I'm Daily Wire editor-in-chief John Bickley with Georgia Howl. It's Thursday, October 10th, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update. Hurricane Milton made landfall last night near Siesta Key, Florida, as a category three storm, with winds of 120 miles per hour.
Starting point is 00:00:31 Daily Wire Senior Editor Cabot Phillips has the latest. Over 3 million people remain in the dark today as crews work to restore power and the storm now downgraded to a category 1 moves off the coast. Florida is dealing with severe flooding following 10 inches of rain reported and up to 12 inches more expected. St. Lucie County has seen 17 tornadoes and several fatalities, according to Sheriff Keith Pearson, with rescue efforts ongoing and hundreds of homes destroyed. In Tampa, over 100 residents were rescued from an assisted living facility as emergency crews navigated waste-deep water. Governor Rondisantis noted that the state has not officially confirmed any fatalities yet, but acknowledged the situation remains fluid. My sense would be we're probably in the hundreds of rescues statewide so far. I think you're going to see, because we had more inland flooding, you're going to see some floods happen in the ensuing days.
Starting point is 00:01:25 and you may have to have some people go in and do some rescues there. So I think you may see it be ongoing. As Floridians assess the damage recovery efforts remain ongoing in areas that were hit hard by Hurricane Helene just two weeks ago. Daily Wire reporter Tim Pierce was on the ground in some of those areas and joins us now. Large parts of the areas impacted by Helene are still without power or water. In downtown Asheville, dozens of businesses have been closed since the hurricane. Those few that are open are often not much more than a place to get a free cup of coffee and a snack. Morningwire spoke to one resident, Sheila Surrett, who compared the downtown area as it is now to the COVID pandemic.
Starting point is 00:02:05 It's a little bit more busier than when we have to survive COVID. COVID it didn't have this much traffic, people running in and out like they did. But it's pretty much like a dead ghost town sort of. On the northern edge of the damage, the community around Rhone Mountain, Tennessee, has largely fended for itself. The First Baptist Church of Roan Mountain is one of the few spots where people can go to get a hot meal, medical attention, and supplies. Morningwire spoke to Kathy Vorse, who is staying at the church with her family after the flooding took out their rental home. It's been difficult only because I feel guilty. I feel guilty that we're taking up space for someone else who might need it more.
Starting point is 00:02:42 And I worry about the cats. I worry that they're causing a problem. But they have been so reassuring. They welcomed us with open arms. They prayed with us. They have been saints. Honestly, that everyone here has been absolutely amazing. The Afghan National accused of plotting an election day terror attack allegedly worked for the CIA. As sources tell NBC News, 27-year-old Nasir Ahmad Tahiti previously worked as a security guard for the agency in Afghanistan,
Starting point is 00:03:10 though he was not an informant. Tahiti, who was arrested in Oklahoma this week, entered the U.S. in September of 2021, shortly after the Taliban's takeover. authorities allege he shared ISIS-related contacts with a co-conspirator and donated to an ISIS-linked charity. Former acting ICE director Tom Homan told Fox News, we don't know how many migrants just like him have crossed into the U.S. illegally. Luckily, this guy was called on some chatter, but we both know the intelligence community isn't perfect. They'll miss more than they get. So God help us, there is more than just this one in the country because of this administration. This episode is brought to you by Daily Wire's election

The Labor Department reports that the consumer price index increased by 0.2% from August and 2.4% year over year. That's slightly above forecasts. Prices for essentials like food and rent remain high, putting pressure on American households. The Federal Reserve is expected to consider further rate cuts at its November meeting. Despite inflation remaining elevated, Social Security recipients will see a smaller
Starting point is 00:04:39 cost-of-living adjustment to their monthly checks than was given last year. The 2.5% increase amounts to about $50 more per month for retirees, though many seniors worry it won't keep pace with rising costs. Over 72 million people, including retirees and disabled individuals, rely on Social Security as part of their income. The Social Security Administration says the increase is smaller than last years due to easing inflation. Ethel Kennedy, the widow of Robert F. Kennedy and mother of RFK Jr. has died at the age of 96. Her grandson, Joe Kennedy III, announced her passing following complications from a stroke earlier this month. Ethel founded the Robert F. Kennedy the Human Rights Organization after her husband's assassination in 1968.
Starting point is 00:05:26 She's survived by nine children, 34 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren. And Fox News has invited Donald Trump and Kamala Harris to a final debate before Election Day, offering dates in Pennsylvania on October 24th and October 27th. The debate would be moderated by Brett Baer and Martha McCallum. Fox News says this could be a last chance for each candidate to present their closing arguments. Trump has scheduled a rally in New York on October 27th, and neither candidate has confirmed their participation in the proposed debates yet.
