I'm Georgia Howe with Daily Wire Executive Editor John Bickley. It's Monday, August 10th, and this is Evening Wire. A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Western Columbia this morning. The epicenter was about 35 miles outside of Pereira. That's a city of half a million people.

Dozens have already been confirmed killed. The tremor shook and emptied. buildings over much of the country. Officials expect the death toll to climb much higher in the coming days and weeks as emergency crews dig through rubble. The quake comes just after two similar earthquakes hit Venezuela and killed more than 6,000 people. President Trump's initiative to clean up the streets of D.C. hits its one year anniversary tomorrow. Daily Wire contributor Tim Pierce has the latest. The Justice Department says the results over the past year have been extraordinary with more than 16,000 arrests made and thousands of illegal drugs and firearms confiscated. Of those arrested 35 are homicide suspects and more than 100 are known gang members.

The administration also touted 35 missing children who have been found and returned home. The president says Washington has now become one of the safest cities in the world. We took something that was in deep trouble. It was a graffiti-filled crime-filled mess. We turned it into Shangri-La. We turned it into a great place. The Make DC Safe and Beautiful Task Force launched last year after a series of high-profile violent crimes that included the assault of a doge staffer and the murder of a congressional intern.

The security has come at a cost that the Pentagon estimates will top $1.4 billion by the end of Trump's second term. A boat captain faces 13 counts of reckless endangerment after his vessel capsized in New York Harbor and killed a 27-year-old woman and a five-month-old girl. 14 people were on board the boat when it flipped just off Liberty Harbor where the Statue of Liberty stands. Police divers pulled the victims from the water and took them to the NYU Langone Hospital, Brooklyn, where they were pronounced dead. Investigators are looking into what caused the boat to capsize and if it was operating as an illegal charter. A New Jersey family was shocked to discover a swollen eight-foot Burmese python living under their shed. Daily Wire Lifestyle reporter Lauren Bear has the story.

A New Jersey woman made a shocking discovery while watering her flowers this past weekend. The exotic reptile was seen slithering through Leslie Daly's backyard, headed towards her shed. On careful inspection, they found a hole big enough to allow the eight-footer underneath. Leslie, along with her husband, Ed, called officials, who were quick to send a private contractor who removed the shed's floorboards. Beneath them was the python, who was quite content and portly due to his last meal. which X-rays would later reveal to be a possum that was eaten whole. But how did the Southwest Asian snake get to New Jersey?

The answer, exotic snakes can be owned legally in the state with a permit. And what likely happened is someone who'd imported Python eggs either accidentally released this one or let it go once it became too much to care for. The snake was removed without harm by a professional handler and is now living safely within a secure enclosure. AOC made headlines this week when she announced she had begun the process of freezing her eggs. The 36-year-old and her longtime fiancé have been together for more than 10 years and have remained unmarried despite a reported engagement nearly five years ago.

Now the Congresswoman sparked conversation online when she publicly announced that she would be freezing her eggs. Aside from the IVF debates it sparked, Onlookers suggested that the announcement could be another sign that AOC is considering a presidential run in 2008. We'll have more on this tomorrow morning. New Orleans has become the first major city in the United States to put artificial intelligence on the front line to field emergency calls. Philly Wire reporter Leona Salinas has the details. The Orleans Parish Communication District, which handles more than a thousand emergency calls every day in one of the busiest systems in the country, is now routing some of those calls through an AI system.

That system determines which calls need a human dispatcher right away, and which ones the bot can handle on its own. Carl Fasol, the executive director of the Orleans Parish Communication District, has been clear that the AI is not meant to replace people. He said the system is mainly used in two situations, when a caller is within about 200 meters of a crash that has already been reported, and when every human call taker is already busy. Dispatchers, however, are not as optimistic.

One who had worked the line for 11 years said this was, quote, the worst idea you could possibly think of. He explained how an AI might struggle with a caller who spoke poor English, was having a panic attack, or even potentially pretending to order a pizza while being held hostage. The dispatcher says, it's all about the tone of your voice and what's being said, and added, quote, you need a person.

Over a dozen food products from major producer Taylor Farms have been recalled due to jalapeno peppers infected with salmonella. Sandwiches, salsas, and dips that were distributed across 26 states were affected, with items found at chains like Target, Kroger, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Walmart. While a full list of the food items can be found on the Taylor Farms website, most of them have a best if used by date up to an including August 16th. This incident follows another recent Taylor Farms recall of iceberg lettuce, and the company

said that for both cases, they believe they have identified the source. Last night, Mark Zuckerberg's Super Yacht seemingly ignored a request for health. from a nearby ship. The $300 million $387-foot vessel called Launchpad was the closest when calls for aid went out. But rather than try to help, the super yacht remained stationary as a much smaller cruise ship, Wilderness Legacy, literally passed by from further out. The captain of the Wilderness Legacy reportedly explained the billionaire's, quote, refusal to his passengers over the intercom. And according to one passenger, this was followed by, quote, unanimous booing for Zuckerberg. In response, a spokesperson said Zuckerberg and his family were not on board and then argued that the super yacht was operating on a totally different radio channel.

The Coast Guard later noted that while the ship was requesting assistance, it was not in distress. WNBA star Sophie Cunningham is reportedly shopping a tell-all book. Reporter Lyndon Blake has more. Sophie Cunningham was thrust into the spotlight after taking a hard stance against men and women's sports, a move that put her in direct opposition to much of the league. Sophie has faced fierce backlash for her stance and possibly some extra aggression on the court. Just a few days ago, Sophie took a hard foul to the head during a game as another player closelined her, leaving her with a bloody mouth.

Sports Illustrated responded to the gruesome incident, calling it, quote, karma for Sophie's political stance. With countless new supporters and just as many new detractors, many are eagerly awaiting Sophie's book to hear her side of the story. And positive news for loggerhead sea turtles. The species set a new record for nests along Georgia's Atlantic Coast beaches, with the count surpassing 4,100 this year, the highest since monitoring began in 1989. Thanks to preservation efforts, the Atlantic nest count in Georgia has risen about 4% annually since the 90s and has far surpassed the original benchmark goal of 2,800 nests annually. Key factors supporting the recovery include daily patrols by volunteers who mark and protect

the nests. Plus, the use of turtle excluder devices on shrimp trawlers since 1990. The levels are still below the all-time highs seen in the 1950s. All right, those are your drive home updates.
