Starting point is 00:00:00 I'm Georgia Howe with Daily Wire, editor-in-chief John Bickley. It's Friday, August 30th, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update. Nine people have died and 57 have been hospitalized due to a Listeria outbreak linked to Boershead deli meat. U.S. DA inspectors found multiple violations at a Virginia Boershead plant, including mold, mildew, and insects. A recall has been issued and Boar's Head has suspended operations and is working to disinfect the facility.
Starting point is 00:00:31 The company expressed regret over the recall and emphasized its commitment to food safety. A Brazilian Supreme Court judge has frozen the bank accounts of Elon Musk's Starlink holdings. Daily Wire reporter Tim Pierce has details on what happened. The judge, whom Musk nicknamed Darth Vader, froze bank accounts for Starlink to force Musk to pay fines lodged against another of his company's social media platform X. The judge has threatened to suspend all X's operations in Brazil unless Musk appoints a new legal representative in the country. X's previous representative was forced to flee Brazil after she was threatened with jail time. The judge also imposed sanctions on X, claiming Musk has refused to censor content.
Starting point is 00:01:13 Musk responded by calling the judge a dictator and vowing to defy court orders. The American Dream is out of reach for most Americans. A new Wall Street Journal survey found that while 89% of respondents said homeownership is important, only 10% think it's realistic. The poll also found that while financial security is a priority for 96% of survey participants, only 9% of them think it's realistic. Economists say rising costs of energy, food, and housing are key obstacles for today's Americans. Preparations for the ABC presidential debate are in full swing and controversy is swirling over Kamala Harris's debate coach. Reportedly, Google attorney Karen Dunn is prepping the vice president before the debate.
Starting point is 00:01:58 But Dunn is also listed as a lead attorney for Google in its antitrust case brought by the Biden-Harris DOJ. The Trump campaign believes it's a conflict of interest for Dunn to represent Harris while also being sued by Biden Harris in a separate suit. The United States versus Google case is set to go to trial September 9th, one day before the debate. Here's Jeff Hauser from the Revolving Door project. It's problematic that Karen Dunn has the ability to potentially get the next president of the country on the phone at a moment's notice. And she might also be negotiating on behalf of Google with the Justice Department in a few months. Shake Shack is closing six locations in California, citing the state's $20 minimum wage hike
Starting point is 00:02:47 for fast food workers as a key factor. Five of the closures are in Los Angeles with another in Oakland, reducing the number of stores in the state to 37. The company blamed the closures on increased labor costs, saying these locations were underperforming and no longer profitable. The closures come as other fast food chains like McDonald's and In-N-N-Out have also raised prices or reduced employee hours to offset the impact of the wage increase. And in entertainment news, Dennis Quaid stars in the much-anticipated Reagan movie as the beloved president. Rounding out the star-studded cast are Menace Hivari, Penelope Ann Miller, and John Voight, who spoke to Daily Wire culture reporter, Megas. Basham about the 40th president. It's always nice to be reminded of the people who
Starting point is 00:03:33 lift our spirits and do the job well. The job of the presidency is a huge job, obviously. And the weight of every decision is enormous. So it takes a certain kind of person to be able to deal with it gracefully. And he certainly did. He was remarkable. And it's nice to be reminded of that, you know. So that's why this movie is made.
Starting point is 00:03:56 it's made to give us a sense of pride of our country and when it's working well, how it accomplishes things. The Reagan movie opens today. Have a great Labor Day weekend, everyone. All right, those are your drive home updates this afternoon.
