Tank is the fight that he needs most right now.
It would allow him his biggest critical possible
win he can get right now.
But it seems unlikely.
I mean, they're not going to do that with Matchroom.
No.
It's this, it's Cordina, and then Zepeda.
That's why I like this choice.
He's going to get paid very well.
He should beat Cordina, and the Zepeda fight will feel big,
but I think he'll win that one, and I think he'll win it handily
because I think he has that style.
But what he needs right now more than anything,
talking about Shakur, is to win a fight that people question that he can
because he has been so done.
It's not that he has bad wins under his belt.
I mean, he's a three-division champion.car valdez being some like you know the what he did
to jamel herring to win the title he retired him at that moment dude he's done some things he's also
made a couple you know missteps or sidesteps or what have you he's very sensitive on twitter
what's the best way to fix all that i think to go out there and get a win in a primetime situation
and in this case with tank's power i think a lot of people would question if he can win it,
if he could stand in there and not only take the shots,
but if he has enough offense of his own
to give Tank some pause.
I think it would come down more to the boxing, obviously,
because that's what he does well as a long southpaw.
But I think that would give him the opportunity
for what he needs most,
which is that ultimate critical stamp
of he deserves to be here in the top 10 pound for pound,
and he is arguably the best boxer in this world.
He can get that to a certain degree with Zepeda,
and he can certainly make money on that side.
And if it's more about the business choices and the angling,
and again, I don't know what actually happened in the talks
between him and PBC, if the offer was ever on the table,
if it was ever good enough for him.
But even if you have to take less, that would have been the fight.
Because even if you lose that, but lose that in a competitive super fight,
which him against Tank would kind of be at this moment.
I mean, not a super fight, but it'd be a monster fight.
And they both kind of need it in a certain way.
I don't think you lose even if you lose.
Do you know what I mean?
Like there are ways that, but I am not privy to all that.
I like this move.
I don't love it because he should be both of these guys.
I'll say a couple things.
One, it is amazing how quickly Hearn has moved on from Haney to Stevenson.
Quick like. Quickly. Like greased lightning lightning that's the first thing i'd say second thing i'd say is hearn is promoting stevenson i think in a very interesting and
ultimately good way but i have one major problem with it it's something you brought up he is calling
him maybe unbeatable that's the exact quote he called him he's basically or maybe unbeatable and i'm
like that is a great way to sell how good he is but that won't resonate unless you're putting him
in contest he does it until he does like if you're being like i'm not saying williams is not a good
fighter he is a good fighter but you're right stevenson should probably win that no problem
i think he's going to be cordiana definitely no problem's like, you can't call a guy unbeatable after beating those guys, not because they're not good wins, but because to
the public's imagination, that is not convincing. What is convincing would be someone like Tank
Davis, who will lose rounds to Steve dude. Tank Davis loses rounds to Mario Barrios. He's going
to lose rounds to Shakur Stevenson. But the question is if he lands that big bomb, what
happens then? And I'm not saying it has to be Tank Davis.
It can be potentially some other ones as well.
But the problem that Stevenson's going to be up against is,
I think two fights with Hearn will be good for him.
He'll get some big paydays.
He's going to get a Saudi payday,
which I'm sure he wants.
That's great.
And look, if his endgame was to become a favored son of Turkey
and get positioned, well,
you can't really argue against that financially.
But it's what are you in here for? But the part is part of what stevenson needs i think is
not does he need credibility with boxing hardcores he needs some image rehabilitation so i understand
in calling him unbeatable but that is just so empty when people are in his own hometown walking
out not even in the 12th round, in the 11th round,
in a fight he's widely beating
by standing right in front of a guy
who can't really hit him.
It's like, yeah, he's literally unbeatable.
That's literally boring.
You know what I mean?
He was literally unbeatable in that particular fight,
and literally nobody cared.
So there's a certain way of promoting him
that I think can only be accompanied
by appropriate matchmaking.
Otherwise the whole thing just doesn't really work.
And he's been flaunting meaning Shakur.
We already know he's got, he's always had great mentors behind him.
He's always been like the little brother of Terrence Crawford.
He's tight with all the smokes, Andre Ward.
I think it was his manager of co-manager for a while.
And they've always been tight.
He's also developing that relationship with Floyd Mayweather,
which I think actually can help him on how to present yourself when you are a defensive base boxer first but to
put yourself out there in ways that sometimes rubs people the wrong way floyd thrived as a
villain in that regard i think that's good but i i just think the fight right now is tank i mean
imagine if he imagine if he went in there and outboxed tank and got the win what that would
do commercially and critically for him at the same time i don't think you can get that same thing on this run through Cordina and Zepeda.
The thing about Floyd, too, I just want to bring up,
because people always bring up Floyd.
Well, Floyd did this. Floyd did that.
And I'm like, when Floyd, this is not all the way true,
but definitely by the time he was money Mayweather, BC,
tell me if I'm wrong. Tell me if I'm missing something.
By all means, please correct.
But like part of what he was doing,
even if you want to say he was cherry picking
or he fought these guys at these particular times,
he was so gifted at beating everyone's favorite fighter yes he's going to beat Canelo he's going to beat Mosley he's going to beat you know you go down the let Berto not so
much and then Virgil Ortiz or I'm sorry never George's Victor Ortiz not so much but there was
a series of fights he had where they were like I want to see a Pacquiao in particular I want to
see him get knocked the fuck out I like Pac Pacquiao. I don't like Floyd.
Floyd used that.
But Shakur's not doing that.
No, he has.
He's turned heel after that fight.
Which fan favorites did he beat?
He hasn't gotten those opportunities yet.
I get you.
But I think, I mean, he's not there yet, Luke.
He's not at that point yet where he's getting the fights he wants
consistently.
Okay, but if you're signing with Eddie,
then you're electing a certain level of, I can't get these fights.
I mean, look, the pay to fight is a big fight.
Yeah, that's fine.
I just think he's ready now.
He's at the point now where how did Mayweather ultimately go
from being pretty boy to Money May and calling those shots?
By going in there against the likes of Corrales, Castillo twice,
and proving it. I think Shakur would go in there against the likes of Corrales Castillo and proving it.
I think Shakur would go in there and beat 98% of the potential big name
fighters.
You put in front of maybe a hundred.
I mean,
you know what I mean?
Maybe there's a pay to fight leads to Haney at a higher weight.
Who knows?
I mean,
Haney seems to be escalating quickly going up to one 47 where Ryan Garcia
seems to be going.
I just think that,
I mean,
should he have moved up to Walter weight and called out burials?
I don't know,
Luke.
I don't,
I don't think he needs to move that quickly. at 35 stevenson but i just that tank fight was perfect
i think it was the perfect time still is yeah and i don't think you needed turkey as long as he was
willing to take a certain amount you know financially in regard but again i'm not on the
inside of these discussions so that's all i can say but all right well with that in mind we have
topic number five and to help us do that is, well, my friend and yours, BC.
Yes.
When I did the MMA Hour for a year, this was my top producer, my right-hand man.
He is a South Florida resident.
He might like meth.
I don't know.
No, he doesn't.
He lives a very clean living, this guy.
Does he?
He's Danny Segurja.
I call him that, but is that a bad pronunciation?
It is a bad pronunciation, yes.
I was trying to be more open to new cultures.
Let's bring him in here.
Do we have a chair for him, too?
Yeah, they got the chair.
This will be your headphones here.
What a stash.
My guy.
What's up, bro?
You know, if you're going to pull off a stash like that, you must have a big secret.
You know what they call him?
Señor Bigote.
There it is.
Señor Bigote.
Here we go.
These are for you, bud.
How do you say Sofredi in Colombian?
Sofredi.
Yeah, there you go. Danny, welcome, brother. Round of applause. Danny Seg you, bud. How do you say Sofredi in Colombian? Sofredi. Yeah, there you go.
Danny, welcome, brother.
Round of applause.
Danny Segura, everybody.
How we doing?
How we doing?
Here we are.
How you doing, Danny?
Good, man.
Good.
Nice studio, man.
Yeah, it's all right.
We only fart in it and leave.
We don't do a lot here.
It does smell like ass, but you can't get them all.
The size of the pus on Luke's leg.
Have you gone public with this yet?
I've not shown it to him.
Oh, God.
Yeah.
I have.
I got.
Oh, no, you told me.
Yeah, I got staff.
I got staff.
Look, I've treated it.
You could argue that costs Kevin Lee the interim title, you know?
That and two knee surgeries.
You're almost turning like subway creatures here.
Yeah, dude.
I told that I was at the urgent care.
They were lancing it and draining it yesterday.
And I was like, I have to travel for work.
How do I dress this thing?
And they're like, oh, you need to do it for this.
They're like, where are you going?
I was like, I have to ride the New York City subway.
They're like, yeah, you need to keep that thing covered.
I was like, okay.
What brings you to town?
So I was just at a bachelor's party this weekend.
How did it go?
It went well.
Yeah, it was fun.
I don't want to see those guys for like a couple weeks at least.
But yeah, it was a good time.
We rented out a house at the Rockaways.
Is this the Hamptons?
The Rockaways.
Where's this?
Rockaway Beach.
Oh, yes, yes.
In Brooklyn, right?
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
Horrible beach, by the way.
Yeah, the beaches in New York City are trash.
Yeah, there was like bags floating. I think I saw a condom at some point floating around. It was tight, yeah. Horrible beach, by the way. Yeah, the beaches in New York City are trash. Yeah, there was like bags floating.
I think I saw a condom at some point floating around.
It was tight, though.
Did you run?
You should have been in Columbia with Craig Jones, Luke Rockhold, and a bunch of women of the night.
Yeah.
Yeah, maybe.
Maybe that would have been a better alternative than being with like 15 dudes in a house.
Do the ladies prefer the stash?
Because you're still in the game, right?
I'm still in the game.
That's right.
I think they prefer the stash? Because you're still in the game, right? I'm still in the game. That's right. I think they prefer the stash.
Yeah.
Well, the thing about the stash is either they hate it or they really, really love it.
Oh, I see.
Is there a type that hates it?
Yes.
And there's a type that likes it as well.
The type that like it, you can't bring home to mom, right?
You can't bring home to mom the type that likes it?
It depends.
It depends.
There's a spectrum within that.
But yes, you're right yeah how
south florida good um it's hot it's chill as in you know fun how's the what's the combat sports
in there because you went down there during the pandemic and it was raging i feel like there's
still stuff going on but i don't know if it's quite the same no it changed a lot i mean once
other states were letting combat sports events go down.
It chilled out?
Yeah, it chilled out.
Because it was Texas and Florida.
Remember where you can only have basically combat sports events because they don't care about.
Well, it was also Tai Chi Palace, but they never got paid back.
No, they never got paid back.
They never went there.
They never got paid back?
He's like, they're going to get a huge card for being willing to do that.
Also, I feel like North Florida is getting some stuff too.
Like, for example, they did the Jake Paul and the Mike Perry fight in, what, Tampa?
Tampa, yeah.
That's still Central.
That's Central Florida, yeah.
When I say North, I mean just north of South Florida.
No, it's still popping.
BKFC goes there often.
We just had PFL in Hollywood at the Hard Rock.
Almost saw that fight, by the way.
Almost saw that fight.
Which one?
The Brandon Allen.
Were you there?
I was there covering the event, yeah.
How did you miss it?
Oh, you left. Yeah, I left, event. Yeah. How did you miss it?
Oh,
you left.
Yeah.
I left.
Yeah.
We're going to be seeing that.
And have you seen this shit later?
You're going to,
we have to stick around for that,
by the way. You have to have you seen it.
Well,
I left,
uh,
I left that presser where Connor chucked the dolly at the bus.
Like five minutes after I left it,
that all went down.
I remember that we had the MMA beat.
Yes.
We hadn't,
we had a show.
We had to like postpone it a little bit.
Right.
I think we had,
I definitely had to do my radio show
I was on the subway in Brooklyn
And I'm like
Conor McGregor's at the presser
What the fuck is this?
And then all hell broke loose
Danny, I saw you briefly on the Baddest Tour
With Diaz and Masvid all there in Miami
Last time we talked though
You were crushing Spanish language content
Is that still a big part of your art?
Yeah, for sure
I have a YouTube channel called ablemos mma which is
let's chat mma and i do breakdowns have a weekly podcast on wednesday so tomorrow at nine um or
you know in two days and uh yeah i do interviews breakdowns previews the whole thing dude it's
actually like complete i was talking about this We had a call like last week.
It's helpful for me because obviously you put all the subtitles on there.
You get to hear a lot of different accents.
You get to hear a lot of different like ways that people speak.
If you want to learn Spanish.
What are you trying to learn Spanish?
I did have a run with Rosetta Stone.
Okay.
Well, subscribe.
All right.
All right.
I'll like and subscribe.
It's free. It doesn't cost you nothing.
Yeah.
It's a lot like Morning Combat Fridays.
Where we don't get paid. It's great. We haven't done them in a while all right daniel let's talk about
september 14th two events are happening as we all know but let's set it up for the audience
there'll be a canelo fight against edgar berlanga t-mobile t-mobile arena that's right do we know
if it's sold out or not i do not know that hey long island luke can you see what the ticket
sales look like for the canelo fight yeah look into it all right cool and then on the other
side we have the Sphere Show.
First of all, are you going to either of those?
No, I'm not.
No, okay.
Give me your temperature on both of those events.
Well, I feel like, again, I'm MMA media,
so the boxing side of things I'm not as familiar with,
but I feel like the Sphere is overshadowing everything.
Everything, right?
All my friends are telling me,
oh, the Sphere, the Sphere, the Sphere. like the sphere is like overshadowing everything everything right like all my friends are telling me oh this year this year this year so i feel like it's it's much bigger than the canelo fight
at this point and dana white has made a good job at you know saying how much money he spent on this
entire show oh he's promoted the shit out of the expectations he's raised honestly and it looks
pretty sick like the photos that have come out out of it and like you have alexa like with the
sphere behind her belt and all this.
And then you got, obviously, Sean O'Malley and Murab Dalish really fighting in the main event, which obviously, you know, very tied to the Mexican culture.
One of the three best fights you can make in the sport.
Which one?
Sean Murab, I do.
I believe it.
Three best?
Yeah.
I love that fight.
I don't agree with that.
So, I wanted that fight for the longest time ever, and I'm glad it's happening,
but I do think it's kind of weird that it's happening in the main event of Noche UFC brought to you by Riyadh Season.
I think it's the other way around.
They said it on the broadcast on Fight Night on Saturday.
They said, Riyadh Season presents Noche UFC.
Headlined by a guy from Montana and another guy from Georgia.
Let's talk Turkey.
How do you feel about that?
In some ways, you could say, well, look, it's just a sponsorship.
None of us are Mexican, but you are Hispanic.
You do talk to people in Spanish, and then you're certainly much more plugged in in that world than we are.
What is the prevailing feeling about that it's Noche UFC, but it's Riyadh season, and there's two guys at the top who are not Hispanic at all?
So the way I'm looking at it, I feel like the non-hispanic or the non-mexicans are like who
cares like we're getting a stacked card and it's true but a lot of people i feel like see alexa
such a historic figure obviously the first mexican uh woman to win a ufc title and it's like she
should get her respect she should get her main event there's that also the ticket prices are
ridiculous and you know the mexican audience especially like the people in mexico paying
pesos going to dollars like that's not gonna help so it's not their event as far as being as spectators.
But they did a fantastic job stacking it really with the future of Mexico.
If you look at those prelims, you have the future of Mexico right there.
I'm going to pull the card.
There's a lot more than that, though.
Long Island Luke tells me that ticket sales for the Canelo fight are not great.
Is that right?
Yeah, I'm seeing plenty left in, like, every section.
In every section?
Yeah, most of them.
90% of the sections I'm seeing seats available.
Which fight do you think will have more Mexican fight fans traveling?
Ooh, from Mexico?
Or even Mexican-Americans from, like, L.A. or something like that.
He already said it with the price gap, dude.
Yeah.
Probably. I guess you're going to be priced out by the Spirit. Who's not going to be priced out by the Spirit? already said it with the price gap, dude. Yeah, probably.
I guess you're going to be priced out by the, by the spirit.
Who's not going to be priced out?
And also Canelo's Canelo, dude.
Like it's almost a tradition at this point that you go watch his fights.
It doesn't matter who he's fighting.
But I don't say that negatively because I do like the element that for the sphere that
they're promoting it as one of one, that this is potentially the most unique experience
ever.
Let's start off.
Have you been to the sphere?
You know, they're going to do it again. Themf was one of one i mean just like dead and
company will probably find another way to tour because there's so much money to be made we have
been in the sphere one time for the dead and company not not sober have you ever been in there
for any because they have that daily nature movie there's a couple things you can there's a youtube
movie that they're going to start playing in there um what are your expectations? I mean, we can speak to it because we have been in there
and seen the screen, but whether you're watching at home
or you're covering it in the arena or you buy a ticket,
like, what is possible what they can do?
I mean, it's still, we're there for the fight.
Fighters are going to look this big depending on where you stand,
but they're probably going to be 600 feet tall in front of you.
What's that going to be like to watch a fight?
I feel like it's going to be sick, and I'm looking forward to it
because the UFC for the longest time didn't embrace a show right it's
always very standard every arena across the world looks the same this is going to look vastly
different and i feel like i was at the first nocha ufc uh last year and uh it looked different it
felt like a different product right like the graphics where was that music that was in vegas
that was at the t-mobile okay so um What was the main and co-main in that?
That was Grasso Shevchenko?
Grasso Shevchenko.
It was a fight night, though, not paper.
That's right.
It was on free TV for memory serves, yes.
So they did a great job with it.
I kind of entered...
I was a little hesitant about the event,
but I thought it came out great.
They brought in Brandon
in the English broadcasting team
because he's on the Spanish side.
Yes, that's right.
They brought him in as a guest for a few fights.
And I thought it was a home run.
So I'm really excited about this one.
I believe Dana White when he says he's really into the Mexican culture
and really wants to make this special.
So I think it's going to be something sick.
I think it's going to be dope.
You know what's interesting for me is, like, if you go to a Canelo fight,
we've been to a few of them now, when you're there man it's a king amongst his people whereas with this card at
the sphere i it remains to be seen who will actually be there i don't i don't know you mean
in terms of audience yeah in terms of the audience like what's the what's the breakdown the audience
gonna look like i genuinely don't have no idea what are we thinking is the minimum what like
2500 is around there uh i think it's dropped down to in the thousand like a thousand plus now and
by comparison the tickets that we
had were $300 each up
in the... Something like that, yeah.
The point I wanted to make was, do
MMA fans,
and I mean this without trying to be condescending,
I honestly am not,
do newer MMA fans
even understand why
we're celebrating Mexican
fight culture?
Like, boxing fans know.
Yeah.
Mexican nationals know.
Do newer MMA fans understand the relevancy of that?
I don't know.
And I'm not even being pejorative about it. Like, have we made that clear to them?
Do they understand the purpose of it?
I feel like a lot of those fans are not even boxing fans.
If you tune in, or at least you were in touch a little bit
with the boxing world,
you get it.
Because you obviously see all the big fights surrounding those two dates,
Cinco de Mayo and September Independence Day.
But yeah, I don't know.
I don't know if the new fans do.
I feel like it's going to be probably a surprise to them
once the broadcast rolls through,
and they're going to be like,
oh, it's Mexican Independence Day weekend.
I think that, yes, USC is going to hammer home the history of Mexican fighting, and I'm sure they're going to be like, oh, it's Mexican Independence Day weekend. Yes, USC is going to hammer home
the history of Mexican fighting
and I'm sure they're in that...
When certain dead songs came on when we were there for that
concert, it would just... I mean, everything
would change. The whole feel. Suddenly you're in a
rainforest or you're at the pyramids in Egypt.
It's so disorienting,
but it's so overwhelming and
you don't need drugs there to
experience that. I'm very intrigued.
The drugs made it
certain part of it scary for me
if I can be honest with you. I wish you went the full journey.
The disorientation? I wish you
were willing to talk to aliens
that way. I do. I took drugs that you
could buy on the Vegas Strip quite legally.
Okay. There were other drugs available.
I didn't take those.
Someone else in this room may or may not have
Gotcha, I wonder who
How was that?
How was the full journey experience?
I can't even put into words
It was the best concert by
10,000 miles
Are you going to be covering UFC?
No, I believe I'm going to be
Covering Canelo that night
I'll be doing some work for PBC that week,
so I believe I'll be covering the Canelo fight.
I'm actually more intrigued to see what it's like on TV.
How they are able to take something that is so immersive for an arena
and make it memorable on the TV.
I do think it's the future.
I don't know if you're seeing popping up.
I don't know if they're in California.
There's new bars that are popping up that have these.
Yeah, Cosm.
The one in L.A LA is called Cosm.
That is the future of watching combat sports
times one million.
Not just combat sports, any sport, because the
cameras are going to make you feel like you are in
the cage or on the football field.
The Sphere takes that
to another level.
But it's a user experience.
So what is it going to look like on TV?
How are they going to be able to hit those notes?
I'm not sure.
I have a feeling about this card.
I want to talk about some of the individual pieces because now that I'm looking at it, you're right.
There's a ton of Mexican nationals on here or just Mexican fighters.
I have a feeling.
Tell me if you think I'm off on this one.
There was a lot of consternation, less so about, hey, we don't have two Mexicans at the top of the card, but more about, like, hey, this card is kind of so-so.
And my thought is, okay, against, like, you know, UFC 298 or 299,
300 was obviously a little special, but 298, 299, is it on par with that?
No.
And I have no clue how they're going to show this either in the arena
or on to the audience without making everyone seasick. I have no idea how they're going to do it. That's a or on to the audience without making everyone seasick.
I have no idea how they're going to do it.
That's a good question, yeah.
But my thought is this.
BC, I didn't know what to expect from Dead & Company.
Honestly, if you had to pick music that I liked the least,
it'd probably be that genre.
Yeah, but you left too early before they started ripping into jam.
You did early on BC?
Three and a half songs.
Damn.
I wasn't mad at him because he got a taste.
I was there an hour.
I was there an hour.
And you had enough.
I had enough.
But hear my point. You were not there an hour. I was there an hour. I was there an hour. And you had enough. I had enough. But hear my point.
You were not there an hour.
I was there an hour.
I was there an hour.
Yes, I was.
Inside the place?
Inside the place, yes.
I was there an hour.
My understanding of time that day was a little discerning.
Yeah, you were a little bit loopy.
It was a little warped.
But I wanted to make this point to you, BC, to see if you agree.
If they pull off what I think could be done in this venue, I think some of
the criticisms about the card
are going to completely evaporate.
Yeah, I don't think the criticisms are that
serious. What I mean is
if you want to play the criticism of why
is it Riyadh season, does that matter? That's one thing.
If you want to play of the
why is it Riyadh season with the Mexican show,
I get it, but I think at the end of the day we want to
be entertained. The fights are good.
I don't think we're going to be looking at this.
I know their intention is to constantly celebrate
and win over the Mexican audience,
an audience they've wanted since the early Kane rise days,
and they haven't really not been able to cross over.
I think now with Grasso, with Moreno, with Rosas,
you went to the Lobo gym, right?
That's right.
The whole fabric is changing
slowly, but in that country where MMA...
Just a quick parenthesis, I saw the
Mario Arrios fight and Tank Davis with
Alexa Grasso's coach.
That's awesome. It was eye-opening. You were in Mexico
for that? Yeah, that was what, 2022?
Something like that. That was a good fight too. I don't
think that's going to be what we're talking about
afterwards, because this sphere is so much more
than Mexican Independence Day or Riyadh season. I mean, it's Turkey. Do you think Turkey's footing to be what we're talking about afterwards because this the sphere is so much more than mexican independence day or riyadh season i mean it's turkey do you think turkey's footing a
good amount of the bill of this through the sponsorship yeah 100 it's it's i think it's
only going to be about how good are the fights and i really like the card i do i really like the card
and i think it's going to be how do you present that on tv in a way i mean is it are you just
going to do close cameras it's going to be shot how a present that on TV in a way? I mean, are you just going to do close cameras?
Is it going to be shot how a typical one is shot?
And then we'll just see a couple of faraway shots?
How are you going to be able to bring in those elements?
Dude, but this is my point.
I didn't like the Dead & Company music.
It's not for me.
Right.
And I left that venue being like, that show was so incredible.
And I'm being dead serious when I say this.
If you go to Vegas, it does not matter who is playing.
Yes.
Go.
Yes.
Go to the Sphere.
That is how.
Dude, just show them the wallpaper on your phone.
This is literally from the show we went to.
That's sick.
Yeah.
And you could watch the colors of the paint in the water.
Right.
Kind of like, you know, circulate through the thing.
It was fucking mind-blowing.
Some people are like, this car is not that great.
I'm like, I don't know how they're going to present it.
It may not fucking matter at all by the time it's over.
Yeah, you can put an Apex car there.
You can put a Contender Series.
I'm sure it's still going to be like a banger.
I'm sure it's still going to be a sick experience for the person in the arena.
I do wonder how they're going to do it as far as like, you know, the shot, right?
As far as like how to get the whole thing.
So that's going to be very interesting.
But the card itself, I think the card is pretty good.
Maybe I'm a little biased.
Let's go through it here.
I want to start at the bottom, and then we go to the top here.
You're right.
There's a ton of great fights on here.
Opening up the card.
I never know whether to pronounce things like a gringo or not,
but it's Raul Rosas Jr. taking on,
I cannot pronounce the Chinese guy's names,
Ahr Kingling?
Ahtiliang, I names, something like that.
Caceres.
How do you pronounce it?
It's Caceres.
Yeah, but how did he pronounce it?
When Gareth A. Davis interviewed him in Spanish,
how did he pronounce it?
He said Caceres, okay?
I understand that. It depends
on the person. If he says
he prefers it, I will do it that way.
He pronounced it that way in the microphone.
Dude, he's a Hispanic guy from South Florida.
My wife heard me say Caceres.
This is a true story.
He knows my wife.
She heard me say it.
She stopped in her fucking footsteps and goes, Caceres?
No, Caceres is what exactly.
Yeah, but he does not show that respect to white people.
He does not.
He'll be like, Nate Maness, Maness, whatever.
Let's just go on.
I do.
And then you see him tripping around the Adesanya.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
What's that game called?
What's that game called where you dissect and then it vibrates?
Operation.
Operation.
Watching Luke try to say it.
Is it, you know, croissant, croissant?
After seven years of covering his career,
I know how to pronounce his name less than ever.
It's Adesanya, Adesanya.
Just say one and move on.
Okay, just say one.
Okay, opening about Raul Rosas Jr.
and about he should widely win.
He has become, this whole Chiwi Weez thing has been a huge hit.
I love it.
Yeah, it's sick.
He's also like, if you thought Sean O'Malley was like
reaching into this new audience and sort of the future, right?
Social media, et cetera. He's that times like a thousand. He gets it. new audience and sort of the future, right? Social media, et cetera.
He's that times like a thousand.
He gets it.
I mean, he is Gen Z, right?
Like he's part of that.
So yeah, the Hochi Wiwi thing is great.
I absolutely love it.
And this is appropriate matchmaking for him.
This is appropriate matchmaking for him.
They kind of pushed him a little bit too quick.
And now they're dialing it back.
This one I like.
And all I want from him is just to see steady application of his game.
All right.
Next bout on the card, a 155
contest. Manuel Torres
taking on Ignacio Bajamondes.
That's fight of the night right there. Yeah, let the rhythm take
you over on that one. That's fight of the night.
Let's bailamos.
Two killers, both strikers.
Manuel El Loco Torres, he's nasty.
Remember he got that elbow over
Mato, right? I don't know.
I'm sort of a white belt casual sometimes.
Bahamondes takes a lot of damage on the way, but he brings it as well.
Manuel Torres beats Chris Duncan and then Nicolas Mota.
Nicolas Mota.
The knockout, and then he did the John Cena thing.
You remember that knockout?
Yeah, I remember that now.
He brought me back with the Cena and the jorts and the steroids.
I got to ask you, as we're going down this card and
i'll ask you luke as well what do we think the fighters are going to go through are they going
to be able to look at this is it going to be like hoosiers when gene hackman measures that is 10 feet
to the rim in the butler field house just like in their crappy home gym it's still the cage at the
same dimensions but it's disorienting to be a fan in there and see some of this craziness i'm telling
you it's a factor i really wonder how they're going to do it i meanorienting to be a fan in there and see some of this craziness. I'm telling you it's a factor.
I really wonder how they're going to do it.
I mean, fighting the Apex in a small cage with barely a crowd
is a factor compared to a big arena.
A lot of these people have fought a lot of fights in the Apex itself,
not so many on pay-per-views.
I mean, this is stadium seating to begin with.
Do we know the capacity?
7,000, something like that?
What's the capacity for this sphere?
No, it's more than 7.
It seems like it's about 15.
I'll look it up.
It looks huge. That would explain why it's so expensive. Is that depth perception going to factor for the sphere? It's more than seven. It seems like it's about 15. I'll look it up. It looks huge.
That would explain why it's so expensive.
Is that depth perception going to factor into the fight?
Dude, I'm telling you, the depth perception,
certainly sitting in the audience, was a mind fuck.
The way I try to explain it is...
Wow, wait, Luke.
18,600.
Yeah.
It'll depend how they situate it and how they...
If they put seats on the floor, it could be even more.
The way I try to explain it is I can see my fingers, right?
If I go like this,
I can still see them,
but now I can't see them.
Same thing.
I can see my finger.
Now I can't,
the sphere goes well past any kind of line of sight.
And it's,
the sound is also immersive,
dude.
It is so fucking insane.
You have to look around,
right?
For the whole experience.
But also like there was one time,
like when we were watching the dead and company show,
they pull out of like a street and then a neighborhood and then,
and then the city and then the west coast and they pull
into outer space and then all of a sudden the satellite from space comes rushing past you
and dude everyone around me everyone around me was like whoa like it was this if you've ever been on
the soaring ride at epcot it was that again that's the that's the ride where you are sitting in like
a chairlift like a ski chairlift and there's a giant video screen in front of you that curves out.
It's almost like being in an IMAX room.
And then your seat will lift up, and it'll take you through like you're flying through the air.
I did the Star Wars one like that.
It's disorienting.
It gets you a little.
It's going to feel like that in a lot of ways for everyone sitting in the crowd.
I mean, is the default screen, do you think, when the fight's going on, going to be the fight?
This is what I've been wondering, because if you're fighting, you can see the default screen in the background.
So I don't fucking know how they're going to do that exactly.
It's all weird.
I would assume it's like a piece, and then the rest is like filler of something.
You can't put it all, right?
I mean, maybe you could.
You could.
I mean, we'll see.
It will be cool to be there, whether you're a media or a fan.
Yeah.
It would be very fair.
It's a once-in-a-lifetime kind of show, potentially.
It is.
Also, 125 on this card. I don't love this one so much edgar chaydez taking on kevin borjas
and he's edgar chaydez is a tough dude uh trains out of entram gym um he he he's been doing well
in the ufc where he's on a 235 win streak i think something like that he had a bunch of those
rematches yeah yeah with the brazilian kid uh the next one is interesting and i would love to get your thoughts on how her career has gone and i cannot pronounce her last
name very very well so please help me uh yasmin what eggy how diggy how diggy oh so my all my
years of horror guy was very disrespectful she's taking on ketlin's soza suza that is a hell of a
contest she did have that one loss which was very surprising i know i think you interviewed her coach after that fact yes what happened where is she now so um that was against um what's her name
she's a uh yasmin lucindo right yes she's been killing it so i no no no sorry no that wasn't
against yasmin lucinda that's who she debuted it with it was against uh denise gomes denise gomes
who's been killing it so i i think, and this might sound a little bit disrespectful,
but I'm going to say it anyways.
Yeah, we love that on the show.
I mean, that's what the show is about, right?
Disrespectful, but we're going to do it anyway.
So there's a term in Spanish, at least in Colombian Spanish,
called carro loco, which just means crazy.
Like when somebody plays soccer and they're just all over the place,
it's carro loco.
I feel like she's very skilled, but a lot of of that she's just a bit wild you got it you
got to polish her a little so it's ddp yeah yeah but it's working out for him but yeah so um she's
great she's still young she's like what 24 25 25 she rebounded against sam hughes a name that
people don't know but is actually a good fighter so she did have a nice rebound but that he was
killing me when she lost because i was like, oh, she's great.
And then he's like, what the fuck do you know?
Same thing.
I was hyping her up on Twitter.
And then next thing you know, she got knocked out.
We all wish we could have moments like predicting Ngana would wrestle gone or predicting.
Dude, you literally just walk into a room looking for the light switch and you manage to find it once.
I follow the vibes all the way to an OK Bet championship.
Okay.
At Women's 135, Irene Aldana taking on Norma Dumont.
Aldana had a nice rebound in that fight against, what was it, Ketlin Sosa, I believe.
That was a war.
No, sorry, Ketlin Vieira.
Ketlin Vieira?
No, no, no, no.
No, wasn't it against Lupe?
She just fought.
Lupe Godinez?
What are you talking about?
No, it's a different weight class.
That's a different weight class.
Who am I thinking of then?
It was Carol Hossa.
Carol Hossa.
Carol Hossa.
That was a crazy fight of the night where she got her leg all busted up.
Dude, it was a brutal ass fight.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
That was in December, so she hasn't fought in a while.
Yeah, which is, she probably needed some time off.
Oh, 100%.
That leg was a mess.
This one is interesting.
I think now we're on the main card.
Yeah.
Daniel Zellhuber, which is an interesting name for a Mexican guy,
taking on Esteban Ribovic.
Is that how you say it?
Ribovic, I think, is because he's Argentinian.
Oh, so it's a –
Yeah, yeah.
Okay, all right.
A lot of Europeans out there.
Yeah, that's true.
I love Argentinian men.
They're like the last gauchos, like Martin Bata.
Yeah, I bet you do.
Yeah.
In any case, Z huber i believe chain
trains out of extreme couture yes he's pretty good yeah it's a golden boy yeah he fights long
um but that guy in a thong right when i'm when i'm looking at these contests when i'm looking
at these contests it's just action fight action fight action fight action fight rolando rodriguez
lazy boy he debuted at the ufc event
in mexico in february he's huge in mexico he is he is huge he's got like any particular reason
uh he's just got a great story and he fought locally a lot and just really made a name for
himself but watch out for him i think that's what 125 right yeah he's taking on ode osborne yeah
dude he's sick he's sick go watch if you're unless you're diego lopez not withstanding we'll talk
about him in just a second but if you're Odey Osborne or somebody else on this card,
you have to know you're like the fucking B of B-sides.
You're like the B-side in these Saudi Arabia boxing matches.
You know what I mean?
Where Turkey's talking all week that once this guy wins,
we're going to match him with this guy and this guy.
There is real mod dream off, basically.
Yeah, yeah.
Well, he fought okay.
He fought great.
He fought okay.
But, yeah, you're the fucking B-side up in this bitch.
Okay, how about this one?
I would love to get your take on this one.
Brian Ortega, finally at 145, taking on Diego Lopez.
How big is Diego?
How well-known is he among Mexican fight fans?
He must be a huge hit.
He's going to be the favorite.
And I'm not talking about odds.
I'm talking about, like, he's going to be favorite.
The crowd favorite.
Yes, he's going to be the crowd favorite over Brian Ortega, 100%.
Even though he's Brazilian or be favored the crowd favorite yes he's going to be the crowd favorite over brian ortega 100 even though he's brazilian or resides in mexico diego lopez i had won people
over uh like crazy also the fact that he helped alexa make history because you know he's her coach
um dude that dude's killing it that dude's killing it right now and he's gonna i mean he's already
something big but i feel like he's gonna be one of the top five contenders for a while it's a
perfect match making at the right time yes i'm so glad they kept that matchup.
What's your feeling, heads or tails, who wins here?
Man, it's so tough.
I was like 50-50 going into it.
I do wonder where is Brian Ortega at this point
because we know where Diego Lopez is.
He wants the title.
He's hungry, right?
Brian Ortega, the whole weight stuff.
Dude, he has one more big win.
I know we said this about Conor.
We had him on the show.
He was all fucked up. Dude, he's got one more big win in him. You know it. Yeah, I don't know if win. I know we said this about Conor. We had him on the show. He was all fucked up.
Dude, he's got one more big win in him.
You know it.
Yeah, I don't know if it's this one or not, but I agree.
I didn't like the fact that pre-fight he was talking 155,
and I know that that fight was on short notice,
but still, the fact that he's just seeing himself at 155,
it kind of reminds me of AJ McKee at 145,
always talking about 155.
Sure.
It just seems like he was on his way out.
So I don't know i'm
gonna go with diego lopez but shit i mean you put those guys in a fight bro i can go and you can go
i didn't know if you had a strong feeling one way or the other there's no way uh then you mentioned
ronaldo rodriguez yeah it's hard to say it's a lazy boy but dude he's a killer lazy boy okay
then you have your co-main, Alexa Grasso,
taking on Valentina Shevchenko.
This is now what, their third meeting.
How did you score their second fight?
Do you remember?
For Grasso.
You had it.
Yeah, I think, I don't remember exactly the score.
It might have been 3-2.
Okay.
And to rehash our memories,
one judge scoring that 10-8 in round five,
Rob Shevchenko of the draw or regaining the championship? Let me go back here and look. Regaining the championship regaining the draw or regaining the championship?
Let me go back here and look.
Regaining the championship.
I believe it was regaining the championship.
Sorry, you're right,
because it ended up being a draw as a consequence.
Yes.
Now, the only thing is she's another-
That was BS.
There's no way that-
That was BS.
And I talked to her coach,
and they're like, yeah,
that round shouldn't have been a 10-8.
She's another year older,
but Shevchenko,
one of the greatest fighters
in the history of this sport.
Yeah.
If she did what is hard to do when you're in your mid to late 30s,
what's hard to do for any champion to regain the belt,
I think what Davidson Figueredo did against Brandon Moreno,
which people don't talk about enough at 34 to come back
and win that back after being stopped.
If she comes back and wins this, and she kind of already did
but got robbed on the cards,
how much would that escalate her legacy in our eyes here?
I always wonder if there's somebody that can surpass Amanda Nunes.
If there's somebody that can,
it's maybe her,
right?
Like,
I don't know.
Maybe too late without going through Amanda.
She may get a chance eventually if Amanda comes back and fights a lot.
That's right.
But,
but even looking at their,
they fought twice,
right?
Both of their fights.
I mean,
they were,
they were pretty damn close.
Oh,
I,
we both thought Valentina won the rematch.
And then the first fight at 196,
Valentina figured her out in round three
and then ran out of time in a lot of ways.
So I don't know if she sticks around,
is able to get the title back.
I don't know.
135 looks fairly weak right now.
I don't know.
Maybe go up and do something there.
I know she doesn't have the time,
but technically it's still a possibility.
So we'll see.
She's definitely one of the greatest of all time,
greatest flyweight of all time.
How celebrated a figure?
We're ranking who's most popular among Mexican fight fans.
Where does Grosso rank?
She's pretty big.
She's huge.
Obviously, winning the belt helped her a lot.
But she's been big for a while just because women's MMA in Mexico
wasn't really a thing.
And her and Irene together, just getting to Invicta,
all this, they've been pioneers on that end.
So, yeah, she's massive.
Doesn't Grasso feel like the perfect Mexican star at the right time
because she embodies so much of the Mexican fighting spirit,
a true professional, constantly evolving her game,
does not crumble under pressure but rises to the occasion.
Also, born, raised, trained in Mexico, didn't, like,
I'm not judging anyone who does leave, but she didn't.
And I think that my hunch is that probably plays a role as well.
That's huge, yeah.
Also, out of Guadalajara, probably the most Mexican state,
that's where tequila comes from, mariachi.
Is that right?
Yeah.
There it is.
I've never been to, you know what?
I don't think I've ever been to Mexico outside of an airport.
I really haven't.
Dude, Mexico's so safe.
I love Mexico.
I know.
I know.
You've been to what?
Cozumel or Cancun or some shit?
That's not Mexico.
I've been to Nogales.
I spent a day there.
I've been to Cancun, Tulum.
Tulum's cool, from what I hear, anyway.
I got big plans for Mexico City.
Did you go to a rave in Tulum or something?
No.
A rave?
A rave?
What, am I Shaquille Majore right now?
I mean, that's what Tulum is known for.
No, my honeymoon.
They got nice beaches.
I honeymooned in Tulum.
Yeah, they got nice beaches.
I had two cruises where I got off at Cozumel.
Yeah, you just said Cozumel.
I went to Playa.
Playa did something.
I went to, what's it called?
Potomac?
There's an amusement park that is based a lot on the natural resources there.
It's the one where you swim in the cave.
It's called Ishkaret.
You swim in the caves.
Cenotes?
Yeah, the cenotes.
Thank you.
Yeah, yeah.
I want to go to Mexico City.
Mexico City.
I was at a wedding for a vacation, and I met a guy from Mexico City, and he was telling me about it.
I got to go.
I got to go.
That's where my trainer's moving, Luke.
Is that right?
Yeah, my guy Darren Robinson.
He's just on the run from the law?
No, basically said that it's like being in Europe there.
The culture is just, you know, overwhelming.
Yeah, so tell me about this Lobo Gym.
Yeah, what do you want to know about it?
I mean, what was your feel?
You've been in a lot of gyms.
You've done a lot of reporting before.
Like what part of town is it in?
So it's on the outskirts of like the city of guadalajara so like it's it's not
downtown or anything like that and uh it's a dude it's a tiny tiny tiny gym and um it's i don't know
it's it's it's like on a strip mall it looks a little bit weird but once you get get in there
it's grimy it's it's it's got a nice vibe to really like it. And, dude, there's a bunch of killers there.
There's a bunch of really good talent out of there, specifically women,
which is a very bizarre thing, right?
Just the fact that, like, so many high-level women have concentrated in that gym.
Karina Rodriguez used to fight out of there.
She's now in Puebla training with Diego Lopez.
But those gyms are – so the way it works is Diego Lopez has a gym in Puebla
called Brazilian Warriors, and then Lowe Gym is in Guadalajara.
And basically, they're like two sister gyms,
and they have fighters go train at both places depending on...
How far apart are Puebla and...
I think driving just a couple hours maybe.
Okay, not far.
But I'm not 100% sure on that.
Did you get the vibe that in the way, I guess you could say
like when CKB came on the rise and they were
maybe in some ways changing the game.
Do you get that vibe? Like there's something
brewing there that we haven't even seen
the full bloom of it yet. Yeah, I
think there's a lot of women that are on the come up,
but even like the first crop, I guess
you had Alejandra Lara who fought for the belt
in Bellator. A Colombian national.
Colombian, yeah, that's right.
Karina Rodriguez, as I mentioned, former Invicta champion.
Irene, you got also Alexa, obviously, and there's a few others coming up.
And then as far as the men, Alessandro Costa, and he's fighting next event, I think.
And obviously Diego Lopez, but there's more on the way.
What's Entram, Jim, like?
So Entram is in Tijuana. I feel like that's more on the wave. What's Entram, Jim, like? So Entram is in Tijuana.
I feel like that's more of your vibe.
No?
Dude, when I was in the Marines and we were at 29 Palms,
they'd be like, okay, you can go to San Diego,
you can go to Las Vegas,
do not let us fucking catch you in Tijuana.
Don't fucking do it.
Yeah, a lot of crazy shit goes on there.
I've actually never been there,
but I have seen the movie Losing It with Tom Cruise a lot
where he went down to TJ
you guys should do a room service diary out of a hotel in Tijuana
I would fucking love to
how was that gym?
I haven't been but it's huge, it's a lot bigger
it's a lot bigger than Lovo
it's a huge operation
and they have so many fighters
it's crazy how many fighters they have in the UFC
and a lot of people go there because it is close to the border.
So you can fight in, you know, these like in Vegas and LFA, whatever,
like all these like events that are like near the border.
So you can just drive a few hours.
Even like, for example, Dani Bárez, who's from Spain,
goes all the way to Spain to train at Entram
just because he wanted to get his career going,
a contender call, whatever.
You know, an Apex show like Late Minute Notice, you're right there.
So that gym's pretty solid.
Obviously, Brandon Moreno most famously came out of that gym
and became champion, but they got a lot of talent.
Let's talk about the main event, which now has neither Mexicans
nor Hispanic people whatsoever, but it does have a very—
It's got Emmanuel Morab. He's growing into the Mexican community.
That's right. Fair enough. He's honorary, perhaps.
But it has shown him how to-
You know how that started, right?
Actually, don't.
So when he fought Henry Cejudo, there's a video on Twitter of Henry Cejudo saying, not to get all political, but like, oh, you'll never see me with the Mexican flag.
I do remember this, yes.
So Morab was like, okay.
And then he was taking the Mexican flag everywhere to the weigh-ins and everything.
That's almost like Conor McGregor wearing the C.J. Watson Warriors jersey to clown Florida.
That's on that level.
Damn. So a lot of the Mexicans have embraced him and then uh he went a step further so then they fought when was that fight in for the cejudo fight three 299 or maybe time is very relative
yeah that sounds whatever anyways a few months later it was the february in mexico city i think
and he went and he was in the crowd with the whole thing,
eating tacos. Murad seems to be everywhere.
Dude, yeah. He's a man of the people.
He's a man of the people. You'll see him in Have You Seen This?
Okay, let's talk about that fight for just a second.
Here's my thought on this.
Do you think it's one of the top fights you can make in UFC?
Without a question. So, I think it's a very deserving
like Murad deserves this, no question about it.
And what I would say, Danny, is
relative to Canelo Berlanga,
this is a champion fighting a real number one contender.
Not even that.
He's fighting, in my opinion, an uncrowned champion.
Sometimes you can get to that level, Tony Ferguson, Max,
before he beat Aldo, where you're like the uncrowned champion.
I feel like Murab has shown me.
Now, I know Umar is making this conversation difficult
because now he is suddenly becoming that guy.
Sure.
But when you get champion against sort of, it's unbeaten, right?
We haven't seen him wrap his kids.
He has a loss in grappling, and he's got a loss.
Ricky Simone.
Ricky Simone.
Ricky Simone.
Which, by the way, was the weird war of attrition, and he kind of like passed out at the end.
Allegedly.
Okay, but Sean O'Malley has been upset with the promotion of this fight because he has
said explicitly, hey, everyone's talking about the sphere.
Everyone's talking about the sphere.
Well, why aren't you talking about Murab and Sean?
He's right.
He is right, but at the same time,
it's like it is so much more relevant a fight
than Canelo Berlanga.
I don't know.
I kind of feel everyone's got a bit of a point here.
Okay, I want to ask you this.
What fight could or should have replaced it
where you put Shawn versus Murab in Vegas
at another big-time pay-per-view?
I mean, what would have been the proper main event
on the men's side to pair with it?
Dude, if Saudi Arabia's footing the bill,
why couldn't it have been Grosso and Shevchenko?
That's what I'm saying.
Dude, I've been going on a rant about that.
The rematch was a thriller?
Look, if the sphere is overshadowing whatever fight you want to overshadow,
and this O'Malley fight with Murab is big because Sean O'Malley is a star,
if you want to go that route and just put Grasso in there,
I think people are still going to watch just because of the novelty of the sphere.
People are just going to be like,
what does that look like regardless of who's fighting?
And again, if Saudi Arabia's got the bill.
The U.K. fans are like, hey, how come our shows are at like 6 in the morning and then the ones in Abu
Dhabi are local time? It's because the
Emirates are paying for that. Saudi Arabia
pays extra to get that
so that whatever trade-off the UFC has
to make on pay-per-view, they make up just because it's got guaranteed
money. Again, if Saudi Arabia
is footing the fucking bill,
don't get me wrong, I love the fight, but
I don't know if you need it.
Hard complaint, though, because it's such a great fight on top of a card that is so anticipated for so many extra reasons.
I do get what Sean is saying because the talk is, it seems, Sphere 1, Mexico 2, Saudi Arabia 3, Grasso Shevchenko 4.
And then, you know what I mean?
Like, seriously, that's.
So I want to ask you this.
Like, how much.
If Sean goes in there and stunts on Marab,
how big of a boost do you think he gets?
It's going to be huge,
because all the eyes are going to be on...
All my friends are like,
yo, this fear, this fear.
Like, when's that event?
Like...
Okay, Sean might have a problem with the promotion, okay?
But, like, once the event comes through,
once Fight Week comes through,
I feel like that's going to change.
Like, maybe right now it doesn't feel as big,
but especially once we get the fight rolling, and once we get a result, the winner of that is going to change. Like maybe right now it doesn't feel as big, but especially once we get the fight rolling and once we get a result,
the winner of that is going to be put in a huge platform.
Can you imagine winning the main event in the Sphere
and celebrating putting your hands up, getting on the cage?
It's going to be epic.
And then you are 700 feet in the air blown up on a giant screen.
I mean, yeah.
O'Malley creating epic moments, you know, the basketball thing.
There he's got a chance to do something.
Yeah, that photo, that's going to stand the test of time.
All right, let me ask you this about the sphere related to what we're talking about here.
We do feel like we have a system, although not called that, of majors in the UFC, right?
MSG, International Fight Week in July, December in Vegas,
and then I think for the fourth it can either be,
they should do a really big one in April, right?
I mean, we haven't really established a fourth.
Miami has got some big shows. But you get the
point here. Could the Sphere become
an annual... No.
If those majors are the Super Bowl, could
this be like the Olympic or the World Cup of MMA?
What do you think, dude? I don't agree, but... No.
I mean, this just happens to land on a pay-per-view
because it's technically 306, right?
But I think moving forward, it's probably going to be
Fight Nights. Dude, also, like... Fight Nights in the Sphere? Not in the moving forward, it's probably going to be fight nights.
Dude, also, like... Fight nights in the sphere?
Not in the sphere.
No, no, no.
Just Noche.
Yeah, Noche UFC.
I don't think it's going to be a yearly sphere thing.
Dude, the amount of fucking graphics
you have to get right to do a sphere show.
But if Turkey's around, that adds...
And then the other thing is,
a big part about the sphere,
and we teased on it by comparing the Canelo fight to this,
but a big part of... We can play we teased on it by comparing the Canelo fight to this, but a big part of it, we can play
all we want that this is about UFC
making Mexico an MMA
country first, and that'll continue
to take more time, but they're making inroads.
It's also to go up against the old guard
of these two
Mexican holidays in Vegas,
which is the UFC's backyard, and saying,
okay, Canelo, it just so happens that Canelo has
an opponent that we don't deem on the same level as the other ones, but it's their backyard and saying, okay, Canelo, it just so happens that Canelo has an opponent that we don't deem on the same
level as the other ones, but it's their way of saying, all right,
let's actually go head to fucking head. Same city, both on pay-per-view.
Let's do it. They softly did it last year with it being a fight night card.
You remind me of that. Why wouldn't this a become the fourth major,
but B you could escalate that even more by,
by saying every year it'll be at the Sphere and it's Mexico Independence Day.
And the other fighters, if the Sphere comes off well, will probably be fighting to want to be on that.
Because if you're a fan, think about it when Floyd and Manny weren't fighting each other.
Fans were boxing.
There were hardcore boxing fans.
But then there was a whole group of super casuals that only watched when Manny and Floyd fought in the hopes that they'd fight together.
And then when they did fight, they still would watch for that Floyd,
you know, can we, what if we get
to that point where you're like, okay, the only MMA watch
when I watch is that sphere card every year because it's fucking
badass. Why wouldn't you do that?
Is the price to turn off?
I feel like this fear is, one,
it seems like a headache, right? It seems like
a lot goes into it. And I feel like that's something that you
can move around for like a special fight.
Like they just happen to get that date and
maybe they want to, the T-Mobile, I don't know who got the
T-Mobile first. I don't know if it was
Dana claims that Al Heyman jumped
and blocked him knowing that they were
doing that. They weren't this fear because they couldn't
get T-Mobile. You could
argue that. Maybe. I think they also wanted
to be like the first show.
Because Eddie Hearn had
talked about wanting to do it. And I know there was an NHL draft there.
But I mean like a real.
Eddie Hearn wanted to do Katie Taylor Serrano 2 there.
And that's when Dana.
That was one of the reasons that Dana jumped in I believe.
I think that.
Do I think this is the first and last Sphere show?
No.
But a regular thing.
Yeah.
Well we don't know if it's going to work yet.
That's a big part of it.
That's the other part too.
Like how's it going to look on TV?
How's it going to look in person?
Also I don't think it's tied to a specific date.
I feel like if they'll do it every now and then. It's not going to be, oh, we can only do it in September.
And also, they're going to have residencies there, which you can get around, but that is going to be somewhat of a limiting factor as well.
Because you don't have residencies at MSG, for example.
We have a little bit of time left for many before we have to do Have You Seen This Shit.
The Canelo-Berlanga fight.
Dude, I'm in such a tough place with this fight because Big Red has made time for us to do media.
I appreciate that he's worked on his English.
Obviously, he's a fucking Hall of Famer right now.
If he stopped today, he's a Hall of Famer.
Dude, this fight fucking blows.
And they're going to charge $90 on pay-per-view for it.
You've got to give Berlanga credit, though, for at least trying to sell it.
He's been the MVP of most press conferences.
It's not convincing.
It's not convincing.
Am I wrong?
I feel like that fight could get maybe a little bit more interesting
once it gets closer. Yeah, because Canelo's
going to roll on him. He's going to roll on him.
It should be a fun fight. I don't know.
Would you say this is the same as the
Jon Jones situation with
Miocic? Pretty fucking similar. Very close.
I feel like the difference here is one,
Berlanga's literally like half the age of Stipe.
And he's undefeated, bro.
Yeah, Stipe at one time was a great fighter.
100%.
Berlanga's never been that.
The argument is that Berlanga doesn't have one of those wins that would propel you to this level.
Right?
He wasn't even necessarily in line.
He doesn't have the prerequisite wins.
And I'm saying because this is the way it's promoted in boxing, where they love to do Mexican versus Puerto Rican rivalries.
It's a storied rivalry in boxing.
Absent that, does Berlanga get this fight?
I don't think he does, right?
I think this is also part of Canelo
aggressively wanting to flex to everybody,
that you can say what you want about Turkey,
you can say what you want about
that everyone wants me to fight Benavidez and Crawford,
but not only will I do what I want,
watch, I will still make this a giant event
that will matter, that will sell out the building. If it does, we'll see what happens right there. That is a high price want, watch. I will still make this a giant event that will matter, that will sell out the building.
If it does, we'll see what happens right there.
That is a high price point, though.
$90 to fight fucking Berlanga.
But I'll give you credit.
It should be an exciting fight.
They put some names on there.
You got Roley, Caleb Platt.
You got Danny Swift Garcia.
Almost a Danny Jacobs.
DSG.
Yeah.
All right.
Last thing on this.
Do you feel like, by the way, it could be the reverse,
but under the situation that I'm positing,
if the UFC show is a smash hit and the Berlanga-Canelo fight is fine,
but whatever, do you feel like people are going to make boxing MMA comparisons?
100%.
Yeah.
It's inevitable, right?
This whole event is leading up to that.
I think who's going to be the better show, right?
Who's going to have, like, the most Mexican presence? 100 better show right who's gonna have like the most mexican
presence 100 all right because they didn't go head to head last year right remember canelo pushed off
the charlotte fight that's right october that's right that's right all right bc let's see your
feces danny i don't know if you've seen the show at length before if you've made it to the back end
of the second hour when it gets when it gets when it gets loose in turn four like dale senior in
daytona right wow i get i get a lot of letters about that joke i gotta pull that back get bitter When it gets loose in turn four like Dale Sr. in Daytona, right? Wow.
I get a lot of letters about that joke.
I got to pull that back. Dude, people get bitter about Dale Sr.
Danny, we're so happy to have you here for this weekly ritual we do that hasn't happened in a while
where I scour the internet, scour the globe for the good, the bad, the ugly, the high lows,
the in-between in the world of combat sports and beyond.
This is BC's Feces.
It's Have You Seen This Shit? Have you seen this shit?
Yeah, all right.
Guys, we always start with UFC Apex.
And Slava Claus, who's becoming one of the most entertaining TV fighters in the game,
he got his leg chopped up for three rounds and then still gave us the Russian victory dance.
Look, how do you not love this man? He is a great TV fighter if ever there was one i mean come on come on we need to protect guys like this that
always deliver on tv and mr faber's guy is one of them how is uriah faber aging in reverse that's
what i will fucking yeah i'll never get over that comment that we said to him remember when we were
we had him on the room service diaries we're like you know when you won the wec title and kind of
became the face of the small weight classes man man, your DMs must have been out of control, right?
And he no-sold us.
He was like, that didn't change much.
They were already pretty great.
He was like, yeah, I've never really had a problem in that area.
California kid.
You old white, washed white dads.
All right, let's keep it going.
Welterweight Michael Morales, Luke mentioned early in the show, improved to 17 and 0.
Look at that.
After dropping Neil Magny with that spinning back elbow
and then putting him away on the ground.
Hold that.
Ecuador, the fight game.
We have Chido Vera.
Now we got Michael Morales.
We talked about Entram.
He went from Ecuador to Entram.
He trains out of Tijuana.
Oh.
How long has he been doing that?
Before pre-UFC.
Okay.
He went to him and another Ecuadorian who's now in one championship.
They went.
They were like big fans of Chito Vera, saw his rise.
They moved from Ecuador to Tijuana.
They just literally showed up to the gym and be like, can we train here?
Yes.
And, you know, the rest is history.
By the way, fun fact, his coach, Raul Arbizu, has him training with Julio Cesar Chavez's first boxing coach in Tijuana.
I like that move. You can see the improvements
to his game. I don't know much about
the South American hierarchy of badassery,
but our Ecuadorians of the
two I know now in the UFC, they seem like absolute
badasses. I mean, Colombia produced
in the boxing game, they produced
badass sluggers always. A lot of these sides,
unfortunately. But Ecuador got some
backbone. Yeah, 100%.
Unfortunately, MMA in Colombia...
It's not there.
It's not there.
Lara tries.
She tries.
Have you seen that Colombian guy
at a one championship
they call Panda Kick?
I have.
Actually, a homie put me on.
He's in Muay Thai.
He's fucking awesome.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I think if I was South American,
I'd be Argentinian, dude.
I'd be a fucking gaucho.
I'd 100% you'd be Argentinian.
Yeah, well, because you're racist. I mean, that's really the... That's the common denominator. All right, hey. Speaking of South American, I'd be Argentinian, dude. I'd be a fucking gaucho. I'd 100% you'd be Argentinian. Yeah, well, because you're racist.
I mean, that's really the common denominator.
All right, hey, speaking of South America,
Brazilian featherweight Myron Santos won the featherweight ultimate fighter title.
Look at that.
Look at this brutality, dude.
In the underwear shorts.
Got a little Hardy Condit vibes there, right?
They both miss on the first hook and then catch him on the second.
Yes, yes.
It was a brutal finish.
This kid looks like he's got something going for him.
Again, I can't believe they put the Ultimate Fighter finale on an Apex card,
but hey, these fucking guys delivered.
Fair play to them.
And Luke mentioned in the Curtain Jerker,
maybe one of the biggest stories of this card, Wang Tong from China.
Bro.
K-O-1 in her UFC debut.
Do you not feel like she's a shot in the arm of the women's game already?
Dude, the Joker character she plays is sick.
I was doing other things this weekend, but...
Oh, yeah, you were getting fucking...
Yes.
Bro, look at her.
That was me this weekend.
That was me this weekend.
Yeah.
Dude, you see that sick one-two combo?
You don't see that in the women's game.
She's fucking great.
And she commits to the character of being sadistic.
I like that.
She knows she's better than these other women for the most part.
So you see that reflected in her attitude.
Floyd Mayweather was back this weekend.
I'm so bored by Floyd.
Rematched with John Gotti III.
In Mexico, by the way.
On his own pay-per-view for $49.95, they hit the people up with this.
Brent Burkos, my CBS compatriot, was telling me how long this card was.
It was like five and a half hours.
What we saw in the first round was something I've never seen in boxing before.
Do we have audio?
I guess not.
Who cares?
Come on, ref.
That's not.
Look at this dumbass pro wrestling bullshit.
So there were rabbit punches in round one that were called rabbit punches but weren't.
Floyd, as you can see, took exception.
It's a hook from long distance.
How can that be behind the headshot?
Who's commentating?
It's Corey Erdman and I don't
know who the other, sounds a little like Jamel Haring,
I'm not sure.
My point is, at the end
of round one, they swapped
referees.
Have you ever seen that?
I've never seen that.
In pro wrestling?
This is very close to pro wrestling.
The way their first fight ended.
This is pro wrestling.
It's very close.
But Floyd somehow complained enough
that they pulled, WWF style,
they pulled the referee out
and put a new guy in
and they restarted the fight.
Did they do tables, ladders, and chairs after this?
Oh, boy.
But on the undercard,
we did get 55 seconds of real boxing.
Kermel Moten.
Have you been following him, Danny?
He is Mayweather Promotions.
I'm 18.
I'm a boxing cash flow.
Mayweather Promotions' next big thing, now that they're no longer tied with Gervonta.
We interviewed him in Vegas.
This motherfucker has braces still.
Dude, he looks 13, and he just put it on some guy to improve to 5-0.
Now, the guy he beat was not super elite.
No, but to do that in 55 seconds and just demonstrably.
Okay, but he got eaten up on the IG comments being like,
why did you fight your Uber driver?
Why did you fight the popcorn guy?
But that's where he's at in his career, let's be fair.
They are matching him smartly.
They were matching him.
He had a featured fight on the Masvidal card, which a lot of people did see.
And then this was a featured fight on this card.
I don't know who saw this card,
but that's what happened.
Let's go to, let's keep it going.
The two best have you seen the shit moments
of my vacation that I mixed, that I missed.
The first one, Luke, involving our guy, Craig Jones,
who sold the shit out of CJI.
I hadn't seen this moment till last night.
The face off.
Did you see this, Luke?
I did.
When he arguably committed a bitch
man they made up dude piercings yeah I watched that did you see who she has
piercings yes that face-off they did with was it La Ronja the karate not the
La Ronja yeah that was like the interview that was a not only a 10 out Yes. That face-off they did with, was it La Rancho, the karate guy? Renato La Rancho, yeah.
You mean like the interview?
That was not only a 10 out of 10 comedically.
It was fucking awesome. I watched that in the eighth row just dripping tears.
That was the funniest shit.
Dude, when he picked up the dildo and then Craig Jones was like, that's a two-man job.
I fucking died.
Do you know none of that was pre-written or scripted?
That was a complete off-the-cuff?
Craig is a special.
Renato La Rancho, OG.
Oh, my God.
He's hilarious.
The other song we missed of the week,
Dan Hooker gave us the best soundbite from UFC 305.
Boys, that's right, that's right.
I love this shit.
Let's go, let's go, let's go.
Boys, that's right, that's right.
You hear the antic laugh,
and then very similar to Brandon Rios,
when he went in the corner
in the first Michael Alvarado fight,
which was a fight of the year,
one of the best brawls of the modern era,
he went in the corner to Robert Garcia.
Robert Garcia's like, you love this. He goes, I love this shit.
I love this shit. He reminded me of that.
Pretty great. Dude, Hooker's that dude.
Him and Oscar Willis probably do a lot of damage
together. Oscar Willis
is a complete dirtbag.
Alright, let's see our t-shirts of the week.
Luke, which pill would you pick?
Jesus.
And Luke, our second t-shirt of the week honors your home city here.
Okay.
I ain't ducking no smoke, boy.
You know where I'm at.
This is not it.
This is not it.
You got that one, Long Island Luke?
That's the next one I got.
Five.
Oh, that was a Jan 6 t-shirt.
Sorry.
We had an error in the process.
All right.
Let's keep it moving. I ain't ducking no smoke, boy. You know where I-shirt. Sorry, we had an error in the process. All right, let's keep it moving.
I ain't ducking no smoke, boy.
You know where I'm at.
Well, guess what?
Come see me then.
Bro, they just hit the second tower, bro.
You know, hanging up the phone has evolved over the years, Luke.
I don't know how that one got in there.
Let's go to MMA fighters in the wild.
Nobody, and when I say this, Danny, I mean it with great sincerity,
nobody loves 9-11 humor.
I wouldn't say love.
Love is an aggressive tone.
More than Brian Cameron.
You're very passionate about those jokes.
That is an aggressive tone.
I am very passionate about the Building 7 theories.
I really am.
But let's keep it going.
MMA fighters in the wild is always a good development.
This was outside the PFL arena here.
Where was this?
This was Danny's neighborhood.
This is at the Hard Rock in Hollywood.
That is Brendan Allen putting it on Marvin Vittori, and we argued earlier.
No, if you actually watch, he doesn't really land.
Well, we argued earlier, Danny, that the UFC pretty much has to make this fight, right?
Yeah.
I mean, it was booked, right?
And Vittori got injured.
Yes.
Now they're guessing they're doing email ball.
Remember when Vittori almost killed that dude in the hotel lobby for pulling out of
the, or missing weight and pulling out of the fight?
Yes, it was...
He fought...
Karl Roberson.
Yes, that's long.
Who ended up having real issues outside the cage after that.
More MMA fighters in the wild.
Remember when Steven Jackson almost killed that guy in the Palace Brawl?
Yeah, Mal's in the Palace.
Where Rob Devalish-Villy tried to double that.
Oh, I love that video.
He got heckled. I don't know where this is.
Yeah, and the guy all of a sudden goes, no, no, no, no, no.
Watch.
If you watch the guy he goes up to, he's like, no.
You see him waving?
Yes.
He's like, no, no, no, no, no.
No, no, no.
It's all good.
It's CJI.
Yes, it's CJI.
He does this.
And he takes the guy by the hair a little bit.
He doesn't do anything.
He just goes, look at him.
Look at him.
Oh, wow.
Look at that.
Remember that nerd in the crowd?
Shay goes real.
Shay goes real.
Yeah, it's like.
There should be more of that, man.
Like all these trolls getting away with a lot of shit.
Yeah, but also fighters, like, don't get in trouble for it.
Don't get in trouble for it.
This was fine.
This was fine.
I'm sure, yeah, that was a learning experience for me.
I've always agreed.
No, I get that Murab did that.
But I've always agreed that in any sport, if you pay a ticket, and I get that Murab wasn't fighting, right?
But you pay a ticket, you're allowed to say whatever you want.
Now, if you go way too far, if you go like past the line
and somebody jumps the thing and they beat you up, that's on you.
But to a certain, like, it was custom in my town
when we were like 21, 25,
to go to a minor league baseball game in Connecticut somewhere,
purposely sit near the bleachers,
get really drunk off of cheap beer,
and yell the most obscene things at the bullpen pitchers
to try to get them.
I went to a Mets game and did that. Once got Jose Mesa
to give me the blowjob sign and they called
the security to come remove me from the seats.
That's like rite of passage.
That's just good white trash fun.
He would really enjoy soccer.
He would really... That's what I try to explain
to this fucking idiot and he won't give in.
I'm like, dude, you are
built... If saying horrible shit to players is your thing... The sixth best sporting explain to this fucking idiot and he won't give in i'm like dude you're you are built if saying
horrible shit to players is your thing the sixth best sporting event i ever watched was when landon
donovan scored that goal against algeria yeah i danced on my couch like a real football that was
a fun little moment that was great for a shitty ass team uh poetan always makes it on these mma
fighter in the wild we saw him changing a tire recently going back to his old job here's here
him in the back i think it's Glover's backyard showing his archery skills.
Did you see this one before?
Yeah, I did watch that.
He kicks the ball
and then he hits it with the...
I've never seen this until right now.
This is insane.
This is like a clip.
I'm not kidding,
from like four years ago.
I'm behind the times, Luke.
Yeah, I've seen this before.
He kicks it up
and then he hits it.
Dude, this guy rules.
Now, it's been proven
that he didn't touch that woman inappropriately, right?
I don't know if it's been proven.
Outside of that, which seems to be proven that way.
Does he have a loss on his record, meaning in his court of public opinion to coolness?
I don't think he's had a loss.
Well, Izzy flatlined him.
No, that wasn't a loss.
I don't think that was an L on public opinion.
No.
No, he was.
Oh, yeah. Well's I'll say this
he's fucking
whatever it was
he's rebounded big time
yeah
watch Volkanovski here
channel his inner Ray Gunn
if you get the Olympic reference
on some TV show
the 36 year old white lady
who couldn't dance
did you see Casey O'Neal
hey
redo the dance
what else has he got
oh shit
he's got legit moves here
not bad
dude he's better than Ray Gunn.
Damn right.
Ray Gunn was just fucking shrimping on stage.
Luke, you love when white people go to the BMX track and hurt themselves?
Yeah, I want to see some teeth fly.
This one's called Double Jeopardy.
Oh, shit.
The bike was like, yo, fuck your teeth.
Luke, some people say the best fights
happen in the ladies' bathroom.
That's true.
Watch bigums here in the jean shorts
get John Cena on these bitches.
Look at the floor. You don't know how much piss and shit.
Oh my god, she's still standing. So there's also piss in the women's bathrooms?
Oh, well, I mean
this one is probably in the south somewhere.
Can we let that run again? Look at that chick
with the jorts holding shit, just knocking fools out.
You know what?
They're all sober and probably Rhodes Scholars, too.
Indeed, indeed.
Luke, the UFC 305 weigh-in show gave us some big-time moments
that deserve placement on this show.
Here's John Anik taking shots at Dom Cruz's dress.
Oh, hell, Cal.
Let's start with Dom and Cruz's sweater looking like fucking Mr. Rogers
out there
Sunday morning Saturday morning, whatever it is. So I actually I did just spent a minute with Israel
John attic off-camera
He's a fire plug this specific interview was right when he got there and you know
His journeys to Perth is like hell and back and you can see it in his eyes how fucking drained he was done i love when
he lets go we had him on rsd he was like calling out the ufc remember that yeah it was fantastic
uh here's dc this part's awesome
i gotta see what happens like do we jump in a car
and go a thousand
on the freeway
like
what do we get to do
like I wanna see what happens
when I go
I've done it once
and me and Jon Jones
have had some
we gotta protect DC
he's the best character
he put Conor McGregor
as number one
no listen
I gotta say Conor
because
when I saw him
when I saw him
piss off Khabib
and get Khabib to jump over octagons and all his brothers come in,
I was like, I've got to drink with this guy.
This is crazy.
Watch this ending from DC.
People jump over me into the octagon.
That was crazy.
I never thought I'd see two guys that openly seem to have
substance abuse issues on your list.
That's all you've got to do.
Hey, now.
This is an intervention.
This is a fun one.
Wow.
Wow.
All right, let's keep it going.
Here are our regional knockouts of the week.
KSW's Victoria Chizuska.
Left hook to right high kick.
Watch this.
Bah!
Hold that.
Hold that.
KSW tends to always.
And she's got, her name is just a series of consonants.
I don't know how to pronounce it.
And if it's fat white heavyweights, they'll show up here.
Here's Hidalgo, Texas.
Antonio Martinez giving us one of the best fat guy KOs in a while here.
Watch this.
These are the guys who win bar fights.
Oh, yeah.
I think one guy was 1-0.
One guy was making his pro debut.
Boom, bop, bop, whoop.
Damn, through the ropes.
Oh, I think he gave him a check into the ropes.
You know what he said to him there?
She knock a two-walker solo.
Big week for Jake Paul, officiated the Nganou-Faheyda face-off.
Danny, what do you think now seeing the size of these two large individuals?
Dude, I've interviewed Hanna in some of the PFL events that I've covered.
Dude, he's massive.
He's huge.
Fucking huge.
Dude, he towered.
Not towered over Nganou, but you never see Ngannou look small is what I'm saying.
Yeah, no, exactly.
I wouldn't be shocked if Hino Ferreira sleeps in Ngannou.
I'm telling you, it's completely on the table.
100% on the table.
It's making it a must-see fight in a lot of ways.
Jake Paul also played the heel role during his New York City press conference with Mike Tyson attacking the NYC.
Listen in.
Making history.
This is what it's all about for me man i'm a kid from
ohio hey new york shut the fuck up new york boo yourselves boo yourselves new york hey new york

That's just regular New Yorkers.
He closed with, what did he say, dumbass
Democrat city. Yeah, there you go.
They do have high taxes out here.
They do have high taxes. Also, the thing he was like,
he was good 20 years ago. Then why the fuck
are you fighting him?
Yeah, you're right.
Speaking of Ngannou, I don't know if you guys have seen this development.
Zapruder film experts have rewatched
the copy of UFC 270 when a
one-legged gone out-wrestled
got out-wrestled by Ngannou.
We're going to look at his package? Look at this.
Not only was
gone looking harder than McGregor at the
Floyd weigh-in, look at Ngannou
punch it. He felt it on his leg.
Dude, what is happening here?
You know what? This is a case where
punching the dong is acceptable.
That is the definition of a phoner.
Speaking of dicks in the wild,
did you see Canelo and Berlanga
at the end of their press conference?
Berlanga.
Berlanga.
A lot of jerking off here going on, right?
A lot of, like, hitting it from the back, motioning.
I have to say, this raised my interest.
Berlanga did stand up to it.
With the hip thrust?
Yeah, this one.
This one.
There it is.
There's the motion we're looking for.
Real pornography dick slap.
Yeah.
Speaking of dicks, you never know what you'll find at the swap meet.
Let's see this great teapot.
I don't know if I'm buying that one.
Okay.
Okay.
It also extends to pottery, if you allow it.
Did you ever see the movie Ghost, Danny?

People always think that I have short nails just so that I could play the guitar.
They're fucking wrong.
I'm gay.
Yeah.
Luke, you said you once knew a man in the Marines with one ball.
Yes, that's true.
Have you ever heard of a man with three?
Shout out to all the guys with three balls.
We up.
It turns out I have testicular cancer.
Oh my gosh.
Jesus.
And Luke, we've both come back from our vacations refreshed,
