I'm Daily Wire, editor-in-chief John Bickley, with Georgia Howl. It's Tuesday, October 1st, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update. Iran launched its largest ever direct attack on Israel today, firing hundreds of ballistic missiles. Videos circulated online appeared to show the moment that,
Starting point is 00:00:32 some of the missiles exploded on the ground, while most were thwarted by Israel's Iron Dome. Iran said the attack was in response to the killing of Hamas terrorist leader Ismail Hanea and Hezboa leader Hassan Nasrallah. The International Longshoremen's Association, which represents 45,000 dock workers, launched its first strike since 1977 this morning, after contract talks stalled. ILAW! All the way! Daily Wire reporter, Marade Allorty, has the latest. The union is pushing for wage hikes, improved benefits, and safeguards against automation at ports.
Starting point is 00:01:15 The U.S. Maritime Alliance reportedly offered a 50% wage increase and improved retirement contributions, but the union rejected that deal. Union boss Harold Daggett gave a heated response to a reporter who asked him if he was worried about how this affects the everyday American. People never gave a shit about us until now, when they finally realized that the chain is. being broke now. Cars won't come in. Food won't come in. Clothing won't come in. You know how many people depend on our jobs? Half the world. And it's time for them and time for Washington to put so much pressure on them to take care of us because we took care of them and we're here 135 years and brought them where they are today and they don't want to share. While President Biden has the power to
Starting point is 00:02:00 intervene by invoking the Taft-Harley Act to pause the strike he has so far refused to, union workers say they're ready to stay on the picket lines for as long as it takes. North Carolina communities continue to struggle in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene's devastating flooding. Daily Wire reporter Amanda Pressa Giacomo has more. Dozens of people in the state have been confirmed dead, and hundreds still remain unaccounted for as power and communication outages continue. Many towns are still cut off from crucial supplies like food, water, and fuel. residents fear that the rebuilding process could take years since bridges and roads have been washed away leaving entire areas isolated.
Starting point is 00:02:41 Relief efforts are underway, but the scale of the damage is immense. During a press conference earlier today, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper gave an update on that recovery status. Across the region, more than 460,000 customers are without power, down from a peak of more than a million. More than 1,100 people are being housed in 29 shelters. We're working together to open more major routes to push supplies forward while repairing roads, utilities, and communications. I-40 East from Asheville is now open, and I-40 West into Asheville will be opening this morning. But we continue to ask people to stay off the roads in western North Carolina unless travel is necessary. It's still dangerous on many roads, and your presence can impede rescue and recovery efforts that are under.
Starting point is 00:03:32 underway. Recovery efforts are also underway in Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee. Governor Gavin Newsom has signed legislation preventing local governments from requiring ID at polling places. The law specifically targets efforts in conservative cities like Huntington Beach to enact voter ID laws. In March, residents of Huntington Beach voted to pass an ID check provision, but a month later,
Starting point is 00:04:24 California's AG and Secretary of State sued the city to invalidate the law, claiming it disproportionately impedes low-income, elderly, and minority voters. California is one of 14 states that do not require voter ID for elections, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Past surveys have found about 80% of Americans support voter ID laws. Ahead of tonight's debate, the Harris Walls campaign is revising claims regarding Walls's past trips to China. Daily Wire senior editor Cabot Phillips reports. After the Minnesota governor previously stated that he had visited the country, quote, dozens of times, the campaign clarified the number of trips is closer to 15. The revision comes
Starting point is 00:05:06 as Walls faces growing scrutiny over his potential ties to China and its ruling Communist Party, raising questions about his past interactions and transparency. Yesterday, House Oversight Chairman James Comer issued a subpoena to the Homeland Security Secretary regarding documents linking walls to the Chinese Communist Party. That subpoena, which was prompted by a whistleblower, specifically seeks information from a non-classified DHS group chat, as well as classified documents. DHS secretary has until October 7 to respond. And as recovery efforts from Hurricane Helene continue, stories of determination and communities
Starting point is 00:05:40 coming together have begun to shine through. When impassable roads turned what's normally a two-hour drive into a seven-hour ordeal, David Jones set off on foot from South Carolina to Tennessee. The destination, his daughter's wedding. After trekking through mud and debris for 12 hours, he made it. Just in time to shower and walk his daughter down the aisle. She had no idea about her dad's job. journey at the time. He walked me down the aisle. It was until the reception that he was like a story of
