Republicans score a massive win in the Supreme Court, and Marco Rubio declares an end to the NGO-industrial. complex. I'm DailyWire executive editor John Bickley, Georgia's off today. It's Friday, December
Starting point is 00:01:06 5th. This is Evening Wire. In a massive merger, Netflix announced today that it's acquiring Warner Brothers, including its film and television studios, HBO Max and HBO. Daily Wire Entertainment reporter Amanda Harding reports. The total value of the deal is nearly $83 billion. Netflix co-CEO CEO Ted Sarandos touted the deal in a statement saying, quote, has always been to entertain the world. By combining Warner Brothers' incredible library of shows and movies, from timeless classics like Casablanca and Citizen Kane to modern favorites like Harry Potter and Friends, with our culture-defining titles like Stranger Things, K-pop Demon Hunters, and Squid Game, will be able to do that even better.
Starting point is 00:01:51 In a major win for Republicans, the Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Texas could forge ahead with its newly redrawn congressional map ahead of the 26 midterms. Daily Wire political reporter Cameron Arcand has more. In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court will now allow for a map with five more seats favoring Republicans to go into effect, solidifying a push from the Texas GOP earlier this year. Justice Samuel Alito wrote in his concurring opinion that there was a, quote, strong inference that the state's map was indeed based on partisanship, not race. Meanwhile, Justice Elena Kagan dissented, saying that the court stay ensures that many Texas citizens, for no good reason, will be placed in electoral districts because of their race, which she said is a violation of the Constitution.
Starting point is 00:02:40 There are mid-decade redistricting efforts happening in blue and red states ahead of 2026, as the Justice Department is now suing the state of California over its new maps passed last month with five new Democrat-favored seats, meant to counter the actions of the state. of Texas. In more Texas news, the state's bathroom bill went into effect Thursday. Here with Morris Daily Wire reporter Lyndon Blake. The Texas Women's Privacy Act requires you to do your business in the bathroom that matches your biological sex. State Senator Mays Middleton wrote the bill to save female multiple occupancy private spaces in Texas, including restrooms, locker rooms, changing rooms, from being invaded by men. The bill also requires the Texas Department of criminal justice to house inmates according to their biological sex and domestic violence shelters made for women to only serve women and their children. Here's Middleton at a press conference over the
Starting point is 00:03:34 summer. It's common sense to want to make sure that we don't allow men in women's private spaces like restrooms and locker rooms and showers and family violence shelters and prisons. And these are boundaries that have existed for generations. And they're boundaries based on biological truth. They're boundaries based on biblical truth. And so what this bill does is it restores those boundaries and makes them enforceable. Just last month, the woman in California went viral for complaining about men being in the women's locker rooms at her gym. Tish Hyman has since put pressure on her state leaders in California to keep women safe. New York City's mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani is vowing to end the sweeps of homeless encampments when he takes over
Starting point is 00:04:23 next month. Daily Wire Reporter's Actual has the details. New York City currently urges residents to report homeless people who have established encampments on public property, declaring in New York City obstructions and encampments are not allowed. City officials say they've received more than 45,000 complaints about the homeless encampments so far this year, but Mamdani said Thursday that he'd put an end to the sweeps. The self-described Democratic socialist Momdani insists the current policy has failed because it does not connect homeless New Yorkers to the housing that they so desperately need. He added, quote, What we have seen is the treatment of homelessness as if it is a natural part of living in
Starting point is 00:05:01 this city when in fact it's more often a reflection of a political choice being made. Some of the fraudsters in the massive Minneapolis-Somali welfare fraud scandal allegedly have close ties with Elon Omar. One of the convicted fraudsters Salim Ahmed Saeed allegedly was a member of Representative Omar's inner circle. Omar held events including her 2018 campaign victory party at the Safari restaurant, Said owned that venue and used it to enrich himself with welfare funds meant to feed children in need. Omar also introduced the legislation during COVID that was abused by her constituency.
Starting point is 00:05:36 But Omar blames the lax safeguards against fraud for COVID emergency relief. The U.S. is overhauling how it distributes foreign aid. DeLewire Foreign Affairs reporter Cassia Akiva has a story. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Thursday that they would prioritize their direct investment in partner nations and eliminate waste by bypassing the, quote, NGO industrial complex. Rubio unveiled the new policy during the signing of a $2.5 billion health cooperation framework with Kenya.
Starting point is 00:06:04 The U.S. will provide up to $1.6 billion over the next five years to support priority health programs, while Kenya will increase domestic health spending by $850 million to foster its health self-reliance. Rubio said that the previous system funneled aid through NGOs that absorbed funding through overhead and administrative costs while limiting the host country's control. We would go to a country and say, we're going to help you with their health care needs. Then we would drive over to western, northern Virginia somewhere, find an NGO, one of these organizations, give them all the money, tell them, go to this country and do their health care
Starting point is 00:06:38 program for them. That NGO would then take about some percentage of that money for their overhead and administrative costs. And by the time it got down to it, the host country, very little influence. It was sort of imposed on them. and only a percentage of the overall money ever actually reached the patients and the people on the ground. This episode is sponsored by the University of Austin, Texas. You know college is broken.
Starting point is 00:07:05 Activist professors, seminars that feel like struggle sessions, $80,000 a year to hear Hamas chants on the quad while being told America is evil in class. So what's the alternative? It's called the University of Austin, or UATX. At UATX, students are in small seminars taught by great professors. They read the great books of Western civilization to learn from them, not tear them down. They build actual companies on campus with mentorship from a vast network of top entrepreneurs and investors. You can be openly Christian or Jewish without apology.
Starting point is 00:07:35 And when you walk into the main atrium, there's a giant American flag. UATX admits students based purely on test scores, so the application takes just five minutes. Oh, and another thing. Tuition is completely free. Forever. It's funded by American patriots who want to create the Navy SEALs of the mind. not another generation of credentialed activists. Starting point is 00:07:58 That's u-A-U-S-T-I-N.org. A Harvard professor detained by ICE after a Boston synagogue BB gun shooting has agreed to voluntarily leave the U.S. The Wire Assistant editor Andy Valdez reports. The Harvard Law School professor is a Brazilian national named Carlos Portugal Guvea. He was arrested after allegedly firing a BB gun outside of a synagogue. He told authorities that he was, quote, hunting rats. He was in a pretrial probation on a misdemeanor charge of illegally using the air rifle,
Starting point is 00:08:30 and he was also suspended by the university pending the investigation. Synagogue leaders said in an email they did not think the act was fueled by anti-Semitism. Regardless, the Department of State promptly revoked his temporary non-immigrant visa, and now he's heading out of the country. A federal grand jury decided not to indict New York Attorney General Letitia James Thursday in what's being called just a minor setback for the Trump administration. Federal prosecutors brought a revised mortgage fraud case against the AG, who'd infamously vowed to take down Trump before taking office,
Starting point is 00:09:02 and then found a way to slap him with a massive civil case. The jury's decision will not prevent another indictment from prosecutors. They have a six-month grace period to refile their initial charges. James is looking at up to 60 years in prison and $2 million in fines if convicted. A Christian evangelist battle with a Mississippi city over street preaching took center stage at the Supreme Court this week. Daly Wire Culture reporter Megan Basham has more. Justice has heard arguments Wednesday that could have far-reaching consequences for Americans
Starting point is 00:09:32 who want to defend their constitutional rights in federal court. The case revolves around whether 33-year-old Gabriel Olivier can challenge an ordinance from Brandon, Mississippi, that restricted street preaching in a public park. Olivier was convicted in 2021 of street preaching outside of the designated area. But he's now attempting to overturn the ordinance on First Amendment grounds. Olivier told the Daily Wire in an interview, quote, this is a really important case for Christians specifically, because I noticed that all around the country,
Starting point is 00:10:05 there's always an exercise of free speech that does not seem to be cracked down on the way that Christians' free speech is nowadays. California has opened a tip line to report federal officers like ICE agents, a move that comes as Democratic leaders in the state attempt to thwart, Trump's immigration agenda. Daily Wire's senior editor, Virginia Cruda, has more. California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced the tip line on Exxon Wednesday, asking people to send in tips if they believe a federal agent is abusing their power or acting unlawfully. The webpage specifically names ICE, border protection and the National Guard as examples of entities
Starting point is 00:10:42 that could be reported to the state. GOP assemblyman James Gallagher turned the tip line back on Bonta, however, writing, quote, how about if you think state agents or officials have abused their power or committed unlawful acts? As KCR reported, Banta is facing scrutiny for using roughly $500,000 in campaign dollars for legal assistance as part of a federal bribery case probe. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, widely recognized as a leading figure in AI, gives credit to President Trump for saving the AI industry.
Starting point is 00:11:16 Dailywire reporter Breckestold reports. Wasting no time addressing American energy on the very first night of his presidency, President Trump declared a national energy emergency. He stated, an affordable and reliable domestic supply of energy is a fundamental requirement for the national and economic security of any nation. Jensen Juan told Joe Rogan that Trump's actions so far have saved the USAI industry. The fact that he came into office, and the first thing that he said was drill baby drill, his point. Point is we need energy growth. Without energy growth, we can have no industrial growth. I got to tell you flat out, if not for his pro-growth energy policy, we would not be able to build factories for AI. And another week, another crazy robbery case. This time the thief swallowed the item, but the police were
Starting point is 00:12:08 able to retrieve it, quote, naturally. Here's Daily Wire's Senior Editor Joel Needler. Police in New Zealand said today that they've recovered a Faberget egg pendant. That's worth some $19,000, and that was inspired by James Bond. It was stolen six days before, with the suspect being accused of swallowing it. Officials say the piece was retrieved Thursday night and released a photo of it being held by a gloved hand. Police said in a statement, quote, no medical intervention was required and the pendant passed naturally. Not exactly an appetizing thought there. All right, there's your drive home updates. To learn more about these stories, go to Dailywire.com. And in case you missed it earlier today, we covered some major stories.
Starting point is 00:12:46 including the FBI finally arresting a suspect in the January 6 pipe bombs investigation, Trump brokering yet another peace deal, and DHS bringing the receipts in the fight over the immigration narrative. Thanks for tuning in. We'll be back tomorrow morning with a weekend edition of Morning Wire.
