I'm Georgia Howe with Daily Wire Editor-in-Chief John Bickley.
It's Monday, January 16th, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update.
Six people were shot and killed in a central California home.
home on Monday, including a 17-year-old mother and a six-month-old baby in what the sheriff
called a targeted attack. After House Republicans demanded that President Joe Biden release
visitor logs from his home in Wilmington, Delaware, where he often spends his weekend and where
numerous classified documents were found, the president's attorneys admitted that those records
do not exist. Critics say that the lack of transparency from the White House is glaring, given the
amount of time Biden spends there, as well as the sensitive documents discovered. Congress could release
the more than 14,000 hours worth of Capitol Police security tapes relating to the January 6th riot
as soon as next week, an apparent promise made by Speaker Kevin McCarthy to the 20 holdouts
in exchange for their support. The speaker detailed how that might be done on Sunday.
The best way to handle this, I think, is exactly the way Elon Musk, just put all the information
out there and let people see what is truth and what is not. So the best way to do that is you
release the tapes, people can know for themselves instead of picking and choosing
what views they want people to see.
Federal authorities are investigating how two commercial planes nearly collided on the runway at New York's JFK Airport over the weekend.
One plane was barreling down the runway for takeoff as another flight crossed its path,
forcing air traffic controllers to order the departing plane to come to an abrupt halt.
Here's one passenger recounting the horrifying experience.
It was like a split second of panic that resulted in this audible reaction on the plane.
I felt then adrenaline and there was total quiet on the plane,
and then there was relief when the plane came to a stop.
The death toll rose to 40 and 30 people are still missing Monday
after an apartment building in Ukraine was hit by a Russian missile.
This is the deadliest attack in the war in months.
The city of San Francisco should pay each longtime black resident $5 million in reparations.
That's according to a San Francisco Reparations Committee draft document.
To be eligible for the program, the applicant would have
have to be 18 years old and have identified as black or African American on public documents
for at least 10 years while also providing two more qualifying factors, such as being
born in San Francisco between 1940 and 1996, and have proof of residency in San Francisco for
at least 13 years. An applicant could also list being personally or the direct descendant of someone
incarcerated by the failed war on drugs.
Italian authorities announced Monday that Matteo Messina De Naro, a mafia boss nicknamed the devil,
and considered to be the most wanted man in Italy, was finally arrested at a hospital and taken to a secret location.
Messina De Naro has been accused of dozens of murders, including the strangulation of a pregnant woman.
Romanian law enforcement officials have reportedly seized millions of dollars worth of assets from a Bucharest compound belonging to former kickboxer and social media influencer Andrew Tate,
amid their sex trafficking investigation into him.
Romania's National Agency for the Administration of Seized Assets
said it seized more than a dozen high-end vehicles,
including a Rolls-Royce, a Ferrari, and a Mercedes-Benz.
Tate was detained along with his brother Tristan Tate and two other individuals
in an investigation into allegations of organized crime, human trafficking, and rape.
A $10 million statue honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife, Coretta Scott King,
was unveiled in Boston this weekend,
but the installment quickly generated controversy online
due to its obscure nature.
Kareta Scott's own cousin ridiculed the memorial,
saying it looked lewd from some angles.
The statue is supposed to show the civil rights couple
hugging each other in a famous photo known as The Embrace.
Lawmakers, business leaders, and academics
participating in the World Economic Forum
are descending upon the small ski town of Davos, Switzerland,
this week,
to discuss a variety of policy proposals that entail greater coordination between government and
corporate actors, known as stakeholder capitalism.
The group's annual conference, led by Klaus Schwab, has drawn the attention of conservatives
who contend that many of the policies floated each year infringe upon individual liberties.
