The dust is settled on the presidential debate, and both campaigns are declaring victory,
while the moderators come under increased scrutiny.
We discussed the fallout and the potential for a second debate.
I'm Georgia Howe with Daily Wire Editor-in-Chief John Bickley.
It's Thursday, September 12th, and this is Morning Wire.
More alarming developments with the migrant crisis in Springfield, Ohio, prompting the governor to send in state troopers.
This town has been ravaged by 20,000.
and migrants coming in. And I think that it's important for journalists to actually get on the
ground and uncover this stuff for themselves. Our reporter is on the ground to bring you the facts.
And RFK Jr. is already playing a key role on the campaign trail for Trump, but some battleground
states are still fighting to keep him on the ballot to boost Harris.
The Democratic National Committee has spent eight months suing me to keep me off the ballot,
and now they're suing me to keep me on the ballot in those states.
Thanks for waking up with Morning Wire.
Stay tuned.
We have the news you need to know.

With the first Trump-Harris debate now behind us, an election day just 53 days out,
each campaign is looking to seize control of the narrative.
Here to discuss is Daily Wire senior editor, Cabot Phillips.
So, Cabot, what are we hearing out of each camp as the dust settles?
Well, the Harris campaign has been saying that they won the debate, using words like strong
and optimistic to describe the VP, while painting Trump's performance,
as, quote, angry and weak.
They've also, in the last 24 hours,
been touting the newfound support of Taylor Swift,
who endorsed Harris during the debate.
For their part, the Trump campaign says Donald Trump
did not lose the debate,
but that it was the American people who lost,
thanks to the overwhelming bias displayed by those ABC moderators.
Republicans are still livid that ABC moderators,
David Muir and Lindsay Davis,
repeatedly interrupted to, quote, fact-check Trump,
while never once doing the same for Harris,
who, according to Daily Wire reports,
made more than a dozen false claims.
For example, Harris scoffed at Trump's claim
that she supported taxpayer-funded gender transition surgeries
for illegal immigrants in prison.
But in 2019, she felt out a candidate questionnaire
saying that she supported just that.
Later, she disputed Donald Trump's claim
that she supported mandatory gun buybacks.
That is, despite campaigning on the issue in 2020,
and perhaps most notably,
Harris emphatically claimed that she had made, quote,
very clear in her first presidential campaign
that she did not back,
a ban on fracking. But here she is in 2020 with a very different message.
There's no question I'm in favor of banning fracking. And this is something I've taken on in
California. I have a history of working on this issue. Now, a number of Trump surrogates I've
spoken to post-debate said that obvious pro-Harris slant from the moderators will actually
backfire. Trump's entire argument is largely centered on the fact that it's him versus the
elites. The Trump camp says voters will be actually turned off by the moderator's efforts sticking up on him
and that the average American still cares more about the economy, immigration, and crime
than they do a singular debate performance.
And to that point, a CNN poll before the debate found that Trump held a 16-point lead
over Harris on the economy.
After the debate, that number actually went up four points to 20%.
Here's one woman explaining her thoughts after the debate to Dr. Phil.
What is an opportunity economy?
What does that mean?
Because, in my opinion, giving people down payment assistance on houses just drives
inflation up higher. That's just the taxpayers coming out of pocket and hurting the middle class again.
So I was really looking for her to make an impact on my thought process tonight, and she didn't
deliver that. Well, that echoes a bit with the New York Times reported that people wanted to see
more details from Harris. So are we going to see another debate between these two?
Yeah, we still don't know. Harris initially turned down two of three debate invitations,
but moments after Tuesday's closing statements, her campaign reversed court.
saying they wanted another debate in October.
Now, Trump officials I spoke to said he would love to debate her again one-on-one,
but that a future debate would almost certainly turn into another three-on-one event,
similar to what we saw last night.
Here's the former president responding to that question himself on Fox News yesterday morning.
Well, I'd be less inclined to because we had a great night.
We won the debate.
We had a terrible network.
I think they were terrible.
They should be embarrassed.
So a second debate still very much in the air, it sounds like,
Cabot, thanks for reporting.
Anytime.

Springfield, Ohio has become the focal point of the immigration controversy.
The small city was called out during a contentious exchange on immigration during Tuesday's presidential debate.
And now Governor Mike DeWine is sending in state troopers to help with the crisis.
The town of 60,000 people has been forced to accommodate as many as 20,000 Haitian migrants under the Biden-Harris administration.
Daily Wire investigative reporter Spencer Lindquist is on the ground in Springfield to look into the various alarming claims.
coming out of the area.
Hey, Spencer.
So you attended a city commissioner's meeting Tuesday night.
Can you tell us a bit about what residents are saying?
Residents of Springfield are frustrated, turning to elected officials, begging for help and for
answers.
One resident, a 58-year-old woman, testified that public safety has deteriorated so much that she rarely
leaves her home.
And when I do, I'm armed, and I have my son of 20-pound pickle with me.
I've been followed.
I've been grown.
I'm 58 years old.
The influx has come in so fast,
and they haven't been educated on our ways, on our laws.
They need to know these things.
Many other residents echoed her concerns over public safety
in the wake of the migrant influx.
Several complained about the roads becoming far less safety to migrants,
disobeying traffic laws, or not knowing how to drive altogether.
Last August, a Haitian migrant ran into a school bus,
killing 11-year-old Aidan Clark and injuring several others.
A few months later, in December, a woman was struck and killed in her own driveway.
Her daughter-in-law spoke about the incident at Tuesday's meeting.
Everyone is talking about the death of ducks and cats in this town,
but I'd like to talk about the death of one very special person, my mother-in-law.
She was collecting her trash can from her driveway when a car struck and killed her instantly.
A Haitian immigrant was allegedly driving, recklessly, when he struck and killed her.
I say allegedly because to the state there's been no punishment, not even for the expired tags on the vehicle he was driving.
The road safety concerns led to an effort to ramp up law enforcement, but the residents I spoke with said it's not enough.
And meanwhile, they're paying the price.
Our insurance rates are going through the route because they're saying Springfield is a high risk area.
It's a band-aid on a hemorrhaging artery.
One of the more sensational claims has been that Haitian migrants are eating low.
animals, there's been some pushback to some of those claims. Has that been confirmed?
So city officials have claimed that there are no reports of that behavior related to pets,
but on the ground testimony, again, bears out differently. J.D. Vance touched on this when
pressed about the issue by CNN's Caitlin Collins. First of all, city officials have not said
it's not true. They said they don't have all the evidence. They said they have no evidence.
We've heard from a number of constituents on the ground, Caitlin, who both firsthand and secondhand reports
saying this stuff is happening. So they very, very.
clearly, meaning the people on the ground dealing with this think that it is happening.
The Federalist actually released audio confirming that the police received a report in August
about four Haitian men poaching geese in a local park.
I see a group of Haitian people.
There was about four of them.
They all had geese in their hand.
And I saw that.
I'm like, yeah, this has got to be reported.
How many geese did they have?
They each had one.
So in addition to public safety concerns, what else have we heard from residents?
People at the meeting told me that many jobs in the area are going to the migrants,
sometimes at the expense of American citizens.
I've got a grandson who worked for Dole.
He was out there a week.
He was hired, went to work one day, suited up and everything else.
The guy come out and he says, we don't need you anymore.
Asians took over the job.
And health officials are sounding the alarm on infectious diseases like HIV and
TB. In 2021, there are 12 new cases of HIV in Clark County, 47 and 2023, and 2024 is on track
to be even higher. More than a dozen communicable diseases reported by the county's health department
are showing the five-year trend increasing. Now, this all follows the Biden-Harris administration's
decision to grant more than 100,000 Haitians protected status so they can remain for now in the U.S.,
correct? That's right. The administration is repeatedly touted that as an example of their generous
immigration policies. In fact, here's Vice President Kamala Harris touting a program granting temporary
protected status to another 100,000 Haitians. We gave TPS temporary protected status to Haitian migrants,
55,000. And then more recently, we extended temporary protected status to over 100,000 Haitian migrants
for that very reason, that they need support, they need protection. Now, like you mentioned at the top,
things have gotten so bad in this little Rust Belt town that Governor DeWine is sending in state troopers,
and he specifically puts the blame on the Biden-Harris administration, saying it doesn't have any kind of plan to deal with the issue.
Well, Spencer, thank you for reporting there on the ground in Springfield.
Yeah, we've really just begun digging into what's going on here.
And we'll look forward to hearing more from you soon.
Michigan Supreme Court has ruled that withdrawn independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. must remain on ballots,
while other battleground states are removing his name.
Here to discuss is Daily Wire Reporter Amanda Prest to Giacomo.
So Amanda, first, tell us about this latest ruling out of Michigan.
Why does RFK's name have to stay on the ballots?
Hey there, Georgia.
So the state's Supreme Court, which is majority Democrat, said that Kennedy did not show
that he's entitled to have his name removed from Michigan ballots.
This is despite him ending his presidential campaign last month and requesting to be removed.
The decision reversed in appeals level ruling that said RFK was entitled to the removal.
A quick refresher, Kennedy wanted his name removed from ballots in battleground states to potentially help Trump defeat Harris in November.
He had to sue to try to get his name removed after Michigan's secretary of state, Jocelyn Benson, who was a Democrat, refused to take him off ballots.
And notably, Benson was simultaneously fighting to get left-wing independent candidate Cornell West off Michigan ballots, since that candidate would theoretically hurt Democrats in November.
Right.
Democrats lost that battle on Monday and West will appear on ballots.
Unsurprisingly, Kennedy's team viewed this ruling as political.
His attorney said the decision has nothing to do with ballot or election integrity,
but the court's aim is precisely the opposite.
Two quotes, have unwitting Michigan voters throw away their votes on a withdrawn candidate.
Cabot spoke to Kennedy before the debate and asked him what he thought about Democrats
keeping him on the ballot in Michigan.
He said this is what the Democrat Party has become.
Today, the Democratic Party is about depriving Americans.
or manipulating the elections using lawfare and weaponizing the agencies and the courts against
the American voter. And the voter is the victim ultimately.
So that's the situation in Michigan. What's the status in the other battleground states?
Kennedy was able to remove his name from seven battlegrounds, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Nevada,
Florida, Arizona, and North Carolina. North Carolina came down to the wire with a ruling just this
past Monday. His name had already been printed on ballots and more than half of the counties
by the time he withdrew his candidate seat. He also won't appear on Georgia ballots since he didn't
qualify in the first place. Kennedy is still fighting to take his name off ballots in Wisconsin.
This is going to be an uphill battle. RFK himself has acknowledged that he's, quote,
running against the clock. Now, RFK voters have been a wild card for this whole election cycle.
Is it pretty clear at this point that the majority are going to be breaking for Trump?
It looks that way. But his voters have been a wild card for this whole election cycle. It looks that way.
but his voter base is pretty unorthodox and not clearly left or right.
His campaign slogan is Make America Healthy Again,
and he has really courted wellness enthusiasts.
Daily Wire senior reporter Mary Margaret O'Lahan recently reported on RFK's popularity with that crowd.
Here's what she told Morning Wire.
They have really big social media accounts with many, many followers,
and they're telling me that these followers are really interested in the thought of a candidate
who's willing to talk about chronic disease, ultra-processed foods,
and the effect that these things are having on American health.
One of the influencers I talked to named Courtney Swan, she told me and I'm quoting,
I've been waiting my entire adult voting life for a presidential candidate to acknowledge how sick our country is.
Online health influencers are a growing force on the political landscape,
and RFK was the first semi-mainstream candidate to really court that audience.
I think we can expect major party candidates to take notice of that
and attempt to do the same thing going forward.
So if that's his legacy, it's significant.
Well, in just the past few weeks, we did see Trump sit down with Kennedy to try to understand some of these health issues.
It'll be interesting to see if Harris attempts to do the same.
Yeah, I mean, there's definitely a huge interest in that space.
Right. Amanda, thanks for reporting.
You're welcome.
Thanks for waking up with us.
We'll be back this afternoon with more news you need to know.
