I'm Daily Wire, editor-in-chief John Bickley with Georgia Hal.
It's Thursday, June 1st, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update.
After Twitter abruptly canceled a deal with the Daily Wire to stream its hit documentary,
What Is a Woman, due to, quote, misgendering.
Twitter owner Elon Musk has responded.
Here with more is Daily Wire producer and researcher, Brandon Bevel.
To celebrate the one-year anniversary of Matt Walsh's documentary,
the Daily Wire arranged a deal with Twitter to stream What is a Woman on the platform tonight.
But after watching the film, Twitter told the Daily Wire they would no longer provide any support
and would even limit its reach while labeling it as hateful conduct due to, quote, misgendering.
A few hours later, however, Musk responded saying the cancellation was a, quote,
mistake by many people at Twitter.
The Twitter executive chairman said that so-called misgendering is allowed on the platform,
though specifics of how the film's screening will play out tonight remain to be seen.
The streaming of the film begins at 8 p.m. Eastern on the Daily Wire Twitter page,
and the Daily Wire Twitter space will start 30 minutes before the film begins.
In the wake of the controversy regarding the LA Dodgers' decision to honor an anti-Catholic drag group,
the California legislature's LGBTQ caucus announced that it will honor one of the members of the group,
the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, in a Senate event.
Here with more as Daily Wire Culture Reporter, Megan Basham.
The LGBTQ caucus of the California legislature says it will honor Michael Williams,
who performs in a nun costume as Sister Roma as part of its June 5th.
5th recognition of Pride Month. Williams is also a podcast host who covers pornography and LGBTQ issues.
The caucus praised Williams as one of the most outspoken and globally recognized members of the drag group.
California Assembly Republican leader James Gallagher condemned his colleague's decision, saying,
would Democrats still embrace this group if they mocked Jews or Muslims?
Bigotry and discrimination against any religious group are wrong and have no place in
the Capitol. The U.S. Senate voted today to block President Biden's student debt relief program.
The 52-46 vote was bipartisan with Democratic Senators Joe Manchin and John Tester, as well as
independent Senator Kristen Sinema, joining the Republicans. Biden has said he would veto the Senate's
legislation. The controversial debt forgiveness program is also being challenged at the Supreme
Court. Last night, the Pentagon canceled its third annual drag show at Nellis Air Force Base
just as Pride Month was set to begin.
A Pentagon spokeswoman said that
hosting these types of events and federally funded facilities
is not a suitable use of DOD resources.
Those comments echo what Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin
and General Mark Millie,
chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff,
told Congress earlier this year.
Both men at the time seemed unaware
that drag shows had been hosted
at Nellis Air Force Base since 2021.
Listen, drag shows are not something
that the Department of Defense supports or funds.
That's the first I'm hearing about that kind of stuff.
I don't read those news stories.
I don't know what you're talking about.
I'd like to take a look at those because I don't agree with those.
Well, they're now in the official records.
Shouldn't be happening.
Thank you.
Thank you for that admission.
The Oklahoma Supreme Court has ruled that two state abortion laws,
one banning abortion after a heartbeat is detected,
and another banning the procedure in most cases,
were unconstitutional due to state precedent.
Governor Kevin Stitt, who signed both laws in 2020,
condemned the Wednesday court ruling and vowed to protect the lives of the unborn.
In the wake of illegal immigration laws signed by Republican governors in states such as Florida, Texas, and elsewhere,
activists and illegal aliens hosted a national protest day called Day Without Immigrants.
In cities from coast to coast, these protesters called upon illegal aliens to strike from work.
A Los Angeles jury found that 70s show actor Danny Masterson, guilty of two council,
of rape in a retrial on Wednesday, after several women he met through the Church of Scientology
accused him of sexual assault in the early 2000s.
Daily Wire reporter Trevor Mock has the details.
According to reports, the jury of seven women and five men reached the verdict after seven
days total of deliberation.
They couldn't, however, reach a decision on another sexual assault charge involving an ex-girlfriend
Chrissy Carnell Bixler, with eight of 12 jurors favoring a guilty verdict.
The alleged assaults occurred between 2001 and 2003.
Masterson now faces 30 years to life in prison as he awaits his sentencing date later this summer.
Those your drive home updates this afternoon.
