May 22nd, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update. Several European nations said today that
they will recognize a Palestinian state on May 28th and hoped other countries would follow suit.
Daily Wire reporter Tim Pierce has more. Ireland, Spain, and North. Ireland, Spain, and North
Norway claim the decision is aimed at speeding up effort to secure a ceasefire in Israel's war with Hamas.
Here's Simon Harris, Ireland's prime minister.
In the lead up to today's announcement, I've spoken with a number of other leaders and
counterparts, and I'm confident that further countries will join us in taking this important
step in the coming weeks.
The news was welcomed by the Palestinian Authority and Hamas, which prior to October, were the
two main governing bodies for Palestinians.
But Israeli officials say the actions amount to rewarding Hamas terrorists for the October 7th attack that sparked the current war in Gaza.
In response, Israel ordered the immediate return of its ambassadors in Ireland, Spain, and Norway,
just the latest sign of strained relations between the Jewish state and Europe.
Around 144 of the 193 member states of the United Nations recognize a Palestinian state,
but only a handful of the 27 EU members have done so formally, mostly former communist countries.
Russia reportedly launched a counter space weapon into orbit last week.
According to Pentagon spokesman Major General Pat Ryder,
the satellite Russia launched as capable of attacking other low-orbit satellites.
It was deployed into the same orbit as a U.S. government satellite,
something Ryder says the U.S. will continue to monitor.
Certainly, we would say that we have a responsibility to be ready to protect and defend the space domain
and ensure continuous and uninterrupted support to the joint and combined force.
And we'll continue to balance the need to protect our interests in space
with our desire to preserve a stable and sustainable space environment.
When asked if the Russian counter space weapon posed a threat to the U.S. satellite,
Ryder responded.
Well, it's a counter space weapon in the same orbit as a U.S. government satellite.
The potential sale of an American ammunition producer to a foreign company
has grabbed the attention of several lawmakers. Daily Wire senior editor Joel Needler reports.
Vista Outdoor announced in October that it's agreed to sell its firearm business, which includes
ammunition brands like Remington, to the Czechoslovak Group or CSG. The Czech arms company has been a major
supporter and supplier of munitions to Ukraine. Opponents of the near $2 billion deal cite concern
over transferring ownership to a foreign company amid a global arms shortage due to the continuing wars
in Ukraine and Gaza. Senator J.D.
Vance called on the Treasury Department to block the sale, alleging that CSG has ties to China and Russia.
If the Treasury Department decides to block the sale of Vista through the Committee on Foreign Investment
in the U.S., it would effectively end CSG's bid.
Meanwhile, Vista is entertaining a rival bid from a Texas investment group.
The Biden administration is canceling an additional $7.7 billion in student loans.
The White House announced Biden's save plan earlier today, which will forgive debt for $1,000,
60,000 Americans, the president is looking to cancel debt for 25 million more in the fall.
Biden's debt cancellation frenzy has not come without scrutiny, however.
The Supreme Court blocked a version of the Save Plan last year and 18 states are currently
suing the administration, saying the president needs to go through Congress first.
Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey told Fox News that the latest move comes off as a desperate
attempt to win over voters.
We took him to task once.
we'll do it again. It's illegal. It's unconstitutional. I'm not going to let Joe Biden saddle
working Missouri families with Ivy League debt. The committee for a responsible federal budget
estimates the cost of Biden's total debt relief plan will be $870 billion to $1.4 trillion.
