I'm Georgia Howe with Daily Wire, editor-in-chief John Bickley.
It's Monday, August 19th, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update.
The Democratic National Convention kicks off today in Chicago,
where top Democrats will officially nominate Vice President Kamala Harris for president,
with Minnesota Governor Tim Walls as her running mate.
Meanwhile, anti-Israel protests are currently demonstrating all around the convention,
reflecting the rift within the party over U.S. support for Israel.
Tonight, key speakers, including President Biden and former President Barack Obama,
will address the party as Harris prepares to accept the nomination on Thursday.
The four-day event will focus on the achievements of the Biden-Harris administration while charting a path forward.
A Republican-ledged congressional investigation alleges that President Biden engaged in impeachable conduct
by abusing his office to enrich his family.
Daily Wire reporter Tim Pierce has more.
A newly released 292-page report claims Biden used his position as vice president to participate in foreign business schemes that funneled over $27 million to his family.
The report also accuses Biden of joining meetings and phone calls with his son Hunter's business associates from Russia, Ukraine, and China.
House Republicans argue that Biden's actions amounted to a conspiracy to benefit his family financially.
Here's former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi reacting on Fox News.
It's very frightening for national security.
And we also know that he took documents home while he was vice president,
very sensitive classified documents,
that he had no legal right as vice president to do.
So it's very troubling and extremely dangerous for our national security and the American people.
An illegal immigrant is behind bars for allegedly raping a 10-year-old boy in Mississippi.
The Pontotoc County Sheriff's Department says 34-year-old Filipperto Gonzalez was arrested.
on August 12th and faces two rape charges. The incident comes amid a string of alleged sexual assaults
involving illegal immigrants. In New York City, multiple arrests were made in similar cases,
including suspects from Senegal, Nicaragua, and Guinea. It remains unclear when and where
Gonzalez entered the U.S. A Washington, D.C. Councilman known for pushing anti-Semitic conspiracy theories,
has been arrested on federal bribery charges. Diliwire reporter Amanda Prestizakamo has the latest.
According to court documents, Councilman Tran White Sr. allegedly accepted over $150,000 in kickbacks
while using his position to influence city contracts worth over $5 million.
In addition to all of that, the FBI says White took $20,000 to resolve a contract dispute.
White gained national attention in 2018 for controversial comments suggesting Jewish financiers
control the weather, remarks for which he later apologized.
The councilman has also faced criticism in the past for ties to anti-Semitic figures.
Here's how the advisory neighborhood commission of Ward 8 reacted to the arrest.
You know, everyone is afforded the opportunity to have due process,
and we must allow that process to take place.
You know, we have to just wait until the facts come out.
And Secretary of State Anthony Blinken says that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
has accepted a bridging proposal aimed at securing a ceasefire with Hamas in Gaza.
DailyWired deputy managing editor Tim Rice has the latest.
The plan, brokered by American, Egyptian, and Qatari mediators, could resolve months of stalled negotiations.
Talks are expected to continue this week in Egypt amid growing fears of a wider regional war,
and as Hamas pushes back against the proposal, which it claims favors Israel.
Netanyahu's approval of the proposal followed what Blinken called a pivotal moment in negotiations.
According to Blinken, this is the last opportunity to end the conflict and secure the
release of the hostages still being held in Gaza.
We've coupled this effort with an intense diplomatic campaign, working with countries around
the world to send the message strongly to every concerned party not to take any steps that
would escalate tensions, that would risk provoking a wider conflict.
It's been one of our primary objectives to prevent the conflict from escalating from spreading
in other places.
This all comes a day after a bombing in Tel Aviv that Hamas and Islamic jihadists have claimed joint
responsibility for. The blast killed the apparent bomber and injured a passerby. Israeli police say the
explosion, which occurred near a synagogue, was an attempted terror attack. All right, those are your
drive home updates this afternoon, but before we go, be sure to tune in tonight to our live
coverage of the DNC, which will be going on all week. And it's going to be hosted by familiar
voices to Morning Wire fans, Daily Wire senior editor Cabot Phillips, and Culture Reporter Megan
Basham. They'll host the top political voices. We'll be streaming the keynote speeches from
Hillary Clinton and, of course, Joe Biden tonight. We'll also have analysis from Daily Wire's own
Michael Knowles, plus some of our favorite political commentators offering analysis and fact
checks. You'll also see Daily Wire reporters Spencer Lindquist and Cassie Akiva inside and outside
the arena, bringing you the ground coverage of, among other things, those protests outside the event.
We'll kick off tonight at 745 Central on Dailywire.com.
Thank you.
