with guest host Batia Ungar Sargon, opinion editor at Newsweek. It's Monday, May 6th, and this is
your Morning Wire afternoon update. The judge in Trump's hush money trial says that jail time
is on the table should the former president continue to violate his gag order. Daily Wire
your editor, Cabot Phillips, has the latest.
Judge Juan Mershan also fined Trump another $1,000, but conceded that it's, quote,
clear the relatively small fines are not effective, and then going forward the court will consider
a, quote, jail sentence.
Judge Mershahn imposed the gag order on Trump before the trial started, saying he could
not make any public statements about witnesses, counsel, court staff, or family members
of those involved in the case.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, along with prosecutors, have alleged over a dozen
gag order violations, which to this point have resulted in $9,000 in fines.
For their part, Trump and his attorneys have argued that the gag order violates his First
Amendment rights, as well as the First Amendment rights of his supporters.
They say it's unfair to limit a former president and presidential nominee in this way.
Columbia University's canceling plans to hold its main graduation ceremony later this month.
This comes after nearly a month of anti-Israel protests disrupting life on the New York campus
and other schools across the country.
Daily Wire Culture Reporter, Megan Basham, has more.
Instead of the May 15th event, the university will hold what it calls smaller-scale school-based celebrations.
Columbia's administration says the idea came out of feedback from school staffers and student leaders.
The announcement comes weeks after the NYPD sent officers to clear an academic building on the university's campus that had been seized by protesters.
Following that incident, Colombia's president, Manus Sheffek, asked police
to remain present until at least May 17th
to help, quote, maintain order
and ensure encampments are not reestablished.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams told ABC yesterday,
he hoped the city's universities
would allow their graduation ceremonies to take place.
I don't think we should allow anything to get
in our normal way of life.
We would do our job,
and if the institutions decide to graduate their students
and celebrate a beautiful experience with their families,
we will make sure it's done in a peaceful manner.
The University of Southern California also opted to nix its main commencement ceremony.
Meanwhile, House GOP conference chairwoman Elise Stefanik called Columbia's decision an unbelievable
failure of leadership after they weekly negotiated with the pro-Hamas terrorist encampment.
She says Colombia's leadership has lost control of its school.
Hamas says they have accepted an Egyptian-Katari ceasefire proposal that would stop the war with Israel.
The terrorist group issued a statement Tuesday that its leadership announced the news on a phone call with Egyptian and Qatari officials.
But Israel says the agreement is not one that they have agreed to and is, quote,
far from meeting Israel's requirements.
Israel did say, however, that it will send a delegation to discuss the treaty.
This comes as the Jewish nation has ordered officials in Gaza to begin evacuating civilians from the southern town of Rafa.
The town is believed to be Hamas's last stronghold.
Details of the deal were not immediately released.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the following at the Holocaust Remembrance Day opening ceremony yesterday.
I say to the leaders of the world, no amount of pressure, no decision by any international forum will stop Israel from defending itself.

Officials in Russia have threatened to strike British military facilities and said they plan to hold drills that simulate nuclear weapon use.
This all comes amid rising tension between Moscow and Western nations over their potential to get more involved in Ukraine.
Russia warned Britain's ambassador to the foreign ministry that if UK supplied weapons are used in Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory, that could mean consequences for a British military.
facilities. A church pastor in Pennsylvania says it's a miracle he's alive after a man tried to shoot him
in the middle of his sermon. The incident was caught on camera in a live stream video and showed a
church deacon Clarence McAllister tackling the assailant after the would-be shooter's handgun jammed.
Here's the audio from the shocking moment.
The pastor, Glenn Germany, says that he had never seen the suspect before. Police say the
assailant, a 26-year-old man who was arrested at the church, lived in a home nearby where officers
found a man dead from a gunshot wound. The suspect did confess to the crimes telling a state
trooper at the jail that, quote, God told him to do it. Meanwhile, Pastor Glenn says the
suspect smiled at him before approaching with a gun. He pulled the trigger and a miracle of God
happened that the gun got jammed. That bull that had a name on it. And ABC President Kim
Kim Godwin has announced she's stepping down from her post. In 2021, Godwin became the first black person
to run a broadcast television news division. She resigned soon after corporate restructuring
took away much of her management autonomy. Godwin reportedly struggled to navigate the culture
at the ABC News Division, which the Wall Street Journal described as cutthroat and toxic.
