I'm Daily Wire, editor-in-chief John Bickley. It's Thursday, May 23rd, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update. President Biden announced today that Kenya will be designated a major non-NATO ally deepening the United States relationship with the East African country.
Starting point is 00:00:31 The move underscores a race to develop relations in Africa as Russia and China strengthen their influence over the continent. Biden is hosting Kenyan President William Ruto for a three-day conference and says that a relationship between the two nations will allow them to take on issues from health to debt to technology. Ruto is the first African leader since 2008 to visit the White House, though Kenya has been a long-standing ally of the U.S. America has partnered with Kenya for years on counterterrorism efforts, including a response to Houthi attacks in the Red Sea last December. Ruto also met with House Speaker Mike Johnson and will meet with Vice President Kamala Harris tomorrow night. President Biden is on track to miss Ohio's election registration deadline. Here with Morris Daily Wire's senior editor, Cabot Phillips. Ohio state law requires political parties to certify their candidate 90 days before election day.
Starting point is 00:01:27 This year, that deadline falls on August 7th, but the Democratic Party will not certify Biden until its national convention on August 19th. Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose says he and the state legislature have sent weeks of warnings to the Democratic Party but have not been offered a legal resolution. In his words, quote, I am duty bound to follow the law as Ohio's chief elections officer. For his part, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said the state will make sure Biden gets on the ballot, if not by the legislature, then quote, by the court. The Supreme Court on Thursday shot down a challenge to a South Carolina electoral map, a win for Republicans in the state.
Starting point is 00:02:05 Daily Wire's senior editor Ash Short has details. The Supreme Court ruled 6 to 3 to reverse a lower court's finding of racial bias and uphold South Carolina's redrawn congressional map. Justice Samuel Alito wrote for the majority opinion and said the map's challengers, quote, provided no direct evidence of a racial gerrymander, and their circumstantial evidence is very weak. Republicans in the state argued that the redistricted map, which favors the GOP, was drawn for legal partisan reasons, not illegal racial ones. Alito noted in his opinion that the plaintiff's case relied on deeply flawed expert reports that failed to produce any similarly partisan map with a more balanced racial makeup. In the dissent, Justice Elena Kagan wrote that Alito enabled South
Starting point is 00:02:50 Carolina to continue dividing citizens along racial lines. The House Ways and Means Committee released over 100 pieces of evidence against Hunter Biden, saying the president's son indisputably lied while testifying to Congress. Here with the details is Daily Wire reporter Tim Pierce. The House Ways and Means Committee released emails, phone records, and documents from two IRS whistleblowers related to Hunter Biden's business abroad. The evidence suggests Biden gave false testimony to Congress at least three times on February, February 28th. For example, the president's son testified that a Rosemont-Seneca-Bohai bank account
Starting point is 00:03:25 was not affiliated with him, but one of the documents released yesterday was Biden's contract with the bank. Committee Chairman Jason Smith said it's clear that Biden lied to Congress, adding lying during sworn testimony is a felony offense, and the American people expect the same accountability for the son of the president of the United States. Measures to join the movement called Greater Idaho have now been passed by a total of 13 Oregon
Starting point is 00:04:13 counties after Crook County joined yesterday. Greater Idaho called on Oregon's governor, Speaker of the House and Senate President to meet with organization leaders and discuss legitimizing the county's secession. Greater Idaho's executive director Matt McCall said, quote, the voters of eastern Oregon have spoken loudly and clearly about their desire to see border talks move forward. The proposed move would shift Oregon's border with Idaho 200 miles, cutting the state in half, but only shifting 10% of its population. Because of the Portland metro area being so populated and so different than the rest of the state, what we get is state-level government that gets decided by the Portland metro area that then gets kind of forced onto the rest
Starting point is 00:04:57 of the state and it causes a lot of friction. The Idaho House of Representatives invited the Oregon legislature to begin talks last year. Families of 19 of the Uvaldi school shooting victims are suing almost 100 state police officers. The suit was filed as the families also agreed to a $2 million settlement with Uvaldi where city officials promised to improve local police standards and training. Daily Wire Investigations editor, Brent Schur, has more. The lawsuit seeks $500 million in damages and comes in the wake of a 600-page Justice Department report released in January, which described the, quote, cascading failures of the law enforcement response to the shooting. 370 federal state and local officers arrived at Robb Elementary School,
Starting point is 00:05:45 but waited over 70 minutes before attempting to confront the shooter. The lawsuit says state troopers did not follow their active shooter training, even as students and teachers followed their lockdown procedures. In terms of the accountability, no discipline of any police officers, no demotions, no nothing. The suit names 91 individual officers, as well as Motorola and Schneider Electric. Motorola made the law enforcement radios that were unreliable during the shooting, and Schneider Electric allegedly made the school's door locks. On Wednesday, the company announced a 10-for-one stock split and raised its dividend.
