It's Monday, December 2nd, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update. One day after President Biden signed a wide-ranging pardon for his son Hunter, Donald Trump is hinting at mass pardons for January 6 defendants.
Starting point is 00:00:32 Daily Wire's senior editor, Cabot Phillips, has the story. In a post on Truth Social, Trump called Biden's 10-year pardon a, quote, miscarriage of justice and criticized the Justice Department for being, quote, Democrat controlled. Trump's team issued a separate statement vowing to reform the Justice Department, calling it weaponized against political opponents. Meanwhile, Hunter Biden's pardon wipes out his convictions on gun and tax evasion charges, as well as any other crimes he may have committed over the last decade. President Biden defended the move as protection against.
Starting point is 00:01:02 what he called selective prosecution. Congressional Republicans quickly condemned the pardon, accusing Biden of corruption and broken promises. Millions of Americans are looking for digital deals today. Deputy managing editor Tim Rice has more on the Cyber Monday mayhem. Shoppers are expected to spend a record $13.2 billion online today, according to Adobe Analytics. Cyber Monday is the biggest online sales day of the year.
Starting point is 00:01:28 Spending is expected to peak Monday night, with consumers spending nearly $16 million per minute during the busiest hours. Major retailers like Amazon, Walmart, and Target have stretched Cyber Monday into a multi-day event, kicking off sales as early as the weekend. Early data show strong holiday spending, even amid higher prices. More shoppers are using Buy Now, Pay Later plans to fund their purchases. The U.S. dollar is strengthening as investors appear to be responding to President Trump's proposed economic policies, along with his plan to impose.
Starting point is 00:02:00 tariffs on imports. He's also rebuked efforts to dethrone the dollar as the global reserve currency by BRICS countries. Many economists believe Trump's policies would raise the value of the U.S. dollar over other currencies. Bullish forecasts about upcoming November jobs, data, and an expected slowing of interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve also appear to have boosted the relative value of the dollar. Doctors in the UK announced last week the first significant medical breakthrough in the treatment of asthma in 50 years. Doctors at King's College London published a study in Lancet respiratory medicine showing promising result for an injection given during some asthma attacks as well as some COPD exacerbations. The new treatment showed better efficacy than the current
Starting point is 00:02:45 standard treatment of steroid tablets and may reduce the need for further treatment by 30%. The injection targets eocinophilic flare-ups, which account for almost 50% of asthma attacks and 30% of COPD exacerbations. About 10 people currently die each day from asthma in the United States. California Governor Gavin Newsom has proposed spending $25 million to quote, Trump-proof his state.
Starting point is 00:03:11 Here with Morris Daily Wire reporter, Amanda Prestozacamo. Newsom has called a special emergency session for the California state legislature, proposing a $25 million legal defense fund for the state's Justice Department to fight Trump. Newsom said in a statement that California will take action if rights and freedoms are targeted. GOP state senator Brian Jones has called the move a political stunt intended to distract from Democrats' significant losses across the state during the 2024 election. Notably, California has been hemorrhaging residents since 2020, losing more than 700,000 people.
Starting point is 00:03:49 Meanwhile, states like Texas and Florida have seen significant growth in their populations. And a Houston Texans linebacker will be suspended after a late hit in Sunday's game against the Jaguars. Crane and Company host David Cohn has the details. Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence left Sunday's game after a late hit by Texans linebacker Aziz Al-Shayir. Lawrence had already begun sliding to take himself out of a play when Al Shaire made late contact to the quarterback's head. This sparked a brawl between both teams and led to multiple ejections and penalties. Al-Shayr has since apologized for the hit, claiming he didn't realize Lawrence was already sliding,
Starting point is 00:04:28 but the NFL is expected to hand down a suspension, although the length of that suspension has yet to be determined. Trevor Lawrence reassured fans that he is recovering at home and feeling better. The question now for the franchise quarterback is, will Jacksonville shut him down for the remainder of the season, now that the team is 2 and 10 and eliminated from the playoffs?
