I'm Daily Wire, editor-in-chief John Bickley.
It's Wednesday, April 17th, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update.
In defiance of 227 years of congressional history,
the Democrat-led Senate refuses to hold a full impeachment trial
against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
Democrat Majority Leader Chuck Schumer quickly made.
move today to dismiss both articles, asking for a truncated debate rather than a full trial.
Republicans, including Senator Eric Schmidt of Missouri, objected.
Never before in the history of our republic has the Senate dismissed or tabled articles of
impeachment when the impeached individual was alive and had not resigned.
As Senator Schumer said in 2020, quote, a fair trial has witnesses.
A fair trial has relevant documents as part of the record.
A fair trial seeks the truth.
nothing more, nothing less.
I will not assist Senator Schumer in setting our Constitution ablaze in bulldozing 200 years of precedent.
Schumer's motion to dismiss the two articles as unconstitutional passed along party lines,
killing the trial before it began.
Republicans say Secretary Majorcas has failed to do his job and comply with U.S. immigration policy.
They've also condemned the Democrats' dismissal of the trial as an attempt to give political
cover to President Biden.
Columbia University's president, as well as members of the college's board, were
grilled today by the House Education and Workforce Committee in an anti-Semitism hearing
regarding faculty comments.
During her testimony, President Namat Shafik agreed that some professors had crossed the
line.
Congresswoman Elise Stefonic pressed Shafik as well as board member Claire Shipman about
Professor Joseph Mossad, who's made several anti-Semitic statements and openly voiced support
for Hamas' brutal October 7th terror attack.
Stefanik pointed out the Mossad is the chair of Columbia's academic review committee
and argued that he should be removed.
Here's some of that exchange.
So he hasn't been removed as chair.
I would like to confirm that to you.
Do you have my commitment?
He'll be removed as chair today.
I have my commitment that I will come back to and give you the facts.
So he hasn't been removed.
Let me ask the board of trustees, is that acceptable that he's chair of this committee?
Should he be removed today?
Ms. Shipman?
Congresswoman, you've put your finger on one of the hardest issues we as board chairs face right now.
I think you can see our systems from the videos you played, everything you're talking about,
our systems of rules and enforcement are broken.
They're broken.
Ori Berliner, the 25-year NPR veteran, has resigned.
Berliner was suspended on Friday for publicly criticizing liberal bias at the government-funded organization.
Daily Wire Culture reporter Megan Basham has the latest.
In a post on X, Berliner posted his resignation letter and said,
I cannot work in a newsroom where I am disparaged by a new CEO
whose divisive views confirm the very problems at NPR I cited in my free press essay.
Now, that post refers to Catherine Marr, the new chief executive at the organization who took over last month,
and posts she made on social media showing her far-left views.
Berliner's suspension and resignation come after he wrote a piece in the free press,
criticizing various coverage decisions made by NPR.
He also wrote about the large disparity between Republicans and Democrats in the newsroom,
saying that staffers were out to damage the presidency of Donald Trump.
Upon being suspended, Berliner was told he'd be fired if he violated NPR's policy
about working with outside news organizations going forward, so he resigned.
