Starting point is 00:00:02 I'm Georgia Howe with Daily Wire Editor-in-Chief John Bickley. It's Friday, August 25th, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update. The first ever mugshot of a former U.S. President Donald Trump's instantly iconic photo from Fulton County Jail has predictably gone viral. It's been repeatedly displayed by media outlets and touted by the former president himself on the platform X. It's the Mona Lisa. It's incredible. And nobody will ever have a mugshot like. this. In his first tweet in the more than two years since he was banned from Twitter, Trump posted a tweet of his glaring mug shot along with the web address for his fundraising page. The tweet was viewed over a million times within just a matter of hours and merchandise featuring it was also up for

Trump also turned heads by describing himself in the booking documents as being six foot three and two hundred and fifteen pounds, a good bit lighter than the White House doctor reported back in 2018. Also going viral are Trump's comments on the day he turned himself in. When you have that great freedom to challenge you have to be able to otherwise you're going to have very dishonest elections. What has taken place here is a travesty of justice. We did nothing wrong. I did nothing wrong. And everybody knows it. I've never had such support. Stay tuned for our in-depth analysis.
Starting point is 00:01:32 of the Fulton County case this weekend. Several more stores have been robbed by so-called smash and grab shoplifters in Los Angeles. Just days after L.A. Mayor Karen Bass announced a task force to target the retail theft rings. At least three stores were robbed this week, including a foot locker store in Arcadia. Morning Wire spoke to Deputy District Attorney John McKinney, who is hopeful that the task force will eventually have an impact, but only if it includes strict punishments. We're not going to really see an impact on this behavior until the people who are doing it see some real teeth in a criminal justice system. In order for them to be deterred, it's going to take more than a flashy press conference.
Starting point is 00:02:15 They're going to hear and see people going to jail and even prison before calculus of whether to get involved in this behavior changes. Sandwich chain Subway confirmed Thursday that it will be sold. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal earlier this week, the Atlanta-based Rorke Capital was offering around $9.6 billion for Subway, which is privately owned. Subway said its leadership team will remain in place. Rourke is also the parent company to several other popular food chains, including Arby's, Duncan, Jimmy Johns, and Buffalo Wild Wings.
Starting point is 00:02:52 Democratic Governor Roy Cooper of North Carolina announced this week that he would be a sweeping GOP-supported election bill, which could cause another override showdown. The bill in question would end a grace period for mail-in voting. In a video message, the governor accused Republicans of using their majority to assault the people's right to vote. Unfortunately, these schemes aren't new in North Carolina, and we've stopped many of them before. Only this time, Republicans are armed with a one-vote legislative supermajority.
Starting point is 00:03:25 Cooper, who cannot run for re-election in 2024 due to term limits, successfully blocked several components of the bill during past sessions. Wireless carrier T-Mobile says it plans to cut around 5,000 jobs or about 7% of its workforce. In an email to employees Thursday, the company's CEO said the layoffs would happen over the next five weeks and impact a variety of different employees throughout the U.S. The laid-off employees will receive severance packages based on tenure. The announcement comes just months after the company's CEO said the telecom sector was, quote, vibrant and healthy. You know, we've always been the value leader that's important in a time of, you know, questionable economy.
Starting point is 00:04:06 But at the same time now, for the first time in our history, we're the network leader. The layoffs at the wireless company follow a string of mass job cuts throughout the tech sector, including Google and Amazon. Layoffs have also reached outside of tech hitting Disney parks, newspapers, and some universities. A three-day summit of the BRICS countries of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa ended with a significant expansion. The nations of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have been added to the group in Iran, Argentina, Egypt, and Ethiopia are scheduled to be added next year. The summit included plans to move away from the U.S. dollar for trade deals. Vladimir Putin issued a statement saying that the de-dollarization movement is already gaining momentum with the BRICS countries. The Biden administration director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism

Dr. George Coop told Daily Mail online that he hasn't changed the guidelines yet, but is considering following Canada's lead, which changed their alcohol consumption recommendations earlier this year. Coop says a new study shows significant health benefits of reducing alcohol intake. Current recommendations are just one drink per day for women and women. too for men. Tears and happy Friday.
