Starting point is 00:00:00 I'm Georgia Howe with Daily Wire Editor-in-Chief John Bickley. It's Wednesday, September 11th, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update. In New York City, former President Trump and Vice President Harris set aside politics today to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the 9-11 attacks. Both candidates were seen at Ground Zero alongside President Biden and Senator J.D. Vance, paying tribute to the nearly 3,000 victims lost that day. Daily Wire reporter Amanda Presta Jacamo has more. Trump and Harris, fresh off of their first presidential debate, shook hands ahead of the ceremony.
Starting point is 00:00:59 Later, Biden and Harris attended a wreath-laying ceremony in Shanksville, Pennsylvania for a Flight 93 Memorial, and they also attended a tribute later that day at the Pentagon. Over 400 first responders gave their lives on September 11, 2001. The 40 passengers and crew members of Flight 93, all of whom lost their lives, are believed to have prevented a larger terrorist attack by fighting back against the hijackers. The Shanksville crash site is just a 20-minute flight from the U.S. Capitol. House Speaker Mike Johnson is delaying a crucial House vote on a plan to prevent a partial government shutdown. The legislation is a continuing resolution combined with the SAVE Act, which requires proof of citizenship to vote. The bill faced more resistance than expected
Starting point is 00:01:45 from Republicans. Some opposed the funding bill on principle, while others raised concern about the impact on defense funding. Johnson indicated today that the vote may be rescheduled for next week. We're going to continue to work on this. The whip is going to do the hard work and build consensus. We're going to work through the weekend on that. And I want any member of Congress in either party to explain the American people why we should not ensure that only U.S. citizens are voting in U.S. elections. Several GOP senators held a press conference today to show support for the SAVE Act. Morning Wires spoke to Kansas Senator Roger Marshall, co-sponsor of the SAVE Act about why it's important. There's nothing more vital to the survival and success of our democracy than election integrity.
Starting point is 00:02:30 And the SAFE Act helps address that in so many ways, that it forces people to give their proof of citizenship when they go register to vote. And if you're getting a ballot by mail, you have to also use some type of ID proof as well. But obviously my friends across the aisle don't think that this is a problem. They refuse to help us out here. And I think that that's why Americans are asking why, well, how come? I keep saying that the Democrats are the real threat to democracy, that election integrity is so important and we continue to see it abused. Congressional leaders need to come to an agreement by September 30th to avoid a government shutdown.
Starting point is 00:03:11 ABC News is facing backlash from across the political spectrum after last night's presidential debates. Daily Wire Deputy Managing editor Tim Rice is here to break down the fallout from last night. Critics including former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer and journalist Glenn Greenwald slammed the network for its obvious bias. Moderators David Muir and Lindsay Davis faced accusations of grilling Trump with aggressive fact checks while allowing Harris to squeak by with little to no scrutiny. Harris campaign chair Jenna Malley Dillon stated that the American people deserve to see more
Starting point is 00:03:42 of the candidates contrasting visions for the future, pushing for another debate in October. Trump had the following response in a post-debate interview with Sean Hannity. If you won the debate, I sort of think maybe I shouldn't do it. Why should I do another debate? She immediately said, we want another debate. That's, you know what happens when you're a prize fighter and you lose? You immediately won a new fight. You want a rematch. You want a rematch. Would you be inclined to say yes? Maybe if it was on a fair network, I would do that. A new post-debate poll conducted by CNN shows Trump gained voter trust in regard to his economic policy. Before the debate, Trump held a 16-point lead over Harris, with 53% of voters trusting him more on the economy compared to 37% for Harris.
Starting point is 00:04:26 After the debate, his lead widened to 20%, with 55% trusting him on economic matters. Police in Kentucky are intensifying their search for a Kentucky man accused of shooting five, motorists on Interstate 75. Neighbors nearby claim that 32-year-old Joseph Couch threatened them with firearms before the interstate shooting. Despite prior warnings, Couch's charges were dismissed earlier this year. Police say they've expanded their manhunt and are offering $35,000 for any information leading to Couch's capture, though they also hope he gives himself up. I hope he doesn't have water. I hope he doesn't have food. And I hope he's just, he's wore out, and eventually he'll walk out of them woods.
Starting point is 00:05:08 And legendary actor James Earl Jones has passed away at the age of 83. He was known for his powerful performances and bringing to life some of the most memorable characters in cinema through his voice alone. His career spanned several decades, earning him accolades across film, television, and theater. The court theater in New York was renamed in his honor in 2022, helping submit his legacy as one of the most influential actors of our time. Those are your drive home updates this afternoon.
