I'm Daily Wire, editor-in-chief John Bickley with Georgia Howe. It's Tuesday, August 29th, and this is your morning wire afternoon update.
Adalia has been upgraded to a hurricane as it barrels toward Florida's Gulf Coast. The National Weather Service in Tallahassee has dubbed the system an unprecedented event since no major hurricane on record has ever passed through the bay bordering on the Big Bend region.
The storm is projected to make landfall tomorrow as a Category 3 system with winds hitting upwards of 100,000.
20 miles per hour. Officials on the island of Cedar Key have ordered residents to evacuate as the
storm surge could bring water up to 15 feet. Here's Cedar Key Commissioner Sue Coulson.
It's really important we leave. We don't control the power. The power will go out when it goes out.
The water will go off probably tonight, which will also impact the sewage treatment. So this is going
to be a problem for people who can't live without water or sewage. But look at our city. It's very old.
It's historic, and we're hoping that those people back then knew what to do, and these buildings
will maintain one more time.
The FBI is reportedly searching for more than a dozen Uzbek illegal immigrants who are believed
to have been smuggled into the U.S. by an ISIS-linked individual.
Here with more as Daily Wire reporter Tim Pierce.
On Tuesday, CNN reported that earlier this year, Uzbekistan National seeking asylum were
reportedly screened for any red flags.
It wasn't until after their release that the FBI.
FBI discovered an Uzbekistan smuggling ring operating in cooperation with a Turkish smuggler who
reportedly is connected to ISIS. After the discovery, top national security and administration officials
held emergency meetings. National Security Council spokesman Adrian Watson told CNN that there is no
indication that the individuals are terrorists. However, other government sources told CNN that the more
than 15 migrants are still under criminal scrutiny. Meanwhile, in Ohio, a man is accused of crashing his
minivan into a school bus in Clark County last week, causing the bus to flip and resulting in
dozens of injuries and the death of an 11-year-old boy. Witnesses told WLWT News 5 that the crash was
traumatizing. Just being a mom, it hurt my heart and I seen something that will probably never
ever leave my mind. 35-year-old Hermannio Joseph, a Haitian native who was in the country
illegally has officially been charged with aggravated vehicular manslaughter.
Joseph entered the U.S. in 2022 and was released by the Biden administration with a notice
to appear at an immigration hearing.
He's currently in Clark County Jail on $100,000 bond.
ICE has placed a detainer on him.
Miami Mayor Francis Suarez is suspending his bid for the presidency and dropping out of the
2024 race.
The announcement came today nearly one week after the first GOP primary debate, which Suarez
failed to qualify for. The two-term mayor tweeted the following. While I have decided to suspend
my campaign for president, my commitment to making this a better nation for every American remains.
The real Slim Shady has stood up and is demanding that GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswami
stop using his music. Rapper Eminem and music licenser BMI sent a cease and desist letter to
Ramoswami's campaign demanding the campaign stop using the rapper's song, Lose Yourself. Earlier
this month, the entrepreneur turned presidential candidate wrapped the song at an Iowa State Fair.
Here's a bit of that.
That was a song.
On August 23rd, a BMI rep told Ramoswami's lawyer that Eminem objected to the campaign's use
of M&M's musical compositions and that he wanted his songs removed from the agreement.
The Ramoswamy campaign issued the following response.
Quote, to the American people's chagrin, we will have to leave the rapping to the real slim shady.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise announced on Tuesday that he is being treated for a type of blood cancer called multiple myeloma, which the congressman says is treatable.
Daily Wire reporter Zach Jule has the latest.
The top Republican lawmaker said in a post on X that he had been diagnosed with the disease after getting blood work done because he was not feeling like himself for a few days.
The cancer is highly treatable and he expects to work over the next few months as he undergoes treatment.
The 57-year-old Louisiana congressman was first elected to the House in 2008
after serving in the Louisiana state legislature for more than a decade.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a civil rights lawsuit against a school district on Monday
to halt its recently adopted policy that requires schools to inform parents about student gender transitions.
Daily Wire reporter Brandon Drey has more.
A.G. Bonta announced earlier this month he launched an investigation into the Chino Valley
Unified School District, which represents over 26,000 students in San Bernardino County.
The district's policy requires teachers to inform parents within three days if their child
uses names and pronouns different from their birth certificate, or if the child requests to
use school facilities or join a sports team opposite of their gender. Bonta argued the district's
quote, forced outing policy discriminates against the privacy rights of LGBTQ plus students
and the California Constitution. However, Sonia Shaw, president of the Chino Valley
Unified Board of Education disagrees. Shaw said that Bonta's actions displayed, quote,
government overreach and aggressive action against parents.
And do you hate paper straws like I do? Good news, you might have a medical and environmental
excuse to never use them again. A new study out of Belgium published in the journal,
Food Additives and Contaminates suggests that forever chemicals or PFAs were found in the majority
of both paper and bamboo straws tested. Such chemicals may have,
the potential to cause cancer and other ailments and also negatively affect the environment.
Per the paper, 18 different PFAs were detected in total, and the most common one was banned globally
in 2020. According to the study, plastic straws are actually better for you and the planet.
