The Supreme Court has restored the Trump administration expanded system for checking voter citizenship against federal records, allowing states to resume
Starting point is 00:02:06 sweeping voter verification using social security numbers and immigration data. The administration says the system helps prevent non-citizens from voting, while critics warn that unreliable records have wrongly flagged eligible citizens and led to canceled registrations. The ruling blocks a lower court order that halted the system, with the court's six conservative justices in the majority and the three liberal justices dissenting. The decision comes ahead of November's midterm elections as Republicans seek to maintain control of Congress. Republican Senator Mike Lee is sounding the alarm after a new report found that 30,000 non-citizens were registered to vote since 2000. Immigration reporter Jenny Tair has more. Roiders reported Wednesday that more than 30,000 self-declared non-citizens
Starting point is 00:02:53 had been added to the voter rolls due to, quote, software glitches and clerical errors across 11. states, California, Illinois, Iowa, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and Virginia. How many of those non-citizens actually voted is unknown. In a speech on the Senate floor the same day, Lee blasted those standing in the way of the Save America Act and say the new report is yet more proof that we need better protections. That thing that they claim never happens. Voter fraud or non-citizen voting just keeps happening. over and over and over again. Mr. President, it should not be any easier for someone to get away with voter fraud
Starting point is 00:03:38 at a polling location on voting day than it is to cheat the Olive Garden through its never-ending pasta pass. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is casting doubt on the drowning death of 18-year-old black teenager Nolan Wells during a 4th of July boat trip in Mississippi, suggesting Wells was murdered by his white friends. Take a listen. Nolan Wells was a star athlete, and yet the claim is that he accidentally drowned. Nolan Wells allegedly gave his keys,
Starting point is 00:04:13 his wallet, and his cell phone to his friends. Why in the world would he do that? An independent autopsy found that Nolan Wells had trauma and severe bruising, to his head. And yet, that appears inconsistent with an accidental drowning. A lot of questions remain. We're going to make sure we get the answers. Justice delayed for Nolan Wells will not be justice denied. The grand jury, which included black jurors, found that Wells did in fact die by drowning, with no evidence of a fatal injury or physical altercation. After reviewing testimony from 43,
Starting point is 00:04:57 witnesses, more than 100 subpoenas, GPS data, and surveillance footage, the grand jury concluded the evidence supported an accidental drowning. Iran's president said in a sit-down interview with Fox that the current Middle East conflict is all America's fault and that Iran does not want a nuclear bomb. Foreign Affairs reporter Kassi Akiva has the latest. Iranian president, Massoud Pezikshan, insists that despite Iran's history of being the largest sponsor of terror and enriching uranium past what is needed for a civilian nuclear program, they don't really want a nuclear bomb. Pezichshan claimed to Brett Baer Thursday that Iran would
Starting point is 00:05:34 submit to international inspections for its nuclear program and that all it wants is peace, but that the United States just won't allow it. Here's part of the exchange. Do you want a nuclear bomb or not? Not at all, not at all. Our martyred, esteemed supreme leader, he had announced several times that from a religious decree, it is unholy, it is religiously illegal to have weapons of mass destruction. Why do you do that if you don't want to hide it? We said we're willing to dilute them. It's not a big deal.
Starting point is 00:06:16 We are willing to submit ourselves to verification, sir. Russian President Vladimir Putin's party has secured a record number of seats in the lower house. That's according to the full results released today by the Kremlin following a three-day balloting that ended Sunday. The main Kremlin party United Russia will now control more than three quarters of the seats in the lower house, which NBC notes is a record high. The tightly orchestrated vote excluded virtually any genuine opposition, the outlet reports. It also saw a decade-long record of 60 percent turnout of the 111 million eligible voters. The parliamentary election is the first held since Putin launched the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Starting point is 00:06:58 Notably, four regions of Ukraine seized by Russia were included in the election another first. An Indianapolis elementary school teacher has been sentenced to two years in prison for encouraging and filming fights between young students in his classroom. Julius Jonakin, who's 25, was caught after accidentally showing a parent a video of her seven-year-old son with special needs being beaten by another student during a parent-teacher conference. The video showed a classmate repeatedly punching their son while Joniken can be heard saying, quote, that's right, you get him. I know you want to get him when he does things. The footage exposed what prosecutors described as a pattern of, quote, fight club style classroom brawls, which started happening routinely at the school just weeks after Jonnigan began teaching there in 20. 23. Chinese AI startup Deepseek has doubled its annual revenue rate in just a few months,
Starting point is 00:07:54 hitting $1 billion. Associate producer Garrafan team has more. It's now reportedly looking to go public soon. Meanwhile, here in the States, the New York City Council is preparing to limit the AI industry, including banning businesses from using or selling any AI systems in the city that haven't met its inspection protocols. They also want AI companies to include a, quote, kill switch that would allow a human-controlled shutdown if the AI agent goes rogue.
Starting point is 00:08:29 The new regulations are expected to be introduced next Friday. Nearly 170,000 pounds of raw beef, pork, and goat products are being recalled after federal inspectors discovered the meat carried bogus USDA inspection labels. Lifestyle reporter Lauren Bear has the story. The falsified labels were discovered after people noticed that the establishment date was egregiously wrong, reading, quote, established 1363, which would put the Department of Agriculture's founding more than 400 years before the United States was formed, right alongside historic events such as the expansion of the Ottoman Empire in Thrace, or the Battle of Lake Poyang and China before the Ming Dynasty.
Starting point is 00:09:11 The USDA was actually established in 1862 under Abraham Lincoln. North Carolina-based star meat delivery shipped roughly 168,000 pounds of meat to a Georgia distributor, which sent the products to retailers and restaurants nationwide. The USDA classified the recall as its highest risk level, warning of a reasonable probability of serious illness or death, although no illnesses or injuries have been reported. Consumers should throw away the effective products or, turn them to the place of purchase, and always check the date.

The fire department says that they were able to rescue two women from an adjacent building who were both injured and transported to a hospital. ABC notes that local media also reported, that a passerby was slightly injured from the incident. The cause of the explosion is under investigation, but a gas leak is suspected.
