I'm Georgia Howe with Daily Wire Editor-in-Chief John Bickley.
It's Friday, August 23rd, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update.
Presidential candidate Robert Kennedy Jr. has suspended his presidential campaign.
In his announcement, he blamed Democrats for disenfranchising his millions of voters.
He said the Democratic Party he grew up with would not be recognizable to his father and uncles.
As you know, I left that party in October because it had departed so dramatically from the
core values that I grew up with. It had become the party of war, censorship, corruption,
big pharma, big tech, big ag, and big money. The DNC and its media organs engineered a surge
of popularity for Vice President Harris based upon nothing. No policies, no interviews, no debates,
only smoke and mirrors.
and balloons in a highly-produced Chicago circus.
There, in Chicago, history of Democratic speakers
mentioned Donald Trump 147 times just on the first day.
Who needs a policy when you have Trump to hate?
These are the principal causes that persuaded me
to leave the Democratic Party and run as an independent.
And now, to throw my support
of President Trump.
The causes were
free speech,
a war in Ukraine,
and the war on our children.
Trump will hold a rally in Arizona this evening.
Fed Chairman Jerome Powell signaled that a rate cut is coming soon.
Powell was speaking at the annual Jackson Hole Economic Summit.
His remarks, boosted Wall Street's hopes
and the Dow jumped 400 points.
The Fed is expected to lower rates
as soon as its next meeting in September.
Powell pointed to weaknesses
in the labor market for his decision.
Just this week, the Biden-Harris administration
revised the job numbers down by more than 800,000.
The time has come for policy to adjust.
The direction of travel is clear,
and the timing and pace of rate cuts
will depend on incoming data, the evolving outlook,
and the balance of risks.
We will do everything we can to support a strong labor market
as we make further progress toward price stability.
With an appropriate dialing back of policy
restraint, there is good reason to think,
that the economy will get back to 2% inflation while maintaining a strong labor market.
Rumors that Beyonce or Taylor Swift would perform at the Democratic National Convention turned out to be unfounded.
Daily Wire reporter Amanda Prestigacamow has the details.
Organizers of the event hinted that a surprise VIP guest would be taking the stage on the final night in Chicago.
White House political director Emily Ruiz posted a honeybee emoji on her social media on Thursday, which caused an online frenzy.
Beyonce fans call themselves the beehive.
Additionally, TMZ reported that they had confirmed Beyonce's performance.
However, a spokesperson for Beyonce told the Hollywood reporter that the singer was never scheduled to appear.
So in the end, it was Kamala Harris, who was the DNC's special guest.
Former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswami was mobbed by anti-Israel protesters outside of the DNC in Chicago.
Daily Wire reporter Cassie Akiva suggested Ramaswami join her at the protest,
where he was directly confronted.
We don't want you here.
You're not welcome here.
Well, the good news is we're America,
and so we actually get to all express ourselves.
Really?
You get to express being a racist.
You get to express being a racist, Zionist pig.
Is that what you get to express?
I'm from America.
You want to express that?
Racist go, ho.
Racist go, ho!
Racist go, ho!
After the chaos, Akiva spoke to Ramoswamy
exclusively about being chased down by pro-Palestinians.
Right now you're outside the DNC,
but you just came from somewhere else.
Tell us what happened.
Yes, so that was outside of the protests outside the DNC.
It was pretty wild.
But I wanted to, first of all, show up
because I believe in practicing what I preach.
I believe in free speech.
Whether or not you agree with me,
whether or not you like me,
you have the right to speak your mind
as long as it's peaceful.
One of my favorite exchanges was,
first of all, buying with US dollars,
although they accept Venmo as well,
some of this communist literature from this guy.
Why do you think that there were protesters
outside of the DNC, but not the RNC?
That's a good question.
think that the left in part is based on chaos.
And I don't mean that in a negative way.
I think conservatives tend to order their universe based on order,
and liberals and the far left tends to order their view on disorder.
Now, at one point, there is a guy who stopped you,
and you tried to have a real conversation with him,
and then they started calling you racist.
Can you talk about that?
Right, right.
It was interesting.
The racist charge was just,
it just wasn't the right insult for him to level.
I think he could have done better than that.
I do care about people,
the well-being and plight of people everywhere in the world,
including in Gaza.
But we can't have this conversation.
ignoring the reality of the event that precipitated it, which was, of course, an attack on Israel's
sovereignty and its own people. And so I was hoping that would actually at least open up interesting
dialogue. There are nuanced issues around this whole question, and we ought to be able to have
that conversation. Then I started getting called racist. The Supreme Court gave the Republican National
Committee a partial election integrity win. The court granted a request from the RNC to make
Arizona require proof of citizenship when registering to vote. The justices ruled to allow one of three
provisions of the state's election integrity law to be enforced. Officials say more than 40,000
people have registered to vote in federal elections in Arizona without providing proof of citizenship.
Joe Biden beat Donald Trump in the state by just over 10,000 votes in 2020.
RNC chair Michael Watley celebrated the ruling, saying, quote, while Democrats have worked to undermine
basic election safeguards and make it easier for non-citizens to vote, we have fought
tooth and nail to preserve citizenship requirements, see the law enforced, and secure our elections.
A yacht sank off the coast of Sicily, early Monday morning, leaving six dead and one still missing.
Daily Wire reporter Tim Pierce has the details.
A water sprout, which is a kind of tornado, swept through Sicily's northern coast on Monday,
and it capsized and sunk the luxury vessel.
The yacht was anchored near Porticello and broke apart in the storm, leaving debris scattered
along the coast. Survivors clung to life rafts until rescued by boats nearby. Eight people were
hospitalized, including a child whose mother described holding her infant daughter above her head to keep the
child from drowning. Of the 22 people on board when the tragedy took place, 15 escaped and six are
confirmed dead. One person is still missing while rescue teams continue to search. The USS Abraham Lincoln
was deployed to the Middle East this week to bolster the U.S. military presence in the region as
tensions there continue to rise. Daily Wire reporter Tim Rice explains why. The USS Abraham Lincoln
arrived in the Middle East on Wednesday, joined by guided missile destroyers. The carrier, equipped with
F-35 fighter jets, bolsters U.S. naval presence in the region alongside the USS Theodore Roosevelt,
which arrived in July. A guided missile submarine, the USS Georgia, has also been ordered to the region.
These deployments come amid heightened tensions as Hezbollah and Iran threaten retaliation against Israel.
The Pentagon is preparing to support Israel and to address potential escalation in the region.
